Resolved Question: Do you think the US govt. should implement a program to stop pregnant women from entering the country?

US Birth Tourism becoming flourishing business By DEVIN DWYER | Apr 14, 2010 Millions of foreign tourists visit the United States every year, and a growing number return home with a brand new U.S. citizen in tow. Thousands of legal immigrants, who do not permanently reside in the United States but give birth here, have given their children the gift of citizenship, which the U.S. grants to anyone born on its soil. The number of U.S. births to non-resident mothers rose 53 percent between 2000 and 2006, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Total births rose 5 percent in the same period. Among the foreigners who have given birth here, including international travelers passing through and foreign students studying at U.S. universities, are "birth tourists," women who travel to the United States with the explicit purpose of obtaining citizenship for their child. Catering to the women is a nascent industry of travel agencies and hotel chains seeking to profit from the business. The Marmara Manhattan, a Turkish-owned luxury hotel on New York's City Upper East Side, markets birth tourism packages to expectant mothers abroad, luring more than a dozen pregnant guests and their families to the United States to give birth last year alone. "What we offer is simply a one-bedroom suite accommodation for $7,750, plus taxes, for a month, with airport transfer, baby cradle and a gift set for the mother," Marmara Hotel spokeswoman Alexandra Ballantine said. The hotel estimates the total cost of the package at $45,000. Most women stay for two months, Ballantine said, and they make medical arrangements on their own. "Guests arrange and pay for these by themselves," she said of hospital costs that can approach $30,000. For those with the means to pay, it's a small price to give a child the full benefits of U.S. citizenship, including the ability to travel freely to and from the United States, easy access to a U.S. education and a chance to start a life here. "We found a company on the Internet and decided to go to Austin [Texas] for our child's birth," Turkish mother Selin Burcuoglu told Istanbul's Hurriyet Daily News. "I don't want [my daughter] to deal with visa issues. American citizenship has so many advantages." The greatest of those advantages may be the ability of the citizen child to later sponsor the legal immigration of his or her entire family permanently to this country, experts say. http://www.eturbonews.com/15529/us-birth-tourism-becoming-flourishing-business more

Resolved Question: Guyss, HELLPPP PLEASEE!!! I need to paraphrase this passage 4 my final project?? plz take a look?

please guys i need a paraphrase not a summery.... The Danish cartoon crisis was about a media publication and its development and consequences would be unthinkable without media coverage and mediated communication. Media communication was and is probably the most important aspect of the crisis: It all started with the Danish media debate about Islam-critical self-censorship and the publication of the cartoons in Jyllands-Posten. It continued with the reprint of the cartoons in other media and media reports about the protests against the cartoons. It continued further with mediated statements from many governments, organizations, and individuals issuing their stance on the cartoons or the protests. Both the boycott of Danish products in the Middle East and the ‘Buy Danish’-campaigns in Western countries relied heavily on mediated communication – both mass media reports and the use of digital media, such as sms, the internet and cell phones. (Roy Langer, paths to discourage analysis of a sensitive research topic: The case of the Danish cartoon crisis) This study looks at the extensive coverage of the Danish cartoon controversy on the web pages of the two leading Arabic satellite TV stations, al-Arabiya and al-Jazeera, to examine the reemerging thesis of "clash of civilizations" and rising anti Americanism on Arabic media. The analysis identifies "transgression" as an overarching frame, but finds less support for a dominant "clash of civilizations" frame in Arab media. The media coverage appears to "legitimize" Muslims’ reactions to the publication of Prophet Muhammad cartoons, without abetting the "clash" thesis as some have proposed. (Aziz Douai, Tales of Transgression of clashing paradigms: The Danish cartoon controversy and Arab Media, spring, 2007) Many of Australia’s 281,578 Muslims — 1.5 per cent of the total population (Australian Bureau of Statistics) — believe that as a result of media bias, they are vilified in society as “terrorists”, and discriminated in the workplace (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission; Dreher 13; Kabir 266-277). The ABS figures support their claim of discrimination in the workplace; in 1996 the unemployment rate for Muslim Australians was 25 per cent, compared to 9 per cent for the national total. In 2001, it was reduced to 18.5 per cent, compared to 6.8 per cent for the national total, but the ratio of underprivileged positions in the labour market remained almost three times higher than for the wider community. Instead of reflecting on Muslims’ labour market issues or highlighting the social issues confronting Muslims since 9/11, some Australian media, in the name of “free speech”, reinforce negative perceptions of Muslims through images, cartoons and headlines. (No author, Depiction of Muslims in selected Australian Media (Free speech or taking sides) My dead line is tomorrow morning and it's already 3:00 am and i'm dying here, any help would be great.. i'll appreciate it. Voting Question: Questions about the book Riding the Bear by Sy Harding (Book on Statistics)?

