Open Question: Is advertising a hoax? To what degree do ad expenditures drive sales? Answers supported by...?
...quantitative data preferred. This Q was prompted by 1 of AgentO's good Qs.Answer any 2 or 3 of my numerous Qs.It seems that traditional TV advertising doesn't always work; or, at least it doesn't work in the ways that product manufacturers intend. How can ads work if people mute them, switch channels, or don't remember product/brand tie-ins? I wonder if a lot of businesses are being duped. Is the supposed correlation between ad expenditure and sales really a myth? Is it a hoax perpetuated by the advertising and broadcasting industries? Why do corporations spend mega-millions on advertising if it doesn't work? What would happen if corporations curtailed ad spending--at least during this economic crisis? When I was in business school, in a prehistoric era, I vaguely recall reading journal articles demonstrating the ad spend to sales correlation. But that was long ago, long before the Internet.Anybody have more up-to-date quantitative data to defend the role of advertising?

moreVoting Question: Resume and Cover Letter Writing - Technical Terms Thank Can Be Mistaken For Typographical Errors?
Hi,
I am a recent college graduate who after a year of post graduate internet enteprenuerhip am having to look elsewhere to for income due to a lack of sales and advertising revenue. My internet ventures were also my first job and I am now looking to include my year of web development and database design experience in my resume and cover letters.
I have hit snag in adding some technical names referring to specific development tools. This is because some of these names when spelled correctly (ex: "OpenSocial") can appear to the untrained eye as a typographical error (ex: they think "OpenSocial" should by "Open Social"). This is not huge concern of mine if the reader is qualified to evaluate these technical aspects, but I fear it could be a disaster if sent to the human resources department of a large company.
My fear comes from the typical skill set of people who work in human resources. Their resume's (ex: http://www.bestsampleresume.com/sample-human-resources-resume/sample-human-resources-resume-1.html) typically do not include the necessary technical experience to know what some terms even mean let alone if they are spelled correctly. Take a look at the following :
- OpenSocial API
- JavaScript
- ObjectDataSource
To the untrained eye this could look like four typographical errors occurred due to missing spaces when in fact it is an error free list of useful skills. The first being a way to promote products by creating embeddable devices using a standard format supported by most social networking sites, the second being a scripting language commonly used to improve user interfaces, and the third being a way to restrict access for different sections of a database to authorized people.
How should I structure the technical names on my resume that consist of two or more words combined with capital letters in the middle?

moreResolved Question: Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay?
Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay in the respects of grammar, the accuracy of vocabulary, coherence, logistic and so on?
The topic is: The media, especially advertisements, show too much information about snacks and toys to children and should be banned. What do you think of this view?
You should finish the essay within 45 minutes and no less than 250 words.
My essay is:
As the widespread of advertisements for snacks and toys, children in current society are unavoidably affected by the over-loaded information showed by TV or other types of media towards children. However, in terms of banning the advertising of children’s products, it would be kind of unreasonable.
Advertisements can afford parents an approach to acquire sufficient information about new types of snacks and toys. In contemporary society, thanks to the development of science and technology, there are a vast number of innovations in the filed of children’s goods, which can promote snacks being attractive combined with nutritious, and make for toys being aids to tap offspring’s intellectual resources. Viewing this situation, broadcasting of these products via TV, the Internet advertising or posters, could be the most effective way to help parents learn and understand those new kinds of commodity. From this respect, advertising of snacks and toys is justified.
Furthermore, advertisements can bring about benefits not only to customers but also to manufacturers. It is a universal that the greater publicity, the higher sales. Better yet, apparently, if producers make significant profits, huge funding support would be allocated in the investigation of new skills which could contribute to enhance the level of security, function and quality of snacks and toys. This could eventually lead to a win-win status for both parents and sellers.
Admittedly, it is the truth that the prevalent advertisements may mislead the youths to over-consume, because youngsters usually lack the capacity of controlling their consuming desire. On the other hand, fortunately, common situation is guardians, rather than adolescents themselves, could make the decision whether or when a product should be purchased. So, forbidding publicizing children’s goods for this reason is pointless.
In conclusion, although there are some drawbacks brought by advertising snacks and toys, in view of the remarkable advantages of it, banning to show advertisements via media would be the last measurements adopted by authorities.

