I wrote a persuasive essay for English a while back and I thought it'd be appropriate to post it somewhere on the Internet, so why not Y!A? :D Anyways, I can't find my 4 or 5 sources anywhere but will edit them in if I find them. Tell me what you guys think...once I get the sources up you can check my internal citations :P Hybrids Are Bad for the Environment Hybrids are all the craze nowadays and the car companies are selling them under the impression that they are the ultimate in green car technology. They have an advertised MPG, or miles per gallon, that is much, much higher than gasoline and diesel fueled cars. They emit fewer greenhouse gases while running which contributes to the slowing of global warming, the natural heating of the Earth which can be intensified due to higher than normal amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Finally, they use less gasoline because of the MPG which will save the precious gasoline supplies in the world. But are they really that eco-friendly? Hybrids use Nickel-Cadmium or Lithium-ion batteries, Cadmium and Lithium being extremely rare in large quantities. The processing of the nickel in preparation for battery making releases copious amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air, which causes acid rain, which will destroy the ecosystem for miles around the nickel plants. Hybrids also advertise 19 MPG higher than what the realistic MPGs of hybrids are, and the precious gasoline that hybrids are using less of, will run out about the same time the precious minerals used in the hybrid batteries run out at current rates. There are also hybrids that plug into the wall, and of course that makes the emissions out of the car less, but the emissions from the coal being burned in 70% of the United States is much less clean than the gasoline and diesel fuels. Hybrids should not be developed further, as they are as destructive to the environment as gasoline cars are, as they use precious minerals in their batteries, cause acid rain around the nickel plants, destroying ecosystems, not saving them, and burn coal instead of gasoline for power. The best alternative for the most eco-friendly car is a clean diesel car with the PZEV, or Partial Zero Emission Vehicle, option available at many dealerships. The batteries used in hybrids destroy ecosystems around the mining and processing plants and the precious minerals used in hybrids will run out at about the same time as gasoline. Will this really solve the problem? The batteries in hybrids, in an example of the Prius batteries, made in Sudbury, Ontario, cause acid rain. According to Impact Lab, “[t]he acid rain around Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down off the hillside” (Prius), and with more and more companies creating hybrids, more and more battery processing plants will be made, causing more and more acid rain due to the copious amounts of sulfur dioxide emitted during battery processing. Not only do the batteries destroy the ecosystems around the plants, “after maybe 100,000 miles, the battery starts to lose its ability to charge. Tesla Motors performance figures even state that after 50,000 miles, the batteries will only perform at about 70% their optimal, factory level” (Why). What does that mean? That means that after 100,000 miles the battery will have to be replaced, and the used batteries cannot be recycled, and thus just go into landfills. And if you want optimal performance, you’d have to change the battery every 50,000 miles. The average gasoline car can be used until nearly 300,000 miles before ultimate failure with minor repairs, which is 4-7 batteries in a hybrid. And you have to remember that, according to Four-bits.com, “lithium… is pretty rare in large quantities. With projected increases in the use of lithium, the known mines would run out about the same time as oil” (Why). This makes hybrids just another quick fix that won’t fix the problem with the environment long term. Many hybrids are being converted into plug-in hybrids which plug directly into a household wall socket and charge via the coal-burning power plants that provide electricity to 70% of the United States, and coal emits many more greenhouse gases than gasoline does. This means that “coal-burning plants could be even worse for the environment than gasoline-burning engines…” (Hybrid). And even in the green-powered electricity states, such as California, Jim Motavalli of The Environmental Magazine quoted that the “ACEEE concluded that a plug-in version of the Toyota Prius could reduce CO2 emissions by a third over a conventional Prius hybrid, but only if its batteries were charged with California electricity — generated mainly from relatively clean sources. In the Midwest, dominated by coal-burning power plants, the report says the plug-in Prius would actually generate one percent more carbon dioxide” (Motavalli). California being the strictest state in emissions standard, this is a rare case of hybriThanks for your rebuttal :D I spent about 5 hours digging through all the pro hybrid stuff to get to this con hybrid stuff... I still dislike hybrids (I'm a fast car guy, not a fuel efficient one) but I was not aware that the sudbury (spelling?) was cleaned up... anyways, thanks for your rebuttal, I convinced my whole english class that hybrids were bad (including my hybrid-driving teacher) so now I have the actual facts. dollars4gold.com, cash4gold.com, moneyforgold.com etc Regarding the advertisements on tv to send these companies your 'damaged or unwanted gold' and they will pay you cash - whats the deal? (as in "what do they know that they arent telling us?") The commercials seem to target stupid people (no offence). It really feels like they are hiding something since all the do is flash images of cash infront of your face. All this seemed to pop up lately too - right around the economically turbulent times. I'm aware that gold is still the global currency. I've also been told gold is always a sound investment to protect your assets should hyper-inflation occur. Resolved Question: Affiliate marketing, is this necessary........?

