Open Question: How many Americans work in the electric industry?
I couldn't find any statistics on google, but it would be very useful for an upcoming project I have. I could also use the same statistics on the communications industry. moreResolved Question: Was Vinny right???????????????
He said: "JOSH I'm challenging you right now in front of everyone on the internet reading your post to PROVE where the economy is recovering, not only providing jobs but providing a visible growth rate youre claiming is opening up hiring to Americans. "Start by listing the exact specific names of the exacts specific large scale mass-hiring corporations that are directly benefiting from the 'recovery' youre claiming is currently taking place in the US." I say -- or rather, the BBC says: Data released on Thursday has shown that the US economy is continuing to grow, with both factory output and the services sector still expanding. "US factory orders increased 1.2% in April, said the Commerce Department, led by a big rise in orders for commercial aircraft. "The Institute of Supply Management said service industries grew in May for the fifth month in a row." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/10233442.stm And that's as far as I, or any sane man, would go. One could mention Boeing, but anecdotal evidence has no economic significance: that Boeing has been hiring does not mean that other companies haven't been laying off. The statistics are what count here; even in a boom some individual companies do poorly, just as in the deepest bust some do well. moreResolved Question: Do we comprehend the disasters of the moment???????????
...the nurding home fire, the river in flood pouring over the sandbag levee, the airplane crash with fragments of burnt bodies scattered among the hunks of twisted metal, the grenade in the marketplace, the sinking ship. But how to grasp a thing that does not kill you today or tomorrow but slowly from the inside in twenty years. How to feel that a corporate or governmental choice means we bear twisted genes and our grandchildren will be stillborn if our children are very lucky. Slow death can not be photographed for the six oclock news. Its all statistical, the gross national product or the prime lending rate. Yet if our eyes saw in the right spectrum, how it would shine, lurid as magenta neon. If we could smell radiation like seeping gas, if we could sense it as heat, if we could hear it as a low ominous roar of the earth shifting, then we would not sit and be poisoned while industry spokesmen talk of acceptable millirems and ~O2 cancer per population thousand. We acquiesce at murder so long as it is slow, murder from asbestos dust, from tobacco, from lead in the water, from sulphur in the air, and fourteen years later statistics are printed on the rise in leukemia among children. We never see their faces. They never stand, those poisoned children together in a courtyard, and are gunned down by men in three-piece suits. The shipyard workers who built nuclear submarines, the soldiers who were marched into the Nevada desert to be tested by the H- bomb, the people who work in power plants, they die quietly years after in hospital wards- and not on the evening news. The soft spring rain floats down and the air is perfumed with pine and earth. Seedlings drink it in, robins sip it in puddles, you run in it and feel clean and strong, the spring rain blowing from the irradiated cloud Over the power plant. Radiation is oppression, the daily average kind, the kind youre almost used to and live with as the years abrade you, high blood pressure, ulcers, cramps, migraine, a hacking cough you take it inside and it becomes pain and you say, not They are killing me but I am sick now. Vegetarian propaganda focuses on land-use productivity statistics extrapolated from arable farming (grain production) and the feeding of (the same) grains to grazing animals - how might this constitute serious context-drops? So often vegetarians fondly repeat (and repeat again) how arable farming produces more food and how wasteful and unproductive it is to produce meat from the same sized area of land and so on and so on... But, based on the methods used to produce such figures (see above/below) do these (virtually) uncritically accepted assumptions have any valid context in Reality? What relevance might this have? Points to consider: Do grazing animals naturally eat grains? Do humans naturally eat grains? (Ok brain now's your chance: can humans really digest raw grains very well/at all?). Can any system basing its models on the use of irrational (and unacceptable) farming practise have any credibility or meaningful value for changing/implementing policy? Has such a serious lack of objective honesty and context demonstrated the same level of manipulation as (for instance) testing a (competing model of) petrol car's performance (but on the important test day deciding to use diesel) and coming up with far reaching conclusions that the car is rubbish. What happens to land-yield models when bringing the calculations back to Reality (ie, when comparing such models when grazing animals get fed their natural diet)? Why have you fallen for this propaganda? What else might need an injection of critical thinking? (Other widely accepted notions of environmental/vegetarian dogma for instance? For instance, monocrops don't happen in isolation or get maintained all by themselves do they?)