Open Question: OCD question, kinda long but please read do u think this was a sign?

I obsess over diseases. My full-on obsessions are usually triggered by something I hear on TV or the radio, something I hear in passing, and many times by things I see on signs and billboards. For instance, if there is a poster advertising something associated with a certain disease, I will frantically obsess over that disease, google it for hours and weeks, and no one or nothing can convince me I am not going to get it. There is a rational side of me, maybe like 40% of me knows I am being irrational, but the other 60% is so strong and completely disperses and overpowers the sane part of me. It's almost like outside forces are intruding into my brain and repeating things over and over..."you have this, you are probably going to get this, and the only way to not get it is to do x, y, and z" I am not conjuring these thoughts up on my own. Somehow I'm convinced that by repeating certain words in my head and tapping things a certain number of times and many other little rituals will cancel out the thought and prevent it from happening. It's even gotten to the point where if I don't tap something 5 or 7 times I fear something bad will happen to someone in my family. Also if I'm reading a book/magazine/something online, the last word I read cannot be something negative, like "bad," if it is I have to go back and make sure the last thing I read is something uplifting and happy. Also, I don't think I have pressed the back arrow button on my CD player in years. If i want to listen to something previous, I keep going forward until it starts again. And no way will I listen to numbers 6 or 13, so I always make sure I put bad songs in those places. I ride the subway a lot and when I have to hold the bar I'm convinced I caught i disease...basically any time I touch anything that hasn't been cleaned by a team of clean experts I must wash my hands vigorously. No way will I touch food or my mouth until I do so. Anyway it has become increasingly debilitating. I have been tested for certain diseases so many times that they know me by name and insinuate they don't want me back again. Somehow I can't stop worrying that something terrible would happen, and no amount of rationality can stop it. I won't even get into the specifics because I fear it makes it more real, and my biggest fear is any of these things materializing. My obsession of the week is a particular injury on a certain part of the body, and last night I was watching a TV show and they spoke of that injury...also when I woke up this morning someone was blasting the TV and the first thing I heard when I woke up was something on the news about a similiar injury...also there was a commercial for something else I was obsessing about...my question is, do you think this is a sign that this is going to happen????? I was so upset when I woke up and heard it on the TV, i started crying. I need someone objective to tell me what they think?? Any help would be appreciated so much!!!!!thanks to everyone who answered, i will try keeping a diary and going to counseling as suggested...i really appreciate you all taking the time to read this and respond with your insight...and to ladyluck best of luck to you more

Voting Question: Aren’t you glad you’re not a famous rich actor/actress, going to the Oscars, because you’ve been nominated?

Especially women…they have to wear very tight and uncomfortable designer dresses in which they can barely walk, breathe or sit down. Add the high heels to that. I’d like to see how they handle peeing in public toilets in those. They usually don’t even own the dress, it was lent to them because they’re walking advertising but they have to name the designer in any interview. Any journalist on the red carpet will ask “what are you wearing?” It’s not like anybody care but it’s a requirement. The famous actress gets to wear the dress that she does not have to buy…but she has to say the designer’s name. The journalist will have to ask the question about the designer, so the actress can say the name of the designer, otherwise she would not answer any questions from the journalist and just waive and move on. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Then they have to wear those heavy, “this is the price of a house” cold stones around their neck and pulling down on their ear lobes. They don’t even own those jewels; it was lent to them because they’re walking advertising (then the jeweler has to go to court when celebrities’ personal assistant “forget” to return the borrowed jewels, ha-ha). They have to do all that while smiling a fake smile with fake white teeth, and looking a little too happy while wondering why oh why do I subject myself to this? Having money but wearing things I don’t even own…then, they remember…they got into this business for fame, fortune and adulation…none of those are easy. Then everybody will notice that they either lost too much weight or gained too much weight. Then whatever they look like, some people will criticize their fashion sense, in magazines, trash papers, online… Men will be judged by their arm candies. If she’s an unknown, sexy and half his age…then he’s a loser and she’s a gold digger. If she’s not sexy, even nice and classy, and she’s as old as him, because she’s his soul mate, then people will think “gosh, he could do better than that!” more

Resolved Question: How can I advertise my bike & hot rod magazine?

