Resolved Question: Is there any editing needed?

Alcohol and Propaganda is not a Match According to FAS, “alcohol is to be blamed for 100,000 deaths each year.” Alcohol has become a dependent source for teens and many adults. Drinking effects mind processes and the human body awfully. The use of these advertisements is a major source for the public to take alcohol as a positive consuming product. Alcohol should be banned from the internet, television, and print advertisements because these campaigns promote a substance that causes awful health issues and death, and financial issues. It is true, alcohol campaigns are being displayed throughout America and both adolescents and adults nationwide are being introduced to alcohol, a harmful substance when misused, through these advertisements. For everyone, the body has either very little or zero tolerance to alcohol. When alcohol is overused, the mind loses its ability to make good quality decisions and the organs of the human body get wounded. This can result in many bodily illnesses, diseased, and perhaps cancer that all can cause death and a miserable life. The inability to make good quality decisions can also cause many troubles ranging from the inability to maintain a relationship to being the cause of a car collision from driving under the influence. Furthermore, the use of these commercials is also advertising a substance that can cause a financial crisis. Alcohol becomes addictive to many people because it brings the mind to a relaxed state temporarily relieving stress, anxiety, and more. Overtime, as more alcohol is being consumed by the human body, the human body is building tolerance to the alcohol. When the body is building tolerance to the alcohol, the body is required to have more alcohol in order to enter the relaxed state that had been previously experience and in order to consume more alcohol, more money will need to be thrown away. This will result in a financial loss and can cause a financial crisis which can cause anything from having again, a difficulty time maintaining a relationship to having to get rid of any possessions one may have. In the final analysis, Alcohol should be banned from all advertisements because they promote a substance that can cause awful consequences including health problems, death, and financial issues. The fact that these advertisements have persuaded many to consume alcohol clearly shows that these advertisements have a part in the cause of many deaths, health issues, and financial issues. Should advertisement companies promoting detrimental products be allowed to advertise? Would one want to be in charge of choosing whether or not he can save millions of lives and choose not to? more

Resolved Question: Are you glad Obama has mandated providing your Social Security number when buying a TV, plane ticket or Ipod?

CNN: Stealth IRS changes mean millions of new tax forms http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/21/smallbusiness/1099_deluge/index.htm?source=cnn_bin&hpt=Sbin The massive expansion of requirements for businesses to file 1099 tax forms that was hidden in the 2,409-page health reform bill took many by surprise when it came to light last month. But it's just one piece of a years-long legislative stealth campaign to create ways for the federal government to track down unreported income. "Just with business travel it would include hotels, rental cars," Henschke says. "Phone service: 1099. Computer service: 1099. Whoever does your postage meter: 1099. You do a little advertising, Yellow Pages: 1099. Your landlord: 1099. You might as well just keep them in your pocket and hand them out as you go around every day." Obamacare = F You, Pay Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ydqjqZ_3ocThe new law comes into effect in 2012.I believe we should provide Barack Hussein Obama's fake Connecticut Social Security number or perhaps the one his illegal alien aunt uses to claim public housing, food stamps and other welfare payments. http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=152773Most businesses are small businesses which would be subject to this tax compliance nightmare, not to mention an intrusive invasion of privacy. Then again, Obama would like nothing better than for third world illegals working at "too big to fail" corporations to obtain millions of American's SSN information and to destroy all small business. more

Voting Question: how can i reword this?

my daughter is driving while texting i have found these notes on the internet but i to make it so she understand im gonna have to reword this on i need help Texting on a cell phone is even more dangerous than talking. A study by Virginia Tech found that texting while driving on the highway increases the risk of having an accident twenty-three times. On average, a text message distracts a driver for about five seconds, which on a highway means about one-hundred yards. Off the highway, the University of Utah found that texting increases the risk eight times. 56% of teenagers admit to talking on their cell phones behind the wheel, while 13% admit to texting while driving. (Note: Because this information was given voluntarily by teens, actual cell phone use numbers may be much higher.) 48% of young Americans from 12-17 say they've been in a car while the driver was texting. 52% of 16- and 17-year-old teen drivers confess to making and answering cell phone calls on the road. 34% admit to text messaging while driving. In 2007, driver distractions, such as using a cell phone or text messaging, contributed to nearly 1,000 crashes involving 16- and 17-year-old drivers. Over 60% of American teens admit to risky driving, and nearly half of those that admit to risky driving also admit to text messaging behind the wheel. Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year. Almost 50% of all drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 are texting while driving. Over one-third of all young drivers, ages 24 and under, are texting on the road. Teens say that texting is their number one driver distraction. 'Texting' while driving is the act of composing, sending, or reading text messages, email, or making other similar use of the internet on a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, such as an automobile, truck, or train. The practice has been viewed by many people and authorities as dangerous. It has also been ruled as the cause of some motor vehicle accidents, and in some places has been outlawed or restricted people have to stop. Texting while driving leads to increased distraction behind the wheel. In 2006, Liberty Mutual Insurance Group conducted a survey with more than 900 teens from over 26 high schools nationwide. The results showed that 37% of students found texting to be "very" or "extremely" distracting. A study by the AAA discovered that 46% of teens admitted to being distracted behind the wheel due to texting. One example of distraction behind the wheel is the 2008 Chatsworth train collision which killed 25 passengers. The subsequent investigation revealed that the engineer had sent 45 text messages while operating the train. A 2009 experiment with Car and Driver magazine editor Eddie Alterman that took place at a deserted air strip showed that texting while driving had a greater impact on safety than driving drunk. While legally drunk, Alterman's stopping distance from 70 mph increased by 4 feet; by contrast, reading an e-mail added 36 feet, and sending a text added 70 feet.[1] In the UK in 2009 Gwent Police worked with film maker Peter Watkins-Hughes and production company Zipline Creative to create the graphic short film "Cow", as part of a campaign to stop texting while driving.[2] The film earned honors in the Advertising Age's weekly Creativity Top 5 videos [3] and became an overnight worldwide internet hit after being shown on the American news program The Today Show.[4] On August 29, 2007, Danny Oates was killed by a young driver of a car, allegedly texting while driving. The defense had argued that driver Jeffrey Woods had possibly suffered a seizure during the time of the accident. [10] On January 3, 2008, Heather Leigh Hurd was killed by a truck driver who allegedly was texting while driving. Her father Russell Hurd has been actively supporting a law in various U.S. states called Heather's Law that would prohibit texting while driving. [11] The 2008 Chatsworth train collision, which killed 25 people, and which occurred on September 12, 2008, was blamed on the operator sending text messages while operating the train.[12] In 2009, a crash on the MBTA Green Line of the Boston area was blamed on a driver who was texting. This occurred nearly a year after the Newton, Massachusetts rail accident, which occurred on May 28, 2008, and was blamed on the operator using a cell phone while operating the train. A day after talk show queen Oprah Winfrey focused on the dangers of texting while driving, two members of the Georgia House of Representatives introduced bills that would ban the practice. “Don’t tempt fate,” said Rep. Amos Amerson (R-Dahlonega), quoting Winfrey. “That text or call can wait.” Amerson and Rep. Allen Peake (R-Bibb County) introduced similar bills that will likely me more

