I'm 13. And A Freshman. My best friend in the eintire world, Kaitie just got back from being gone for a month, She is leaving on July 6th for another month. You have t understand, shes my BEST friend. I love her to death. Lat night, me, her and our other friend Kayla went to the mall. Kaities older sister drove us to the mall. We had a 'GREAT time. Then, she drove us ack to Kaities house. We watched a movie and then Kaylas mom came ad took us home. My parents are mad because: I got in a car with a teenager I didn't call to say when I would be home Our plans changed, and we went back to her house My points: Kaites sister is VERY responsible She is almost 18. she has perrfect grades, never drinks, etc. She wont even let us talk in the car. I never ever do anything bad. I have a 4.0 gpa, I've never had a detention, I babysit almost daily for my parents, my room is ALWAYS clean, I have never tried drugsof achohol, even when given the oppertunity. I never get to see my BFF anymore. I need to be able to see her! My parents refuse to drive me places. That pisses my friends parents and friends off enough. Sometimes they will take us one way (too the mall but not home). They either need to take me places or accept the ride I am offered. I did call my Dad's cell, send a text and call my home phone to say we were going to Kaaites house. They never answered. I have no curfew established. If I had one, maybe I would have said something. Her Points: Statistics of Teen Driving She said No She's the parent (Just because she is the parent doesn;t mean she is always right in my opinion. ) Help. was I really wrong? more

Voting Question: Considering how many people are dying of obesity, why do anorexics like Michael Jackson get all the attention.?

In Canada, 36% of teenagers are overweight or obese. 59% of adults in Canada are overweight/obese. In the United States 44% of teenagers are overweight/obese and 71% of adults are overweight/obese. The statistics for anorexia/bulimia for both countries is a stable 4% of adult women and less than 0.5% of adult males. Obesity causes far more suffering for loved ones as well. Check out the posts on myfatspouse.org. I'm so tired of hearing about anorexia. It is like the difference between Cancer and Mad Cow disease. One is a common killer and the other is as rare as a black ocelot. more

Resolved Question: Sexual abuse related to mental disorders?

as a young child I was sexually abused( I think I was between the ages of 4 and 7), I am now a teenager who thinks that I might have many disorders including: schizotypal disorder, depression, insomnia, ADHD, bipolar/borderline disorder, Paranoid disorder, obsessive compulsive personality disorder, histrionic disorder, and (though it directly conflicts with the disorder before this) socail anxiety. Statistics show that many patients with mental health issues were sexually abused as children. I just recently connected the 2 and thought that that might explain somehing. My issue is that to me that doesn't feel like the cause because this abuse wasn't a forced situation since at the time i didn't know what they were doing was wrong(molestation). So is it possible that a disorder can result from this when the abuse wasn't somethinpg that haunts me? Also it feels as if it is completley irrelevant when I compare the two situations?histionic disorder is one of the least likely ones because of the fact that anytime I do something to get attention I start shaking at the thought of people watching me or noticing me, like I almost deleted this question because someone said that if I had histrionic disorder this is bulshit that is only here for attention and I don't want more people to judge me like that. I think I might have so many disorders because a lot of the symptoms are extremely similarI have never really thought very negatively about the molestir and do not hold anything against myself for it so I doubt I need to forgive myself for anything and the main disorder is borderline(which has insomnia and ADHD as symptoms) and socail anxiety more

Voting Question: Atheists, why do you thumbs-down statistics?