moreResolved Question: Question about those used car sale events?
Have you seen those ads about used auto car events? You know they advertise that they will be in a mall parking lot, or inside your local event center? They are usually aired on TV. Well in my local town we usually have these events by the same auto dealerships in our local expo center. What they claim is that $99 will be your down payment and $99 will be your monthly payment etc. Do you think they can work with people with little or not credit? Because I need a new car and I really am not picky about the age or anything. I am 19 and I barely started working again last month, and I have two good paying jobs. So what are my chances on getting in on these special financing deals they talk about? You know $99 down and $99 per month.
I have some money for a cheap car but I suppose I should try my luck there and build my credit since I only have internet and cell phone in my name. Any advice or warnings?
Thank you.
moreResolved Question: Is Ebay trying to get its Store Owners to Pay for Their Own Advertising?
I have a store on ebay and am extremely frustrated from being bombarded with ads and phone calls from company reps trying to get me to pay them to advertise my ebay store. I cannot work on my store without having to look at these ads. Yes, I also receive phone calls at my home.
I pay $15.95/mo to have an ebay store. I pay .03 or .05 for every item I list every month. Ebay takes 12% of my sales. Ebay is advertising my store's items less and less. I used to sell several items a day. Now, sometimes I go for up to 14 days with no sales. It is getting worse and worse. Why would anyone pay to advertise their ebay store? You would basically be paying for ebay to take your money, along with all the money they get for advertising, when compeitiors' add pop up around yours. These ads are usually big business with better deals than I can afford to offer. This often makes me feel like I am there to be used as bait for drawing the buyers to the big guys!
I think this is prime time for people who design websites and are knowledgeable about internet advertising to get in there and help out the Small Store Owner on Ebay who is fighting a losing battle. I could see a win-win situation if storeowners' had a place to go & for site designers who needed work.
Any comments would be appreciated.
moreResolved Question: Scratch Off Game Strategies?
First, all lotteries are guaranteed money loser over the long run, medium run and even over reasonable short runs, that much is a given but it does appear that unlike the lucky number astrology stuff of the draw lotteries, there's some actual possibilities for strategizing with scratch off games so I was wondering what strategies would work best.
Unlike the odds of a draw lottery, the odds of scratch off games change as tickets are sold. Lottery authorities often publish the number of tickets printed, the number of prizes in each category printed and the number of prizes in each category claimed to date on a daily basis, Texas does so in the form of a CSV file for download. They obviously don't have a way of collecting the number of sales to date as the tickets are bearer instruments and not sold through a computer terminal but a reasonable estimate of the number of tickets sold and hence the number of tickets remaining by using the total number of prizes claimed versus the total number of prizes printed as the ratio of tickets sold. This means that scratch off games can be timed, with tickets purchased when the odds are in your favor or at least less against you. But what do you decide upon, expectations? (That's when the probability of each prize level is multiplied with the value of the prize and then summed up over all the prizes and is a common Engineering technique for estimating returns on investments). The problem with expectations is that they require a lot of statistically independent chances before they average out if the probabilities are low hence you would literally have to play millions of dollars before the winnings play out as expected. Do you look for games with more prizes? more low value prizes? more high value prizes? underclaimed high value prizes? Probabilities of winning at least one prize of a certain value or higher?
Using the ratio of prizes claimed to prizes printed to estimate the number of tickets sold would be able to detect if given prize categories had been under claimed or over claimed when compared to the mean and the higher value prizes would show the most dramatic variation in odds. For example, the "Super Set For Life" game in Texas is currently 89% sold based on the ratio of prizes claimed versus prizes printed but only 3 out the 4 top prizes have been claimed which equates to 75% of that prize category. Another interesting aspect of that game is that if you took the full value of the top prize which is $500,000 a year for 15 years or 7.5 million, then the expectations show a $1.01 return on $1.00 invested. Of course, the prize is actually an annuity probably worth only 63% of the total advertised value which equates with a $0.85 return on the dollar but this is much better then the original $0.68 on the dollar expectation when the game was first printed. This would seem to indicate that if you could corral all the remaining unsold tickets together and just buy them one at a time until you've won the big prize hopefully by about the half way point, you might make money. Of course, you would have to buy 724,059 tickets before being 95% certain of obtaining that last 7.5 million dollar top prize but you would have a 50/50 chance at 381,084 tickets which would be closer to the median of what you would have to buy. Of course, the top prize alone would not meet the 7.6 million dollar median that you would expect to require to obtain the top prize but together with all the smaller prizes, perhaps. Mind you, your scratching arm would be very very tired.
On the Internet, there seems to be a lot of people espousing attempting to exploit manufacturing processes such as purchasing tickets at the end of the roll or changing rolls once a certain amount of prizes has been won. The former seems somewhat suspect since it's nothing for a computer to randomize the prize placement throughout a typical roll of 50 or 25 tickets at the point of printing but the latter is interesting since there is a guarantee of minimum prize amount per roll that's published to assure retailers they are not getting rolls completely devoid of prizes and it's likely that this would be achieved by evenly dividing low tiered prizes between the rolls and then randomizing their positions within the roll. Having said that, since I have scanned images of my winning tickets, I can see that my winning tickets have all been in the first quarter or the last quarter of a roll and none of them has been in the middle half but then I can hardly afford enough tickets to have a statistically relevant sample. Maybe if you have sufficient records to determine where in the roll your winning tickets were, you could email them to me so that we could get a reasonably relevant sample (I'd only be interested in Texas games for the time being).
So what strategies do you think might marginally improve your odds of winning? Aside from not playing at all.Duh, I said these were astronomical odds and improving them marginally still leaves them astronomical. I just wanted to hear some strategies that people use. It's somewhat simple minded to just be saying that lotteries are bad odds, most gambling is and that's a given.