Resolved Question: Is Columbia South Carolina Ready for an African-American Mayor?

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Seven of the eight candidates running for mayor gave their vision for the city Tuesday night. Voters filled a banquet hall in North Columbia to hear from those seeking election for mayor. As each person entered, they had a chance to write down a question of their own for the candidates. Each mayoral hopeful was given two minutes each to answer a series of those questions. Topics covered included the bus system, law enforcement, and how much power a mayor should have in office. To finish up, each candidate shared their number one priority if elected. Below you can read some of what they had to say. "I want to make sure that each one of your children and grandchildren have the same opportunities I had as a child. Our focus on our campaign is clear, we want to focus on, our priorities will be making sure we have a safe city," said Steve Benjamin. "You want safe, secure streets and homes and you want to know that your money is being spent responsibly by your city government. If you don't have those two things you don't have confidence and you don't have trust," said Steve Morrison. "Trim the budget, you know, get rid of any unnecessary items. Clean is the crime free neighborhoods, and of course that comes from funding the police department," said Sparkle Clark. "When I'm mayor of the City of Columbia, everybody will be heard, not everybody will be agreed with, and at no point will an individual "want" overwhelm a collective good," said Kirkman Finlay. "The first thing we have to do is fix the budget, period. We have no idea how much money we have, we have no idea where it's going," said Gary Myers. "My priorities are number one take care of the budget and our finances. Number two take care of our city employees. You gotta have city employees who care and want to stay here to take care of you," said Joseph Azar. "If we can have true civic involvement, and we can make people feel like their government does care about them, and does want to listen to them, I feel like that's the solution. Because right now there's not any money," said Aaron Johnson. Columbia's elections take place April 6th. Resolved Question: I can't tell if she likes me..?

so i have a crush on this woman and we have been hanging out because we are planning an advertising campaign for an event together. I notice we get a long really well and our meetings are really sociable and drag on for hours. I have really come to like her and enjoy being around her. She's pretty down to earth and if anything romantic happened between us I'd be open to dating seriously. Anyhow, I can't tell if she likes me. We've been having meetings at my apartment and her house(she lives with her folks) and I notice that she does things around me like stroke and play with her hair, initiate touching, bump me, solid eye contact, and moving her hair and body really close when getting up and sitting down. I wasn't sure where she stood though cause she is pretty friendly and professional. so I used sensual body language and a relaxed attitude while testing her personal space a little by pretending to have excuses to get closer and she didn't seem to mind and we'd touch legs hands, shoulders etc.. I thought there was a good chance that she might be attracted to me too. But then today we just had another meeting at my apartment and she was doing those things. But I noticed she sat leaning back with her legs pointed towards me but crossed away and she was not making as much eye contact talking and her bag was between us on my couch.not good signs i know... instead of making lots of eye contact she talked while looking at some random spot in the air. I noticed this and thought I might be watching at her too intently or something so I tried not looking at her during the conversation for a while and I noticed that afterward her eye contact was pretty strong. When she left she bumped into me playfully but then i got the feeling as I walked her out to her car she was pretty much on her way instead of lingering though we did talk a bit. and then i went back out again cause we had mentioned meeting again tomorrow with another person and she was cool with it but i realized there wasnt any real reason to meet so even though i wanted to hang out it came out like i was kinda reluctant to. And when I said bye it was cool. And then when I had gone back in she called me again and I was all happy but it was just to ask for directions. Anyhow Im kinda confused. During our meeting the conversation was still very friendly and animated and stuff and she also initiated touch by touching my hand and I returned it and there were times of feeling flirty or connected and close proximity, but it seemed like she was a lot less relaxed and connected than previously. One thing to note was that todays meeting started off awkwardly on her arrival and she complained about feeling weird and being on her period. Could that have something to do with the mixed signals. I offered her some chocolate to calm her nerves a little, and over the course she got a lot more relaxed. We actually got a lot done compared to other meetings where we bullshitted and gossiped a lot more. Anyhow, I know I shouldn't waste time analyzing all the little things so much reading into every little thing, but i guess it just annoys me that I can't figure out objectively what the situation is.. I guess it might still be too early to tell either way. arg. i really don't know.. So what do you guys think? What should I do next? more

Voting Question: Please help! Is this a good narrative essay?

