There is a story circulating about a man named Bob May whose wife dies and he created the story about Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer as a story for their 4 year old daughter, Barbara. Montgomery Ward picked up on the story and used Rudolph in their ad campaigns at Christmas time for many, many years. Gene Autrey sang the song and so on to Fame. What is the back story to Rudolph? I always thought it was just a cute ad campaign that was very successful. I've looked with little success for Bob May on the internet. Resolved Question: Why is my internet connection not performing as advertised?

Today, I upgraded my internet connection through dsl to the advertised 10Mbps speed, the tech came today obviously did something because my speed did go up but its only clocking at around 2.1 Mbps, which obviously means something is wrong because, the only two speeds advertised are 1.5 and 10. The fact that its a good bit over 1.5 indicates that somethings wrong. Anyone know anything that could help? more

Voting Question: Enrolling in an MBA program: is my career (so far) an obstacle ?

Hi everyone, I've been working for almost seven years as an international finance controller in two major multinational French companies in Paris, one in outdoor advertising and one in pharmaceutical softwares and today I want to operate a major professional change with a double objective in mind: enter the entertainment industry and ideally come work in the US. I've looked around on the internet and I found some very good MBA specialized in entertainment ( more specifically UCLA, USC, NYU and Columbia). As every student applying for these kind of schools, I'm wondering what my chances are to be accepted in these programs ? One of my main concerns is the fact that I have NO experience at all in the entertainment industry so I was wondering if this was an obstacle to enter these types of MBA programs ? It's supposed to be a feature article.. i think it sucks ...and i think my english teacher is going to despise it too. here it is:Stop Commercialism now How many times have you surfed on the internet and not found yourself to come across many ads that have popped up on the page you were on or are on? Many advertisers are profiting from what reels us in, which are these many ads you hear or see on the TV, radio, internet, etc. All in all, it’s a two-sided affair. Say you are just checking your email and you see a thousand emails. Possibly, half of those are spam from those penny-pinchers out to get you and your money. So what should you do about this? Well, you have one of two options being the check all and delete button or moving all that unnecessary junk to the spam folder where it belongs and needs to stay. Commercialism is vastly becoming a problem not a success as many assume it to be. Studies show that 67% of teens buy items online and 37% of children do. Commercialism attacks the adolescent ages because they figure we are susceptible to any commerce that they are willing to throw at us. Also, many individuals assume this to be a more convenient way of purchasing anything and it being a faster way. That may be, but how do you know you are actually getting what you paid for? You’re wasting your precious time behind a glass screen. Purchase the more effective way, by going out into stores and getting what you need. Many politicians use commerce for their campaigns. You know those TV ads that always contradict that you need to vote for so and so for president instead of the other guy because he did whatever? This is a way of a scam to get money out of your pockets and into their hands. These ads are the ones that are appealing to hear or see, just an easier way to pull you in. Commercialism also costs too much money. Most of which is probably our tax dollars. The price goes up for a product if realized that it makes a certain individual sustain a cool image by using it or buying it. Many of these can be misleading, so any time you are gullible to believe one you are giving away money that could be used for something more important. Advertising takes up a lot of one’s time. We only have one life to live right? The average American spends at least 60 minutes reading, hearing or even watching ads on the television, radio, in magazines, etc. By the time that person comes of old age, 4 years of their life will be basically deducted away from under their feet. Some say that we are immune, too smart, and too savvy to fall for such. If so were true, we wouldn’t know so much of certain brand names, dress a certain way, buy the foods we eat, and our lives wouldn’t mirror the ads around us. In addition to that, we wouldn’t need pop-up blockers, virus protection programs, and firewalls to save us from all this commerce. So ask yourself this, are we really immune to what we see on the TV, hear on the radio, etc? If we really were, we wouldn’t feel the vanity of using these things to get a better self-image to fit in with the way society portrays us to be, which is all the same. It’s kind of a win-win situation at its best, honestly and ironically enough. On the contrary, you are helping yourself out somewhat the same way you are helping out these phony ads. Sure ads can help us out by providing vital information to us consumers, but there is way too much that we are exposed to. Ads can hide the fact of caring for each other, the environment, and the community. Many ads give off a bad message to viewers. Such as smoking meaning you are different in a good way than everyone else, you’re only cool if you drive a pricey car, and also making us think that you have to be mature to drink. These messages can cause conflict in families because they could or can influence the way a person in that family thinks. This could cause friction because of the choices that family member made due to the advertisement. In that case, who’s to blame here? It all depends on the situation. To blame for 90% of it would be the advertisement because it provoked them to make such a decision and the other 10% being lack of poor judgment and self-esteem that was made better by the advertisement. So for all this in mind, why do we really need commercialism anywhere? To pay the bills, to help finances, to help make it an easier, better, more convenient way to make purchases? All it does is cause problems. What does it really help? You’re not really earning anything but helping the advertiser earn your trust and money. So next time you fall for one of these, think of all the consequences that won’t cushion your fall. Whenever you see a pop-up that pops up on your screen, click the x button at the top right, whenever you see any junk email click the delete all button, whenever you hear an ad on the TV, radio, or any electronic device turn it off and read a book not a magazine, instead. Resolved Question: Is Cash Gifting illegal? If so, is there any instance where it can work legally?