Logical Sells
People usually watch TV, internet or magazine commercials without paying a lot of attention to what strategies are used there. One of the most often used techniques is ‘Logos’, which is originally a greek word meaning ‘word’ or ‘reason.’ Commercials with the logos strategy use some concrete data to make the content of the advertisement persuasive. Here are a couple of examples. In the commercial of ZOTRIM, such words as “This is 100% natural!” and “10million people are using this!” are heard. ‘100%’ gives out an impression of something perfect, while ’10 million’ as the number of actual users impresses the audience that it is such a popular, standard or effective product. In the commercial of DHC Skin Care Lotion, two girls say, “This is a No.1 sales product in the world!” and introduce some voices of successful users. Audience are tempted into a belief that they can be one of such users. In order to make the commercial sound persuasive logically, product makers emphasize perfect-looking concrete figures of data, such as contents of materials, the large number of the actual users, the splendid ranking of the product in the same kind of products or happy voices of successful users. When the audience find the commercial so rational, logical and scientifically proven, they cannot find any reason that they do not buy the product, which is the very intentionally aimed result by the product companies. “This is good” does not sound persuasive enough, but if “How good it is, and why” are shoen with concrete figures, most audience tend to accept it. Appealing the logical judgement of audience works very well, and that is called ‘Logos’ in the techniques of advertising.>>Mr. Luke

So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully!
So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam!

moreResolved Question: Shady car dealer or not?
One week ago I purchased a car from an auto dealer 3 hours away from me. I drove to the dealership to drive the car and have it inspected. The dealership and I agreed on a price. I am paying in cash and needed to move some money around, so they took $500 from me to hold the car and asked me to write a check for the remainder of what I owe on it, and then as soon as I receive the money that's getting moved around I will call them to drop the check and the deal will be done and I will then pick up the car.
Here's the thing that's bugging me.....I found the car on the internet. I found it on a popular car website and it was also on the dealership's website. Even though I have supposedly purchased this car and signed all the paperwork, why are they still advertising it? I had a friend of mine email the dealership under her name and ask if the car was still available, and they told her it was. They even offered to let her test drive it. And this is all after I have supposedly bought it.
Now I understand that they do not actually have the money in their hands yet; they only have $500 down from me. But the sales guy told me that would take it off the market. I actually understand their point of view if they want to wait to have all the money in their hands; what I DO NOT like is being bulls***ed and told that the car is off the market when they are still marketing it. Is this shady,or is this something all auto dealers do? I did extensive research on this dealership, and they are pretty reputable. This is not some bad neighborhood, buy here-pay here type of place.LOL! Just read first response. Didn't know that; this is the reason I posted on Yahoo Answers. Okay, good. Sounds reassuring.
P.S. Haven't smoked weed in 15 years. It's age and bad experiences that make me paranoid, not drugs! LOL :)

I recently passed my state exam for the real estate sales in state of CT. I found a Broker about 15 minutes away from my house. Anyhow, I met with her on Saturday and she said I should have spoken to a Broker first prior to taking the exam. We talked about the pros and cons of becoming a sales agent. With her, she does a 60/40 split on commission where she retains 60% as the Broker. Then she started talking about fees. I thought, here it comes ! She charges her agents $44 per month for MLS access, plus $30 for internet access and $45 for what she calls "Association Fee" which is for monthly admin and advertising fees. Then she dropped a bomb on me, she said she would want 6 months of them fees upfront at time of starting. But in addition, she said as a Sales Agent I must list / sell a minimum of two listings per month beginning my first month; if I don't then she has the right to dissolve the broker / agent relationship and I lose my money. Is this legal ? Do most Brokers do this ?

moreResolved Question: What is the "invoice price" and how does Internet car buying from a dealership work?
This is a two part question.
1. We are looking to buy a 2010 Subaru Forester. The dealership (which received great customer service ratings on independent websites and we felt very comfortable when visiting - no pressure) has certain Foresters advertised on their websites at an internet price that - even after adding on the destination charge - is still about $200 below invoice. If the "invoice" price is what dealerships pay for the cars then how do they make money on this sale? Or is the invoice price something else? (and yes, they listed all the options and so I was able to compare apples to apples).
2. How does buying a car from a dealership over the internet work? Is it basically a committment to buy the car that's done on the internet, but then don't you have to go in in person to do the financing/payment and pick up the car? Or does everything get done electronically and the car gets delivered to you locally? I've only ever bought from a car lot before, so I am not clear on how buying that car from the dealership's internet site would work.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
I am selling my car to a Nigerian man for £400. He is coming all the way from London to Manchester by bus to buy the car. He will be paying me in cash. I was just wondering whether there is any sort of scam involved because I had a call from six different Nigerian people within one day of advertising it for sale on the internet. There were no other people that called. It just seems suspicious.