This is my first narrative essay. Please tell me what I can do to improve this. Anything is helpful. Sorry the grammar is not perfect, I did this in a rush. My first visit to Tokyo was a life changing experience. I did not want to go to Tokyo and I expected it to be a dull and boring trip, but I was provided with an experience of a lifetime and a new view on life. Walking out of the air conditioned train station with my mother, a blast of hot humid air surprised me and nearly pushing me backwards. As I walked out onto the sidewalk, I gazed up to the sky and saw many tall glass-plated skyscrapers. “Mom!”, I exclaimed, “what are these tall buildings for?” “Well Kurt”, she replied, “these are office buildings, where businessmen work.” “Will I ever work in one of these buildings?” I asked. “If you work hard in school and try your best you will one day” she explained. Walking down the street, I was surprised by the hustle and bustle of city life, the amount of people on the sidewalk and the amount of cars on the roads creating a never ending traffic jam. The sounds of hammering from constructions sites, the loud blasting music from stores and restaurants, the sound of cars honking, people talking and advertising campaigns was like music to my ears. These were the real sounds of a big city. Walking around Tokyo and taking in the sights and sounds, as sweat ran down my forehead, drenching my shirt, I was speechless. The city felt like a never ending maze with streets that led to streets upon streets. Walking past an alley, I noticed homeless people digging through dumpsters and sleeping in old, dirty stained clothing. “Mom, why are those people homeless?” I asked. “Because they do not have a job and do not have any money,” she explained. “I don’t want to end up like that when I am older,” I added. “Work hard, get a good paying job and make lots of money. Then, you will not have to worry about being homeless,” she stated. After walking around parts of Tokyo, my mother and I walked to the nearest train station, which was crowded with people as usual. Buying train tickets was very confusing. There were so many flashing lighted buttons the ticket machine looked like a Christmas tree. Finally, after purchasing the tickets, we made our way over to the train which was filled beyond its doors. Two men, wearing white gloves and police like uniforms, pushed people into the train as they tried to get everyone in. After the chaos of getting onto the train was done, I could only notice how full the train was. “Why are there so many people on the train,” I asked quietly. “Because most of these people are going to and from their jobs,” my mom explained. The train was like a giant sauna and there were so many people no one could move. Luckily, our stop was next and I did not have to bear the train ride any longer. The walk to Tokyo Tower was peaceful and refreshing. The route to the tower was through one of the few parks in Tokyo and it felt like I was in the middle of a forest, not in a city. I could hear the branches swaying in the wind, the birds singing and the bugs buzzing. As I approached the tower and looked up, I was impressed by how the tower stood out like a diamond in the rough. As the elevator went up, the city began to emerge before my eyes and I felt at ease to be out of all the chaos. I felt like I was on top of the world looking down at a never ending concrete jungle. Looking out at the view, I felt mesmerized by all the tall buildings. “What kind of people live at the top those tall buildings,” I asked, as I kept my eyes glued to the view. “People who have worked hard all their life,” answered my mom. “Why do they try so hard?,” I retorted. “Because you only live once and you should do everything you can to make the most out of life,” my mother stated, hoping that I will do as she says. Starring at the view, I was impressed and inspired. Just like the never ending view of the city, I realized that there is a never ending amount of opportunities and possibilities in life. In conclusion, my visit to Tokyo turned out to be more than a trip. The visit changed me as a person, taught me what was important in life and that I should work hard for what I want because things do not come easily. In addition, my visit to Tokyo showed me that we only have one life, therefore, we should work hard and make the most of it. more

Resolved Question: Agree or Disagree: Obama's election was the result of false advertising?

Meaning do you think the Obama that was marketed to the American public in 2008 is the same Obama pursuing all his current policies. Here's a short list of flip flops: 1. Obama promised to have healthcare negotiations on C-SPAN......(obviously these negotiations are taking place behind closed doors.........hence the vote buying etc.) To be fair: cameras were allowed to film for a whopping ONE HOUR. http://www.breitbart.tv/c-span-ceo-white-house-has-allowed-only-one-hour-of-health-care-coverage/ 2. Obama campaigned AGAINST a federal mandate for individuals to buy private insurance.........(he now supports it........hmmmm) "I mean, if a mandate was the solution, we can try that to solve homelessness by mandating everybody to buy a house. The reason they don’t buy a house is they don’t have the money. " -Candidate Barack Obama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoSnqofelsQ 3. Obama campaigned AGAINST taxing "cadillac plans"...........(he now supports it) "John McCain calls these plans “Cadillac plans.” Now in some cases, it may be that a corporate CEO is getting too good a deal. But what if you’re a line worker making a good American car like the Cadillac? What if you’re one of the steelworkers who are working right here in Newport News, and you’ve given up wage increases in exchange for a better health care" -Candidate Barack Obama http://firedoglake.com/2010/01/07/cadillac-flip-flop-obama-was-against-health-plan-tax-before-he-was-for-it/ more

Resolved Question: Is the Supreme court ruling to open the door corporate campaign spending is actually good news for Democrats?

Thursday's decision to strike down restrictions on corporate campaign spending is actually good news for Democrats and bad News for Republicans. Since we associate Republicans and powerful corporations it's just another reason not to vote for a Republican. Just look at the Health Care reform it remains hostage by the Republicans and the big hungry dinosaurs the Insurance Companies. This is just a preview of how things are going to look if we are going to elect Republicans. I am not going elect a candidate advertise by exxon mobil when I go to pump gas to my car, because I expect what it means: higher gas prices and more pollution...I rather elect a candidate to which I contributed $20 dlrs. I'm conducting a poll myself so please answer honesty , I'm not a Republican nor a Democrat I hate both of them: would you like big corporations to dictate the laws in Washington? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my persuasive argument writing piece?

