Hi all, to cut a long story short, i am currently a student in secondary school and am thinking about what career path to take in future, i am very interested in studying languages ( mainly asian/oriental) i am planning to get started with learning chinese as a 'hobby' in my spare time, as a stepping stone if you wish however, as i am also planning to take a degree in university in languages, perhaps in more than one language, i would like to know what jobs are available for these types of languages.. i am not looking for a website that is advertising jobs, as these don't show me all types of language jobs that could be found for asian/oriental languages, (U.K) as i am fluent in my first language, english, i am also wondering if this could also help in further searches of jobs involving asian languages and english. any help would be appreciated, especially websites with jobs, or general advice, or websites that show the A-levels or qualifications i would need for certain jobs. thankyou in advance! more

The boss has given me a thick boilersuit to wear (with garage name on the back) and cheap leather external steel toe capped boots. which is very hot to wear in the hot weather and the boots are humiliating my mates laugh at my boots. Open Question: Wireless effect on broadband speed?

My broadband service provider for many years has been Virgin Media (Cable Operator). For the last 2 years I have been subscribed to 20Mbit download service and I managed to achieve approximately 14Mbit at my property using a laptop linked via a wireless router on 802.11g. Today I upgraded to 50Mbit download service whereby I also received a new 802.11n router and linked to a brand new top of the range Sony laptop with built in 802.11n wireless. After the installation, the technician linked my laptop directly to the modem via ethernet cable and visited speedtest.net to demonstrate that I was achieving the right results - it showed 52Mbit down and 1.8Mbit up, better than the advertised speed. Once he had gone I unplugged the laptop and reverted to wireless usage in 802.11n mode and repeated the speed test via the same site which showed 16Mbit down and 1.2Mbit up! I subsequently checked these results with other sites which pretty much mirrored the same levels. I since contacted Virgin Media and explained that when using the wireless router the download levels drop from 52 to 16 and end up little better than my previous 20Mbit service. They stated that this is normal as wireless does not allow the same transfer rates. My thinking is that yes, there are some factors which will reduce the level achieved via wireless such as signal strength, etc (mine is only 20 feet away from the router) but I find such a large drop excessive. Open Question: soundproofing a brick party wall-best method?

I have a brick built semi-detached house (solid walls not cavity) and want to soundproof a bedroom party wall due to noise coming through from next door. The approximate area is 8 sq metres. The wall is solid brick and plastered (not plasterboard). In forum discussion http://soundproofmyhome.com gave me 2 main options: 1) build an additional stud wall slightly out from the brick wall and use an acoustic insulation material in the stud wall, then plasterboard over. The problem with this is that it steals about 5-6 inches from the room size which I really can't afford to lose. 2) Use acoustic panels (Acousticel M20AD 20mm are the ones I've seen most commonly advertised), which are glued to the wall and then covered with 2 layers of 12.5mm plasterboard. This takes up no more than 2 inches of space, and is a lot cheaper too. I understand this is less effective than option 1), but the noise coming through is just general (TV, voices, walking on wooden floors, and not heavy bass etc), so this would seem to do the job and is my preferred option. Does anyone have any experience of installing/using these panels and are there any snags? Or other alternatives? Typical price seems to be about £28 per sq m plus VAT. more

Open Question: Recording Hi-Res PS3 Gameplay Footage?

Recently, I pre-ordered Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for the PS3, and got access to the pre-order Beta. Now, I figured I'm fairly lucky getting accepted (There's a limited amount of Beta codes available), and I though that the internet might like to be involved. So, what I want to do is record my gameplay footage from the Beta and stick it up on youtube and such. This way, more people get to see what Brotherhood's multiplayer is like, and Ubisoft get some free advertising. Now, the problem arises with actually recording gameplay footage on the PS3. I have a standard HDMI cable, and the Composite (ie, Red, Yellow and White picture and sound cables) which came with the PS3, and a few other wires from my PC and lying around the place. The ideal situation is to be able to play the game on my TV while the PS3 or computer records the session, but any real way of recording without sacrificing picture detail is ideal. Assassin's Creed games always look stunning, and I want that to be reflected. Another major problem is, I don't want to have to buy any fancy recording equipment like a capture card or something. I want to be able to use what I have. So, there we have it. I'll be able to test out any solutions over the month or so until the Beta is released, and then I'll post any videos (or attempts of such) on youtube. Thanks guys. more

Open Question: How old is too old to be a trainee or a junior?

