Open Question: Statistics 211 Question?
Q: Calls to a customer service center last on average 1.6 minutes with a standard deviation of 1.8 minutes. An operator in the call center is required to answer 89 calls each day. Assume the call times are independent. a. What is the expected total amount of time in minutes the operator will spend on the calls each day? b. What is the standard deviation of the total amount of time in minutes the operator will spend on the calls each day? c. What is the approximate probability that the total time spent on the calls will be greater than 139 minutes? Give your answer to four decimal places. Use the standard deviation as you entered it above to answer this question. d. What is the value c such that the approximate probability that the total time spent on the calls each day is less than c is 0.95? Give your answer to four decimal places. Use the standard deviation as you entered it above to answer this question. I'm confused as to how I go about incorporating the fact the standard deviation is larger than the mean. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Callie moreResolved Question: If illegals are costing one state their education costs are nearly $12 billion annually how much would it be?
If illegals are costing one state their education costs are nearly $12 billion annually how much would it be if an accounting of the costs were added up across America ? The legislator most responsible for bringing comprehensive immigration reform — the law-and-order kind — to the Sooner State presses on. State Rep. Randy Terrill, a Republican member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, has authored a bill — Quality of Education Assessment for Oklahoma Citizens Act of 2010 — which would mandate that public school districts “measure and assess” how many of the enrolled students are here illegally. One purpose of the assessment? To learn what the cost is to legal Oklahomans. It’s a fair query. And a pertinent one. The education of these children is no small endeavor. Taxpayers have a right to know those numbers, as do lawmakers who bear the responsibility of crafting and voting for state budgets. Citing statistics compiled by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), of Washington, D.C., Terrill estimates that in 2006 Oklahoma spent $160 million a year educating students who are unlawfully in the United States. Nationwide the total K-12 public school expenditure for illegal immigrant education costs the states nearly $12 billion annually. Americans have to thank the U.S. Supreme Court for this educational budget buster. In a 5-to-4 majority vote, the Supremes, in the case known as Plyler v. Doe (1982), ruled that states cannot withhold education funding to children who are illegal aliens. This, despite the fact that Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., writing for the majority, opined that “public education is not a ‘right’ granted to individuals by the Constitution.” That confession, from an unapologetic liberal no less, is of scant comfort to those who, today, bear the burden for instructing those students due to this bizarre foray into judicial activism. http://www.jbs.org/jbs-news-feed/6078-randy-terrill-fights-oklahoma-illegal-aliens moreOpen Question: Should public education be reformed?
I say yes! I'm a freshman in high school, and go to one of the best school districts around (the houses around it are more expensive because people want their kids to go there) and still we hardly learn anything! 7 hours a day 5 days a week, and all we have to show for it is a report card. Nearly all of it goes straight through your head after you've taken the test, and I'd be willing to bet that less than 50% of the class time is spent teaching! The statistics say that the teacher to pupil ratio in texas is 14 to one. They are wrong its more like 20 to one AT LEAST. Also discipline is laxed, they hit us with the paddle until 5th grade, when the school district said that it was quote "a barbaric, out of date punishment style, which has no place in the positive learning environment we wish to create." I think this is crazy, since then fights and disrespect towards teachers has increased by probably 50% or more! The kids have no respect for authority or their teachers, we have a policeman at our school! A policeman! In one of the best districts around! I think that Obama should work on fixing the broken education system, not health care which isn't even broken. Teachers also rely heavily on homework, without fully teaching the subject, so it is very difficult to do it sometimes. 1 more thing, the TAKS test, the texas assessment of knowledge and skills is probably the easiest test ever made, a 3rd grader could probably pass it, and thats what you're supposed to know to graduate! They're making high school worthless, I don't know how the kids of my generation are going to make it in college, we don't learn a thing. Not a damn thing.Proud texan, i don't know if longer school days would help, they would probably make kids just hate school more. What they need to do, is train teachers better. Get creative, intelliget people to be teachers (some of them are, of course, but quite a few are just the backwash)Alex, You are my case and point! Texas schools are rated 14 in the nation, and you saw how terrible they were. Now imagine how horrible mississipi schools (the worst in the nation) must be. moreOpen Question: How much time do people spend Online?