(This is also not an invitation to get confused* either about developing countries engaging in (my own opinion) totally unacceptable and criminal violation of rainforest land etc - this represents a completely separate and gravely serious issue - keep everything in context please). Also see: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2002/Mar02/vegan.htm (and on Yahoo! And grass grows back. PPS: *It is completely irrelevant what the meat industry does in general - in context of your own individual dietary choices. It does not not matter (personally) what the meat industry does. Only personal application matters. I eat meat and animal fats everyday - loads of it. None of the meat/dairy I eat comes from farms engaging in the unacceptable practises of feeding grains to grazing animals, or destroying rainforest land (for short lived cattle pasture/monocrops of soya etc), or artificially intensifying production (to the animals detriment), or blanket use of antibiotics (why do you think grain fed grazing animals typically require such treatments anyway? What happens when looking after grazing animals properly, allowing a natural diet? Or even this nonsense about cow-methane? Come on, join the dots), or forcing them to listen to heavy rock music constantly, or anything that rationally could get considered an animal welfare abuse. Animal farming is not the problem. Demonising meat (or animal fats) is not the solution. Cutting your nose off to spite your brain is just funny and not recommended. moreVoting Question: How many billions could be saved by legalizing drugs, Dutch politicians know?
Ending drug prohibition: the ultimate austerity measure Published: 19 May 2010 14:07 | Changed: 19 May 2010 16:52 The ban on recreational drugs promotes crime and is bad for public health. By Frits Bolkestein c.s. * Archive - Tourists no longer welcome in cannabis-selling coffee shops * Archive - Dutch message to drug tourists: c'est fini * News - European court weighs cannabis ban for foreigners Austerity measures to cut public spending are a hot topic for debate everywhere in Europe. In the Netherlands, where a new parliament will be elected next month, several proposals to reduce spending by 30 billion euros are on the table. All of these proposals hit where it hurts, but one option could actually be a welcome relief: drug regulation. By 'regulation', we mean: permitting the production and sale of drugs under strict conditions designed to minimise use, while making it as safe as possible. Regulation, however, remains a colossal taboo, even in the Netherlands. And in spite of the Dutch cabinet's pledge that no subject would be taboo in its review of potential austerity measures, a government committee charged with studying possible cutbacks in the security sphere has barely dared broach the subject. It has only considered further regulating the less harmful drugs, marijuana and hashish, which could – under certain assumptions - save 183 million euros now spent on law enforcement and other government efforts, and generate 260 million in taxes. The committee said nothing of other drugs. Recreational drugs were made illegal in the Netherlands 40 years ago. But they are used more frequently than ever, and there are no indications whatsoever that prohibition is effective. It is absolutely certain, though, that prohibition is causing extensive damage, the extent of which has barely registered with the public. At least half of all crime in this country is caused by drugs, either directly or indirectly. Recent data from the Dutch justice department show that 27 to 33 percent of all years spent in incarceration are the result of violations of the law banning recreational drugs. In 2006, three quarters of the more than 300 investigations of organised crime focused on the production of, or trade in, drugs. These statistics are limited to direct violations of Dutch drug laws and pertain to dealers and drug runners, frequent offenders, the cultivation of marijuana in homes and sheds, drug mules, ecstasy labs and export and import. Indirect crimes come on top of that: bribery, threats, corruption, money laundering and the subsequent tainting of legitimate industries like real estate, retaliatory violence between drug gangs, the use of drug money to finance the illegal arms trade. And let's not even begin to mention the international consequences, which include the disruption of entire countries. These facts, unheard of in both senses of the word, are absent in the drug debate, as they are, just as surprisingly, in the security debate. Everyone worried about security would do well to consider an alternative to the current ban on recreational drugs. Amazingly enough, though, prohibition's biggest proponents are avid crime fighters. Can't they see they are effectively serving as key support to the drug mob? Could things be better? Certainly, and that is a proven fact. The 30-year Dutch experiment of selling marijuana in so-called coffee shops is unique. Regulation of this drug has not lead to increased use of marijuana or other drugs. The use of, and addiction to, all types of recreational drugs in the Netherlands lie near or below the European average, and far below the levels common in repressive countries like France, England or the US. Coffee shops have also ensured that hundreds of thousands of cannabis consumers have never acquired criminal records, or seen their driver's licenses revoked, as is common practice elsewhere. This proves prohibition is unnecessary. We can do without this unusual measure introduced to protect citizens against themselves – quite the anomaly in criminal law. Regulation works. Drug crime can be prevented. Any problems caused by regulation pale in comparison to the advantages this incredible breakthrough would offer. Take coffee shops, for instance, which have caused trouble in Dutch border areas. The city of Venlo has effectively solved these problems by moving some coffee shops to the outskirts of town, close to the German border. To draw coffee shops out of the criminal sphere entirely, the cultivation of marijuana needs to be regulated. Dutch municipalities can't wait to do so. The Dutch parliament has twice accepted a motion along these lines. As far as other drugs are concerned, pilot regulation projects need to be set up, carefully but resolutely, for cocaine, XTC, amphetamines and heroine in particular. Proposals to that extent have already been drafted. Are international drug treaties an obstacl moreResolved Question: Can someone point me in the right direction?