I recently started a website that is like an e-zine, online mag, whatever you want to call it. I was thinking of putting ads on craigslist in a few different cities, but I'm not sure what category I should use. Should it go in cars + trucks for sale? I'm not selling anything. I just want to build up an audience and start a real magazine eventually. Yahoo! is the one search engine that recognizes it so far. It's www.asphaltasylum.com http://www.asphaltasylum.com/index.php What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Need help getting out of this scam. Magazine Readers Service?!?

I'm sorry it this seems like a novel, but I'm a bummed out college student who makes little money. Okay, here goes... On November 2, I received phone call on my cellphone from someone for a "Magazine Readers Services" about magazine subscriptions, a $100,000 sweepstakes and a diamond watch. I had originally perceived the call as being from the bank due to their extensive knowledge of my account. Unfortunately, I mistakenly gave away some personal banking information though the phone call about my Visa Check Card as they had begun the call requesting confirmation for particular information about my Visa Check Card. This was done prior to the offer of magazine subscriptions, the sweepstakes and other gimmicks. I ended up being lulled into an agreement for several magazine subscriptions that originally started as an amount of $4.99 to an “agreement” for an amount of $68.28. About half an hour later, a representative from my bank called to confirm this pending transaction as it was the first transaction made on my debit card. By checking the online bank account for my debit card, I found out this company's name and learned of this being an alleged “scam.” I proceeded to look into any information about this company as I wanted to know if there was some way to cancel the pending transaction for $68.28 as well as possible future charges from this company. On November 3, I contacted a local branch of my bank to inquire on any possible solutions to my problem. The bank was able to cancel my Visa Check Card and provide me with a Customer Dispute Affidavit form. From the local branch, I was also able to receive contact information for Magazine Readers Services and proceeded to call them later that day to dispute the transaction. When I called Magazine Readers Services to tell them that I had misinterpreted the offer they had originally made with me and wished to cancel the unwanted services so that I will not encounter future damages, they had refused to accommodate my desire to cancel the unwanted service several times during the call and proceeded to lower the amount to $29.41 from the disputed amount of $68.28. The current charge for this ordeal is $29.41 which was made on November 10, 2009. Since Nov. 2nd, I've been "digging up dirt" on this particular company. Since then, I've seen several thousands of complaints all over the internet. Also, I've learned the "diamond" watch is not really a diamond watch, but a brand name (false advertising? that's a bummer). I've obtained the address and phone number for the company. I've tried several times to cancel their "services," but each time I am harassed and told that I have an "obligation" to uphold whatever agreement was made. Yesterday, I've heard back from my bank's dispute resolution department saying they can't do anything as the amount disputed has changed ($68.28 to $29.41).Today, I received the first of many possible magazines. I'm open to any suggestions for the time being other than hunting down the telemarketers and sending a barrage of gunfire their way (I'm kidding, of course). Any help will be appreciated as my sense of humor is the only thing keeping me from going insane from this dilemma( and even that is starting to wear out).I should probably mention that the charges are "per month" not "one-time charges." The $68.28 was for 18 months and I'm not sure if the $29.41 applies the same way. more

Resolved Question: Should I submit my poems with the conditions applied or negotiate it furthur?

ok so i've just got this message from an online magazine that is looking forward to promote and maybe publish my bits and pieces of poetry. Here is what they said: "Great work! Let me answer your questions. You remain the owner of all of your work. 21st Street Urban Editing, will promote, advertise and sell your writing on our website. All submissions we accept, will be edited, for free, by one of our agents. We will also submit it to publishing houses we feel fit your need. On the last day of every month, we will send you a check for seventy five percent of the proceeds from your work, along with a an activity report. In return, we ask that any work sold mentions 21st Street Urban Editing as your editor, and an agreement for 25% of all further proceeds grossed based on the sale of your work. (Only work edited and promoted by us.) If you are still interested, please see how to submit on our site." so Im kinda new to all this, i dont know, it seems to good to be true. Are the rates offered above somehow reasonable for an amateur poet? is it a scam or something I should go for? Thanks in Advance! more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my persuasive argument writing piece?

