LaMountain In 1982, in its Plyler v. Doe ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court obligated America's public elementary and secondary schools to educate children who are illegal immigrants. Since then, Americans have doled out untold billions to this end. With a new school year recently begun, let's look at what Plyler costs taxpayers in one Portland-area school district: No. 48 in Beaverton. As children from Latin America comprise the great majority of students here illegally, we'll start by examining some national statistics regarding Hispanics and work our way down to the local level. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, some 34 percent of the more than 45 million Hispanics residing in America are under 18. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that Mexico and its southern neighbors contribute four-fifths of our illegal immigrants (commonly believed to number 12 million to 20 million); the Federation for American Immigration Reform, that some 15 percent of illegal immigrants are school-aged children. However sensitive the fact may be, what all this means is that between 9.4 percent and 15.6 percent of Hispanic children in America are here illegally. From these figures, how many Hispanic illegal-immigrant students can we estimate are enrolled in the Beaverton School District? In the most-recently completed (2008-09) school year, according to the district's Website, student enrollment was 37,552; 7,702 of the students were Hispanic. Between 724 and 1,202 of those Hispanic students -- 9.4 percent to 15.6 percent of their total number -- likely were here illegally. What did they cost taxpayers? According to the district, in 2008-09 Beaverton schools' base per-student expenditure was some $8,400 (the general-fund operating budget of $315.6 million divided by student enrollment of 37,552). Each English-language learner -- which, by very conservative estimate, likely included half, or between 362 and 601, of the district's Hispanic illegal-immigrant students -- cost taxpayers another $3,000. More, each child participating in the free- and reduced-lunch program got a federal subsidy of some $260. Washington County's Hispanic children, according to the county's Commission on Children and Families, are four times more likely to live in poverty than its white children; possibly three-quarters of the district's Hispanic illegal-immigrant students, then, received taxpayer-subsidized lunches. So the total estimated cost of Beaverton School District's Hispanic illegal-immigrant students in the 2008-09 school year: between $7.3 million and $12.1 million. Add the estimated one-fifth of illegal-immigrant students who are other than Hispanic, and taxpayers likely spent between $9.1 million and $15.2 million educating and feeding all the district's illegal-immigrant students -- an amount equal to 2.8 percent to 4.8 percent of the general-fund operating budget. Now, to counter recession-induced budget shortfalls, in the past year Portland-area schools have reduced teaching staffs, increased classroom sizes, and slashed extracurricular activities. It must be asked: If not for illegal-immigrant students, how many new teachers could have been hired and existing ones retained? How much more attention could teachers devote to their other students? How many arts and athletic programs could be saved or expanded? The bottom line is this: Americans do not owe educations to illegal immigrants. Our first, foremost, and most sacred responsibility is to our own children. And we beggar our children's education -- and future -- when we spend scarce tax dollars on those who are in our nation illegally. Portland-area school boards should lobby Oregon's Congressional delegation to introduce legislation to overturn Plyler, and to allow America's school districts to require proof of U.S. citizenship or legal U.S. residence from their students. hello: On the Ambien CR website, it mentions something about trying the medicine for 7-days for free; however to do that you have to take some signed certificate to your pharmacy and have them fill it (I think is how it works, correct me if I'm wrong of course!!) That is just a coupon/voucher and kinda hassle. I ask because normally when I see my doctor and she has a medicine that she wants me to start taking or whatever, she almost always has at least a few samples of it to send me home with. This is much easier for me & makes more sense, and I can start taking it immediately. But when I last asked my Dr. about trying Ambien CR instead of just the plain Ambien (I wake up a lot during the night so I thought I would try a few nights & see how it goes), she didn't have any samples of the CR at all. The only advice she had was to go online and print out a coupon from the Ambien website. I just find this strange kind of? Now to part 2 of my question 8-} Just by chance, I went to a friends house that day after the doctor, and she had some sample packets of Ambien CR laying on the kitchen counter....just 1 of those weird timing things I guess lol?! So I asked her if she had to pick them up from a pharmacy & she said no. Her doctor gave them to her?? She had about 5 or 6 little packets that each had 2 Ambien CR pills in them. Weird I thought........ Ok so I'll end this on up LOL The next day I called my doctor (the same one that did not have any samples for me the day before) & quickly told her the story. She was baffled also & said that she gets samples of ALL kinds of new medications in her office almost daily. But the company that makes Ambien, um I forgot the name, has never sent or given her office any type of actual samples that they could offer patients. NOW. I'M TOTALLY CONFUSED? Where did my friend get those? Or why does my Dr. not have them? So now I guess the thing I'd like to ask you all is, have YOU ever gotten a few sample pills from your Dr. directly & if so did it come in smaller packs of 2 pills per each sample? I just don't know what the truth is here or why it is so confusing. and so anyone's help would be a huge help for me in figuring this out.1 more thing to add here is that I went to like google images and yahoo images & typed in like "ambien cr sample pack" and a ton of other things like that in hopes that maybe I could find a photo of what their samples even look like OR I guess even more importantly, just IF the maker of Ambien CR even makes samples or such things? I was not able to get it because someone go to it first but it was all unopened and he said it was free. My Stepfather had kept telling me everything was going to be all right, but even my Mom wasn’t afraid to tell me that it wasn’t. Just yesterday I was wearing a black dress, and crying; ruining my mascara as it ran down my cheeks. It had gotten my face all pudgy and big. Now I was stuck here with my real father who I hadn’t met until my Mother’s funeral had started. His name was Max. He was quite handsome and was only in his thirties. To my mom he was just the man who had gotten her pregnant at seventeen. That’s what I wanted to think of him as, but he wasn’t that man anymore. It was a different feeling than what I had felt when I heard about the stories my mom had told me about him. He might not be dad now, but he could be my friend sometime. Max wasn’t that bad after all. The first time that we looked at each other, our jaws dropped, from how close the resemblances were. He had short dark brown hair, which was the color of milk chocolate. My hair was almost the same color, but just a tint lighter from my mom’s blond hair. His blue eyes twinkled, from the happiness in his eyes. Just like mine did. Except for not right now. Max had the same dimple in his chin. The one where when you smiled you could see it right away. It was like his signature for his face. That thought made me laugh. I touched my chin where my dimple showed. But mine was deeper written in my face. I rubbed my eyes and got up from the double bed. I could smell fried eggs and bacon being made downstairs while someone hummed with joy. Max was a professional chef, unlike my mom. My mom couldn’t make cereal. I remember always having to make everything for dinner and holidays. It would be a change having a break for once. I went to the over sized closet doors and opened the French closet doors. I gasped from what I saw. The closet was at least ten yards long and the width was not even imaginable. Row after row was the most fancy clothes that you could think of. Wow, I guess Max wanted me to feel welcome. I went to the rail that was closest and grabbed a pair of jeans. I tried to remember this rail would come in handy for school. The new school was going to be hard to get used to. I never fit into anywhere. My mom had tried so much for me to make friends, but it was just not possible. I walked down to the far sidewall and looked at every shirt. I picked out one with a v-shaped neckline that was a light gray and with lace at the bottom. Looks like Max had some average clothes too, incase I wasn’t like other girls. I would have to remind myself to thank him later. I heard footsteps and a light knock on the door. “ May I come in?” “ Um, sure,” The door opened and Max smiled, seeing that I had found my way into the big closet. “ Hey I thought you might want some breakfast before you go to school. To my mom he was just the man who had gotten her pregnant at seventeen. That’s what I wanted to think of him as, but he wasn’t that man anymore. It was a different feeling than what I had felt when I heard about the stories my mom had told me about him. He might not be dad now, but he could be my friend sometime. Max wasn’t that bad after all. The first time that we looked at each other, our jaws dropped, from how close the resemblances were. He had short dark brown hair, which was the color of milk chocolate. My hair was almost the same color, but just a tint lighter from my mom’s blond hair. His blue eyes twinkled, from the happiness in his eyes. Just like mine did. Except for not right now. Max had the same dimple in his chin. The one where when you smiled you could see it right away. It was like his signature for his face. That thought made me laugh. I touched my chin where my dimple showed. But mine was deeper written in my face. I rubbed my eyes and got up from the double bed. I could smell fried eggs and bacon being made downstairs while someone hummed with joy. Max was a professional chef, unlike my mom. My mom couldn’t make cereal. I remember always having to make everything for dinner and holidays. It would be a change having a break for once. I went to the over sized closet doors and opened the French closet doors. I gasped from what I saw. The closet was at least ten yards long and the width was not even imaginable. Row after row was the most fancy clothes that you could think of. Wow, I guess Max wanted me to feel welcome. I went to the rail that was closest and grabbed a pair of jeans. I tried to remember this rail would come in handy for school. The new school was going to be hard to get used to. I never fit into anywhere. My mom had tried so much for me to make friends, but it was just not possible. I walked down to the far sidewall and looked at every shirt. I picked out one with a v-shaped neckline