My article is about game cultures, this article talks about how the cultural forces active in game production from three aspects: the economic system, the system of technology and the system of culture. First of all, it gives some examples to show us the trend for computer games and PlayStation's development. For example, Sony are major operators in the music and film business, but they are also produce PlayStation for many years. The Sony PSX enables the user to play PS2 games, record TV, copy audio, watch DVDs and connect online. Beside Sony, Microsoft produce digital product as well. This article indicates that, Bill Gates and his work teams produced Xbox because Microsoft were very threatened by Sony dominance of the domestic digital domain, and computer games business is a powerful revenue generator within the global media and entertainment industries. Recent technology releases have intensified the drive towards game platforms converging with other forms of media use. Kutaragi the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment predicted of the PS3: “The next-generation PlayStation will probably take the form of a game box, though it will not be a mere game machine.” In early 2004 Microsoft released the Xbox Music mixer designed to expand the Xbox capabilities from DVD, online connectivity, and audio to karaoke performance. There was a competition between Microsoft and Sony to produce their next consoles. Microsoft have spent millions of dollars to get the Xbox 360 to market before the PS3. This article also gives a statistics to show us that the games we get are generated by a highly sophisticated, highly capitalized media industry. When you buy a new console game, about 35% of the cover price of a console game goes back to the publisher and developer;as much as 30% stays with the retailer, 10% to the wholesaler and a further 10% on marketing, a final unique 15% on each disc is paid as a royalty to the platform manufacturer, like Sony or Microsoft. The 35% that returns to game publishers and producers there is both a cost and profit component, split roughly 50/50. Because of the longer established and more economically successful than any other digital media sector, more and more Media Studies scholars attend to the games industry. This article talks about the economic system of game production from three parts, the developers, the publishers and the technologists. First of all, It describes the developers’ working environment: an open plan office, filled with young men hooked up to computers, many of them wearing headphones, an air of quiet concentration is broken by the occasional whoop of success. The phone almost never rings; communication is by text or email. Lunch is either sandwiches or cheese toasts. They don’t need to dress up. Their working environment seems more relaxed than any other creative media environment. This might look like it is only a description of a culture; but this culture is a function of economics. Because of such a working environment is in fact a highly systematized form of a new kind of global media enterprise. Thousands of legal immigrants, who do not permanently reside in the United States but give birth here, have given their children the gift of citizenship, which the U.S. grants to anyone born on its soil. The number of U.S. births to non-resident mothers rose 53 percent between 2000 and 2006, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Total births rose 5 percent in the same period. Among the foreigners who have given birth here, including international travelers passing through and foreign students studying at U.S. universities, are "birth tourists," women who travel to the United States with the explicit purpose of obtaining citizenship for their child. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/birth-tourism-industry-markets-us-citizenship-abroad/story?id=10359956 moreResolved Question: Why do people continue to adopt children from countries that are not part of the Hague Convention?