My answer to another question on Y!A got seven thumbs-downs: Q: Why does nobody take me seriously when I say I'm an atheist? A: "Because when you're a teenager it's cool to be an atheist. Teenagers love to rebel against their parents, and it's relatively normal for teenagers with religious parents (or who live in a community like the U.S. with a strong Christian/religious demographic) to think of themselves as atheists. The fact is, something like 4/5 of Americans believe in God. Teenagers who call themselves atheist will (most of the time, per these statistics) decide that they believe in God as they get older." Do atheists really DENY that the reason many teenagers call themselves atheists is because it's cool and rebellious? Do they deny the general trend that the older you get, the more likely you are to be spiritual? Do they deny that about 4/5 Americans believe in God? Granted, I am well-aware that there are plenty of genuine, mature atheists out there who believe what they do after careful reflection. But to suggest that there isn't a bandwagon factor influenceng atheist youth is just ignorant. Atheists, why do you thumbs-down statistics?I am more than willing to admit that many religious persons only believe what they do because of their parents, or because of their culture, and not because of genuine self-reflection. This frustrates me, but I admit it is a reality.Right.... ok.... 1. I'm 19 years old. That makes me a teenager. 2. "Atheism is cool" is something I've observed personally 3. "Something lik 4/5 Americans believe in God" is something I've heard cited many times. A quick Google search (apparently everybody is incapable verifying this temselves) shows it's actually more like 9/10: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,99945,00.html http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91808354 etc. 4. If you'd bothered to read my previoius added details you will see me admit that religion is also bandwagoned. more

Resolved Question: Ramadan: Some facts about the West................?

Did you know that Islam will NEVER take root in any significant numbers in the West? Islam is too dogmatic, too culturally centered around Arabs and Arabia to EVER take hold in the West. Islam is not growing at all in the West. The few Caucasian wannabe reverts who marry Muslim guys for their money do not constitute great growth. Islam is growing in the West SOLELY due to high birth rates. THe Muslim children born in the West will leave Islam as soon as they become teenagers. There are such people on YA Ramadan as we speak. I am from Los Angeles, and trust me, there are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of teenagers/young adults who in no way practice Islam as their parents do. Islam is a dying religion. In fact, statistics show that ALL religions are dying, but Islam much faster than others. A religion specific to Arabian nomads from 1500 years ago has no relevance in today's world. And, by the way, how are the Muslim-run countries doing? Do they have a good quality of life? No. I think not. Islam is a sinking ship; get off now, before you sink.WHY ARE NONE OF YOU ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF ISLAM'S DWINDLING NUMBERS?muslimah: Look at your language; you call yourself a real Muslim? more

Voting Question: Honest question to Pro-lifers-- how would you react if a child or teenager told you...?

That they wished they'd been aborted, or that their parents were selfish not to? Now before you think this has something to do with the Tiller Drama, it doesn't. I ask something like this fairly often to get opinions. And don't assume that it doesn't happen. Statistically the majority foster kids, and some adoptees have expressed this idea, as have a plurality of disabled kids. (And that's only those that will admit it to someone doing statistical surveys.) Statistically: every year 2-6 percent of congenitally disabled children 12 and under commit suicide, and another 14-20 percent attempt it for the first time. Of children in chronic children's wards, or those with congenital diseases, 87% wish that they'd never been born. --Statistics from last year, from my volunteering packet , in the chronic children's ward of a major medical centre, which was given as part of a course to help connect with the children as a volunteer. With foster children, the statistics are 52% that wish they had never been born, and 11% attempt suicide, and 6% succeed and 8% that do not attempt again before leaving foster care. These are just two examples. There are plenty in other situations, or no major situations, who are not depressed, who would agree with the sentiment, I'm sure, but these are the only official statistics I'm aware of. Does 'think of the children' extend this far? Or do you think anyone who thinks they should have been aborted is depressed? (Not true, many don't want to die, or are depressed)Added: Please try to be respectful of all viewpoints, and I give no thumbs down.Edit: Actually, if you read it, it refers to both disabled children and foster kids. Read the question a little more carefully. And yes, the statistics do also refer to those adopted from birth. more

Resolved Question: what do you think of this?

