Resolved Question: Evil Capitalism/Corporatism/Fascism rears it's head most proudly these days doesn't it?
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Companies-brace-for-end-of-apf-2437567795.html?x=0 This story from the AP lamenting the closing era of "Cheap-Chinese-made" goods is amazing? It hints that maybe it could be profitable to build here (in the US) again (GASP), but it's not a welcome situation according to this article.. oh no. Read it.. "Foxconn refused repeated requests for comment on plans to move much of its manufacturing capacity to central China's impoverished Henan province, where a local government website has advertised for tens of thousands of workers on its behalf" Now that paragraph triggers an immediate reaction for me (lets go exploit all those poor people-sarcasm) but seriously that is the thrust of this article... Are we at the point where we actually want the corporation to export our jobs to the poorest places in the world ? So they can be profitable, while we sink into the "service" economy ?...really ? If so.. you have truly accepted fascism, It's not health care reform, it's not wall street bailouts (well it's actually both of those..but not the way most of you are thinking of it) it's not "Fear of the Black President" These puppet heads are all the same. It's the total submission by labor for Capital and the mass acceptance of wage slavery... we are worth more than the shareholders. As you ready your reply..if you are about to attack me for asking this question, ask yourself first...why ? Why does corporate profit outweigh the needs of your country men/women, their families and all of our communities? The brown shirts aren't coming for you... the "wal-mart" blue shirts are. moreResolved Question: Which business program of study should I take, I appreciate any help!?

After college (marketing degree) I am having a heck of a time holding a job, I am developing a distaste of corporate behavior and generally hate work. I have focused on sales jobs, thinking that I could make a lot of money with little work. What I have discovered is that I am a horrible sales person. Job 1- Selling advertising space for a huge job search company. I lasted about 7 months and quit a week before I was going to get fired. (90% of my training class was gone at that time) Job 2 - Selling online training to HR and IT professionals - lasted almost a year, me getting fired was again inevitable used up my vacation hours, came back and quit. Job 3 - 10 months woot! selling insurance this time, they saw potential but my progress was not fast enough, they fired me. I did learn from these experiences and have grown as a person, but just not too sure how to answer an employer when they ask me why I blew through so many jobs (with huge reputable companies) How should I respond? moreResolved Question: How do I promote my restaurant?

This country just loves to sugarcoat everything and join bandwagons. No one likes to think for themselves. It's all about creating happy endings, even if they have to be bought with credit cards. The worship of athletes above all else is pretty disgusting too. Americans have no idea how much of a sham their professional and amateur sports leagues are. None of them see that the NCAA is nothing but slavery, and that corporations waste so much money on advertising and endorsement deals for athletes that it is utter mismanagement that all of us pay for. Jennifer Granholm never did or said a thing to Kwame, in spite of everything that was going on. After the Gallaraga incident yesterday in the Tigers game, she was on TV almost immediately, defending him. I mean, seriously woman, aren't you supposed to be trying to improve the state of Michigan and bring jobs back? What ARE you doing? Why did you let Kwame run Detroit down for so long and do nothing to get rid of him? Maybe it's just the state of Michigan that is idiotic, but I tend to notice that people in America care more about sports that just about ANYTHING else. I remember in Australia how informed people were about current events and politics, and how realistic they were about life. People in America just want to be happy corporate drones. It's sad.I never said pro sports was slavery, I said NCAA football is. The fact is, the players don't get paid when they play in the Rose Bowl, BCS title games, Final Four/Championship, etc., but people are making billions off of them. That's not right. Not all of them have careers in the pros. The fact is, it's just not right. moreResolved Question: being 18 and needing to decide on a career?

I have a BBA already in Entrepreneurship. I don't really want to work in "Corporate America" any longer. I have seen tons of recent advertising however on the executive MBA from near and far schools. Would one even make sense if I continue to pursue my own business ventures? What are the costs? Would choosing a nearby school such as Texas A&M or Univ of Houston be better off than say Florida State or Univ of Phoenix. (I live near Houston). Just curious if it might be worth the efforts. I mean it seems like every time they show a college graduate on tv, they work in a corporate/business type setting. I'm going to college to double in advertising/history (don't ask why), I do know for sure that i definitely don't want to end up in "corporate cubical", nor do i wanna do blue collar work, i come from a long line of blue collared men and i've learned a lot but im tired of it moreVoting Question: Staffing Agencies in Houston that are for people finding jobs in Communication fields.?