I understand the humanitarian aspect of helping kids in need, but, how much help is it to support an industry that is most likely exploiting children who may not even be orphans? It seems that these countries are among the most common countries to be adopted from by the USA(i.e. Russia, South Korea, etc.) It seems selfish to me. I can rationalize that people are not adopting from these countries for selfish reasons. The only sense I can make of it is that they don't know that these countries are not part of Hague, or don't even know what Hague is. But, to me it seems if someone were to make such a big decision and put themselves in a position where all they can do is trust strangers half way across the world for however long it takes until the adoption is finalized, they would do extensive research. Does that make sense? Another logic that I've heard is that if they don't adopt these children, the kids won't get adopted. But, I've heard that a lot of countries that have made industries out of adoption make it difficult for local families to adopt the kids in hopes that foreigners(i.e. Americans) will pay big bucks for these kids. Also, the US has an astonishing rate of children entering our system, while the rate of adoptions is dropping for American kids. Our statistics are far more severe than most any of the countries that people adopt from, but there seems to be an overwhelming number of people adopting internationally. I don't know. It just doesn't make sense to me. Any thoughts? If you've adopted internationally, please explain to me your reasoning, your thoughts on Hague, the country you chose and why...I realize that I am being a bit frank, I hope that I'm not offending anyone. It's not that I'm against international adoption or anything like that. I'm just trying to grab a new perspective. I, mean, there are thousands of families who do this every year, so I must be missing something, right? I am simply asking for the likely motivation behind the action...that's all...kims- I understand what you're saying. But, the US is a part of Hague and has been since 1994, just one year after Hague began. I agree with most everything that you all have said and have thought the same things! So, I guess I'm not the only one that is disgusted with the way adoption has become a big business. I don't remember the name of who said this, but I do realize that Hague isn't a guarantee on anything, but it is at least a step in the right direction. I think it is very easy for people looking to adopt to become so emotionally entangled in the process and idea of adopting(especially with all the difficulties and waiting period, etc.) that they may do things that otherwise would be out of character for them. moreVoting Question: Where do I get financial statistics about fast food industry?

Why does it seem that there is a mental illness for everything? Fundamentally due to the nature of statistics, there will be people that are abnormal to others. However, from the statistics I have looked at, most (98% of people that voluntarily enter a mental hospital will come out with a diagnosis either of a mild mental illness) and then prescribed a drug. I myself have been prescribed Risperdal for Asperger's Syndrome which I believe is damright stupid. There is also a major mismatch between individualism and psychiatry. I recently started to enjoy the EMO concept and this seemed to be misinterpreted as depression... The fact was I was getting much enjoyment from it, however, those around me thought I was too into it... This was the reason why I decided to voluntarily admit myself because my family thought I was going crazy... The problem was I could stop whenever I wanted. I'm not sure why they tried to give me anti-depressants... Is it just me or is something fishy going on? Anyway, the nurses told me to allow them to prescribe whatever so they could make money and that I didn't have to take any of it... So therefore my private health insurance is now empty and I haven't taken any pills... I thought this was bullshit, however, the more I read about it online. The more I am convinced that there should be safeguards such as paying psychiatrists minimum wage only. This likewise should also be extended to the finance industry.Well the nurse was actually really nice and actually told them I had taken the medication when in fact I hadn't. Clearly, she had my best interests at hand because I had been with her for many hours compared to the 15-30 minutes with the psychiatrist... She understood me... The psychiatrists either due to their lack of time didn't seem to understand my situation. Why are they so busy and why do they make such rash judgments?Who knows...Maybe, statistically I just had bad luck. However, there are so many cases of neglect in the mental health system that it's a joke. You only see your psychiatrist maybe for like 10 minutes a day and then they leave you alone. The lack of a proper lengthy diagnosis really makes you question if they are doing something wrong. I had to write several essays detailing why I was feeling the way I was. Only after this time did they let me go... It's like they don't have time to listen. They would rather wait for me to write a 10 page essay for them.If they have the time to read my essays.... Why couldn't they just talk for longer???????? As you can see it defies common sense, maybe psychiatrists should take a course in common sense... Time is not an excuse because they ended up reading my 10 page essays anyway... Maybe they don't like talking? Maybe they don't like communication? Who knows... Seriously it's so messed up.Yeah. LOL! I guess when you consider it from the viewpoint of an outsider looking in at me. I have to admit in this context; I was quite weird. I was writing this supposed "Dark Poetry". This comes with the genre and people actually applaud you for your comments on life... However, at no point was I cutting myself...I probably have Asperger's Syndrome to some extent. However, most people still state it is a myth and that it is normal behaviour in those that have not yet developed "specialised social skills". The EMO genre just fit in with my lack of friends. In fact it helped me generate more friends... So go figure. It cured my Asperger's Syndrome you might say. Seriously, I don't think it's even right... moreResolved Question: What does Her Majesty's Government intend to do about the imminent banana shortage due to closed air space?
