Open Question: Implied population statistics question Help!?
The archaeological site of Tara is more than 4,000 years old. Tradition states that Tara was the seat of the high kings of Ireland. Because of its archaeological importance, Tara has received extensive study. Suppose an archaeologist wants to estimate the density of ferromagnetic artifacts in the Tara region. For this purpose, a random sample of 55 plots, each of size 100 square meters, is used. The number of ferromagnetic artifacts for each plot is determined Identify the implied population: A) Number of ferromagnetic artifacts per 100 square meters B) Number of ferromagnetic artifacts in some of the plots C) Number of ferromagnetic artifacts per each distinct 100 sq m plot in the Tara region D) Number of ferromagnetic artifacts per 100 sq m in some plots in the Tara region E) None of these moreOpen Question: What are my chances at getting accepted at cmu?

of Labor Statistics reports that women still earn only 80 cents for every dollar men make. The implication is clear. Women, it is assumed, are victims of a chauvinistic work world that undervalues their contributions. But is that assumption correct? No…women have mostly themselves - and their career choices - to blame for their plight because women are less likely than men to put money first when making career decisions. Instead, women sacrifice fat paychecks in exchange for work that is flexible, less risky and more fulfilling. The fact is, when hours worked, areas of responsibility, and amount of uninterrupted experience are factored in men routinely earn less than women. Do you agree that women need to reject their feelings of discrimination and take matters into their own hands by making better career decisions? For example: Concentrate on career options in the hard sciences, not the social sciences. Engineers and computer scientists get paid more than teachers, journalists, and social workers. Female engineering managers earn an average annual salary of $83,000, but only 10 percent of professionals in the field are women. Get hazard pay without the hazards. Women in the military have an 8-to-1 safety ratio over men (i.e., not a single woman in the Marines or Air Force has died in the War in Iraq). Women cab drivers routinely work safer shifts (and sometimes areas) than their male counterparts, as well as get higher tips, in spite of not necessarily helping with the baggage. For women willing to think big, there's the lucrative option of starting up a company in a male-dominated industry such as construction. Thanks to laws governing federal contracts and woman-owned businesses, they'll have government agencies, universities, and other organizations competing for their services. Choose fields with higher financial and emotional risks. Male doctors and lawyers earn more than females in part because they are more likely to be in private practice. Risk is a huge reason venture capitalists earn between $100,000 and $300,000 a year - substantially more than supermarket cashiers who receive a regular paycheck and "check out" at the end of the day. About 91 percent of venture capitalists are men. Put in the hours. People who work just ten hours more per week earn almost twice the pay. Know the fields that pay women more than men. Female statisticians, for example, earn one third more than men, while female speech-language pathologists make 29 percent more. Farrell lists 39 fields that pay women at least 5 percent more than men. Be willing to move - and to travel. Women account for half of today's professionals, but only 18 percent of all employees transferred abroad, and only a similar percentage of frequent fliers. Women who move up are willing to both travel on the job and to relocate, especially overseas. Consider a higher-paying specialty. A nurse, for example, who wishes to become a nurse anesthetist can make twice the pay of a general nurse. A nurse with a bit of wanderlust can earn much better income as a traveling nurse. Do agree that many women will prefer to embrace the victim mentality - and continue to seek the wrong remedies instead of admitting the problem is in themselves? 1.Some investors feel that since AT&T is such a large utility, its earning per share (EPS) should be related to GNP (gross national product), using the latter as a predictor of the former. From the data in the accompanying table, perform the following operations: a.Estimate the least-square line; the standard error of each of the regression coefficients; the actual t-values; the coefficient of determination; the standard error of estimate; and the actual F value. b.Interpret all the information conveyed by the regression statistics above. c.Construct a 99% confidence interval estimate for the true regression slope and interpret your findings. d.Construct a 95% confidence level estimate of (EPS) when GNP=800. To test this theory, the nominal rate of interest on