I was working today and a couple of ladies got extremley angry that I couldnt substitute their sides for a different choice. I was told by my manager that we arent supposed to at the moment because it was a brand new deal that we were promoting. They threatened to call corporate on me and my manager just because I was following orders. Saying that I was "breaking the law" because we had to sell it as advertised? Is this true? (who would go thru this much over some food???)its really sad because it was just a fast food place...it sucks that this is happening....i even gave them the sides they wanted though i couldnt and they still were angry...it shocks me how worked up they got over something so simple. moreVoting Question: Climbing the corporate ladder, how hard is it really?
I want to study Marketing in College but I often dream big, it's something I've done my whole life. I put goals ahead of me and do everything possible to attain them. So, it got me wondering how far could I really get in the Business world? How hard is it? Don't just say very hard, I'm aware of that. Also, I just want to point out, I'm not talking about reaching a CEO position, that's something I honestly don't want. That would require me to be a complete workaholic and I'd like to have a life, thank you. But growing up in a family where the resources were close to nothing, I've always dreamed of not only living comfortable but being able to spend a little money on things I want. So, I guess the correct question would be, how hard is it to get to a point where I'm earning GOOD money? (I don't wanna say where I'm rich...it sounds so superficial) What sort of effort and time and education would it require to get to six figures? Also, this is off-topic but I've always wanted to be able to do marketing for anything media related (Specially Fashion, TV, Advertising, Video Games). That way I believe in what I'm selling and I'll do a good job, is it easy to get a job in one of those? Or are you even able to choose what sort of business you'll be working for? Thank you if you read and thank you if you choose to answer something worth my time ;) Have a good day! moreResolved Question: Can someone please tell me Fred meyer's rain check policy? Thanks!?
I looked all over for it but can not find it.. this is what happened to me today.. Drove to the second store and they too were totally out!! ( not to mention only had 2 dif sizes of the huggies diapers on sale.. newborn and size 6!) I asked for a rain check (for the wipes) from the customer service desk, and got informed they do not give rain checks on them if they are not in the ad, but they WERE in the ad, and the customer service lady didnt bother to look in the ad, and just straight up turned me down…. Soo.. i went over to the sticker that says $1.99 AD (says Ad right on the sticker!!!) and had to get back in line the lady said “oh i guess we can give you a rain check on these… ” SO FRUSTRATED! Are we a pluralist society with diverse and competing interests, or is power concentrated in the hands of the political party leadership, media, and corporate advertising which sets our public agenda and concentrates power within a ruling elite? moreResolved Question: Is this grounds for an EEOC complaint, or ADA lawsuit?
My girlfriend had been working for an engineering firm for about 2 years. About 6 months after she went to work there she was diagnosed with kidney disease and had to go on dialysis and. While on dialysis her employer allowed her to go on part-time status working only 24 hours per week. After 8 months on dialysis she recieved a kidney transplant and was out of work on long term disability for six months. Her boss knew she was on the transplant list and would be out six months after the surgery and indicated he was ok with this. She returned to work full-time exactly six months following the transplant. About three months later she developed complications and became ill while on a business trip and had to cancel the remainder of the trip and return home to see his doctor. She had to to be hospitalized several days for testing and a procedure to remove a kidney stone and insert a stent. The day after she returned to work following this hospitalization her boss called her into the office and told him her she was being "laid off due to lack of work". This is a large multi-national firm with hundreds of employees and the company is doing VERY WELL having recently been awarded Federal contracts worth nearly half a billion dollars. The company kept two other less experienced employees in her office who did basicly the same job. One of these employees was a new hire right out of college with NO EXPERIENCE who had just started work there a month before my girlfriend was laid off. At the time my she was laid off the company had an opening for a position with a job description IDENTICAL to my girlfriend's job posted on their corporate website. If she was laid off due to lack of work why were they advertising for new employees? They were also in the process of moving to a larger office because her boss said they were planning to expand the staff in that office and needed more space. I am pretty sure my girlfriend was targeted for layoff due to her medical problems because she was the only person in that office who was laid off and she was much more experienced and had been with the company longer than the two other employees in the same position that they kept. After she was laid off she contacted someone in HR to ask questions about benefits and this person apparently slipped up and told her that she was not let go due to "lack of work" as she was told but because of the quality of her work. She has had good performance reviews ever since she has been with the firm so she is not sure why they would say this. She contacted the regional manager (her boss's boss) to clarify why he was laid off and these other less experienced employees were kept and they beat around the bush and told her that her education and job skills did not match up with the current work load they had, etc., etc. This is total BS because the other employees they kept have the EXACT SAME job description and she worked together with them on projects. When she pointed this out they they got very defenseive and a company attorney who was also in on the conversation told her they are an "at will employer" and added that "since Virginia is a right to work state they can legally terminate any employee at any time, for for any reason and don't even have to give a reason." Is this really true, I can't believe this is legal? Fortunately, my girlfriend managed to get on disability due to her health problems but it only pays her about 1/7 of what she was earning as an engineer. She has a printout of the job posting that they had online the day she was laid off and also a bunch of newsletters and emails sent out by he CEO that document the financial status of the company as well as the new contracts they had just been awarded. Should she file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC since she still has several weeks before the deadline to file? Does she have grounds for an ADA lawsuit against this company? moreResolved Question: Need some help regarding Professional/Business Ethics!?

