Open Question: Which business idea should I go for?
Over the summer, I would like to start an online business. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I am limited on cash for the start-up however. I have two ideas that I think have a lot of potential. Which idea should I choose? 1. A website where users can submit original songs (with copyright info for protection) and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with users. Users could also create a main page where they could post info, and find new band members with the band member finder. I would have contests throughout the site for users to enter. I would make money from selling ad space. Joining the site would be free, but if the site becomes big enough, i would add a pro membership where you get extra features. I think this idea is great since there is not much competition other than www.purevolume.com, and it would be a great way for bands, artists, and musicians to promote themselves and get feedback. Who knows, maybe a record label executive might wander around the site and find some hot new act. They could be the next big thing. The only problem with this site is that it would cost me 40-50 thousand to create using a web design firm. I just dont have that kind of money to spend right now. How should I go about creating the site? I have no coding knowledge. Should I hire a coder/designer/developer from elance or something like that? What would that cost? Would it be effective. Should I create the site with dreamweaver or drupal or wordpress? 2. My second idea is a website where users can list, sell, buy, auction, and trade websites. Sign up would be free and a user could list the website with info, and place a snapshot of the site. They would choose to either auction, sell, or trade the site. Once they sell the site, I would take a small 4% fee from the final sale. I would also sell ad space on the site. This site might be easier to build than the music site. However, i got quoted 30-40k to build the site from a web design firm. Again, should I hire someone from elance or something? Which idea do you think is most profitable? Which idea should I do? How should I go about building the website? PS. To earn extra money, I am signing up as a dealer for Kaeser and Blair, which sells promotional products to companies (pens, golf tees, merchandise with company logos on them). As a dealer, I sell to my clients, and make 25-50% profit on all sales. Kaeser and Blair takes care of manufactureing and shipping. moreOpen Question: How should I go about creating a website like this?

Im 13. I want to start an online business over the summer. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I know that sounds crazy since im only 13, but its my ultimate goal. I have a few ideas for a business, but I'm not sure which ones are profitable, and which one I should do. 1. A website where users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. There will also be a page where users can keep track of their favorite songs, post info, and find new band members with the band member finder. I would make money from the site by selling ad space, and if the site gets really big, i could create a free and pro level membership (pro costs money). Pro members would get extra features. The problem is, since i have no coding or programming experience, I would have to hire a web design firm. A site like this, though, could cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, which I don't have! My other options are hire a coder/designer/programmer from elance for a nice price, or hire my cousin who is at RIT for web design and programming. I think this idea could be profitable. There is not really competition execpt for www.purevolume.com I like this idea a lot! 2. A website where I would sell musical instruments. I would buy the instruments from a wholesale/dropship company and when i get an order, i give the order to the company who will send the item to the customer. I would buy them wholesale and sell them for profit. I, however, think this business is bad since i would be competing with guitar center, sam ash, www.musiciansfriend.com, amazon, ebay, and more. 3. There is a website called www.remote-backup.com. They provide people options to start their own business providing online backup services. They sell you a license to sell their software for $750 and you re sell the software on your site. You could charge a customer $25 a month for 10 gb of storage, and you would make some profit. Many people lose data everyday from viruses, hard drive crashes, theft, etc. This business would provide a solution. But, some huge competitors are mozy and snapfish and verizon's new storage service. This could end up costing me 750 for nothing in return. 4. A website where a user can start/create a debate on two topics such as mcdonalds vs burger king. Other users can join the debate by posting arguments under the side they think is better. Example, if i like mcdonalds better then burger king, i post my reasons under the mcdonalds column for why i think it is better. This site could be usefull for many people such as shoppers who want to know what brand they should buy. I would sell ad space for this site. 5. I was reading Small Business Opportunities SBO Magazine, and they had a huge article on a new business opportunity. It is a company called www.resellerdynamics.com. They have a software that lets customers create their own website. They custom brand the software and give you liscense to resell the software for only $999. Once you pay you get a resellers liscense to sell the software, a custom website/hostin/and domain to promote the software to potential customers. You could charge $30 a month for the software and resllerdynamics only takes $10 for server stuff. thats $20 profit a month per customer. If you have 400 customers paying you $20 bucks a month, thats around $100,000 a year! This company is not a scam or pyramid scheme since I called the local BBB Better Business Beraue of the location, and they say the company has good reputations. I like this idea a lot since small business are looking for cheap ways to get a nice website up and running. 6. This last idea is one of my favorites. It would be a website/marketplace where people could buy/trade/sell/auction websites. The user could post a picture of the website, post info, and chose to either sell the site for a flat price, or start an auction for the site by placing a base price. There are already some sites that do this, but they are not that good function wise. www.sitepoint.com does have a feature where you could buy and sell websites, but that is not their main focus. I would make money from selling ad space, and charging the poster a small fee once a sale has been completed. I would hire my cousin to create this site, since it would not be hard to create since many auction and marketplace scripts are out their. Which ideas do you think are most profitable? Which idea should I do? I love the music sharing site, website reseller, and the website marketplace idea (which is my favorite). Even if you think none of these are profitable, what would you pick if you had to choose? Thanks! moreOpen Question: Which website idea should I pick?