Millions of people like a banana. Soon they are going to have to face the dissapointment of having run out. This is because the volcanic ash in our airspace means planes cannot import fresh fruit from countries that are lucky to be hot enough to grow bananas. This is a serious situation (backed up by statistics which show the banana is the UK's favourite fruit). In all the talk of people stranded abroad, there has been no mention of this issue. To be fair, only about 150,000 Bristish people are stranded. Politicians, aviation authorities, and travel industry bosses are working round the clock to think how to get those people home. Look at the numbers: 150,000 versus... the Millions of people who like a banana. What I am saying is rather than send a Royal Navy vessel to Spain to collect folk, why doesn't the government send it to the Windward Isles or Costa Rica to get some bananas. This would be completely in line with important government policies such as "5-a-day". I also think the politicians need to remember that there is an election coming up. Who is fighting for the cause on this important issue? Who has mentioned it? No one!! And yet, when I look around the staff room at my work, nearly everyone has a banana. The Arkansas Attorney General's Office recommends you report your experience with advanced fee loan companies to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and PhoneBusters. PhoneBusters is the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Center. The call center plays a vital role in the collection and dissemination of victim evidence, statistics, and documentation which are made available to outside law enforcement agencies. Cancer seems to sprout on a people who have no family history & more and more kids (by statistics; Faulty to bias) seem to experience asthmatic problems (most ONLY early on in their life; Childhood). Let us now do the math: if a person smokes 1-3 cigarettes a day for...20 years, he will more than likely NOT develop any other kind of physical health problem other than slight breathing problems, phlem build up combined with that Hoarse-voice and foul smelling clothes and/or yellow teeth. However, if a person smokes 1 to 3 Packs a day for 20 years, he has a very high chance of needing a stoma, definite health problems (needing a respirator), as well as weaker bones and any of the nasty diseases you hear about associated with [chain] smokers. Now let us compare those facts with a person being exposed to 2nd hand smoke: being around someone/group that smokes for a short time (1 hour) equals out to about the same as the person who smokes 1-3 cigarettes a day...how dangerous do 'they' say that is again? To add to the FEAR, 'they' are now talking about 3rd hand smoke (which I personally believe is a disgusting joke). It basically states that any environment a smoker has buffed 2nd hand smoke upon will retain the same potency as that of a Chain Smoker over countless years...you will develop cancer just from touching a section of a wall (for example). The idea is sickly rediculous. The reason people seem to pop up with cancer and kids with asthma problems is not from the smoking community but rather what the average american keeps putting in their stomachs like a glutton. It is all the hormones they put in the animals and products we consume that are the REAL Culprit yet everyone is focused on the smokers...ever heard of Sleight of Hand? I stand nuetral on the matter since I know what the Tabacco companies put in the cigarettes (why hasn't the government put a stop to that and santion it to be natural once again?) and I also know what 'facts' the Anti-Smoking campaigns are twisting just to sell THEIR PRODUCTS (nicotine gum, and various other alt. to smoking products). Why aren't people focused on WHAT the tabacco industry puts in the cigarettes to begin with...it might cut back on some of the toxins both, inhaled and exhaled...and start forcing the Anti-smoking industries to stop lying about the facts in hopes of scaring people into using their products instead. Also, why are people not widely complaining and running a anit-hormone campaign against the food industries that are responsible for the physical health decline of years of consumption of their products (science experiments)? Afterall, these are the real criminals getting away with murder. Its not child support Wishnuwelltoo: that is state ordered money owed to the child of their blood. It has nothing to do with the state budget. However the money owed in back pay with interest is and gets garnished with income tax. The real problem is the extensive (everyone including non-citizens) and over-use (staying on it for more than 3 years) of Welfare and government aid and pile that up with all the embezzlement and laundering going on within the government (politicians). Kids will be kids and be fine...the testimony is that in our past generations: our grandparents and parents grew-up in a time where smoking was allowed in hospitals and wasnt a big issue. Do they have health problems like today? We came out fine too...so ask yourself what changed? No matter how you slice it, it all comes down to the crap they put in our foods...put these bastards in prison where they belong.Khrag: It sounds more like you are waaaay to bias on the side of the non-smoking campaign. You sure your not just eating up all the "twisted truths" piled up from the medical departments. Yes you are right about how there is a lot of money in the tabacco business (who doesn't know that obvious one) but there are also billions in the anti-tabacco and quitting tabacco business as well. Ever see that commercial with the gerbal that seems to constantly go for a drink of the "nicotine water?" They edited it to make it seem like it couldn't control its "CONSTANT" drinking dendancies LOL come on! How can an educated person or someone with common sense say that being around 2nd hand smoke for a short period even every day will contribute to SERIOUS health issues later. Perhaps they are only focusing on those that have the unfortunate gift of having genes that are vulnerable to such things and leave out those that do not for their "Statistics." The costs of information security attacks keep escalating… If we use the statistics on the textbook as a baseline: $80 million in 2004 and 800K exposed records in 2005. These numbers are dwarfed by the cost and the number of incidents in 2008 and 2009 where we are seeing 285 million exposed records per year at a cost into the billions of dollars. There are so many computer programs where you look in help and the instructions assume you already know a lot you might not. The internet does the same thing. Why? Why can't these things have step by step instructions. Why do all these computer programs assume the user knows everything? It's like the computer industry just doesn't care. Why haven't competitors emerged that do care? Why aren't market forces forcing them to actually give a damn about their customers? All I was trying to do was find out how to run ANOVA on a statistics program. Its been 15 minutes already. I checked help and it's no help. I look online and I still can't find anything. It's the PASW program BTW. Why isn't some smart person out there putting these idiots out of business? But there are even cases where it is hard because it is too wordy. Or for example I try searching help on the stats program and it gives me a bunch of equations for figuring out statistics and I have to look through everything forever just to find the part where they tell you what buttons to click. I don't care how it works, I really just want to know what to click. These people don't consider that people are in a hurry. People have things to do and want to know these things as fast as possible. Extra information not needed.Another thing is where clicking something on the program automatically minimizes "help". Why? I doubt it would cost more to design a program where they can both be up at once. Government Workers Make 45% More Than Private Sector Employees ChrisBanescu.com | by Chris Banescu | Feb. 9, 2010 Job_Losses_2010-01_lg A new report from the Bureaus of Labor Statistics that was released today, shows that almost 15 million Americans are currently out of work and unable to find jobs. Worse still, those with jobs have not seen their wages increase much in the last 10 years. However, government workers are enjoying a boom in hiring and generous salary increases thanks in large part to very cushy pensions and other benefits. The pay differential between public sector employees and the private sector shows a troubling trend. Government workers have benefited greatly, even during the severe recession, and their wages now outpace the employee compensation in private industry. According to recent research done by Mark J. Continental matches Delta baggage fee increase CNN) -- Continental Airlines has matched Delta Air Lines' recent checked-luggage fee increase, a Continental spokeswoman says. Delta and Continental passengers paying online for checked bags will be charged $23 for the first bag and $32 for the second. Delta's online fees are rising by $8 for the first checked bag and $7 for the second. Continental's fees are rising by $5 for each bag. The new Delta rates start Tuesday and apply to tickets purchased on or after January 5. Passengers who bought tickets before that date will pay the old rates, Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said. Continental matched Delta's updated fees late last week, spokeswoman Mary Clark said. The increase on Continental applies to passengers who purchased tickets on or after January 9 for travel on or after January 16. Those checking in bags at the airport will shell out even more: $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second on both airlines. Some passengers -- such as first-class fliers, some frequent fliers and military personnel on deployment -- are exempt from most checked-luggage fees. Delta and Continental luggage fees now are among the highest in the industry. US Airways also charges $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for the second bag when checked in at the airport. Online, the airline charges $20 and $30 for the first and second bags. United Airlines charges $20 for the first checked bag and $30 for the second bag at the airport, and $15 and $25 online for the first and second bags, respectively. American Airlines charges $20 for the first checked bag and $30 for the second bag, both online and at the airport. Most major air carriers started adding checked-bag fees in 2008. The airlines reported collecting nearly $740 million in baggage fees in the third quarter of 2009, according to U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. On discount carrier Southwest Airlines, the first and second checked bags are free. JetBlue offers a free first checked bag and charges $30 for the second. moreResolved Question: Which is cheaper? Organic or inorganic fertilizer?

