Let's face it, people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity get paid to whip people into a frenzy. They have 2 or 3 hour talks shows that they must fill up by talking about something every day. They must constantly come up with new things to talk about (i.e. new problems to solve). The only way to get people to listen is to say outlandish things and to get people riled up about supposed 'outrages' that are happening. The best way to do that is to create a bogey man, blow the whole thing out of proportion, and convince people that it is worth worrying about. If they didn't do these things they wouldn't get the ratings or get the big advertisers. They have to generate controversy in order to keep the money coming in. And in order to keep up the charade up, they must silence any opposition that calls in. Have you ever noticed that people with a contrary opinion can never get a word in edge-wise? They are talked over, yelled at, berated and then hung up on, usually followed by a condescending remark about how that person is clueless or an idiot. Of course, that person cannot defend themselves after the fact. The magician has total control over his act. For the record, I've never called in to one of these shows. It's just observation. It would be better if politics and entertainment remained separate. moreOpen Question: Strategies to promoting yourself as an Illustrator/Artist?
Okay, so I graduated in Illustration back in July 09, and yet I've only had like 2 commissions (given to me from close friends) ... those projects were'nt even worth the money because I've spent it all already (about 2 weeks pay) similarly in the real world ... How else can I promote myself to clients and the market ? I mean its weird because even though my market is probably likely to be magazines, publishers, councils, advertisers etc - I'm probably just going to be one of THOUSANDS of other graduates who are spamming these potential companies' Inboxes with portfolio links, cover letters etc. So how exactly can I market myself without simply looking like the rest of these graduate artists ? Also, I HATE networking ... honestly, I just dont see the point of it - Like what exactly is the point in mingling with "fellow artists" when I KNOW we're all competing for clients and work ?? Believe me I've done this before and everyone just seems so fake like we have to keep constantly critiquing each other aimlessly. The art community here in the UK is a joke ... moreOpen Question: Do you think that advertisers pay to be on the "Trending Topics" section on youtube?

ex: a business has a commercial where the advertiser has tons of kids in the commercial looking happy. The advertiser says I love kids. It is a popular commercial in the city. But the person who has the understanding/perception problem says I wonder why that advertiser hates kids. And how many SHOULD pull out?His comments do two things. First, they criticize the reaction to Haiti, saying that Obama is moving too quickly to help Haiti compared to the reaction to the underwear bomber. Second, Limibaugh is trying to convince people that Obama is using the disaster in Haiti to gain standing with black people in the U.S. Both are sickening. We are sending help because help needs to be sent. To think there is any other motive is perverted.Gone Galt: I have already sent more money than I can really spare to the Red Cross to help in Haiti. Hi, all you animal lovers! This is pretty simple... Please ask ten friends to each ask a further ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/ Help spread the word, copy and paste this to your email, send this to your friends. Here's the prompt: "Advertisers frequently use the testimony of a celebrity to support a claim: a football star touts a deodorant soap, an actress starts every day with Brand A coffee, a tennis pro gets stamina from Brand X cereal, a talk-show host drives a certain kind of car. The audience is expected to transfer approval of the celebrity of the product. This kind of marketing is misleading and insults the intelligence of the audience. Am I going to buy the newest SUV because an attractive talk-show host gets paid to pretend he drives one? I don't think so. We should boycott this kind of advertising and legislate rules and guidelines for advertisers." I do not agree with the narrator. The only reason i came up with so far was it is subconsciously done. People find themselves in situations buying or doing things b/c they see someone else do it. What other reasons are there? moreOpen Question: could somebody tell me key for this short article?
hi i am English student and i want make summary in 50 words and give the thesis in one sentence could somebody give me key for it Hyundai tells us that their cars make sense, Apple Computer offers us the power to be our best, and most of us don't believe a word of it. The fact is, when all is said and done, most people don't believe, don't remember, don't even notice, most advertising. This has always been so and always will be so. The vast majority of advertising is ineffective and inefficient. And yet, there is a direct connection between a society's (or individual's) levels of exposure to advertising and the levels of consumption. How can this be? If advertising is inefficient, if 90 percent of all advertising is neither seen nor remembered by most people (according to surveys), if two minutes after being exposed to a particular message or brand I can no longer remember either the brand or the message, then where's the connection? How does something so banal and benign impact my consumption patterns and habits? The message cited above for Hyundai automobiles ("Cars That Make Sense") has little or no effect either upon our personal lives or even Hyundai's sales overall. And we could say the same thing about thousands of other individual and isolated advertiser efforts. But the Hyundai advertising, combined with Apple Computer's advertising, combined with advertising for Tide detergent and Chivas Regal and RCA and Johnson's Floor Wax and the limited -time specials at your local department store or supermarket, has a very powerful collective effect indeed: it instructs us to Buy! And it gives us, via lighthearted entertainment, permission to ignore the long-term consequences of our purchasing decisions by suggesting to us that we should not take any of this too seriously. (We shouldn't take a spilled glass of water too seriously, either. But a flood is a totally different matter.) Advertising's real message, to buy and to buy ever more, to replace what we have rather than repair what we have, at one time served us well. When we were smaller in numbers, when we were still growing, still searching for a collective identity, when personal prosperity was touted as the primary reason for being alive, private property the only form of wealth, and when we were naive enough to believe it all, consumption and the ability to consume (choosing our livelihoods on the basis of whether or not it provided us with that ability!) was not only a way of life, it was a respectable one at that. But we are no longer small in numbers. And we are no longer that naive. We can plainly see that advertising's collective power and our collective response to it has had, and continues to have, a profound and adverse effect upon our personal lives and upon the planet we share. High consumption has far more impact upon our environment than type of consumption. Buying much less and driving much less is better than just switching from plastic to paper or from "normal" unleaded to "super" unleaded. One of the first steps we must take towards consuming fewer goods is to consume less advertising. moreOpen Question: I Just Saw an For "Glymetrol", Is this Yet Another Scam?
I Have Previously Asked a Q, Very Similar to This. A Response Posted Then: In my Mind. Insulin is the Last Resort In a Type II Diabetic (your Father and Perhaps you Mother), the First Choice In a Type I Diabetic. All (Non-Prescription) Items that You Have Mentioned Are Useless, Ultimately, Only Costing him Money and Making him Feel Better that he is Doing Something (Perhaps, the Placebo Effect). These people Are Thieves, and the Media Bears a Great Deal of the Responsibility, for Being Complicit. I Think Many people Expect These "Supplements" to Have Great Effect, Advertisers Are Aware of this. While Some May Well Have a Statistical Significance, By Some Criteria, it Will Not Be Large When Compared With Placebo. Again, Statistical Significance, does Not Mean Large. Thanks Dadd, What a Shock. How does this help advertisers sell their product? moreResolved Question: Can you differentiate "climate" from "weather"?
This is an issue that comes up a lot in this forum's debates about global warming, so I thought I'd drop the definitions in here... Climate is the description of average weather over a period of time, most commonly 30 years. Weather is the state of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, wetness or dryness, calm or storm, clearness or cloudiness, varying over short periods of time. The most common error made in posts on this site are those that fail to recognize that climate is weather averaged over a period of 30 years. There are many comments suggesting that a cold winter indicates a climatic trend. It doesn't. Climate trends require decades to be revealed and verified. When summer arrives, we'll surely see GW advocates pointing to record highs as evidence. They will be just as wrong as those currently using the opposing argument. There is also an assumption on the part of many that local and regional weather correlates to global weather conditions. If you're experiencing record-breaking weather of any kind, it's not relevant to what's happening in other parts of the world, nor does it mean anything with respect to climate trends. As advertisers like to say, "Your results may vary." moreVoting Question: Marketing Strategy for Magazine on Career?

