Open Question: MA in Marketing or Advertising v MBA--which is better?

I graduated from college in 2008 with a BA in Political Science. I've worked in two law firms as a legal assistant and now work for a business that recently started. It's great being part of a business and watching it grow from the ground up. It's also fun helping to decide how products should be marketed and advertised. It's definitely inspired me to go into business, but I'm not sure which route would be best...MA in Advertising or MA in Marketing, and do both pale in comparison to an MBA? Either way, I'm taking up graphic design as a hobby. I've got ideas on how to present products and want to play around with that in my free time. more

Voting Question: Cho Yung Tea and Colon Cleanser Scam!?

Just wondering how may other people have fell for the scam? And have lost money!? Just lately there have been a lot of private sellers and several business sellers advertising a so called slimming product I thought I should warn you what I have found out from personal research about this so called "amazing" product. A lot of private sellers are selling this because they have been stung by a website on the interenet ,I know this for a fact because I was also silly enough to buy into it.Being desperate to loose weight after having my son and having tried almost every method you can name I stumbeled accross an advert on the internet for a free trial of this amazing product cho yung tea ,it looked ligit sounded great so I signed up agreeing to pay only £1.99 in postage to get a months "FREE" trial, in due course my tea came and I started it eagerley . Now firstly you need to know this is NOT a free trial as I later found out way too late, just over a month after I had my tea. The people at cho yung tea then took my bank details and used them to do there flamin' shopping in Israel via my debit card money, I did not authorise them to take any money apart from the P+P for my "FREE TRIAL" to be sent to me. I was lucky enough for my bank to notice it so they contacted me straight away and gave me my money back and got there Fraud Squad on to it. On doing further research I discovered a whole heap of people on the web who too had been conned by these people some loosing as much AS £48 - £72.50 "a packet of tea" .There is a link on Martins money saving tips website about this (the guy off the tv who exposes people like this). Now I don't begrudge these people who have, like me,been ripped off ,selling this tea to try and get their money back but what I do object to and wanted to warn others about is what Ive since discovered about the tea. It contains powerful laxatives which give you dirrohea and mess with your stomach and bowels ,yes you will loose weight at first but this is due to it literally dehydrating your body of neccessary water!!I Have this on the advise of my GP. It claims to reduce bloating but after a month of being on it you WILL bloat ,you very well may, like me,get incredible stomach pain, you may feel sick and tierd all the time, your breath may begin to smell foul and your tounge may grow a coating as the stomach lining is actually broken down by this foul stuff. All of this happened to me when I drank the stuff ,it also has stuff in it to get you addicted to drinking it. None of these things are mentioned on the packet or on the website or in sellers listings . I lost quite a bit of weight but then it stopped and I started getting ill, blood in the motions, incredible pain in the abdomen etc etc .People, it simply isn't worth it .please please please if you are thinking of getting this stuff ask your Gp about the stuff in its ingredients and be careful. Trading standards are looking into loads of complaints about people not only being ripped off moneywise by this thieving company but also people being ill because of the stuff in this tea something I've not seen any seller yet admit to. Please people DONT BUY THIS STUFF. These are the sites that led me to the tea - Hope anyone reading this hasnt fell for it. mumsweightloss.co.uk http://www.choyung-tea.co.uk http://www.prohealthcleanse.com more

Resolved Question: please read the below article and tell me the quality of english 1. very bad 2. ok 3. good?

How to use Internet Marketing. In todays competitve world where there is no time even to read a newspaper completely, all at one stop seems to be the solution. People just want to pose the problem and ‘kablam’- the answer. This can be achieved only through a media where solutions meet at one place - Internet. Since Internet seems to be the most preferred search answer domain, it is inevitable for industries to reach their hands in there too. So how to use Internet Marketing? Simple, people type in their queries in Google and the search engine brings in all results containing the keywords. Hence the basic practical point is to create a website for the central product. Secondly, social networking sites are the new-ins. So...? Create groups connect with people and post the advertisement. Not only will Google match the keywords, people will explore all horizons to the posted material. Also SMTP can be used to send e-mail to multiple recipients. Hence send e-mail with attractive subject lines which catch eyes. Professional link building tool can also be used so that the product get displayed in searches related to publics query Also video is something which people are interested in seeing. Hence start with something spicy and then start advertising the product. The start should be like comedy for example so that people dont lose interest and may also rate the video which in turn would attract other people to watch them. Social sites like Facebook, Orkut etc have video library facility. Hence post them in your account. This would help other people related to you (friends) see the updates. Also you can go to sites which have blogs and questions answered. E.g., yahooanswers, wiki snwers etc are where people pose question. Post suitable interesting answers and give hyperlink to the catchy words to the product to be marketed. Hence when the individual clicks the link he is directed to product advertisement. Get yourselves registered to sms sites which provide free sms services. Write short and sweet advertisement for the product and send them as sms’s to the recepients. Dont forget to give contact id. All these takes a little bit of hard work and research but the work does pay off. Dont loose hope, carefully seleect your audience and impress them with the promises the product has. more

