Open Question: What are some controversies in advertising/marketing?

I'm doing my senior project on advertising. I plan to ask a local store (whose owners I know) if I can do an ad campaign for them (commercial, print ads, posters). But before we do the actual "product" we need to write a research paper. So I need a research topic, that includes my point of view and an opposing point of view. There are many controversies in advertisement this day in age, but what is one that is relevant to my project idea? more

Open Question: China controls 97% of "rare earths" needed for electronic products. Should China keep for itself?

China controls 97% of the global supply of "rare earths" needed to make electronic devices. Without rare earths there would be no cell phones, LCD TVs, or guided missiles. China has drastically reduced its exports of rare earths and western countries are extremely worried. Should China sell its rare earths? Or keep rare earths to itself and seize control over the global electronics market? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-29/china-defends-control-of-rare-earth-exports-as-move-to-protect-environment.html more

We design and deliver the systems, software and services that drive next-generation communications networks. Backed by Bell Labs research and development, we use our strengths in mobility, optical, access, data and voice networking technologies, as well as services, to create new revenue-generating opportunities for our customers, while enabling them to quickly deploy and better manage their networks. Our customer base includes communications service providers, governments and enterprises worldwide. We have three segments organized around the products and services we sell. The reportable segments are Integrated Network Solutions (“INS”), Mobility Solutions (“Mobility”) and Lucent Worldwide Services (“Services”). INS provides a broad range of software and wireline equipment related to voice networking (primarily consisting of switching products, which we sometimes refer to as convergence solutions, and voice messaging products), data and network management (primarily consisting of access and related data networking equipment and operating support software) and optical networking. Mobility provides software and wireless equipment to support radio access and core networks. Services provides deployment, maintenance, professional and managed services in support of both our product offerings as well as multi-vendor networks. Beginning in fiscal 2001, the global telecommunications market deteriorated, resulting from a decrease in the competitive local exchange carrier market and a significant reduction in capital spending by established service providers. This trend intensified during fiscal 2002 and continued into fiscal 2003. Reasons for the market deterioration included general economic slowdown, network overcapacity, customer bankruptcies, network build-out delays and limited availability of capital. We believe that the market for telecommunications equipment has stabilized and is starting to grow in certain areas. The growing demands of enterprises and consumers for additional services tailored to their needs is creating the need for a new convergence of networks, technologies and applications. Open Question: Cosmetic products for a better looking face?

I spend a lot of time working in a dark room behind a computer all day long. This certainly does not help me look better. Oftentimes, my eyes are hurting and I have a very fragile pale skin. I have a tired and bad looking face (even though I wash it). When I go outside, the natural light of day is too strong and I need to frown like crazy. I look like a criminal and sometimes the people I cross remind me of that fact in some way or another. I just look bad and when I smile it's a dirty, ugly smile because of it. So I wanted to know if there are some good products for men on the market that cater to those problems of fatigue, dry, pale and fragile skin? Products that can revitalize my skin and help me look better? I really want to look better! It's so important. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Habitrail OVO loft for a syrian?

I know I have already asked this sorta thing yesterday, but im still totally un-decided. So, Im getting a hamster in the next 3 weeks, and I've been looking at cages. I was pretty much decided on a 10-20 gallon tank with a tank-topper, but while looking through the pet store, I found this: http://www.habitrail.com/ovo/eng/products/habitats_loft.php?color=white It is the largest habitrail cage on the market, and its actually bigger than it looks. Here are my main concerns about it: ♦ Not enough room in the loft, and that the hamster will grow and get stuck in the add-ons tubes. Then I'll have to buy a whele new cage! :( ♦The wheel might not be big enough, and it doesnt look like their is enough room for a large hamster wheel. ♦I've read reviews that the water bottle is leaky, and you cant really get a new one for that cage. So, those are my main concerns about the cage. I would like to know if I should get it, or just a tank. Answers from syrian hamster owners that have had this cage are greatly appreciated.http://bit.ly/dklKR3 See, they are almost the same size. Like I said, my main worries are that the hamster will outgrow the add-ons that I buy and that the wheel is *too* noisy. This syrian hamster seems to fit in fine?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRweqeFBOKA more

Open Question: Anybody?.......Help please.....?

