Open Question: Why does my 2004 Impala shake when going above 50 mph?

I have a 2004 Impala base model with the 3.4 liter v6 engine. I recently (within the last three weeks) got new front brake pads and rotors and a new left wheel bearing (or wheel hub). I also got my tires rotated from the back to the front. Before my tires were rotated my car never shook at all on the highway or at high speeds. Ever since my tires got rotated I feel a shake in the steering wheel. It starts to do this around 50 mph, but at 60 mph and above it is really bad. All I am doing is putting the gas on and driving straight. I took my hand off the wheel when the car was going 60 mph and I could see the wheel shaking. I have aftermarket aluminum rims on my car and those were put on back in January 2010. Also both of my tires were pretty much even in terms of psi (one was at 29, the other was at 30, not enough of a difference to cause that shaking). When I drive on city streets at 40-45 mph, the car is fine and does not shake at all. Also my left tie rod was never replaced, my right tie rod was back in summer of 2008. I need advice on what could be causing this because. Any suggestions would help. Thanks. more

So I had a Prius (black, custom tint, custom rims) which I loved! Then I had 3 kids and did a little research and found one brand of car seat (Sunshine kids, Radian 65 in case you are wondering) which I could fit three across. I was even able to barely fit a double jogger (BOB duallie) in the back. I was feeling pretty good about how I had managed to turn my Prius into a "family" car (more like a clown car). Then I got rear-ended on the freeway and my beautiful Prius was determined to be a total loss :(. We were all OK, but now I have no car and I feel like the "man (possibly woman/non-gendered deity) upstairs" was saying "hey lady, you have 3 kids since you won't give up the Prius, let me take care of that for you" - SMASH! Now I have no car and I am still kind of fighting the minivan option, but I really like how a lot of minivans have rear bucket seats so you can separate two kids in the front and the third kid can walk through to the back row and you still have additional seating for friends/family. I know that the Buick Enclave has this layout and looks great but it is too pricy (did I mention that my Prius was paid off and now I can't afford a car payment because I have a house payment and tuition). New car really needs to be around 15K. Any other suggestions for a family of 5 with 3 kids in car seats (ages 4.5, 2.5 and 1) would be most welcome!!!!P.S. My car's a '98 V6 coupe. I have rims, so I'm just looking for tires; mine are worn and sorely lacking in the tread department! I don't race it at all, just drive it on highways every day on my commute to work. I'm looking for tires that'll go the distance and be safe to drive in the rain, etc, AND are also as affordable as possible. (Also, the stock ones are 17" - can I put 18" ones on my car too, or would that harm the performance of the car in any way?) more

Open Question: small trailer brakes, min wheel/rim size?

i have two trailers that both use the 12" x 4.80" rims. a boat trailer and a small cargo trailer. neither of the trailers has any type of braking system. lately my dad has been using the cargo trailer behind his '04 accord frequently. and when its even got just 200 lbs you can feel that thing PUSH the honda when he tries to stop. i am very much scared he will rear end somebody..... possibly with me in the car. i know brakes, i am ASE certified on hydraulic, electric and pneumatic braking systems. i have experience with surge and electric brakes on light trailers. welding is also not a problem. putting a new tongue piece needed for surge brakes is not a big deal. 1. is there a braking system that fits in those little 12 x 4.80 wheels? if not, what is the smallest i can get brakes with? 13" rim? 2. if i increase tire diameter, rubbing wheel wells may become an issue. is there an easy way to drop the axle lower and provide room that way, or is cutting the wheel wells off and just welding them up higher a better option? 3. will i want, or need, to change the axle to one that works with the brake backing plate? 4. i prefer electric brakes. my truck has a controller already, i can wire one in the accord easily enough. do electric brakes come in the same small sizes as surge brakes? i am skilled and knowledgable in what needs done to make it happen. what i dont know is what options i have with the current wheels, if any, or what the minimum size is and what all i need to convert over to that size. please dont answer unless you know what you are talking about.i thought axle swap may be the best method. thanks for that much. any idea of a place to order or salvage the proper length of axle? not sure of the width of the wheels, trailer is 4' wide. brakes locking. that was part of why i was thinking electic brakes to begin with. fine tune able, and supposedly some controllers somehow know better and act like ABS. least thats what i was told about the one in my truck, and i have never managed to lock its trailer up no matter how i set the controller. mine has a base setting, and then a quick level change mode. i was thinking a controller like that, level 1 when empty and higher level as load increases. surge brakes, i have seen ones with a key to lock it so it doesnt apply when backing up. is there one that can be locked like that but w/o a loseable key for when its empty? i could probably make something up to lock it and prevent from applying too, with the right design of surge brake tongue peice. more

