Resolved Question: IT Career - What courses would benefit?

I am hoping to switch my role for a career in IT in the near future and I am just wondering what qualifications or courses would be beneficial? At the moment I have a lot of general experience with computers but no actual formal qualifications in IT. I have been using computers since the old Amstrad PCW Word Processors with the green screens. When I was really young around 12 I remember writing code in Basic on this computer to create an address book. I have experience of putting together my own pc systems and also home network. I have pretty good experience with office packages and a lot of software. I quite fancy a role that would allow me to work with hardware as well as software, and where I won't be stuck at a desk all day but moving around. I am wondering though what I should be looking at for roles such as IT Technician? Would a course on networks be beneficial or getting a qualification like ECDL, Advanced ECDL, Microsoft Professional etc? Also, I have absolutely no experience of Mac Computers, of UNIX or Linux OS as well. I am thinking an overview of this may help. In my present job I do a lot of coaching and training with different things on our systems at work but feel I am just lacking something that will help me make the shift. A lot of courses are quite expensive at several hundred pounds and upwards, and I don't have a lot of money. Is there anything you'd recommend that is maybe £300 and below? Anyone who already has a career in IT what is your opinion of your role and advice? In the past I have heard some negative comments about IT not just from people outside IT departments but also from people who had worked in IT many years as project managers etc who ultimately ended up getting depressed and quitted to go open up a bar in Spain or have a complete change of career etc. Surely what I have heard are just a few bad experiences and not the general rule? Can you also have fun while working in IT and enjoy going to work? Are there any downsides to it being mainly a male dominated industry, or do you generally find more transparency as a result of this? Thanks very much for your advice, John more

Resolved Question: How do I get into the Game/MMO Industry, with these "skills"?

I know there's no recipe to this, but some advice would be appreciated. My problem is that I am not a coder, nor do I posses any technical graphical expertise. I can easily pick up on scripting and tools in existing engines, and can do simple things in 3d and other GFX programs, but I am nowhere near an expert in any of these areas. My strength has always and in anything been, that I know more then average about everything, and as such can always improve on specialists ideas, concepts and results based on the big picture. I am also very analytical, and have spent my life basically combining gaming and social science as an interest. But I am an expert at no one specific skill. I have an academy degree in conceptual game design and marketing, together with a few years of arts, and a year of electronics. no high-lvl degrees. I am nearly 30 years old, live in Europe, and I feel I have a lot to contribute to the industry, conceptually (while doing lvl design or such), but it seems like there is no in, to the industry for a guy with ideas, experience and a good overview but no technical expertisee". - even tough these are the guys thatnormallyy make orbreake a game'ssuccesss. This isn't an application, dont get me wrong, but I was just hoping someone had an advice on how I could get into the industry that I am burning for and want to improve. Thanks in advance - Zzar more

Resolved Question: What to do about marijuana?

Now. Please. Don't freak out. Just answer according to your own beliefs and try to convey your message in somewhat of a civilized manner. If you're a cop. Use some reserve and don't just flame someone for having a different opinion than the slow, methodical brainwashing the executive branch (did you know that's who cops worked for? No?) of the government has instilled in you. The Marijuana Debate It's come to my attention that marijuana is becoming an increasingly heated debate, not only amongst those over zealous hippies of the sixties and seventies; but people of every creed, race, and lifestyle. Lately, I have been seeing very many different shows on what I refer to as the liberal media. I am not a liberal media kind've guy, but I do pay attention to all that goes on around me. What I have been noticing, and what I intend to discuss and will award points to the best reply, is that the entire general overview is somewhat changing. For many years in urban and (believe it or not) more so, rural communities (where'd you think it came from? Mexico? Haha, try ohio and kentucky ) Marijuana has been quietly accepted as a very mild form of enjoyment with very few reprocussions. But with the recent uprising of choice in California, it has become an actual investment. America is still the land of oppritunity, even if the people who've been elected to run it are stupid. We still have some credibility in other countries, as long as we can hurry up and quit fucking up. We've already established that oil cannot be our major cash inflow, our farm quality has either been repossessed by the government by driving prices on produce down so low or farming families have simply died out. Our automobile industry is in chaos, and our steel factories are fundamentally inferior. Should we not then look to marijuana? Let us not forget that we still have impecable farm land, and with marijuana legalized, the farmers could simply apply for either government (if we must come to terms) or private contracts, bidding like any business would on quotas. If our government applied taxes equal to that of cigarettes and maybe a little more (remember, a pack of doobies is much more valuable than a pack of cigarettes!) This offers many good things. First is the influx of tax money into the government so that they can have it for themselves, secondly is the employment rate MUST go up, especially experienced marijuana growers that could align with companys like Philip Morris to make quality product. Next is the fact that it will give our country something constroctive today...get ready... WITHIN OUR OWN BORDERS!!!! Other countries will look upon us like, "Wow....maybe they all ARE'NT George Bush....maybe they'll leave us alone for a few years" World relations are to go only up with marijuana. Put your misgivings aside. PLEASE. Potheads do not breathe hellfire, nor are we known to eat, sacrifice, or generally harm people. We're just like everyone else....There, hope you get the message more