1. In this problem, we analyze the profit found for sales of graphic t-shirts. A demand equation (sometimes called a demand curve) shows how much money people would pay for a product depending on how much of that product is available on the open market. Often, the demand equation is found empirically (through experiment, or market research). a. Suppose a market research company finds that at a price of p = $25, they would sell x = 60 shirts each month. If they lower the price to p = $15, then more people would purchase the shirts, and they can expect to sell x = 75 shirts in a month’s time. Find the equation of the line for the demand equation. Write your answer in the form p = mx + b. Hint: Write an equation using two points in the form (x, p). Show all your work. more

Open Question: SHOULD IT BE ILLEGAL TO......................................?

take untaxed cigarettes bought from the Indian Reservations and between state lines and out of the territory of those areas without paying the tax? This is a HUGE problem with the States losing millions of dollars because of the loophole of smokers being able to buy them from Indian Reservations and out of state and then transporting them to their homes. If they wanna smoke, stink up the air, create fire hazards, kill other people with their 2nd hand smoke, they should pay the tax especially when they are dieing in the hospital, that money would go to help them. It also discourages people from even starting to smoke in the first place due to the high price. Fewer and fewer teens are even starting to smoke and it looks like the tax could be SAVING LIVES. Cigarettes cost as much as $20 in New York and thats a GOOD thing. They should charge a THOUSAND DOLLARS for each cigarette. Maybe then people will be smart enough not to smoke. Theres also lots of very dangerous criminal black markets gaining ground from buying them at those places and in cheap states and selling them in higher tax states. The cigarettes at the Reservations are DIRT CHEAP!! The criminals are making LOADS of money! There are now drug cartels shooting each other over their competition of the cigarettes. Anyone that gets caught selling untaxed cigarettes should face the death penalty if thats whats necessary to stop it. I think they should have ATF agents, law enforcement and high security all ARMED and ready at ALL the borders between every state line and between the Indian Reservations and out of the Indian Reservatives. Helicopters, Night vision, Satellites, Swat, ect the WHOLE 9 yards! That way no one could smuggle them and then sell them some place else. If anyone tries to take the cigarettes, they will have to pay the tax on it or else they wont be able to have them. Or those Indians should be forced to pay the tax like everyone else! Thats the only way to stop this!! There also needs to be a HIGH PRICE FLOOR on ALL tobacco products so there is NO CHEAP SMOKES! For all you critics, I guess you dont understand how DEADLY cigarettes are to the smokers health, and everyone around them would have to SUFFER from 2nd hand smoke! You seen the COMMERCIALS for what it does it you??? Theres smokers throwing cigarette butts out the windows of their cars and they LITTER it like crazy like pigs! Its also a FIRE HAZARD! Anywhere those butts goes could set something on fire and possible take more lives. IT NEEDS TO STOP!! NOW!!Should it be illegal for ANYONE to take Cigarettes from one place to another where its taxed at a higher amount? Like smokers going to Indian Reservations to get cheap cigarettes so he can smoke em at his house which is out of that Reservation? more

Open Question: Why do companies only sell small quantities of a product at a time?

I specifically would like to know why some tech companies only give limited quantities to vendors to sell in a given period of time. For example, when the new xbox came out in 2006 (?), I remember there was a big controversy because Microsoft only released a very limited quantity at first. I specifically remember a Gamestop near me only had 19 when it first came out. 19!?!? Also, I remember once standing outstide a Best Buy in the freezing cold for 3 hours (5:30 - 8:30) for a Wii for my little brother (that Christmas time spirit!). There were maybe 80 people online. There were 24 Wiis....I was the 25th. This conversation came up because someone commented that they are only selling 3 iPhone 4s at a time right now at some stores. You have lines out the door, and only three people get one? There must be some sort of marketing strategy here. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: why are people against apple computer?