Voting Question: what is a good product to really, honestly re-grow hair?

i am a woman, age 26, and i've lost a lot of my hair due to a gluten/casein/wheat/all those lovely things allergy. i cut my hair short like a pixie because so much of it was damaged and brittle from that exposure. and now, i want to start the process of growing it out long again. is there a product that can really help you re-grow hair, and i'm not talking about ones that just do it for the day, or make it feel like you have considerable re-growth. i can't afford some kind of expensive surgical procedure, but there's got to be something out there. rogaine is advertised a lot, but so is everything in this world. thoughts? suggestions? ps, obviously i'm on a gluten free/wheat free/casein free diet now. :-) more

Voting Question: Why does Youtube keep saying that people are infringing copyrights?

Most things on youtube aren't directly made by the people who post them. But that doesn't mean they're gonna claim that they made the music and everything. Youtube is great for advertising for free. But with stupid companies like Viacom and Sony that keep deleting stuff, and Youtube getting more and more commercials, Youtube is just going to get more and more annoying for users. I mean when you see a video of pictures put together with a song in the background its pretty much assumed that you weren't the one who made the song unless otherwise noted. Anyways, like the guy who made the 5 second summaries of movies. Why is he suspended? His videos were like 15 seconds long.. with like 5 seconds of actual content which he edited together himself. If youtube is saying that you cant even post things you edited, then the majority of youtube needs to be suspended. Its just so ridiculous and stupid. Sites like youtube are a way a lot of people find out about new music and everything since they usually wont find it (or wont find it as easily) on TV or the radio. and then you can sample out songs from an album before buying it. if we didnt have sites like youtube and we had to all rely on tv and the radio then the 2000s wouldnt have had people with such a large range of music tastes. its why like when we think to the past decade we cant think of a specific music trend to define the whole decade. cause it was able to branch out and people found what was really their favorite. whether its contemporary music or music from the past. Anyways, I dont think Youtube is on the right path right now. And if they're gonna have commercials they might as well make them varied.. I hate seeing the same thing over and over. thats not gonna make me wanna buy the product, it will make me want to AVOID it cause when i see it at the stores now i'll be reminded of my annoyance w/ the commercials and not want to get it. And whats next for youtube? making you pay for using the service? i really hope not cause theres nothing else online to go to that has as much a variety & user base as youtube. Im pretty sure Im not the only one who is pissed right now. You?And then when a lot of music companies delete the videos people uploaded of a certain band in their label, they post the video themselves and it has annoying commercials and is slow. so whenever i'm looking for a quick way to listen to a song and view the video, i avoid the things uploaded by major company accounts. its not that i hate the companies for being on youtube.. its just the slowness & commercials that bother me. and all the crazyness with things being deleted that were posted from tv, or have a certain song in it.. its just ridiculous. most people credit the songs & shows too, but they still get deleted! like what the hell, its free promotion! We've all heard of bands that got promoted through fans telling their friends and posting their music on youtube, myspace, limewire, etc. and then become really famous before they are even in a label. without those things.. then the record companies would be choosing the songs for us to listen, NOT us. which i dont like. more

Voting Question: irritated with spouse?

I am working on opening a business, and at this exact moment I don't have the money to pay for the final touches. Not a problem I will just have to wait a lil bit longer. However I can still use free advertising venues such as twitter an facebook ETC . to promote the (Grand Opening soon ! ) of my business. My spouse is so thick headed, he doesn't take my endeavor serious. ! he thinks I am just screwing around on the computer ( ok, maybe at this exact moment Yes) but it is ticking me off. He just wants me to be a dead head house wife! And basically said so in not so many words. A little about what I accomplished so far : I have managed to land an account with a major manufacture of products. got a website built, managed to set up all the shipping and handling procedures. there is 50 thousand products ...YIKES I still have to pay some last minute graphic stuff and that is what is holding me back. And I am setting myself up to play ball with the big boys petco & petsmart but my spouse just doesn't get it . I am excited , but he isn't. An my spouse thinks I am just farting around. Resolved Question: Question for Libertarians - How do you regulate the free-market?