three-month treasury bills (RTRS) was regressed against the rate of change in the implicit price deflator (INF) using annual data for the period 1948 to 1983. The result of the regression is: ^ RTRS = 1.658 (0.793) + 0.785 (0.161) INF where figures in parentheses are the corresponding, estimated standard errors. Use these results to test the following hypothesis: a.The nominal rate of interest increases as the rate of inflation increases. b.The nominal rate of interest increases by 1 percent for each 1 percent increase in the rate of inflation. c.The real rate of interest (i.e., the nominal rate of interest when INF = O) is positive. Here you go... I know people who would be great at webcam modeling, can I make money referring them to you? Yes, you can get paid for referrals by becoming an agent. Our Webcam Model Affiliate Program pays agents a 10% commission of each referred model's weekly earnings. How much do webcam models make, and what can I make as their agent? Our average webcam model will make between $500 and $1,000 per week working 20 to 25 hours, with some models making much more. Based on that average, our agents make $50 to $100 per week for each active model. Recruit 10 active models, and you could make $500 to $1,000 or more each week. If you recruit 50 working models, you could earn $100,000 or more per year. As an agent, would I get paid for referring other agents to you? Yes. We have a 2 tier affiliate program, so you get a 10% commission from the earnings of each agent you refer. Can I be both model and agent at the same time? Yes. We actually encourage models to become agents too so they can make even more money by recruiting their friends. The only restriction is that a model cannot get paid as an agent for recruiting herself. Do you accept agents and models from outside the U.S.? Yes. We accept both agents and models from any country, but all models we hire must be able to speak English. To start as an agent, how many models do I have to have with you? None. You can start with no models. Of course you will not be paid until you recruit your first one, and she or he starts making money. Is there a minimum number of models I need to maintain in order to continue as an agent with you? No. You can have as few or many models as you want, you will still be paid the same for each model. Do I need to have my own website in order to become an agent? No. Although having a website does help, it is not required. Agents can advertise our website directly using their agent affiliate link. How do I make sure I get credit for all my referrals? Each agent is provided with their own affiliate link to our website. Someone only needs to click on your affiliate link once, and they will always be associated with your agent code, no matter when they apply, even if it's a year later. How will I know when someone signs up using my code, and how much commission I have earned? Every time someone applies using your agent code, our system sends you an email notification. You can then track that application as well as your earnings through our Agent Portal. Do you provide traffic stats so I can see where my referrals came from? Yes. Detailed traffic statistics are available through our Agent Portal. Traffic data includes daily unique visitors, complete referrer data, signups by referrer, and model data by referrer. ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/foru...p?p=105020 I have never recruited models before, where would I start? Ads on Craigslist and Backpage are a good start since they are usually free or very inexpensive. Another effective way is through friends, networking, and placing ads in local newspapers. Tradeshows and special events have worked great as well. Can I refer male models too or do you only pay agents for female models? Since we accept both female and male models, agents are paid the same for both. Do I need to provide support for my models or contact them to get paid? No. All you need to do is refer the models to us, we take care of everything else. As long as models you referred keep working and making money, you get a 10% share of their earnings. I have my own webcam site. Can I still be an agent for you, so my models have a chance to make more money? Yes. We do not require agents to be exclusive to us, so you are free to promote and recruit for other sites as well. How often do agents get paid, and what payment options do you offer? Agents get paid weekly, each Monday, for the previous work week, and we can pay by either PayPal, Epassporte, direct deposit, or check (for U.S. residents only). We do not hold back pay nor deduct for chargebacks. Is there a minimum amount I need to make before you pay me? No, we do not have a minimum payout, so if you make 1 cent in a week, we will pay it to you during that pay period. Are there banners I can use to promote your agency on my site or in ads? Yes, you can find our approved promotional banners for agents by clicking here. But for the last year that I saw statistics there were 17,000 murders in the U.S. which works out to about 46 per day. Surely in the whole world there must have been over 100,000 murders per year which works out to over 274 murders per day. Would it be accurate to say that the media only focuses great attention to a murder when it involves a pretty, middle class white girl or young woman? LLOYD: In yesterday's show we talked about a tourist attraction in Mexico that aims to turn immigration into entertainment -- where people pay admission to find out what it might take to cross the border. Today, Soledad O'Brien takes you inside a live-action game, with a loaded message. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN REPORTER: Gun fire rings out. U.S. border patrol agents discover illegal migrants near the Mexican border. The action is captured on our night scope camera. But it's all fake. In reality, you are hundreds of miles from the border in central Mexico. The real border patrol says they don't fire on illegal migrants. This is a tourist adventure run by the Nanu indigenous people. They say the goal is to keep their people from crossing the border. Their tribe has been decimated, ninety per cent of the Nanu has migrated to the United States. PONCHO, TOUR GUIDE (Translated): This is not training, it's a method of awareness. O'BRIEN: Human rights groups say it's shocking and insulting. But, it's a full house tonight-more than fifty people are in our group...and many are 7-year-olds in Scout troops. We hide in the bushes, cling to rocks to cross the river. We slog through deep mud. We make our way through a tunnel. Our guides urge us to hurry. It's after midnight as we approach the fictional border. We've paid 20 bucks a piece for this tourist adventure, and Poncho estimates more than 5000 people, a mix of Mexicans and others, have done it. O'BRIEN: Pilar Saucedo is a Mexican, working in Mexico City for an American pharmaceutical company. PILAR SAUCEDO: It's not making fun or anything like that...It's not a sorta training to really cross the border, its to understand that it's difficult. O'BRIEN: One o'clock in the morning, and we've made it to the fictional border. Poncho says we're in for a surprise. In the distance, we see-hundreds of little fires, a surprising end to our grueling four hours. Soledad O'Brien, CNN. I'm starting 9th grade this fall, but I've had the same plan since the 3rd grade on how I want to spend my life. I want to major in psychology and minor in dance (some of the schools I want to go to don't have majors or minors in dance so that will depend on which ones I get into,) and then become a psychiatrist. The top colleges I want to go to; Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, UCLA and U Miami. Also UT Austin and NYU are my second choices. What are some things I should do? This is my plan so far, tell me some things I should adjust: ACADEMICS: This year I had straight A's (one A-, three A's and one A+ per quarter usually.) I plan to do the same next year. I go to an all girls boarding school, and I plan on taking honors English 9-11 grade and AP English 12th grade. I plan to take AP Chem, AP Psychics and AP Bio sometime in high school and a psychology class as well (which counts as science credit.) If I can convince my principal I can handle AP Bio (an 11-12 grade course) next year. For math, I plan to take Algebra II next year, then either honors geometry or trig (which one should I chose?) and then AP Statistics and AP Calculus. For social studies, I plan to take honors world history in 9th grade and AP US History in 10th grade (not sure yet for 11th and 12th.) I've been taking Spanish since 6th grade and am neatly fluent and was going to take Spanish III for 9th grade and French 10-12 grade, but I heard it looks bad to take more than one language for high school so should I continue learning Spanish using Rosetta Stone and then take French in 9-12 grade or should I take Spanish III in 9th grade and French 10-12 grade? AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: *I horseback ride *I dance (Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Modern, Pointe) *I play violin and piano *I am a member of my schools orchestra *I'm in a community service / giving back club *I draw *I've written 10 novels and plan to publish them soon (I read on a college app "past jobs you've had." I don't think I'll be working anytime in high school. I go to a boarding school, as I said, so I can't work an after school job and over the summer I go to dance camp for 6 weeks and then the 4 weeks that I'm not at camp I'm on vacation with my family. Will it look bad on an application if I don't write down any jobs?) Any advice and answers to my questions would be amazing! (Hint: Restate this event in terms of x.) moreVoting Question: Which schools should I consider transferring to?
