Open Question: summarise these 27 abuses by King George please please please?

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation: For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States: For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions. more

Resolved Question: Why isn't there anything in the 10 Commandments about slavery being horrible?

Especially since it was written shortly after the Jews escaped slavery in Egypt. All that whining God did about "His people" being enslaved by the Egyptians, but he forgets to tell "his people" not to enslave others or have them selves enslaved again.(Of course there is no archaeological proof that Egyptians had that many slaves). And then of course God goes on to not only condone slavery, but make laws as to how you should treat your slave and even sell your daughter if you can't afford to raise her. Open Question: Dems illegal supporters want all Americans to wear a National ID in their fingers for immigration reform?

Dems spark alarm with call for national ID card By Alexander Bolton - 04/30/10 06:00 AM ET A plan by Senate Democratic leaders to reform the nation’s immigration laws ran into strong opposition from civil liberties defenders before lawmakers even unveiled it Thursday. Democratic leaders have proposed requiring every worker in the nation to carry a national identification card with biometric information, such as a fingerprint, within the next six years, according to a draft of the measure. The proposal is one of the biggest differences between the newest immigration reform proposal and legislation crafted by late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). The national ID program would be titled the Believe System, an acronym for Biometric Enrollment, Locally stored Information and Electronic Verification of Employment. It would require all workers across the nation to carry a card with a digital encryption key that would have to match work authorization databases. http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/95235-democrats-spark-alarm-with-call-for-national-id-card Hmm doesn't the bible warn us about this? Wouldn't it be irrelevant for Democrats ( Who are for illegal aliens ) to force a National ID card for all Americans to work and buy things? http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/95235-democrats-spark-alarm-with-call-for-national-id-cardbrown950 - Did you read the whole thing. Open Question: What happens after a credit card civil suit is withdrawn?

I was sent a notice of civil suit from a law firm supposedly representing capital one. I sent a certified return receipt letter to the law firm requesting some documentation, and provided the court with my intent to appear at the hearing. I was sent some paperwork from the law firm but heard nothing else. When I went to the hearing today, I was informed that capital one had withdrawn the case. Does anyone have any idea what that means? Can capital one come back in a month or 12 and try to collect again? Or does this mean they can no longer try to get any money? more

Open Question: "drunk tank" criminal records?

If I was held under California Penal Code 647(g), and didn't have to pay any fines or go to court, will it appear on my record? *California Penal Code 647(f) considers public intoxication a misdemeanor. The code describes public intoxication as someone who displays intoxication to liquor, drugs, controlled substances or toluene and demonstrates an inability to care for themselves or others, or interferes or obstructs the free use of streets, sidewalks or other public way. California Penal Code 647(g) affords law enforcement the option to take an individual fitting the arrest criteria for 647(f), and no other crime, into civil protective custody if a "sobering facility" is available. Essentially, the detainee agrees to remain at the location until the facility's staff consents to their departure; usually after four hours and upon the belief that the detainee is safe to look after themselves. Not every municipality in California has such a facility. Also, if a person is being combative and/or is under the influence of drugs, they will be taken to jail. Unlike a person who is taken to jail, a civil detainee under 647(g) is not later prosecuted in a court of law. more

Open Question: Religion and the Law?