I've looked all over the internet and there are tons of websites that say it is legal, and tons of them that say it is illegal. I know you can send someone cash as a gift(up to $12,000 a year per person), and the IRS doesn't care how you make money as long as they get their taxes from it. So if a cash gifting company has a 1-up or 2-up, I'm assuming it is illegal due to the fact that there is no product you are selling when marketing and trying to find people, or that you are trying to get people to sign-up to send you money? If you had a cash gifting site and you did NOT advertise or try to recruit people to send you cash, wouldn't it be considered legal? Or if you had a product or products that people would get when they sent a cash gift would that work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Out of the blue, I received an email, apparently from a startlingly attractive woman, who I'd never met before even through others, who wanted to Connect with me on Yahoo. The email was from somebody called "Dollie Walsh" who completely out of the blue wanted to Connect and be my friend, The picture with the email showed an impossibly attractive woman, like Katie Price with more style and a sense of restraint, and I suppose the sensible thing to do would have been to delete the wretched thing without comment or reply. But no, I had to be clever, so I replied with "OK, excuse my cynicism here, but people who look like that generally don't need to make friends via the Internet. My AV is the best I can get and I have no fears of being hyped or scammed, so I look forward to the next move - who knows, Dollie might turn out to be a living breathing human (but one who has adopted a very flattering avatar, as I'm sure we all have done in one sense or another? ) in which case I welcome sombody who appears to appreciate my poor efforts on YahooAnswers!" Silly, as I'd just advertised the fact I had a live email address. britney spears recently arriving in Australia for her "Circue tour" has sparked allot of contreversy about lip-syncing. It is a very questionable act, and among all, an ethical. people have paid allot of money to see their hero in the flesh, and they deserve a live show. I for one, bought 2 tickets for this concert, and paid well over $400 aswell as a "pre-internet booking fee". Aside from the fact that i am still excited to see the concert, i feel very ripped off... it was advertised as a LIVE SHOW. what should organisers such as ticketek be doing to avoid the outrage from the general public? should they demand only live performances (NO LIP SYNCERS!), should they advertise that these shows are NOT performed live, or, what rules/ regulations should be put in place to stop things like this happening in the future? more

I am so sick and tired of seeing FREE registry programs. You download the program, it scans the computer and comes up with this outrageous number of alleged errors and then you have to pay to have them fixed. Some actually fix maybe 20 errors, but nothing like they advertise. In fact, I dont know how they can advertise a free program that fixes registry errors, when it truly does not. False advertisements. So, does anyone know of any TRULY FREE registry programs on the internet. more

Resolved Question: What alternatives are there to ZoneAlarm's program-filtering firewall?