moreVoting Question: how can a young teen make money...?
Okay, please listen and don't criticize. I am 13 years old and I am looking for a way to make money. Now, I bet all of you are gonna say 'Kids can't get money, you're too young' or 'how about a lemonade stand? or a dog walker?' well in my neighborhood, that stuff doesn't work. I can't get a job anywhere because i'm too young. There's no one who needs babysitters or dog walkers or lawn mowers or snow shovelers or anything like that. People won't buy from a lemonade stand or a garage sale. I'm afraid of doing those online survey things because I know all about internet scams and that. Some of you might tell me about cashcrate or kidzeyes but I don't feel safe doing that. Also, I was thinking about selling on ebay but I have no idea what to sell. And if I start like an online business what do i sell? How do I start a business? How do I get a website? How do I advertise it? How do I make the money? PLEASEEE HELP!
THANKS! =]]]

I'm 16 years old and I am looking into restoring a car. I prefer it to be some model before the crap of the 1980s, but I don't want to restore something built after 1990, leaving me a window from about 1965 - 1982. moreResolved Question: should Fox News be criticized for being an obviously conservative news outlet when it has a large viewership?
With an almost unlimited amount of news sources on TV, radio, print and especially, the Internet, does it really matter if a news outlet deliberately slants their news coverage towards conservatism or liberalism? For example, should Fox News be criticized for being an obviously conservative news outlet when it has a large viewership which generates a considerable amount of revenue in the form of advertising sales time for its parent company? Or should it be applauded for creating a successful business model that identified a specific target demographic (e.g. conservatives), customized a product that fit that group's particular needs and wants and then reaped the benefits in terms of a solidly loyal viewership? Be sure to use examples to support your key points.

moreResolved Question: Applying for a job that requires a degree without a degree.?
I have been in advertising sales for 13 years. I started in the business after dropping out of college once I realized I was pursuing the wrong degree. I was majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Biology, after completing my junior year internship, I knew I wasn't a Chemist.
So after some sole searching I applied for a got a job as an advertising sales executive. I've been doing it ever since.
I've been very successful, I have a proven track record and excellent references. Most of the positions that I have held in the past have required a bachelors degree, however in the past I have been scouted and offered the position.
In this current economy I need to switch industries, I've been selling newspaper ads, specializing in auto ads and right now the newspaper industry and the auto industry are struggling so I've been seeking a job in another form of advertising like TV or internet. Most of the jobs available state degree required. Am I wasting my time sending in my resume or does my 13 years in advertising sales experience compensate for the lack of a degree?
I have considered finishing my degree, but most job postings state "related" degree required. Chemistry is in no way related to my current interest or experience, and it would take too long to pursue a new major.
Thank you in advance.

•iPods Notes
•iPod is the brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. and launched on October 23, 2001.
•Apple has lauched four verisons, shuffle, nano, classic, and touch
•Apple's iTunes software can be used to transfer music to the iPod
•As of September 2008, more than 173,000,000 iPods had been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling digital audio player in history
•History
•The iPods line came from Apple's "digital hub" category, when the company began creating software for the growing market of personal digital devices. Digital cameras, video cameras and organizers had been selling on mainstream markets, but the company found existing digital music players big and clunky or small and useless
•The name iPod was brought to the table by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who was called by Apple to figure out how to get the word out about iPods. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceshipApple researched the trademark and found that it was already in use. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had originally listed an "iPod" trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2000 for Internet information The first iPod kiosks had been demonstrated to the public in New Jersey in March 1998, and commercial use began in January 2000, but had apparently been discontinued by 2001. The trademark was registered by the USPTO in November 2003, and Grasso assigned it to Apple Computer, Inc. in 2005.

•Most everyone who uses or has an ipod uses iTunes for all their music needs. You can download itunes for free off the internet. •Some downsides to iPods are battery issues, reliability, and durability. The advertised battery life on most models is different from the real-world. Most iPods were advertised with a 14-hour battery. A MP3.com put out and article saying that it was vitually impossible. In 2003, lawsuits were charged against Apple, complaining that the batteries lasted for shorter lengths of time than said and that the batteries slowy lost power over time and decreasing the battery life even more. The lawsuit was setteled and for people who were involved got $50 store credit, or battery change. iPods have been criticized for their short life-span and fragile hard drives, It concluded that some models were more durable than others.
