Resolved Question: Politically, is FTC regulation of false advertising an illegitimate use of State coercion?
As most people here probably know, the Federal Trade Commission regulates certain kinds of advertising in the United States, and is charged with enforcing rules against deceptive statements in advertising, as well as some other abusive kinds of advertising.
For example, there is an FTC rule against "bait" advertising -- as in "bait and switch" - advertising that a company uses to lure customers into a store or a web site in search of some item that the advertiser doesn't really plan to sell. In "bait" advertising, a company only uses the promise of having a particular item as "bait" to attract people who then will be presented with a pitch for other stuff -- for example, other consumer goods offered at much higher prices.
From a "free market," "laissez-faire" standpoint, do you think that it's wrong for the FTC to impose rules on the advertising business in this way? Or is it okay?
If you're a pure libertarian believer in free-market forces, for example, should the Federal Government just butt out of the advertising world completely, and allow advertisers to say whatever they want?
Or not?

Sobe lifewater - black and blue berry for example.
Per their website (http://pepsiproductfacts.com/infobyproduct.php)
Serving of 8oz has 0 calories and 6g carbs
Serving of 20oz has 5 calories and 15g carbs
According to normal calculations there are 4 calories per 1g of carbohydrate. This is scientific fact.
So it should be 24 calories (8oz) and 60 calories (20oz)
1+1+3?
Fuzzy math which I feel is false advertising unless this is explained to me, especially the 20oz calulation as I know the USDA allows manufacturers adjust when under certain limits but this seems extreme. Lifewater is doing the same with their LifeWater zero products.the actual label states

For example, Budwiser is know as "the king of beers." But in 1950 they were actually awarded that title.
hypothetically, if they were never given that title, would they be able to call them self "the king of beers?" Or is that just a matter of opinion by the company.
Also Gray Goose vodka says they have "the worlds best tasting vodka? Is this false advertising is they were never given that title by award, or is it just a matter of opinion?

moreResolved Question: Do you still believe conventional medicine's biggest misrepresentations?
(NaturalNews) Mainstream health care isn't based on "health" or "caring." It's actually based on an ingrained system of medical mythology that's practiced -- and defended -- by those who profit from the continuation of sickness and disease. This system of medical mythology might also simply be called "lies", and today I'm sharing with NaturalNews readers the top ten lies that are still followed and promoted under mainstream health care in America today.
Lie #1) Vaccines make you healthy
Vaccines have emerged as the greatest and most insidious mythology yet fabricated by western medicine. The idea that vaccines always protect you from infectious disease in the long term is blatantly false because this year's flu shot actually makes you more susceptible to next year's influenza (http://www.naturalnews.com/028538_s...).
On top of that, even the theoretical short-term effectiveness of vaccines is dwarfed by the far more effective protection offered by vitamin D and other immune-modulating nutrients. (http://www.naturalnews.com/027385_V...)
Lie #2) Pharmaceuticals prevent disease
The big push by Big Pharma is now focused on treating healthy people with drugs as if pharmaceuticals were nutrients that could somehow prevent disease. This is the new push with cholesterol drugs: Give 'em to everyone, whether they have high cholesterol or not!
But pharmaceuticals don't prevent disease, and medications are not vitamins. Your body has no biological need for any pharmaceuticals at all. People who believe they need pharmaceuticals have simply been the victims of "fabricated consent" engineered by Big Pharma's clever advertising and P.R. spin.
Lie #3) Doctors are experts in health
Doctors don't even study health; they study disease. Modern doctors are taught virtually nothing about nutrition, wellness or disease prevention. Expecting a doctor to guide you on health issues is sort of like expecting your accountant to pilot a jet airliner -- it's simply not something he or she has ever been trained in.
That's not to say doctors aren't intelligent people. Most of them have high Iqs. But even a genius can't teach you something they know nothing about.
Lie #4) You have no role in your own healing
Doctors, drug companies and health authorities all want you to believe that your health is determined by their interventions. If you believe them, you have virtually no role in your own health or healing -- it's all managed by their drugs, their screening, their surgeries and their interventions.
Lie #5) Disease is a matter of bad luck or bad genes
Western medicine wants you to believe in the mythology of spontaneous disease -- disease that strikes without cause. This is equivalent to saying that disease is some sort of voodoo black magic and that patients have no way to prevent disease through their own diets or lifestyle choices.
It's funny, actually: Western medicine claims to be driven by scientific, rational thinking, and yet the entire industry still fails to acknowledge that chronic disease always has a causeand that most of the time, that cause has everything to do with nutritional deficiencies, exposure to toxic chemicals and a lack of exercise.
Disease is almost never a matter of bad luck or bad genes.
Lie #6) Screening equals prevention
Western medicine doesn't believe in disease prevention. Rather, the industry believes in screening while calling it prevention. But screening isn't prevention by even the wildest stretch of the imagination. In fact, virtually all the popular screening methodologies actuallypromote diseases.
Mammography, for example, emits so much radiation that it causes breast cancer in tens of thousands of women each year (http://www.naturalnews.com/027558_m...). Imaging dyes used in radiological scans can cause horrific side effects, and psychiatric "disorder" screening is little more than a thinly-disguised patient recruitment scheme disguised as medicine.
Real prevention of disease must involve disease prevention through nutrition, patient education about the causes of disease and lifelong changes in eating habits. Yet western medicine teaches absolutely none of these things. Heck, it doesn't even believe in such ideas.
Lie #7) Health insurance will keep you healthy
This is a favorite lie of those who recently pushed for the Big Pharma-sponsored health care reform that has swept across America. The lie supposes that merely having health insurance will provide some sort of magical protection against disease. But in reality, health insurance doesn't make you healthy! It is only YOU and your choices about foods, exposures to toxic chemicals, pursuit of exercise and time in nature that can make you healthy.
Health insurance is, in effect, a wager that you will get sick. How does gambling on your sickness provide any protection edit: a logical fallacy is attacking the person, not the argument, so you'll have to do better than slander Mike Adams.
Vaccination is only a theory. It's not fact. It is thought to work in a certain way that has not actually been proven by anybody. Improvement in public sanitation has eradicated smallpox. Polio has been linked to DDT poisoning. The polio cases now occurring, and they are, are caused by the vaccine."Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence" - Albert Einstein