2nd journalism assigment, honest opinions plz, i know its controvertial but i didnt pick the subject. prt 1 TEENAGE MOTHERS ON A RISE By Aimee Davis In recent years, the number of teenage mothers has hit a record high not just in Australia but all over the world. Studies have shown that the United States and New Zealand have the largest number of teen pregnancies and births in the world, while Japan and South Korea have the lowest. It is estimated that annually 13.1 million women under the age of 20 give birth, with more than 90% of these births occurring in developing countries. In Australia, The birth rates to teen mothers alone are around 19 live births for every 1, 000th teenager, coming in 6th among OECD countries for teenage pregnancy. A recent report published in the Medical Journal of Australia highlights a frightening compilation of statistics on the nation's teenagers and the results of their risky sexual behavior. Dr Henrietta Williams, the senior medical officer with Family Planning Victoria says that “We do a lot better than countries such as the States with regards to the numbers of unplanned pregnancies and the numbers of sexually transmitted infections in young people, But we don't do nearly as well as countries such as Holland, who have managed to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies amongst teenagers dramatically in the last ten to fifteen years”. The reason for such trends, especially with the current global financial crisis is that having a baby young provides the mother with the stability required to go back to school, quit drugs and alcohol and get a job, with some Queensland schools even devising special programs for young mothers to complete their education. Professor Julie Quinlivan says that studies have shown that disadvantaged teens that fell pregnant often had better life outcomes then those who did not. She said that these girls also help save the economy money, as pregnancy helped them engaged in more services which helped them develop a more focused plan for the future. It may be controversial but from a societal or evolutionary point of view, these young women might just be doing the right thing for themselves Prof. Quinlivan says. It is an extremely common misconception that all teen mothers are likely to become bad mothers; however this is not the case; more often than not it is the socio-economic status of the parents that determine this. Professor Quinlivan says that it isn’t the age of the mother that matters, but rather the adverse social area that she originates from. “People look down on me for having a baby so young. They think that I can’t do as good of a job as someone twice my age, that I can’t afford to keep my child or that I won’t be able to take care of her. It’s hard to explain how I feel about the way these people judge me” says Amy Boneham, 19. She fell pregnant with her daughter Sienna when she was just 16. She says that having her daughter has changed her life and given her something more than parties and alcohol to think about. She runs a successful business from home to help pay the living expenses involved with having a child. “All up, I only spend about $140 dollars a week on Si Including The fee’s for kindy so it isn’t too hard on my budget” In recent times, it has become commonplace for young mothers and their partners to live at one of the couples parents’ houses while trying to find their feet, with it being widely accepted that the father will work to support the mother and child while she takes care of the baby. Christy Bennett, 16 says that while she doesn’t find it stressful juggling a baby with bills and living expenses she still likes to stay informed of the current economic situation. “My partner works, and we live with my parents for now so I have all the financial and emotional support I can get. My mother is great, she helps me out alot” Although her and her boyfriend Gene didn’t plan the birth plan the birth of their daughter, Sophia they say they couldn’t be happier. “Before Sophia my life was boring and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but now I have direction” Christie says. “I would love to get into reception when Sophia gets older”. The Australian government recently introduced a family income test, to determine the eligibility of the mothers in accordance with their taxable income within the first 6 months of birth for families with children born on the 1st of January onwards, with it only being available to families that have earnt under $75, 000 in this period. If the family is found eligible and the mother and/or father are under 18, then baby bonus is then payed in 13 installments, over 6 months. With the Governments new baby bonus scheme for parents under 18 it has become increasingly easy to provide for the child and to make sure that they always have appropriate food, clothes and living quarters.Danielle Graham, 17 says that the installments of $380 a fortnight instead of the previous lump sum payment takes a lot of stress off her and her partner Aaron as the payments last longer and get used more efficiently. Danielle says that these installments combined with Centrelinks parenting payments are enough to support her family for now, as her partner is currently looking for work. Although their family was semi-planned they did not expect to fall pregnant as soon as they did. “It’s really hard to take care of my son, especially with Aaron having no job. I don’t particularly pay attention to the economy but I’m certainly feeling it. Luckily we have just been approved for a Government funded house, so it will be good to have that security. I don’t know how we would cope without out parenting payments and the baby bonus”. Resolved Question: Abortion: Debate: Murder or a personal choice?