I respect many libertarian ideals, but there's one issue that stops me from joining the ranks - regulation of industry. History has shown that an unregulated free-market creates dangerous products. It also promotes false and misleading advertising. Many unregulated industries create dangerous levels of pollution. How does libertarianism address these problems?@ schnizzle - I'm not sure what you're talking about, but if you have some insight into my question I'd appreciate an answer.@ planters - You have a point. But have you ever considered the possibility that the number of dangerous products on the market would be far greater without regulation? Just because some dangerous products exits, doesn't mean regulation is ineffective - it means regulation is not perfect.@ The pollution argument - If a company over-pollutes and causes everything west of the factory to be covered in soot & ash, I could boycott their product. But everybody to the north, south and east of the factory would be unaffected by the pollution and would not have the same motivation to boycott. I would be stuck living in a polluted area because the company was satisfying enough consumers to remain profitable. more

Resolved Question: Is there any tea with wheat protein?

I was in the grocery store stocking up on Lemon Zinger and Earl Grey and I noticed a lot of teas which advertised themselves as Gluten-Free. Is that all a marketing gimmick or has someone added wheat protein to their product and where can I get it? I WILL give a best answer.I suggest you look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten-free_diet I spelled Gluten-free as I saw it in the store and that has one meaning. I've made Gluten patties following the instructions in the Whole Earth Catalog and in Jethro Kloss's Return to Eden Cookbook. I know what it is and I love it. more

Resolved Question: At last I finally found a way to make good money with online roulette. What do you think?

The system I came across is an affiliate roulette system where you have a site with a roulette product that you would either sell or give away free. Then on your site you would also have online gambling sites with advertising that your visitors can click on, and with each click you automatically get paid. Check it out here and see if I should try this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5nWapxT6cw&feature=fvwHi CJLove, They haven't asked me for any money, but I feel I can find some gambling products on Clickbank and see if I can affiliate with some online casinos and make affiliate money that way. Voting Question: Resume and Cover Letter Writing - Technical Terms Thank Can Be Mistaken For Typographical Errors?

Hi, I am a recent college graduate who after a year of post graduate internet enteprenuerhip am having to look elsewhere to for income due to a lack of sales and advertising revenue. My internet ventures were also my first job and I am now looking to include my year of web development and database design experience in my resume and cover letters. I have hit snag in adding some technical names referring to specific development tools. This is because some of these names when spelled correctly (ex: "OpenSocial") can appear to the untrained eye as a typographical error (ex: they think "OpenSocial" should by "Open Social"). This is not huge concern of mine if the reader is qualified to evaluate these technical aspects, but I fear it could be a disaster if sent to the human resources department of a large company. My fear comes from the typical skill set of people who work in human resources. Their resume's (ex: http://www.bestsampleresume.com/sample-human-resources-resume/sample-human-resources-resume-1.html) typically do not include the necessary technical experience to know what some terms even mean let alone if they are spelled correctly. Take a look at the following : - OpenSocial API - JavaScript - ObjectDataSource To the untrained eye this could look like four typographical errors occurred due to missing spaces when in fact it is an error free list of useful skills. The first being a way to promote products by creating embeddable devices using a standard format supported by most social networking sites, the second being a scripting language commonly used to improve user interfaces, and the third being a way to restrict access for different sections of a database to authorized people. How should I structure the technical names on my resume that consist of two or more words combined with capital letters in the middle? more

Resolved Question: I am on the Red Bull is that good?

I am 16yrs old male and recently I have been on a diet. I drink a medium can of Sugar Free Red Bull, and I figured it does the trick! I am very drained of energy when I come from school and go straight to the gym, and run for an hour straight. I tried all the caffeine stuff, like green tea coffee, and coffee. Nothing works better than this at only 15 calories. I don't want to eat much at all and I skip school lunch, which is packed with carbs and is over 500 calories. So can you please tell if there are any bad side effects and most importantly does it effect growth. I have lost 20 pounds in a month and want to maintain that amount of weight loss in the future. Resolved Question: Has anyone tried to get the $2000 in free grocery vouchers they are advertising on the radio?