In nearly any religion, even some of the supposed, free religions and natural ones. God or gods, create civil laws for mankind. Though this could be seen as man laying out his own moral guidelines for the direct community, it also seems like a very trivial deeds, for a universal creator and keeper to perform. Such as the ten Commandments, they seem less like divine will and laws, and more like Civil Court laws. As i said, i can see how it may have been man, laying out the laws for the community, but i doubt a entity which formed all that is, would bother creating a handful of laws, to govern an entire species. Do not Steal? Why would a god\God make this law up? Seems like the duty of a peace-keeper, not the creator of heaven and earth. How does God know, what actions qualify as stealing and which ones do not? Do not lust after another's wife? I can see how such a thing can cause complications, though i doubt the All-maker would create this law. Would God even know about marriage? Would he even care? I know if i could create gigantic stars, entire planets and species, i wouldn't care about people marrying. It seems like such a trivial matter, when compared to the powers, and duty of a god. Do not worship others or idolise other things? Again, why? Is God that petty, it gets offended when man worships something else? Surely, if there is but one God, then regardless of what name you call it, what image you think it has etc, you are still worshipping exactly the same God. that is how i see it. It seems like an extremely human thing, not a godly quality, humans desire loyalty, why would God demand it, why would he need it or care about it? Keep the Sabbath day Holy? This translates, in my eyes, to worship me. Why would he demand this? Why does God make it his business to dictate, what days a person can or can't do things? Again, seems more of a human thing, rather than a universal creator. Surely a maker would be more interested in seeing how it's wards evolve and live without it's intervention. Not demanding weekly praise, or even daily. Do not Murder? As i said before, good for a law, but would a god or God make up this law? really? Would it need to? Why create death, if you're going to tell your creations not to kill each other? Why make them envious, bitter, jealous etc? Why build them from the foundation of an animal? More of a human law, and less of a divine one in my eyes. I see why such laws were invented, by man. Though i do not see the reason for the existence, if attributed to a god or the God. if i was God, i would be more interested in seeing how my creations and wards acted without my help or laws. For example - Ant farms, watching them can be interesting, seeing how they act alone. When you start interfering it just screws everything up, and drowning them is only amusing for the brief time they remain alive. If anyone could shed any light, as to why these laws are still seen as divine laws by religions, i would very much appreciate it. Thank you more

Resolved Question: If gay marriage harms the institution of marriage why does Massachusetts now have the lowest divorce rate?

Massachusetts was the first US state to recognize the fact that all citizens are entitled to the civil right of marriage. Since same sex marriages began in Massachusetts over 5 years ago the divorce rate in that state has dropped steadily year after year. Massachusetts now has the lowest divorce rate of any state in the USA. http://www.talk2action.org/story/2006/7/13/14120/4811 The divorce rate in Massachusetts is now as low as the US divorce rate was in 1940. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/mardiv.htm http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bruce-wilson/divorce-rate-in-gay-marri_b_267259.html In my home state of California a coalition of religious groups sponsored Proposition H8 to take away the existing right of gay couples to marry. One reason given was that gay marriage would destroy the institution of marriage. Some Christian groups claimed that gay marriage would destroy the institution of marriage. Is the reduced divorce rate evidence of the harm done, or does it indicate that the sky has not actually fallen? Which religions do you believe are entitled to decide who may and may not have equal rights under the law? more

Resolved Question: Confused about rights to my property at old address?

I'll try to not make this too lengthy, but it's a complicated situation. My ex-boyfriend and I were living together up until about 2 1/2 months ago. He broke up with me and kicked me out. I had to move back in with my parents, and since their house was about 45 minutes away, I only brought as much with me as would fit in my step-dad's car. My ex told me he'd bring me my stuff [I'm having his baby so we decided to be civil with each other, so I trusted him like the dumby I am. Also, he has a truck and some things like my couch needed to be brought on a truck]. After a few weeks he brought a bunch of stuff, mostly clothes. But all-in-all it was only a fraction of my belongings. He has kept telling me over and over "next weekend" or something similar. So last weekend I told him was his final chance to bring my things or I'd get ugly about it. That's exactly what happened---another excuse, he never showed. So I IMed him and we had a big argument about it....and he eventually agreed to let me come get my things as opposed to me waiting for him to show up [like I'm going to believe THAT anymore]. But he's avoiding me now. I have a friend who will drive me up there and help me get the heavy things like my couch, tables, etc because he has a big truck I can use, but he needs some advance notice of when I'll need him. So I asked my ex to tell me when he will be home in the upcoming days and he's blatantly avoiding me. He lives about 45 minutes away, and he's not talking to his family [who agreed to help me however they could], so I have no clue when he's going to be home for me to get my things. So here are my questions about the situation: My ex said something to me about having 30 days to get my things or legally he doesn't have to give them back. But a friend of mine told me that would only be true in a situation where I was renting, left the property, and a landlord could throw my stuff out after 30 days. So I don't know what the law is on the matter for sure. Hopefully my friend is right, because this obviously isn't going to be made easy for me. So what are my rights to my property should this get any uglier? And any advice as to who to go to or how to go about all of this would be greatly appreciated. All I can think to do is try to find out his work schedule and go up there with my friend one evening he's off work and hope he's there. (I'm in West Virginia by the way) more

Resolved Question: What do you think about a debate about the NY Muslim center where a civil rights activist says?