Voting Question: How did we get so far in debt and what can we do now?

$11.9 Trillion and rising! $383 billion in interest alone per year of wasted tax payer money! How did it get that bad? What can we do to stop this? When is enough enough? Medical reform can go on the back burner; we have to eliminate this deficit before our beloved country goes belly up! This a very brief overview of what I used to think before I found out that 'We the People' is meaningless and the Constitution isn't worth the paper it is printed on: *beginning* Many of us who lived through the cold war era were indoctrinated to equate socialism with communism. There are many aspects of a society that can be successfully federalized without it becoming 'anti-American'. I believe that three major industries could be partially federalized to make life in America much better for all. Even the rich will benefit. Here is a very brief description: 1. Medical Insurance. Have the federal government buy into medical insurance industry. Use the profits to provide care to the poor, elderly, handicapped and the disabled. (no effect on the economy, satisfies the need without raising taxes) 2. Energy Infrastructure. 'We the People' could buy into this industry as well and use the profits to replace taxes. (economy boost) 3. Banking. If the government owned some financial institutions we could eliminate the budget deficit and use profits to further eliminate taxes. (economy boost) It is not necessary for the private sector to control these industries to protect the concept of capitalism. There are plenty of other opportunities for even the smallest shoestring budgets to start a business and realize the American Dream. *end* (more advanced and detailed description in the blog at the bottom of the sources below) That was before I found out the truth. Browse the following websites if you don't believe me. We are all just sheep; slaves in a comfortable stable serving the machine (a gilded cage is still a cage). I am not unhappy with my life, just disheartened that I have no control over my destiny. As Dr. King might say, ‘slaves after all, slaves after all…’ If you have better or different ideas and explanations, write a blog and post the url so I can learn more from you too. Resolved Question: the candyman can what?