I have heard this ad a bunch of times in the last couple months. There's a consumer marketing company called Nelson Research Group that is offering $2000 in free grocery vouchers that they say you can use at any local or national grocery store. All they ask in return is that you tell them what products you purchased. It sounds too good to be true so I thought I'd see if anyone has tried it and had success or not. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: what do you think of my essay?

Right, so i'm 13 and i'm doing my english GCSE a year early. this is my first EVER essay on media and its about two advertisements for two different perfumes found in Bliss Magazine. I know its rubbish, you dont need to tell me that. haha. if you could give me any suggestions on how to improve/constructive critizism/corrections on punctuation etc. pleaaase help me. thank you. SORRY ITS SO LENGTHY.. YOU DONT NEED TO READ IT ALL. THANKS. Following your close study on Bliss, comment on and compare advertisement features within the magazine that you feel are successful The publishers of Bliss magazine obviously have a clear idea of their target audience. Not only do the bright, girly colours and photographs of current and popular celebrities suggest that it is aimed at teenage girls but also the name 'bliss'- meaning extreme happiness, suggests femininity and youth. The magazine is most likely aimed at females in there early adolescent years and possibly even preteens; perhaps with ages varied between twelve and fifteen. They also know that it is important to appeal to the target audience and so have used a wide range of presentational features to ensure this is achievable; some of these include the colour scheme, lay-out, fonts and images. All of the devices used are not only suitable for the Bliss readers, but also for the purpose of the magazine which is to entertain, give advice, advertise and ultimately sell. The content usually includes pages based on celebrity gossip, news, fashion tips, interviews and “problem pages” all of which have been designed for the purpose and target audience. Obviously, their main priority is to sell and so they approach the potential buyer bribing them with a “free gift”. They also design the front cover making sure the expensive price tag is the least eyecatching part and is over-powered by other feautures. Some would say that magazines such as Bliss can be quite misleading because they lure the shopper into buying it and are only interested in the money that they will be receiving. Another way that the company attempts to increase their profits is by advertising. In the December issue of Bliss Magazine that we have previously studied, two similar advertisements are displayed, both of which are trying to appeal to the same target audience as Bliss Magazine itself which is why they have chosen to advertise in this particular area of the media. The first advertisement is for Avril Lavigne’s perfume “Black star”. Already, the name suggests a lot about the product. For example; you would imagine it to be gothic and dark because those are the connotations of the colour black. Despite the gothic style, pink is used in the colour scheme to make sure that it can appeal to more than just one group of people and produce more sales. Pink is also a typical feminine colour and so is suitable for the target audience. The name “black star” contradicts itself because stars are never usually described as black, therefore creating a sense of uniqueness and individuality which is something many teenagers aspire to be. The wording “be your own star”, tells the reader that buying the perfume can help you to become everything you want to be, therefore making it very persuasive. They also do this by styling Avril Lavigne to look like her perfume bottle. She models a short pink dress with finishing touches including a studded belt, fish net tights and a shinny, silver bangle and is posed to look powerful which breaks the weak and innocent stereotype of a typical girl. Similarly, the bottle is pink and shaped like the dress with a black, star shaped lid which reflects the belt that she is wearing. By mirroring the perfume bottle in her clothes and accessories, it suggests to the target audience that by wearing the perfume, they too can be like Avril Lavigne. The second of the two advertisements is about Coleen Rooney’s perfume. It has been styled carefully to look sophisticated and elegant. By using shades of purple rather than pink, it is still able to attract girls but looks more mature and grown up. The advertisement displays a photograph of Coleen, showing her slim, attractive outline and is airbrushed to make her look “perfect”. The contrast of Coleen against outlines of dancers in the background gives the impression of her “standing out”. Like Avril Lavignes perfume, the bottle is very similarly designed to mirror Coleen’s dress. Both Coleen and the bottle are plain black and very graceful. The positioning of the perfume on the advertisement feature stands slightly behind the photograph of Coleen and is larger than her. By doing this, it familiarises the audience with the product so they know what to look for when buying it. Written on the bottle is “Coleen x” in a handwriting style font and a “kiss” symbol to add a personal touch and a sense of trust and sharing. The products that are being advertised are both quite similar, however; although the target audiences a more

Right, so i've already posted a question about my media essay about two advertisments in Bliss Magazine - Avril Lavigne and Colleen Rooney's perfumes. However, i didn't seem to ask it very well. So here i go again: This is my INTRODUCTION and the start of the body of my essay. I can't use P.E.E because there is very little writing on the advertisements and so i can't quote it very well. Voting Question: Is it possible to standardize advertising in global markets?