What do you think of the advertising world? I've always loved writing (especially coming up with names and catchy attention getters), graphic design, and psychology. I'm also a media junkie-- I'm obsessed with technology and pop culture. At first glance, advertising seems like the perfect career. But liking a subject isn't the same thing as liking a PROFESSION. I'm scared of the lack of ethics in that industry, as well as the cutthroat people. I know there's going to be good and bad (especially in terms of people) at every workplace, but I feel like advertising is one of those careers, like law, that come to mind when you think "shady, snake in the grass types". I feel like in order to be successful in a corrupt industry, you have to be corrupt yourself. Even if I could maintain my own morals, I cannot STAND that type of environment or those types of people. It's draining. So, what do you say? Is it worth it for me to pursue a career in advertising? I know it's competitive too, but i've already been accepted into a top ad school and plan on interning, interning, interning! Ha All advice about advertising is welcome, but obviously ethics is my main concern. Thanks! moreVoting Question: Trying to watch movies online?

Fox is being an idiot, demanding Time Warner to pay them to air their chanel, just because American Idol will be starting it's season soon and they think Time Warner will want to have their chanel in order to air it. In return Time Warner will charge customers more to cover the cost of giving money to Fox and soon all the networks will want to charge too. I am a Graphic Design doing my first big freelance project for my parent’s campground. Working one on one with my mom on the project, and I realize that we should have discussed the positions we each would take and the amount of my payment before we started. However, at the time I believed that I would be doing 100% of what needed to be done for the two brochures. When it came time to contact other companies to ask about advertising in the brochure, my mom decided she would like to help with that part. So in the end she has called and contacted everyone that is advertising on her brochure. Brochure A) is the bigger of the two and the one with all the advertising on it. So the printing price would be paid with the money made from the advertisers. Brochure B) has no advertising on it, but includes most of the campgrounds info and prices. And the printing price came out of the campground advertising found. My mom wants to pay me by the hour for brochure B, which I’m okay with since we didn’t make any profit off of it with advertising. She would also like to pay me by the hour for brochure A, which I’m not exactly okay with. I feel like we should at least split the profit 60/40. I built and designed the brochure, had to redo the campground map for her. Had to build a map so that the customer can find the campground. Also, had to build most of the ads on the brochure. I contact the printer to get price for printing and to send the file in to get printed. And if anything is wrong with the file, I’m the one that has to fix it. I could split it in to 5 sections, to explain it to my mom a little better so that she sees how much work goes into building and designing the brochure. 1) 20% - The Design and Layout (me) 2) 20% - Two Maps (me) 3) 20% - Contacting companies for advertising. (Mom) 4) 20% - The ads on the brochure (me) 5) 20% - Contacting the printer, sending files, fixing file if needed. (Mom and me) And on top of it, I was working on both brochures at the same time… I don’t know…any advice??? ThanksI did have a set price when I started out...I was suposed to do all the work, therefore I would get 100% of the profit.