Typically, I never like to ask people a huge favor but I am in a bit of a dilemma. Currently I am taking 18 hours in college and I am backed up with so many things I need to do that the stress is just making me want to freeze. I have a book report due by the end of the week and it is really easy but I don't have the time or money to go and get the book, I also have numerous other things I need to do that can effect my grade much more than this book report in my other classes. An associate of mine in the class claims that she found all of the answers on the internet and she received a 100 on it. I on the other hand just can't spend 45 minutes right now on searching for the answers. So if anyone out there in Yahoo! land can help me out by possibly directing me to a site where I can find the answers to the following questions or if you know the answer and can spend a donate a few minutes to type it out then I would be forever grateful and I can't promise to pay you back but I will promise to pay it forward in the future. (Yea, like the movie :P) 1) What period of the year usually provides the best average stock market gains and why. 2) What period of the year usually provides the least average gains and why? 3) What analytical tool can be used to fine tune the best dates of entry and exit of the stock market. 4) What financial tool (stocks, mutual funds, bonds, futures, commodities, options) is best suited for the techniques discussed in the book and why? 5) What is the name of the annual publication of stock market statistics mentioned by the author? 6) Who is in charge of providing for your retirement? I also promise to never take 18 hours again, HUGE mistake on my part. I am happy to announce however that if I do decent on the next few assignments then I should get all A's ;) Talk about hard work.Well Stan, personally I don't believe you but if it is true then I congratulate your parents for teaching you the value of hard work. I also congratulate you for learning how to pass on that trait. You'll either picked some damn good professors, are a family of professional con artists, or you all have a horrible case of insomnia.By the way, I wasn't looking for a direct answer. I was looking for a bit of guidance on where to find the answer. Technically, well according to you Stan, anyone who finds an answer from a book on the internet is subject to debate on their personal integrity. I say this because someone blatantly typed out the answer on their site which would be just like reading it here. more

Resolved Question: give me my chances to get into harvard?

Aite heres the thing. I'm tripping balls about harvard, and it comes out in 3 days. I just want to know what to expect. Heres my resume: - 3.5 GPA - this is ridiculously low compared to Harvard standards. I just went to a school which doesn't inflate GPA at ALL- teachers can only give a certain number of A's, etc. - 2260 SAT, 34 ACT - DECA competition, international winner in Internet marketing plan. Plus a bunch of trophies and medals and etc. - volunteering, just the standard stuff- nothing too special. - a lot of research projects which won at science fairs (sites.google.com/site/keshavsaharia/research) - interview went awesome possum - really good essays - I was at harvard over the summer for their 7 week summer program, and I got to know a really great professor. However, I didn't ask him for a recommendation, which I now realize was stupid. - I play two instruments, speak 3 languages, have eaten over 100 different types of cereal. any reassuring words? To put it in a sentence, my statistics (GPA/SAT) are way too low to be competitive at Harvard. But my extracurriculars and interview are really really good. But as the old adage from the Incredibles goes, "in a world where everyone is super, nobody is." Harvard applicants seem like super people, so I'm not really sure what gives me the ability to compete with that. Can anyone give their prediction on my chance of getting in? more

Resolved Question: Why Don't They Tell You How To Do Things In Computer Programs?

There are so many computer programs where you look in help and the instructions assume you already know a lot you might not. The internet does the same thing. Why? Why can't these things have step by step instructions. Why do all these computer programs assume the user knows everything? It's like the computer industry just doesn't care. Why haven't competitors emerged that do care? Why aren't market forces forcing them to actually give a damn about their customers? All I was trying to do was find out how to run ANOVA on a statistics program. Its been 15 minutes already. I checked help and it's no help. I look online and I still can't find anything. It's the PASW program BTW. Why isn't some smart person out there putting these idiots out of business? But there are even cases where it is hard because it is too wordy. Or for example I try searching help on the stats program and it gives me a bunch of equations for figuring out statistics and I have to look through everything forever just to find the part where they tell you what buttons to click. I don't care how it works, I really just want to know what to click. These people don't consider that people are in a hurry. People have things to do and want to know these things as fast as possible. Extra information not needed.Another thing is where clicking something on the program automatically minimizes "help". Why? I doubt it would cost more to design a program where they can both be up at once. Its almost like they went out of their way to make it more difficult. more

Resolved Question: iPhone vs HTC Pure: considering switching?