So I have been posting many transfer questions, and I think I will make this my last "transfer-related" question. I am currently a mathematics major attending SUNY Geneseo going to my sophomore year this upcoming fall. The main reasons why I chose this school is to save money and take advantage of the great liberal arts education the school has to offer. Now that most of my general education requirements are being fulfilled, I plan on transferring to a school with a strong math program and a strong statistics program. Looking at many options, I couldn't really decide whether the school is academically, personally, and socially fit for me. I am a very hard worker, but I also like to have some fun inside and outside of campus. Although this doesn't strikes problematic for me, I would prefer schools closer to home (I am a NY resident) and prefer schools in nonurban areas. My awful current Geneseo's cumulative GPA is a 3.3 and I plan on raising that to at least a 3.5 next semester (I will be focusing solely on academics this upcoming semester). Although this GPA doesn't seem striking, I have received A's in all of my math classes so far. I plan on transferring during the fall semester of my junior year. Throughout high school, I am the valedictorian of my graduating class with a 95.8 unweighted average. I took many AP classes in high school, and participated in many math contests, played Varsity Tennis, and participated in many selective choruses ranging from Bass II to Tenor I. However my SAT score of 1270 (490CR, 780M) is abysmal. I am an Asian though, which could help me in some ways (or possibly hurt me). I scored 770 on the Math Level I and a 790 on the Math Level II on the SAT Subject Tests. There are a bunch of extracurricular activities to mention, but I am lazy to do that now. In college, I have participated in a few math contests including the Putnam Examination (which I didn't do well my freshman year), and the University of Rochester exam (getting honorable mention surprisingly!) I also devote 5 hours per week to tutoring in the Math Learning Center. I am also in a selective chorus called the Chamber Singers last year. I plan on doing research, take the US Sudoku Qualifying Test, scoring well on math competitions, raise my GPA, and devote some time to the Math Learning Center all before I apply to schools I should consider. Being stereotypical, my parents wants me to consider transferring to Cornell. Aware that the acceptance rate to the School of Arts and Sciences is as low as 15%, my statistics, especially my current GPA and my SAT scores is discouraging me. However, I feel that it academically meets all of my needs, and that Cornell is a school I should consider applying to. If anything, I will apply to the School of Engineering and major in Operations Research, a unique program that many schools don't have to offer. Other schools that I plan on transferring to are UNC, UMichigan, and NYU. Feel free to chance me at these schools. My question: What schools should I consider transferring to? I am always open for suggestions. Thank you! moreResolved Question: Will the Madden curse affect Drew Brees?
Madden Curse Prior to 1999, every annual installment of the Madden NFL series primarily featured John Madden on its cover.[24] In 1999, Electronic Arts selected Garrison Hearst to appear on the PAL version's cover, and has since featured one of the league’s top players on every annual installment.[25] Since then, much like the Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx, certain players who appeared on Madden video game box art have experienced a decline in performance, usually due to an injury. * Daunte Culpepper led the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs in 2000, but after appearing on the Madden 2002 cover, he threw 23 interceptions as the Vikings slumped to a 5-11 record. He also broke the record for most fumbles in a single season. While his career looked to be back on track in 2004 with a career season, he blew out both knees in 2005 and 2006 and never resembled the player he was at the start of the decade. * Marshall Faulk appeared on the 2003 cover, and his career (and the success of the St. Louis Rams) severely declined afterwards. He did not register another 1,000 yard rushing season and his yards per carry average dropped from a consistent 5.4 over the previous three years to 4.5 in 2002 and 4.0 in 2003 and 2004. He started 21 out of a possible 32 games from 2002-2003 as knee injuries got the better of him. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery in 2005 and retired that same year. * After appearing on the cover of Madden NFL 2004, Michael Vick broke his leg in pre-season and missed the first 12 games, with the Atlanta Falcons going 5-11. * Ray Lewis, 2005 cover athlete and middle linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, had his season cut short in week 15 with a wrist injury. It was also Lewis' first season without an interception. * In 2006, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his right knee while jumping out of bounds in a game versus the Tennessee Titans, ending his season. McNabb also suffered a sports hernia in the first game of the season. * Running back Shaun Alexander, then the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player, was featured on the cover of Madden NFL 2007, and sustained a foot injury that caused him to miss six starts.