Open Question: Can my sister in law take her baby out of the state without getting charged?

My sister in law (15 years old) just had a baby June 16th in Indiana. She is wanting to move in with her mother in Oklahoma mid-August. We are worried that the father of the baby may take some sort of legal action for this move. Is there anything he can do? I believe he is emotionally abusive and has really hurt my sister in law with some of his words and we have plenty of people who can vouch for this behavior of his and my SIL doesn't want the baby around this stressful environment. more

Resolved Question: Legally, is a broken leg considered a serious bodily injury? (Indiana)?

DUI accidnet in which sober individual who was hit suffers a broken leg which wil heel fine, assume scrapes and bruises as well. Is it possible that the person could be initiially charged with DUI serious injury, and then dropped (to just a DUI) since the injuries aren't going to be permanent, or debilitating? Does the law make a distinction between just a dui and a dui causing non-serious bodil injury? I've only seen "dui resulting in serious bodily injury" or where the definition of a "dui resulting in injury" is that the injuries are serious (at least loss of 30% of abilities, permanent, etc.) So basically what I'm asking, hypothetically, is what would the final charges be for someone who hit someone drunk, caused what may have seemed serious bodily injuries at first, but ends up just being a regular broken leg? Would they wait to charge the individual with the dui-injury until they knew the injuries were going to be serious? or would they charge them with that right of the bat and then drop the injury charge once it was determined the injuries weren't serious? Voting Question: What do I do to get back in court?

I recieved full sole custody of my 2 children in 2008 in Indiana. At tht time they were living with their mother and I did not request child support at that time as long as she would make every effort to see the kids. She was awarded visitation right by IPTGuidelines and was responsible for all transportation. We lived 15 minutes from her house. She did not hold up to seeing the kids. In 2009 I recieved a job offer in Illinois. I file a motion to relocate, and for child support and we went back to court. She filed for changed of custody stating in her motion that she was earning approx. 1300/mo. My lawyer never questioned her about her income so he was unable to rule on child support for lack of evidence. Also, he made me responsible for all transportation because again he was unable to calculate her income. I asked my lawyer what we can do and she told me that we could do nothing for a year because Indiana law says you can only file 1 motion per year and only have 1 hearing...is this true? Also, the order states that I am to claim the children on income taxes which i was unable to do because she filed her before me and claimed the children. I got a copy of her taxes and she made 33,000 in 2009 far from her 1200/mo she claimed to have made...Can she get in trouble for lying in a motion and for claiming the kids? more

Voting Question: Statutory Rape Laws For Indiana?

I'm 17 years old and my boyfriend is 22. We work together, and today my manager asked me about it, and she said that the only thing that she was concerned about was our age difference. I told her that the law in indiana is 16 with parental consent, and at 17 there really was no law. She told me that there was like a grace period or something and that you can be 17 but if the person that you are dating is more than 2 years older than you its illegal. Both of my parents know his age and they consent to it. So is it legal for me to be dating him or for me to be having sexual relations with him? I would really appreciate a real answer, instead of a lecture about how a 22 year old shouldn't be dating a 17 year old, and if they are, they are just using the teenager and all that. Obviously my parents wouldn't have consented to it if they had thought that he was just using me, and I was just going to get hurt. thanks. more

Voting Question: What book/laws do I go by for my driver's license in the state of Indiana?

When I turned 16 in June on 2009, I got my permit. I held on to my permit till May of 2010. I read the Learner's Book of 2009 to get my permit in 2009, But since then The learners book has changed. In the 2009 book, it said that i had to wait 90 day till i could have someone under the age of 21 in my car. This year's book says that I will have to wait 180 days till i can have someone under the age of 21 in my car. I didn't have to read the 2010 book because i passed my test in 2009 to get my permit. i read the 2009 book. i have not read 2010 book... So i guess my question is, Do i wait 90 days or 180 days for me to drive with someone under the age of 21? Thanks fo the comment in advanced. more

Voting Question: SB1070 must be such a good law if Lawmakers in 18 other states aim to copy Arizona's immigration law?