So for christmas i got an htc pure, one of the newest windows phones. Initially i didn't want an iphone because i already had an ipod touch and didn't want to work on software that was so familiar. Also, the rest of the mobile phone companies have had 3 years to compete with the iphone and i thought there had to be something better out there. I like the htc pure, i just think the iphone still does more. The windows market place is new and a development in progress so it only has less than a fraction of the amount of apps in the app store. So how long until windows market place can compete with the app store? Although it is a windows phone and can download and install non-microsoft-published (.cab) applications from anywhere on the web. Another reason i want to switch to the iphone is the capacitive highly sensitive touch screen. I'm not impressed with the resistive screen keyboard on my htc pure at all. Its just so small and so hard to type out sentences without spelling errors. Also i'm not impressed with the media quality. Playing mp3s are ok, but going online and looking at youtube videos (which must be done through the browser) proved the video quality to be terrible. Also i just don't find my self needing the windows mobile essentials which it has over the iphone, like multi-tasking.. microsoft office.. ect. I'm also unhappy with the battery life on my htc pure. I feel like i can't waste any time on the internet browser, to save the battery. The iPhone 3GS claims to have longer battery life so theres another reason to switch. The only pro i see from keeping the htc pure is the 5.0mp camera. The still pictures have excellent quality. Basically the only con i see from switching is the camera. But some how i feel like the 'iPhone being the greatest smartphone' is from its sales statistics which is from its insane amount of marketing. But looking at my ipod touch, the browser, the apps, the features im looking for are overkill compared to my htc pure. So do you think i should switch to the iPhone from my windows phone? more

Resolved Question: Where Can I find consumption/demand statistics?

I am looking for a good internet source of consumption/demand statistics. In our free market economy, companies can produce whatever they wish. Obviously from the results home builders, auto manufacturers and others produced more than what the demand called for. There has to be somwhere that has information as to how many new houses or cars etc. are NEEDED each year instead of what they hope to sell. How many new households are started each year? Otherwise what good does it do to build new houses if the old houses can't be sold? At the same time, our esteemed politicians are pushing a green agenda, but they allow urban sprawl that requires a huge investment in infrastructure as well as leaving behind old infrastructure with less people pay to maintain. more

Resolved Question: My exact thoughts of online piracy. I need opinions.?

Here is a little "article" I wrote on the goodness of online piracy: The Goodness of Online Piracy For years, we’ve been going to record stores and buying CD’s, and that sure made the record companies lots of money. But now things have changed, and by that, I mean we can “steal records” in the comfort of our own home with a little thing called “file transfer”. Yes, to all those who aren’t as tech savvy as the average teenager, you can import CD’s onto your computer. Each song is on an audio file which is put directly into your hard drive. With the greatness of the Internet, we can share files with our friends, whether it be lyrics to a song we wrote, or just a song by some band which we happened to discover. With file transfer, we can get these audio files absolutely free, and since it gives the CEO’s no coin, they are angered about it. The joke is on them now since they live like it’s 1992, and the only thing they can do is make the average consumer “pity the artist” for “not getting the money he deserves”. In all my years of pirating, I can say that people have told me that numerous times, and I tell them reasons to not believe any of those lies. First off, bands and artists make 90% of their profits from touring and merchandising. Even though record prices as well as song prices on iTunes are ridiculous, it still barely has any effect on the artist whether we buy it or steal it. For years, anti-piracy activists have used made up statistics to back up their evidence, which we all know is a load of crap, considering artists that are signed to Capital Records don’t just make platinum records with only $100,000 in their bank account. While most of the brainwashed sheep actually don’t mind buying records, those with a brain actually know the injustice that has come about with the record companies ripping us off in exchange for us doing nothing more than simply buying their records. They say downloading an album off the Internet is the exact same thing as stealing a CD from the record store. Once again, another load of crap right there. When we steal CD’s from the record store and get caught, it’s considered a misdemeanor, and not only do we show lack of support for the artist and record company, but we show lack of support for the record store. However, when we download albums off the Internet, we only show lack of support for the artist and record company, and what comes out of that if we get caught? A $100,000 lawsuit from the CEO’s who are so whiny just because they were a few bucks short. Nobody should pity the artists at all. They don’t become poor. In fact, they get more money than the average working citizen can ever dream of getting regardless of all the CD’s that have been “stolen” off the Internet. Not only does online piracy increase their popularity, but it also makes people want to see them live and actually pay for a few tickets. Music has a powerful impact on us, and it’s something that will forever change our lives. The sad truth is that it has become a marketing product, and the only way to fight that is to steal all the music you can steal. I advise everyone that is reading this to steal all the music you can steal. Fill your hard drive up with everything you want, and just steal it. You’ll be doing the artists a favor as well as music in general. Steal it, steal it, steal it! more