I am a web-designer. About 6 months ago, I offered to help out some friends who have an investment company and re-vamp their website for them, free of charge. (They were good friends and I was just re-vamping a little- so I just offered to help them out). Since then, the website has grown to over 4500 members (When I started there were less than 300 and grew to over 4500 in a matter of 3 months). When they built the site- they used a hosting company that had pre-made templates to use with modules (for forums etc..) Since I am a web-developer and their pre-made template was HORRIBLE, I offered to help them out and re-vamp the template they had with some CSS over-rides. Great. Now they are looking to expand even more, and are requesting that I do some more with the site. I have told them they need a new system and to get off the current pre-made hosting they have (they cant upload files to a file manager etc.. it's VERY limited what can be done). The modules they are provided are not meant to keep up with sites with as large a membership as theirs. So my question is this- I have a job, a family and I'm in school. It basically has gone from a few things here and there- to a full time web admin job.. only I'm not getting paid anything. What is the best way to approach this with the owners? I cannot keep putting in this many hours for them, it's taking away from me making money at my own business....... (1) Just walk away and tell them I cannot do it anymore (2) Ask for some compensation (and if so- what do I ask for? normal hourly rate? or just something- after-all i did offer in the beginning to just do it) (3) Continue to help them for free- and keep my mouth shutThanks so much for the great advice so far! I broke the one rule I was taught by a mentor, "Once you decide to take on web-design as a job.. NEVER do anything for free- even for friends and/or family" =) They live in different states, so an in-person sit down meeting is most likely out of the question. I will schedule a phone call with them though =) moreVoting Question: where can i get royalty free military photos?

Im 13. Over the summer, I want to start an online business. My ultimate goal is to make six or more figures a year (become financially independent). It will make money from selling ad space. I like this idea, but i have another idea that could be more profitable even though it has much more competition. The idea is a website where users can store their digital photos. I still have to do some more research on this idea though. Users would either buy a free use (2gb worth of storage), a $4.98 monthly fee with a lot more gb of storage, or a yearly fee for $51.99 with a lot more storage than that. I would either hire a web design firm to create the site, or have my cousin, who is a web designer, create the site. I would have the site use a lot of security. some other features i could add to give me competitive advantage could be printing, editing, sharing, and other services all based around the digital photo storage service. Even though there are some huge competitors in this niche, I would start small, build a loyal customer base, and grow while making nice profits. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think it could eventually make me six or more figures a year? Should i do this idea? Thanks. PS. I have a business plan that needs a website. But before it becomes profitable I will need to be able show how it works to potential customers. If it is successful I will be able to pay in full but until then I can't. So how do I find a developer who will take this risk? Try to find friends of friends who wouldn't mind? college students trying to add to their portfolio? a freelancer who would be willing to take a risk? or......?Just to clarify, it isn't the complete website that I want done for free. I will just need a prototype of a web application to show potential customers what its benefits are, if they see as much potential as I do then the designer gets paid, but if the idea is shot down then no. Thanks Brandon for the offer but I would prefer to work with someone who I could talk to/meet up with regularly. You aren't based in Ireland by any chance? moreResolved Question: for website issue and copyrights?