I drink as much as I can and go to sleep waking up playing my favorite video games or reading the news and stuff over the internet.Sometimes I will walk over to the gym on the weekend to workout which I normally only do on the weekend if I decide to go outside. I never think very much about going to Church or getting married but I think that is was makes my personal life so peaceful. All you Christians do on the weekend I guess is to contribute to the worlds problems and all of the bad statistics in America. I spend most of the time in my bedroom when I am supposed to be studying on the computer procrastinating (like I am doing now)... I can spend up to 7 hours on the computer today when I have school books right in front of me and its terrible. I use my laptop and internet for a lot of my study so I cant really just move it out. I am really stressed out at the moment even though we have only had 4 weeks of school this year because I havent really studied yet and have A LOT to catch up on ... I am smart, but I really dislike school.. I dislike a lot of teachers, students and think we mess around too much wasting time in class and at lunch times etc... Do you have any study tips to help me be more motivated to study and to make studying easier for me so I dont have to cram nearer to exams? There's a lot of talk in Washington about increased federal spending on health care. Can anyone give me some numbers(like percentages and statistics) and some sites that show how much power the government ALREADY has in health care? Thank you. moreResolved Question: Is anyone else tired of Obama claiming he inherited this deficit?
Here are some statistics you might want to look at then please share your thoughts. Washington Post babbled again today about Obama inheriting a huge deficit from Bush, blah blah blah. Amazingly enough, a lot of people swallow this nonsense. So once more, I'll try a short civics lesson. Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party. They controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases. For FY 2009, though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets. And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period: If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.I have a chart that shows all spending but I can't copy and paste it. I'll continue so you get the whole picture.Devil Dog I was around during JFK, not so young or dumb.C:\Users\Owner\Documents\deficit spending.jpgObama has a war going on in Afghanistan and had civilian casualty. The costs of information security attacks keep escalating… If we use the statistics on the textbook as a baseline: $80 million in 2004 and 800K exposed records in 2005. These numbers are dwarfed by the cost and the number of incidents in 2008 and 2009 where we are seeing 285 million exposed records per year at a cost into the billions of dollars. Looking at these numbers, it is hard to shake the impression that information security is failing; the problems seem to increase even as we spend more time and money on security. 2- What does the information security industry sell? Are the right products in the market? Is the “security silver bullet” possible? http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-02-17/top-earners-averaged-345-million-in-2007-irs-says-update1-.html From the linked article: Each household in the top 400 of earners paid an average tax rate of 16.6 percent, the lowest since the agency began tracking the data in 1992, the statistics show. Their average effective tax rate was about half the 29.4 percent in 1993, the first year of President Bill Clinton’s administration, when taxes were increased. The statistics underscore “two long-term trends: that income at the very top has exploded and their taxes have been cut dramatically,” said Chuck Marr, director of federal tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington research group that supports increasing taxes on high-income individuals. These folks paid about $60million in taxes.............. What on earth can a households spend $285 million a year on? I'm confused by this claim. I looked up the full text and the guy said that for that one period the CONFIDENCE INTERVAL was slightly short (at 93%) of the level that they normally use as their gauge of statistical significance (they chose 95%). Putting aside for the moment that there is no scientific law that says that 95% MUST be chosen as some sort of absolute cut-off for statistical significance -- as if TWO SIGMA was adopted by some United Nations meeting of a scientific standards committee or ANSI or whatever -- why is the 93% such a shocking "shortfall" to some? I don't get it. Surely if one is looking for long-term trends and dealing with thousands upon thousands of data points about something as complex as climate patterns, wouldn't one have EXPECTED that some of the arbitrary time periods chosen deviate from the mean such that even MULTIPLE drops below two sigma would be expected? (However, in the case of this study, apparently only period period fell slightly short of two sigma, with a 93% score.) I confess that I've forgotten a lot from my Probability & Statistics courses from graduate school -- seeing how about 44 years have passed and I've not been applying it daily because most of my career was spent in areas of science not so focused on that kind of data analysis. BUT I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW FALLING BARELY SHORT OF TWO SIGMA for one of the studied periods can be construed to mean "There has been no global warming since 1995." I admit: I DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT. Can someone please explain it to me? Now if someone is going to claim that the "no global warming" statement from the East Anglia fellow came from another part of the interview, all I can say is that I read it twice PLUS I did text-string searches and I simply couldn't find it anywhere in the interview. SO WHERE DOES THE "QUOTATION" COME FROM? moreResolved Question: does not fitting shocking statistics about teenagers make me a loser?