Question: Is abortion morally wrong, or is it an important choice? Please explain your point of view (if you want, support it with facts, statistics, but you don't have to, because that requires research =p) Follow up (optional): What is your religion, and has it in any way, influenced your opinion of abortion? Okay, so I want to see both points of view on this issue. However. Please be respectful of both parties' opinions. This means, no calling someone a murderer, no calling people evil, etc. You get my gist. I'd like it if people could respond to one another's answers, almost like a debate, in edits, or in the main answer. Here are some statistics about abortion. In case you wanna use them or something. WORLDWIDE Number of abortions per year: Approximately 42 Million Number of abortions per day: Approximately 115,000 UNITED STATES Who's having abortions (age)? 52% of women obtaining abortions in the U.S. are younger than 25: Women aged 20-24 obtain 32% of all abortions; Teenagers obtain 20% and girls under 15 account for 1.2%. Likelihood of abortion: An estimated 43% of all women will have at least 1 abortion by the time they are 45 years old. 47% of all abortions are performed on women who have had at least one previous abortion. Thanks for all the great answers! Everyone has such different viewpoints on this issue, and it's interesting to me, as a pro choicer, to see the opposing viewpoint. more

However, I'm coming to realize just how different this weekend is for teens. Consider these statistics: "On a typical prom weekend in the United States 48 teenagers are killed, 5,202 are injured, and 40% of them are alcohol related." Now the reason I wrote this is because today we were given a presentation on drunk driving, and like most presentations I showed up so I could miss Calculus class. Although I see drunk driving as a problem, I never really associated anyone I know with potentially being involved in these types of accidents. We were given a rough statistic by the Transportation Department that if we were to look around the cafeteria pick out 10 faces, 1 of them will die in a alcohol related accident. This shocked me. Now, my senior class is not a big class, there are 205 of us. I couldn't imagine anyone of my senior class dying, not here, it seems impossible. Now I appreciate that you took the time to read this, and if you did perhaps you could give me some input here. I'm just another teen in this world voicing my opinion and concerns, if you so choose to make a disrespectful comment in relation to this question, please keep it to yourself. So, my question to those who are graduating this year, or are attending prom party is: How do you plan on getting home safely prom weekend? Sorry for the long read. Thanks guys. The maturity level on yahoo answers still amazes me.Please, someone point out the part in my question where I said that I didn't associate with people that drink. I have 15 beer for Saturday night. Every single one of my friends drink, and I do enjoy it. more

Resolved Question: Secret life and marriage of teenagers?

Hi, i'm italian...I'm watching the first season of "the secret life of the american teenager" on MTV. Please, don't tell me that will happen in the second season! In the first season Ben give to Amy a marriage ring, but they are only 15th!I want ask to you: it's normal in USA the marriage between teenagers? It's frequently? Because in Italy this thing seems very absurd! In fact here in Italy there is a concept of life very particular: we saw the life likes "blocks" (how say my statistics teacher), the time for study, the time for find the job, the time to buy home and the time to marry. Is the same thing in USA? Or it's normal marry very young (for ex: 17-18-20 years?) Here in Italy many times ago the people married very young... Excuse me for my english...ciao!@lolz: truely? I ever see room raiders or made... But the secret life of the american teenagers is made by ABCfamily, but in Italy is given by MTV, because the other television RAI (the tv of the state) and Mediaset (the tv of our goodfather) made their f.u.c.k.e.d. fictions for old@daughter_of_good: Yes, in the shows there are fantasy and reality! There're films or telefilms that are near the reality and i've asked if the "secret life" was near the reality... more

Resolved Question: How does the media misuse statistics?

I needed examples on the misuse of statistics in the media. Whether it be relating to health, war, or things about teenagers that create stereotypes. more

Resolved Question: Your the teen that's actually mature? I'm rambling..?