Certificate that is the standard for the industry. This certification can be acquired in many areas, such as master truck mechanic, gasoline engines, drive trains, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical and electronic systems, or preventive maintenance inspection. One last and most important thing a technician needs is tools, lots of them too. Because most employers don’t have tools and mechanic with out tools is worthless because they have no way to get work done on a project. A technician must complete at least one of the A.S.E. exams and prove they have credible work experience of two or more years to receive a certification in a desired are. Credible training or experience can be from 2 years of formal training at school, trade school, or a collage. Technicians also have to pass the test once every five years to ensure there up to date with the constant change in technology (career overview.com/diesel mechanic and technician career overview) Most sops nice places to work depending on how clean, noisy, lighting, ventilation, and many small factors like sometimes you have on the road job where u have to repair a truck on a highway so it can make it to a shop in all seasons. While working you need to be physically fit to lift heavy parts and set them on to jacks and hoists, and may receive small cuts, bruises, burns so proper safety should be taken first. Technicians are always handling greasy tools, parts and also stand or have to lie down on funny positions to get the job done right and fast. Most technicians will work about a forty to fifty hours a week depending on how busy they are and if they have an emergency repair. Many shops have made it to where they may be working on trucks 24 hours a day to help out the customers, with this that makes the job employment ever greater.( careers.stateuniversity.comDiesel-Mechanic) Because many experienced technicians are employed by truck fleet dealers and independent repair shops receive a commission related to the labor costs charged to the customer, weekly earnings depend on the amount of work completed. Beginners usually earn from 50 to 75 percent of the rate of skilled workers and receive increases as they become more skilled. Most technicians are starting to work around the clock because of the demand. There usually working for truck and bus firms and are members of labor unions .The common wages for a diesel truck and bus mechanic, including incentive pay, were $21.20 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $15.73 and $28.13 an hour. The lowest paid where making $11.19, and the highest people paid where getting $30.67 an hour. (Job salaries/collegegrad.com/careers) How did you start? After graduating high school, I spent 4 years as an apprentice, auto mechanic, and then I branched over into heavy equipment and eventually trucks. What are your required to do? A diesel mechanic is expected to diagnose and be able to overhaul a diesel engine top to bottom, refitting new parts where needed. Is it what u expected it would be, or different? You get a lot dirtier working on diesels than other engines and they smell a lot different. What’s the shop environment like? Shops are either very noisy when a few engines are running, or as quiet as a library, when they are being worked on. What wages do you make? Some shops are now paying $30.00 or more per hour for mechanics. When I retired I made $18.00 What’s your favorite part of your job? Every other mechanic I know loves the sound when they start up an engine that they have repaired, it's the biggest thrill. . I enjoyed the work, and it was a great feeling to know you could fix anything that moved, or moved other things with great power. Did u go to school for it, also how did u pay for school? I did not pay for schooling, it was part of the apprenticeship program, but expensive tools must be bought along the way. At retirement, mine had a replacement value of $20,000.00 more

Voting Question: How much more is it going to take for underwriter to give the final approval for my 203k loan?

My closing date was suppose to be last friday 8-28-2009. As of yesterday the status of the loan was: I would like to start by giving you a brief overview of where we are in the industry. Since the quick exit of Taylor, Bean and Whitaker from the mortgage industry we’ve experienced a major influx of business on the loan program you have applied. It is a wonderful loan program especially for the current housing environment but only a few lenders offer this program. When TBW exited wholesale it left a large number of loans in the industry needing to be re-submitted to another lender and Plaza Home Mortgage was chosen. Many of these loans were cleared to close and have had to start the process all the way back at step one. Unfortunately TBW exited at about the same time you submitted and this particular loan program is responsible for about 90% of our current pipeline. At this point the application has been through underwriting, received conditions, conditions signed off and we are waiting for our investor required second signature from corporate underwriting. What am i suppose to think about all this? We dont know when we are going to close. This is really frustrating!!! HELP!!! more

Long a major polluter, clothing companies are realizing the importance and profitability of going organic. It explores public resistance to organic clothing—including popular perceptions that organic cannot be fashionable. It also examines the eco-friendly success story of Patagonia. While reviews are mixed, there is no mistaking the green trend in the clothing industry, with increased revenues every year and more organic fabrics available. Resolved Question: Pre-Revised Revisionist History: the new age of American journalism?

Last night on PBS, that shining beacon of investigative journalism, ‘Frontline’ featured the story of the economic collapse of 2008 / 09. (I actually changed the channel in disgust no more than two minutes in, so all my conclusions are guesses based on the first two minutes.) Here’s the wrap up overview as recorded by ‘Frontline’ ready for entry into the history books: Once upon a time, private enterprise and the banking industry lived in a gumdrop house under a beautiful rainbow with pixie faeries and a bag full of magic beans, and everyone in the domain was happy and everything was wonderful then along came big bad meddlesome coercive tyrannical government, and government poked its meddlesome coercive tyrannical nose into everyone else’s business, took away the magic beans, burned down the gumdrop house and then government owned all the banks and ruled over all the pixie faeries with meddlesome coercive tyranny. Yeah, that’s their story and they’re sticking to it. For no comprehensible reason at all, the government all the sudden one day just barged in and took over the banking industry in something along the lines of a private enterprise coup d’etat. So, that’s ‘journalism’: Pre-Revised Revisionist History. They’re not even waiting for some kind of conclusion to the story or for a next generation that didn’t witness the events and doesn’t know any better. They’re telling us RIGHT NOW that what we’re witnessing RIGHT NOW is something other than what we’re witnessing. Way to go Frontline! Now that’s what I call innovative journalism! I know this isn’t much of a question but I’m just looking for general reactions and feelings (or for someone to hold me tight and tell me everything will soon be all better)… more