Resolved Question: Job Interview Question - list three websites I visit?

I have to do this survey to get this job interview for internship position. This job is for Math and Statistics Analyst (a.k.a. Business Analyst, Market Research Analyst) at Bell Canada. One question was list top three Internet websites I visit. These are my answers in order from most to less 1. MSN.com in truth to get news since it is my homepage but then Google News seems to point directly at news and less at Entertainment news plus it is the place I go for news. So either MSN or Google News 2. Wikipedia 3, Facebook (I don't want to make myself sound fake by putting sites of BusinessWeek, Forbes, GlobeandMail and other news website). Resolved Question: Where can I see the Web-browser User-Agent statistics for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects?

I believe that statistics of websites like CNET or Microsoft.com are not going to be a good representative of the Internet because they are more likely to be visited by the more technically-inclined audience (and thus more likely to have a higher share of hits from browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.). In contrast, Wikipedia (and to a lesser extent, other Wikimedia Foundation projects such as Wiktionary, etc.) are likely to be a close representative of Web usage as a whole, since Wikipedia is likely to be visited by a very diverse audience (students, lawyers, doctors, professionals, homemakers, etc.). In light of this, the User-Agent statistics of Wikipedia will give a very good idea of the market share of Web browsers. Where can I see the User-Agent statistics of Wikipedia? more

Resolved Question: Statistics, question please help.?

CASE: SHELL ATTEMPTS TO RETURN TO PREMIERE STATUS The Shell Oil Company, which began about 1912, had been for decades a household name as a quality oil company in the United States. However, by the late 1970s much of its prestige as a premiere company had disappeared. How could Shell regain its high status? In the 1990s, Shell undertook an extensive research effort to find out what it needed to do to improve its image. As a first step, Shell hired Responsive Research and the Opinion Research Corporation to conduct a series of focus groups and personal interviews among various segments of the population. Included in these were youths, legislators, academics, and present and past employees of Shell. The researchers learned that people believe that top companies are integral parts of the communities in which the companies are located rather than separate entities. These studies and others led to the development of materials that Shell used to explain their core values to the general public. Next, PERT Survey Research ran a large quantitative study to determine which values were best received by the target audience. Social issues emerged as the theme with the most support. During the next few months, the advertising agency of Ogilvy & Mather, hired by Shell, developed several campaigns with social themes. Two market research companies were hired to evaluate the receptiveness of the various campaigns. The result was the “Count on Shell” campaign, which featured safety messages with useful information about what to do in various dangerous situations. A public “Count on Shell” campaign was launched in February 1998 and met with considerable success: the ability to recall Shell advertising jumped from 20% to 32% among opinion influencer's; more than 1million copies of Shell’s free safety brochures were distributed and activity on Shell’s Internet “Count on Shell” site remains extremely strong. By promoting itself as a reliable company that cares, Shell seems to be regaining its premiere status. Today, Shell continues its efforts to be “community friendly.” United Way of America announced Shell Oil Company as one of its three Spirit of America Summit Award winners for 2002 and commended the company for its outstanding volunteer and corporate contributions programs. Several Shell employees were recognized by the Houston Minority Business Council for their continued efforts to provide windows of opportunity for minority business owners and strengthen Shell’s commitment to supplier diversity. Shell employees and retires give back to their communities through such Shell-sponsored activities as America’s WETLAND campaign, Shell’s Workforce Development Initiative, and other community/quality of life and environmental projects. Shell is also a strong supporter of the Points of Light Foundation, which strives to engage people more effectively in volunteer community service. Discussion: 1. Suppose you were asked to develop a sampling plan to determine what a “premiere company” is to the general public. What sampling plan would you use? What is the target population? What would you use for a frame? Which of the four types of random sampling discussed in this chapter would you use? Could you use a combination of two or more of the types (two-stage-sampling)? If so, how? 2. It appears that at least one of the research companies hired by Shell used some stratification in their sampling. What are some of the variables on which they are stratified? If you were truly interested in ascertaining opinions from a variety of segments of the population which regard to opinions on “premiere” companies or about Shell, what strata might make sense? Name at least five and justify why you would include them. more