that he doesn't want the Muslims to be tolerant of us, but wants us to be tolerant of them? I am asking this because it was a liberal civil rights activist who made that statement. It was Michael Gross vs. Pamela Geller http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2010/08/hannity-geller-vs-gross-on-ground-zero-mosque.html He is making the point that the Muslims don't have to think anything about our feelings, after the point was made that all over the world we are expected to think about their feelings, about such things as depictions of Muhammad, and staying out of their Sharia ideas. I think that staying out of their ideas to cut off heads or stone people to death or to put fatwahs out on people who depict Muhammad would be the same as staying out of the politics of Iran or N. Korea when they arrest people under false pretenses. Former President Jimmy Carter is in N. Korea today to try to get someone released, and President Clinton went there last year to retrieve the two reporters. So why should we be tolerant of such things that are intolerant of civil rights, of international law, or of simple respect for 3000 people dead in the name of Islam? more

Resolved Question: I am a Republican/my wife is a democrat. I am white/she is Mexican we had a son today?

Today my wife had a baby, she is 30 and I am 58, she is an anchor baby of Mexican parents that swam the Rio Grande 33 years ago and have amnesty from Reagan's program, I am a white boy of German and Welch ancestors who emigrated in the 19th century to the USA, my great grandfather a civil war vet, my grandfather a World War I vet, my father a vet from World War II in Patton's tank corp, and me a vet of Vietnam. The boy is a pure mix, black hair, light skin, gray eyes so far. He is a mix in America of two different worlds that are very much in the lime light today. What is your opinion of my son? What is your opinion of my wife, and what is your opinion of my in laws. By the way since they came to the USA they are very hard working people who have raised a family. The other question is should we have married, before she got pregnant we got married, we are both in the car business, met, fell in love, and got married. Open Question: The Mosque in New York, Lessons?

If I'm correct,The Spanish inquisition was religion being used as a political purifier. Religions in history have expanded and collapsed. Some wars have become eternal-Mid East series. If the building of a mosque at a site is likely to cause a civil religious war, within 5 to ten years after completion, should the host law not have a veto power to convert this structure to an 'all religions history center' to save our offspring from war as in the middle east? Is someone so determined to crack America, that the means do not matter? Are the leaders being black mailed or bribed to take on their chosen sides? more

Resolved Question: Is the following reasonable suspicion ? ( Arizona 's law )?

1. Suppose a person (male) is stopped at a checkpoint. The officer asks for the driver's license and registration, the driver gives those to him. The officer checks the license and registration, and they are valid. Also, a woman is sitting next to the driver and two small children are sitting in the back, talking. Does the officer has reasonable suspicion that the driver is an illegal immigrant? 2. Now, also assume the driver is Hispanic, does not speak English very well. The woman (also Hispanic) next to him does not speak English at all and the two children in the back are speaking Spanish. Does the officer has reasonable suspicion that the driver is an illegal immigrant? 3. Are civil rights violated if in the second case, the officer asks for documentation proving legal status? e.g. passport, visa, I94, etc.4. Does the answer in 3 depend on whether or not the driver is an illegal immigrant or not?"I don't understand the fuss over this law.I was born and raised in the U.S. and if for any reason the cops see fit they can stop me and ask me for my ID.I have been the passenger in the car on more than one occasion and was asked to show my ID.No one was breaking the law or anything. We were stopped at a check point on our way to the beach. They do this because people drink and drive out that way all the time.So what is the big deal." Thanks for your time, but please, read the questions. Would it have been ok if the officer asked about your legal status, passport, etc? What about if there were only Hispanics in the car that spoke almost no English? more

Open Question: Husband lapsed Catholic, me baptised Christian. can he get an annulment if he is dishonest party?