that was a light gray and with lace at the bottom. Looks like Max had some average clothes too, incase I wasn’t like other girls. I would have to remind myself to thank him later. I heard footsteps and a light knock on the door. “ May I come in?” “ Um, sure,” The door opened and Max smiled, seeing that I had found my way into the big closet. “ Hey I thought you might want some breakfast before you go to school. You hungry?” Just then my stomach growled and Max smiled even more. “ I guess I wouldn’t mind some breakfast,” We walked down to the kitchen together and I took a seat on a stool. The smell of breakfast was overwhelming. Max put a plate full of strawberries, eggs, toast, and bacon in front of me. He started humming and moving around the kitchen. I couldn’t help, but to smile at him. “What?” He asked with a wide grin across his face. “Nothing. I’m just not used to being with you, that’s all.” He came to my side and put his right arm over my shoulders. “ Well, Truce you better get used to this, because this is who I am,” He paused and turned to put his lips right next to my ear, “I’m not used to having a girl in the house so you got to be patient with me,” It was a very soft whisper. I knew that this would be so easy to get used to. Why did my mom just let him go like this? This was my father and I knew that there would come a day when I really could call him Dad. Max got up and paced to the counter and opened up a cupboard. On the top shelf was a crinkled brown envelope. He took it in his hands and went back to where I was sitting. He handed the envelope and I just stared at his face. “What’s this?” I was stunned by the look that Max wore on his face. It was puzzled and just as bit curious as I was. Well i downloaded counter strike for free, but cant play it. when i downloaded it i choose to have a desktop icon. So when i clicked on the icon it said that the thing the icon was representing was invalid. So i go to the actual counter strike folder, and there's no button for the app to play. i clicked on everything, opened every folder and cant play the game. the following event occured on May 7th, 2009/ 5:31pm So today on the radio, they said that today was the last day to go to KFC and get those free meals because someone hacked the website. Now when i came home from school, i missed car riders because i was suppeose to go but i didn't here my name being called at school. So once i got home, i was picked up and taken to KFC. I got there and saw Zach Waldorf and i was like hey man. So then i we left and went to another KFC to get more free meals. So at the time it was 5:31. Me, my mom, and my sister stepped in. So me and my sister sat down while my mom was getting food.... ...Then next thing we notice, is a mexican fella saying that they stopped the free meals at 5:30 but it was no sign outside that said so. So my mom was like, "Hey there was no sign and you didn't tell anyone ahead of time." So then the guy says ma'am we are sorry. So then my mom says "Excuse me, can i get your name sir." And then the guy was like, "I'm not telling you my name." So then my mom said, "Well i'll just right "Mexican Fella." THEN IT HAPPENED. While that happened, a woman beside my mom dropped her money and then told the man, "Give her her sh**" and took the paper back. One poster, several years ago wrote: I think I'm quitting Yahoo Answers. Everyone is spreading rotten apostate lies. I think there are too many apostates here. I've blocked over a hundred so far! When I searched for examples of these “apostate lies” I came up with the following (frequently mentioned cases): 1. Jehovah’s Witnesses were once discouraged from playing chess. 2. Jehovah’s Witnesses have discouraged their children from attending universities 3. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not allowed to read religious literature that criticizes or attacks their major doctrines. 4. The Watchtower Society was sued for its lax policy on child abuse cases. 5. The WTS once prohibited its members from having vaccinations. 6. The WTS discourages members from being police officers (carrying weapons, etc). 7. The WTS entered into a compromise agreement with the government of Bulgaria. Members of the group always say that the ONLY place to find out the truth about the Jehovah’s Witnesses is by visiting their official website. However, the official website does not answer many of these questions. Why don’t they add a section called “common misunderstandings?” This section could state very clearly: 1. JWs were never discouraged from playing chess. 2. There was never any criticism or concern about JWs pursuing Masters and Doctorate degrees. 3. JWs are completely free to read books and pamphlets that attack their beliefs. 4. The WTS has never once been sued for a child abuse scandal. 5. JWs have never had any concerns or opposition to vaccinations. 6. There is no problem at all with a JW being a police officer and using deadly force. 7. The WTS never had any negotiations or compromise with the government of Bulgaria. If the official site had such a section, it would greatly reduce all of the horrible slander and lies that are spread about your faith. So why doesn’t the WTS provide specific counter-arguments to all the rotten apostate lies that are being spread about Jehovah’s Witnesses?Way with Words: I am not an apostate – as I understand that term. I completely agree that the WTS should defend itself against these slanderous lies. The problem is that most of these lies are about the history of the organization and it’s really hard to find information about those topics on your official website.