[26] As a result, Alexander’s rushing statistics were substantially less than those from the previous season, and he never returned to true form.[26] Alexander himself has asked, “Do you want to be hurt and on the cover, or just hurt?"[27] * Madden NFL 2008's cover featured Vince Young, the starting quarterback of the Tennessee Titans. Young missed one game of the 2007 season due to a minor injury, but for the rest of the season was roughly even with his 2006 performance. When Young appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to officially announce that he would appear on the cover of Madden NFL 2008, he derided allegations of becoming the curse’s next victim, and stated, “I've done prayed about it and we're gonna go home and try to get to the playoffs and try to get to the Super Bowl. We'll see what happens."[28][29] * Brett Favre appeared on the cover of Madden NFL 2009 as a Green Bay Packer, under the impression that Favre was retired. However, shortly after the decision, Favre came back out of retirement and signed with the New York Jets, forcing EA to release a new cover online. Though he did not miss any games, later admitted to suffering a torn biceps injury, which Favre says may have affected his gameplay during the final five games of his first and only season with the New York Jets, who missed the playoffs at 9-7 after starting the season 8-3.[30] Favre threw 2 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in the last 5 games of the season. * On September 10, 2009, Strong Safety Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who was featured along with Larry Fitzgerald, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, on the cover of Madden NFL 10, sprained his MCL in the first half of the season opener and missed the next four games. After returning, Polamalu played in three more games before injuring his posterior cruciate ligament on November 14, 2009 against Cincinnati, and missed more games as a result. Larry Fitzgerald, on the other hand, started all 16 regular season and both playoff games for the Cardinals. He did not attend the pro bowl due to a rib injury, leaving Steve Smith of the New York Giants, to take his spot in the 2010 Pro Bowl. He recorded 97 receptions (third-most of his NFL career), 1,092 yards (fourth-most), and a career-high 13 touchdowns. They keep telling us that the "violence has spilled over from Mexico", "Border cities are the most dangerous cities in America ", and that "Phoenix is the number one city for kidnappings because of illegal immigration" etc... BUT! their claims do not add up with the Bureau of Justice Statistics and FBI reports. Where do they get their information from? ========================== According to BJS, crime rates in border states have dropped during past decade Crime rates in Arizona at lowest point in decades. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the violent crime rate in Arizona was lower in 2006, 2007, and 2008 -- the most recent year from which data are available -- than any year since 1983. The property crime rate in Arizona was lower in 2006, 2007, and 2008 than any year since 1968. In addition, in Arizona, the violent crime rate dropped from 577.9 per 100,000 population in 1998 to 447 per 100,000 population in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 5,997 to 4,291 during the same period. During the same decade, Arizona's undocumented immigrant population grew rapidly. The Arizona Republic reported: "Between January 2000 and January 2008, Arizona's undocumented population grew 70 percent, according to the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] report. Nationally, it grew 37 percent." Crime rates have dropped during past decade in other border states. The BJS data further show that violent crime rates and property crime rates in California, New Mexico, and Texas dropped from 1998 through 2008 -- the most recent year from which data are available: •In California, the violent crime rate dropped from 703.7 in 1998 to 503.8 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 3,639.1 to 2,940.3 during the same period. •In New Mexico, the violent crime rate dropped from 961.4 in 1998 to 649.9 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 5,757.7 to 3,909.2 over the same period. •In Texas, the violent crime rate dropped from 564.6 in 1998 to 507.9 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 4,547 to 3,985.6 over the same period. http://mediamatters.org/research/201004290029 moreResolved Question: please help with this statistics question?