moreResolved Question: Should I, or should I not report users that advertise on questions (losing "Trust"/They're getting smarter!)?
Could it end up being false reporting, and could I lose "trust in the community"? The only reason I'm asking is because if I do see something that is extreme and absolutely does need to be removed, I want my report to actually be noticed and not just pushed aside.
I spend a lot of time surfing Y!A (especially in the Mental Health and Psychology section) and I'm beginning to see it more and more. There are certain users that seem to answer ANY question with a site, or advertisement that tries to sell a product.
For example I just answered a question for another Y!A user trying to find a certain movie, and another answer said that she solved all of her problems by buying clothes at this site, and posted a link. I've seen some for medication and all sorts of things, but that's not the point.
I know some of the accounts have been removed because they keep making new accounts and advertising the same product, I see it all the time. Now they're beginning to start with "I'm not sure, but I think this might solve your problem" and end with "Please continue to use answers.yahoo.com" as if they were really interested in the question they're asking, but what they offer is completely irrelevant.
I think it just pisses me off when people really need help on something and others post links to sell a product. I'm not sure if I should report the people, or if it's just them getting the best of me. I sure as hell know it pisses me off when I ask a question and someone advertises on it.
Would Y!A get sick of my reports on these people? Would they mistake my report as being inaccurate now that these advertisers are finding ways around it to still sell their product? Because of this, should I stop so I don't "Lose Trust"?I like your answer.
What would be the right way going about reporting an advertisement? Do I report it under Spam, or something else?

If you read some of my other questions, you may see a pattern regarding my more recent questions. Now, I'm looking for a new car.

I'm seeing a lot of listings like this http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/cto/1593573714.html where they set the price field to $1 and don't mention anything else about the price of the car anywhere in the post.
Another instance had one with the price set to $100 and was an old beat to death pickup truck that would have been fine. When I showed up to buy it, hundred dollar bill in hand, the guy said he wanted $2500 for it and only set the price to $100 to get me to look at it.
What's the likelihood of me getting a car at $1 plus court costs? Is this actionable in court under the heading of false advertising?

moreResolved Question: Does anyone else think WWE is starting to false advertise these "guest hosting" concepts?
Every week, they promote a celebrity hosting the next edition of RAW, yet, do we ever see any actual hosting being done? Take last night for example. They were hyping William Shatner as being this week's special guest "host", but hell, all the man did was hang around backstage while being involved in hilarious/over the top segments and only managed to make an in-ring appearance during the conclusion of the show
Come on, if Shatner were really hosting the show, he'd received a massive introduction at the beginning of the show, he'd introduced himself, call off some of the matches from ringside, take occasional interviewing duties, and even cracking an inconvenient joke here and there. He'd be the main purpose of the show for the night, seen throughout the entire program because he's supposedly the man in charge.
and I'm not only talking about Shatner, but all of the so called guest "hosts" that we've had in the past. The only one that came remotely close to hosting was Dennis Miller, and I applaud him for doing so

