I am building a website for a client. I'm not making it from scratch (writing my own code and creating some of the template graphics). I'm using free resources online and I make sure it's legal for own use/sell. (Free templates for example.) It's faster, efficient and gives me more time to modify the website to perfection. Question is, I don't feel it's right to charge too much if I'm not making it from scratch. This is my first time getting paid for this, how much should I charge? Also, am I still technically considered a web-designer, web-developer and/or webmaster? Thanks in advance! more

Hi. I would like to start a web hosting company by joining a reseller program. I have two programs in mind, but I don't know which one is better. 1. Www.resellerspanel.com: this program is free and you can sell all different kinds of plans which includes unlimited domain hosting, tons of disk space, free domain, auto responder, website builder, control panel, marketing tools, and much more. However, the hosting you sell does not come with cpanel. The company takes care of customer support, and servers and matinence. They take a wholesale cost which covers there work, and however much you mArkup is what you keep. So if the business plan has a wholesale of $40 per year, if u mark it up to $100 a year, you keep 60$ a year from that client. The program also gives me a pre made site with different templates to promote the hosting. I also get a control panel to see everything. They have great marketing tools. 2. Www.hostgator.com: this is probably a more popular reseller program. You do sell hosting with c panel, but it costs 25-100 dollars each month, and doesn't have as much space as resellerspanel. However, they don't take a wholesale from you like reseller panel does. They don't supply 24/7/365 support for your clients like resellerspanel does. So, I am leaning towards resellerspanel since it costs less, but do you think no cpanel will make a huge difference? Which program should i use? more

I am a web page novice. My web page (I downloaded a free template from a designer), was created using MS FP for Windows XP. It had been some time since updating my site and I found out Front Page is no longer made and I don't want to pay alot of money for a new copy anyway. I went online and saw reviews for WebEasy 8 Professional. I paid $50 for it only to find out the web page sizes are pre-set, even when I choose a blank page. You can't enlarge the area to fit what it is you wish to discuss. Am I missing something? I've tried everything and now I can't believe I bought this software. I'm sick about it. I downloaded Coffee Cup 2010 HTML, but that is a little too advanced for me. I really liked the HTML and the WYSIWYG side-by-side style of Front Page. Tweaking could be done on the HTML side or changes could be made directly to the WYSIWYG side without a hitch. Is there anything out there that closely mimics this? I am really missing Front Page right now.Thank you comtech3, I did know that expression web replaced front page, I've since looked at coffee cup html and coffee cup visual web builder, I just don't know why I can't get both things at once as on front page. Front page was so darned easy, even for those of us who are not html savvy. I could change the font by clicking on it as in a word processor, I miss that. more

I am currently working on creating my own website via Shopify. It is very good but I may not be able to use Shopify as I sell personalised products. I am not a web builder but am happy with the cms system. When creating the product Shopify only lets you set up different size choices and colours etc not set variations of custom text fields for customers to fill in their details for personalisation. I need to be able to have variations of custom text field for each product and then to take the info through to the cart. Does any one know a company out there who offer free templates and a good cms system so I can make my on website. I am a small business so don't want one that goes on about tracking customers etc I want an attractive shop that I can sell my personalised gifts. I am competent with illustrator and photoshop so can do the designing myself, I can't do codes etc. more

OK So I just need a one page website where people can come to to pay me for a service. I decided to go with a template I found on the web. So Im trying to remember how this process works. Sooo the template includes the files with images, index, something called default, and license. So I thought I might need something to edit this stuff with and dowloaded eversoft First Page 2006. Now the issue is- I thought the program was supposed to take the html and show me what it looks like and let me edit it in a viewable format, as if I was editing a website on a browser (just not published to web) and then translate that into html and I could then load it. I mean I have no idea how to edit all this html, css stuff any other way. Help. How do I edit free templates? If I knew how to edit HTML I could build the frekkin site from scratch. Arghhh more

I tried freewebs (now just webs). It made me pick a template and had all these steps for layouts and stuff. And I couldn't figure out how to view the file or insert it in a page. Resolved Question: web design client - I really screwed up in the beginning?

I am a web-designer. About 6 months ago, I offered to help out some friends who have an investment company and re-vamp their website for them, free of charge. (They were good friends and I was just re-vamping a little- so I just offered to help them out). Since then, the website has grown to over 4500 members (When I started there were less than 300 and grew to over 4500 in a matter of 3 months). When they built the site- they used a hosting company that had pre-made templates to use with modules (for forums etc..) Since I am a web-developer and their pre-made template was HORRIBLE, I offered to help them out and re-vamp the template they had with some CSS over-rides. Great. Now they are looking to expand even more, and are requesting that I do some more with the site. I have told them they need a new system and to get off the current pre-made hosting they have (they cant upload files to a file manager etc.. it's VERY limited what can be done). The modules they are provided are not meant to keep up with sites with as large a membership as theirs. So my question is this- I have a job, a family and I'm in school. It basically has gone from a few things here and there- to a full time web admin job.. only I'm not getting paid anything. What is the best way to approach this with the owners? I cannot keep putting in this many hours for them, it's taking away from me making money at my own business....... (1) Just walk away and tell them I cannot do it anymore (2) Ask for some compensation (and if so- what do I ask for? normal hourly rate? or just something- after-all i did offer in the beginning to just do it) (3) Continue to help them for free- and keep my mouth shutThanks so much for the great advice so far! I broke the one rule I was taught by a mentor, "Once you decide to take on web-design as a job.. NEVER do anything for free- even for friends and/or family" =) They live in different states, so an in-person sit down meeting is most likely out of the question. The text wants to become a link. It renders fine in Firefox and Safari, but not in IE8. I wouldn't be concerned, because I do not use IE8 ever, but I know a lot of people do. I would like to think that I have a pretty good eye for design, but I can't create my own web design if my life depended on it.
