Open Question: What do you think of my writing? Should I have been accepted by Bleacher Report?

I am 15 and submitted this piece to Bleacher Report... They declined it... Forget about weather you agree or disagree with the article, just should I have been accepted? Carl Crawford Suitors With many teams beginning (or already knowing) weather they will be buyers or sellers come July 31st and even November 10th, it is time to begin speculating on what teams will sign who. It is being heavily overshadowed by the NBA right now, but baseball has a very impressive crop of talent going into the free agent market. From Cliff Lee to Carlos Pena, teams will be vying for the little push that's the difference between contending... and rebuilding. This particular article is about one of the biggest free agent question marks, Carl Crawford. There are many (as in all) teams that could use his lefty bat, his .300 average, his 20 home runs, and of course his 60 stolen bases, but only 1 team can come away with him. Tampa Bay Rays As with any free agent, the former team is a good possibility. The player has his home there, he knows his team mates, and in Crawford's case has been there since he was 18 years old. A good chunk of life... Unfortunately for Tampa, baseball is business more now than ever, and Tampa just can't cover what his bill will be. His constant production is worth more than $10 million per year, and Tampa can't afford much more than that. Crawford and his agent will be probably looking in the ballpark of a 6 year - $90 million contract... That would be approximately 20% of the teams payroll! As a comparison Alex Rodriguez is 15% of the Yankees payroll and Albert Pujols is about 16%... That's pretty tough for a young Rays team to do. Not to mention the Rays youth! they have Desmond Jennings just waiting to take over when Crawford leaves. It is sad for Tampa to do, but they must say good bye to Crawford and try their best to keep Carlos Pena. New York Yankees The team that knows most about business in the majors is, as always, the New York Yankees. It seems that since the Rays first executed their 2010 option of Crawford, the Yankees have been the top contender to get him for themselves. Except a problem arose... They have a prospect who's performing in the majors. Brett Gardner wasn't really expected to have to perform too well. Just well enough for the process of the Yankees bringing up good prospects, making them great, and then trading them for solid talent to continue... But he's performing great! It may not seem like it, but even Brian Cashman likes to save money when he can... And when he weighs his options this off season, he can have either Brett Gardner for 1-2 million per year, or Crawford (who is producing similar numbers) for 15 million, I think I know the way he'll go. Atlanta Braves The Braves have been looking for an outfield bat to match with Heyward and McClouth for a while. They were in the Johnny Damon sweepstakes for a while, but ending up 'settling' with Matt Diaz and Melky Cabrera. The Braves will definitely be in a spot to contend for Crawford next year with a payroll at 15th in the majors, but have the Braves ever gone for a major name free agent? I'm researching it, and the biggest name they acquired from free agency is Billy Wagner, the 38 year old that has already blown 3 saves.... In a way, that's a compliment. The Braves don't need to get free agents, they have people in their farm system that get the job done... But in the Crawford sweepstakes it gives them a lower stance. I expect them to sign someone like Johnny Damon in 2011 free agency. Detroit Tigers Then you have the Tigers... The Tigers have a very interesting situation in left field, where Johnny Damon, an overpriced 2010 free agent, is taking most of the starts there. Will the Tigers really get him back for another below average year? I doubt it. It's obvious that neither Carlos Guillen nor Ryan Raburn can provide any defense in left field and if you were to put Brennan Boesch in left and Magglio Ordonez in right, can you really depend on Raburn as a DH? The Tigers are cutting A LOT of money they wasted this year. Johnny Damon's 8 million, Jeremy Bonderman's 12.5 million, and Brandon Inge's 6 million dollar contracts are up and Bonderman and Inge will be resigned for half (or less) of what they made. Magglio Ordonez's ridiculous contract will more than likely vest again for a hideous $15 million, but it is an outfielder you need. When all is said and done with expiring contracts you will have a payroll of about $80 million... Room enough for an extra hitter. Crawford's expected contract would bring the payroll to $95 million. STILL a decrease of almost 40 million dollars from 2010 Opening Day...... Wow. Dave DombroDombrowski and Mike Illitch have shown they aren't afraid to buy the bats (Damon, Cabrera, Ordonez, etc.) and that's what Crawford is. They would instantly become World Series contenders. THE VERDICT: Carl Crawford will be a Detroit Tiger stupid yahoo cut it off. lol more

Open Question: What do you think? Choose an answer.?