It's supposed to be a feature article.. i think it sucks ...and i think my english teacher is going to despise it too. here it is:Stop Commercialism now How many times have you surfed on the internet and not found yourself to come across many ads that have popped up on the page you were on or are on? Many advertisers are profiting from what reels us in, which are these many ads you hear or see on the TV, radio, internet, etc. All in all, it’s a two-sided affair. Say you are just checking your email and you see a thousand emails. Possibly, half of those are spam from those penny-pinchers out to get you and your money. So what should you do about this? Well, you have one of two options being the check all and delete button or moving all that unnecessary junk to the spam folder where it belongs and needs to stay. Commercialism is vastly becoming a problem not a success as many assume it to be. Studies show that 67% of teens buy items online and 37% of children do. Commercialism attacks the adolescent ages because they figure we are susceptible to any commerce that they are willing to throw at us. Also, many individuals assume this to be a more convenient way of purchasing anything and it being a faster way. That may be, but how do you know you are actually getting what you paid for? You’re wasting your precious time behind a glass screen. Purchase the more effective way, by going out into stores and getting what you need. Many politicians use commerce for their campaigns. You know those TV ads that always contradict that you need to vote for so and so for president instead of the other guy because he did whatever? This is a way of a scam to get money out of your pockets and into their hands. These ads are the ones that are appealing to hear or see, just an easier way to pull you in. Commercialism also costs too much money. Most of which is probably our tax dollars. The price goes up for a product if realized that it makes a certain individual sustain a cool image by using it or buying it. Many of these can be misleading, so any time you are gullible to believe one you are giving away money that could be used for something more important. Advertising takes up a lot of one’s time. We only have one life to live right? The average American spends at least 60 minutes reading, hearing or even watching ads on the television, radio, in magazines, etc. By the time that person comes of old age, 4 years of their life will be basically deducted away from under their feet. Some say that we are immune, too smart, and too savvy to fall for such. If so were true, we wouldn’t know so much of certain brand names, dress a certain way, buy the foods we eat, and our lives wouldn’t mirror the ads around us. In addition to that, we wouldn’t need pop-up blockers, virus protection programs, and firewalls to save us from all this commerce. So ask yourself this, are we really immune to what we see on the TV, hear on the radio, etc? If we really were, we wouldn’t feel the vanity of using these things to get a better self-image to fit in with the way society portrays us to be, which is all the same. It’s kind of a win-win situation at its best, honestly and ironically enough. On the contrary, you are helping yourself out somewhat the same way you are helping out these phony ads. Sure ads can help us out by providing vital information to us consumers, but there is way too much that we are exposed to. Ads can hide the fact of caring for each other, the environment, and the community. Many ads give off a bad message to viewers. Such as smoking meaning you are different in a good way than everyone else, you’re only cool if you drive a pricey car, and also making us think that you have to be mature to drink. These messages can cause conflict in families because they could or can influence the way a person in that family thinks. This could cause friction because of the choices that family member made due to the advertisement. In that case, who’s to blame here? It all depends on the situation. To blame for 90% of it would be the advertisement because it provoked them to make such a decision and the other 10% being lack of poor judgment and self-esteem that was made better by the advertisement. So for all this in mind, why do we really need commercialism anywhere? To pay the bills, to help finances, to help make it an easier, better, more convenient way to make purchases? All it does is cause problems. What does it really help? You’re not really earning anything but helping the advertiser earn your trust and money. So next time you fall for one of these, think of all the consequences that won’t cushion your fall. Whenever you see a pop-up that pops up on your screen, click the x button at the top right, whenever you see any junk email click the delete all button, whenever you hear an ad on the TV, radio, or any electronic device turn it off and read a book not a magazine, instead. You can do many things to avo more

Voting Question: Legal liability as an employee on stolen goods?

This summer I have been working as a costumed mascot. I got the job through an advertising company that was hired by a larger corporation to do campaign for them. This campaign consisted in part of me dressing up in a large costume. It paid relatively well, but I have run into a hiccup. The costume was stolen out of my car. The larger company will not claim the costume's loss on their insurance (the costume is worth $1,500), and the advertising company says that if their insurance will not allow them to claim it (or if the deductible that will occur outweighs the value of the costume), I will be responsible to pay the larger company the value of the costume. My question is: as a temporary employee of the advertising company, am I responsible to pay for the stolen costume. I don't believe I am, but I am not sure of the legality of the situation. Other background information: -The only document I ever signed for the advertising company was a W-9. -I placed a police report on the costume which I will be giving to the advertising company who will then give it to the insurance agency, and based on the information therein the insurance agency will determine what they will do. From my basic understandings, I am not responsible to pay this money (nor do I have it, being a poor college student who had to succumb to working a lowly costume gig for the summer to make some extra cash). For me, a similar example would be that at a previous job I had at a retail store, if something was stolen from that store, I was not liable to pay the price for it. Thank you for any and all help I receive! more

Resolved Question: As an atheist, how do you feel about the recent Scientology mass advertising campaign?

I’m actually not that sure if it is a ‘mass advertising campaign’ or just their usual advertising level; I’ve just some Scientology ads on Youtube and I was wondering what other atheists felt about them. I know Christians don’t like them but I put that down to the same reaction that a used car salesman would have if another used car salesman set up business in his town. But as an atheist, does it anger you? Especially considering, from what I saw of the ads, they seemed to be targeting adolescents going through that awkward experimental, personality development stage so many of us go through? Does it remind you of vultures circling a battlefield, waiting for unguarded corpses to defile? more

Resolved Question: What is the necessity for never-ending advertisements?

