Resolved Question: Graphic of a black bug intermittently crawls around TV, even when changing video inputs, WHY?

My children noticed it first, while watching 'Monsters, Inc' via Netflix streaming to the Wii. Then it was on the screen on the episode selection screen. I actually walked all the way up to the Sony KP-51WS510 before I realized it was an image crawling around on the screen. I thought it was some kind of viral marketing campaign Netflix was taking part of. Then we saw it while watching 'Monsters vs. Aliens' on Fios on demand. Now I have no idea what is going on. It is about a third of an inch on the screen. It is black, with about 6 legs and antenna. It bends its upper torso to lead in the direction it turns. Sometimes it just crawls around the edges. Sometimes it takes a tour across the screen. Sometimes it just focuses on a corner. It seems to show up in several grouped periods of 60 to 90 seconds, often making a dozen appearances during a movie. A little annoying at first, now much more of a curiosity, and truly an enigma. Does my rather dated television have virus? Is this a Sony easter egg, designed to be released after years of use? Did some fiendishly brilliant programmer somehow hack my tv? Before you ask; Yes I am sure it is not a real insect, it is a black image on the screen. It is also definitely not a live insect somehow caught behind the glass; this is what google keeps returning to me. Changing video inputs has no effect on it, it will be in the same place on the next input or tv channel. Pausing the video has no effect, the little guy keeps on going. Any clue? anyone? more

Voting Question: Need advice for solid Guerilla Marketing tactics for Website?

I just launched a website that's part blog part newsletter. It has the personal/anecdotal feel of a blog, but is really meant to be a online newsletter/magazine full of recipes, recommendations, and personal essays for women ages 21-30. Since it's not really a blog and isn't a business website, are there any inexpensive, guerrilla marketing tactics anyone can recommend? (I'm hooked into the usual suspects: twitter, facebook, viral campaign through friends) Oh and it's www.citizette.com if you want to check it out. Thanks for your help! more

Voting Question: Is there a way I can contact the people who made MNU Spreads Lies?

Almost a year ago I started role playing as one of the aliens in it's facebook group and it kinda grew to an entire RP with multiple stories. This includes the unofficial name "Poleepkwa" for the aliens that everyone think is the real name but really it's a crop off from the name used in the short movie that District 9 is based on. So, I was wondering if I could ask the creators and see if they are ok with it, or if they are planning to let it stay for another 3 years. I have reason to believe that they are going to shut it down because you can no longer post on its facebook wall anymore for the past 3 weeks (around that time frame). That is where we post our-MNU Spreads Lies RP-blogs and fanfiction as well as updates to the timeline. The entire viral marketing campaign is from Sony, so maybe that helps. http://www.facebook.com/MNUSpreadsLies http://www.mnuspreadslies.com/Preferably Nancy Kim's email. http://gawker.com/5254949/sony-moviemakers-banned-from-myspace#comments more

Resolved Question: What is the most efficient way to market an online subscription-based site?

My partner and I have a new subscription-based site we're going to be launching shortly and are researching the best ways to reach out to the online communities at the onset. We understand it's a bit of a process to market but also understand the impact a solid "viral" campaign can have. Any thoughts on the best way to attempt to launch such a campaign? more

Resolved Question: WTF is Magibon all about?!!?!?!?

I just don't get it! There must be some purpose to her...creepy..."i know something you don't know" staring videos on YouTube. I've Googled her but all I've found is other people just as confused as I am... Apparently it was all some sort of viral marketing campaign for an upcoming japanese horror movie in 2009...but I can't find any further info into this subject? Is there any purpose to her videos? HER EXISTANCE?! Ok, that part was a joke. But seriously, can someone shed some light on this subject, please? Because I seem to be in the dark. o.OAnd what's with her age? Supposedly she's 22, but there's rumours about her being...er, 14? more

Resolved Question: How can I spread the word about the abortifacient effects of the Pill? Some kind of viral marketing campaign?

I want to do some kind of DIY public-health campaign to let women know that hormonal contraceptives can (sometimes) cause very early term miscarriages by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine lining. Usually the pill prevents conception, but sometimes it doesn't, and then it works by preventing implantation. It's not that this information is secret-- it's on WebMD and in the Physician's Desk Reference, and even on the insert that comes with the Pill, but so few women actually know about it...I really want to spread the word, even if only for the sake of informed consent. I figure this is something that goes beyond traditional pro-life/pro-choice; I think a lot of women who believe abortion should be legal would still choose a different method of contraception if they knew this fact... I have zero experience in marketing and/or activism, but I'm willing to learn. Any ideas, Hive Mind? more

Voting Question: What kind of marketing returns could I expect?