Case Scenario 1: Compliance, Inc. Compliance, Inc., (CI) conducts clinical human and animal trials for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Revenues are split evenly between early and late drug development services. In the area of early drug development, CI offerings include analytical, bioanalytical, antibody, clinical pharmacology (Phases I-IIa), toxicology, and drug metabolism services. Late development services include central diagnostics, central lab, clinical development (Phases IIb- IIIa), periapproval (Phases IIIb-IV), and pharmacogenomics. The bulk of its business is conducted in Europe and the U.S. (10 and 17 subsidiaries, respectively); CI also has subsidiaries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Australia. While now an independent public company, CI was once itself a subsidiary of Corning International. Corning built up CI through over 40 acquisitions, hoping to extend its strength in medical testing glassware into the medical services business. At the time Corning made its acquisitions, the clinical testing industry was geographically fragmented, owing largely to the fact that various parts of the world had their own strong local pharmaceutical companies and distinct regulatory environments. Perhaps for that reason Corning, and now CI, has retained the autonomous character of each country's businesses. However, globalization of the regulatory environment (both global and local standards), globalization of the biotechnology firms (increasing the geographic scope of their operations), and tremendous consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry (reducing the number of pharmaceutical industry participants to only a handful of major global companies) is causing CI to question its decentralized strategy. (Refer to Case Scenario 1) What incentives does CI have to use an international strategy? increased market size greater returns on investments in analytical processes competitive advantage through location increased market size, greater returns on investments, and competitive advantage through location Question 2 (Refer to Case Scenario 1) What type of international strategy is CI currently pursuing? multidomestic global transnational regional Question 3 (Based on Case Scenario 1) What type of international strategy should CI pursue? multidomestic global transnational regional Question 4 Case Scenario 2: Jewell Company. Jewell Company (JC) is a $2 billion diversified manufacturer and marketer of simple household items, cookware, and hardware. While JC's 16 different lines of business may appear quite different, they all share the common characteristics of being staple manufactured items and sold primarily through volume retail channels like Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart. Because JC operates each line of business autonomously (separate manufacturing, R&D, and selling responsibilities for each line), it is perhaps best described as pursuing a related linked diversification strategy. The common linkages are both internal (accounting systems, product merchandising skills, and acquisition competency are centralized in the corporate office) and external (distribution channel of volume retailers). Despite this partial centralization of the divisions' operations, each business is run entirely separately. To keep the managers focused on their respective businesses, they are paid a base salary but can earn up to three times that salary in bonuses based on meeting divisional performance targets. An additional, but smaller part of their compensation is derived from stock options. (Refer to Case Scenario 2) What is the corporate structural form used by Jewell? functional structure cooperative M-Form SBU M-Form competitive M-Form Question 5 (Refer to Case Scenario 2) The centralization of Jewell's operations can be described as: centralized at corporate headquarters centralized at country office partially centralized in SBU's or divisions decentralized to divisions Question 6 (Refer to Case Scenario 2) Jewell's divisional incentive compensation can be described as: linked to divisional performance mixed linkage to corporate, SBU, and divisional performance linked to overall corporate profitability linked to Jewell's stock market performance Question 7 Case Scenario 3: The Boys and Girls Club. The Boys and Girls Club (BGC) is a national non-profit organization geared to provide America's youth with the tools and skills they need to become healthy adults, responsible citizens, and effective leaders. By bringing parents, neighbors, educators, and civic leaders together with our youth, BGC believes it can instill these crucial life lessons at an age when they're most needed. The n more

Open Question: How can I make some money by the end of the month? Any fresh ideas?

Thank you for reading my question! I'm 29 years old and I've been unemployed for a month (I was doing seasonal/temp work that suddenly stopped), and no one seems to want to hire me! I'm a very hard worker, so I don't know what gives. It's very frustrating. I might be getting a call-back next week, but my water will be cut off at the end of this month if I don't pay it, so I need to make some cash. Does anyone have some fresh ideas on how to (legally) make some money, or for some shoestring budget businesses I could start? I've been doing research, but haven't found one that looks like it would work. I only have $20 to my name, so it's got to be mega-shoestring. I don't have anything to pawn either, and I don't have a car. So, besides surveys, ebay, craigslist, yard sales, flea markets, dog sitting, baby sitting, blood donations, or anything illegal, does anyone have any good ideas?I don't have a friend network, and everyone I know is broke. I support my lazy mother and my barely part-time worker sister. Not much help there. more

Open Question: Should I migrate to Canada from Dubai or not?

