Open Question: How do you make a web server?

I have a macbook pro with leopard. I know how to use dreamweaver and create web pages. But recently the free web servers with 64 megabytes hasn't been enough. I'm trying to create my own web server with my macbook pro. I know almost nothing about ip and server stuff. On the web sharing thing in system preferences you get your ip address, but that only works locally. I go places with my laptop but almost all of them have internet access. but since i take my laptop places and don't want my server to be down i have to have a dynamic ip. so i can't use a static one. i think that the dyndns app fixes this. but all i need is help getting my server viewable by the world wide web. Please help and give instructions in detail because i know almost nothing about this apache web server stuff. Thank in advance.i need to do it through wlan more

Open Question: should I become a translator, and if so how?

i am running out of time before i have to chose my career and go to a 4 year university. (either the University of Arizona or the University of Phoenix) and i have no clue what i want to do the other day however i asked you wonderful people of yahoo answers what i should do and was unanimously told to be a translator, or interpreter, or something in linguistics in general. so i've been thinking long and hard about it and this is one of the only career choices that have caught my interest or seems like it would suit me. i've been learning japanese in my free time for around 2 years, and was planning on learning other if i could become fluent (progress is pretty slow as i have been only using free resources from the web) so i am considering whether or not i should just go for it and become a translator or interpreter or something. the only problem is i have no idea what this entails- what classes would i have to take? how long will it take to graduate? how much work would it be? should i stick with just japanese or should i double up and learn 2 languages? what kind of jobs would i be able to get? how much money would i make, woiuld i even be able to make a decent living off of it? would i even be able to get a job in my small arizona town? should i do this? so many questions i cant find answers to please, help me obi wa-...yahoo answers you're my only hope more

Open Question: What is the difference between audio formats mp4, mpg1 and mpg2?

I am using a program called Free HD Converter. It has options of saving the converted raw file (an mts file) in the following formats: avi, flv, mp4, mpg1, mpg2 and wmv. I don't know what to choose. I had someone say they wanted an mpeg copy of the video - well, it looks like I have 3 choices with this software. I do have other software for editing but first things first, can someone explain the differences? If I share it online, it makes sense to save it has flv, because that's what youtube wants and facebook will let you post youtube videos right. Any advice? You might ask why I'm using this converter. Well, I got Adobe Premiere Elements to edit my HD (AVCHD) videos that I was recording. The problem is that my computer cannot keep up with it. The editing/preview window and the sound stops/freezes after a couple seconds on larger files. I cannot drag the play head and move things around. Smaller files I can. Of course, Premiere Elements doesn't edit flv. So, can someone give me advice and please explain the difference between mp4, mpg1 and mpg2 formats. My google searches, and yahoo searches have not given me any clarity. The software doesn't seem to explain what it means by mp4, mpg1 and mpg2, so it's hard to match up any explanation out on the web with these choices in the software. Bruce more

Open Question: Shall i move onto C++ now instead of carrying on with Java?

Hey, i have been doing java for about 3 months (roughly :/ ) and ive been doing other programming for about 2 years...(PAWNO and web deisng stuff...), the reason i started java was because i want to eventually be able to make my own online game (sorta like a crap version of runescape :p ) and i heard that i should probaly start with java...So i did, and ive learned a lot during the last 3 months and now i can create 2d Games (sort of), i have a lot of problems with a few things although, i can make 2d games quite easily... now i am wondering if i should move onto C++ now, instead of learning advanced Java,...the only reason i think i should go to C++ now, instead of later, is because there is NO decent java 2d game tutorials for free anywhere and it might be harder to get 3D tutorials in java..lol, Im hoping that C++ will have more tutorials for free online (ive already foudn a few by accident which look great!).....so im just wondering if everyone thinks i should move to C++....at end of day, Java was just to introduce me to programming, and im gonna end up doing C++ anyways, lol... --thanks more

Open Question: Career in Music - What Should I Do?