Resolved Question: econ majors help me!?

can anyone tell me the strength and weakness of this subsidy? WASHINGTON -- Imports of processed French fries from Canada depressed prices for the 2003 potato crop, the U.S. Department of Agriculture ruled, and Idaho potato farmers stand to receive government aid payments as a result. The department last week approved and is expected today to certify a petition by the Potato Growers of Idaho stating that imports of Canadian French fries depressed Idaho fresh-market prices by more than 21% in the 2003 season. The import flood was another blow to an industry already hurting from the low-carb diet craze and a slowdown in the expansion of fast-food restaurant chains, which sell about 90% of the fries consumed in the U.S. "The last several years have been very brutal for growers in the fresh market," said Paul Patterson, an agricultural economist at the University of Idaho. The government aid, called trade adjustment assistance, would have no affect on current potato prices, he said. Trade adjustment assistance, long available to manufacturers hurt by foreign competition, was expanded by Congress to include farmers in 2002. It allows producers to receive up to $10,000 in cash as well as technical and marketing training if they can demonstrate to the Department of Agriculture's satisfaction that foreign countries hurt domestic prices. Petitions are made by individual states. Idaho growers who sell potatoes in the fresh market have 90 days starting today to apply at their county's Farm Service Agency to participate in the program. Once growers are approved for the assistance, they can receive cash benefits based on their production, according to Dennis Fiess, a trade adjustment assistance specialist at Washington State University. The payment comes to 3.5 cents per hundred pounds of potatoes, and Idaho's Farm Service Agency expects the estimated 285 eligible farmers to collect a total of roughly $1 million. There were 818 potato farms in Idaho in 2002, according to the Idaho Agricultural Statistics Office. Idaho produced 12.3 billion pounds of potatoes in 2003, down from 13.3 billion in 2002. Production rebounded to 13.2 billion pounds in 2004. Agriculture experts and Idaho growers said imports of processed French fries from Canada surged 24% to 1.72 billion pounds in 2003, displacing 670 million pounds of Idaho potatoes. The fresh potato price dropped to 3.85 cents per pound in the 2003 season, from the five-year average price of 4.9 cents per pound The government program's cash benefits will soften the blow of the French fry imports, but in terms of the overall cost for farmers it may not help much, Idaho farmers say. "It's a drop in the bucket for any average potato farmer's cost," said Keith Esplin, executive director of the Blackfoot, Idaho-based Potato Growers of Idaho, who brought the petition. "It won't anywhere near begin to make up for his losses." Mr. Fiess will be working with Foreign Agricultural Service and Idaho farmers to come up with "shotgun" business training for the farmers. It will include workshops, some available over the Internet, on such basic business-management skills as using a balance sheet and cash-flow statement. "We're not going to provide them with an M.B.A.," said Mr. Fiess. "It's more of an overview." more

Resolved Question: Are opinion polls reliable for determining the outcome of a primary? Does this explain Ron Paul's lower #'s ?