I've been putting up with ZoneAlarm's nonsense for far too long. Upon starting my computer I am greeted with a large advertisement with two buttons, one of which opens up Firefox (to further lag my loading time) and the other of which usually doesn't respond for a minute or so. Furthermore, ZoneAlarm has this bad habit of blocking port 80 (HTTP, i.e. the internet as through web browsers) when web traffic gets too high or certain sites are visited (thorough searches from every adware, spyware, virus, etc. program I can get my hands on show nothing's wrong). This makes it so that when attempting to visit a website, the browser will continue "waiting" for it to respond until the cows come home. I have to restart to fix the problem. Even worse, if I do not restart immediately or I attempt to close and reopen Firefox (it says that firefox.exe is still running and I can't end the process) it freezes my computer and any attempt at a reboot fails - I have to hard reset using the power button. Fortunately, other ports are not blocked - IM clients, games, and whatnot continue to function. My IM buddies can attest to the fact that I constantly have to reboot my computer. This occurs at least on a daily basis and, frankly, I am tired of it. However, in other aspects, ZoneAlarm has served me well. For example, I have caught a few programs trying to sneak internet access at random times. Internet Explorer is one of them - even though I have never run IE on this computer, it regularly requests access about once every 5 seconds, which can cause problems when doing anything full screen. I ended up permanently blocking it for this reason and have pledged to myself never to use IE again. (I use Portable Firefox on other computers.) Adobe products of all sorts have the same problem - upon starting, they all demand access to the internet, even though none of them have any reason for doing so. Now, the program filtering is a necessary evil for me, but the advertising and the random port 80 blocking is too much. So, are there any (preferably free, but I won't be too hopeful) alternatives to this feature? I have searched all sorts of places but cannot seem to find anything. more

I tried many ways to get money, by filling out surveys, linking pages, visiting sites, etc. But the fact is that most of them are scams and they never give u any money. So is there a reliable place from where I can get money from internet (such as filling out surveys, visiting certain sites, etc) and put it in my PayPal account. I don't have my own site so i cant advertise anything. Also I cant sell items on eBay, etc. Please don't give any sites which wont work or on which you want to add me as a referral. I found a caravan to rent on a rental site and contacted the owner to book our holiday for next August. We sent a £100 deposit cheque which the owner cashed on 20th August. I contacted her at the beginning of September to ask when she would send confirmation of our booking and she said she doesn't send confirmation, she emails it so she asked my email address and said she would do it. Last week I contacted her to ask why she hadnt emailed confirmation and she apologised and said her internet was down at the moment and she would send it soon. The site she advertised on is legit with pictures of the caravan etc but I'm getting a bit worried as we have no proof other than the fact we sent a cheque. Am I right to be worried? My fiance's sister is a nutcase. She's crazy, involved in a bunch of crap that I don't let my 10 month old son around. Her friends are all either drug addicts or dealers, her ex is in jail again this time I don't know why, he was in for murder (involuntary manslaughter I believe) and drug dealing, and he's back in but don't know why. Anyway, these are just some of the reasons I steer clear from her, so does my fiance. She's a welfare project, too. I'm not knocking welfare, there for who needs it, but she doesn't! She gets her electric, rent, food, ALL for free. Her TV and internet are free off of her mother's lines, she lives next door. Her husband works under the table. So, she's already told me how she gets it illegally. Anyway -- she has pictures of me and my son on her MySpace page, advertised as her "adorable nephew" .. we don't allow her to see him, because of the trouble that follows her, and the fact that she's insane. She won't take them down. I know once a picture is on MySpace it's the property of MySpace and MySpace can do what they want, but this is pictures of my minor son and me on HER page without our permission. I have asked repeatedly to no avail. Can she get in trouble? Could the police force her to take them down? Just curious. I’m looking to purchase a car in the near future, in fact I’m going to look at some this weekend. Background info, I live in Massachusetts, this is my first car I’m buying, but I’ve had a license for eight years, and a clean record. In my state (as I believe in all others, though I cannot say for sure), I cannot drive a car if it is uninsured, and I cannot register a car I would buy until it’s insured. I believe the following to be true, and if it’s not, please let me know. In my state, after purchasing a car from a dealer, I will get a filled application from the dealer for registration and title. After getting this application, I need to insure the car, and bring it to a state licensed insurance agent, so that they can stamp and sign said application. Then I can go to the registry and get the car registered/title transferred, and get the plates, so that I can return to the car, change the plates, and drive said car away. I will of course need the previous owner’s title, or a certificate of origin to finish the transaction to transfer the title, and register the car. After which I’ll need to pass inspection. Then I’ll be in the clear. Now my question is, if I try one of the various online companies that advertise on the internet, such as Esurance, Progressive, Allstate, Geico, etc, how could they come and stamp/sign the application? Does an agent come to my house, do I go to a local branch or office, or would I be better off getting this done with a local insurance company, and just switching over to a different insurance company after I get the car? Priority is of course getting the car registered so that I can drive it, and thus, insured so it can be registered and the title transferred. My ability to keep my job is at stake right now, as my previous ride is no longer an option. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: How do I get rid of virus win32/Cryptor? please help!?

