Resolved Question: Business Studies GCSE - shop owner questionnaire?
Hi im doing my business studies GCSE's and I have to imagine im setting up a business, I have done some research in to setting up a sweet shop but I need more primary research on some basic business ideas could someone please help me with these questions, thank you
How much of a profit would you roughly recommend making or how much of a loss is normal for the first few months?
What prices are your sweets, on average, priced at?
Is advertising key to the success of the shop?
To fit out an 'empty shell' with shop equipment is it reasonable to say it would cost about £8,000 or is that too low? (or high?)
If theres any other information that you think i may need i would really apreciate it, thanks very much again :)
moreVoting Question: Totally avoid getting in debt?
Hi everyone, id like to describe my current situation which is probably all too familiar to most of you
I come from a lower(working) class family in England. Im a 17 year old guy studying A levels, living with two younger sisters and my parents in a rented house. As with many families in at the moment we are X thousand pounds in debt, im not sure of the exact number and it isn't really important. i see a lot of advertisements on the TV advertising 'get out of debt solutions.' i have to say resorting to one of those campaigns really isn't something i want to do.
i do not plan to earn a lot of money in my life, im focusing instead on Karate and my study of Philosophy, both of which i am very passionate about. to me those to subjects are far more important than making money, however it is clear that most of us will have some money problems at some point, so i ask for any tips you can give me to avoid getting in debt in the first place and owing money to anyone, i don't want to end up in the same situation as so many others.
as it stands at the moment, i try to keep my personal costs as low as possible, i do not own a car, i use public transport and ride a bike-that's a few thousand per year off already. i also rarely eat out, go to expensive social places, i don't drink/smoke/gamble ect for various reasons.
so yeah that's me, apologies for the length but are there any other tips you give me to avoid debt?
thanks in advance

moreResolved Question: I bought a camapervan off ebay, seller lied?
The camper van was advertised as in need of 'a little tlc and a wipe down' due to it been in storage and had 'very low mileage of 20k'.
Firstly it arrived with a window missing, they hadn't checked the latches before letting the courier load it so one went missing in transit, secondly it was rotten all around the back quarters and requires nearly £3000 of repair, a little more than 'TLC', I had to hoover toe nail clippings off the floor, remove personal belongings from the cupboards. The ceiling is soaked and skylight cracked, top bed damp, mattress no good, dash board rusted to window, furnishings damp throughout.
Gets better...
It arrived straight to a garage who put it through MOT fixing various things and was then delivered to me, i then find out its a write off AND in 1997 had 56k mileage on it so must have bee around at least once.
Before I paid for it I spoke to the owner to ask about the mileage and he said he was sure it was genuine because it was his fathers before he had it.
Furthermore they didn't give V5 to courier, they claim to have sent it to me but im not sure as its been 4 working days. I have no way at the moment of looking at dates to work out when they owned it and if it was written off in their possession or if the mileage had been between 56k and 100k in their ownership, what I can say is it came from an area of the country that was badly flooded about 5 years ago and I suspect the write off is flood damage.
Please can I have no 'why didnt you view' comments as this isnt helpful. I read the listing carefully, I called the seller and asked many questions about the condition and mileage, none turned out to be true.
I want what I paid for the vehicle back PLUS the costs of MOT'ing it, and I want it removed form my drive. Is this reasonable? Alternatively i'd accept the difference in the value of the actual vehicle offset against the vehicle they 'illustrated' to me. (around £700)
I realise a private seller has no obligation to tell me its written off but surely they cant say its got 20k low miles and needs TLC when it's really this bad??Didn't pay by paypal, did a deal privately, the seller ended the item at the current price which was about 2/3rds of what i actually paid, i can prove what i paid though, ebay and paypal no good to me on this occasion... If only i had used paypal. I really wish I had despite hating paypal with a vengeance.