Many supporters have been wondering or even worrying about the weak 1–3% opinion polling support Ron Paul has had. There are several reasons why opinion polling produces these results that most people do not know about. 1) Opinion polls are mostly conducted by using telephone landlines. The reason is that landline numbers are easy to obtain, and they produce a fairly accurate and random result for most questionnaires. As known from marketing, each product has a life cycle, and those who hang on to landline numbers tend to be late adopters of new technology. These late adopters do not use the internet, so they have (most likely) not even heard of Ron Paul. For them the choice is still between Rudy McRomney which is thus reflected on the polling result. Due to this sampling error the real support for Ron Paul is most likely stronger than the opinion polls show. 2) Many opinion polls count answers selectively. They reason that by counting only certain given opinions, uncertainty and randomness will be reduced in the opinion polling results. For example, the opinion polls ask questions such as: are you a registered supporter of the Republican party, have you voted in primaries before, what is your yearly income, when where you born etc. These questions are then used to eliminate groups such as non-registered republicans or young people. Even if this elimination is mostly statistically justified, it reduces the showing support for surprise candidates such as Ron Paul, especially when an important part of Ron Paul's campaign is to mobilize voters who do not usually vote in primaries. 3) In order to reduce the inaccuracy between two polls conducted by the same pollster, vote multipliers are added, which can be based on earlier polls, prior elections, "scientific" analyzes or just simply guesses. Here is how they work. Let's say that a vote multiplier for Rudy Giuliani is 1.2, for John McCain 1.5 and for Ron Paul –3.0. If the pure poll gives Giuliani 25%, McCain 10% and Ron Paul 10% of the vote, the opinion polls are counted to show 30% for Giuliani, 15% for McCain and only 3% for Ron Paul. The chances are that opinion polls for Ron Paul have negative multipliers, since no-one conducting the polls believes that he can win. The same phenomenon has happened in various European countries during the last five years when so-called far right parties (with anti-immigration, anti-EU and fiscal conservative views) have taken many land-slide victories, even if their results in opinion polls have been often either poor or mediocre. 4) Opinion polls are not value free or interest neutral. Even if the opinion polling company would want to conduct a poll on honest scientific standards, they still know that their poll has been ordered by USA Today, NBC, FOX News, the Washington Post or the New York Times. So a polling company's self-interest is to produce a result that the mainstream media likes. These news agencies are not interested in polls that predict a great result for Ron Paul, if they would get one, they would not publish it. This can be seen by just looking back at the polling results from as late as late April. During late April most polls did not even include Ron Paul as a potential running candidate! He only starts to show up regularly after mid-May, where as undeclared 'candidate' Fred Thompson has been included since the very beginning. Opinion polls often lie, just like statistics do. The opinion polling for the Republican primary clearly underestimates Ron Paul's real popularity, which may already be around 10%. For example, sportsbook.com (a betting site – not a pro–Ron Paul site) currently places his odds 5th in the Republican candidate nomination race and 9th in the 2008 Presidential Elections. But let's suppose that I am wrong and the opinion polls do show the real support for Ron Paul. Still, his chances for winning are very good, for the following reasons. 1) As Justin Ptak correctly pointed out, "the national polls are entirely a reflection of name identification, not voters' views of the candidates." For example Carter was only polling 1% in 1975 and he won the presidency. Back in 1991 Clinton's support was at 2% and he became the president. Joe Lieberman was leading the Democratic presidential nomination in 2003, yet he failed to win a single primary. 2) The opinion polls also fail to grasp that the Ron Paul revolution is not only a revolution of ideas; it is also revolutionizing campaign methods. Campaign methods seldom change, but in the US presidential elections they have done so twice in the past. Back in 1825 when John Quincy Adams won the presidency he revolutionized campaigning by distributing buttons and other campaign gimmicks. A second campaigning revolution took place in the 1961 elections when the televised mass media made JFK the president. The Ron Paul revolution of 2008 could be the third campaigning revolution. Earlier it was easier for politicians to lie and get away with it. Today prior speeches and voting records are easily obtainable and thus politicians become increasingly accountable of what they have ever said or done. Furthermore the mass media can no longer determine the election winners. In such an environment the few sincere honest politicians like Ron Paul will win. 3) All conducted opinion polls measure the general opinion on candidates. In elections where half the nation votes, such as the presidential election, the opinion poll results are crucial. In elections where only a minority of activists vote the opinion polling results are unimportant. The primaries are activist elections and despite all attempts to reduce uncertainty and randomness by the opinion polling companies (e.g. by methods mentioned above), the randomness and uncertainty still remain. This is due to the fact, that it is almost impossible to separate the activists from the rest in an opinion poll. For example, in the presidential primaries of 2004 only 7.2% of the Americans voted! The Democratic turnout was 11.4%, the Republican turnout only 6.6%! In these cases straw polling matters more than general opinion polls, since straw polls are conducted in places where only the best-informed and most active voters gather. In straw polls Ron Paul has done extremely well, always placing first or second, once he even made a land sliding victory gaining 65% of the popular support! 4) The opinion polls give out the impression that a candidate needs to gather millions of votes in most states in order to get the party's presidential nomination. As noted above, with only 7.2% of the Americans voting in the 2004 primaries, this is not the case. For example, in New Hampshire with a population of 1,200,000 the size of the voting age population is around 1,000,000. If 20% of the shire folk would vote (an extremely high number for a presidential primary) 200,000 votes would be cast. Half would be democratic votes. Thus even if Ron Paul would race himself against all the other republican candidates, he would win with just 51,000 votes. And this is the pessimist scenario. Most likely the voting turnout will be around 10% and no other GOP candidate will gather more than 30% of the state's votes. In this case Ron Paul will win the New Hampshire primary with only 15,000 votes! As the CNHT straw poll shows, Ron Paul already has 200 votes and judging by some videos, there are at least a thousand dedicated Ron Paulians in New Hampshire. How hard can it be for them to gather 14,000 more votes for Dr. Paul? Using the same analogy, in California, the most populous state of the Union with 36,500,000 people, the GOP primary can be won with only 450,000 votes. Ron Paul will be aided further by the fact that five small states of Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming and Maine hold their primaries before Super-Tuesday and every single primary victory will give him an election boost. The smaller the state is, the easier it is to gather a grassroots movement that can influence the election result. In the primary phase of the presidential elections the ingenuity of the Ron Paul campaign will be clearest. All other GOP candidates adhere to some stripe of neoconservatism, which will only attract the support of the old voters (i.e. of those 6.6% of the Republicans that voted in the 2004 presidential primary). The neoconservative message is old and widely hated. Ron Paul provides a culturally conservative, libertarian option with fresh ideas that appeal not only to many old voters, but to thousands of new voters who have never voted in primaries before. He has already succeeded in turning the whole Constitution party, half of the Libertarian party and many, many anti-war Democrats into registered Ron Paul Republicans. Ron Paul is also about to succeed in waking up the elderly Republican voters with the traditional conservative Republican message of life, liberty and property. The neoconservatives cannot beat him. Their individual candidates are all too power hungry to give up the race and join forces under one name in order to defeat Dr. Paul. With the primaries moved closer to each other they have no longer the option to drop out in the middle of the race, meaning that the neoconservative vote will be shattered between a dozen candidates in every, single, state. The Ron Paul revolution has already succeeded. It has brought a lot of attention to the libertarian ideas of peace and a limited government. It has also put a strain on the mass media, who can no longer deliver any information they want in any manner they please. Just like a real revolution the Ron Paul revolution has become a movement everyone wants to join. The real test for the Ron Paul revolution is not the victory over the GOP nomination, the question is how to win the presidency from a Hillary-Obama ticket, which will undoubtedly be seen as a dream team by the academia, the mass media, the special interest groups, the bureaucrats and the politicians. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig8/pitkaniemi1.html more