My family recently got Verizon DSL and the first thing I did was install AVG free antimalware program I got from cnet.com Internet worked well for me except for the fact that a pop-up from my windows toolbar kept saying that my firewall was not on, but when I checked my control panel, it was on. I tried to click on the pop-up but nothing would happen. Finally I came to my senses and scanned for anything on my computer using the AVG program. Something called win32/Cryptor kept coming up but AVG couldn't remove it. I tried to look up win32/Cryptor on Google and unfortunately the first thing I clicked linked me directly to this bogus website that was faking itself as a Windows program and telling me that I was infected and needed to install its antivirus software. I knew it was fake and tried closing it down but it wouldn't let me. The "website" was called stop-spyware.biz/index..................... Now it is constantly popping up from time to time. AVG would detect it and a AVG security pop-up would come up saying something like this: File name: stop-spyware.biz/index.php?PHPSESSID=f70eb31b7e1d1d1dc22e8f663c47e9 Threat name: Exploit Rogue spyware scanner (type 800) Process name: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe Process ID: 2072 Also, while searching on Google, other links I click on also take me to advertising/spam/bogus websites. I don't know what win32/cryptor is or how I got it, but can someone tell me what it is, how I got it, and how I can get rid of it?! more

Resolved Question: I am probably going to get reamed a new one for this but.....?

Met a guy on a singles dating site that I advertise on. We have not met in person yet, and I am realistic that no matter how well things go over email and phone, you never know for sure how things are until you meet in person. Here is the thing though. He is only 22. He emailed me and when I found out his age my initial reaction was to run, and I told him we could never be more than friends as I was a decade and a half older than him. He expressed his interest in me despite his age or mine and said he understood but I could tell he wished I would at least be open minded to not ruling him out for his age. I ruled him out anyway, but went along with the friendship premise. The more we have gotten to know each other the more we like each other. So far he absolutely blows me away. We are on the same page in so many realms. We are attracted to each other, sure, but this clicking, this gravitational pull we seem to have, is not about sex. We have both been single for several years and even though he is so much more (even obscenely so) younger than me, he is smarter, wiser, more evolved, than any man I have ever talked to in my life. He is so mature for his age, that the fact that I am older and more mature really appeals to him, even though he was not looking for an older woman. That same maturity was also what made me end up totally and completely falling for him, as much as one can fall for someone they have never met because compared to men I have dated, even in their late 30's does not even come close to having it as together as this guy. I know we still have to meet, but I am still in shock to like someone so muich that is so young that we do not even belong to the same generation. Am I horrid? Is this disgusting? Is age just a number or is that something people just say to make themselves feel better when something they are involved in is so wrong according to society but feels so damn right? Is it better if I stick with someone my own age who is less mature, kind, intelligent, romantic, amazing? Is it okay to say screw it, I am going to do what makes me happy for a change and not my parents or my peers? I would really appreciate your feedback and thoughts on this matter, even if you have something to say that I will probably not like. This is new territory for me. from what i've observed everyone is stating the abundance of medical careers. this can be seen from any news paper,or internet site, the news states it weekly BUT what scares me is the fact that by it being advertised so often, when will this particular field become unavailable and jobs scarce. Resolved Question: Conflicting feelings...new to adoption idea?