With the fluctuation of gas prices today, the mileage ratings of vehicles is of importance to most drivers. However, the ratings advertised by car manufacturers may not bear any relationship to what you get, depending on where, when, and how you drive. Nevertheless, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spends countless hours collecting and analyzing data to determine estimated mileage ratings. The EPA places vehicles on a device called a dynamometer – sort of like a great big “treadmill” for cars -- where every car is put through the same routine of accelerating, braking, coasting, stopping, and switching the engine on and off. The mileage obtained during that standard cycle is then adjusted by a numerical factor to get it closer to "real world" experience. Starting with the 2008 model year, the EPA revised those tweaks to bring hybrid mileage ratings closer to actual usage. The 2009 Toyota Prius Hybrid car is advertised as having an overall mileage rating of 48 miles per gallon (mpg) for city driving, and 45 mpg for highway driving. In fact, it turns out that the actual 2009 Prius overall mileage ratings are approximately Normally Distributed with a mean of 47 mpg and a standard deviation of 2.1 mpg. QUESTION TO ANSWER: If you were to randomly select a 2009 Prius, what is the probability that it gets at least 50 mpg? (Round your answer to 4 decimal places. Do NOT include units. Do NOT include any letters, spaces, commas, or any characters other than numbers.) moreVoting Question: What is the most effective way to fight for a reduction in the size of government?
http://townhall.com/columnists/JohnHawkins/2010/02/09/ten_rules_for_anti-government_republican_radicals_in_dc?page=full I agree with 9 out of 10 from this article. I do think he's wrong about earmarks, as I would rather have elected Congressmen spending the money rather than unelected government bureaucrats (I regard earmarks as an issue of Legislative VS Executive power, rather than an issue of corruption or spending as banning earmarks would have no effect whatsoever on spending and government bureaucrats are just as corrupt as politicians, maybe moreso since they are not answerable to the electorate). To these, I would add that many conservatives have a blind spot in the area of defense and are all too willing to support wasteful defense spending (the military certainly overpays for just about everything, as the story a few years ago about the $640 toilet seat illustrated). Another example of wasteful military spending would be using the military for wars that have nothing to do with our national defense (to cite a relatively safe example, Bill Clinton's "humanitarian interventions"). One thing Congress could do to stop the misuse of the military would be to repeal the War Powers Act of 1973 and all other legislation which permits the president to wage war without a declaration of war by Congress. Defense spending is currently the majority of discretionary spending (Social Security and Medicare are not discretionary and are the biggest areas of the budget) and is more than what the rest of the world combined spends on defense. If we count the total amount of defense spending, we end up with around $1 trillion. If we take the GDP for 2009 ($14.2 trillion) and subtract total government spending (the 2009 budget was about $3.5 trillion), we get $10.7 trillion for private (real) GDP. That means that defense spending was around 9 1/3 percent of the economy in 2009. Presumably, with the ongoing depression and Obama's drastic expansion of government spending, private GDP will be lower in 2010, but defense spending will likely be higher. I would also suggest that we start releasing our own modified GDP figures with government spending subtracted to show the true amount of economic growth. This would be a useful statistic to rebut the claims of big government advocates that the economy is growing because of the government's artificial inflation of statistics. moreVoting Question: Should I be a writer, Im 16 and not sure?