If a company wanted to go global with their product, would they first look for similarities in their own and the foreign market and try to standardize the advertising as much as possible in order to save money or would they try to adapt to the foreign market first? Which makes more sense, looking for similarities first or just realizing straight away that the cultures are so different that you would get better results if you tailored the advertising message to the market? Is there such a thing as a completely culture free product? Sorry I'm so confused. We'll write an exam in our marketing class on the topic in march and I found different information on the web. Many sites said that the standardization thing is an old approach and that it doesn't work as well as adaptation. On the other hand...aren't most perfume ads the same in each country? more

Resolved Question: Currys UK, can I take my product back to ANY currys store? or the exact one I bought it from?

Hi, I bought a camcorder from a currys in my local town (nightmare to park! costs a fortune), which is soon shutting down. I only bought it from there because the other currys in my town (in an industrial estate with free parking/easy access) didn't have what I wanted in stock. I bought it last weekend, can I take it back to ANY currys store, or does it have to be taken back to the exact store I bought it from? I have already phoned the customer service phone line, and as usual no one seems to know their own job anymore. It's got a dead/stuck/hot pixel, and I am NOT happy. I was NOT made aware of this when purchasing it, and it says nothing about it in the manual. Also under the 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979' that products bought should be: As described - refers to any advert or verbal description made by the trader. Satisfactory quality - covers minor and cosmetic defects as well as substantial problems. It also means that products must last a reasonable time. But it doesn't give you any rights if a fault was obvious or pointed out to you at point of sale. I was NOT made aware at time of purchase that camcorders often have a pixel problem, so I see this as false advertising and I want my money back, if camcorders are known to have a pixel or two missing/stuck then why was I not told this at time of purchase. (I put all this extra crap info in because I know there is always some smart bum who will go on about it, even though that wasn't the original question!). Thank you. PS, the reviews online for currys are pretty poor, most people saying they refuse to refund/exchange even though it states on the back of the receipt: If the product is faulty within the first 28 days you are entitled to a refund or exchange. If a fault occurs any time after that period, you are entitled to have the product repaired.Hi, thank you both for your replies so far. bouncer bobtail, you said 'Curry's will repackage it and sell it as new to some other poor sap.' and it's funny you should say that. Because went into the shop to get it for me, I noticed once she got in the car that there was no seal on the box at all, I always thought electrical goods were sealed? So now I am wondering if someone had already had it/tampered with it before me! I am going back to Currys tomorrow with my mum. My mum tried taking it back to the original store today, and the ignorant bloke refused there was a dead/hot/stuck pixel and refused to refund, he made my mum feel so small she had to leave the shop. more

Resolved Question: Do you agree that it is easy to feel powerless?

What the older generation may not yet understand is that our generation's problem is that we do not lack ideals; we suffer from an excess of them. We are not unaware of important causes, we are starving for a way to realize them. So companies prey on our starvation. They offer us a product to satiate our need for community, for purpose. We take our ideals and become the generation of Whole Foods-shoppers, Prius-drivers and American Apparel-clothes wearers. We show off our causes gladly on our Facebook page and on our t-shirts. Not only have we been sold our ideals back to us in the form of the shoes we buy and the coffee we drink, we are conscious of how our very passion is being co-opted. And still we do it, because we crave an imaginary community over no community. Some will say that as long as we must buy things in this economy, why not buy whatever is organic, fair trade, sweatshop-free, environmentally friendly, free range? But Do we need to support the most corrupt of companies and their labor practices? We do not hope to answer those questions. Rather we need to acknowledge that the real problem is this: consumption is now framed as a question of what causes we support, what communities we are involved in. This is the opposite of the commodity fetish that hid social relations beneath the veneer of objects. Now commodities must advertise the social relations we wish to be part of. Thus, it is easy to feel powerless, not merely because we are disenchanted with traditional activism and its results, but because our desire for collectivity has been displaced onto the realm of things, away from our material existence. We do too many things to show we care about this world; we do everything except come together to change it. more

Resolved Question: Does anyone feel Netbanner Ads are invading your privacy?