Do we really have to have commercials blaring at us constantly from day to day to day? They have almost completely taken over every facet of our senses. We see billboard after billboard, commercial after commercial. The incessant repetitiveness of these campaigns are useless. Sure...it's cool to announce a new product, or even an improved version. But why are companies worldwide spending millions of dollars on the bombardment. It already costs a lot of money to make the commercials and to get the broadcasters to air the promotions. I always enjoy seeing the Super Bowl commercials and i really think that is where the line needs to be drawn. On average a half-hour television program is only 20 minutes long. the remainder of the time is spread out from beginning to end for commercials(personally, i'd rather be watching the show that is on, than to watch some stupid commercial on erectile dysfunction and the little blue pill that can make it all better or the stupid accident lawyer commercials that really make me wanna get into an accident just so i'll have the chance to be killed or what about the condescending college commercials? there's another reason to commit suicide). That's ten frikkin minutes that could be added to the program itself! Commercials on our radio waves are just as bad. I find it really amusing how radio stations will get their Top DJs to promo their segment's sponsors. That itself is just a shortcut in advertising to curb but a meager fraction of the cost. Not to mention when i listen to the radio i want to hear a nice run of music. Not stupid commercials with a music break in between. i have this weird feeling that should advertising be brought down a couple of notches, the major companies would probably to be able to lower some of their prices on the merchandise they over-pay to advertise as it were. Advertising has us chasing things we don't need with money we don't have(which is where them payday and car title loans advertisements come in). Advertising is designed to convince Consumer America that they cannot live their life sustainably, or will never be considered successful, or will never be able to satisfy their wife without that particular product. The problem is that Consumer America believes them! How is it that we as a nation can be so gullible and naive? It's a never-ending, vicious cycle of deception.Perhaps i didn't explain myself correctly. I was basically asking what is the need for all this repetition in advertising. You see all these companies boast of their long-standing tenure in business. So, if we know they are here, why do they need to constantly announce their existance? I couldn't really care less whether or not this is a competition...and i really couldn't care less whether or not our advertising protocols are "tame", as some people tend to view this monstrosity. The fact of the matter, and coincidently my point, is repetitive advertising is useless and moot. Consumer America doesn't suffer from Alzheimer's (although i do believe Consumer America suffers from Down Syndrome) with our short-term memory out of synch. We can remember things...we don't need this bombardment. "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy [stuff] we don't need." -- Tyler Durden more

Resolved Question: Would you recommend this to a conservative?

If you've been booed, hissed, heckled or hollered at ... scathed, scapegoated, scanted or screamed at ... if you're the bane of blue states and a gall to all the Greens ... you may be feeling lonely, but you're certainly not alone. Author Harry Stein has written a book for the elephant in the room. It's called "I Can't Believe I'm Sitting Next to a Republican," and he calls it "a survival guide for conservatives marooned among the angry, smug, and terminally self-righteous." Which is to say: liberals. "You deal with a lot of people who pretty much hate your guts" simply because you disagree with them, says Stein, who lives in a suburban liberal enclave a few miles north of Manhattan, which generally shades a deeper blue than the rivers that surround it. Stein, a lifelong New Yorker, traveled the country talking to other conservatives about their woes and prepared a primer for people who are locked in political exile in their very own homes. That ranges from parents worried about the education their kids are getting in elementary school ("always the Indians, everything the Indians") to professors struggling to make it in the ivory tower. The trouble can put relationships on the chopping block too. Stein, who details his own rocky relationship with his father in the book, found he wasn't the only one suffering. "I sat down with a bunch of conservatives in San Francisco, (including) a gay man who was talking about what it was like being a gay conservative in San Francisco. "He said it's a lot harder being conservative than it is to be gay," Stein told FOXNews.com. "His friends all turned on him." To avoid that kind of reception, some secret right-wingers take the extra step of pretending to be in lock-step with those around them. One studio executive he interviewed posted Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama signs around his office, depending won which way the political winds were blowing during the presidential campaign. Advertising his actual beliefs would have been deadly, Stein says. "People out there understand that those positions are really dangerous -- they jeopardize your livelihood." Stein, who has very harsh words for the left-wingers he calls narrow-minded and provincial, says he grew up inside the church of liberalism and knows it from the inside out. "Growing up liberal is kind of a birthright. You come of age with that, and everyone in your family feels the same way and everyone you know feels the same way -- and to break apart from that is like leaving behind a religion." But a funny thing happened on the way to the ashram -- Stein says he met a few conservatives and came to like them for their politeness and their personal values. "As a person on the left I never ran into people on the right. It was really a revelation, it was an eye-opener when I actually started getting to know conservatives, that they weren't monsters." Stein's survival guide is set to come out June 22, but the release party might have to be a little bit subdued. "We'll see if I survive the book," he told FOXNews.com. "My car was keyed once already during the campaign (because of a bumper sticker), so we have contingency plans for hiding it over the next few months." more

Resolved Question: Is it too late to swap Obama for McCain?