I am a successful Indian expat businessman with 3 running businesses based in Dubai in the transportation, construction and trading sector. These businesses were doing well until recently in the last 1 year when the recession hit the market badly. However, due to the temporary nature and transient nature of Dubai, despite being here for 20 years, I feel maybe I should migrate to Canada and start a new life which is more permanent and less transient and also provides a path to Citizenship. I would appreciate anyone who is currently or has previously lived in Dubai to advice whether migrating to Canada is a wise move and whether or not the opportunities are better there. Would really appreciate the answer to the question as I feel sometimes I have wasted 20 valuable years of my life. more

Open Question: buying salvaged cars?

My best friends father has a shop/business and been buying salavaged cars and fixing them for years. Now I am in the market for another car and was wondering whether it is worth considering buying a salavaged car and fixing it. The only reason I am considering it is because he buys the cars with low miles and only cosmetic work, the chassis has not been damaged with the cars he purchases. I just want some feedback from people that have previously purchased slavaged cars and fixed them and their experiences doing so. I am concerned about if I will get insured because the title will say it was salavaged. more

Open Question: Is this excerpt from my story any good? What should I improve?

Ok, so this is a scene at the beginning of Part 1 of my book... So what should I fix? If you like to read, I am sure you will enjoy it. If you hate reading, read it anyways because you have already read this far. This is supposed to be on the 20th page area of my book, after the start and leading into the whole thing about what's going to be happening. It's a News Report format, so any help on what to improve besides paragraph structure would be helpful. “Thank you Amy.” The pink clad woman said. She blinked at the camera and raised an eyebrow, a plainly disbelieving and sarcastic expression on her face. “We have breaking news. Alfred J. Wasson, of East Kantian drive, who was suspected of seventeen accounts of first degree assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of first degree murder, and one count of forcible entry into a private residence, as well as having been believed to be a high ranking member of a doomsday cult, has been shot dead. It was only hours ago when the Ilium Police Department triangulated the position of his location using cell phone calls he had made to South America, and finally located his exact whereabouts, a small motel room on 4663 Davis Street. He was shot and killed on the scene, with reportedly seven rounds fired by Ilium officers. Open Question: Just received my Bachelors of Science in Computer Science, and having a hard time finding a job.?

I just graduated with a degree in software engineering, I am having some trouble finding leads. I would like to work in the Silicon Valley but the market seems pretty saturated in that area. I have my resume on every job site out there, and I've applied to all the big businesses like Apple, HP, and IBM. Any suggestions? more

Open Question: Use a live/work loft as commercial kitchen?

I'm looking into starting up a business where I sell prepared food at Farmers' Markets. However, in order to get the proper paperwork to sell at the market, it looks like food has to be prepared in a commercial kitchen. Renting a commercial kitchen would be too costly for a start-up so, for the sake of zoning and clearing these requirements, would a live/work loft work qualify as a commercial kitchen? more

Open Question: Is this excerpt from my story any good or should I modify it some?

Ok, so this is a scene at the beginning of Part 1 of my book... So what should I fix? If you like to read, I am sure you will enjoy it. If you hate reading, read it anyways because you have already read this far. Open Question: What products exist that are based on scientific research and not market research?

I would like to attend a university with best practices based on quality education research instead of a stable business model. I would like to shop for health foods that actually are more healthy instead of just better marketed. Example, rice cake treats are more fattening than McDonald's fries. Open Question: Is this a good business idea?

Over the summer, I plan on starting my own online company. I have made my decision on what I will do. It is a website where users can sign up for free, and sellers can list their website and or domain name for sale or auction. A buyer who is interested can purchase the website. The seller can post a snapshot of the website and post other info regarding his/her website. They can place the starting bid and or buy now price. I would make money by selling ad space, and by charging a very small fee for the seller to post his site for sale (this can also help by eliminating scammers trying to sell scam sites since scammers dont want to pay fees to post up a scam). The reason why i think this is a good idea is because people are now starting to "flip" websites (buy a website, fix it up, and sell it for profit. There is no real industry leading website available to buy and sell websites except for sitepoint.com, which does not have their main focus on the marketplace. If I market this site enough bringing targeted customers and visitors, this site could become a success. Since i have very good coding and design knowledge, I can easily create the site. I also have a marketing plan in place. My uncle, who markets sites for a living, thinks this site could have potential and says my marketing plan is perfect. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. Do you think I could make six or more figures a year with this idea? Do you think it could be profitable? Do you think I should do it? Thanks! more

Open Question: Is there any legal way to step up the tax basis of a property to current market value without selling it?

Example: You want to transfer (within the next few years) your home (or its value) to an adult child who does not live in the home. You could sell the house and give the assets to the child. That would allow you to enjoy the capital gains shelter (assume house is worth roughly $200,000). But, that would entail moving to another residence. Can you somehow use a business, trust, etc. and still reap the benefit of the capital gains shelter? Can you create a trust or business and sell the home to the trust or business? Assume you don't want to have the home passed via your will. more

Resolved Question: Is it advisable to put this in my resume?