Resolved Question: Where can I find part-time ambitious people in Singapore?

Over the next few months I'll be researching and starting up a number of small businesses in Singapore. Some of these will be internet-based and some will be more retail-based businesses. Part of the startup process will be to reseach the market and I'll need some people to help out. The kind of work I'm talking about would range from researching competition using Google, collecting statistics through government websites, and performing primary data collection through interviews and paper surveys of the public - things like asking people to fill in a questionnaire. It's not glamerous work but can be very interesting, and could lead to something bigger. It'd be very suitable for a student in high school or university who has a bit of free time, wants to earn some extra money and work on something interesting. Is there any place to find people like this? Some kind of part-time job board, career center, university employment center, something like that? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What are the best sites or services for looking up internet statistics?

I'll be starting an online business, but I want to do some thorough research into the success of current sites which are popular online. Resolved Question: How fast can files be distributed over the internet?

I was just curious, once I put up a file to be shared on the internet, how fast can it get shared and on average how many people can access it if the file is encouraged to be shared and doesn't break any copyright law? For instance, if I wanted to put an MP3 of my band up on the web, how many people can I expect to download it within a period of a day, or a week? What about for larger files? Like, say, I want to upload an hour long video to be shared freely on the internet? How many people would be able to share it within the span of a day, week, and month if I was using a program like Bittorrent? I know some of these answers also depend on visibility, so what are the answers for files with no marketing other than word of mouth and files that are marketed using website ads, PPC advertising, etc.? Kind-of like best and worst case scenereo in terms of visibility of the file? Also, could you list resources and statistics of file distribution and person-to-person file sharing? more