If I spend $15,000 per month on a marketing firm for PR/media relations and buzz/viral services, what kind of returns could I expect? I am looking for a formula, such as that amount of marketing might equal a given number of visitors to the company's website (or something along those lines). I realize that it could vary greatly depending on each individual situation, but there have to be some rules of thumb, right? It would be a U.S.-based campaign, covering radio, tv, internet and print, all based on a website in the social landscape that offers completely free access to all users. more

Resolved Question: What do the images of frogs, leaves, etc. mean in "Fringe"?

When the TV show "Fringe" cuts to commercial, it first shows an image set against a black background with yellow lights. There's been a frog, a leaf with an equilateral triangle in it, an apple with a fetus for seeds, etc. I thought it was maybe linked to a sort of viral marketing campaign, but I can't find what the actual inspirations are for these images. more

Resolved Question: Obama Campaign paper for University: How is this intro paragraph?

good references? trying to hard to be funny or actually made you chuckle? Do you want to read on? Should this be 2 different paragraphs? Your input is greatly appreciated. Don't let my questions fool you; I promise you will be entertained: September the 28th, 2008: Obama '08 is released, made available to anyone with an iPhone™ or iPod® touch1 ; this application can also be found on Facebook. Tell me, what do all these things have in common? I'll give you a hint, it has to do with age. Well, they can all be found in the pockets of college students across the country. That's right, in case you haven't heard, Facebook now fits in your pocket and it's time to Rock the Vote. Now as the ninja-turtle, single-Mtv generation who grew alongside the internet, we turn to our gadgets for advice. And who is there with open arms promoting a optimistic message of adaptation and variation? Ladies and gentlemen, please silence your cellphones and mute your Myspace and let me introduce to you a good friend of Joe Anyman–or staunch critic, depending on how you look at it–the man who may lead us out of this monetary downturn, whose use of technology would surprise even Bob Dole. Some have called his plans “class warfare” and claimed he refuses to “repudiate those remarks”7. Remember, no matter who wins, this election has already shattered a few glass ceilings. But Barack Obama has by far the freshest, most current version of a Presidential Campaign, and his enthusiasm may prove to be more contagious than any viral marketing; by capturing the youth vote and spreading his roots far and wide across the Great Plains, Obama stands to not just make, but also shape, history.  more

Resolved Question: What does this symbol mean (Newcastle, Australia)?

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/geoff_death/Clipboard01.jpg The above link is to a symbol that has been appearing all throughout Newcastle, Australia over the past week. It has been printed every day in the local newspaper, appears during commercial breaks on tv and has been spray painted on footpaths all over town. There have even been reports of groups of people holding up signs with the symbol on it standing on the side of the road. I'm thinking it is some sort of viral marketing campaign, but it's starting to bug me. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: The Dark Knight. Well deserved hype... but too much?

Right. I am one of the people that were lucky enough to follow the ARG (Or viral marketing campaign) until end. I don't want to sound as if my head was conjoined with my ass, but I don't think alot of people are completely respecting this movie as the few that took part in the ARG. It's as though everyone had one friend that was a supernerd about the movie and told everyone about it. And when the movie actually hit everyone acted as excited as the actual people who actually dug it as much as everyone say they did. There really is no way to ask this without coming off as "IM ORIGINAL GANGSTA. I LOVED THIS MOVIE BEFORE YOU EVEN HEARD ABOUT IT". But as idiotic as that sounds... it is partially true. To summarize this. People are lying about how good they thought this movie was because they mistook it for the "Must see movie of the year"It deserves all the hype it gets. But the problem isn't with the movie. It's with the normal day people that see this movie. And at some point it has gotten surrounded by hype that the average person is afraid to speak against it. The movie could have only been truly great if it was ridden of the hype and stood only on it's two feet. Like Donnie Darko, for instance.(Directed towards the second answer). Not only was that insulting but i just disregarded any form of argument, or opinion that was stated in your answer. Oh, sry. I got lost in your idiocy.Alright. Obviously people are not seeing the fact that I appreciate the movie more than the next person. seeing as though i spent 50 dollars of gas driving to Indiana to go see it 2 days before the initial release.(to the last comment) No. You missed my point. more

Voting Question: Viral Marketing advice?

In 2007 I founded a guidance organisation in my country. we done some work and got great exposure. by this i mean we were interviewed by radio stations and newspapers and were advertised on the front page of many newspapers. now we are launching a campaign to help the youth to build a successful future. included in this campaign we are selling guidepacks. in order for the campaign to be launched we will need to sell the initial 1000 guidepacks. so people/companies will have to sponsor the packs for the youth. sponsors will receive benefits one of them being their company logo in the guidepack telling the receiver that they sponsored it. how can we sell these packs to start the campaign using viral marketing tactics? everyday i read in our newspapers about crime and as my organisation did before, we will make a change. so please help with your idea or email me if you require more info at info@soulutionz.co.za. more

Resolved Question: Web Hosting Question?