Congratulations it's your 18'Th birthday you are a legal adult! Look at all of the things you can do; vote, get married, join the army, buy property, get a tattoo, adopt a child, make your own medical decision, and legally own a gun. Go out and have a drink with your best friends and celebrate! Wait... You can't legally drink alcohol, but you are mature enough to choose the government, decide who you want to spend the rest of your life with, defend your country by putting your life on the line, permanently alter the state of your body, take on the responsibility of another human life, decide what medications you do and don’t want to take, and legally own a weapon that can kill people. Wow that seems like you would need to be really mature, but you can’t go out and have a beer with your friends on a Saturday night, ridiculous… right? The United States is only one of four countries with the minimum drinking age of 21; there are approximately 20 states that have no drinking age at all. That’s 5 times the amount of states that have a legal drinking age of at least 21! One theory is that an 18 year olds body is not developed enough to handle alcohol. Yes, it is true that your body does change as it ages. When you are 18 it is different from when you are 21 but it is also different and more "developed" when you are 56, so since we are more mature at 56 than 21 should that be the legal drinking age? So it's your 21'st birthday and you can now legally drink, there is no magical change that happens in your body that makes it ready for alcohol. Let's face it most people have taken a drink before the age of 21; I know I have and I bet you had a drink before your 21'st birthday too. In fact, in 2005, about 10.8 million people in the United States ages 12-20 (28.2% of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Nearly 7.2 million (18.8%) were binge drinkers, and 2.3 million (6.0%) were heavy drinkers. These numbers are probably shocking to adults, but to teenagers they are probably a little lower than what you expected right? I believe that the reason that alcohol is so tempting to teens is because it's forbidden. It's human nature to want what we can't have, just think back to the story of Adam and Eve from the bible, they weren't supposed to eat the fruit, it was forbidden, but that probably made that apple 10 times better to Adam when he ate it. If the drinking age was lowered to 18 by the time a teen would want to drink, let's say 15, they would most likely think; "Well, it's only 3 more years, I'd rather not be a criminal and just wait 3 years". But know a 15 year old thinks "Well, jeez 6 years, I need to at least try it; I can't possibly wait 6 years to drink, seriously". Okay so for arguments sake let’s just say that they think we are mature enough and that they just want to lower drunk driving deaths. There have been statistics thrown out there saying how the lower drinking age has saved “countless lives”, these numbers are not scientific and are just estimated. The truth is since the 80’s education has increased and people are more informed than ever. So there has been talk about a “drinking license” where if you were below 21 and wanted to drink you would have to take a class on responsible alcohol consumption, which sounds cool to me. Why not be informed on what you are putting in your body and be aware of how to do it responsibly. The reality of it is even though the legal drinking age is 21, that is not the average age that people take there first sip of alcohol. Three out of every four students (75%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, about two fifths of students (41%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by 8th grade, and More than half (58%) of 12th graders report having been drunk at least once in their life. One fifth (20%) of 8th graders report having been drunk at least once in their life. These numbers are not going to decrease; they’re just going to keep growing. The media glorifies alcohol and its effects. I my self was even told by a teacher that it was normal to drink in high school, that’s what the reality of our country is I truly believe that if at 18 you are responsible enough to go to war and risk your life you are more the mature enough to drink alcohol. So kids are not changing for the laws, so maybe we should change the laws for the kids. Judge it on the wrting. Do you think that I have any potential to be a writer? I would love your opinions not only on the issue but the writing moreResolved Question: I REALLY Don't want to fail..But I think that i already have..what do i do NOW?
Well, Senior year started out pretty lame to begin with. Last semester I failed 2 classes: Algebra II and Statistics, and here's the thing: I was actually PASSING the class, but i missed the bus the day of the final, and ended up failing. So as soon as I came back to school I didn't know that i was failing, because Statistics was an easy class. So i asked my stats teacher if i could make up the final, and i ended up making it up. But before i took it, i asked some former classmates of mine from that class about the final, and they said that it was hard and that they had told the teacher that majority of the stuff on the final that they didn't recognize (we hadn't learned it, we spent months on one chapter) so he convinced everyone that he'd try to pass them as long as they did ok. When I had asked about my results from the final, he just told me that he'd take care of it, whatever that meant..He's really nice and a very good teacher - everyone goes to him for help. So I was pretty confident. Then theres algebra. OHH.....See, im not that good in mathematics, and neither is anyone in my family, so no one could help me, or would attempt otherwise. Well, I could tell that I was gonna get off to a terrible start because the teacher is MEAN, and i don't mean strict, i mean really disrespectful to the point where she pisses people off. She doesn't help anyone, if you ask her for help she'll just be like "you all need to learn to help yourselves".. She told everyone not to bother coming to her with help because she "doesn't feel like going over it again"..she wont stop and slow down for anyone, and most of the time we have to correct her because she gets herself confused, which when we do, she'll be like "what? you think im stupid? that i cant count or something? whats the matter with you?" She is really not a nice person. I do not get her methods of teaching: she wont assign us anything to do after we take "notes" (which consist of her spending the entire class period either figure out how to use the laptop or the calculator) yet she'll ask for homework, and when the entire class tells her that she didn't assign us anything, she'll give everyone zeros. Not to mention that she is OLD and is very...confused. Once, i walked into class early in the morning and i overheard her talking to another teacher about why she doesn't have the patience to do this job anymore and how she doesn't feel like teaching; well QUIT then, *****..you're old enough for social security anyway! But thats just how mad she makes everyone...she'll stop teaching just to start random arguments with people. WTHF. Well, the "geniuses" at school decided to put me in her class twice: for Algebra II AND Discrete Math..yessir..she now teaches 2 subjects. So Im thinking that im gonna try harder this semester, but apparently no matter how much I study and try, I still fail...BOTH classes. I mean, i was planning on making up the algebra II first semester in saturday school, but now im failing both Algebra II AND discrete maths...Algebra II grade: 44 Discrete Math: 59. And whats even worse is that discrete math is EASY, yet i don't know what im doing wrong, I even failed a test that i used my notes for..so im not sure whats going on..i just feel like im not graduating...Im probably gonna have to repeat the 12th grade, but I can't do that..Im already off track for starting high school in a different county with different class requirements and are now making up the ones i need for here, if i fail im not coming back to school. What do I do? My counselor doesn't do anything except rub in the fact that im failing!! Whats even more embarrassing is that im passing the rest of my classes with high A's and B's.... moreResolved Question: What are people doing to end world poverty?