When COMPANIES advertise for job openings the salary budget is "Negotiable". Then they get the employment agencies to help them to source for the same openings but setting different salary budgets for different employment agencies to work on. Currently employment agencies “Do Not Disclose Companies Name" to jobseekers they represent. Consequently the same jobseeker may be sending to the same "Company" directly or through different employment agencies with different salary budgets. 1) Now if you are the Company receiving the same CVs from the same jobseeker with different salary budget via different sources what will you think and do with the same jobseeker ? 2) If you are a Jobseeker, do you think you will get the job ? 3) If you are the Employment Agency do you think you can close the deal ? The consequences will be the Companies asking to see more CVs and lose confidence with the jobseekers at large and ended up taking a longer time for employment agencies to close deals. This will affect the survival of jobseekers and employment agencies. So I urge Employment Agencies “To Disclose Company Names" they represent to all jobseekers from the start to avoid duplicated CVs with different salary budgets ended in the hands of Companies. Jobseekers and Employment Agencies have to work closely to share information about Companies who are out there to "Test Market" and wasting jobseekers and employment agencies time, effort and money bearing in mind that the Companies do not pay a single cent at all. By not disclosing and sharing information about the "Companies" amongst employment agencies and jobseekers it will only drive employment agencies and jobseekers into desperation. Companies will take advantage of this weakness and keep setting lower and lower salary budgets for employment agencies to work on. This will further create for frustration and desperation amongst employment agencies and jobseekers. The job market in Singapore is small and the employment agencies and jobseekers have to work "Smart" and not let the Companies “Fool” them. Employment agencies should not worry about jobseekers sending their CVs direct to their Clients cause most of the Companies have that "Shopping for the Best Candidate" attitude through various sources. At the end of the day it is all about which jobseeker has the "BEST MATCH" in the eyes of the Companies not the employment agencies nor the jobseekers.Companies may instruct employment agencies “Not to Disclose" their Companies Names to jobseekers so that they are better "Manipulate" jobseekers and employment agencies. Companies usually want to portray themselves as good employers who are willing to pay what the jobseekers are worth for. So they choose to hide behind these employment agencies to "test market" without dirtying their own hands. I WELCOME PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THIS ISSUE !! Do you find it annoying that corporations, such as car companies advertise excessively through televised sporting events such as baseball games. You will often see the "Coors Light Freeze" cam, the "Jeep Wrangler play of the game", Lexus and Mercedes logos introducing a line-up and outfield. Throughout the years, there has been a greater and more prominent display of corporate advertising and of course, beer advertising, during baseball games(and all major sporting events as well). Do you find all of this advertising, annoying?I said "corporate advertisements." Excuse the redundancy haha moreResolved Question: What do you think of Hollister, Aeropostale, Abercromibie, etc?