I'm a nurse by profession, but after a year of graduating, I started my own oxygen-related equipment business. Another year passed and now I'm about to sell the company or close it and sell the equipment due to all the headaches that my meddling investor has caused me. I basically ran the business on my own; I was doing the management, marketing, sales, deliveries, maintenance, and I was also the care-giver and nurse of my clients....the whole 9 yards if I may put it, so I could maximize the profits. So now, I'm planning to take on an ESL job (english as a second language) just to get by. Believe it or not, where I live, I'll earn more doing that job than practicing my profession (sigh). So my question is, does it even make sense to put my past year as a job experience? I mean does it even count? (I taught ESL to fund my college for a while, so it's not like this is my first time to teach). Thanks for the advice and insights you could give =)*My investor was a relative who lives and works in the U.S. *I am actually an R.N. but an ESL teacher in my part of the world earns about two to three times more than any registered nurse. *Life is unfair, but it must go on, therefore I work my butt off just to get by xD more

Resolved Question: I just recently got divorced. My husband left me to sort out the house and do what I want with our stuff...?

I have been going through alot of what we had. I got the house, of course. I do not know what to do with the stuff I know we no longer will use. Its mostly little odds and ends. I thought about a yard sale but that would open the neighbors to knowing my business.I do not do flea markets. I thought it would be a good idea to give some of it to a neighbor I trust and the rest to charity. I figured a few things...I would sell later. Is this a good idea or what should I do with it. Our divorce was a friendly one. more

Resolved Question: Anyone else enjoying the Obama Depression?

The recession killed off 7.9 million jobs. It's increasingly likely that many will never come back. The government jobs report issued Friday shows that businesses have slowed their pace of hiring to a relative trickle. "The job losses during the Great Recession were so off the chart, that even though we've gained about 600,000 private sector jobs back, we've got nearly 8 million jobs to go," said Lakshman Achuthan, managing director of Economic Cycle Research Institute. Excluding temporary Census workers, the economy has added fewer than 100,000 jobs a month this year -- a much faster and stronger jobs recovery than occurred following the last two recessions in 2001 and 1991. But even if that pace of hiring were to double immediately, it would take until 2013 to recapture the lost jobs. And the labor market very likely doesn't have years before it gets hit with the shock of the inevitable next economic downturn. more

Open Question: Grammar: Is the following essay written in a grammatical correct English? Please help me to?

Essay: School uniforms at High Schools --------------------------------------… Nowadays, people often have to think about what they should wear (during the day) and today's fashion market with the daily new brands, that appear on the market every day and creations don't solve these problems either, they rather augment the problems. That makes you think about it; it wouldn't be better to create an universial dress code so that the comparison of people's appearance could stop. Even at our school we were already confronted with that theme in connection with the project "Fair Trade". So in this essay, I'll examine the possibilities of school uniforms. Firstly, you could say that such uniforms look pretty and more formal. As a result, students are aware of the fact that they are going to school like a businessman is wearing his business uniform; he knows that he's on the way to work. So it would be more easy to distinguish leisure time (when you wear casual clothes), from the work hours. However, I have to add that school uniforms often have to be cheap so that everybody can afford them. That could be an advantage in the case you don't recognize somebodies social class. But unfortunately, if you have to make them formal, practical and fashionable all at the same time, there is always one aspect that you can't fulfill. So they shouldn't become too expensive. Due to the fact that they must be cheap, either the cotton isn't (qualitively) goog enough or you can only create one uniform for the whole year. Because of the low price, they often are uncomfortable because the cotton isn't silk; you will always have hot in summer and alway cold in winter. Furthermore, social conflicts should be blocked in that time you are wearing an uniform, which I already mentioned above. With school uniforms, you have fewer social conflicts based on your social status which, as you know, can be recognized on your dress code. Nevertheless, social conflicts aren't completely eliminated and even conflicts could emerge: There a fight between schools could begin because of their different uniforms. Or the pressure for integration in the group could become so strong that the situation could slide down like it happened, for example, in the film "The wave" where the unity of the group members turned against other people... Finally you could say that the integration in a group is very important for the learning process at school and that school uniforms in that case are a huge advantage. In conclusion I have to say that it would be difficult for us having school uniforms in our country too. On the one hand there are a lot of advantages but on the other hand that many disadvantages, for example the fact that they aren't comfortable (which should be the case). So I would say that it isn't important to have such uniforms because the lexis is the same everywhere, with or without a school uniform. more