Resolved Question: Can one justify that the world has sufficient oxygen levels?

On 07-30-07, the author sent a rough estimate of an overview of CO2 productions & emissions to 30 countries via their embassies as follows: 1. MICROORGANISMS (One dump site only per 15 mins. or per day) a.) Decay microorganisms - 10,000,000,000,000,000 (or 10 quadrillion MT) per 10-15 minutes (earlier shown) or say, a day. Assumption: 10MT of rotten wastes only in one dump site, not including the world; b.) Pathogens - Expect less volume. 2. PEOPLE - 179,478,000 MT/day (World) Assumption: 6.5 million world population of which 75% are inactive, expelling 6 liters per minute & 25% are athletic, expelling 100-150 liters per minute. Air weight is 1.3 grams per liter. 20% of O2 is assumed loss during respiration per minute. 3. ANIMALS - 58,406,400,000,000 MT/day (World) Assuming that each human has a counterpart of say, 1,000,000,000 animals at any given time. Likewise, expelling 6 liters of air per minute with 20% O2 loss. 4. PLANTATIONS - 132,821,006,472 MT per sq. hectare per day (World) Assumptions: Plants on arable land, comprising of 1,756,891,620 sq. hectares (net after deducting 60% desertified lands). Forests are not included due to no inventory recorded. Source: land area, devoted to agriculture, 1995 encyclopedia. A tree has a net of 3 kgs. CO2 a year. 5. TRANSPORTATION & INDUSTRIES - 40,273,972 MT per day (World) Assumption: No current data on coal & oil production & consumption. Based on 1995 encyclopedia's consumption per year. Studying desertified soils in 2001 revealed nil organic matter, meaning the decay microorganisms had already consumed them all and hence, soil carbon has diminished. Photosynthetic microorganisms are likewise nil. With 60% desertified soils recorded in 2005, this meant that the world's O2 production is low. The fact that CH4 increased means that burnt carbon (in combustion) is taking hydrogen from water vapor instead of O2. The depletion of O3 in the stratosphere and the CH4 (hovering in the sky for 12 long years) are already credible proofs of low levels of O2. The fact that the solar radiation triggers new strains (which could be either pathogen or non-pathogen), is another serious matter that cannot be prevented. With low O2 level, this cannot adequately shield earth and cannot strengthen organisms' immune system. As such, pandemic is inevitable. No matter one can say that we have sufficient O2, the study of UN-IPCC that rice lands are source of CH4, contradicts & discredits already one's belief of O2 is steady, constant and sufficient. The world therefore has to increased O2 production and suppressed decay microorganisms (as top one among the above 5 carbon emitters) from proliferating & dominating the world. more

Voting Question: Which political party should I vote for?

Hi I'm going to be of voting age next year (ie eighteen) and I would like to vote in the next election, but I don't really know very much about politics. If I give an overview of my views, could someone point me at the right party? Thanks I believe the welfare state is a great idea but if possible should be improved (there's always room for improvement), I believe in complete equality for all races, religions and classes, I think we should continue to allow immigrants in (we were just lucky to be born here - they have as much right to live here as we do) and I also think that we should nationalise more of our industries (such as the trains) and that we should tax corporations; we don't want to to turn too capitalist afterall. Thanks. I know there may not be a party with all of my criteria but if someone could tell me which party is the closest match it would be much appreciated. I'm British by the way, so only British suggestions please. Thanks again.Well I'm very patriotic so I won't ever get another citizenship - but thanks for the advice; I'll look up your democrat party and compare their ideology with British parties. ThanksI'm not saying we should allow any and everyone in - and I think people should have to apply for a citizenship rather than just being able to settle down here for nothing (EU citizens excepted). I just mean that I don't support parties that want to close the doors to immigrants. more

Resolved Question: When does Barack "Karl Marx" Obamovich take control of the rest of the capitalistic county he loathes so much?

