Alright, I have a Linksys WRT54G router which never has problems connecting to the Internet. We just paid the Internet bill today, so it's not that. I've called Linksys support, but apparently my router is out of warranty and I'd have to pay $30 for tech support. Big help. Anyway, when I connect the ethernet cord directly from the modem to the back of the computer (skipping the router) I can get Internet access on the desktop..but only on the desktop. I'm in some online college classes and I need my laptop ASAP. When I plug in the ethernet from the modem to the router and the ethernet from the router to the computer (which is how it always successfully runs), nothing works. Not even the desktop. The only thing I can think of is that the router has gone bad..is that possible? Any suggestions? Thanks!! moreOpen Question: Is it possible to make a wireless Internet connection wired?

Is there any precautions needed against keyloggers for linux or is it basically similar to the whole "you don't need anti-virus on Linux" type thing? Would there be certain programs I could use to keep track of suspicious connections to my box, prevent / let me know about keyloggers, etc etc. So they would be able to get this data without necisarily cracking my root password.edit - flip the order or the last 2 sentences, lol. I have a 30Mb/3Mb connection from UPC in ireland. I have a Cisco EPC 2425 Router. I am using Windows 7. My connection was fine for the first couple of days (bar the odd disconnection or "limited access" message). Then all of a sudden it stopped working. When I click on the wireless icon in the system tray, the message next to my connection says "limited access" and then switches to saying "connected", but at no stage am I able to connect to the internet. If I open up the Network Connections window, the wireless connection in this window switches between saying "unidentified network" and "no network access". Now I am certain that this is a problem in my Windows 7 installation. I know this because I got the idea to open up a virtual machine running XP on Vmware, and try connecting that way, and it worked! It received a valid IP address from the DHCP server. So I copied the IP configuration and entered it into my real connection which resulted in immediate access. But now I have a static IP address which I don't want, for various reasons, plus I simply want to know why this is happening. So, if anyone out there has alot of experience with networking/routers or has just come accross this situation themselves and can offer me asolution or at least point me in the right direction I would be quite grateful! moreOpen Question: Windows HELP!!!!!!! 5 STARS FOR BEST ANSWER AND THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!?

A friend of mine gave me a Linksys WRT54G. I went into the URL that Linksys uses and began setting it up for myself. The only problem is that when I go to set up a password the router freezes up. I cant even access the URL after this, basically I have to unplug, reset and start over. So I tried not using a password and while setup goes fine, my browser can't access the internet after connecting to the network. So basically, this router broadcasts an SSID, but it doesn't do anything more than that. Is there some sort of setting that AT&T uses that I am not setting or is there some encryption that only their lame routers can use. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks. moreOpen Question: No internet access on my Netgear DG834GT?
I've been having problems with my router for the past month. When im using the internet sometimes it will disconnect and it will say "No Internet Access." The power LED is on, the wireless power state LED is on. The "I" which is the one to show that there is internet access will sometimes light up, but sometimes it is orange or doesn't light up at all. When it does light up orange or not light up at all this is where anything using the internet through this router is disconnected. Does anyone know a way i can fix this or should i get a new router, if you think i need a router have you got any suggestions and preferably not a Netgear router. moreOpen Question: How do I forcefully uninstall a program?
Ok here's my problem, my internet connection works but my internet browser does not on one of my laptops. I was told this was due to a virus so I went out and bought a new anti virus software because the Norton 360 I had had expired. To install the new anti virus I have to uninstall the expired Norton 360. I went to the control panel > uninstall a program >>> clicked norton 360 to uninstall>>> and continued when asked for permission. But then in stopped there and did not uninstall. I try again and again the same result, control panel >>>uninstall>>>norton>>>continue>>>stops. So I decided to search all files and folders with the keyword "norton" and deleted them all and emptied out my recycling bin thinking that would uninstall it, obviously it didn't work. Norton 360 was still on the Uninstall or Change a Program list. Realizing my mistake I tried re-installing Norton with the CD (so I can uninstall it the right way) but apparently to install it I have to have it first uninstalled because the CD is older than the one on my computer (since it was updated I think). So now I'm stuck, I cannot uninstall it with the simple control panel method and I cannot seek online assisstance if I cannot access the internet on that computer. I can't open the program either since I emptied it from the recycling bin. moreOpen Question: how do i get internet access?