Have very religiously rigid Catholic mother in law. I am second wife of a very lapsed husband who was divorced when we met.He got ex to say she asked for the divorce to protect his relationship w/family although it was he who asked and cheated. He did not get annulment from ex before marrying me in civil ceremony, but I found a Greek Catholic priest who gave him communion without confession and his folks told him he'd burn in hell when he married me. He has cheatedfrom the outset of our marriage and dumped me. Even though I am not the guilty party, the mom is insulting me by insinuating that though I am a baptised Protestant and the only practising Christian in the marriage, because my husband lied to get me to marry him, and didn't enter into the marriage honestly, HE gets to divorce and annul marriage to ME after six years! I am going to fight this not to be vindictive, but because I did enter the marriage for life and love, gave everything to make it work, and it didn't. I accept that, and probably will divorce eventually. Husband isn't seeing anyone else, so remarriage for him is not a problem right now. Is it fair or even true that I can be made out to be an unclean party as it were, to satisfy a ritualistic, not spiritually pure, reason? After we married, it became clear my husband never intended to remain faithful, loved my bank account more than me, and actually treated marriage almost as a joke. Why does he get a pass from the church, or does he? Can I tell my mother in law to where to put her Vatican II loopholes? more

Open Question: An independently run auto body repair shop wont pay for accidental damages they caused, what should I do?

Revised question An independently run auto body repair shop wont pay for accidental damages they caused, what should I do? I went to get a quote to get some things fixed on my car at an auto repair shop. Before going there, I did not know anything about his reputation. No work was performed and nothing was signed. While there, when showing the manager what I wanted fixed, through a freak accident, a nut flew off a hand buffing tool. This worker was using it about 10 feet away which hit my car leaving a noticeable 1/8" deep dent, breaking through the paint, and exposing the raw metal underneath. See 4 photos if you want: http://s844.photobucket.com/albums/ab10/incatradr/CarDents/ The owner wants to fix the damage on the quarter panel instead of cashing me out. I received 6 estimates from other shops to fix this, who quoted $300-600 to fix it, most around $400. I later learned that the shop that did the damage is the cheapest (lowest priced) shop around. They gave me varying answers on the paint warranty, first 2 years, then 1 year. Other shops said the price low-ballers use lower quality paint that won't last. Other shops said when you get your car repainted, you can go the cheap way, such as if you want it to look nice enough to resell it, or the more expensive way such as if you plan on keeping it longer term. I don't trust this shop who did the damage and also worry if the paint won't match the other part of the car. To suggest that I should simply have him “fix” it is an unwise response because he has proven himself untrustworthy. Furthermore, even if there was a warranty, with the way he operates he might not be around when its time to do warranty repairs. Even if he is, he is not the type of person who acts responsible for his actions. When I insisted he cash me out for $200, which is far less than any of the other shops quoted he still refused. He tried to say its only $30 worth of damage. He tried to tell me its the guys fault who was using the tool that hit my car, because he's a contractor. I call BS. All his employees were wearing similar uniforms. I told the owner my relationship was with his shop, not one of his employees and he needs to take responsibility for his workers. I told him it would be far cheaper for him to settle than this becoming a legal matter. He tried to blow me off, took my number and said the "contractor" who did the damage would call me. Of course he never did. I didn't see a business license posted, as I believe required by law. What should I do? Call the police? I know its a civil matter, but would they come? Would it scare him into submission? Would the police come in order to force him to produce his ID to me? Take him to small claims court in Houston TX? Post on Craigslist where he advertises to warn others until he settles with me? Go to his shop and refuse to leave until he pays me off? Other options? Filing with the BBB is worthless as all they would do is forward my complaint to him. Im moving later this week about 4 hours away, so to return to Houston for court would be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. How do I get him to make this easy for both of us?? RevisedFirst 2 answers are terrible. Racer22: MY insurance company isn't responsible for this as it was 0% my fault. Besides, my deductible is over $500 so it wouldn't apply anyway. HowardL: I WAS the one who offered the $200 number for him to settle to pay me and he refused. All he wants to do is "fix" it and ONLY at his shop. Like I said, I received several quotes that ranged from $300-700, so your suggestion it can be done for less than $200 in a QUALITY manner is wrong. I need to get some answers from people with better reading comprehension skills please. If a doctor you meet at a bar stabs or shoots you, then he offers to fix it, should you go for that? It would be insane to accept. By the same token, you shouldnt have to go to the same repair "doctor" who caused your damage, as there is inherent bias. more