Is it necessary to sign up with a group such as Online Data Entry Institute, or Global Cash Flow Network, just companies that show you the ropes on how to become an affiliate. The way the advertising is written for these companys actually make it sound as if you will receive info online and fill in a form and submit it in order to get paid. Actually its not like that and it can be very costly to join the company to learn marketing affiliating. I have tried several times to do this type of at home work but it becomes frustrating and I have to spend quite some time chatting online or calling in for help. I understand that you can make quite a bit of cash with marketing but when you dont have the cash to put into it to start and then have to put more cash into it for additional learning materials and so forth even into advertising or mailing lists, you end up more broke before you make money. Is all this necessary, is there something less stressful on the pocket and brain. Maybe affiliate marketing is not what I need. I am looking for something online to make money through without the heavy cash give out and headache to learn. I just know the basic stuff of computer usage not what I am reading and I feel really lost. more

I'm a college student, and the main thing I'll be using it for is homework, the internet, watching videos, etc. I am not a gamer AT ALL. About the most intense game I might play on my laptop is solitaire. But I do a TON of multitasking. I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. Below i have my uni personal statement.. if any one could help proof read it for me and make any suggestions i would be most grateful thanks... Why do I want to go on to higher education? Well, ever since I started secondary school at the age of eleven I have always wanted to pursue towards further education at university. Originally I wanted to become a Primary school teacher but since taking part in a lot of work experience in that field, my mind was suddenly made up that that this in fact was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I since have gained a great interest in the marketing industry, and I have come to notice that there are mass opportunities in the market, which has yet to be exploited, and I in the future want to do exactly that. I believe it would challenge my more creative side as well as testing my theoretical skills. I'm particularly interested in the more creative advertising side of marketing and the psychology behind it. I'm very business minded and I have many ideas, which I can expand on in the future. But before I do so I want to be more knowledgeable about the marketing industry, because if I do go into this field of work then I want to know what type of characteristics I need to build on in order to be successful in whatever I do in the future. My auntie is also part owner of a family business, so I have experienced business throughout my life and I believe this has contributed to my passion towards this subject. I have just recently undergone two weeks work experience at my aunties business. Here I helped to create leaflets and posters in order to reach out to the local and wider community. I found this thoroughly interesting and I now want to gain a much deeper insight into the marketing sector in order to pursue a career in the industry in the future. In October I returned from a 2 ½ month voluntary project in Kenya run by a government scheme called platform2. Whilst in Kenya I lived with a local family for the ten week duration and worked on an ongoing conservation project in order to help conserve the eco system by improving the livelihoods or communities adjacent to the forest through an environmentally sustainable income. This experience has undoubtedly broadened my perspective of the world. It has been portrayed to me that out in Kenya everyone was trying to help one another get by, they were all in the same boat. Here, most people are trying to just get in their own boat and sail their own course. Over there they know that if they don’t build a boat together, they sink. Volunteering in Kenya in an underprivileged community has undoubtedly developed my life skills and fostered the creativity within me. It has nurtured my ability to be flexible in changing conditions, and adapt and adjust to new environments and cultures. If a company wanted to go global with their product, would they first look for similarities in their own and the foreign market and try to standardize the advertising as much as possible in order to save money or would they try to adapt to the foreign market first? Which makes more sense, looking for similarities first or just realizing straight away that the cultures are so different that you would get better results if you tailored the advertising message to the market? Is there such a thing as a completely culture free product? Sorry I'm so confused. We'll write an exam in our marketing class on the topic in march and I found different information on the web.