I have a HP with windows XP hooked up to a Motorola modem and a Belkin router. The Road Runner signal goes into the ethernet port of my PC in the basement, and comes out a USB port into a multiport end on that cord, where I have a transmitter that sends the signal to the Receiver upstairs on my wife's PC. Her PC works but mine won't access the internet. This all started when I got an "anti virus" virus, and couldn't get on the internet with my PC, so I took it to the Geeks at Best Buy. They made some changes and had it working on line. They shut it off and started it a couple times to show me that it's working on line, but it won't connect at home, even though my wife's PC still accesses the internet. Best Buy removed 2 expired versions of Norton while they worked on it because I had Kasperskey at home that I wanted to install. When I got my PC back home I tried to install Kaspersky but it wouldn't fully install, and I can't access the internet to make the necessary updates to it. So I'm thinking it must be something in my computer, but I don't know what. Maybe something needs to be switched on or off, but I don't know what or where. HelpForgot to mention earlier, when I couldn't get on the internet, before I took it to Best Buy I did a "system restore". I still couldn't get on line so then took it to Best Buy. moreOpen Question: Computer frozen in normal mode after full system restore?

I have AT&T U-Verse's Television and Internet service. On our wireless LAN (provided by AT&T's wireless gateway), we have several laptops, PCs and a wireless printer. The issue I'm having is with one of the PCs and the wireless printer. The problematic PC is essentially used as a media/file server. When the printer or media server PC sit idle for a bit, I find that I'm not able to access them. I'll have to restart the device I'd like to use. My parents have a printer of the same make/model and it's wireless as well. But, their internet service is through another company, so they have their own wireless router that they bought (a Linksys one) and they do not have any issues with their printer going offline after sitting idle for days... So, I'm wondering if there's any way I can modify my U-Verse Router settings to prevent these devices from being inaccessible after sitting idle for a bit. Thank you! I have a notebook running Windows 7. It connected to my TrendNET router wirelessly (my router accepts the internet input from my cable modem). There is only one user account on this system, the Admin account. I also have a Mac G5 desktop running OS X 10.5.8 and it connects to my router through a hard line Ethernet cable. I am logged in to my system under an account that uses an identical user name and password as the account I am using on my notebook (I only mention that because in some of the results I got while Googling this issue suggested that identical Account names and Passwords might make things easier. So I left it that way). I would like to roam about with my notebook and access files on my Mac. I can share music files through iTunes, so I am obviously missing something while trying to set up the file sharing. On my Mac, in the Sharing Control panel, File Sharing is turned on. There is a suggested AFP address, as well as the field where I gave my computer the name "ChuckyLand". I selected my root hard drive in the Shared Folders list. In the panel on the right, there are four users (the Admin account I am logged in under, System Administrators, Administrators and Everyone). I am not sure how many of those I need to leave in the list, so I left them and and set them all to "Read and Write". In "Options", I have turned on "Share Files and Folders using SMB". So in Windows on my notebook, I have tried all kinds of ways to connect to that AFP address, or to my computer name of "ChuckyLand", with no success. Forward slashes. Back slashes. No combination works for me. Some of the online suggestions have had me doing things like monkeying with settings like "LAN Manager Authentication" and "Send LM # LTLM Responses". Like here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=635271 But I never got things working and now I am not even sure what "LAN Manager Authentication" should be since, when I first set it, there was nothing selected... there was an empty "null" grayed out selection at the top of the pop up list. I have tried so many other things, I was thinking about trashing this User/Admin account and building a new one with all-new preferences. (I just installed the OS so that would be no big deal). So, I think I am close. Really close. Please help me get the rest of the way! moreOpen Question: Parts to build a computer?

Think about it, all that has to be done is for an ISP, search engine, or both to keep a log of the IP assigned to you for a given time and time of access/search, all communications on the internet, searches, browsing, social media, your identity on those social media sites, e-mail addresses, all your banking information, credit history, social security number, every video you ever watched on Youtube, every image or video of porn you viewed, every file you downloaded, everything you have ever bought online or thought about buying and searched for, all your cookie files, everything. Everything could be tied to your IP and time of access. Bump that against your ISP and mobile phone carriers record of who that IP was leased to and everything could be known about you. This could all be stored in a simple text database. I know this to be true because Google keeps tabs on the sites you access and then you will see adds related to where you browsed to or searched. Say, if there's something illegal on the internet that's hosted from another country, what happens to it? For example, videos of real murders or child porn. Is it illegal to access it? moreOpen Question: "Unidentified Network; Local Access" On Vista?
Alrightly then, folks. Time for another round of "What the @)#()#@ is wrong with my computer?!" After coming back from my friend's house and repairing my computer once I come home to this lovely problem. What it does: I can and have no problems connecting to my home network, yet get "Unidentified Network" and "Local Access" once connected. Now, I've spent about three days trying to fix this via forum solutions that obviously did me no good. Help would be wonderful, thank you. What I've done to no avail: >Deleted Norton >Automatically reset IP >Reset winsock >Installed a protocol on Internet Protocol Version 6 >Disabled/enabled IPv4 and IPv6 and the network >Multiable system restores If anyone has any suggestion and/or fix that doesn't require me to wipe and reinstall my OS, please, please leave an answer below. I am running out of options and would really like to not have to resort to my outdated-by-twenty-years desktop.... which I am using right now. Quite amazed it still works. Please and thank you for any and all responces. more