Over 1.3 billion people live below the international poverty line (surviving on less than $1/day) and 1.6 billion people survive on between $1 and $2. 25 years ago, the average American made over 30% more than the average German, 40% more than the average Japanese, nearly 50% more than the average citizen of the UK, and 5,500% more than the average Ethiopian. I can only imagine what those statistics would look like today. The amount of money the United States spent on the Iraq war could have put the entire world's children through primary school. It could have ended world hunger. It could have made a positive difference in the lives of billions. But no... When the World Trade Organization (WTO) says they're trying to liberalize world trade and although it along with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) say that they "do a lot to alleviate poverty," why has world poverty increased since their creations? This is unacceptable. How can we stand by and let these greedy giants dominate the world and prevent third world countries from developing? The best answer hands done on my last question came from person number one, who has the statistics of our nations health care system. For the worst answer, the selfish people who live in our country and here, we take ANYONE and that causes even less care for my children. The state in which we come from, Missouri has a high risk pool, it is out of funds and there is a waiting list. For those Canadians who live here and plan to retire back to Canada, your not paying taxes to Canada and it only makes since, you would vote down any hike in taxes for us when you have a safe haven but that makes you a pretty miserable person. We are humans, not animals. Some very selfish only caring about themselves, others, like our President wanting to better this country. Some may say Canada has it right and America should follow suit. Instead of allowing everyone from all over no matter how sick or useless they are into our country. One asked what our family has to offer, my husband and I are both in health care! What sickens me are these cold heartless answers from some who are ripping our countries rewards but all to willing to deny the same treatment to those wanting to live in their place of birth. This country may be better off if we did the same and God forbid any of you ever have to be in the position we are in. Shame on those who are looking out for number one! Go see Extraordinary Measures and maybe then you'll get a glimpse into our life. Even then, we have three and employers find out fast who is putting a dent into their benefits and so were forced to job jump. and currently my husband is out of work. It always surprises me how caring some are and how cold others are. By the way our story is deep, our middle daughter was the first one sick and misdiagnosed at Mayo, we were told to bring another child into the world since her older brother didn't match, nobody knew that my oldest had it until after our youngest was born with it. Rare diseases are not easy to find out. We have a family web site and my own kids are told they should have been aborted. Then you have the far right screaming about abortion when they had eight years to change it, all the while kids like mine die everyday in hospitals across this country because they are poor, on Medicaid or the fight for insurance coverage took too long and they didn't make it. This is murder! This children are real, alive and have a chance but instead so many have no idea and those who do, turn their heads and are such hypocrites! Its all over the news, the facts are there. We are 39th in health care in the world, we spend more money allowing more people to die than France, Canada or any European developed country. We fall behind in live births the third world country Costa Rica who is 38th and Canada ranking at 30. France is ranked number one and they do it at half the cost. Health care is not a luxury but a right there and that is how all of them feel. For my kids, we look forward to death and a life of hell unless God alone can heal them and touch them. We have noway to better there lives as so many immigrants including my great grandfathers did. In fact, I can't even go back to where my true roots are. I am stuck watching my children and our family fade away without a country who cares. As a mother I will never give up trying and praying for if I did not have HOPE I would have nothing. Again, before you answer ask yourself what if it were I who had such a life? I hold nothing against any mother from third world countries who seek a better life for their children for I know their hearts, they are humans and I happen to care. For those who are bitter and angry, I feel sorry for. While our family has a hard road, we have love and compassion and we will look to Him for our answers. We may end up suffering here but we will