I've been doing some marketing for awhile now, and came across Netbannerads.com - Actually, they had e-mailed me and let me know that I may not have some keyword on my site, etc. After speaking with someone over there, I asked how Google!, Yahoo, and MSN would allow them to have a website appear on top of their listings. This is where things get tricky. They deal with outsourced non-affiliate, non-partnering 'active x attacking' companies. Those companies install 3rd party software on your computer (Kind of like those annoying pop-up windows you mindlessly click 'ok' to). Once the software is installed, and you utilize Google!, Yahoo, or MSN to search for something, the 3rd party software will display the person owning the 'keyword's website on TOP of the search listings. More in depth > If I search for "Toyota", in stead of getting Toyota's Advertisement First (Which I'm sure they paid good money for), I'll get Larry's Toyota Dealership in New Brunswick, NJ. appearing on top of everything, with my actual search listings far below this. I think there might even be some infringement here - not only on a user side, but on the policies governing advertising rights on these sites. If anyone can show a moral, or ethical stand point here that advises to use Netbannerads.com (absolving from the picture the marketing and money aspect of this) I'd be greatly appreciated. Also, in general, it's about $2000-$3000 a year to own a 'word' or 'phrase', which could be seen as many as 30,000 times a month, and clicked-free-of-charge. In comparison to Google!'s AdWords, which can cost up to $3 per click, and when you're looking to up #'s, and not to sell a product, Netbannerads.com seems VERY cost effective. more

Resolved Question: What are some free ways to advertise my affiliate marketing website?

I have absolutely no money right now to use for advertising my affiliate marketing website. I just paid a web designer to develop a coupon like site that promotes affiliate products, but I have not made any money on it yet (it's only a month old) and now I don't have money for advertising. What do you suggest I use for completely free advertising? more

Resolved Question: There are lot of websites advertising for online jobs ( net jobs ) which seems to be very interesting.?

But looks like internet scams, it says we have to fill surveys for multinational companies to improve sales on their new products, and we will receive cheques ( 5 to 50 US$ each ) in return. They say this is an easy job that you can do in your free times. To start we have to pay 75 US$ to the website owner, Please let me know whether this is genuine or a fraud! Resolved Question: Freedom of Speech, Truth in Lending, False Advertising- any common ground?

Our constitution grants us the right to free speech and that is in great part what has kept America strong. There have been several laws passed that protect consumers (or did until recently) such as Truth in Lending and False Advertising. These laws came about because of unscrupulous lenders and lies about products. We have always accepted our news people with respect and accepted their integrity as a given. However, it seems we are now being smothered with talk show host on radio and TV that do nothing but twist facts, rant and rave and complain about everyone and everything. They twist words, comments and events around to make them into something that they are not. If we can not expect the truth from the media then maybe we need to rethink our Freedom of Speech rights. Why can people like Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh be allowed to continue their twisted babbling and ranting? How can we expect the rest of the world to have any respect for America or for us to have any credibility when these radicals do nothing but bad mouth everything we do?Well done Pat Z; I agree with you 110%. My biggest concern are those who are easily led astray by the radical rantings. A talk show host in Nevada talks terribly close to insurection; a weak minded listener could very well end up trouble. more

Resolved Question: anyone out there who would like to explain this for me in simple terms?

All are free to dance and enjoy themselves, just as they have been free, since the historical neutralisation of religion, to join any of the innumerable sects. But freedom to choose an ideology – since ideology always reflects economic coercion – everywhere proves to be freedom to choose what is always the same. … The most intimate reactions of human beings have been so thoroughly reified that the idea of anything specific to themselves now persists only as an utterly abstract notion: personality scarcely signifies anything more than shining white teeth and freedom from body odour and emotions. The triumph of advertising in the culture industry is that consumers feel compelled to buy and use its products even though they see through them. more

Resolved Question: Are you sick of "green" everything?