We decided to adopt last month, a year after I brought it up with my husband after 4 years of infertility treatments and trying and no answers and not knowing why. He needed time to think about it and I gave him a year. I really gave him a year with no nagging or reminders. He had a full year of quiet to think about it and I respected that. So I asked the question, "It's been a year now, what are your thoughts?" And the answer was a completely open YES. We want to adopt. For two weeks I was so excited and we started researching the process. We filled out a general form and got a governmental number. We will take 6 classes of 3 hours each in a year from now and then pick a country and go through family investigations and then get acquainted with an agency which fits our criteria. Great. I am a 33 year old White American woman living in the Netherlands with a 35 year old White Dutch man. We fit the age criteria to adopt a very young child and we are married which is favorable. We got a list of "license holders" aka adoption agencies in the Netherlands with their websites. I started researching and all my old, naive, up in the air thoughts about adoption came crumbling to ruins. From this moment on I ask the respect of the readers to acknowledge the fact that we are aspirant parents giving consideration to the future of a child and ourselves and the time of consideration of all options of positives and negatives of all such people should be respected and assisted with knowledgeable good advise and this is something that we personally will not take lightly for the future of the life of a child or our own... Moving into this next step of our lives we start investigated all aspects of our emotions and concerns on the internet. To our dismay, we mostly find that all children ALL children available for international adoption are children with disabilities and the list is endless. We feel we are open minded, caring people, but this was a blow we were not prepared for. The web sites of the adoption agencies themselves seemed more like charity advertisements that could have just as well have been advertised on the discovery channel. It sounds very crude, but that is also our interpretation of the process. I also read more about the "classes" we will be required to take. 3 are general classes and then 2 are in reference to the culture you plan to adopt from and the last class (for everyone) is information about adopting children with special needs. Now, my criteria was pretty much set when I thought about this process. These stipulations made me confront myself and my ideals, beliefs, identity, everything. To my astonishment my husband actually felt the same way I did. We do no want to ask for a problem. We have certain expectations and they are just there. I don't want to change them. That is who we are. I have been combating myself telling me there is something wrong with me that I do not want to adopt extra problems and that I have expectations and shame on me for not having an open heart for the S.N. children and don't they deserve a good home? Yes, but something tells me from within, not with me! We probably would fall in love with a S.N. child, or an older child, but (well that's just it... there will always be a BUT in our family!) I don't want to go into a process where a "Charity" tries to talk you into something you already know you don't want to do. Maybe we are just really selfish people. God does not allow us to have children and if we choose to adopt it will be a child of special needs. All the love, treasures, joy, and life lessons/gifts these children may be able to give you, I have to tell God, I'm sorry, you gave me an instinct and this instinct is telling me/us, no... we want a healthy child that will fit in with our family or grow old and end up alone.... ok so i have tried everything, CCcleaner, manually deleting, AVG everything, and i even went into internet options and set block all cookies, which i then had to take down to sign in. so please dont restate a already tried solution(or not solution) i need to know these from someone smart 1.why the hell after i delete the cookies they come back EX.(tracking cookie.doubleclick, tracking cookie.yieldmanager, tracking cookie.revsci) and more, shouldnt they NOT come back after i delete them, this has just barely started today when i logged onto yahoo to read news. This leaves me to believe if they start coming back, something is still on my computer telling another computer somewhere to put it back, OR another computer is tracking me. 2.How do i prevent this from occuring, i know trackin cookies are "harmless" when they record your websites for advertising. but i also know they record passwords and accounts, and i do online banking. 3. how do i delete them? like i said i have tried EVERYTHING, i want them gone. i have NEVER gotten a virus on ANY of my XP/VISTA computers, basically the last 4-5years, becuase AVG protects me. I was perusing through the political posts and found that when people get to name calling of the opposite party (and all that unrequited hate) they always blame the media. I remember when bush was in power the media was "conservative" now the media is "liberal". Same network just different person mudslinging. in fact i currently read websites from the opposite sides and they both blamed the news networks of catering to the other. Well are there any people who will have a good, consistent, congruent, thought out argument that doesn't involve blaming others actions? is there anybody out there that will have an argument that doesn't involve thrashing someone else? anyways i believe there are other sources that one could use in the internet without relating to one party's propaganda to be informed and make decisions on issues. anyways blaming the mainstream media is the dumbest way to criticize. they are there for the viewer numbers in order to make a profit out of advertising, so they will cater to the biggest market