moreResolved Question: currently A brothel in Berlin is going green.?
Berlin - Stung by the economic crisis, a brothel in Berlin has leapt on the "green" bandwagon and is offering discounts to clients who can prove they arrived by public transport or bicycle - with some success.
"Everyone's a winner," explained Regina Goetz, a former prostitute who runs the "Maison d'envie" (House of Desire) brothel in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg, a district in the former East Berlin, which is a stronghold for the ecologist Green party.
"The environment is a topic on everyone's lips and it's pretty difficult to park around here. So we came up with the idea of an 'eco discount' of $7.40 to anyone who leaves the car at home," Goetz told AFP.
"The crisis has slashed our turnover in half in the last year," the 56-year-old told AFP over coffee and cakes, flanked by scantily clad prostitutes.
But the green discounts have proved a roaring success and got business back on track, she said.
To qualify for the discount, "clients who come by bike show their helmet or their padlock keys," she said. "Others hand in their ticket or monthly pass if they have come on the bus."
Nice atmosphere
The brothel itself is a model of discretion - only a small brass plaque advertising "the little sexy address" betrays the true purpose of the building, housed in a block with a bike shop, a burger bar and a pub.
Clients pass through a courtyard scattered with rubbish dumps, pushchairs, kids' bikes and buggies before arriving at a corridor where a doormat emblazoned with a red heart indicates the hoped-for destination.
"We have a really nice atmosphere here, the neighbours are great," said one of the prostitutes, a pretty blonde in her 30s with short hair, sporting fishnet tights and sexy red lacy undies under her turquoise dressing-gown.
She said she had already welcomed several customers on the eco tariff, like all her colleagues, about a dozen woman aged between 20 and 45, the majority of whom work part-time.
One of them said she was a nurse secretly moonlighting as a prostitute. Another said she was a dietary counsellor in a gym - "but times are hard". A third said she was a housewife.
As for the clients, they come in all shapes and sizes, from all social classes and all ages, right up to the "doyen", who is 86 years old, said Goetz.
All the employees of the "Maison d'envie" wholeheartedly approve of the eco tariff. "Regina is full of good ideas," said one.
The establishment also offers special "weekend rates" with Jacuzzi options and a "two-for-one" rate.
For Goetz, the brothel is "a business like any other" and prostitution is a legal sector in Germany with around 400 000 employees.
"In these tight times, we are cutting costs. We've binned the tax advisor, reduced the hours of the cleaning lady and I only buy low-cost cleaning products," she said.
And like any other head of industry, she is careful to appear bullish on the sector's prospects.
"In a business like ours, there are always ups and downs. But we want the recovery to come quickly. I check the stock market prices every day," she revealed.

moreResolved Question: What is the current minimum wage in the UK - and is it legal to advertise a job offering less?
I'm job hunting at the mo, and lots of jobs I've seen advertised in local papers and even at the Job Centre offer wages that seem extremely low - e.g; less than £6 per hour. One position I'm interested in applying for states that an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check is required, due to the fact that it involves working with vulnerable people in a residential care home. Fair enough. However, they want the applicant to pay for the check themselves. I don't know how much this would cost, but the ad states that it would be payable in instalments - so I'm guessing it's not going to be cheap! Now, given that the job itself pays only £6.07 per hour, this seems a bit unfair to me.
Is my view a bit naive in today's economic climate - decent jobs being as scarce as they are, etc?
Any advice or pointers would be very welcome.
Thank you.Wow! I've been self employed so long I had no idea the min' wage for employees was so low. Ah well, that explains a lot.
Thanks so much for all answers thus far. Each one has been very helpful.

"Tesco can set up a budget for the entire business as well as for their individual stores to control that their stores do not spend more than Tesco expects. With a budget Tesco will be able to regularly monitor its performance and check that they stick to the budget that they previously set. Budgeting prepare for the future can help Tesco to predict problems and needs that might arise in the future. For example, when a budget of one of Tesco’s stores states that sales are not likely to cover expenses of a particular store, then Tesco may take some actions (introduction of new products, advertising etc.) to improve future performance.
Creating a budget will enable Tesco to get much greater control over the business. Variance is the difference between the budgeted figures and figures that the business has actually achieved. Tesco can benefit for it. For example, as a part of their budget they can set a chart with two columns for each moth (it could be different period). In the first column it can put budgeted figures and in second column actual figures. Compeering budgeted and actual figures will allow them to work out variances that are expressed as percentages. If the result is better the expected, for example costs are lower then expected the business can benefit from it; however when results are worst and variances quite high then management of Tesco can predict some future problems and it give an opportunity to take actions to deal with it."