It's supposed to be a feature article.. i think it sucks ...and i think my english teacher is going to despise it too. here it is:Stop Commercialism now How many times have you surfed on the internet and not found yourself to come across many ads that have popped up on the page you were on or are on? Many advertisers are profiting from what reels us in, which are these many ads you hear or see on the TV, radio, internet, etc. All in all, it’s a two-sided affair. Say you are just checking your email and you see a thousand emails. Possibly, half of those are spam from those penny-pinchers out to get you and your money. So what should you do about this? Well, you have one of two options being the check all and delete button or moving all that unnecessary junk to the spam folder where it belongs and needs to stay. Commercialism is vastly becoming a problem not a success as many assume it to be. Studies show that 67% of teens buy items online and 37% of children do. Commercialism attacks the adolescent ages because they figure we are susceptible to any commerce that they are willing to throw at us. Also, many individuals assume this to be a more convenient way of purchasing anything and it being a faster way. That may be, but how do you know you are actually getting what you paid for? You’re wasting your precious time behind a glass screen. Purchase the more effective way, by going out into stores and getting what you need. Many politicians use commerce for their campaigns. You know those TV ads that always contradict that you need to vote for so and so for president instead of the other guy because he did whatever? This is a way of a scam to get money out of your pockets and into their hands. These ads are the ones that are appealing to hear or see, just an easier way to pull you in. Commercialism also costs too much money. Most of which is probably our tax dollars. The price goes up for a product if realized that it makes a certain individual sustain a cool image by using it or buying it. Many of these can be misleading, so any time you are gullible to believe one you are giving away money that could be used for something more important. Advertising takes up a lot of one’s time. We only have one life to live right? The average American spends at least 60 minutes reading, hearing or even watching ads on the television, radio, in magazines, etc. By the time that person comes of old age, 4 years of their life will be basically deducted away from under their feet. Some say that we are immune, too smart, and too savvy to fall for such. If so were true, we wouldn’t know so much of certain brand names, dress a certain way, buy the foods we eat, and our lives wouldn’t mirror the ads around us. In addition to that, we wouldn’t need pop-up blockers, virus protection programs, and firewalls to save us from all this commerce. So ask yourself this, are we really immune to what we see on the TV, hear on the radio, etc? If we really were, we wouldn’t feel the vanity of using these things to get a better self-image to fit in with the way society portrays us to be, which is all the same. It’s kind of a win-win situation at its best, honestly and ironically enough. On the contrary, you are helping yourself out somewhat the same way you are helping out these phony ads. Sure ads can help us out by providing vital information to us consumers, but there is way too much that we are exposed to. Ads can hide the fact of caring for each other, the environment, and the community. Many ads give off a bad message to viewers. Such as smoking meaning you are different in a good way than everyone else, you’re only cool if you drive a pricey car, and also making us think that you have to be mature to drink. These messages can cause conflict in families because they could or can influence the way a person in that family thinks. This could cause friction because of the choices that family member made due to the advertisement. In that case, who’s to blame here? It all depends on the situation. To blame for 90% of it would be the advertisement because it provoked them to make such a decision and the other 10% being lack of poor judgment and self-esteem that was made better by the advertisement. So for all this in mind, why do we really need commercialism anywhere? To pay the bills, to help finances, to help make it an easier, better, more convenient way to make purchases? All it does is cause problems. What does it really help? You’re not really earning anything but helping the advertiser earn your trust and money. So next time you fall for one of these, think of all the consequences that won’t cushion your fall. Whenever you see a pop-up that pops up on your screen, click the x button at the top right, whenever you see any junk email click the delete all button, whenever you hear an ad on the TV, radio, or any electronic device turn it off and read a book not a magazine, instead. You can do many things to avo more

Resolved Question: Does this job sound too good to be true?

