Open Question: Must-have Mac Freeware?

I don't do too much with my Macbook besides browse the web, do homework (with MSOffice programs, mostly, though I do group stuff on Google Docs), watch videos, and play music. I don't game at all, but I'd like to get the most out of this computar-machine for what I do with it. What are some "must-have" applications (preferably Freeware, for obvious reasons, though I'd buy something that's relatively cheap as long as it has a demo I can try out) I should get? I'm looking mainly for stuff to do with the following: - Google Functionality - My life is on Google (Calendar, GMail, Docs, droid, etc), so anything that makes these services accessible in a better and faster way would be peachy. - Torrents - I use uTorrent currently, although I do like Frostwire quite a bit, it seems a little buggy and system-intensive. Speaking of this sort of deal, is there anything better than PeerGuardian to use alongside it? - Plugins - I'd like to keep to the software that came on my Mac as far as mail/addressbook/itunes/ichat goes, but they're a bit lacking in customizability and even some functionality. Any iTunes plugins or hacks that'd let me play DivX/XviD/etc with iTunes? Anything that'd make iChat a little less...big? Or a way to do video chat via Google on it? - System cleanup - I just downloaded a 15-day demo/trial of MacKeeper and I freaking love it. Considering getting a 2-year subscription, though I wish I could just make it a "lifetime" deal. Is there anything similar or better that's free or cheaper? Anything else that I might find useful or cool would be...well, cool. Shoot whatever you think I should check out at me! more

I'm thinking along the lines of free mmo games but this question can apply to any type of freeware. So how do the freeware devs make lots of money, or even just enough money to sustain there product thats needs constant attention i.e firefox web browser, anti viruses software like avira and avast, mmorpgs with severs like maplestory? Here are the specs for the computer I'm having problems with: CPU: Wolfdale Core 2 Duo E8400 GPU: ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 260 216 Core RAM: G-Skill Gaming Ram (2 x 2 GB) PSU: X-Power 585 Watt Motherboard: ASUS P5N-D HDD: 2 x 1 TB Samsung, ~300GB Maxtor IDE OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Description of problem: When I boot the computer the normal beep is heard and then the motherboard logo, I have the to enter the BIOs. After the motherboard logo disappears the screen goes black and where I usually have a screen that lets me choose between booting Vista or Windows 7 there is nothing. The only light on the computer is the green power light and the busy orange light is off and not moving. It is almost as if the computer gives up and just displays nothing. Pre-Problem: I was playing Garrys Mod for a good 5+ hours when I minimized the game I noticed my computer was slouching along and barely able to operate a web browser. So I closed Garrys Mod and went back to the desktop where it started to respond faster and I just figured that the RAM was used up and like any other time a reboot would fix the problem. I keep my computer very clean and I defrag often and the only program running at all times is AVG. After turning the computer off I turned it back on and now the problem has started. What I've Done So Far: * I have unplugged all the HDDs, Disk Drive, GPU and RAM and plugged them back in. I kept a eye out for any kind of damage but I could find none. After putting the computer back together nothing has changed. * I have gone to the BIOs and looked through to make sure that everything on the computer is responding. The BIOs can see every HDD and gives the accurate slot location and capacity of the drives. It can see the CPU and all the information is accurate. Motherboard and CPU fans are all responding and the voltage readings are all where they should be. * I have ran boot POST and all 4 GB of RAM is OK. * I have switched monitors and still have a black screen, I have switch GPU and still have the same problem. * I have tried unhooking the HDDs and running the HDD that only has the OS Windows 7 and still the same. I tried only hooking up the HDD with Windows Vista and still the same. * I created both a Windows 7 Boot Disk and a Windows System Repair Disc and whenever I try to boot from CD-ROM is comes up saying Boot Disk Failure, Enter a System Disk. I tried this all three different HDDs hooked up at once. I think I have eliminated these from causing the problems: GPU, RAM, HDD(All 3), CPU, Motherboard and PSU. I cannot figure out what is going on with my computer and this has never happened before, it is clearly custom built and has been problem free since I built it over a year ago. The HDD I put Windows 7 on is brand new and the CPU I put in went in without a problem. If you have any suggestions, please share them. Meanwhile I am going to try and test the disk drive in another computer and I am going to swap disk drives to see if a different one will accept the boot disks. EDIT- I forgot to add that the CPU is running at normal Idle temp. more

Open Question: Xbox 360 fanboys needed?