Arizona's sweeping new immigration law doesn't even take effect until July 29, but lawmakers in 18 other states say they want to push similar measures when their legislative sessions start up again in 2011. Arizona's law, approved in April, requires police to check the immigration status of anyone they think is in the country illegally. Violators face up to six months in jail and $2,500 in fines. Similar legislation may have the best chance of passing in Oklahoma, which in 2007 gave police more power to check the immigration status of people they arrest. Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina have introduced bills similar to Arizona's law, but none will advance this year. In addition, state immigration legislation is being considered in Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Utah. President Barack Obama has called Arizona's law irresponsible, but Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says it helped prompt him to send 1,200 National Guard members to the U.S.-Mexican border, mostly to her state. She and U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., say that's not enough. Obama is asking Congress for $600 million in emergency funds for 1,000 more Border Patrol agents, 160 new federal immigration officers and two unmanned aircraft, but immigration is not his top priority this year. An Associated Press-GfK poll this month found that 85 percent of people rank immigration as an important issue; about half disapprove of Obama's handling of it. http://www.tampabay.com/incoming/lawmakers-in-18-other-states-aim-to-copy-arizonas-immigration-law/1105166 more

Voting Question: Should I stay or Leave this Relationship?

Hey guys, I have an issue. I just graduated from Undergrad in Illinois, and I plan to go to graduate school for mathematics in the midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee...) starting in January of 2011. My boyfriend is just entering his senior year in Undegrad in Indiana this year. He is trying to go to law school for August of 2011, and although he is applying for 1 or 2 schools in Illinois, he wants to go to school at NYU or University of Southern California, or the University of Miami. My problem is this: we just got together in February of this year, so we've been together 4 months now. We already hold a semi Long distance relationship (he's in school in the next state over so we see each other about once a week and sometimes we have to skip weeks if one of us is busy). This summer, he took an internship in Texas so he's not in Illinois now either. Ever since we've gotten together we've had a semi-long distance relationship, and now with him trying to go to Law School elsewhere, our relationship would have been a long distance one for about the first 4 years of the relationship. He keeps trying to convince me that he's going to make it work... but it's really not feeling good for me. He will be in Lawschool across the country for 3-4 years after we've already had a semi long distance relationship for about a year prior to that!! I really hate this... We aren't engaged or married or anything... but I don't know if it's even worth going through this for the next 4 years. I just don't see room for growth between us if we will barely get to see each other (due to thousands of miles in between us, full time work to pay for school, and intense full time graduate program workloads) enough for the next 4 years. I dont know... should I stay or leave? Should I sit and wait for him? more

Voting Question: Termination of a Friendship?