do it with joy and not begrudge my sister or brother for doing what we want as well. Thank you for the kind answers and honest information. It looks as though we are stuck and for a free person, I feel very imprisoned. moreResolved Question: Do students at various universities differ in how sociable they are? If there is anything you would like to add to make this piece of writing improve. Please let me know! December 21, 2012 11:11PM--the end of the world--is just a few years away. Nearly every person in the 21st century has heard of this prediction and wondered whether or not if the world will actually end. Unfortunately, now is not the time to ponder the obvious fact that the end will come in 2012. Now you may ask, “How can you be sure this time its actually going to happen? I mean apocalyptic predictions like Y2k and 6/06/06 were false right”? Well, the answer is obvious; this time the world will definitely end because the Mayans predicted it! Not the Incas, Aztecs or hundreds of other civilizations around that time period, but the Mayans. Clearly the Mayans were able to see a special alignment of stars and planets with only their eyes and grass tubes for extra magnification. NASA must have falsified this prediction because they lack sufficient technology to make the correct sightings. In addition, believers of 2012 claim the Mayans succeeded in predicting civil conflicts within civilizations in thousand year margins. For example…the American Civil war and the Chinese Civil war and the Portuguese Civil war… the list goes on and on. Here we see solid proof, for only the Mayans were able to predict such rare internal conflicts in a civilization. I predict a rising percent of Americans suffering from heart attacks and an increase in carbon dioxide contamination in the air, but heck, I’m probably wrong without the rock calendars or chocolate currency that helped the Mayans. After all, my piece of evidence only relies on scientific statistics. I might have missed a couple of supporting of evidence, but hundreds of documentaries supporting my point and even a Hollywood movie should be able to answer your questions. If you survived underwear bombers, Y2k, 666, SARS, Bird flu, Swine flu and Mad Cow, your luck must run out sometime. This only leaves us one thing to do, which is to seize the last three years. First off, all you freshmen out there should all stop taking your classes. For those taking five Honors/AP classes for perfection, you only have about three more years to live, so why spend time developing critical reading skills for the SAT when the countdown to 2012 is already around a thousand days? President Obama, why waste time encouraging 2016 Olympics to be held in Chicago? Forget your promised duty to the American people. I doubt healthcare will save us from dieing to a combination of earthquake, tornados, tsunamis, and meteors. On the bright side, global warming might actually have no effect! Even though our ozone layer perhaps will be unable to block out dangerous UV rays and our air will be polluted with carbon dioxide in twenty or so years, we won’t have to worry at all with the world ending in three years. Recently, our nation faced a rippling fear of obesity among the young, well proven by statistics. By now, with the 2012 truth revealed, let them stuff themselves with Twinkies and Sunkist. An average heart attack only strikes when a person is at twenty or thirty years old, well after 2012. But do not worry! Maybe you will survive the epic apocalypse by simply ripping the lungs of a human and sacrificing it to Mayan god “Bukhil Bil.” Or maybe eating the heart of a tiger to make you become an all-powerful warrior! Since the Mayans practiced this tribute, who knows? Or perhaps you may try the modern approach? “Buy your 2012 survival guide today” Unfortunately in our generation, it is common for ridiculous hoaxes and wild superstitions to attract many followers. When these events do not pass with little attention or is refuted with solid evidence, believers often cause the fear and paranoia bar rises even higher than the “preposterous” level. With one visit to Yahoo Answers, you will be able to see hundreds of anxious people questioning the apparent “truth” of 2012. With such obsession, people will turn away from solving our nations biggest and legitimate problems, obesity and global warming, to some ludicrous doomsday date. Next time, when a wild prediction swings out of control, considered the evidence support it before you become dragged away from reality. Often times there is little, if not any, evidence that has to do with the topic. So turn down those ridiculous rumors, convince your friends, and be the ones who having fun on December 20, 2012, the ones who sit back and relax, laughing at those with credit card debts and unsold 2012 documentaries. moreVoting Question: Statistics Question Help!!!?