So I was trying to look for statistics that match the information I had received from here, and almost every website I go to is telling me that organic fertilizers are cheaper than inorganic; in fact, one website claimed that organic is up to 66% less expensive than inorganic. My distant cousins in African live in abject poverty, are surrounded by political corruption and exist in a perennial state of health crisis due to AIDS and other endemic diseases. Yet here am I — as black as they — enjoying the comfort of my modest American home, the owner of two automobiles, and access to the most advanced health care system ever known. Why the difference? It can be summed in simple observation: My African kin are the living legacy of our African heritage. I, on the other hand, am the beneficiary of Western European culture. Granted, that observation smacks of racial betrayal. But it is also a matter of reality. White people, once free from the medieval madness of feudalism, applied themselves to industry and, having learned to bridal social injustice, blessed their cultures – and the rest of the world – with standards of living that would have been the envy of the greatest emperors of antiquity. It was a matter of fate that my ancestors were snatched from their African village by slave traders. Am I glad they suffered the pain and indignities of slavery? Of course not. But I am fortunate. And I am grateful that they got on that boat! There are some who call me a fool for ignoring the lingering injustice that our African American community endures. For every dollar earned by white families, they say, we earn 62 cents. Indeed, statistics are cold calculators that cannot be ignored. $31,969 was the medium income for black families in 2008. White families earned more — much more — $50,673! Families living in Africa, however earned a mere $315. I ask my black American friends: Where would you rather be? In America earning 62 percent compared to white Americans? Or in Africa, earning 1 percent compared to black Americans? Do you not understand that our African cousins would need to work 100 years to earn what we earn in one year? And do I dare mention the Reverend Jeremiah Wright? Shall I mention that, after a career of denouncing our white countrymen, Rev. Wright retired in a white community in a $1.6 million home? Did you know that the annual wages of 5,000 Africans would hardly cover the cost? No, I am not betraying my race; I am stating my case. The descendants of American slaves are the blessed beneficiaries of Western culture. White people gave us flight, electricity and computers. It was their culture that reached the moon, discovered and unraveled the mysteries of DNA, and probed the depths of human anatomy. They attached contraptions on their buggies and, a generation later, drove the world along Interstate highways. They replaced famine with food so abundant that obesity has become our great health concern. They connected us with terminals for traveling through air at 500 miles per hour and terminals for traveling through cyberspace at the speed of light. We gave them the Motown sound. They gave us the technology to allow that sound to be recorded and heard around the world. Lecture me on the evils of the white devils if you will. And, for the most part, I will agree. But I will do so here, in America, not Africa. And I will remind you that in America white people elect black leaders. In Africa black people depose white leaders. And for that, their cultures suffer. How foolish we are in own blind racist rage to destroy the western culture that enriches every aspect of our lives. How foolish to amuses ourselves with grand delusions when, in reality, we are merely regressing to the pathetic lives of our ancient culture. Western culture is rapidly eroding. When it is gone, where will we go? Back to Africa? Back to bathing our babies in cow urine? Back to subsistence living in grass huts? Back to the witch doctors and grotesque lip plates? Back to the bloated bellies of emaciated children? Back to tribal wars and brutal chieftains? Back to ignorance and high mortality? Do we really want to go back to that Africa? Yes, I am grateful my ancestors got on that boat. And you should be grateful, too — while it lasts. moreResolved Question: i need help with some chemistry homework - 7.03 The Chemical Basis of Industry?