So, I'm 19 *soon to be 20*, graduated high school almost 2 years ago, and, I'm still torn about what to do with myself. When I graduated I had no direction, absolutely no direction lol. I tried my hands at all kinds of things, but ended up quitting. Not out of depression or "oh I suck at this blah blah blah", but just because I get bored. I'm the type of person that gets very bored and restless if I don't have something to do........except when I was working at my last job, and when I play my music. My last job was awesome, pretty much was with an internet marketing/consulting/advertising companies. 2 of them at once in fact (working with my direct boss, and then helping him out with his biggest account as pretty much the "assist consultant" or "secondary consultant"). It wasn't your typical white collar, desk-jockey, type job. That type of job, where I'm just pushin paper/pencil would kill me, I'm way to restless. But with this past job, I got to be creative, I got to use my ideas, I got to edit/make videos, websites, pictures, etc. And I got my training for free. BUT, unfortunately, due to the economy, the business has taken a hit. Boss said he can't afford to pay me right now, and didn't want to have me working for free lol, but that I'd most likely be able to come back in a couple months. So, more like laid-off than fired. Now on to my music. I play flamenco guitar. I play everyday and I can honestly say that it's the one and only thing that truly makes me happy. It's my release. I would absolutely LOVE to make a career out of it, but it's music, much easier said than done. And considering it's also flamenco, considering most people probably think about the bird (flamingo) when they see the word, it's not exactly all that main-stream. Lately I've been very lost, very very lost. I've tried my hand at a few things, and quit all of them. College........psh, yea right. I'm not lazy, not lazy at all, trust me, the responsibility of my last job was enormous. It's just, college isn't right for everybody, some people just aren't meant to go, and I happen to be one of those people. What can I say? I tried, only lasted a year then I decided that I couldn't keep doing it. And some more things here and there I don't want to elaborate on, and make this any longer than it already is. Anyway, on to my question (sorry for rambling), when it comes down to it, the only 2 things I haven't quit are: my job, and flamenco. The reason why I keep trying my hand at other things and not just sticking with music and the job that I have/had, is that it's free-lance. Times are good, times are bad. Music is artistic, and the web-job is free-lance. Basically, it's not something I'm guaranteed to always have (if that makes sense). And I'm a person that grew up with VERY little stability in my life, so the thought of living the rest of my life like that......just the thought of it stressed the hell outta me. But still, those are the only 2 things I haven't quit. So, finally, my question is: What just sticking with my gut and do music and the internet-marketing job (when I get it back, or even finding clients of my own), or should I keep searching for something else? Just trying to get some other people's (aside from family/friends) view, you know, people who don't really know me, kind of an objective point of view. Thanks and I appreciate your advice. Open Question: Sidekick Unlimited Plan?

I've realized that this question has appeared on Yahoo Answers many times, but the questions & answers varies which makes me all the more confused. I currently have T-Mobile with a family plan of 3 lines. Our plan only includes 700 minutes for the family with nights & weekends free. We pay about $80 a month. Our contract is almost over and I plan to upgrade my phone to a sidekick. So my question is, what would be the total monthly cost including the $80 if i keep the 700 minutes family plan? I also want to use the sidekick to make phone calls. I've researched this over the internet and most people say that if I get the unlimited plan (unlimited web browsing, text messaging, AIM), the cost is about $20. I'm confused about the voice plan. Would my monthly bill be $100? more

Open Question: considering majoring in linguistics as a translator or interpreter, but unsure of what this entails?

i've been trying to figure out what to do as a career since near the end of high school and havent been able to think of anything good. so i asked the all powerful internets and they have told me time and time again that i should be a linguist and work as a translator or interpreter. i thought long and hard about this and am unsure about what to do. im getting ready to transfer to either the university of arizona or the university of phoenix after i finish up this semester, but i still have no clue what to major in (which is kind of required ;P) and so far the suggestion of being a linguist is one of the only ones that kinda peaked my interest, simply learn another language and tell people what other people are saying, right? i get to use my brain without doing hard math problems or anything that the other careers ive considered require. basically i have a bunch of questions i would hope to have answers to from you fine people of the interwebs- what does this require? what language(s) should i learn? how much will this cost? how much will i be able to make? what kind of stuff would i have to do? ive alwys gotten straight A's without even really trying all throughout school including college (although i did get a B in physics 110 once and my parents beat me lol), so i have a pretty good head on my shoulders- though i've never really been creative or ambitious enough to use it for anything. ive been learning japanese in my spare time from various resources on the web and am starting to get it a little (but free resources are really hard to find). and before anyone even suggested linguist i was already planning on learning as many other languages as possible like italian, french, russian, etc. just for the heck of it(to be a showoff). throughout college writing and english have always been my best subject, and have been told by pretty much everyone who proofread my essays that i was the best writer in the class, so i have a pretty good handle on the english language. and to top it all off i am a very modest and humble person. >_> oops.. dammit, i always end up making these questions way too long and drawn out... sorry about that so what does it take to be a successful linguist, what should i do? are their any linguists, translators, or interpretters who would be willing to write a longwinded reply to my even more longwinded question telling what you had to do to get where you are, how much it costs, how much you make, etc thanks, and sorry again for the wall of text... i have a bad habbit of doing thatok apparently being a linguist is different from being a translator which is what im interested in im interested in learning a specific language and translating and stuff, not the study of languages in general more