I am building a viral campaign which should hit critical mass very rapidly. I expect up to 30 million page views a month once it does that. How much bandwidth will I need? I'll have pretty lean pages. Are there web hosting companies out there with a pay-as-you go plan who can scale up automatically? My concern is that I do not want to pay in advance with a high capacity tariff plan and wait for the traffic to come. I would like tested hosts who are already hosting websites with high traffic and still cater to the SOHO market. more

Resolved Question: where can I buy 15 - 20,000 plastic sheep?

For a viral marketing campaign. I need to get hold of 15 -20,000 plastic sheep. They have to be about 3cm long and 1.5 cm high. Ideally they would have a website address printed on the side. If not I would attatch a tag with the same info printed on. They have to look like generic sheep, nothing fancy. These would not be sold and as a result must be as affordable as possible. I have contacted various suppliers world wide. Does anyone know anyone who could do this specifically? Or where is the best place to look.. Any help would be appreciated! thanks more

Resolved Question: Chris Jericho = Not The Answer?

Chris Jericho is not the savior. No offense to the Ayatollah of Rock ‘n Rolla, but he is not the answer. At the risk of alienating the millions (thousands?) of Jerichoholics, there is not enough long-term money or rating drawing power left in Chris Jericho. The viral marketing campaign that has marked the eagerly anticipated return of the former unified world champion has kindled memories of other saviors (or at least huge build ups) that, quite simply, did not pay off. Do not get the idea I am equating Chris Jericho’s ability, positively or negatively, with these workers - just compare the build up to the pay off. Resolved Question: Bored? Feed your brain and the Hungry too?

A friend just told me about this site, I thought it seemed cool. Here is the e-mail I got about it: "A food-linked word game put on the Internet a month ago has proved a runaway success and has already generated enough rice to feed 50,000 people, the United Nations World Food Program said Friday. FreeRice offers participants multiple-choice definitions to the meaning of a word, with each correct click generating 10 grains of rice for the WFP. The brainchild of American online fund-raising pioneer John Breen, the Web site FreeRice.com relies on advertising revenue to underwrite its rice campaign. "The site is a viral marketing success story with more than 1 billion grains of rice donated in just one month to help tackle hunger worldwide," said Josette Sheeran, executive director of the Rome-based WFP. On October 7, the day it was launched, just 830 grains of rice were donated. But the Internet community quickly caught on, and on November 8 alone 77 million grains were donated!!Here is the link: http://www.freerice.com/index.php more

Resolved Question: Has anyone else finding the marketing drive for 'the dark knight' has frustratingly ground to a halt ?

i don't expect them to give everything away like marvel have for Ironman, but if you're gonna launch a 'viral' marketing campaign, you gotta keep people interested right? If not, then its better value for money to build hype up with a out of the box marketing solution, rather than try and do something special for a while and then run out of puff months before release and while before the cryptic December trailer or whatever the hell they have cooked up crock of crap! more

Resolved Question: Are we being manipulated by viral marketing?

Recently, my office has received "virus-style" e-mails designed to get people to sign the petition against raod pricing on the Downing Street website. It claims that "750,000 signatures are required for the government to ... take any notice" and contained several apocalyptic predictions about cost and the possibility of getting speeding tickets on the basis of your tracked position. There was even a Y!A question with the same text: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Auw9_cti9dmurl92jjbCYNBJBgx.?qid=20070208023146AAx26Pe As a result, the petition has now been signed over one million times (50 times as many as would like to scrap ID cards, 250 times the number calling for a referendum on the EU) Now, I'm against installing tracking devices for road pricing (I think there are better, cheaper, simpler ways) - but I'm even more against being manipulated in this way by what I feel is a very clever and insidious marketing campaign. Am I alone in feeling used? more

Resolved Question: Serious answers only: how do I find someone to give financial backing to my product - folk like it; I'm broke?

I've been very seriously ill and in consequence don't have much money, but I do have a product that's had a certain amount of market-testing and could grow into a significant brand. All that I need to do is bring it to people's attention; after that it usually sells itself, but I need the capacity to do a viral marketing campaign in the UK and USA. I don't believe that I need a huge amount of money; the product is ready to go and is starting to build a following. However I need it to take off faster than it's going now and much of that is down to a simple lack of cash. My local BusinessLink is useless in terms of loans, grants, or advice. I can't approach my bank because all they see at the moment is the poor cashflow from the time that I was so ill. Any ideas on where/how I can find someone with a relatively small amount of cash to back a promising idea? Many thanks in advance. more