What this position entails: You must post classified ads, such as sales ads, employment ads or real estate ads in your local newspapers and magazines. You do NOT need special skills or degrees. The position is very easy and can be done by anyone without the necessity to leave current job! It’s as easy as placing an ad in a newspaper. This work does not require any money out-of-pocket from you. We will provide the money to post in newspapers. Once you have received the money and the ad content necessary for the postings from us, all you have to do is place the ads from home by calling newspapers’ toll free numbers or by using their online services. Our company is located in Europe, France and prices for newspaper ads are almost double for foreign citizens/companies, this is the main reason we need your services in the US for the specified position, Newspaper Advertiser. You will spend max. 2-4 hours weekly, in your spare time. There will be 4-10 ads placed weekly, for each ad you post you are paid with $100, you will deduct your share from money we send you to post the ads. For example, if we need to place an ad that costs $500 we will send you $600, you pay $500 to newspaper or website that places the ad and you remain same day with $100 commission. This is possible because for a foreign company the same ad costs around $900-$1100. Almost all of our ads are employment ads from various European companies that want to have ads in the US. We may also have some ads from US companies wanting to advertise in European newspapers. You will enjoy working independently from home in a way that meets your scheduling needs. You can earn a full-time income in as little as 2-3 hours/week. This is an excellent way to supplement your current income. It is possible to work for us for a few hours daily and increase your income by up to $800 weekly. Resolved Question: Where can I sell my books and magazines (online or offline)?

I am selling all my belongings to go off traveling and I need to sell my books and magazines. I have 70+ design and web magazines worth over £400 but I can't sell them on ebay because to post them it would cost at least £40. I'm sure somebody would really like to buy them but I have no idea what I should do, where I should advertise. The same sort of situation with my books. I divided them into categories i,e business, science etc but ebay wants me to sell them individually but I just don't have the time for that, i'd much rather sell them in bulk. Please help. Voting Question: I dont know if this is a scam or a job?

Please let me know if this is scam or not? What this position entails: You will post classified ads, such as sales ads, employment ads or real estate ads in your local newspapers and magazines. Our company is located in Germany and prices for newspaper ads are almost double for foreign citizens/companies, this is the main reason we need your services in the US for the specified position, Newspaper Advertiser. You must spend max. 2-4 hours weekly, in your spare time. Resolved Question: Why don't baby formula companies advertise on TV?

I was just thinking today that I've never ever seen a commercial for infant formula. Have I just missed the commercials, or are formula companies under some restrictions not to advertise? It seems odd because formula is such big business and I see ads all the time in magazines, online, etc. Just curious and wondering why! I'm in Canada and wondering if it's the same in the UK or the States.Interesting points, but baby shampoo/body wash companies have commercials and so do diaper companies- even advertising very baby- specific products like newborn diapers or swaddlers, cruisers, or wipes, etc. Formula feeding moms would spend much more total on formula. Why mis that market? It's odd!And the diaper/ shampoo commercials are very often in regular prime time programming- at least here.Perfectly flawed: neat! Thanks! Those brands don't exist here as far as I know. more

Resolved Question: Any tips / advice on opening up a Dance Studio? (flooring and advertising)?

I'm starting up a dance studio in the fall. I already have the location, the name, etc. I just have a few questions (and probably more to come in the future!) ~ Can you recommend an online company that sells dance floors? I will probably only have beginner & intermediate dancers (tap, jazz, & ballet) and will probably only stay at this location for a year or two before I out grow it so I don't need anything too extravagant. I know they are expensive I just wasn't expecting it to cost $5-$15 a sq.ft. ~ Next, what would you say is the best means for advertising? I know after the first year word of mouth works wonders but for the first year do you have any creative advertising ideas? Obviously the papers and we have a monthly parenting magazine that will do a free article on new businesses in the area so that will help a lot. Just wondering if there is anything else I can do. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! more

Resolved Question: Bitless bridles in Young Rider magazine years ago?

Does anyone know the company that advertised their bitless bridles in an issue of Young Rider at least 2 years ago? I remember seeing an ad for them a while ago but I can't remember who makes them or their website. I really want one for my horse but I need one that is a deep brown leather that actually looks like a regular hunter bridle just without the bit. The ones I find online are too bulky, aren't leather or look western. I need one for the circuit jumper ring. more

Resolved Question: I don't know what to do with my life...Help me out please?