Marxism holds that class struggle is the central element of social change. "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggle" ( –Communist Manifesto). In the present form of society, capitalism, the two main classes are the capitalists (or bourgeoisie), who own the means of producing the necessities of life; and the workers (or proletariat) who do not own those means of production and therefore must work for the capitalists in order to survive. Marxism holds that such a system is exploitive as well as, in the final analysis, economically irrational. Marxism aims at the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement by a classless society in which goods are produced for their usefulness not profitability; and distributed according to the principles of (at first): "from each according to their ability, to each according to their work"; and finally, in the most advanced stage: "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism#Overview The above link should be read by all of those 'highly educated" liberals who obviously do not know the definition of Marxism nor the definition of socialism. Resolved Question: Can person who speaks arabic fluently translate me this? please help!!!!!!!?

Plot Overview Ishmael, the narrator, announces his intent to ship aboard a whaling vessel. He has made several voyages as a sailor but none as a whaler. He travels to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he stays in a whalers' inn. Since the inn is rather full, he has to share a bed with a harpooner from the South Pacific named Queequeg. At first repulsed by Queequeg's strange habits and shocking appearance (Queequeg is covered with tattoos), Ishmael eventually comes to appreciate the man's generosity and kind spirit, and the two decide to seek work on a whaling vessel together. They take a ferry to Nantucket, the traditional capital of the whaling industry. There they secure berths on the Pequod, a savage-looking ship adorned with the bones and teeth of sperm whales. Peleg and Bildad, the Pequod's Quaker owners, drive a hard bargain in terms of salary. They also mention the ship's mysterious captain, Ahab, who is still recovering from losing his leg in an encounter with a sperm whale on his last voyage. The Pequod leaves Nantucket on a cold Christmas Day with a crew made up of men from many different countries and races. Soon the ship is in warmer waters, and Ahab makes his first appearance on deck, balancing gingerly on his false leg, which is made from a sperm whale's jaw. He announces his desire to pursue and kill Moby Dick, the legendary great white whale who took his leg, because he sees this whale as the embodiment of evil. Ahab nails a gold doubloon to the mast and declares that it will be the prize for the first man to sight the whale. As the Pequod sails toward the southern tip of Africa, whales are sighted and unsuccessfully hunted. During the hunt, a group of men, none of whom anyone on the ship's crew has seen before on the voyage, emerges from the hold. The men's leader is an exotic-looking man named Fedallah. These men constitute Ahab's private harpoon crew, smuggled aboard in defiance of Bildad and Peleg. Ahab hopes that their skills and Fedallah's prophetic abilities will help him in his hunt for Moby Dick. The Pequod rounds Africa and enters the Indian Ocean. A few whales are successfully caught and processed for their oil. From time to time, the ship encounters other whaling vessels. Ahab always demands information about Moby Dick from their captains. One of the ships, the Jeroboam, carries Gabriel, a crazed prophet who predicts doom for anyone who threatens Moby Dick. His predictions seem to carry some weight, as those aboard his ship who have hunted the whale have met disaster. While trying to drain the oil from the head of a captured sperm whale, Tashtego, one of the Pequod's harpooners, falls into the whale's voluminous head, which then rips free of the ship and begins to sink. Queequeg saves Tashtego by diving into the ocean and cutting into the slowly sinking head. During another whale hunt, Pip, the Pequod's black cabin boy, jumps from a whaleboat and is left behind in the middle of the ocean. He goes insane as the result of the experience and becomes a crazy but prophetic jester for the ship. Soon after, the Pequod meets the Samuel Enderby, a whaling ship whose skipper, Captain Boomer, has lost an arm in an encounter with Moby Dick. The two captains discuss the whale; Boomer, happy simply to have survived his encounter, cannot understand Ahab's lust for vengeance. Not long after, Queequeg falls ill and has the ship's carpenter make him a coffin in anticipation of his death. He recovers, however, and the coffin eventually becomes the Pequod's replacement life buoy. Ahab orders a harpoon forged in the expectation that he will soon encounter Moby Dick. He baptizes the harpoon with the blood of the Pequod's three harpooners. The Pequod kills several more whales. Issuing a prophecy about Ahab's death, Fedallah declares that Ahab will first see two hearses, the second of which will be made only from American wood, and that he will be killed by hemp rope. Ahab interprets these words to mean that he will not die at sea, where there are no hearses and no hangings. A typhoon hits the Pequod, illuminating it with electrical fire. Ahab takes this occurrence as a sign of imminent confrontation and success, but Starbuck, the ship's first mate, takes it as a bad omen and considers killing Ahab to end the mad quest. After the storm ends, one of the sailors falls from the ship's masthead and drowns—a grim foreshadowing of what lies ahead. Ahab's fervent desire to find and destroy Moby Dick continues to intensify, and the mad Pip is now his constant companion. The Pequod approaches the equator, where Ahab expects to find the great whale. The ship encounters two more whaling ships, the Rachel and the Delight, both of which have recently had fatal encounters with the whale. Ahab finally sights Moby Dick. The harpoon boats are launched, and Moby Dick attacks Ahab's harpoon boat, destroying it. The next day, Moby Dick is sighted again, and the boats are lowered once more. The whale more