share be that liberal or conservative. so these sources ,in my eyes, are not to blame because they simply reflect their viewership in order to gain and keep those demographics. if one day the country loves the color purple they will show anything purple but the next day the country loves green they will show anything green. but isn't that the freedom that a democracy brings? if the majority like a certain thing then the country wants to go in that direction. who is to blame if those propositions are wrong? not the media in my eyes, its every single person because together we made those demographics and the media catered to it. we are in this whole mess together we spent more than we made, we over hyped good things and forgot to invest on things that we were weak at and did not strengthen them. its no ones fault but our own. in one form of another and we must work together to compromise because that is what a democracy is. diplomacy in politics is the way to efficiently run this country of laws. My husband recently advertised a car/van on ebay and when a guy came to look at it, preferred another vehicle we had in the garage which while we were happy to sell, had not advertised it. He had owned it for some years and believed to be 1970s. The registration document must bear witness to this fact. The new owner has resold it on an internet website and has been advised that it is a much newer version (1980s) a fact determined by different components which the older model would not have been fitted with. I am looking to buy a dog for my two kids and for me, and i want something i will continue to find appealing (i know that sounds shallow but there are many dogs i feel are very cute when they are little but as they get older i don't find as pleasing to the eye) if i'm paying money for something i want it to be worth the money i spend on it. my boyfriend's mother was just given a shnauzer by him and it is quite cute. when i started to research these on the internet to see if they would be ideal, they seem like they will be fine for us (however the 'giant' and normal sized ones seem to not stay as pretty once they get older and some looked to get rather large), and his sister also has a small one and they haven't had any problems with it being around their small daughter. now that i am looking to make a purchase i have been 'shopping around' looking into different breeders to see who has the best value (and blood lines etc) for the money i will be spending. in doing that i noticed some people advertising 'toy shnauzers' and some 'miniature shnauzers' but i can't seem to find any where that really discusses the differences in these two types. i don't want one that will get very large because my daughter is scared of bigger dogs. in fact my father just purchased a 16 week old brittany and she is absolutely terrified of the dog (especially since his dog reminds me of marley off of 'marley and me' in the way he acts) anyway, any info on the differences on the two types will be appreciated. i want info on any difference including temperment, size, ease of training etc.WOW no wonder i'm not finding anything on them!!! basically anyone selling a 'toy' shnauzer is lying to get some cash is what it is sounding like. Hi I was reading the news yesterday about a photo of a celeb that wasnt air brushed got leaked out over the internet and showed the celeb with cellulite etc and it made me think that when we see all these celebs with perfect skin and bodies tit is all fake but women are made to think that these celebs are perfect in everyway and acutally go out and buy all this stuff like excercise equipment and cosmetic products to actually think that this is going to improve there looks when in natural fact no one is that perfect. So all this stuff we go out and buy that is advertised by a celeb has no chance on working, so we mayswell save our money and stop trying so hard to be perfect as no one is. I personally think it is wrong for a celeb to be airbrushed, as when we see them in films we like them for the acting, or doing whatever they do, so what does it matter how they look ? Personally, if I loved someone on that level, I'm not going to be making a huge statement of it on the internet. I've seen people on myspace advertising their love for someone. Why does everybody need to know what's going on between you and another person? The only reason I would do that is if I'm having some sort of issue, and even then so, I'd probably do it by personal message with someone I trust. But if public, definitely no names or explicit details. Just enough facts to get the issue across and get some helpful advice. I just don't see why people keep posting things about their relationships. Everyone in this room will be effected by censorship one way or another. There are so many types of censorship: Moral, Military, Religious, Political, Corporate and Creative just to name a few. Corporate Censorship is when media outlets intervene to stop the publishing of information that may depict their business or business associates in an adverse light. Privately owned corporations that report news also can refuse to share information that may cause loss of advertiser revenue or shareholder value which negative publicity may bring. The Telecommunications Act is a law that Canadian telecommunications common carriers like Telus, Bell Canada and Verizon are regulated. The Telecommunications act at the time was not favored by the media. Records show that there were only 12 major news stories about the Telecommunications act and a total of 19.5 minutes of air time accumulated over those stories. Much of the coverage of the new act was centered around the television content ratings and the V-chip while the considerable changes to the ownership rules of the media were almost completely ignored. Only bits and pieces of the opinions that the Critics of the legislations had were shown on air, because the legislations directly profited the media.