"All of businesses that want to benefit for international presence must be aware that some government regulations and policies are possibly different. Law in England and will vary and business that is expanding should have good knowledge about low under which they are going to operate in the future. Lack of knowledge could cause serious and expensive problems in the future.
Form my own experience, I know that USA’s law and regulations are different form those in the European Union. For example, three years ago when I was looking for a laptop with high specification, I realized that it is much cheaper to buy a laptop from one of the biggest online retailer which was located in USA. If you buy a product from outside the Europium Union particular product is shipped to you and you have to remember about additional costs, such as: taxes which depend on what US state the seller is in. The selling price which was stated on the webpage was very attractive and unfortunate it didn’t include additional costs. Finally, when I nearly purchased the laptop I discovered that I needed to spend some extra money on tax purposes.
Each business which operates internationally must remember that a potential customer may feel cheated if he or she will find out after purchasing that it is necessary to add $150 to selling price of $500 for tax purposes and shipping purposes. All businesses which distribute their products to audience in different countries should remember to inform them about additional costs.
The business which wants to expand also should be aware that some foreign languages are completely different, for example Arabic is read form right to left. Some advertising slogan could be difficult to translate. Even when it can be translated it could be difficult to understand for foreigners and the advert will be not as effectible as it was on home market. There are many examples of translations that went disastrously wrong. For example, when translated into Chinese, the KFC slogan "finger-lickin' good" came out as "eat your fingers off". In some countries, some types of adverts are not allowed to be shown in public and as I mentioned before is this task some adverts can by taken as offensive because of cultural differences, different priorities in life or different sense of humour.
The owner of the business that want to expand and operate in different countries must have specific knowledge about foreign culture and markets because a cultural difference can have a big impact on the way how business is operating, A lack of knowledge can be expensive and can cause many future problems. In different countries there may be some restrictions on what can be shown and what cannot.
The owner of the business must make sure that he or she has a good knowledge about the culture and the market where the new business will be operating and run the marketing campaign."No, it wouldn't that be cheating. I wrote everything in by myself and i just need to correct my errors :(

moreResolved Question: Sources of Student income?
Okay here's things.
I'm at college full time (although its only 14 hours a week) so I'm not eligible for job-seekers even though I fit the hour requirements. The college says it's a full time course so the government just doesn't care because it's not listed as part time.
Due to my age and circumstances the student loan company require information on my parents income even though I've told them I moved out and haven't even spoken to them regularly since I was 16. From them I get a measly £64 a month which barely covers travel costs because of this.
The college won't give a bursary because I'm on a HN course, and their funding for low income students is only available to those in employment. Backwards I know, help for those that have yet none for those that don't.
Because of the way the hours are spread out over the week it has made finding a job to fit around next to impossible. Especially with the current situation with the economy, on average I find just 1 job advertised every few weeks that would even fit around the hours I have at college.
So basically, is there any options for income available to me besides those mentioned above? It's not like I'm being picky, hell I've applied for a job mopping floors but this is starting to get beyond a joke.
This is in Scotland, since I know thing's are done differently here from England and Wales.