my 2001 honda civic coupe has some 17'' rims on it and have low profile tires on it and this noise started yesterday i left my car in the parking lot for a long time and when i got back in it that night it stated to make a noise towards the back tire but than it went away, as soon as i got home and was pulling in my driveway slowly i can hear all these noises like its rubbing or its sometimes like a squeaky noise by the front tires im not sure what it is im pretty sure its not the brakes but not sure what to do. My girlfriend's not so bright 19 yr old realized last night that when it first rains the roads get slick. While attempting to make a right turn he slid his 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer into the median. Of course he said he wasn't speeding but after looking at his car I'm doubtlful. The front driver tire is flat because the impact broke the rim. The wheel is also pushed back to where I can't turn it to the right. The rear driver side tire is also flat but I don't see any damage to the rim. He doesn't want to report it to the insurance because his premium will be out of the world. So it doesn't cost him an arm and leg and me too much time, what should I be looking for once I get the tire off? We plan on calling a bone yard for a rim and replacing both tires. more

Nissan Versa S Hatchback Color: White Year: 2009 Miles: about 20k Interior: Beige Microfiber This is pretty much the base model with the exception of the 1.8 engine and CD player. Tires with hubcaps, no center console/armrest. I LOVE the way this car looks on the outside, it's different and unusual and really cute! I also like that it is a newer car and has a factory warranty on it. The one thing I would change is that it's lacking storage space. I also would buy new rims and tint the windows. 2005 Volvo s80 T6 Premier Front Wheel Drive I hit a pothole going 40mph and popped my tire and bent my rim, I did not feel the car bottom out but after 4days the car is now leaking some liquid on my driveway and has now stained my driveway. I looked under the car and its leaking in the middle a little past the engine. The liquid is clear and gooey but when placed on a white surface it turns a darkish color like a tan. Can someone please tell me what this is and if it's a serious issue that needs to be taken care of? more

Resolved Question: Why do beads have to be "broken"?

I guess I don't understand why it is necessary to pry at the bead of a tire to get it to come off the wheel. Can't you just deflate the tire by the valve stem, and then you can pull the tire off? Or is the tire like, melted to the rim, I don't understand this. I've never mounted a tire. How does this work? I always thought the tire was just held on by the friction of the tire bead hooked under the lip on the rim while it is under pressure. Also, while I am at it, what are those little clips called that are affixed to tire and the rim, like a bead clip of sorts. Are those necessary? I have a tire that is leaking air, and it is the only tire on my car that DOESN'T have one of those clips. more

Me and my cousin got a notarized letter for a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado that was under his name. He was gonna give it back to the dealer but i asked if i could take over the payments until the truck his paid off, which will then be placed under my name. Which sounded good at the time since i didn't have a car. So we got a notarized letter agreement between us that i am fully 100% responsible for the truck as is. And that the only way the truck will taken or given back was if i was late or wasn't making full payments. In which i was on time and made all my payments in full. He recently fillied bankrupt and put the truck under his bankruptcy which then left me without a car. I invested close to $7,000 in car I thought was gonna be mine. Excluding insurance and maintenance to the vehicle. I also gave him $700 for the rims and accessories in the truck. I gave the truck back and i am without a car now. Just looking for a little advice on my situation. I apologize in advance for my use of car lingo, as you will likely be able to tell I am not very knowledgeable in anything to do with automobiles. So my husband has made some alterations on our leased Mazda (done without my knowledge) and I am a little concerned that we may be charged, or our agreement voided for what he has done before we can buy out. For instance if they do the inspection before the buy out, or if they see it for regular maintenance (which we have confirmed already we do not have to do through them), or if we get into an accident and have to claim insurance. First of all, it's a four year term with a fairly small buy out and we only decided to lease as our finances could not support otherwise at the time, it was all the dealership would offer us. And he has also kept all original parts where applicable. What he has done : Painted front and back grill red (yuck - its on a silver car) Replaced the grill on the original body kit to a silver mesh (using silicone glue-not the grill he painted) Painted the wiper blades red (i know, what was he thinking!) Changed the exhaust tip, or added to it Stuck deco's on the car, by sticky tape Replaced the antenna Put a sub in for the stereo (and is planning to change the original deck) Put our alloy rims on the car, they are an inch larger than the original rims, i think 17" So, the question really is.. Will I be charged, or my contract voided for any of these changes if seen before the term is up by the dealership, if so what? And if I am bringing the car in to complete the buy out paperwork and pay for the car would they still charge me? more