So 4 years ago I joined the military, and while in BCT I met this girl and we became friends. We were both medically discharged out, but kept in contact ever since, and have been really good friends. At one point she had planned on moving to California (where I live) from Indiana (where she lives), and we made plans to get a place together. We talked on the phone and text messaged each other all the time, and when anything happened in either of our lives, we were immediately there for the other. I was supportive through a couple of law suites she was going through, even though I thought both of them were rather ridiculous, and was always there to talk when she said that she needed to. Just in the last few weeks she's done a complete 180. She was talking about moving out here and getting a place as soon as her car accident lawsuit ended, and we'd been looking at houses and she started looking into colleges she might be interested in attending in my city. It seemed like she was really serious about coming out here. In March she said it would probably be in July. In April I unexpectedly found out that I needed to be looking for a new place (I lived with my grandparents and they were moving out of town), so I got an apartment. It was something I could afford, but was big enough that she would have her own room and bathroom when she decided to move out here. A few weeks after I moved into my new place she suddenly decided that she wasn't going to move out here anymore, just come for a visit. I was slightly upset, but didn't press the issue. It was her decision and she was doing what she thought was best for her. Now, this past weekend I noticed that she disappeared from my Facebook friends list, which I thought was odd, so I sent her a text message asking if she was mad at me. I was completely shocked when she sent me a bunch of nasty text messages back telling me I was a horrible friend, a selfish person, and touching on a few reasons. They included: 1) I didn't want to talk to her on the phone...I was always texting messaging her, and I missed ONE of our arranged phone conversations because I had to work late (we tried to talk every Wednesday evening). 2) I wasn't willing to go to San Francisco with her when she came out for vacation (I can see why that upset her, but in my defense, a weekend trip to San Francisco isn't something I can afford right now and I told her that, and even though she offered to pay for it, I'm too proud). I suggested other things to do that are in the city where I live, and she turned down all of them. 3) That I don't pay enough attention to her. How was I supposed to know that my life is supposed to revolve around her? I have other friends that I like spending time with. I'm not going to stay home and talk on the phone with her all day! Just FYI, she doesn't have a job, nor is she going to school right now, and when she wasn't going to a meeting with her lawyer or court or something, she was always at home watching television. In response to her nasty text message, which really hurt my feelings, I sent her one back simply saying I felt she was acting childish and that my life doesn't revolve around her and I don't have the time to defend myself against her accusations. By that time I felt like she'd already made her permanent decision to end our friendship, and I wasn't in the mood to deal with it (my boyfriend and I had just broken up that same week, and I was going through some stuff with another friend, so I already had a lot on my mind as was pretty much thinking, just eff it). In retaliation, she sent me a nasty message back about how it's a good thing I'm no longer in the military because my selfishness would get my entire battalion killed. I was just like, what the hell? What does the military have to do with anything at all? The message really hurt me, so I replied that she could go stick it where the sun don't shine, and after a few more nasty messages from her, I finally blocked her number, deleted all of her messages and I'm trying to go on with life. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I could have done differently in this situation? Or something I can do now? I feel bad about losing our friendship, but at this point I don't want anything else to do with her. Any kind of opinion is greatly appreciated... more

It's probably just the town I live in because its so small. The nearest cities (Richmond, Muncie) are considered big to the town im in. They're small and boring too. All Indiana has that I know of is Indianapolis, which is too far away from me to matter. I miss Ohio. This state has weird laws and rules in school that are completely different than what im used to. My life was ruined when I moved here and I cant wait for another year to go by so I can move out. ughhh sorry. i needed to vent. so dont be angry. You'd hate it too if you were 17, taken away from family, boyfriend youve had for 2 years, church and friends, and your home and pets to be placed in the middle of corn fields with dramatic pricks at school. I havent made one friend. Ive been nice, invited ppl over and im usually a friendly person whos easy to getalong with. But no one here will accept me because im new and they already have their friends. it really sucks. I want out. more

Resolved Question: Can someone recommend a couple "easy" yet upscale golf courses in Palm Springs?

Hello. My in-laws started golfing a year ago and they're hooked, but they're still only intermediate golfers who shoot well over a hundred. They're visiting Palm Springs from Indiana so I want to give them that upscale Palm Springs golf experience but it seems like all the nicer courses are just way too difficult for golfers at their level. For example, I was considering Indian Wells Celebrity course and Arnie's Classic Club, but both those clubs have slopes close to 140. Can anyone recommend a nice upscale golf course in Palm Springs with relatively wider fairways and flatter lies? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Indiana renter's rights?

I am trying to rent an apartment at Purdue. I recently got a job there and have been working for three months. In order to secure a lease I must A) provide 6 months worth of pay stubs or B) get a co-signer I do not have 6 months worth of pay stubs since this is my first job after college and I've only been there three months. I tried to get my parents to be co-signers but their credit is not good enough. So I asked what my other options were because I don't enjoy the idea of asking other relatives to be a co-signer. The apartment complex said that they only other way to get the apartment is if I pay the entire 12 month's worth of rent up front. I knew landlords could ask for one month rent as a security deposit, but I didn't think they could require all 12 months up front. Is this legal? Or are they just trying to get my money up front. I really don't want to pay up front because for one thing I don't have the money right now because I just started my job. And secondly if I pay the whole rent and the landlord evicts me or stops paying the mortgage I may not get my money back. Please help me out, especially if you are a lawyer in Indiana. Once again, this is an Indiana law question. more

Resolved Question: Why does the USA support Israel?