Is anyone else sick of all these new products and businesses labeling themselves as green or eco-conscious or eco-whatever other little cutesy name they can think of. In most cases, they make a small, insignificant change, then go wild advertising their "social responsibility" I thought environmentalist movement was all about reduce, reuse, recycle. It was a movement dedicated to frugality and living with less. It seems to me like it's become another popular marketing catch phrase - like "fat free"@ mindshift: I'm not criticizing the environmental movement. I'm criticizing the advertisers and materialistic environmentalists. more

Resolved Question: Baby Einstein Scam !!!?

This makes me so happy... I have been saying this forever! http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/parenting/the-great-baby-einstein-scam-531147/ Of course it was too good to be true. The New York Times reported Thursday that Disney is offering a refund to buyers of its ubiquitous “Baby Einstein” videos, which did not, as promised, turn babies into wunderkinds. Apparently, all those puppets, bright colors, and songs were what we had feared all along—a mind-numbing way to occupy infants. This news has rocked the parenting world, which had embraced the videos as a miraculous child-rearing staple. Videos that make your kid smarter while you prepare dinner? Genius! Or not. According to the article, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under two years old stay away from watching screens. In the letter threatening Disney with a class-action lawsuit for "deceptive advertising," public health lawyers hired by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood cited a study which found a link between early television exposure and later problems with attention span. For many parents, this was the most unsettling of "duh" moments, and a confirmation that nothing, when it comes to child-rearing, is as ever easy as we'd like to make it. So why were we so quick to seize on Baby Einstein videos as technological tutors? Call it the perfect storm of parenting. Who doesn’t want to believe that there is a magical, wondrous, no-parental-guidance-required product that will turn their kids into Mensa members? The combination of our lack of time, our paranoia over our kids performance, and our faith in technology primed this generation of parents to accept the clever advertising around "Baby Einstein" as truth, just as parents before us have seized on corporal punishment, or the teachings of Dr. Spock. Still, the idea that a caper this big could be pulled off (according to the Times, in “a 2003 study, a third of all American babies from 6 months to 2 years old had at least one 'Baby Einstein' video") is mind-boggling. Disney’s refund is about as close as we’re going to get to an actual admission that we were sold snake oil, and it casts a pall over the other "educational" toys out there. more

Resolved Question: Do you also think that Google Home Biz is a scam?

So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully! So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam! Resolved Question: What alternatives are there to ZoneAlarm's program-filtering firewall?

I've been putting up with ZoneAlarm's nonsense for far too long. Upon starting my computer I am greeted with a large advertisement with two buttons, one of which opens up Firefox (to further lag my loading time) and the other of which usually doesn't respond for a minute or so. Furthermore, ZoneAlarm has this bad habit of blocking port 80 (HTTP, i.e. the internet as through web browsers) when web traffic gets too high or certain sites are visited (thorough searches from every adware, spyware, virus, etc. program I can get my hands on show nothing's wrong). This makes it so that when attempting to visit a website, the browser will continue "waiting" for it to respond until the cows come home. I have to restart to fix the problem. Even worse, if I do not restart immediately or I attempt to close and reopen Firefox (it says that firefox.exe is still running and I can't end the process) it freezes my computer and any attempt at a reboot fails - I have to hard reset using the power button. Fortunately, other ports are not blocked - IM clients, games, and whatnot continue to function. My IM buddies can attest to the fact that I constantly have to reboot my computer. This occurs at least on a daily basis and, frankly, I am tired of it. However, in other aspects, ZoneAlarm has served me well. For example, I have caught a few programs trying to sneak internet access at random times. Internet Explorer is one of them - even though I have never run IE on this computer, it regularly requests access about once every 5 seconds, which can cause problems when doing anything full screen. I ended up permanently blocking it for this reason and have pledged to myself never to use IE again. (I use Portable Firefox on other computers.) Adobe products of all sorts have the same problem - upon starting, they all demand access to the internet, even though none of them have any reason for doing so. Now, the program filtering is a necessary evil for me, but the advertising and the random port 80 blocking is too much. So, are there any (preferably free, but I won't be too hopeful) alternatives to this feature? I have searched all sorts of places but cannot seem to find anything. more

Resolved Question: Advice on what to do with advertising on my website?

I have made a website, which will soon be going live. It will be completely free to use, and solely an information website, but the information I will be providing will be very popular and the website will get loads of hits, I then want to offer banner space for advertising to other companies, but do I have to have it registered as a business to do this? If so, how do I go about that, as it will only be a website and wont be selling any products other than "banner space" ? Thanks Ant more