I've been making free websites for friends and they love them. I have always been good in Art but would love to be professionally trained in making websites so that I can do it for businesses and make a little money. Where can I get such training? Also does Web Design also go along with another kind of course like Graphic Arts or something like that? Thanks!I am very good with computers and have been using HTML. I would also like to do Flash websites. I love computer art/graphics, so any kind of course that includes this. It wouldn't have to be with a college, a private school might be better. Depending on which training would help me get work. I would like to work from home... but don't have to. I just love computers and am good at Art so would love to have a job doing something I love. Even if it is a job I could only get work for occaisionally... not to make a living off of. moreResolved Question: How and where can I get a free laptop?
I am a young Cameroonian living in Cameroon. Due to the low income rate of my family I could no longer go to school. I am computer passionate and I am trying to teach myself web designing. I have to spend several hours on the internet everyday. This is very expensive for me as at times I get free EBook on the inter and I have to continue staying to read through and practice. Reading and practicing is actually what I need to if I wish to one day become a professional web designer. But what makes me need a laptop is the fact that even the time that I spend on this computer to read and practice is added to my bill by the person who owns the internet CAFE. this is too much for someone of my income level. i would very much appreciate any help from any direction. If I can get a laptop i'll only pay for the few mins that I use to get the EBook and other material for my studies. And i'll be able to go back home and concentrate in a more calm environment where i can study and practice for as long as my brain can take for a day. Can anyone help me out here???????????? SOS moreResolved Question: Friendship dilemma! I need a little advice..?
I'm having a little friendship trouble and would appreciate some advice. Thank you in advance! Warning: This is long.. I was helping a friend make a webpage for free. I did 99.9% of the work and her 0.1% contribution was to suggest a few design details. The webpage is basically finished with just few little changes left to be made. I also spent many hours helping her out with a presentation she had to do and I did these things because I had time and didn't mind helping her out. So far she has done nothing in return except annoy the hell out of me. It all started when we had an argument about something unrelated and ridiculous which caused us to stop hanging out with each other for a couple of weeks. I then tried to call her a couple of times and left a voicemail saying that I wanted to make up and talk it out, but she just sent me text that said "No I'm busy". Then out of the blue she leaves me a curt voicemail asking me why I hadn't gotten the changes done on her webpage and basically goes on to list all of the things that she wants changed and all the things she wants added with no mention of talking about our friendship. So today, we exchanged some texts which went like this: Me: Hey, I don't feel comfortable about doing anymore work for free until we talk. Sorry it just makes me feel taken advatanged of. Her: I'm not using you for it. It's not in my nature to use ppl. That hurts you would offend me that way! Me: It's not in my nature to offend ppl either but you see me as offending you and I see you as taking advantage of me when you don't call me back to talk because I wanted us to make up, and you call expecting me to do more work for you for free when you know we are still in bad terms. I know you are busy but you should call me to talk first before asking me to do things for you because i find THAT offensive. Her: I said I'd pay. (she never did say this) Me: For what? I said I would do it for free bc you were a friend. But if you don't want to be friends then I don't know what I'm doing it for. If you want to switch this to just strictly a business relationship and not be friends then I'm still not going to take your money. It would be better for you to hire someone else to make your page. Her: Well theres no one else I know who makes webpages. Me: Are you saying you want a strictly business relationship and not be friends? Her: Guess so? Me: So find someone else to make your webpage. Her: Email me the files then. I'll find someone else to finish it. Stop texting right now I'm busy. Me: No hire another web designer. Was I wrong? I've never been in such a complicated and ridiculous situation with a friend. I'm really hurt that after everything I did for her, she treats me this way like I'm obligated to do these things for her. Any recommendations as to what I should do? Should I just be the better person and send her the files that are already finished? moreVoting Question: Business name for web design company?