Anyone who has ever wasted good money on a clunker only to drop the transmission 15 minutes after leaving the car-lot, knows the feeling. It's like a swift-kick in the groin followed by weeks of fist-pounding rage. It's called buyer's remorse; "Gawd, I wish I hadn't bought that piece of dogshite!" There are probably a lot of former-Obama supporters feeling that same agonizing sense despair now that President Rainbow has done an about-face on every campaign promise he made. So much for "truth in advertising", eh? What a disaster. Did anyone know it was gonna be this bad? For the record; I didn't vote for Obama because I didn't like the way he backpedaled on wiretapping and because he promised to escalate the war in Afghanistan. (Like everyone else who voted for Ralph Nader; I got loads of grief for it) But that doesn't mean I didn't want Obama to succeed. I did. The country is in too big a mess NOT to hope that he would succeed. But now...? Let's just forget about the fact that Obama never lifted a finger to stop Israel's two week rampage through Gaza which killed 1,100 unarmed civilians and destroyed much of the critical infrastructure. And let's give him a pass for equivocating on Iran, Georgia, missile defense in East Europe, Cuba, NAFTA, FISA, torture, war crimes, the Employee free Choice Act (EFCA) and any other issue that's important to liberals, progressives, leftists or anyone else who eats with a fork or walks on two legs. And let's excuse Obama for stepping up the air war in Afghanistan even though another 140 Afghan villagers were blown to bits 10 days ago while sitting in their schools, sleeping in their beds or having dinner with their families. (After all, Obama did say he was sorry, didn't he?) But now Obama is backing off on his promise to withdrawal troops from Iraq in 16 months. And, now he's planning to restore Bush's kangaroo courts (Military tribunals) for prisoners at Guantanamo who've never even been formally charged with a crime! And, now, he's threatening to hold some prisoners indefinitely in the U.S. without trial. (http://news.antiwar.com/2009/05/14/obama-mulls-indefinite-detention-without-trial-for-detainees/) I don't know about you, but I believe that America is based on the idea that every man has certain basic rights, and the most fundamental of all those rights is the right to know why the state has thrown your ass in jail. That's numero uno! It's called habeas corpus and the whole judicial system rests on that one foundation stone. People like Obama, who don't believe in habeas, shouldn't even call themselves "American" in my book because they don't believe in the underlying principles. Does Khalid Sheik Mohamed--the so-called "9-11 mastermind"-- deserve his day in court? You're damn right he does! That's how the system works. Deal with it. Obama is an unprincipled poseur; a snake charmer; a complete phony. No wonder the gushing David Brooks has been singing his praises lately. No wonder Andrew Sullivan calls him the "Neocon in Chief". Heck, even Cheney was talking-up Obama's bloody AfPak policy a few days ago. That says it all, doesn't it? Here's a blurp from Murdoch's Wall Street Journal, that sums up Obama perfectly: "Mr. Obama deserves credit for accepting that civilians courts are largely unsuited for the realities of the war on terror. He has now decided to preserve a tribunal process that will be identical in every material way to the one favored by Dick Cheney." Hypocrite? We'd be better off with McCain. At least with McCain you know what you're getting. more

Resolved Question: How do you feel about bands allowing their music to be used in commercials? Bad for integrity?

I know all of the arguments for it- it gives exposure to a band and it could possibly lead to more sales for the band. But I have such a problem with it. I guess I am an unapologetic purist. I write songs and I just couldn't imagine one of my songs being used for a diaper commercial or a financial firm or for Wal-Mart of a car commercial or anything like that. The song itself has its own meaning and that meaning has nothing to do with commercialism. To link the two together is somewhat degrading. It cheapens the song. As for classic rock songs and other classic songs in commercials, it is almost even worse. CCR's Fortunate Son song was used in a patriotic commercial for Wrangler and the song is actually a war protest song. Other 60's hits are being used in commercials for financial investing firms and many of those songs were protest songs also. They have little to do with materialism or capitalism. Born In The U.S.A. has been used even by the Reagan campaign and that song is a song that is critical of government. Do you see what I am getting at here? Do the advertising firms that put these songs in the commercials realize that these songs don't really fit? more

Resolved Question: Who is a better propaganda minister, David Axelrod or Joseph Goebbels?

Joseph Goebbels quotes: “The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”Joseph Goebbels "Yes we can yes we can, hope and change hope and change" “Intellectual activity is a danger to the building of character”Joseph Goebbels "Obama will pay for my car and my mortgage", " I love Obama" “Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”Joseph Goebbels "Today, the audacity of hope had its rendezvous with destiny....Obama is now an adopted son of Camelot. His candidacy blessed not just by the Lion of the Senate, patriarch of the clan, but by JFK’s daughter." — David Wright on ABC’s Nightline January 28. “When NBC News first assigned me to the Barack Obama campaign, I must confess my knees quaked a bit....I wondered if I was up to the job. I wondered if I could do the campaign justice.” — NBC reporter Lee Cowan in an article for NBC’s “The Peacock” advertising supplement, March 23-29. “I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often….And that is an objective assessment.” Chris Matthews MSNBC Hmmm too many similarities to list on here, I would say Axelrod is using Goebbels playbook to the letter, what say you? more

Resolved Question: case study............... help please?