My girlfriend took me in and took care of me and had sexual relations with me. So I was young and always confused but I always went along with what she said because she was good to me. So my issue is she can be abusive at times. She forced me to have sex 5 men. This isn't the first time we have had orgy's and what not. (Which I never liked, or even agreed to) But this is the first time she made me have sex with so many men at one time. So I was crying while we were in bed sleeping and she heard me, and told me that each of the men paid 20,000 dollars to sleep with me, so she had got paid 100,000. She then went on to tell me how they paid her an extra 50,000. She said she would give me the 100,000 dollars after I had butt implants. I did not want any cosmetic surgery because I am fine with my body. But again, I did it anyways. She said when we got back to the U.S. after my surgery she would give me the 100,000 dollars. When we got back she had my car fixed. She put 26 inch rims on my Chevy Caprice and had a pink paint job done, with white and pink interior, tv's, and a new stereo system. I love my car and I thanked her for it. So when I asked her for my money she gave me 3000 dollar. I was livid at this point and she replied that that was all that was left after the surgery, the plane tickets, the hotel stay for her, and after fixing up my car. I never wanted the surgery! This was something she wanted, so why did she take it out of my money that I earned that night? She even told me I was silly to think that she would give a girl as young as myself 100,000 dollars. She has always done things like this, and I allow it because I am used to being abused and she is financially stable and has a lot to offer me. Do you all think that I should stay in this relationship with her? I do love her, but she controls everything. How can I get her to understand my feelings? more

I am 18 years old and I just joined the Army Reserve recently and I will start going to drill in Oklahoma City next month. I live in Farmington, Arkansas (a 225 mile drive) and I've never had a car before and I was wondering what a good fuel efficient car would be that performs well on a highway. I'm not looking for a souped up car with rims, all I care about right now is a decent car that will do what I need it to. I will start making $1800/month (minus taxes) starting in February and I will make almost $300 (minus taxes) every time I attend drill up until February (when BCT starts, then I'll be making $1800 PLUS $300). So that's my price range. Does anybody have any suggestions as to good safe, fuel efficient cars that won't break the bank? THANKS! :D more

Resolved Question: 2006 Subaru STI Car Dilema?

Hey, everyone I'm from NY however i saw a Subaru STI 2006 33k miles but its out of state, however its 3hrs away drive, the car is asking for like 23k around average for every dealership which is around 25k, book values are around 26-27k. However this car has been modded it seems just cosmetically like (rims, intake, exhaust, intercooler, hood, in dash dvd, and a Blow off valve) - I'm not sure if it has an aftermarket turbo, so i was just wondering if i should bother to go down there tomorow morning and make the 6hr round trip to go see it?? I mean in my opinion i was thinking if its just cosmetically wise, it'll be ok, if engine performance has not been tampered with, but with an intercooler front mounter im assuming that it has to be an aftermarket turbo, but its low miles. Also the car is 33k miles but the carfax shows 3owners. 1st owner- had it for 2years it showed and like 8,000miles(babied), and 2nd owner- it didn't show that it was purchased so i'm assuming it was sold on the side to maybe his friend or something but it showed 16,000 for 2nd owner in 3months so im thinking he drove alot. 3rd owner- updated title with 17,000miles when he got it, and now its being sold with 33k miles. So i was wondering if its worth going to see this car with its aftermarket, weird milage, and is there anything about Pennsylvania that i should know about, i heard a couple years ago there was flooding, but PA is mostly highways, so im pretty sure its all highways and should i worry about it?!? What do you guys think?!? more

My teen blew 2 tires and wrecked the rims on her 99 Pontiac Grand Am. They were 225/50/16's in size. I found a set of four tires and rims from a Camaro that are 205/55/16's that have 75% tread left on them for $210. Would these work on her car and is that a decent deal??Appreciate the answers, guys! And for the record, the Camaro rims are way nicer than the ones we bought the car with (LOL) but at that price I won't complain too much... especially if I make her pay for half! more

Resolved Question: what's the better car purchase for me used or new?

Right now I'm looking at purchasing one of these two trucks. Also please do not try to convince me to buy a different vehicle, I have my heart set on this vehicle, just dont know whether or not I want used or new. Used: 2008 Honda Ridgeline RTL (top of line model with dual climate zone, power driver seat, leather, towing pkg) added extras by previous owner: 20" rims (nothing I would have bought myself, but it looks nice), side step running boards, ipod connector, cargo bed extender, tint. Condition - good condition exterior/interior. two door dings, small chips from what looks like normal driving. 19.5k miles. Asking price: $27.5k New: 2010 or 2011 model (if I wait another 3-5 months). Honda Ridgeline RT (Base model without any of the bells & whistles listed above or added extras) asking price: $30k for 2010, 2011 model est price is $31k. - Part of me thinks the used car is a great deal because it has a lot of great features, top of line model, and it's cheaper. Also compared to KBB value it's pretty good deal. However, for only $2.5-3.5k more I can purchase a new car (although base) that will be 2-3 model years newer, and having a new car is always nice too. What would you choose? Is the used car even worth considering? ~G more

Voting Question: problem with rear axle seals?

i recently had the rear axle seals changed on my 98 mustang because there was oil behind the brake. i had them replaced by the guy who always does all the work on my car so i trust him. but there still seems to be oil leaking from somewhere and its dripping onto my rim as i drive. could there be something else wrong? i had the work done last wednesday so is this just excess oil? thanks!i dont think it's brake fluid, but how would i tell for sure. what does it look like? the stuff on my car looks just like new oil more