I personally hate brand names of any kind. Hollister, Aero, A&F, even sports brands like Nike and UA and crap. Whenever I get sports brand names I get them because, unlike fashion names, they actually ARE better quality, and I get the ones with the smallest brand markings possible. As for fashion brands, $30 for one little shirt that's too small to begin with and then just shrinks even more in the wash is insane pricing to me, I'd be fine in some $5 Wal-Mart tee compared to that. I prefer to have shirts that either have some pretty picture or sarcastic joke plastered on the front instead of having some brand name to define my status in society. I don't enjoy suffocating the student body with gallons of perfume all the time. And I really, really prefer not to be a walking billboard to advertise some annoying franchise that portrays shallow values to kids and somehow thinks that having a name written on the front will automatically make you cool. I'm not a sheep, never will be. For all of you who insist that "oh, they're clothes aren't expensive! It's really cheap pricing if you ask me!" or "sometimes the sales have really good prices, they have a cute style there...": I don't have a mommy and daddy who can give me 3,000 dollars to get new clothes for school. $25 is NOT a sale. Brand names don't make you automatically cool, they just make you look like a sheep. I prefer to be an individual, thank you very much. And for all of those who are going to say "you think that everyone who wears *insert brand name here* are stupid sheep, well that's just rude!", I can almost guarantee that your spelling and grammar will prove just how much intelligence is stored in those perfume poisoned brains of yours. As for quality, they don't last longer. I've actually had Wal-Mart clothes that have lasted far longer than my friend's Hollister and Aero clothes. Far longer. And when they actually were in retiring condition, they were still less damaged and shrunken than the brand crap. So, for anyone who shares my belief that Hellister, Eeriepostale, American Evil and Abercrazy & Itch suck for several reasons, you're awesome. For all those sheep who want to justify why overpriced, unoriginal clothes are so awesome and cute, we'll just let you live in your ignorance about why plastering a brand name on yourself does no good to you whatsoever, just helps bump corporate America up farther than they need to be. If you need a further explanation, there's a great blog here about WHY exactly most brand names are completely pointless. http://journal.amanita.net/2007/11/01/i-hate-hollister/ moreVoting Question: In a country that guarantees us freedom of speech; does the government have the right to prevent...?

My husband is VERY sweet and loving, But he is making me crazy! He just graduated from college with a degree in Graphic Design. He racked up tons of debt going there. He is very talented; he even was awarded Best Portfolio in his class. It has been three months since he graduated. He has applied for many jobs and gone on a few interviews. He just doesn't have the "go-getter" personality. Most of the jobs he applied for were found by me. One job he said he "wasn't interested in." When I prodded him, he said "it seems too corporate." He want to work for a boutique advertising firm or start his own business, which I think is great. But right now he needs a full-time job with benefits. Meanwhile, I have been working a job I can't stand for almost two years to support us. I make almost twice as much and hate my job. It is seriously so frustrating. I don't want to be a nag. That is a fast way to ruin a marriage. But what can I do to motivate him? moreResolved Question: Why is it impossible to find a GOOD paying job?
Honestly, this is pretty ridiculous! I have a degree, I'm smart and I have excellent writing skills. Yet when going on Craigslist to search for a second job, its damn near impossible. Can someone please answer the following questions (and I do appreciate the time you'll take to do this, as this is frustrating): 1) Why do companies advertise they're Hiring, and then when I email a cover letter & resume that show I'm qualified for the job, I hear nothing? I understand many are applying, but come on! Not even a phone call for an interview? You usually don't hear back if the company isn't hiring at all. But I'm applying to places that ARE advertising they're looking for employees! 2) I'm appalled at how low many of the jobs start you off at. Dog walkers, baby-sitters, hell office assistants are only getting paid $9-10 an hour?! Seriously, in THIS economy? How is the employer expecting the person to pay their rent or even live manageable? And this is 2010. Cost of living anyone? For what I would have to put up with in terms of the child (ONE place required CPR certification!!!) that's basically slave wages. $15 an hour should be the minimum. 3) SO MANY marketing and salary jobs require the applicant to make the majority of their salary on commission. So not fair! So in order to make $40-80,000 a year, I'm expected to make the company money by basically being a corporate hustler? Why can't there be jobs that just pay me $50,000 a year without expecting me to "always be selling" or "getting those sales boosted"? I'm not your average marketing type of gal. I'm an artist, I didn't go to school to be in that field. 4) Scam jobs are everywhere! Why so many places advertising to "get rich quick" with them, knowing its so obvious theyre out to get your dollars? Please, only answer if you're going to give me legitimate reasoning and not just half-ass sentence responses. Thanks! Not EVERYONE has a degree!!! And the jobs I'm applying for that are declining me are ones I AM qualified for. I'm a Tour Guide at my current job, so when I apply to be a tour guide at another job, I'm shocked not to hear anything! How are you not going to interview me and I have experience already in what you're looking for? moreVoting Question: ACCOUNTING QUESTION NEED HELP!?