This thread again, i want more opinions and its deep into the pages. well, i was talking to my friend who lives over in California, i myself live in Illinois. He told me that he rejected this girl because he didn't like her, but she wouldn't leave him alone. So i told him to introduce me to her, and id do some playful flirting to make her loosen up a bit and get over him a bit. I kept it light, but apparently within two weeks of us meeting, for three days she was still in love with my friend, and now she wants to marry me. Iv rejected her and told her that because of where we live, we cant meet and we cant be together, and she needs to find someone she likes that's closer too her. she didnt agree with this, no matter how much i insisted and how much of a dick i was, and still tried to flirt with me. But I'm naturally flirty, so within a few days, i started flirting again. This is where i need your opinion After a few more days, i made a deal with her; I told her that I'll still flirt with her and she can flirt with me, as long as she tries to find someone else and her whole day does not consist of talking to me. She agreed, and we have been flirting hardcore, and she tells me she wants to get a web cam and put on a little "show" for me. I dont love her, iv never been in love my whole life. I like her, and i want her to be happy, but i think thats as deep as my feelings go for her, i just like her more than any girl i know. I have 4 kids and currently 3 of them are in school. How ever I find myself disappointed in the public school system. My oldest is genus level and yet she cannot be advanced so she is actually learning, my second oldest is doing poorly in reading no matter what her teacher and I discuss, as for my youngest in school he is advancing past his class. At the same time I don't want to get over whelmed myself because that can make learning hard for them if I am constantly frustrated. Has any one home schooled multiple kids at different levels? How do I choose what curriculum to follow? Has any one else had personal experiences with home/online school for k-12? Background: I have a Bachelor's degree, but it is not in Computer Science. I fully intend on going back for a Master's in Computer Science eventually, but it is not a feasible option at this moment. I understand that having the degree is most beneficial when it comes to displaying credentials and capabilities as opposed to self study. However, I also know that many, many programmers have become very successful programmers working in enterprise environments without a relevant degree. My question is... how do you make that first break into the field without a scholastic background or internship to speak to, but have the solid development foundation and programming capabilities? I'm not opposed to working for free as an apprentice to build experience and become a better web programmer, but I would like to hear from people about how they started in the field. Open Question: What's a good, cheap character creator for making book illustrations?

I'm writing several books, and I'd love to create illustrations of my characters. I'm not a good artist in the figure-drawing department. I'm working with a combination of Sci-Fi and fantasy and have several races of aliens along with elves, dwarfs, pixies, and talking beasts. So far, all the character creators I've tried either don't have enough ways to customize or require writing code. Free programs like My Web Face and Meez flat out don't have enough options; none of the Sims creators let me alter height (my main character is 5' nothing, the dwarfs and pixies are shorter, the elves are much taller). Has anyone used a program that has plenty of options that can be tweaked with mere mouse clicks? It's a part-time hobby, not my full-time job, so I don't want anything expensive or complicated. weatherspoons pub do special offers on different days like steak club on a tuesday, curry club on thursday and sunday club all with a free drink. Just wondered if anybody knows what price the sunday club is, the roast dinner and drink? i've seen prices different prices on the web fron 3.50 to 5.50 but there old posts. I just received a telemarketing call from a company called Elite Health Care, web address for anyone interested is www.elitehealthcareinc.com. Anyway, I shamefully admit I am still too gullible and this "plan" just sounds WAY too good to be true. $99.95 a month for BOTH David and I simply because we reside in the same household. We're still not yet married so nor are we considered "family" with most actual medical health insurance providers, BUT, this company says we ARE family, again because we live together. Please keep in mind, "Dru" (the verifier of the phone call) was ADAMANT about making sure I understood that this is NOT insurance. However, I save 60% on Dr.'s visits, total FREE dental and visual, and NO CAP on hospital visits. Somebody, somehow please help me understand this... Thanks in advance! more

Hello All, I have reccently discovered Microsoft Frontpage and I think it's much much much easier than making a website in NotePad using multiple codes. My web design teacher informed me that you can download a free 90 day trial of Microsoft Frontpage but I'm not exactly sure where to find this download!! can anyone help me find a free trial download of Microsoft Frontpage? Resolved Question: Average Web Designing Pay?

I've always been interested in IT, and have taken a few classes in IT. I really enjoyed my HTML classes and web design stuff. I've been looking at salary's and they seem to run between 35-80k a year, which is a pretty big gap. I've also noticed that there are several free lance websites where people can make up to 10s of thousands of dollars for creating a single site. My question is, if that kind of free lance work is available, why do so many designers settle for the 40k salary? Are the free lance sites mostly bull or something? And how much money can I really expect to make if I were to get my degree in web designing, could I do better with free lance, or just stick to a salary kind of job? A lot of questions I know, but any answers help. Thanks much :) more