previous exercise describes a class survey in which students claimed to study an average of xbar (mean of x) = 137 minutes on a typical weeknight. [PREVIOUS EXERCISE: A class survey in a large class for first year college students asked "About how many minutes do you study on a typical weeknight?" The mean response of the 269 students was xbar (mean of x) = 137 minutes. Suppose that we know that the study times follows a Normal distribution with standard deviation = 65 minutes in the population of all first year students] Regard these students as an SRS from the population of all first year students at this university. Does the study give good evidence that students claim to study more than 2 hours per night on the average? (a) State the null and alternative hypotheses in terms of the mean study time in minutes for the population. (b) What is the value of the test statistic z? (c) What is the P-value of the test? I am going to be straight up honest, because I think I will get the best educational answer! First of all, I am an obese 23 year old female. I have been fat my whole life. Secondly, I despise cardio with a passion. Third, I discovered that I love weight lifting! On one end, I keep hearing horror stories that lifting weights isn't going to do a THING for me if I don't first do cardio to melt most of the fat. On the other end though, I hear that weight lifting is key; the best overall option, and the fastest yet healthiest way to drop pounds. What are your opinions and experiences with this? Also, if weight lifting now is a good choice in my current obese state, how long should I do it per day, and how soon do you think I will see some sort of a result? I don't plan on giving up if I don't see significant weight loss; I just want to hear any opinions or statistics to enlighten my thought process. NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS)--At 25, pushing her 22-month-old son Diego through Brooklyn's sweltering summer streets, Maricela Estrada says she is not planning on any more children. Along with Diego, peeking out from the stroller, the soft-spoken woman, who became a mother at 20, has two other children, ages 4 and 5, at home with her husband of seven years. "For me, it's not bad to have children as a young person," Estrada said in Spanish near her Brooklyn home. Estrada's story is part of the eye-catching fertility statistics among Hispanic American women, who, on average, begin families earlier, have fewer abortions and, in their younger years, produce almost twice as many babies as other groups: 82 births per 1,000 among females aged 15 to 19, compared with the national average of 42 per 1,000. National teen pregnancy rates have declined about 35 percent since 1991, but the rate for Hispanic teens is dropping at half that pace, according to a March report by the Washington-based National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, which has a goal of reducing teen pregnancy by one-third between 2006 and 2015. In the medley of explanations for the sluggish decline, the lack of education about sex and birth control--both in schools and in families--deserves special attention, said Rosie Molinary, author of the 2007 "Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image and Growing Up Latina," which she wrote after surveying 500 Latina women on issues including sexuality. 'Conversations Don't Happen' "Those conversations don't happen," Molinary says. "These girls are in a vulnerable situation." The National Campaign launched a Latino initiative in March that highlights a startling figure: 51 percent of Latina women are pregnant at least once by age 20. The program includes partners such as the New York-based Latina magazine and the Washington-based National Council of La Raza. Bill Albert, deputy director of the National Campaign, said the first step of the Latino initiative was the release of research findings and beginning to work with partners such as La Raza--which works with Hispanic families--to ensure they include teen pregnancy prevention in existing programs. "It is very clear from Latina teens that they really want to hear from their parents on these issues, but parents don't necessarily believe that," Albert said. http://www.womensenews.org/story/reproductive-health/070821/latina-teen-pregnancies-spur-push-family-talks moreResolved Question: Hasn't it been proven that commonsense Liberals have the solutions to our problems?