Constitutionally, the government has the power to "regulate interstate commerce", correct? Therefore, the government would have the right to force people to purchase health-magazine subscriptions [with content on improving diet, nutrition, health, exercise, fitness], correct? Here is the 10-point program that I propose: 1) These health-related magazine subscriptions [produced and distributed through private corporations -- thus we avoid the appearance of nationalized health care] would be made available in "public exchanges" online. 2) The magazines and their editorial policies would be thoroughly reviewed by federally-certified doctors to make sure they promote federally-approved drugs, therapies, and surgeries. 3) A primary aim of the program is to reach those people who currently lack health-magazine subscriptions. [The aim of this program is not to increase the profits of privately-owned health-magazine corporations and their corporate advertising clients.] 4) This program cannot really work efficiently unless all participate, that's why it must be a mandatory program. The price of health-magazine subscriptions has risen dramatically, because too many people are getting sick, and not enough healthy people are buying them. 5) This program would help slow the rising costs of health-magazine subscriptions, and who knows, could eventually even bring down the costs of health-magazine subscriptions. However, this program would require people to buy a scubscription at whatever the free-market prices are. [OK, perhaps technically that last bit should read be "enhanced free-market" prices.] 6) Forced buyers of low income would be federally-subsidized, and... 7) the best way to pay for this program would be to tax the people who have been the most successful. Since these people already have easy-access to health-magazine-subscriptions, they shouldn't mind helping to provide others with similar subscriptions. 8) This program would over time reduce the national deficit, because expert government accountants have done the projections, and that's what the projections show. 9) If people were forced to spend money as soon as the law were passed, they might not see the program in a balanced way -- so the forced-purchase part would only kick in about 4 years later (well beyond the next presidential election in 2012). 10) However, many of the taxes implemented by this program would kick in immediately. This reform would not be socialism or fascism, as long as constitutionally-elected and legally-lobbied representatives voted it into law. [Coming soon: Federally-mandated purchases of multiple-vitamins -- the vitamins would be produced by private corporations, under federal guidelines, of course] . moreVoting Question: What are some unknown high power scandals that most people dont know about?

<Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. So far, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner in the White House has been very articulate and continues to earn support because of his rhetoric. Beyond words, what have all the liberals in congress done? After all, we are still: - Occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and rattling swords at Iran. - Without single-payer universal health coverage. - Consuming dangerous food additives like MSG and aspartame. - Subject to child targeted advertising promoting toxic food with excess fat, sugar, and salt. - Lacking adequate laws to help unions get a foot hold. - Moving toward globalization and corporate domination of the world. - Failure to stem international trade agreements that have pushed unemployment up in the US. - Failure to reverse the Patriot Act. So far, I'd give the Democrats in US congress a big fat F. I'd give Obama an A+ for rhetoric and a big D- for making the changes he promised during his campaign. The true corporate establishment colors of the Democrats are becoming crystal clear. What real change have the Democrats in US congress done for you over the past 30 years? Beware of politicians who promise one thing and do something different. It's time for real change, not just window dressing. Do you really think the first lady will attack the fast food industry? Do you really think establishment Democrats are the answer to these systemic problems? moreResolved Question: Do those who believe that corporate advertising in campaigns be prohibited also believe . . .?
that newspapers be prohibited from running editorials endorsing a candidate? If not, why not? It's a corporate expenditure, an "advertisement," naming a candidate but not formally coordinated with the campaign. Actually, "media corporations" were exempted from the prohibition struck down by the court. Should they be? Isn't their influence even greater than a business corporation whose communication comes in the form of an "ad," versus a nightly newscast or daily paper? And what constitutes a "media Corporation?" Could any business organization with a public relations newsletter qualify? That would then be "freedom of the press," would it not? Is the problem that some people have with the decision the fact that corporations are involved (again, The New York Times is owned by a corporation), that large sums of money are involved, or that people will be swayed by the message? What is the specific concern, and how did exempting media corporations address that concern? Thanks. more