I'm thinking about buying an iMac but there are so many people who I know who absolutely hate Apple brand products (even though they themselves own some of them) and are ready to cut ties with me if I even walk into an Apple store. They tell me to stay with Windows as it's just as dependable (it's not) if I do only one thing with it. Or linux which would take much longer than I want to get working the way I want and some of the programmes I use won't even run on it. I don't understand what the angst over Apple product and supposedly supporting Steve Jobs is so bad. They use analogies like having the "hood" on my car welded shut, and that Apple has sued their customers for infringements for tempering with the software. I own an android phone which is open source code, and open source is not all it's played up to be. Most of the applications for it don't work well or at all, at least Apple threatens to pull stuff off the market (online store) if what someone makes doesn't work. If companies like microsoft made automobiles that were as dependable as their software, no one would buy them. I want something that works and the brand or logo on the side of the tool is not a real concern for me.I should really stop asking questions on here, I get what I pay for with yahoo. Here's something I just read that's more concrete and object (mostly) than anything anyone so far has said (minus the last answer). http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApqrV5KnLgaP63TANjRAPVgjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20091007094728AAzR4nD more

Open Question: help me with my tesT!! PLEASE?

¿main idea?? HELP ME PLEASE? Fill in the line with main idea of the paragraph and the type of paragraph that you read. Guatemalan exports of non-traditional agricultural products rose from US$25 million in 1986 to a US$89 million level in 1992. Preliminary figures for 1993 indicate that the total revenue of exports exceeded US$108 million. Should the trend continue, exports of these products should reach the one billion dollar level in the next decade if adequate financing and technologies are made available. To reach these goals, the growth rate would have to increase to 30%. Foreign investment will be essential in reaching the target growth rates. MAIN IDEA: ________________________________________… TYPE OF PARAGRAPH: ___________ Today the Guatemalan apparel industry no longer has to import most of the components for manufacturing. "Full package" apparel production is available from local producers who offer export quality components to the industry. As a result, many service-related producers are joining international associations to certify the quality of their products. Thanks to the on-going consolidation process of the industry, a number of medium-size firms have cut costs and now offer their customers reasonably priced, full-package production. MAIN IDEA: ________________________________ TYPE OF PARAGRAPH: ______________________ II Part. Write the different elements that you can find in the paragraphs. On the average Guatemalan shrimp farms produce two and a half harvests annually, depending on the size of shrimp desired. The Pacific White (Penaeus vannamei) and Pacific Blue (Penaeus stylirostris) varieties of shrimp are the two main species that Guatemalan farms harvest. Although the majority of Guatemala's shrimp production is exported to the United States, there is an increasing trend to export to the European markets spurring further market diversification. From meager beginnings, the country's total annual production has reached the 8 million pound level. Topic Sentence ______________________________ Supporting details ________________________________________… Concluding statement_______________________________… The flower and vegetable sectors are presently receiving the greatest investment, but the potential for further expansion in the tropical fruit sector is in place, in-country, in the Pacific and Caribbean coastal lowlands. Given Guatemala's developed infrastructure and its proximity to major markets, the potential in the agricultural sector is enormous. Ample land for expansion in the vegetable and flower sector is readily available in the central highlands region where high yield, temperate-zone vegetable production areas are just two hours away from Guatemala City. As vegetable and flower exports have expanded, related industries such as wrapping, boxes, freezing plants, and packaging plants, have developed to support these export efforts. Open Question: I have an MS and an MBA - What career shold I pursue to earn a large salary?

I have an undergraduate degree in Physics, a master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, and I am about to graduate from a top MBA program (I do this part time while I work full time as an engineer). I have about 5 years experience in materials engineering, specifically in fuel cells and air conditioning. I currently work in the Hartford, CT area and earn $64k, which I feel is VERY low for someone with my background. My MBA school claims that I should earn well into 6 figures with their degree. I really don't want to be an engineer anymore- I want to go into either Business Development, Business Strategy, Program or Product Management, maybe even Marketing. I've been interviewing at a few places locally, and have been focusing specifically on Leadership Development Programs. Specifically I have looked at the Barnes Group in Bristol, CT and Stanley Black & Decker in New Britain. Their programs sounded awesome, but when they asked me what my salary expectations were and I said over $74k, they basically laughed in my face. I was low-balling it to. So I ask: What type of career, or which companies should I apply to, if I want to make closer to $90k and stay in CT? I'd like to stay close-ish to the Hartford area, but I know I could make more if I moved down to Fairfield or Stamford, so I'll take suggestions there, too. I'm really not all that interested in Finance or Investing. Thank You! more

Open Question: I Have an idea/invention worth millions, but no funds to start, are there any real options?

