Open Question: Can someone please help me summarize this article? called the itch. I need it for class tomorrow please help.?

Can someone please help me summarize this article? called the itch. I need it for class tomorrow please help.? The summary has to be a Concise summary not to much details Itching; Scratching; Oaklander, Anne Louise (Dr.); Neurology; Brain; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (O.C.D.); Perception It was still shocking to M. how much a few wrong turns could change your life. She had graduated from Boston College with a degree in psychology, married at twenty-five, and had two children, a son and a daughter. She and her family settled in a town on Massachusetts’ southern shore. She worked for thirteen years in health care, becoming the director of a residence program for men who’d suffered severe head injuries. But she and her husband began fighting. There were betrayals. By the time she was thirty-two, her marriage had disintegrated. In the divorce, she lost possession of their home, and, amid her financial and psychological struggles, she saw that she was losing her children, too. Within a few years, she was drinking. She began dating someone, and they drank together. After a while, he brought some drugs home, and she tried them. The drugs got harder. Eventually, they were doing heroin, which turned out to be readily available from a street dealer a block away from her apartment. One day, she went to see a doctor because she wasn’t feeling well, and learned that she had contracted H.I.V. from a contaminated needle. She had to leave her job. She lost visiting rights with her children. And she developed complications from the H.I.V., including shingles, which caused painful, blistering sores across her scalp and forehead. With treatment, though, her H.I.V. was brought under control. At thirty-six, she entered rehab, dropped the boyfriend, and kicked the drugs. She had two good, quiet years in which she began rebuilding her life. Then she got the itch. It was right after a shingles episode. The blisters and the pain responded, as they usually did, to acyclovir, an antiviral medication. But this time the area of the scalp that was involved became numb, and the pain was replaced by a constant, relentless itch. She felt it mainly on the right side of her head. It crawled along her scalp, and no matter how much she scratched it would not go away. “I felt like my inner self, like my brain itself, was itching,” she says. And it took over her life just as she was starting to get it back. Her internist didn’t know what to make of the problem. Itching is an extraordinarily common symptom. All kinds of dermatological conditions can cause it: allergic reactions, bacterial or fungal infections, skin cancer, psoriasis, dandruff, scabies, lice, poison ivy, sun damage, or just dry skin. Creams and makeup can cause itch, too. But M. used ordinary shampoo and soap, no creams. And when the doctor examined M.’s scalp she discovered nothing abnormal—no rash, no redness, no scaling, no thickening, no fungus, no parasites. All she saw was scratch marks. The internist prescribed a medicated cream, but it didn’t help. The urge to scratch was unceasing and irresistible. “I would try to control it during the day, when I was aware of the itch, but it was really hard,” M. said. “At night, it was the worst. I guess I would scratch when I was asleep, because in the morning there would be blood on my pillowcase.” She began to lose her hair over the itchy area. She returned to her internist again and again. “I just kept haunting her and calling her,” M. said. But nothing the internist tried worked, and she began to suspect that the itch had nothing to do with M.’s skin. from the issuecartoon banke-mail thisPlenty of non-skin conditions can cause itching. Dr. Jeffrey Bernhard, a dermatologist with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is among the few doctors to study itching systematically (he published the definitive textbook on the subject), and he told me of cases caused by hyperthyroidism, iron deficiency, liver disease, and cancers like Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Sometimes the syndrome is very specific. Persistent outer-arm itching that worsens in sunlight is known as brachioradial pruritus, and it’s caused by a crimped nerve in the neck. Aquagenic pruritus is recurrent, intense, diffuse itching upon getting out of a bath or shower, and although no one knows the mechanism, it’s a symptom of polycythemia vera, a rare condition in which the body produces too many red blood cells. But M.’s itch was confined to the right side of her scalp. Her viral count showed that the H.I.V. was quiescent. Additional blood tests and X-rays were normal. So the internist concluded that M.’s problem was probably psychiatric. All sorts of psychiatric conditions can cause itching. Patients with psychosis can have cutaneous delusions—a belief that their skin is infested with, say, parasites, or crawling ants, or laced with tiny bits of fibreglass. Severe stress and other emotional experiences can also give rise to a physical symptom l more

Open Question: How long will my rabbit live in these conditions?