I live in Indianapolis, Indiana(USA) *-It is doubtful you will. But, please read and consider all of this before replying. It did take me a bit to compile this information. I am also happy to provide multiple unique sources for each stated fact below*- While I know we can not allow anyone to beat up, push around or bully the USA. I am curious why the government feels it absolutely necessary to defend Israel at such great financial cost, human life, direct attacks on the USA when Israel offers the USA nothing in return. Israel offers no special treatment for any US citizen if not Jewish. The wars which were fought in the ME within the last 35 years which involved the USA less than 1-4% of the forces were Israeli. While Israel is in a war torn part of the known world given the size, population & geographic makeup it is not a mandatory strategic military location. While I understand and acknowledge the desire to police and bring piece to the known world this is truly not our objective. Ireland, China, Russia, Africa Korea and numerous(LOTS) of other nations are at war, their people are being murdered, slaughtered, sometimes literally skinned alive and raped. Yet, it is Israel we fight for not them. Risk management suggests to protect 'investments'(relationships/livelihood as relevant here) going outside of the box is sometimes(often is) necessary, expected or required. However, if their is no return on the investment, it is unsuccessful or otherwise drawing serious negative or unwanted attention/actions it is only reasonable the 'asset/investment' be dropped. The US has supported and dropped support of many nations many times. Many nations have done this tens of thousands of times. Amnesty International, United Nations, World Health Organization, Red Cross along with much of the world have and continue to say Israel acts in violation of humanitarian rights or violates international laws. At last count the UN had ruled against Israel 40 + times. I believe the US vetoed each one. I am no attorney. I do not understand international law. However, I assume Amnesty International, United Nations, Red Cross & World Health Organization do. I guess they all might be nazi's. =========================================== Aside from your personal belief why do you feel or why do you think it necessary USA support Israel? I know many theists will not be able to hold their tongue. However, I am not interested in biblical or religious reasons. I am not a Christian so your biblical authority does not apply to me and well over 1/2 the known universe. I am interested in an intelligent dialogue... ========================================= Osama Bil Laden said in non - ambigious terms with an amazing grasp of the written English word that the reason for the attacks on the USA was because we support Israel. The WTC attacks were done for the exact reasons Since about 1948 the USA has given Israel $6,000,000 - $8,000,000 a day. This does not include training, weapons, supplies or other services. Nor does it include money which might not be accounted for. This is 3+ billion dollars a day. These figures also do not include the costs of wars we fight for or on behalf of Israel. Israel was evaluated twice in 1962 by the former exon cheif geologist. Israel has as much oil as other countries in the region. Since war broke our in Israel the USA(every president in the last 35 years - EVERY) and every civilized nation has attempted to broker peace in the ME(Middle East) The population of Israel is 7.5 million as of (2009). It seems to vary a little source to source. Israel could fit into Florida 8 times, Israel is smaller than New Jersey. 24% of the work force population hold degrees Much of Israel, the larger percent is non-arable land(google that if you have to). Only 17% of Israel is arable Environment—current issues: limited arable land and natural fresh water resources pose serious constraints; desertification; air pollution from industrial and vehicle emissions; groundwater pollution from industrial and domestic waste, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. US forces in the Gulf war made up 73% Israeli forces less than 8% The number of Israeli troops in Afghanistan does not even equal 2% of the total forcesI was hoping for a more rational or intelligent response. As I mentioned in the question which you did not read Israel is of no strategic military value given its geography / size. We already occupy other nations in that area. Thus far in all the wars we have fought, paid for and supported in that area of the world Israel really has not helped.Neither of these responses were good answer. Consider the question and these responses. I guess the community will vote for one but neither were good :( more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know anything about Indiana tenants rights?

I live in Lake County Indiana and my air conditioner just took a poop. The landlord states he isn't required by law to furnish air conditioning. But as part of my lease it states that air conditioning is part of the "amenities" of the apartment. I do not want to be uncomfortable and I also don't want to cause problems...but is he right? more