Identifying product Development Opportunities
Online appearance may be used to gather, record and analyse data about customers. It helps to discover what people need or want. This allows a business to have better knowledge of their customers, market and makes possible the successful development of new services or products.
Many businesses use their website to gather information about their customers and their wants. For example Pc world uses online feedback form to gather information about customer perceptions of their products, prices and services.
The English language school may use online research methods to help the business to make better decisions about marketing and development of new products/services. The internet also enables the English language school to offer digital delivery of new information. The language school may use newsletter. It is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers which is delivered electronically via email. Newsletter helps to keep customers updated on the new important information which they may be interested in."
"Market Development and costs
Many businesses use its website to appear on other markets. It is relatively cheap comparing to advertising in media and allows a business to expand into new markets without huge costs. Cost of setting up a website depends from type and size of the website. The business will need to choose between building its website itself or hiring web designers. Using a web designer can be expensive, but they have a better knowledge of what works on the web and build a more effective and more safety websites using the latest techniques. A website can break down geographical barriers and create new ways of communication. The Internet gives smaller businesses a relatively low cost strategy for competing on the same online terms as much larger competitors. Using a web appearance helps to reach into a new areas which may not normally be able to reach because of limited capital and expand markets more cost-effectively.
Often using web designer or web design agency mean that the business can use existing connections to secure payments system which is very important for businesses like English language school because most of people are concerned about payment security. A web presents will help the English language school to became available for everyone."Alphabeat No.1 fan it doesn't take long...

moreResolved Question: mobwars without facebook ? (banned for no reason!)?
Can mobwars be played anywhere else other than facebook ? What about apps like social me etc ?
I am one of those people who got banned for using it too much, making too many friends, sending too many emails to friends, then got banned for uploading nude pics (which I didn't) then got banned just for playing mobwars!!
Sick and tired of FB having some good apps and you only being able to use them when you are signed up with the site. Pointless signing up again to play games and then get banned!
Find facebook rather annoying when the innocent people get banned for no reason at all. Looking around it seems to happen rather a lot!
I think for what they banned me over they should actually ban around 95% of the people on there also too keep things fair!
I tried emailing them, but they wont let me back on "it's final" so no chance of reasoning with the idiots even. Clearly only interested in banning people for whatever reason they feel like on the day.
True for emailing *maybe* classed as spam, but making friends or emailing *too much* which isn't even started what "too much" actually is, then if you actually plan to make friends or keep in touch with people, or just to emal, considering its a social network where you get banned for actually "being social" it makes the site unusable.
Be warned to all the girls which upload shots even in low cut tops, apparently anything "sexually suggestive" will get you a ban, no matter what! considering a fair amount of girls on there seem to "flash their stuff" then by rights they all should be banned also. I even asked facebook right out about it and they never replied.
So facebook is fine when you are just telling them all about you, so they can collect all your info, but actually using the site ? well mightaswell forget it. I was happy just to play mobwars at night, but even doing that is "too much".
Actually feel like signing up again and reporting all those "sexually suggestive" pics that everyone has! OH well, one thing to get banned, but when its outright uncalled for and unfair, well thats FB it seems!
Even asked if I could have a copy of my friends list as I had a lot of friends I keep in touch with on there, no reply to that either. So clear that FB do not give a stuff whatsoever about any sort of customer support.
So thanks to facebook, i lost my friends, spent ages playing games which I can no longer play, got banned for actually using the site no matter how little.
Also all the mums which upload pics of their kids, hmmm! ban all them too, young kids, babies plastered all over the site! Girls stuff hanging out, ban all them too, ban anyone who makes too many friends, band anyone who sends more than a few emails a day, ban for poking, you name it! If they can ban me then by rights they should probably ban everyone on the site over similar things.
Even more pathetic I was advertising my company on there which was costing me. So not only do they not care about making money, they also ruin my online adverts on there. So no reply to keeping my adverts on there or allowing access.
Even started my own book group on there aswell!
Facebook = The social network which bans you for being social! Thats how pathetic it is!
I suspect near everyone on the site has "unsutable content" in one form or another. So what are FB going to do ? just keep banning people as fast as they sign up ?
Normally these things wouldn't really bother me, but when its outright unfair and "no trial" and just pull the plug and thats it even though its outrigth unfair, thats when things annoy me. If I was actually spamming people or uploading nude pics then I could really expect a ban!
I see this kind of thing has been going on for a while now. I suspect at this rate everyone will be banned off FB over the next year!
I think they thought I was spamming as I sent so many emails a day, poked a lot of ppl, sent a lot of kisses to the gf, that was about it really! BANNED! Though they did let me back on after a few weeks if I didn't "use the site so much". Though lasted a week and got banned again and not allowed back on for uploading "sexually suggestive" pics. Like I said FB littered with them anyway!
Could mean anything, a mother kissing her baby, geeze, child porn!!! Girls bending over in low cut tops, "sexually suggestive" how many girls do that on FB ? this is why I am so annoyed.
I got warnings like 10 times saying I had uploaded "sexually suggestive pics". Sure I would have removed them, but your not even given that chance! I find it totally unfair. I was asleep when the warnings came though, went I went online in the morning that was it. Not allowed back on. As they do not "give any limits" either its pathetic, "make it up as they go along" kind of deal!