She lives outdoors in a secure hutch. She's getting injected against myxomatosis (the one where they're face gets all gungy and they die) and viral hemmorage disease (I have no idea how to spell it, I hope you know what I mean) next week. She's not spayed. I clean out her hutch weekly and feed her every morning. As well as her normal pet store food I feed her carrot, banana, sultanas and other things like that. What age will she live up to?Oh, and she's getting a run soon, but in the meantime I play with her in my house for an hour or so every evening.Breed: I think her mother is a dutch, her father is just a sweet fluffy thing! She's a complete crossbreed :D more

Resolved Question: Why would anyone believe a flu vaccine would work?

OK, vaccines were invented when it was discovered that the body creates anti-bodies to fight off bacterial infections. By giving a person the disease cow pox, they would become immune to chicken pox. Since then, vaccines have worked very well against many diseases. However, influenza is caused by a virus, not a bacteria. As I understand it, viruses are much smaller than bacteria, and anti-bodies are not able to combat them, therefor are never created for viruses. Just as the hammer works great for nails, but not for screws; vaccines work great for bacteria, why would they have any use against viral infections? more

Voting Question: Weird Orthopedic Diseases.?

Ok so I have to do a project in my Anatomy class and I need an Orthopedic disease that is not many people have heard of. Something crazy. I've been trying to find some but I can't find a good one that I like. If there aren't any good ones do you have any suggestions for a viral or bacterial disease? Can anyone help me? more

Resolved Question: Should he see a hepatologist or a gastroenterologist for potential liver disease?

My husband (non-drinker) has high ALT liver enzymes, suggestive of liver damage. So far, all of the bloodwork has been inconclusive- very low cholesterol, normal CBC, slightly high albumin levels (cirrhosis usually causes low albumin), negative for viral hepatitis, diabetes and hemachromatosis. He has not had an ultrasound yet but the internist we saw suggested it could be something called NASH (fatty liver disease, for which he does not fit the stereotype). She referred us to a gastroenterologist for an ultrasound but I was wondering if we would not be better off seeing a liver specialist (hepatologist)?abijjan- thank you for your response. do you happen to know if a gastroenterologist would be qualified to make a diagnosis if it is in fact liver damage? We are having to be a bit careful with seeing a whole lot of specialists, as we are on a high deductable health insurance plan. We would like to "cut to the chase" so to speak, and see the most qualified person from the start. more

Voting Question: which is the best thesis statement?

I have a research paper due in a few weeks, and i cannot decide what thesis i like better. my topic is genetic engineering (think 1997 Gattaca). here are the statements i have come up with A.Can mankind be trusted with his own DNA, to use this breakthrough science for the better, or will he use it for the worse? B.What is frightening about genetic engineering; the thought to cure common problems, the power to end mankind, or the simple mystery behind how it works? C.What can we say about genetic engineering? Most of us do not know how it works, and fear for the worse, while others dream of a brighter tomorrow. D.This modern marvel of science will be broken down into 3 main points; what it is, why it can be good, and why it can be bad. E. While altering DNA can lead to such horrifying events as genocide or viral diseases, Genetic engineering is an important Scientific breakthrough. F. Genetic engineering is an important Scientific breakthrough because by altering DNA, we can cure many diseases and solve many of mankind's problems. G. Even though altering DNA can lead to such horrifying events as genocide or viral diseases, genetic engineering is an important Scientific breakthrough because with genetic engineering, we can alter DNA molecules and by altering DNA, we can cure many diseases and solve many of mankind's problems. or, if you can suggest any better that would also be appreciated thank you more

Voting Question: Is it blasphemous to get a Hepatitus C vaccine? Will I go to hell?