I have no patent or patent pending. The product is very simple i.e. CAD programer, plastic mold injection, marketing, and my idea. I have done some foot work, I know my product is not pre-existing on the market. I figure, respectively speaking one out of a hundred people that own a car or truck in the world would buy one, not to mention auto repair shop's, auto parts stores, car shows, catalogs or for home. It would cost cents on the doller to mass produce. What should I do ? more

Open Question: Do people buy Apple products because they WANT apple products, or because of the name?

I was having a heated debate... I won't say which side I was on (yet) but essentially the two sides were: "people are willing to spend money on an excellent product because they want that product, which delivers what it promises." and the other side: "People once bought apple for it's qualty, but now you can get something of equal value for a lot less. People buy but they are never pleased, so it can't be their desire for a product that pushes them to spend more, for nothing extra. People will buy anything... so long as it's pushed on them." We were also discussing marketing, and whether it's alive or dead. What do you think?I should add that Apple does not do marketting... that they do indeed create products they think we want. But that also backs up the other argument... because they are never alone for long on the market, and people have other options... so how can the prices remain so high, and people are still willing to buy them, unless for the name? Also, it'd be cool to know if you own one while you answer!I suppose it's time to tell you my position... I was definitly the one saying apple products are only popular because of the name. However, it was a good dicussion... we're definitly going to continue it! more

Open Question: I believe the VP, Joe Biden when he says the summer of recovery continues...?

I guess the gut churning unemployment numbers, huge declines in the stock market, record setting declines in the housing market, continuous drops in the GDP, debt that cannot be paid off by our great great grandchildren and growing by the second, but what I am looking for is that economy saving tax increase. When can we expect that massive government "thank you very much" that will inspire all business's to hire new employee's, inspire consumer spending, enhance our products overseas with that taxed in American cache'? more

Open Question: Does this help with the demand question? i really dont understand any of it..?

Polynomials Polynomials can be used for many different real-world applications. The problems shown below are only some of the possible applications. Application Practice Answer the following questions. 1.In this problem, we analyze the profit found for sales of graphic t-shirts. A demand equation (sometimes called a demand curve) shows how much money people would pay for a product depending on how much of that product is available on the open market. Often, the demand equation is found empirically (through experiment, or market research). a.Suppose a market research company finds that at a price of p = $25, they would sell x = 60 shirts each month. A company’s revenue is the amount of money that comes in from sales, before business costs are subtracted. For a single product, you can find the revenue by multiplying the quantity of the product sold, x, by the demand equation, p. b.Substitute the result you found from part a. into the equation R = xp to find the revenue equation. Provide your answer in simplified form. Show all your work. The costs of doing business for a company can be found by adding fixed costs, such as rent, insurance, and wages, and variable costs, which are the costs to purchase the product you are selling. The portion of the company’s fixed costs allotted to this product is $600, and the supplier’s cost for a shirt is $18 each. Let x represent the number of shirts. c.If b represents a fixed cost, what value would represent b? Show all your work. d.Find the cost equation for the shirt. Write your answer in the form C = mx + b. Show all your work. The profit made from the sale of shirts is found by subtracting the costs from the revenue. e.Find the Profit Equation by substituting your equations for R and C in the equation . Simplify the equation. Show all your work. f.What is the profit made from selling 33 shirts per month? Show all your work. g.What is the profit made from selling 27 shirts each month? Show all your work. h.What is the profit made from selling no shirts each month? Interpret your answer. Show all your work. i.Use trial and error to find the quantity of shirts per month that yields the highest profit. Show all your work. j.How much profit would you earn from the number you found in part i? Show all your work. k.What price would you sell the shirts at to realize this profit? Hint: Use the demand equation from part a. Show all your work. 2.The break even values for a profit model are the values for which you earn $0 in profit. Use the equation you created in question one to solve P = 0, and find your break even values. Show all your work. 3.In 2007, Walmart’s sales were reported at $115,140,000,000 as of August of that year. In 2008, its sales were reported at $123,222,000,000. a.Write Walmart’s 2007 sales and 2008 sales in scientific notation. Show all your work. You can find the percent of growth in Walmart’s sales from 2007 to 2008 by following these steps: •Find the increase in sales from 2007 to 2008. •Find what percent that increase is of the 2007 sales. b.What was the percent growth in Walmart’s sales from 2007 to 2008? Do all your work by using scientific notation. Show all your work. Walmart Reports July 2008. (2008). Resolved Question: I need some advise on removing Packaging tape from lino?