I for one hate it when adults lump all teenagers in like were one giant entity. Yeah, you probably didn't think I knew that word. They generalize us. I know their are many teens of this generation who smoke weed, have sex causally. I can so sick of my peers feeding this stereotype. There are teens that can have intellectual conversations without using ,like, in every sentence. Hello I'm one of them. Nice to meet you. You can pass 100 teens at the mall, but the only ones who act up you see. I also know for a fact that just because you’re an adult doesn't make you better than me. You may think you are in terms of experience, but as a human being your not. I' know their are some adults in this world, steal, abuse their children, murder their children. Have sex with multiple partners. Corrupt our government. It is called hypocrisy, don’t tell me their isn't. As I was I admit trolling for some people who shared my views, one person answered that teens put their friends first, I DO Not. I right now, have two people at my high school I really trust. The cliques here are horrible. Fights break out almost 5 times in a single week. Our principal was accused of sexually harassing a student's mom. Two teachers were found out having an affair with each other. And you tell me I'm a rebellious teen whose opinion is worth nothing. You think I like living in the fifth ring of hell. So far I haven't like my high school years, probably never will! The only teacher I really have any respect for is my English teacher. The most realest and funniest woman I know. She dishes out real life as it is. I know that I'm not another statistic. And I know that I'm not another stereotype. Labels are rude. I don't use those either. I know who I am and that's it. No one else does. You don't know me better than myself. Yeah, I've been followed by store employees. Do they have a reason to distrust me? No. Is it because I'm a teenager? Most likely. I know what a want to do with my life. I've been looking into colleges since I was in middle school. I know what career I want to go into and if that doesn't work I have a backup plan and a plan for that. I also don't want children when I'm older. I really don't want to be anybody's mom. I’m not one of those girls whose life is to have a fairytale wedding and have six children. I realized Prince Charming isn't going to show up on a white stallion and rescue me. Once I graduated high school with top grades, honor roll student by the way, I'm leaving this god forsaken place I call a city and not looking back! Nobody to worry about but myself. Sorry if I sound selfish, but that’s just the way I am. Why I'm rambling I don't know, but I need to get these words out. Another answered I found that angers me to no in is. Sometimes at 15 and 16 you still don't know right from wrong. First of all I know, for example, not to get into a car with someone who’s been drinking. I've been offered drugs twice, BUT I've turned those people down. I THINK I KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG. DO YOU KNOW!? I know that if a put a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger I'm going to jail. It's called common sense. Do you have it. You haven't lived my life, do not, I repeat do not, think you KNOW me. The adults make unfair assumptions about teenagers, and so the teenagers rebel because they don’t like the attitude of the adults. I think both adults and teenagers just need to stop and listen to each other properly for a change. Because you WONDER why Suzy takes a razor blade to her wrist, or WONDER why John overdoses on pills, or WONDER why Mimi hangs herself. The purpose of life is to work so we can make money to pay our bills? Almost every adult does that right? We work so that we can buy a house. We use the house so that we may eat, and rest. We rest so that we feel refreshed the next day. The next day we go back to work. Do basically your doing one job or some adults don't even have a job. But maybe you also have a part time job.. I'm just rambling. This really didn't turn out to be a question. more

Resolved Question: Hey teens, i need help with my report/collage thing? (it's not hard, it's mostly an opinion)?

Okay we are doing a collage and a report on a teen issue and we had to do our thesis statement and 1st paragraph for our report, for homework tonight. i'm pretty tired and don't think it sounds good. what are you guys opinions? [thesis] The amount of teenage pregnancies rise each year. Did you know that there are an estimate of one million teen pregnancies in the united states alone? Why do you think so many teens get pregnant? Many say it’s because many schools don’t provide sex education and many parents don’t have important “sex talks” with their children. In this essay I’m going to state the facts, statistics, and hardships that come along with teenage pregnancies. [first paragraph] The united states has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western Industrialized world. On average teen pregnancy costs the united states at least $7 billion dollars annually. The statistics state that thirty four percent of young women become pregnant before they reach the age of twenty. Which is about 820,000 women a year. Eight out of ten of these pregnancies are unintended and seventy nine percent are to unmarried teens They say that race also is a factor in the statistics of teen pregnancy. The birth rate for black teens aged 15 to 19, was 42 percent between 1991 to 2002. While the birth rate of Hispanic teens declined 20 percent between 1991 to 2002. However, the statistics of teen pregnancies in these groups remain higher then all other groups. Hispanic teens now have the highest birth rates. About 40 teenage girls get pregnant out of every 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19. According to the Cdc’s latest statistics, the teen pregnancy rate rose 3 percent, recently. Before 1980 most teenagers who gave birth were married while most teens who give birth today are unmarried. thanks people who actually read it ;] ahah, do you think it sounds good? also, about the collage we need to make. the teacher gave us an example, like about teens taking steroids, on the collage you could put different guys with different body types, which shows and stresses the fact that all guys have different body issues and insecurities which makes them take steroids. so, what can i do for my collage about teen pregnancy? i was thinking put the effects that teen pregnancy causes. such as putting a picture of a teen depressed, but i really dont know i'm stuck, what do you think? COOKIES FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO READ ALL OF THIS!! lol thanks for answering ;]About the question thing my teacher said we can start the thesis with a question, a shoking statistic, or whatever we want. :)oh no! i'm not saying they are all unwanted and etc, i know that i support teen pregnancy but i am doing what my teacher wants and stating the facts from internet articles, it's a research thing not an opinion thing because if it was about my opinion all of it would be positive things. and i know it sounds really boring lol, but in the other paragraphs i'm going to go more into detail you know? and as for the thesis, she said get right to the point and said you can say "in this essay" because she wrote that in her example she showed us. i know they usually say dont write that but she said it was okay so i wrote it, :)and about the depressed thing, in the articles it says teen pregnancy could lead to depression, that's why i was thinking about putting that on the collagethis isn't my final copy also, we are just writing peices of it and will be writing the whole thing at a later date. more