A Giant Step for Mattress Giant Spending millions of dollars on advertising can have a positive impact on a company's bottom line, but companies often purchase advertising not realizing that the spending may benefit only the advertising firm, not their own revenues. Such was the case with Mattress Giant, one of America's largest bedding retailers, with 240 stores in 14 states. For years, the company spent more than $20 million annually about 10 percent of its revenue, advertising to people in their mid-30s, whose house-hold income was $30,000-40,000 per year, and who drove domestic cars. As it turns out, the company, headquartered in Addison, Texas, targeted the wrong audience. Market research was practically nonexistent. This audience was not determined by any rational analysis; it was based on the executives' gut feeling. When Steve Williams joined the company as its new chief information officer (CIO), he convinced the CEO to do things differently. Interestingly, some time before Williams was hired the company started to implement an information system that integrated point-of-sale (POS) and inventory/distribution systems. However, because salespeople complained that the system was too complicated to use, the implementation project was halted after the system had been installed only in 35 percent of the stores. Williams knew he had to change the CEO's mind and proceed with the system's implementation. To learn the business, Williams took a month away from his office. He visited Mattress Giant stores, listened to salespeople, watched the sales process, sold mattresses, and encouraged employees to speak out about the IT department. He traveled to distribution centers, observed the delivery process, and loaded delivery trucks. He also read e-mail from customers and learned about their experiences with the service. Listening to Williams' experience, the executive vice president of sales was convinced of the need for the POS system in all the stores. Next, Williams continued his educational crusade with the other executives. He convinced the chief financial officer (CFO) that what he proposed was not to spend money on information technology but on important business initiatives that involved information technology. He described how the company could save costs. He earned another ally. Williams kept reminding his fellow executives that the decisions they made could be solid only if they based them on information gleaned from the integrated information sys-tem. Cooperating with the loss prevention department, he used the IS to find branches that violated inventory security breaches. The company recovered thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise and manual errors, but only at the stores that were already linked to the system. And, that, exactly, was Williams' point. The executive vice president of sales, the CFO, and the CEO now supported his quest to complete the system's implementation throughout the chain. The implementation was completed. So, who were the predominant customers of Mattress Giant? With the data all the stores collected through their POSs, the IS generated a fact-based profile: predominantly female, about 43 years of age, with a household income of over $75,000 per year. As a result, the company completely changed its advertising strategy Now, it advertises on television shows that are watched by this demographic group, such as Friends, rather than on Monday Night Football. Focus groups and advertising campaigns target a well-defined population, one that is the most likely to purchase from the company. In the process, Williams also changed the image of his IT department from a technology dictator to a solution provider. It is fair to assume that the company's 5.7 percent revenue increase in 2002 was at least partly thanks to this chain-wide IS. 6 Thinking about the Case 1. In the context of data, process, and information, what data does the system collect which can serve marketing purposes? What is the information that marketing professionals can use? 2. How can the system be used to detect "inventory security breaches," a euphemism for stealing? 3. Assume you are the CIO of this company. Try to convince the CEO of three distinct business benefits of this IS. more

Resolved Question: IRB car stickers... hello?

You know those stickers European cars are supposed to have that indicate the home country of the car/driver? In my area (USA Florida), I keep seeing them on the backs of cars, but they say 'IRB.' I was a little blown away. It turns out, the locals who have these stickers live in Indian Rocks Beach! Whose bright idea was this? Every time I see one of these cars, I can only think "Irish Republican Brotherhood.' Did anybody think this out when they started their little area promotional campaign? Who could miss this? You're trying to start a little publicity/unity campaign among area suburbanites, and you choose initials like IRB? Resolved Question: funny slogan translations?

When companies try to sell their products in foreign countries, sometimes their advertising message gets lost in the translation. For example: -PepsiCo ran an ad campaign in Germany featuring the slogan "the come-alive generation". But in the German translation, the slogan means "the arise-from-the-grave generation". German consumers wondered if Pepsi was some kind of zombie drink. -Coca-Cola Co. had to change its name in China in 1986 after it discovered that, when spoken in Chinese, its name meant "bite the wax tadpole" -General Motors Corp. couldn't understand why sales of it's economy car, the Nova, were so bad in Latin America. Finally, GM wised up and realized that in Spanish, "No va" means "no go". i thought these were really funny. does anyone else know of any other slogans that make an odd translation? more

Resolved Question: Wouldn't the perfect solution to fixing our economic crisis be.........?

Wouldn't the perfect solution to fixing our economic crisis be.........? To distribute 1 million dollars to each legal us citizen, pay the taxes back on it, and reinvest 15% of that to each persons dependent (ie kids, etc). We would be able to do whatever with the remaining balance and still have plenty left over. We could payoff debts, homes, cars, businesses, etc, while still allowing people to work for a decent wage but I think the people can stimulate the economy better then the government. Is there something in the hormonal discharges of a woman's reproductive organs that is preventing people from getting an electric car? Or are they just respondents to advertising campaigns that have long linked sexuality to muscle cars in order to sell them? Statement that "most" women are attracted to cars based on q&a from the following: When i asked, "would you be more likely to date a guy with an electric car or a muscle car" women responded that they thought it was important he be the muscle car owner, or owner of "a" car. Resolved Question: Read this!! Want to be taxed for each mile you drive?