MEXICO CITY – It's one of the safest parts of America, and it's getting safer. It's the U.S.-Mexico border, and even as politicians say more federal troops are needed to fight rising violence, government data obtained by The Associated Press show it actually isn't so dangerous after all. The top four big cities in America with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, according to a new FBI report. And an in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows that Border Patrol agents face far less danger than street cops in most U.S. cities. The Customs and Border Protection study, obtained with a Freedom of Information Act request, shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, mostly when assailants threw rocks at them. That compares with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives. In addition, violent attacks against agents declined in 2009 along most of the border for the first time in seven years. So far this year assaults are slightly up, but data is incomplete. "The border is safer now than it's ever been," said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling. He said one factor is that with fewer jobs available amid the U.S. recession, illegal immigration has dropped. And responding to security concerns after 9-11, the Border Patrol has doubled the number of agents in the region since 2004. Nonetheless, border lawmakers and governors say their region is under siege and needs more troops. "Violence in the vicinity of the U.S.-Mexico border continues to increase at an alarming rate. We believe that this violence represents a serious threat to the national security of the United States as well as a serious threat to U.S. citizens that live along the 1,969-mile long border," a dozen bipartisan members of Congress from border states wrote President Obama. In Arizona, a stringent new immigration law takes effect next month, requiring police to question suspects' immigration status if officers believe they're in the country illegally. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said in a televised interview last weekend: "We are out here on the battlefield getting the impact of all this illegal immigration, and all the crime that comes with it." In response to the concerns from the border states, Obama pledged to send 1,200 National Guard troops to help and spend an extra $500 million on border security. His one-time rival for the presidency, Arizona Sen. John McCain, said he should send at least 6,000 troops, which are needed because he said Arizona leads the nation in marijuana seizures, suffered 368 kidnappings in 2008 and has the highest property crime rates in the U.S. But FBI crime reports for 2009 says violent crime in Arizona declined. And violent crimes in southwest border counties are among the lowest in the nation per capita — they've dropped by more than 30 percent in the last two decades. Of America's 25 largest cities, San Diego — with one out of four residents an immigrant — has the lowest number of violent crimes per capita. Opponents of increased border security are frustrated by descriptions of a wave of violence when the statistics show the region to be relatively safe. "Politicians are hyping up this incredible fear across the country about the border, but these numbers show these are lies being perpetrated on the American public," said immigrant advocate Isabel Garcia at Tucson-based Derechos Humanos. "The warnings about violence are just an excuse to crack down on migrants who want to work and be with their families." Even residents of the border region who want more security are surprised by the talk of violence. "I have to say, a lot of this is way overblown," said Gary Brasher of Tuboc, Arizona, who is president of the Coalition for a Safe and Secure Border. Bob has received lots of compliments from his friends and neighbors, and several have encouraged him to start his own candy making business. After several days of research, Bob finds that the national average amount of money spent annually per person on this type of specialty candy is $75. Bob believes that the citizens in his area spend more than that per year. Knowing whether or not this is true could help Bob make a wise decision regarding his future business plans. Bob wants to use statistics to support his claim, and to help him obtain a small business loan. Bob also wants to find an estimate of the true amount of money local citizens do spend on this type of specialty candy. The prosecutor in the OJ Simpson trial claimed that spousal abuse is a prelude to murder. The defense lawyer said that's not true, because fewer than one in 2,500 men who abuse their spouse go on to kill them later. Now, imagine a sample of 200,000 battered women (not all women, just those subject to abuse). Granting the defense claim of 1 in 2,500, we expect about 80 of these women to be murdered by their abusers in a given year (since 200,000 divided by 2,500 equals 80). We can estimate that an additional 10 of these battered women, on average, will be killed by someone else, because the murder rate for all women in the United States at the time of the trial was about 1 in 20,000 per year. ...the nurding home fire, the river in flood pouring over the sandbag levee, the airplane crash with