I'm looking for new ideas to help market and promote my business and website.
I asked a similar question the other day and was given a great list of ideas. Most of which dont seem to apply to my business. Those that were left on the list I have done.
I have a BT advertising space, a yahoo and facebook group. I reply to threads and questions related to my business. I have also decided to try out yahoo adwords for a little while.
I have very little almost no more funds for advertising due to advertising in bridal mags and them being both expensive and pointless. So any ideas or opinions would be much appreciated.
I am not looking for a magic wand! lol
I'm looking for more ideas. I have alot of time. I'm trying to find more 'cost effective' ways to promote my business. After spending far too much money on advertising with magazines to get no response I have very low funds. But then it all depends on the ideas and advice that come forward. I may be able to find a way to streach to something. But after being stung with the magazine advertising i'm airing on the side of caution.

I would like it to be an irish ad website or an ads website that gives you the option of what country you want to post the ad in.
You might not understand what I am saying.
For example an Irish person would go onto the international gateway for this site and then click a link that would take them to the Irish gateway of the same site.
This is the best I can explain it.
10 points for best answer. All answers will be read no matter how short or how long.
Thanks in advanceDon't know why people are slagging the Irish.
I don't see America holding a big parade for one of your saints oh and when was the last time that the most popular band in the world
(U2 and don't say they aren't)was from your country??
The former James Bond(Pierce Brosnan) is from Ireland.
They are just some of the great start we have had.
Oh and not to mention we won the Eurovison seven times(more than any other country ever).
moreResolved Question: Do you morally agree with the minimum wage?
Do you know it is a way for employers to keep wages LOW?
Foreigners think it's great as it is well above what they are used to, but what does it do for British People? Takes jobs away from them, and demoralises them.
The minimum wage is disproportionate to the rate of inflation and the cost of living. It keeps people on the breadline. Base wage.
So , MORALLY, is the Minimum Wage right or wrong. This is a Labour policy and most jobs advertised as "miminum wage" go to immigrants , who think cleaning toilets , or sweeping roads and labouring for 10 hours a day in freezing weather is worth £5.52 an hour.
Would you do it? For £5.52 an hour - BEFORE tax?Yankbuster. British People ARE living in poverty . There isn't enough money to go around with all these immigrants we are subsidising. 1 in 4 British KIDS live in poverty. So go change that Y to a W. thanks.

moreResolved Question: How much does local radio advertising cost?
Hiya,
I know that the cost of advertising on the radio will depend on the length of the advert, the time of day it gets played, how many times it gets played a day, etc. But please could someone give me a ballpark figure - are we talking low hundreds, hundreds, thousands? (In British sterling please!) Tried contacting a local radio station, but they wouldn't give any price...they want to meet up and give me the sales pitch! Please, just a ballpark figure! Thanks.

moreResolved Question: Whats the best strategy to winning a reverse auction?
I work for a large retailer and they're running a reverse auction, one of those competitions where the person who texts in with the lowest unique bid wins. The prize is quite valuable - a PS3 value £500.
It costs £1 an entry and I wouldnt normally look twice at one of these competitions, however, since this is advertised on on a staff room poster wall and not in a national newspaper I figure that the number of people who are going to enter is much lower and my chances of winning much much higher.
I have already bidded £0.70p and have recieved a message telling me that my bid is unique but not the lowest. I am waiting untill the competion is nearer the end and I am asking for any advice anyone has.