The following is an article from newsobserver.com. If you don't want to read the whole thing, it basically says that they are playing with the idea of taxing everyone for each mile they drive because more and more people will be turning to fuel efficient cars and not buying as much gas and they will be loosing the gas tax money. What do you think of this? ================================== Bruce Siceloff, Staff Writer Comment on this story Two hundred Triangle drivers will be recruited this fall to road-test a satellite-technology system that might be used one day to collect highway taxes on every mile we drive -- replacing the gas tax on every gallon we buy. Computers mounted in volunteers' cars will use global positioning system tracking to count the miles -- even across state lines. Participants will receive make-believe state and federal tax bills for their miles. For their time and their opinions, they'll be paid $895 in real money. The $16.5 million Road User Charge Study will enlist drivers in six states to determine whether the technology works, and whether Americans would accept a new mileage tax. Volunteers will be asked how they feel about technology that collects information about their driving. The federal government and 15 states, including North Carolina, are paying for the study to find a fair, reliable revenue source that can keep pace with growing transportation needs. "The gas tax is not going to be a viable way of funding our highways in the future," Jon Kuhl, a University of Iowa professor who is directing the study, said in an interview. "The national Highway Trust Fund is already going broke, and the situation is going to get worse." Gas tax collections are slowing as cars get more miles on each gallon, and as $4 pump prices force Americans to reduce their driving. A few years from now, many Americans might be driving plug-in electric and fuel-cell cars that don't use gas at all. Michael Walden, an economist at N.C. State University, said the study will help Americans answer hard questions about how to pay for the nation's transportation infrastructure. He agreed with Kuhl that the nation needs to find a replacement for the gas tax. "Perhaps a better way in terms of assessing someone's use of the roads is not how many gallons they use but how many miles they actually drive," said Walden, who is not involved in the study. "A mileage tax could be adjusted over time, as the cost of road construction goes up." With the $895 bounty and an advertising campaign that will start next week, Kuhl and his team hope to enlist a diverse mix of car owners from the six-county Triangle area. Details are available by phone at 866-363-1975 (toll-free) or online at www.roaduserstudy.org. After the participants are chosen and trained, their cars will be outfitted with GPS computers -- the satellite technology that drives popular dashboard navigation gadgets. Over eight months, starting in December, the car's computer will record the number of miles driven in each state, then upload the information to a central billing system. Make-believe taxes Cars will have make-believe per-mile tax rates based on their EPA-estimated fuel economy. The tax rates are intended to generate about the same taxes on miles that the car pays in taxes on gallons of gas. The mileage tax would be higher for a heavy truck that burns a lot of gas, and lower for a fuel-thrifty hybrid. A typical car rated at 24 miles per gallon will have a make-believe federal tax rate of 0.8 cents per mile, plus 1.3 cents per mile for the North Carolina tax, Kuhl said. For 24 miles, that's 31.2 cents state and 19.2 cents federal tax -- about a penny more than the current taxes on a gallon. If the technology works, it could give federal, state and even local governments the option to set different tax rates for different vehicles. Volunteers also will test of public attitudes about a new type of tax -- and about technology that gathers information about where people drive. "Privacy is a hot-button issue," Kuhl said. "People rightly have a knee-jerk reaction about being tracked." The system will only count the number of miles driven each month in a given state, he said. "There's no way these units could be used to track people or determine they were in a particular place at a particular time," Kuhl said. Some drivers will worry about government snooping, Walden said, and that could make it even harder to sell the idea of a new tax. "I don't know if the mileage tax is going to be any better accepted than the gas tax, but I know we have a problem finding money for our roads," Walden said. bruce.siceloff@newsobserver.com or 919-829-4527 http://www.newsobserver.com/news/growth/traffic/story/1245637.html more

Resolved Question: could any English speaker help me to correct the grammar of my CV? thank you very much.?

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: After accumulating three years experiences on sales representative, I tend to change my career to marketing. This is because that marketing practices not only a simple sale activity but including multiple operations with advertising campaigns, the routes of display and surveys etc. It will be more challenging and interesting. I am willing to face and learn it. Since my wife and I finished master degree dissertations in England last month, we came back to Taiwan for job hunting. My dissertation named “Consumer’s attitude toward greener cars – a study of green marketing application”. The reason of choicing this topic is that I believe green issue should be considered to each business activity, although it is a heavy pollution industry. I read many articles about this issue and found some limitations of executing green marketing. The solutions could be that: communicating with customers through media or cooperating with government and NGOs to educate customers or ally with business partners/rivals to increase customer’s green consciousness etc. My dissertation is being examined now. I am likely to get the certification of master degree in January 2009. My short plan is to learn marketing practices in foreign company in three years. Then, I will do my best to with the balance between work responsibility and family life. The long term goal is to be a capable person who can shoulder more responsibilities in the company which I serve in. In the same time, I will try to commit the societal responsibilities in this stage of life. Serving for a firm which has same value not only can increase stability of work but also decline the friction of execution inside the company. As a result, a global company likes Johnson is an ideal one which can enjoy the work and making progress. Thus, I am willing to face any challenge at work and create more growth to company with colleagues if I have an opportunity to serve to you.  more

Resolved Question: Help with my alpha romeo advertising project?

our theme for the campaign is romeo and juliet...and ive been drawing some examples of print ads. right now i have one of a man jumping over a stone wall in order to get to the car behind it and underneath it says "for stony limits cannot hold love out" and the other shows a man near her window and the alfa romeo is parked in the driveway and the headlights are shining through the window. this one says "what light through yonder window breaks?" anyways im trying to keep the same format for all the ads, but now im trying to think of one for the quote "tempt not a desperate man" where i wanna have maybe a scratch on the car, and the guy going insane, but what can the man be doing exactly that would fit the quote. The other is "has my heart loved til now?" or "for i never saw true beauty until this night" what can i use for one of those? if you guys can think of any others let me know! thanks  more

Resolved Question: does this make sense? feel free to add things!?

I think some affordable solutions for transportation on college campuses can be a college that has its own individual shuttle bus. So it would be not only less cars in congested parking lots. But it would save less time. Another solution can be a promotional campaign showing the benefits of walking or using public transportation. A campaign that can be put all around campus advertised with the words stating “the body is great for walking” I believe letting people know about the benefits of walking can give them an insight on how important exercise is. An as far as public transportation students can put on an advertisement can say “you want to save gas, take the shuttle train” it would be a lot cheaper purchasing it at your school than the local shuttle train station. Because then you can get a school discount. However, the simplest solution is to charge a higher price for permits and parking, which would force the students into alternative forms of transport. Or charge one for the initial parking then continuously charge it for every exceeding hour (or half hour). more

Voting Question: How did it get past the advertising agency's drawing board?

It is near impossible, in my opinion, for anyone to show me a less intelligent, more desperate-sounding ad campaign than the current Hyundai 'Duh' promo. If I knew nothing about anything having to do with Hyundai, this campaign would only keep me from investigating their vehicles. It makes me question how much they really want to cause really wants to sell cars. And I'm talking in the history of advertising. It seems I just wasn't paying attention. It would be nice to be able to edit one's own document to fix typos like this. What I meant was: It makes me question how much they really want to sell cars. I'll add that this campaign likely puts a huge burden on the shoulders of Hyundai dealership salesmen all over the country. more