Voting Question: which one i better: sat fat or trans fat? also give me tips or medicine that make me sleep better.?

i'm only 14, but i already have sleeping problems. i used to be a very easy sleeper, but now everything's changed. usually i go to bed at 9, but cant fall asleep until 9 30 or sometimes 10. but that's not all. i'd wake up at about 4 5 o'clock in the morning and desperately try to get back to sleep. sometimes i'd sleep again 30min or 1hr later, and would reluctantly get up at 6 15 to get ready for school, tired, sleepy. there're times when i lie awake on bed from 4 to 6 and then shoot up to eat breakfast and go to school. it's happened for almost 2 months. and i feel miserable and frustrated. i'm a teenager, according to statistics, i should get at least 8 hr sleep everyday at my age. sadly, now i get used to 7, and the results are pathetic. give me good tips that come from your own experience. also give me some brands of medicine that i can go to the pharmacist and get them from the aisle without doctor's prescription. thank you for saving my life more

Resolved Question: Have you noticed a difference between blacks and whites..?

when it comes to drinking culture? The reason I ask is because I've noticed that in college, many black people I know don't drink beer, preferring hard liquor instead (I'm generalizing, but I go to a small school that doesn't have that many black people, so I know I'm not shooting in the dark). There are also differences prior to drinking age, with black teenagers tending to drink less than their white counterparts, with the figures leveling out as age increases. http://www.alcoholismresources.com/teenage_alcoholism_statistics.html I'm well aware that race in this equation could be substituted for a combination of ethnic/class/upbringing factors, but it's no secret that beverages like Alize and Hennessy are targeted at an ummm, more "melnin enriched" demographic and it isn't by accident. I just want to know whether you think there is a clear and cut reason for this. If you don't believe a difference exists, feel free to express your opinion. Also, while this question is obviously geared to an American audience, non-Americans are welcomed to offer their thoughts and experiencesSilly Fart- It's funny you mention that because I was originally going to skew this question to a male audience because I'm well aware of the fact that alot of women eschew beer because of the calories. I should also note that America is a binge drinking culture, especially in our demographic. Not many people drink on non-weekend nights. Typo- *melanin more

Voting Question: Is this good enough HELP! i know its long but please just proof read it and tell me what you think.?