A few years ago I used what I think now is Packaging Tape to line my lino at the edges when painting my kitchen cupboards. When I removed the tape it left the brown of the tape on the lino still. I tried removing it at that time, but it just became way too much for me.. Now we are going to put the house on the market and I want to get rid of it.. The lino is roughly a mottled colour of the browns and greens and it does blend in with it, but I know its there and I want to try and clean it off. i have tried Eucalyptus oil and other household cleaning products, even tried to steam clean it off. But to no avail. Does anyone have any other ideas please (handy ones-not stupid ones- thanks) :) more

Resolved Question: Fashion Advice and is a dress with pleats in the front appropriate for a 30 year old?

My girlfriend and I are going to a friends wedding and she vetoed a dress I had for the wedding. It is a belted tube dress. The bustier is black and the bottom was black and white satin. It has two sewn pleats down the front from White House Black Market. I told her most dresses these days do, and she said that dresses with pleats are for adolescent girls and are a fashion no no. What do people think of this dress? Are pleats for adolescent girls? I put the following dress on hold and I'm thinking of picking it up on Saturday and wearing it with a color shawl: http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=60&pageId=1&productId=570010876&viewAll=true&prd=Double+Drape+Tank+Dress&subCatId=&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=59&catId=cat210002&cat=Dresses++Skirts&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size= Do people like this dress better? Resolved Question: Is freepostcardmarketing.com a scam?

Hello, A while back I got an e-mail for this home based business that says you can sign up for free and you can create money just by mailing postcards. I did sign up, it is free. However, i never tried the system and have been searching to see if i can find any information on it as far as the business being legit or a scam. I can't find nothing. The postcards promotes cellphone applications for people to sign up to make money. That's a very common business and it is by the same company/person who founded this postcard business. You get your own back office where you can review the sales you have made etc. You have to purchase some stamps and a certain kind of postcard for you to print the postcards the company sends to your back office. Once they send it, you have to let them know when you have print it etc so that it can be tracked in your back office. Once again, i have never tried the system. Open Question: Do you think that Apple Inc. is breaking the law with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad?

Now before I begin, let me say that I love Apple products, however Apple seriously limits the functionality with all three of their touch devices. Back in the day, I believe with windows 95 or 98 a lawsuit was filed against Microsoft because it only allowed the Internet Explorer browser on their computers. It was ruled that it was unlawful for that to happen. Is Apple not doing almost the same thing now? You are not allowed to install any software not "approved" by Apple itself, and to do that you must jailbreak your device and "void" your warranty. Apple constantly updates its iOS software to patch "security loopholes" that allows people to jailbreak their devices. But that is aside from the point. If you make a device that is mass produced, don't you have to allow the consumer to install whatever software their heart desires? It seems as if Apple is censoring out any application that it does not like or does not "approve". And along with that, AT&T and Apple are creating a sort of a monopoly with its iPhone exclusivity contract. Apple and AT&T know that the iPhone is just about the most popular phone on the market, and it is understandable to use it as a selling point, but I think that it has gone too far. It would be different if AT&T created its own phone and used it as a selling point and did not allow it onto other carriers, but to pay another company for exclusive rights to its products is a monopolistic move. Do you think what I am saying is true? Leave your answer and feedback. more