I am using a web designer's XHTML/CSS template for my personal website. His templates are free, but I would like to make a donation to support his work. Can anyone suggest what would be an appropriate amount? FWIW, - these are not hack HTML jobs, they are professionally done, standards-based XHTML/CSS, no tables for layouts - I don't make money on my site - I plan to keep a link on my site pointing to the designer's site, even after donating - I've only used one of his templates, but may use others in the future moreResolved Question: Is this illegal.....?
I'm a web designer and on my website I've got a notice saying "The next quote we get will get their website for free" and from this I get lots of quotes then once I get talking to the customers I say "I'm sorry but the free website has already been done so I'm going to have to charge you" and because they have already spoken to me they will generally hire me anyhow. So I got a new job as a Web Designer, and I E-Mail with my co-workers proofs and files for websites, most of which are under 5mb (our email servers limits) But If I need to email some files (like .eps logos [typcially 10-15mb]) They are too large. What is a good, FREE, SECURE (maybe password protected..? :) ) file sharing website, where I can upload files, and they can download them.Robin, you seem to miss the issue. Yea i am trying to design a websites and i want to know if i can find any advanced web designing programs out there. And i don't mean like C++, java, perl..... Thanks moreResolved Question: Starting a website.. Help!?
I'm needing a website for my photography business. I'm not super great with things like that, but I figured I could learn. I was under the impression that it was really easy to build a site. I thought you could to through a host or whatnot and make your domain, choose a template, and start posting portfolios and info. When I read a few articles on business sites, however, it seemed really complicated. They made it sound like you had to buy a domain, then hire a firm or web designer to build and run your site. It seems like you have to be a master of photoshop to customize anything on it! I found a site (www.webs.com) which seems pretty simple. I made a free site to start with and it looks pretty good. I have to purchase a package of course to actually have a domain and all that good stuff. Is this a good idea? Is it better to have a person make it for you? This is a college town, so finding someone to run the site fairly cheap wouldn't be a problem. If I can make and maintain a site through a web design site, which should I use? I'm looking to pay no more than about $20 a month. I know I sound silly/clueless, but any advice would be greatly appreciated! moreVoting Question: how long does it takes to be a web designer?
Well, I am a college student with architecture as a major, but lately I been having issues on looking for a job.I currently have a part-time, but it does not provide an enough salary to be able to keep with living expenses AND college expenses. This is why I decided to take a shorter career, tho I am still a bit unsure of which one to take. I am leaning more towards to web design since I took a few courses back in high school,so I have the basic idea of how web design works. So my questions for now will be: -how long does it take to become a web designer? -what is the average salary? -are there any online courses you guys can recommend me(free or paid)? thanx in advance,I am looking forward to your answers cheers =)@ pete: I know, I am not dropping architecture, rather I will just "pause" it. Takes bout 6 years to become a good architect(since I am aiming for Master's degree), so I just decided to get a shorter career for now so I could generate more money that way. The part-time job I currently have is not able to help me maintain living expenses and college expenses.I been looking for a better job for months and haven't been able to find one, so my best choice would be study for a short career to get more money don't u think? moreResolved Question: I recently had a web designer make me a website..?

I'm a graphic designer and I want all my work to be safe when i do ads for companies etc. Is using free web stuff allowed? I know...I know... It's the ideal program for PROFESSIONAL photographers, web designers, and graphic designers, but still I'm not entirely sure if that's even a plausible reason as to why it cost so much -_- I mean, I've used GIMP before and that works pretty well for me, and I'm assuming that photoshop does a lot more crap than GIMP to make it cost so much? Another thing that grinds my gears big time...how are people getting this program for free...without getting viruses?! I hate people telling me "Oh, I use photoshop....but I got it for free and illegally, shhh" No, forget that >.> (Yeah I'm jealous of all you lucky sons of ____. lol) So yeah, someone explain this to me. I am about to start a new website that is like a forum/online community. I don't know much about websites, and definitely nothing about the language.