moreVoting Question: what would you do in this situation?
i was hired as a nanny. I take care of a 7yr old and a 5 yr old the 5yr old has sensory processing disorder which causes him to have behavioral problem (i know its not his fault i don't hold it against him) and my daughter who is a few days away from being a yr.and i am 21. it sounded like a great opportunity because i got to take my daughter who was not yet a year at the time and i was getting paid well. but now i am about 7-8 months into it and it was definitely false advertising. for example today i am supposed to do the regular nanny things school work exercise feed stuff like that but also do the laundry clean the house feed the cats (i hate animals) basically do all the stuff no one wants to do and when i come back the next day it is all a mess again and they tell me to clean it in the tone like i never do. and the husband always says oh we really worked hard to get the house clean so try to keep it that way. grrrrrr!
lately i have been getting mad at the kids because of their horrible behavior and disrespect. i have tried everything i can think of and nothing changes it. i've tried yelling, talking, being frank, not caring . my mom has told me that it is because i am getting to close to them and i need to remember that they are not my kids and i did not raise them, so their behavior is not my failure. but i cant help it. i have been thinking about quitting but we moved to the town we are in just for this job. and my daughter just absolutely loves them and i care about them too. my husband commutes to the next town over and there is nothing here for us but this job so i'm waiting it out till our lease is up. but am i over reacting or just being immature about it. i need fresh advice my husband is a broken record on this subject.

I have a Verizon prepaid phone.
when you get one of those prepaid cards, it tells you how many days it's good for, but it never is.
Example, they say a $15 card is good for 30 days but it isn't really because there is a daily usage fee of 99 cents and 10 cents per minute for a call. This only lasted me maybe 2 or 2.5 weeks.
So is this false advertisement?
What can I do make it last 30 days or the number of days they say it's good for? I already have a text plan.

moreResolved Question: Why are they wrong not have a perfect body, but also wrong to get surgery?
The most common example:
If she has sag, or breasts that are too small, we tell her she is unattractive.
If she gets surgery, we tell her she is dishonest AND unattractive. We tell her it's false advertising, even though they are not going to disappear as soon as she takes her shirt off. Even though her genetics might have given her perfect breasts before she had a baby, or had cancer, or when she was younger.
This of course applies to the whole body. Scars, tummy tucks after weight loss or a baby, I have a friend who has an injury to her lip, and is very self conscious about it, but is afraid that if she gets a lip injection to even out the contour, no man will want her. What should she do? (And don't say confidence, because years of daily harassment about her looks, from two idiots who only wanted to hurt her feelings, has destroyed that, even though she is one of the most beautiful women I know. She thinks she's gross looking!)
Just tell me what women like her are supposed to do?
How can they be attractive enough that we will stop hurting them emotionally?
Are you serious when you ask why they wont leave the lights on, or why they have no confidence?Tiger I can't take credit for this one. My sister pointed it out. She's right. I've seen it many times since she mentioned it.humaninstinct- "we" is usually (but not always) men.Colel Reb did I excuse women form treating men this same way? It's not my stance. I do agree that women get a lot more of this, and that it is more sever when women don't have natural good looks than when men are unattractive.
Have any men been given slack for getting surgery?Flack not slack. What they think is not the major problem. It's what is said, and the hurtful behavior that takes place that's the problem. Think what ever you want.Snorzle : ) I love getting huged. Thanks.Human Instinct, why would a woman tell HERSELF she's unattractive? The idea didn't orriginate in her head. Be sensable.

moreResolved Question: Company hiding actual prices?
Ok..I recently got scammed into a membership with this club...and I will be requesting a rescission of my contract for many, many reasons..one of them being this:
__________(need you to help fill in the blank)__________
Ok, here's the deal....what the company does is advertise their prices to be 40-50% cheaper than retail, but I've come to realize that they 'hide' additional costs and charges from plain view, and you don't know them until you're about to check out.(both in store and online purchase..and before taxes are calculated). These extra charges eliminate any potential for savings.
I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS A 'TITLE' OR 'NAME' FOR THIS UNFAIR PRACTICE.
For example...
They will advertise the same EXACT television make and model that best buy or any random retailer has and...
Hypothetically speaking..
That particular television would be regularly priced at $500 through 'best buy'
and in turn.....this scum of a membership club advertises it at $350ish for that same televsion...
You would like to think that it is a great deal..but after you check out..you are hit with $125ish in 'freight fees'..and $10ish in handling fees..flat shipping fee of $25ish dollars..and lots of other miscellaneous charges.
In the end, the item that should be discounted is wwwaayy more the the original retailer's price.
What is this scenario called? Shouldn't this be against the law?...kinda like price misrepresentation and false advertising?Animal Lover...you're attitude is quite ridiculous and you would have been better off not responding. You contributed ZERO to this question. Don't you have better things to do instead of being of NO USE?!
Either way...of course I have to option not to buy the products..but it's the membership itself that i am contesting. On their website and in their ads they advertise at one particular price..but then when you decide on it..and continue to check out..THEN they hit you with the hidden fees. And of course, at that time...I'd refuse to pay up.
The issue here is that they obtained my membership(fees/contract) by way of misleading information.
I just want to obtain my membership fees back by way of explaining to them that they have LIED about what they have to offer..and have NO ties with them whatsoever.