Here is an article that I found on line that tells you if you should trust online articles or not. ARTICLE: When it comes to the internet, you know that there’s a lot of misleading, inaccurate or downright false information out there. By now, most of you have heard the advice, “Don’t trust everything you read.” But how can you tell what to trust and what not to? Here are some questions that you should get into the habit of asking whilst you’re reading anything (not just online): whether it’s a blog post, newspaper article, sales letter or brochure. What’s the Author’s Purpose? The most important question to ask, and one you should have in mind when you start to read, is “What’s the author’s purpose?” All writing has a purpose. It might be to: Entertain you – make you laugh Give you information Sell you something Encourage you to come back to a blog or magazine in future Build up the author’s reputation in his/her field Some purposes are inherently more trustworthy than others. For example, if the author is trying to give you information, or build her reputation, then the facts in the article are likely to be ones that the author at least believes are true. But if the author is trying to sell something, then read with caution. Who Is the Author? Even if the author’s purpose seems laudable, you’ll want to ask yourself who the author actually is. Have you ever heard of him? If so, is he an authority in his industry or field – or is he a suspected charlatan? For example, imagine an article entitled “How to Become a Lifecoach”. You should trust this if it was written by Tim Brownson, a qualified and practising lifecoach, who has an entertaining and informative blog. But if I had written the article, you definitely should take what I’ve written with a grain of salt. I’m a writer, not a coach, and I’ve never so much as read the “Dummy’s Guide to Lifecoaching”. Of course, as a professional writer, I sometimes do write on topics I don’t know much about. When I do this, I need to undertake a lot of research. So if you’re reading an article by an unknown writer, it’s especially important to ask the next couple of questions. Are Sources Cited? Does the author give you facts – especially statistics – without any evidence to back them up? In an entertaining piece, this might be fine (it doesn’t matter too much whether the numbers are right, so long as the article is funny). But if you’re reading an informative piece about the economy, and the author says, “Ten million people will be out of work by Christmas” – does she link to a particular source that backs this up? And just because you’ve heard a fact before doesn’t mean you should take it at face value. Have you ever read about the Harvard Goal Setting study? It’s an oft-cited example of why you should set written goals, which is usually referenced as first appearing in the book What They Don’t Teach You in the Harvard Business School, by Mark McCormack. This is how it goes (taken from Harvard Business School Story): In that year [1979], the students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?" Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all. Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the findings, while somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing. The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together. But a couple of weeks ago, I read Fact or Fiction? The Truth About The Harvard Written Goal Study on SidSavara.com. It was an eye-opener. Sid looked for the original study online, and found no evidence that the study ever existed, despite it being cited in numerous books and all over the web. There’s a very similar story about a Yale study in 1953 – which again, can’t be backed up. So just because a book is cited, don’t assume that the information in the book is necessarily accurate. Are Examples Included? Does the author write very abstract, high-level information, without any concrete details? The article might still be true but it’s not likely to be very useful to you. The most trustworthy articles won’t just include general principles or woolly statements, but will give examples too. And the best examples include specific figures or facts, or quotes from people who aren’t the author and who don’t have a vested interest. What do you trust more, “You could make loads as an online copywriter” or an article including several stories from different copywriters who are making over $50,000 a year? Does the Article Contradict Your Prior Knowledge? Finally, ask yourself whether the fFinally, ask yourself whether the facts in an article go against what you already know. If you read a sales letter for a new diet pill that claims you can “lose 20 lbs in a month”, you’ve got good reasons to be sceptical. Most people on a diet lose 1-2 lbs per week, and most diet pills are known to be notoriously ineffective and even dangerous (one, Acomplia, has recently been banned in the UK and was never approved for use in the US, due to its association with psychiatric problems). Any statements which seem “too good to be true” also fall into this category. You may not have prior knowledge of the exact area that the article is about, but you do know that most people don’t “make $$$ working from home” (or they’d all be doing it!) How do you figure out what to trust and what to ignore when you’re reading online – or when you’re reading books and newspapers? Which of the above tips do you think would help you most – or which would you like to add to the list? moreResolved Question: What to study after graduating? Please help!?

On the job front he seems to be doing well as far as dealing with dealers is concerned with whom one has to converse in Hindi or Telugu. But he has not been successful with direct industrial sales.