It has come to my attention, that this 'theory' of evolution has been used extensively in medical and forensic science. Particularly the creation of the Hepatitus C vaccine In health care, phylogenetic analysis (studies of DNA sequences to infer their evolutionary relatedness, or genealogy) of a pathogen such as bird flu or West Nile virus can lead to vaccines and to guidelines for minimizing the disease's transmission to and among people. A laboratory process called directed evolution that rapidly evolves proteins can improve vaccines and other useful proteins. Among directed evolution's successes are a vaccine against human papillomavirus and the hepatitis C vaccines. Shuffling segments of 20 different human interferons (a family of immune system proteins) has led to chimeric proteins that are 250,000 times more effective at slowing viral replication. An improved human p53 protein,a tumor suppressor, has yielded better inhibition of tumor growth in lab experiments, and researchers are working on transferring this success to individuals who have compromised p53 proteins. http://www.bellona.ru/enwl/Archive/2008/1229887463.58 Now, as a Christian, whom is a firm believer that the bible is the truth. If I get a hepatitus C vaccine, will I go to hell? Evolution calls God a liar and goes against his word. Should I also avoid the Bird Flu vaccine? Should I just die instead?@Daniel The bible says all animals were made in their present form, he made them all in one day. more

Voting Question: do anybody come across using tamiflu against parvovirus with success?

my pup dies yesterday of parvo inspite help from vet, now im worried of my other pup, because the vaccines (vanguard plus 5 in 1) been administered just for few days, and somebody says the vaccine only become effective after maybe 2 weeks. i feel so helpless to just wait and see. any ideas, opinions, and comment would truly be appreciated. As my feeling today i'm so depressed and just can,t sleep and eat. FEEL SO HELPLESS........browsing all day on web and came across this "I have been hearing around that Tamiflu will kill Parvo in dogs very quicklyThis oral medication is typically given for five days starting as soon as the diagnosis is made. It interferes with the reproduction of the parvovirus so that the patient’s immune system essentially has fewer enemy soldiers to combat. This medication is helpful in the treatment of parvo patients plus can prevent development of the disease when given to exposed puppies. The key is to begin this treatment before the virus has had a chance to maximize its numbers; if treatment is started later in the infection, there may be so many viral particles present that little benefit can be realized." more

Resolved Question: I a super depressed.. Can you give me some advice?

It is so true when they say "when it rains it pours".... It started New Year's Eve when we had to take our 6 month old baby to the ER. Several days prior he started getting sick and his doctor diagnosed him with viral conjunctivitis. Well he got worse which is why the ER. Turns out he had pneaumonia and had to stay in the hospital overnight. it took them 8 times to get a frickin IV in my poor baby. The past cpl wks have been spent nursing him back to health. We are also trying to close on a house and the other side keeps BSing around. The house we live in now has mold issues and with our 2 children its imperative we get this house. the landlord refuses to do anything about the mold. Over the past 2 weeks my father in law has had to put 2 of his dogs down and one passed away, which were all childhood dogs of my husband's. Yesterday our mastif mix chuckie slipped on the ice outside and we had to take him to the vet. He needed surgery and i took him for it this morning. turns out he had an old injury from before we adopted him and because it wasnt properly treated when he feel his kneecap was knocked completely out of place and ligaments were torn. the procedure is costing us $2,000... the only way to pay for it is to take money from the closing costs from the house... so now even if we can recoup that by closing (which is suppose to take place by the end of the month) we wont have any money to fix the things that needed to be done before we moved in.... my baby also had a doc appt yesterday for a follow up and now they are telling me he has "fifth disease" which is a viral disease a child can get from a weakened immune system (the peaumonia) and nothing can be done it must take its course. yesterday as well i got a letter from my insurance provider saying they will not be processing any claims because of some mess up the hospital did so i spent all morning trying to fix that. not to mention i had to apply for "care credit" to help pay for the surgery. only got $500, but im frickin worried thats gonna effect our home loan... i cant talk to my husband because he is always working lately, trying to get enough money to cover all these costs... i get maybe 2 hours between the time he comes home and the time he goes to bed, 1/2 of which is spent me cookin dinner. i really have no close friends, and i cant ask my dad for help because he already helped me with the down payment on the house... on the 22nd of this month is going to be my mother's first anniversary of her death.... God i just dont know how to handle everything...... im trying so hard to keep it together, i really am. i just dont know what to do at this point. can someone please give me some real advice?? more

Resolved Question: Can Bacterial Planets Be Free From Bacteria and its Bacterial Retinue? What are the tools?