moreResolved Question: Can youa nswer these questions on Aspergers syndrome?
I ahve a variety of questions about aspergers synddrome, which i have.
1. Ive heard that people without aspergers syndrome, when they learn something, do not process the information into a logical equation but instead do god knows what else. FOr example, people seem to say to me that a neuroptypical person, when they hear "THe american civil war ended in 1864", do not try to mark down the historical information for immediate memorization but instead to god knows waht else. What do they do instead?
2. People seem to say that neurotypicals speak in vague, not-so-precise sentences and that aspies to them seem to speak in an unusually precise, accurate fashion. An apparent instance of this is as follows: In real life I once asked on yahoo answers whether or not french speakers learcn to nasalize soem vowels by instinct or by they're school grammar class teacher telling them to by saying "if you dont nasalize the o in mon you are not using right french gramar and are instead using bad grammar". One of the answers to my question was this:
"In France, you would pass Grammar, but they would refer you to a speech therapist, in America they can't reasonably expect you to have a perfect accent, so you should pass."
To me, this above sentence seems so vague, worded so nonspecifically that i dont know how on earth the person couldve expected me to know whether or not they were giving a "yes" or "no" answer. Since neurotpicals speak so imprecisely, what mechanism uiny our brain enables you to understand this person's wuote and what woudl you think they weree saying? Whats it like to think abstracy instead of literally?
3. Encyclopediadramatica is a parody of real encylopedias, so its contents are often false, but not always. ON the encylopediadramatica page about aspergers syndrome, it shows a video of a kid saying that peope who advertise porn on youtube need to "get a life and quit jacking it" and that "porn isnt good anyway". The article also stated that you may ahve aspergers yndrome if "you didnt masturbate untily ou were 16". A person ongaiaonline.com said, in response to me asking "whats so great about sex?". said "What?! THat's like asking whats so great about breathing. If you prefer computer games over ******* you are seriously fucke dup people are not biologically compelled to paly video games". So my question is, what exactly is it that makes neurotypicals take sex that seriously?
4. If neurotpyicals do not approach new friends by discussing things that interest them, how do they approach new people instead?
5. WHy on earth to neurotypicals tend to randomly blurt things which have no relavance whatsoever, sucha s how th weather is?? (smalltalk)

IMPOSTER OF ITALIAN FOOD YUCK 07/19/2008 Posted by ItalianFoodExpert
What a shame it is that a restaurant by the name of "Miceli's" would advertise its self as "authentic italian food from Old Chicago" When in reality it makes Pizza Hut sound like a true roman restaurant from the glory days of Julius Ceasar Augustus. This place is as bland as they come. Magic Mountain Pizza and Pasta put it to shame. I saw a rodent scurry from a disregarded slice in the alley. This place is a classic example of all that is wrong with America today. The shinny vineer looks spectacular, but on the inside its disintigrating to the core. My gastro-intestinal system will need at least a full month to recouperate from the penny flour and sugary sauced mess that Miceli's assaulted it with. If you are looking for the real thing go elsewhere!!!! For this place is a repulsive example of a false advertising.
Pros: none
Cons: food bad
moreResolved Question: Are the Army giving us false impressions of joining?
Do you think that the British Army are giving hopefuls false advertising with their television campaigns and promotional material? For example, is their website misinterpreted with no account of the difficulties or possibilities of death you may have to face when signing up?Reply to Mel T:
This was just an open question, of course deep down I realise that there may be ocassions in which the Army falsely interpret information for the sake of recruiting more soldiers. But can you blame them? If you fall for such a trap then you have to learn to pay for the decision, and being an armed force they can literally do whatever they wish.REPLY TO TREV:
It's not a stupid question! It was designed to get people thinking about how television and the internet is used as a medium for unethical ways of recruiting individuals. Please don't say you will be a recruiter or the war will simplt get worse.