Driving under the influence of Alcohol The amount of young people with driving licences driving under the influence of alcohol is becoming more common. To get through to stop driving after they've had a few drinks is also getting harder. P platers find themselves having a knew freedom, influteting as invincible. Most friday or saturday nights some young people will find themselves with a bottle of alcohol in there hand. They might be out at a club or party. They drove there car to the location. Some have a designated driver, some don't. Im sure people who dont have a designated driver are aware that it is illegal to be over the limit and drive. I hope there also aware that its not only illegal but its very unsafe, not only to them but there passengers and other people on the road. Statistics are still showing that the amount of accidents per year while driving under the influence of alcohol are still very high. Why is it still happening? When driving a vehicle under the influence, you may not realize what your actually doing. Your passengers may pressure you to do things you may not want to do that could inflict a possible danger. They may pressure you to do things you thought you probably couldnt do when sober. Its the drivers responsibility to make the safest desions and not become under any influence of an idea of a passenger. Even when having only a small amount of alcohol it can affect every organ of your body. It effects your central nervous system. And depending on your tolerance to alcohol you can be as little or as much affected by it. Adolescents up to 18 years have a greater vulnerability to alcohol than adults do because they are usually physically smaller, meaning that their bodies process alcohol considerably more slowly and less efficiently than adult bodies do. Young people lack drinking experience and its effects, and so have no basis for assessing or regulating their drinking. Young women process alcohol much less efficiently than males. Amongst those aged 14-17 years, who were surveyed in 2001, 64% of males and 69% of females were current drinkers. Males (21%) and females (25%) drank at least once a month, at levels that placed them at risk of short-term harm. Binge drinking - commonly including drinking to intoxication—is most common among 14-25 year olds. Just finishing high school (‘schoolies week’) is often linked to episodes of very high levels of binge drinking, and/or deliberately drinking to intoxication. Over 70% of male and 60% of female school leavers report getting drunk on most or all days or nights of their ‘schoolies week’. Loss of inhibitions and decision-making skills place young people at particular risk of violence, accidents and sexual coercion. Young people tend to ignore all of these factors simply because they dont believe it can happen to them. Even with the newspapers and news showcasing the fact that a car accident had occured recently and had killed two teenagers due to the fact they had been drinking and were speeding. Young people drink alcohol for many reasons They might be curious, or want to be one of the group. Some young people drink because it makes them feel older, or because it gives them a certain image among friends. Some people drink when they go to parties and nightclubs to enjoy themselves more. The alcohol might make them feel more relaxed. Alcohol should be consumed responsibly and at no-point should a decision to drive be made by someone intoxicated. http://www.alcohol.gov.au/internet/alcohol/publishing.nsf/Content/fs-young http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=243&id=2188&np=163Its for school year 10. more

Resolved Question: how can i improve this newspaper article for my GCSE coursework?

To drink, or not to drink? Life as a teenager is hard, and it’s easy to want to relieve some of that stress, but as the casualties related to teenage drinking are gradually increasing is it time we asked ourselves if enough is enough? Youths all over the UK are at danger of alcohol poisoning and many other dangerous side effects. I myself am a teenager, and despite the fact I do not drink alcohol, I have seen what it can do to even the most gracious of people causing them to undergo a stunning transformation from polite, healthy and in control of themselves, to rude, dangerous and a threat to themselves and everybody around them. Is the money spent on alcohol really worth all the trouble? Thousands of teenagers throughout the United Kingdom are being hospitalised by this dangerous legal drug because they are unable to control themselves when it comes to the consumption of alcohol, and as the statistics only seem to get worse, more and more teenagers are throwing away all of their career prospects for a small thrill that is cancelled out the next morning by a painful hangover and an empty wallet According to the BBC, Last year more than 5,000 girls under the age of sixteen needed hospital treatment after binging on alcohol, this number which includes girls as young as ten has elevated by a worrying 21% over the past five years. This astounding increase shows the problems of the growing “chav” culture which has led to many teenagers being diagnosed with liver disease at an extremely young age. Not only can this money draining substance cause severe problems to the body, alcohol bingeing has also been linked with anti-social behaviour and the use of other drugs, this could mean that when drinking excess alcohol, you’re potentially steering your self on the path to brain damage, lung cancer and inevitably an avoidable short life. “Teenage drinking is becoming a threat to the future of our country” said Judie Hardman from the teenage health association.” More and more teenagers are throwing away their futures for alcohol” when drinking excess alcohol not only are you emptying your wallet in the short term, but you are also putting your whole future at risk. Studies show that too much exposure to the chemical ethanol found in alcoholic beverages, could eventually reduce brain function. This will of course lead to lower grades and ultimately a lower income in the future. Is the uncontrollable feeling of dizziness and instability really worth throwing away your future for? All these things are completely avoidable if teenagers would be more conscious about what their doing to their bodies every time they misuse this potentially deadly substance. And would be out of the question for us to wait until we are within the legal age limit to start drinking? After all this age limit is for are own safety, if people would just be more sensible when making such life changing decisions teenagers all across the country would be a lot better off. more

Resolved Question: Why do you support Abstinence education? Is it right?