Use the following to answer questions 13-14: Lyres, Cheeterz, and Phools, attorneys-at-law, specialize in three areas: criminal, civil, and family law. When specifications for a new computer system were established, the criminal law division needed 60% of the capacity, civil law 25%, and family law 15%. The partners agreed that the fixed costs of the computer department would be allocated on these percentages. Variable costs for the computer department would be allocated on the number of computer minutes each division used. The computer department's budgeted fixed costs are $700,000, and the budgeted variable costs $150,000. The firm estimates that 400,000 minutes of computer time will be used next period. Note: Cost allocation rates are computed to 3 significant digits. 13If the family law division uses 57,000 minutes of computer time, what is the total amount of computer department costs that will be allocated to the family law division? A)$126,375. B)$127,500. C)$121,125. Ok, I filed a Sexual Harassment civil case against my former college administrator who forced me to have coerced sex with him. I filed to dismissed my case so I could find a Sexual Harassment attorney to properly represent me. I did state the case laws in my Sexual Harassment case and I also stated the facts and events. When I find the right attorney could he/she file a Motion to Reopen my case since it's been closed in 06/2008, or do they have to file a new Sexual Harassment case and there is new evidence for my civil case. more

Voting Question: what path to go? career choice?

Hi, I'm currently a student attending community college in miami and have come to a conclusion that i do not want to go along with my original choice of civil engineering as a career.I am in my second year of college and have found that i am interested in medicine and law. I am having trouble choose between the two, If i were to go the medicine path I would be interested in P.A-physician assistant or Pharmacy. But i also like law and always have wanted to become a lawyer from a young age, I am the type of person who analyzes before they talk and take in peoples opinions and love to debate if i feel i am right, i am also good at convincing and bringing up good points in a argument. the only thing holding me back from law is that i read online and it seems there is not a good job outlook for lawyers, i have already started college and currently have a 2.5 gpa i am also 21 years old. the reason why i have such a low gpa is because i really had no idea what i wanted to do with my life so i would not take school serious, i know am focused and know i want to either become a attorney/lawyer or a PA or pharmacist. im really confused and any help and suggestions from you guys on these jobs will really come in handy and help me make one of the hardest decisions i have had to make in my life, actually THE hardest decision i have made to this day Thanks, more

Voting Question: Could someone grade my SAT essay? (:?

Please score out of six or out of twelve. Topic: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? Response: "Listen to your parents. Obey your parents." This is the mantra we all hear practically from birth. While it is certainly true that we should respect and carefully consider the opinions of those who are wiser and more experienced then us, in order for change and progress to occur in society we must also sometimes challenge those in charge. Challenging authority and freely speaking up for what you believe in are two of the most essential elemnts of any functioning democracy. By thinking critically and refusing to blindly accept the status quo, people ensure that the world keeps improving. Such challenges to authority have been essential in the course of human, and particularly American, history. The country was founded in the first place because colonists refused to continue to be bullied and mistreated by a disinterested, tyrannical king. Then, hundreds of years later, better rights for African Americans were finally achieved because of a massive civil rights movement of ordinary people who realized the unfairness of the current situation and set out against the establishment to change it. Of course, their are always people uncomfortable with the idea of questioning leaders and old ideas. It is human nature to be uncomfortable with change and soothed by the status quo. Additionally, some worry that by questioning the perfection of an established, practice, law, or leader, people will somehow denegrate or destroy it. For instance, many believe that questioning any of their country's policies is "unpatriotic" or "treasonous". However, acknowledging the flaws in something, is the only realistic, intelligent way of looking at the world. Along with the fact that it is an expression of people's essential freedoms, admitting imperfections is necessary before they can be corrected. Only then can progress and positive change be made in this deeply flawed world. Thus, people should not mindlesslly accept the world in its current state, but should instead look at everything around them critically and honestly in order to discover what is perfect the way it is and what simply must be improved. more

Resolved Question: Is Obama's assault on civil rights as bad or worse than Bush's?

Guantanamo forever!!! The administration wants to add just four words -- "electronic communication transactional records" -- to a list of items that the law says the FBI may demand without a judge's approval. refusing to prosecute CIA agents who used torture ordering the assassination of an American citizen the legislation invested the Secretary of Defense with sweeping authority to withhold any visual images depicting the government’s “treatment of individuals engaged, captured, or detained” by U.S. forces—no matter how egregious the conduct depicted or how compelling the public’s interest in disclosure. the administration has displayed a decidedly mixed record resulting, on a range of issues, in the very real danger that the Obama administration will institutionalize some of the most troublesome policies of the previous administration – in essence, creating a troubling 'new normal.' http://www.aclu.org/files/assets/EstablishingNewNormal.pdf more