Yes, all bacterial planets can be wiped out of bacteria. Technology is not here so we can listen to hi-pod. Technology is not here so we can bring our body full of viruses to live in spaceship in space. Technology is not here so we can keep viral people from viral countries from killing us all viral people and animals. Technology is here to wipe out bacteria from all planets, which bacteria are the sources of all wars, diseases, immorality, depravation, religions, death, and all horrors everywhere. What are the tools? Satellite emits beams from space. There are ultraviolet rays in existence that the rich people use to kill bacteria on themselves and in their house. Why don't they use this type of technology in satellite to wipe out bacteria in space, the air, the sea, and earth? They don’t use these systems to wipe out bacteria because they are infected with viruses put in them by bacteria. Bacteria convince mankind that they need them to survive. It is not true. We are not supposed to have bacteria in our system, otherwise bacteria wouldn't make us sick. There are no friendly bacteria. We don't need as well the insects, which are pure bacteria. Otherwise they wouldn't infect us with their viruses that cause us to die young and that cause our body to degenerate. The insects cause us to kill our children and the blood group "animals" species for them in sacrifice. They infect our immune systems with poison. They eat our body and make us worship them. They take advantage of our sorrow for our love ones that they kill. They make us build them clones. They torment us day and night. During the day they are biting us and during the night they are biting us. They know that they can be annihilated and that we have the technology. That is why bacteria keep wishing themselves "happy new year", "Merry Christmas", and create a giant web where everyone is powerlessly caught in it. These holidays are victory over our species and they wish themselves to continue to use us to eat our species, the blood species, that suppose to help us and to continue to disperse us so we can never be together to defeat them. more

Voting Question: Recurring mouth ulcers help please?

Okay, im 14 now (turning 15 soon) and i have had recurring mouth ulcers for more than two years. i will get them every single month two-five at a time. i get them on my tongue and all over my mouth but i have never had any kind of cold sore or sore outside of my mouth they have always been inside. when its really bad, ill have from 7-10 in my mouth and the doctor and orthodontist told me they are common and probably from a virus or stress related. Well, then i got a vaginal ulcer. It was so painful and scary because i had no idea how i could get one there, i'm a virgin and haven't had any kind of oral sex or anything basically so i went to my doctors office and got his assistant to look at it and she and him agreed that it couldn't be any kind of herpes or std because i am a virgin and they said it was probably something called apthous ulcers..? i think that was causing all of this. but they sent me to a pediatric gyno anyways who swabbed it and tested it. they didnt know what caused it but they didnt think it could be anything serious. test results came back from the swab and my gyno found two different stomach infections i was having and put me on medicine for them. So, i was taking two medications to fight off infections (one that gave me a nasty rash too) but still i got sick with fever and sore throat. i get sore throat/fever all the time but i never throw up usually. still my mom was worried and took me to the doctor. they were confused and didnt know how it was possible that i got sick because i was taking medication for infections. (i guess is was viral? i didn't really understand) they said i had some "mapping" on my tongue (my tongue was white and nasty looking) but i always get that when i have a sore throat. so they sent me to childrens hospital to get blood taken for testing. a week later, my doctor called saying my numbers were "off" and so they sent me to the infectious disease clinic in childrens hospital. this past week i went there and had to tell them about my ulcers and normal questions they had about my period and my vaginal ulcers (i had gotten another one in the same place after the first one went away) i had one of my ulcers that was popping up in my mouth swabbed and got more blood taken. they havent called back with the results yet sorry this is so long i just really want help and wanted to explain everything. the only symptoms i have now is that i am very tired and i get dizzy when i stand up (this has been happening for a long time) i get recurring ulcers andd thats about it. the doctors at the infectious disease clinic were asking me about something with my bowels acting up and they do act up sometimes but not like all the time so i didn't really have anything to say about it. i've been reading online and i'm guessing it is just the common apthous ulcers i just wanted someone else to confirm or share anything else that could be causing this & yes i do drink a lot of soda, but i cut it out completely at one point (& other acids)and still got them. i dont drink as much as i used to. & yes i do have braces, but i had been getting the ulcers before i had gotten my braces and i dont know how they could've rubbed up against my mouth this much and my orthodontist told me that the braces weren't the problem..& im getting them off soon. so thats all i have to say. and please answer this i know its not really a big deal i just want to know whats wrongi've seen the first answer to this, & wanted to say that i know they tested for any herpes or std and it came up negative. i'm not sure what stomach infection i had, but one medication i was on was called Bactrum (bactrim?idk) and the other medication was some long m name i dont remember. if you want to email me with any information my email is blueyedwonderx33@aol.com (or @yahoo.com, i have 2) thank you. more