Which is better, abstinence education which teaches teens to wait until marriage or education which teachers kids about safe sex? Abstinence education causes teens to wait until marriage, but marry younger, as these above images and information show. They also, cause higher teen pregnancy, married or unmarried, which leads to depression, poverty and a greater likelihood of the children ending up in jail or as teen mothers themselves. Younger marriages mean higher divorce rates too. Sex education and not supporting waiting until marriage actually causes less teen pregnancy, which is why so many people want it. If we teach kids about sex and how to have it safely, then they will be less likely to marry young, become pregnant as teenagers and get divorced. Students are more likely to finish high school too. Is it still better to support abstinence education even it will cause people to marry people they may not know well? Shouldn't we know our partners inside and out before we marry them? The average age of marriage in the Northeast is 29 for men and about 26.5 for women, while in the South the age is 25.8 for men and 25.2 for women, according to polls. Here are the statistics of divorce Under 20 years old 27.6%(women) 11.7%(men) 20 to 24 years old 36.6% 38.8% 25 to 29 years old 16.4% 22.3% It continues to go down from here Studies show that religion is more common in the south. Abstinence only education is also higher in the south. Teen pregnancy is higher Teen marriage is higher Divorce rates are higher. Less people graduate from high school. Similarity? I think so.Actually, I tried to post links, but Yahoo kept deleting this question because it thought ti was spam due to all the links. Go look it up yourself more

Voting Question: Whats a good song to play in the background of my podcast for school?

for school we are doing Podcasts on controversial topics, and we have to include statistics. I did mine on video game violence. and I want to put a song in the background of my podcast but I don't know what song. Heres my script (as in this is what I'm going to say.) I'm having another person help me say the stuff. where it says Chenay (thats me) and where it says other, thats the other person thats going to help me. I know its kind of alot to read but it would really help me alot. And could you tell me if you can tell weather i'm for or against violence in video games. (my teacher says that the listener should be able to tell waether you agree or dissagree with your topic without comming right out and saying it) So, my script: Chenay: In the past 30 years video games have had a major effect on how people spend their free time. Chenay: Did you know that 70 of the top video games, 90% of them contained violence? Other: 74% of families with school age children own video game equipment. Chenay: More than 70% of teens have played the violent video game Grand Theft Auto. Other: Which is rated ‘M’ for mature. Chenay: In 1999, two boys launched an assault on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, murdering 13 and wounding 23 before turning the guns on themselves. No one knows exactly why they did this, but we do know that they both enjoyed playing a violent video game called Doom. Other: About 40% of those that play mature rated games are under the age of 18. Chenay: 78% of unaccompanied children, ages 13-16 were able to buy mature rated games at retail stores. Other: Children are leaving traditional toys and play at younger and younger ages in favor of electronic entertainment. Chenay: Toy sales were slow in 2001. And video game sales were up 43%. Other: Boys ages 8-18 play at LEAST 40 minutes of video games a day. Chenay: 78% of all violent video games, within the first 10 minutes of play involve lethal violence. Other: 78% of that violence was shown up close. Chenay: 60% of games rated ‘E’ for everyone required the player to injure characters before they could continue playing. Other: 90% of teenagers say that their parents don’t check the rating on the video game before they buy it. Chenay: A child witnesses over 10,000 acts of violence on television before she enters school. Other: So far no one can actually prove that playing violent video games lead to a crime that was committed, but many believe so. Chenay: You can’t judge a video game by its cover. Neither, can you judge how much violence it contains based on its rating. So thanks soo much. more