I'm 15 years old and I don't know what kind of career I should pursue. And I'm starting to panic about it. I'm not really expecting anyone to read the ridiculously huge chunks of text coming up. I'm just trying to sort out the mess in my brain by putting it into words. (Last time I put this question in the career section and got a ton of advertising people, so...I'm not sure which section belongs in) I'm in 9th grade, taking all Honors classes. My GPA is a 3.8. I'm taking the SAT II Subject test for Biology this June. I plan to take other AP tests, like AP Chinese, later in high school. My annual standarized test scores (STAR test scores, dunno if it's different in other states) are usually good, I often get 600s. I'm a GATE1 student, meaning my IQ is supposedly over 140. But I hate school...My school is suffocatingly competitive. I'm tired of competing with the girl who plays the piano and violin, is on the Debate and Badminton team, volunteers at a local museum, speaks 4 languages, and still manages a 4.0 GPA (I'm not exaggerating!). I routinely fall asleep studying...None of the subject matter is even remotely interesting to me. To get the grades I have, I have to try so hard I'm stressed out all the time. People, teachers, classmates, parents volunteering, have been telling me since preschool that I should become an artist when I grow up. From a ridiculously young age I've been associating drawing with pleasure and praise. I don't just like drawing...I feel like I'd die if I couldn't. It's like a stress reliever for me. When I can't draw, I feel anxious and my hands start shaking. I can't really suppress the impulse to draw, even in the middle of taking tests! Some of the answer sheets I get back are comical -- There are beautifully detailed drawings in the margins -- The world map in front of me, the trashcan in the corner, the guy who sits in front of me, all of my teachers. And then you look further down the paper, and I didn't have time to finish the last few problems. I learn by trial and error. But I always improve a lot when I have the time to practice, like over breaks, just sketching whatever comes to mind, copying pictures from magazines, or speed-drawing with 30-second online pose generators. I look at my drawings a month or two apart, and it looks like they were done by two different people. If I spent less time on my studies, I think I could easily be as good as a professional artist. It's my dream to go to some sort of art school after graduating. I know it's a really, really bad idea to become an artist. I know probably 90% of them starve on the streets and die in misery. Even many great artists aren't appreciated until they're already dead. Then their works sell for millions, but of course it makes no difference to the already-dead artists. It's a cruel world. Following my bliss could be the end of me. But what discourages me even more than that is my dad. He's a Stanford graduate who makes missiles for the government. He tells me to study more or I'll be like my older sister (who's becoming a doctor) who "ONLY" got accepted my Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Davis. He made me study 4 hours a day on spring BREAK. Quote: "Good thing there's Stress-free week, then you can study for the SAT." He gave me a lecture when I was in elementary school about how I should read nonfiction books instead of fiction because I'll actually learn from them. He's threatened that if I don't choose a career path soon, he'll choose one for me himself. He will be REALLY angry if I say I want to be an artist. I'm afraid he'd hit me. I don't know what to do. It's smartest for me to just forget about art and become an accountant or doctor or something...Maybe just a little art in my spare time, but definitely not for a living. But my heart isn't attached to my brain. Irrationally, I still want to become an artist. I don't know why I'm crying, this is stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, STUPID If there's still anyone who's still there after reading my ridiculously long question, I would like some serious advice. Talk some sense into me. Please. I really don't know what to do. Thank you, and please have a nicer day than I did.Yeah, as I stated from the beginning, I didn't expect anyone to read all of that. And most of you didn't. Thank you, the few of you who did! And...I'm pretty amazed that someone thought my endless run-on question was INTERESTING o.o Hmm...So I should either a) become an artist and be poor but happy or b) don't think about it because I'm young... more

Resolved Question: Can someone grade my practice SAT essay I just wrote?