Resolved Question: can someone rate my college essay?

Which one is better for privates??? and give me feedback!!!! prompt #1: I often wonder why I chose to dance. Frankly, I was unaware of the vulgar criticisms or emotional sufferings that would be potentially bestowed upon me. But, even after being exhausted from late night rehearsals and then coming home to juggle my school work, I still cannot fathom why I start the same routine the next day. Unfortunately, even with this dedication, I still have not gained the rights of becoming a principle dancer, instead my position has always been on upstage left. "You're on next. Good Luck." said the host. Nothing scares me more than knowing that I will be performing, by myself, in front of hundreds of people. My heart skipped a beat when the music to the act before mine ended, and the dancer swiftly impeccable finished her choreography impeccably. Doubting yourself is not the best mindset before entering a competition, but it seemed hopeless for me to even match up to anyone competing for this title. "Our next contestant competing for the title of Miss Teen Dance<name>. Please welcome her to the stage." As I took my first step on stage, I took a deep breath and promised myself to make no mistakes. Chills went through my spine, for never had I seen a veritable sea of eyes fixed on me. The music starts and I go straight into my ponche. My legs begin to shake while my body begins to fall, “I'm going to lose it. I'm going to lose it, “I tell myself. And at that very moment I lose control of myself-and tumble the ground. Trying to retain my pride, I force a smile to the judges as I conceal my low self-esteem. I had a strong urge to run off the stage, but allowed my body to keep dancing as if my mind and body were separate entities. Then the music ends and I squeeze in my last pose. With a faint applause and a couple of pity stares, I take a bow and walk off stage. Nothing is so haunting-so petrifying- than feeling yourself fall in front of hundreds of people. Wild thoughts started entering my head as I fled to the farthest bathroom so no one could hear me crying. I struggled to understand my tears-idle and frozen in the trenches of my eyes. I stared blankly at my own reflection in the mirror while a deafening silence enveloped me. I was disgusted with myself and would not-could not walk out of the door to face reality. But then I heard the words my mother used to say, “life still goes on," as I stepped out of immaturity to face reality. "Dancers, please report to the stage for the presentation of awards." As I approached the stage with a confident smile and my head held high, I have cultivated a true understanding of how hard work and achievement can lead to full fruition. Competing was just another way to understand my need for improvement, yet embracing my dedication and experience will always lead to something more than a trophy. In the end, this lesson has left me with a sense of fulfillment and purpose, a true prize for a lifetime. prompt #2: It's midnight and as I'm sitting here, the sound of monitors, inhalators, and respirators are driving me insane. I desperately ignore the noise as I focus on my parents conversing with a doctor through the limpid window in the next room. Anticipating on every facial clue or gesture, I suddenly see a teardrop roll gently down my mother's cheek. My father compassionately puts his arms around her, as they both shed to tears. Wild thoughts of sympathy started entering my head hysterically. I persuaded myself that I was healthy, but deep down I knew the reality of the situation was unbearable. Once again, the sound of hospital machines drowns me in my moment of sleep. I wake up in an unfamiliar place, but then remind myself that I'm in the hospital. "Has it yet been another day in this torture?" I ask myself. Out of the corner of my eye, I see my parents walk anxiously towards me. With their weary faces of dark circles and fatigued eyes, I knew that they had stayed overnight with me. My spirits suddenly lightened because they were here, but this feeling would only last succinctly for something serious was about to occur. "Sweetie, your father and I talked to the doctor last night." Flashbacks of my parent's hysteria yesterday reminded me of the gravity of what they were about to reveal. "The doctor says you caught the viral respiratory illness, SARS." I felt as if my heart stopped for a second, feeding no pulses to the heart monitor. Up to that moment, I had heard of SARS on the news, but never could I imagine myself, a fifth grader, being caught in the phenomenon. I did not cry, because deep inside I knew that I could overcome this disease. If I wasn't undergoing blood tests, then I was taking x-rays or newfound medicine. I grew frustrated with myself, for even my basic physical activities, such as breathing or walking, was difficult to accomplish. It is difficult to understand how life can be so ruthless even to the young. Nostalgic memories of playing on the schoocontinuing 2nd essay: Nostalgic memories of playing on the school playground or sitting in class are where I should be, but my innocence has been convoluted by the acts of tribulation. After three weeks of intensive care, I finally unlocked the agonizing barrier of my soul and flooded it with rejoice and jubilation. Looking back to this journey, I have come to understand the brevity of life. After almost experiencing death, valuing life at its fullest is a true priority. It really took something so daunting and-petrifying to make me appreciate what I had, rather than criticizing the meaningless, trivial matters. As adolescents, we do not realize the fragility of life, but this lesson showed me that children can also experience agonizing events. Although it has been six years since this incident, I will never forget the year of 2003. more