fragments of burnt bodies scattered among the hunks of twisted metal, the grenade in the marketplace, the sinking ship. But how to grasp a thing that does not kill you today or tomorrow but slowly from the inside in twenty years. How to feel that a corporate or governmental choice means we bear twisted genes and our grandchildren will be stillborn if our children are very lucky. Slow death can not be photographed for the six oclock news. Its all statistical, the gross national product or the prime lending rate. Yet if our eyes saw in the right spectrum, how it would shine, lurid as magenta neon. If we could smell radiation like seeping gas, if we could sense it as heat, if we could hear it as a low ominous roar of the earth shifting, then we would not sit and be poisoned while industry spokesmen talk of acceptable millirems and ~O2 cancer per population thousand. We acquiesce at murder so long as it is slow, murder from asbestos dust, from tobacco, from lead in the water, from sulphur in the air, and fourteen years later statistics are printed on the rise in leukemia among children. We never see their faces. They never stand, those poisoned children together in a courtyard, and are gunned down by men in three-piece suits. The shipyard workers who built nuclear submarines, the soldiers who were marched into the Nevada desert to be tested by the H- bomb, the people who work in power plants, they die quietly years after in hospital wards- and not on the evening news. The soft spring rain floats down and the air is perfumed with pine and earth. Seedlings drink it in, robins sip it in puddles, you run in it and feel clean and strong, the spring rain blowing from the irradiated cloud Over the power plant. Radiation is oppression, the daily average kind, the kind youre almost used to and live with as the years abrade you, high blood pressure, ulcers, cramps, migraine, a hacking cough you take it inside and it becomes pain and you say, not They are killing me but I am sick now. Most people seem to think that the reason the wage gap doesn't exist is because women work more part-time. "However, most gender wage comparisons leave out part-time workers and focus only on full-time, year-round workers. A close look at the earnings of women and men who work 40 hours or more per week reveals that the wage gap may actually widen as the number of hours worked increases. Women working 41 to 44 hours per week earn 84.6% of what men working similar hours earn; women working more than 60 hours per week earn only 78.3% of what men in the same time category earn (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). A far-ranging study of homosexual men published in 1978 revealed that 75 percent of self-identified, white, gay men admitted to having sex with more than 100 different males in their lifetime: 15 percent claimed 100-249 sex partners; 17 percent claimed 250- 499; 15 percent claimed 500-999; and 28 percent claimed more than 1,000 lifetime male sex partners. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has reported an upswing in promiscuity, at least among young homosexual men in San Francisco. From 1994 to 1997, the percentage of homosexual men reporting multiple partners and unprotected anal sex rose from 23.6 percent to 33.3 percent, with the largest increase among men under 25. Despite its continuing incurability, AIDS no longer seems to deter individuals from engaging in promiscuous gay sex. A 2003 U. S.- based, Urban Men’s Health Study, reported that over 30% of the homosexual men studied frequented bathhouses with an average of 27 partners per year. In a 2003 study, Amsterdam “singles” averaged 22 casual partners/year, while those with a “steady partner” averaged eight (8). The average duration of partnerships was 1.5 years. In a 2005 Canadian vaccine trial, homosexual individuals reported 7 partners in the last 6 months. Excessive sexual promiscuity results in serious medical consequences — indeed, it is a recipe for transmitting disease and generating an epidemic. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has remained a predominantly gay issue in the U.S. primarily because of the greater degree of promiscuity among gays. A study based upon statistics from 1986 through 1990 estimated that 20-year-old gay men had a 50 percent chance of becoming HIV positive by age 55. A 2010 CDC data analysis reveals that the rate of primary and secondary syphilis among MSM (men who have sex with men) is more than 46 times that of other men and more than 71 times that of women. http://factsaboutyouth.com/posts/promiscuity/ moreResolved Question: Why do republicans always create a total economic disaster?

I get the feeling black people rarely or never adopt kids - due to the overwhelming 'single parent' problem in the black community. If they are generally less capable of caring for their own kids, then why would they ever consider taking care of someone else's? Why can't I find any racial statistics about people who adopt? Is it to protect black people's dignity? I can find plenty of stats about the race of the children oddly enough, so why not? It's important because black kids represent almost 50% of foster children in the US. As such, adoptive parents (nearly all white) usually end up adopting black kids.