I believe that advertising companies make advertisements look appealing in such a way that it makes people want to buy things they may not have wanted before. Advertising companies spend a lot of time and money into making commericials and putting ads online and in newspapers to sell a product of a client's. In the end they are successful because billions of people everyday go out to the mall, grocery stores, and other shopping centers purchasing items they wouldn't have purchased otherwise. My mother is one of those people. My mother always watches TV a lot as well as looks at sale papers. My father just recently bought her this 200.00 dollar juicer which works perfectly fine but now that she's seen this new Jacklyn Juicer on television that claims it's the world's best juicer leaving no residue behind, My mother wants it. My mother does this all the time when she sees commercials showing her something she likes. My mother loves to cook and over the past year she's spent about a 1000.00 on cooking materials just because of advertisements on television. Advertisements on television make it seem as if you wouldn't be able to live without their product and there isn't a better product out there. Over the past 5 years studies show that advertisements ranging from magazine ads, tv commercials ti radio spots and ect. have made 57% more profit than in the years before. New technology has made it easier to make products look more apealing to customers and to lure them to buying their products. If it weren't for these advertisements their products wouldn't sell so quickly. Last week I went to Walmart to go buy the new Twilight movie thats on DVD but it was sold out. Walmart had put out an ad on television saying the movie was on sale for 9.99 and that you couldn't find the movie this cheap anywhere else and it was a limited time offer. I was at Walmart in the first hour that they had put the DVD out and they'd stocked upto 500 DVDs but they were all sold out due to the tremendous amount of people who had seen the advertisement on television which had been shown at least twice on every channel between tv shows and movies. I stood in a long line waiting for a good 30 minutes but ended up going home without the DVD because it was sold out. Advertisements have a big impact on people. If they weren't so vastly shown on television commercials to online ads and billboards we see when we're out driving we wouldn't end up buying half the things we do buy. It's the advertisement companies' jobs to convince customers to buy their products in order for them to make money and we fall into their trap and go out purchasing unnessesary items we wouldn't have purchased otherwise. I blame the advertising companies for the money that people waste on buying products they don't need but end up buying due to these commercials. more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with these statistics?

The article does not provide the source or state what studies were used in determining this facts. Nor does it provide any insight into the actual amount of those whom the tests were conducted on. Resolved Question: HELP WITH RE-WRITE very very very important for college?

Please describe experience in photography so far… 5. During my freshman year I took a basic photography class provided by my High School that was all about learning photography and really understanding the technique involved. It was in this class that I found that I had the "eye'" for photography and therefore decided to take photography again my sophomore year. As each year progressed I not only expanded my portfolio but I was able to quickly advance to the next level and eventually complete the program all together. My experiences in photography enabled me to become the president of photography club, photography Editor of the yearbook, and participate in AP Art as well as National Art Honor Society. Aside from all of the work I was doing in school I volunteer for an organization called Save the Forge River which works to expose our local community's river and the importance of its health. My pieces were then published online and has become the leading photographs to expose the river at its best conditions, and its worst. Last year at a benefit event I had the opportunity to work alongside Anna Wintour, which was an amazing opportunity to learn and explore my opportunities for success. Struggling to find the right major and school for my future I decided to attend some non-credit courses in the city to see what photography major has to offer. My first class was at LIM and was designed to teach the fundamentals of magazine development where I was able to incorporate my own advertisements and photographs into the design. After the course and much success advertising became an interest, which lead me to continue the program at FIT. This class that was given at FIT pushed me in the right direction as it enabled me to meet new people and work in a studio for the first time. It is now my senior year and in the past year alone I have worked in a studio setting numerous times and at each event I find how much I love photography and the lengths in which I will take to accomplish all of my aspirations. more

Resolved Question: Would a YellowPage section at the back of a Bridal Magazine be helpful to You Brides?

A certain magazine (I'll keep it anonymous) is changing their format and adding a YellowPage section at the back of their magazine to advertise vendors. As a bride, would you find this helpful for shopping. Or would you just Google for anything you want online and forget about the advertisers in the magazine? I'm just wondering if advertising in the magazine is worth it anymore in this day and age of savvy internet brides shopping online. I need to make a decision before Feb 19, 2009, so I hope many brides here could post their 2 cents, I'd really appreciate hearing from all of you. Thanks in advance. I'll be watching this post closely. more

Resolved Question: Advertising or marketing major, and are they good for the future?

I don't quite get the difference between an advertising and a marketing major. My school offers an advertising degree through the journalism department, besides online specialization, magazine, and broadcast. A lot of people get marketing minors with this apparently. First of all, what's the diff between an advertising major and a marketing major? Could I do marketing jobs with an advertising major (Like, sort of business adminish stuff?) Also, is an advertising major good for the future? (I.e. good job prospects and decent pay?) Thanks! more