Voting Question: Can someone please help?

Some few months back, I was diagnosed with inflammation of the liver. After further medical examination, the doctor told me that he can’t identify the cause of the problem. He said it was neither viral nor bacterial infection. I later went to tropical institute (a hospital specialized in tropical diseases) where I was told that I had giardia, plasmodium fasciparum, and fasciola hepatica which was all treated. I went for control after treatment and I was told that the liver is working very well confirmed by an ultrasound device. But I’m still having pains around my liver with some abdominal discomfort and indigestion and cramp sensation. I’ve been to the hospital many times to complain but the doctor told me that the liver is working well after some control but the pain is still there. I have very sharp pain while breathing and the pain goes right to my back. My eyes are always reddish even if I sleep enough; Recently, I felt pain in my testicle though I still have to report that to my doctor. The good thing is that I eat very well though I feel full after eating just a little. I realized that my stool smell like a cooked liver. I don’t know what that means. But the doctor keeps on saying that despite all the pains my liver is fine from all control. Can someone tell me what is going ? ThanksI have been having fever accompany with pain around the liver area though the doctor said everything is ok with the liver.. more

Voting Question: What is Goodpasture’s syndrome and glomerulonephritis ?

The only thing I can find on Goodpasture’s syndrome is this. Quote Goodpasture’s syndrome is a rare disease that can affect the lungs and kidneys.it is an autoimmune disease—a condition in which the body’s own defense system reacts against some part of the body itself. When the immune system is working normally, it creates antibodies to fight off germs. In Goodpasture’s syndrome, the immune system makes antibodies that attack the lungs and kidneys. Why this happens is not fully understood. Researchers have identified a number of possible causes, among them the presence of an inherited component; exposure to certain chemicals, including hydrocarbon solvents and the weed killer Paraquat; and viral infections. Goodpasture’s syndrome can cause people to cough up blood or feel a burning sensation when urinating. But its first signs may be vague, such as fatigue, nausea, difficulty breathing, or paleness. These signs are followed by kidney involvement, represented first by small amounts of blood in the urine, protein in the urine, and other clinical and laboratory findings. Quote But the symptoms are vague . more