I don't see why people like 360s more than ps3s and here's my reasoning Online- Ps3 has free online with many of the same features as xbox live and an optional 50 dollar a year price for ps+ which gives discounts and free dlc. All you get with xbox live is cross game chatting Online features- While xbox 360 can stream netflix ( I'll admit that's nice) but you get the same job done with ps3s netflix. Also you can access any website using the web browser. On 360 you can only use certain sites Disc- 360 has a disc tray (really? Even the wii doesn't us that) and for some reason it isn't locked in place so if you move it you can say goodbye to your disc. Also ps3 plays cd/DVD/bluray and before all the fanboys go "ohh bluray isn't needed in gaming console" let me just say that not only can you watch blu Ray movies but every game multiplat or exclusive is on a bluray disc so while 360 has 8gb of disc space ps3 has 54 gb. So that makes ps3 games much better in my opinion Graphics- Now multiplat games look better on 360 with the exception of a few but as for exclusive games 360 has nothing that looks as good as uncharted 2 Exclusives- 360 exclusive are 90% first person shooters. I like shooters but I like variety too. Here's a list of some exclusives on each Ps3- uncharted uncharted 2 mag god of war 3 mgs4 littlebigplanet infamous killzone2 resistance 2 ratchet and clank gran turismo 5 MLB the show 360- Halo Halo wars halo reach halo odst gears of war gears of war 2 forza 3 Mass Effect Mass Effect 2 Left4dead Left4dead 2 Now I think the ps3 has way better games and alot more variety and most of the 360 "exclusives" I can play on my computer Others- Rrod happens alot more often than ylod Ps3 has to download a bit of the game first 360 olds can be really loud Old 360s don't have wifi All 360s have a powerbrick 360s are expensive to upgrade HDD This is all I'm going to say for now. 360 fanboys give me all you got. I am building a website for a client. I'm not making it from scratch (writing my own code and creating some of the template graphics). I'm using free resources online and I make sure it's legal for own use/sell. (Free templates for example.) It's faster, efficient and gives me more time to modify the website to perfection. Question is, I don't feel it's right to charge too much if I'm not making it from scratch. This is my first time getting paid for this, how much should I charge? Open Question: Can somebody PLEASE make my Rollover Images hate me less?