If there is a job being advertised that asks an office junior or trainee is it worth applying even though i have lots of experience and am definitely over twenty. I am finding it really difficult to get a new job and I am trying anything. I am not bothered about working for minimum wage (better than being unemployed) but I don't know if there is any point if they are asking for a trainee. Surely if someone is willing to work it shouldn't necessarily matter what age they are. more

I've seen this fellowship advertised for Knee, Foot and Ankle Surgery: "To develop clinical and surgical skills in knee, foot and ankle surgery to consultant level. At the end of the fellowship the candidate will have had broad exposure to sports injuries, knee and ankle arthroplasty, forefoot and hindfoot surgery." As it says "To consultant level" will this mean it will contain training in Knee, foot and ankle trauma such as fractured tibias/fibulas? In desperation after looking for work in London for 4 months without success despite a good professional background and skills, I am thinking of advertising myself as a conduit for people who don't know how or can't be bothered - to sell their EBay stuff through me. Are there any particular mistakes (like I already know I am not going to store stuff for people and that I will take no responsibility for stuff that is overpriced or doesn't sell. Resolved Question: How can I equate the water capacity of a radiator to BTUs?

A question for someone who knows about plumbing: I see many radiators advertised with reference to the BTUs. There are web-sites with calculators for the BTUs needed for a room. On that basis it's easy to identify a suitable radiator. But... What if I make my own "designer" radiator? There are no published BTU data. It mostly depends on the radiator's surface area, doesn't it? That's the only relevant distinction between one radiator and another one that one might choose. All other factors (water temperature, flow-rate, etc.) must be assumed by radiator manufacturers when giving BTU data. So what's the assumed ratio between surface area and BTUs? Your reference to EDR units helped me find a web-site which relates between radiator size to EDRs. So I'm at least close to having a rough estimate. Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my question(novel), any advice that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. I have wanted a Ragdoll cat for the last 5 or so years and on a spur of the moment decision last week my partner finally agreed to let me have one. Naively I wasn't aware that these type of cats should be bought from registered owners with paperwork etc. I understand that this is my own fault. However, I had seen advertised on a popular advertisement website that there were Ragdoll kittens for sale at £250 nearby (West Lothian). My partner and I went to view the kittens and there were 3, I said that I was looking for a boy, the woman said she had two boys, picked one up and handed it to me whilst she talked about the characteristics of Ragdoll cats and showed me both the parents. Unfortunately on the way home in the car I noticed that the kitten had a slight deformity on his hind left leg. It is slightly shorter and has only two metatarsal bones which causes the kitten to limp slightly. I emailed the breeders the same night but they didn't respond, my partner tried phoning them but they wouldn't answer the phone. Today I took the the kitten to the vet who checked him over, I told the vet that the kitten will run and jump about and it doesn't seem to affect him at all and he is quite happy. The vet has said that he is healthy in every other way and as he gets older it may be in the kittens interest to amputate the leg due to him getting bigger and heavier it may be best but it's something he will assess in months to come. The vet has said that this operation may cost 200-300 pounds and that it was unfair and unlikely that the breeders had not noticed this deformity. He has said that I should amicably contact them and ask for a partial refund to help pay towards the vet bills or return him. The vet also took the breeders details and said to ask them to contact him at the surgery and he would verify this. Failing that he has said to report them to the trading standards. My partner managed to speak with the husband breeder today who was unhelpful and uncooperative (I'll refrain from typing what my partner actually said...) The breeder barely gave my partner a chance to explain the situation and basically said he would refuse to pay anything towards the operation and to take him back if we were not happy. Taking the kitten back is all fair and well but I'm not sure that I would trust these people to refund us properly and I don't believe that they would care for the kitten appropriately or may just try to fob it off on someone else. In hindsight these people aren't compassionate towards the kittens, they only see £££ signs. I'm sorry that I've warbled on, I'm almost done... I've had the kitten for 5 days now, I've affectionately named him Toulouse after Toulouse-Lautrec and he's snuggled up next to me. It is easy for others to say "it's just a cat, put things into perspective..." I appreciate that we all have different opinions and beliefs but I would like to think of myself as a responsible cat owner who has agreed to take responsibility for Toulouse, after all, he is oblivious to the upset and has done nothing wrong, would someone else let him limp about painfully when he is bigger or put him to sleep rather than forking out a vet bill. What a waste of a sweet life that would be. I'm very angry at the breeders, I think it is very unfair what they have done and they have handled it terribly. I've accepted that they wont give any money back but I feel that I should be doing something to get these breeders pulled up? Can I report them to trading standards? Or another similar body? Where do I stand? Do I have a case or is this just something that I will have to chalk up to experience and wait for Karma to take effect? more