If there was a new boldness from the Supreme Court's conservative majority in last week's landmark ruling on campaign finance laws, there was also an underlying and familiar truth: When the Roberts court has broken with the past and shifted the court's jurisprudence, it has gone only so far as the place where Justice Anthony M. Kennedy already is comfortable. On the high-profile issues that draw public attention -- abortion rights, race, campaign finance -- Kennedy's dissents from the past provide a blueprint for today's majority opinions. These are a few problems that I'm having a hard time figuring out. These are all supposed to test my understanding on Chapter 9 of my textbook which has to do with Sampling Distributions. 7. The Gallup poll asked a probability sample of 1785 adults whether they attended church or synagogue during the past week. Suppose that 40% of the adult population did attend. We would like to know the probability that an SRS of size 1785 would come within plus or minus 3 percentage points of this true value. 8. A Study of college freshmen's study habits found that the time (in hours) that college freshmen use to study each week is approximately normally distributed with a mean of 7.2 hours and a standard deviation of 5.3 hours. a) What is the probability that a randomly chosen freshman studies more than twice the average number of hours? (Sketch required.) b) What is the probability that the average number of hours spent studying of an SRS of 55 students is greater than 14.4 hours? c) Would your answers to a and b be affected if the distribution of number of hours freshmen study were distinctly non-normal? Explain briefly. 12. A certain beverage company is suspected of under-filling its cans of soft drink. The company advertises that its cans contain, on the average, 12 ounces of soda with a standard deviation of 0.4 ounces. Compute the probability that a random sample of 50 cans produces a sample mean fill of 11.9 ounces or less. (A sketch of the distribution is required.) moreResolved Question: How much money does the United States spend on other countries?
I mean all the countries' relief efforts. Africa, Haiti, Iraq, etc. And China, because they pretty much own the US. I am doing this for a Math 2 statistics project. Basically we have to ask 30 people a question and then turn it into a report. I would greatly appreciate your answer! Thanks moreResolved Question: Java: What is ConcurrentModificationException?
I keep on receiving this error "ConcurrentModificationException: null (in java.util.AbstractList$Itr)" when I try to run my code, and the highlighted error is on my "for each" loop in my arraylist. You can find plenty of statistics online and from other sources regarding how many women will be victims of sex crimes during their lifetime. Most figures are disturbing: 17% of women will be victims of either rape or attempted rape during their lifetime. (Other estimates say that generally 1 in 6 women will be victims of rape or attempted rape.) 13% of women will actually be raped. Only around one-third (or less) of rapes are reported to police. Only 2% of rapists are ever convicted. Only one out of every twenty rapists will ever spend a day in jail (with or without being convicted). Yes, these numbers are disturbing. But I cannot find numbers online regarding what percentage of men will be sex offenders during their lifetime. I mean, if rape and attempted rape is so prevalent, who is committing these crimes? Are the offenses confined to a small portion of the male population that are chronic offenders? Or is it more likely that a larger percentage of men are sex offenders or rapists for only one or two instances during their lives, and thus making the percentage of men who are offenders as disturbingly high as the incidences of rape among women? If anyone has any sources that shed light on this question, please post them. Or just post your own opinion. moreVoting Question: What can I do with these subjects? Currently in year 12 AS Level.?
Hi everyone, I've taken Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Maths (Statistics is a part of it as well) and Critical Thinking. (All year 12's have to take critical thinking) Anyways, I have absolutely no idea what I want to do when I'm older and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice? At the moment, my favourite subjects are Biology and Psychology and I was thinking going into these two fields? Also, what jobs would I be able to go in? If it helps you make a list, I don't want to go into Medicine or become a doctor as I'd rather not sit in a room all day because the atmosphere in hospitals etc are just awful and I don't want to be surrounded by sick people. The time people take to complete a simple puzzle is modelled by the continuous random variable X which is uniformly distributed over 1 ≤ x ≤ 5 Given that john has already spent 3 minutes on the puzzle find the probability that john will complete the puzzle during the next minute. Now, i thought the probability would be P( next minute | 3 minutes ) = (1/4)/(3/4) = 1/3 But the answer's a half. Can someone explain please? Thanks in advance. more