I am having the worst time ever with rollover images on my website: aiviabelleth.webs.com Can somebody please tell me how to fix any or all of these things? 1: My Rollover Image/Link for my story (the one directly under the "home" link) refuses to change when rolled over. 2: There are spaces in between all of the images. I don't understand why, but CSS reset and defining the image sizes hasn't helped at all. 3: And... This just topped the cake. On my "Art" page (the links do work, so you can access it on the menu), the "art" link has blown up to an enormous eyesore for no reason. Surprisingly, the image still rolls over... I have MS Access, if that helps at all, and would obviously prefer the process of database creation AND hosting it online to be free, I would NEVER think about buying and hosting a domain just for this database. Converting .mov (QuickTime) files to a format that can be edited on a PC using Windows Movie Maker (WMM)? This might look familiar to some of you because I've kinda already asked this. But, apparently, I wasn't clear in my needs so I am going to try things a little different. I have an Aiptek digital camcorder bought in November of 2010. I believe it is an Aiptek HD-1 since I can't find anything on the Aiptek website that looks exactly like it but it at least has the same features. It has 720p HD recording capacity and has been a great little camera. I have all kinds of movies that I would like to put together for the friends I have made this summer so that they can look back on the fun times in the future. (I'm an intern from across the country.) Here's my problem: The camera ONLY records in .mov, regardless if I do HD (720p) or QVGA (WEB) at 30fps or WVGA (DVD) at 60fps. I record in the HD because it gives me the largest beginning aspect and I know that if you start with more pixels it's better because you're only going to lose them along the way. I've heard that the majority of converters will not only add frames and make your videos choppy but that they will actually try to compress your videos so that they're only good for viewing on a hand-held device. I'm not opposed to this, but I am opposed to being restricted to watching anything on a 3" (Zune) screen. No, I won't own an iPod because I want what's left of my eyesight. Windows Movie Maker for xp does NOT recognize .mov files so I can only watch them in QuickTime. I do NOT have QuickTime Pro and don't know how to use it. I'm also wary of purchasing a $30 product that all it can do is convert. (Which is why I don't have Apple products to begin with. I have a thing against collecting stuff that only has a single use.) I would like it to be free because I'm on a laptop with xp but my computer at home has Windows Vista and I can probably just do the Windows Live Movie Maker from there. But I'm hardpressed to ask an office of 30 people for their personal addresses so that I can work on this and send it to them after I finish. I was hoping to be able to finish this project by the end of the summer (August 6, 2010) to give it to them. I want to go home to edit it in Windows Live Movie Maker which, from what I understand from the interwebs, does allow you to import .mov movie files and edit them. However, I can't use the Live Movie Maker because I do not have Vista on this computer. (Whoever thought that I would be wanting Vista? LOL) I can't get spyware or malware on this computer. It's borrowed and they need it when I get back. I have tried the free version of Prism and it insanely wrecks the picture. Short of having an old-timey video, I would say to stay away from that when trying to do HD. Also, the accompanying free software to edit it doesn't maintain the HD quality-output, either. The software was okay but the free version certainly didn't instill in me that I wanted to pay for it. NCH software was probably cool at one point because it looks like all the capabilities were free, but the freeware they have out now is uninspiring and didn't impress me. I guess it's fine if you're going to use it to put on a Zune or iPod but that's not what I'm doing so I don't need any suggestions related thereto. I tried Handbrake and that was more fail and facepalm than I would care to explain. For those of you who are not up to date on your Handbrake, it no longer does AVI so it's useless to me. Please don't suggest that I didn't spend the better part of four hours of my life that I will never retrieve trying to follow suggestions on how to use Handbrake to get my .mov to a .avi so that I can make it a .wmv because it doesn't. IT DOESN'T DO IT ANYMORE...at least in the free version. I don't know if there is a paid version but if there is, the free one didn't inspire me. I didn't keep up with movie editing while in college and I don't know my way around media files or their formats and I don't understand codecs other than to say that I understand they help decode the file. Don't want to know computer language just to convert a file. I am aware that WMM DOESN'T play .mov. I had thought I had projected a pretty good grasp on Apple using .mov as a proprietary move for having people download and buy QuickTime Pro but apparently I didn't. Windows does not equal Apple. The reverse is also true. I'm not asking to put .mov directly into WMM because you can't do that on an OS before Vista. I am saying, though, that I need help getting it out of Apple territory without losing too many pixels and into Windows. MC Skat Kat's an animated cat who happens to be a rapper. A SAFE rapper, like MC Hammer. He first appeared in Paula Abdul's critically acclaimed "Opposites Attract" video. Other characters, a mouse named Micetro, a tall, black-haired cat named Taboo, and a short, raspy-voiced cat named Fatz even appeared in said video. Other characters would be included in the Stray Mob, including a brawny dog named Leo, a she-cat with orange fur named Katleen, and a she-cat with brown fur named Silk, who all made their first appearance in the "Skat Strut" music video, which was the most requested in 1991. Why it didn't make it to the U.S. charts I'll never understand. I'm sick and tired of today's rappers and their vulgarity being exposed to younger people. What I'm looking for is a clean rap album from 1991 with tracks I can follow along. Of course, only a few songs are rated PG for the mild bits. What ticks me off is the fact that all the songs have not had their lyrics posted online. And let me tell you, NONE of the lyrics offended me whatsoever. Okay, so my friend let me try and fix his laptop and so i cleared out a bunch of unwanted programs that were just basic things, like an old calculator application, and some random game downloads and such. Well, he got this virus it appears from a modding website that we were trying to work. So now he gave the laptop to me and i was gonna try and download Trend Micro PC Pro but it say that his laptop doesn't fit the criteria. His laptop is running Windows XP 2002 version with Service Pack 3 but even though its already updated on that part fully (there are only 3 service packs) its still will not let me download any the software so i think i need to update it to a higher model, so my choices are either Windows 7 or Windows Vista. WELL HERE'S THE PROBLEM, i go to download, from the microsoft official website, anything that may help update his laptop and allow me to download some help, turns out every time i go to download "anything" and i mean "ANYTHING" it will redirect me to a basic "web page not found" or one of those "HTML40 something not working" and there are some other different ones i get. I know im connected to the internet so im sure that its the virus that is preventing me from downloading anything. I've already restored the system this time making sure not to clean out any programs that may help with downloads but it still isn't progressing anything. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I just spent the last 14 hours working on this thing but i've only taken Computer Applications 1 when a High-school Freshman so i Absolutely no clue, im afraid im gonna be forced to randomly delete things that look foreign until something works and i don't want to do that.