Resolved Question: What's the best way to help this stray cat?

I've got two 11 year old boys (feline boys) of my own. Recently a little black cat has started coming through the catflap and helping himself to their food. This isn't a problem now that I've worked out I am feeding three cats not two and have stopped wondering why mine are always hungry. The black cat is very timid, won't come in if I am there and runs away if I go in the kitchen while he's eating. Additionally my alpha male cat sees him off if their paths cross. He's not hugely aggressive, but quite definite about whose food it is etc. So, this cat is a stray. In a couple of months' time it will be winter. I'm happy to keep feeding him but I think he should have a home (not with me, I'll advertise for a home for him). What are my chances of getting him used to coming indoors and getting the alpha cat to accept him, so that I can do this? Tricky, huh.My boys are fully inoculated and flea treated and hang out with every cat in the area, so they won't catch anything from this cat that they wouldn't get elsewhere. I can't give this cat a home as I live in a one-bedroomed flat and my current cats wouldn't stand for it anyway. more

I am 18 and never had a job in my life. I've just came out of a training course, starting college part-time next month. I would really like to earn some money of my own, have a part-time job between college....i've tried looking for a job, going into places, handing in my CV in person & online...but i dont seem to be able to carry off the confidence and drive that most employers look for. I've had 2 Interveiws this year, and both were unsuccessful because i failed to impress the interviewee or 'Advertise' myself in a promising manner. When it comes down to it; i am incapable of talking about myself in a positive manner because i dont believe in myself due to various experiences and traumas that have knocked my confidence, its very frustrating. Its like i have a mental block where i dont believe i deserve anything good. I've been left with no self-belief. I have a private tenancy that lasts until next April. I was offered a job 100 miles away and asked my landlord if I could surrender my tenancy early and move out. He agreed on the basis that I stayed until another tenant could be found. Well a tenant was found the day the property was advertised. However, my job offer has now fallen through (not my fault, employer said he now didn't want to take on any new employees now as he has lost several big clients). Where do I stand now with my current home? Can I just tell them I am no longer moving and will be staying in the house? Nothing was ever put in writing and my actual tenancy runs until next April. The new tenant that was found has not signed anything yet. The agent is apparently closed until Thursday and they have left a number for emergency repairs. I am rather worried as I have a young child and don't want to be forced to move. I don't have any rent arrears and I take really good care of the house. more

The Mail on Sunday have been advertising their You magazine. This week it has Nigella Lawson on the cover. If you have seen the advert maybe you know who sings Sunday Girl.