Voting Question: Need an unbiased answer - why is the lawyer/lawmaker industry overwhelmingly supportive of democrats?

It's for an assignment, having some trouble coming up with a good answer, things like healthcare/insurance and oil companies are pretty easy to explain for the republican side, media and publications again very easy for the democrats, but I'm not quite sure why lawmakers are overwhelmingly in support of democrats. I need a good unbiased answer, not "Lawyers are smarter so theyre democrats" or "Democrats make stupid laws so lawyers can make more money". Resolved Question: My husband make me look like an ass in front of my boss?

I was previously laid off from my job of 8 years when the housing industry collapsed 6 months ago and just happened to find a job making the same salary. It is in a completely different field but it pays the bills. As luck would have it, now the company that I've been at for 5 months is laying off and it put me in a panic. My job is not a necessity and I was the last person hired in 7 years, so I've been taking on crazy responsibilies to make myself indespensable. The area that my work spends MOST of their money is shipping. As it happens, my husband handles logistics and freight for a living so I sat him down and told him that I wanted to cut our costs on shipping. If it's my idea saving my company thousands of dollars and my husbands company handling it, then I become indespensible and have security as long as I keep performing. Sounds somewhat creepy but I have a 12 month son and my salary is necessary in order to pay the bills. My husband asked me questions about our shipping then suggested that I sign up for a new program at his work that gives us a bigger shipping discount. Perfect! All I needed was for our HR dept. to fill out a form about our shipments and annual spending to give to him, so I turned it in. That was a month ago.... Well I guess the HR manager finally decided to get to it today b/c I was called into her office where my boss and the owner were sitting. I was then put on the spot and asked to explain the ins and outs of the program to them and why they should give out such personal information on a form. I did the best I could at explainging what I knew about the program and it was enough to sell them on the idea, but my boss had some questions about the form and application process that I just couldn't answer. So, naturally the owner asked me to call my husband (who has worked with us a few times and saved us money) so he could help explain how the process worked. Now, small freight isn't my husbands department BUT he knew enough to explain a basic overview to me and to assure me that it would be worth it. He was even the person to fax over the paper work for my company to fill out. Why wouldn't I call my husband about this? I don't know who in his company would take over the account later; I don't work there! When I didn't get him at the office I called his cell phone and he answered. I explained that I was sitting in the room with the owner, my boss and the HR manager and told him that we were going over the paperwork and that they had a few simple questions. He said that he wasn't sure he'd have the answer to all of the questions but I told him that was fine for now and then asked him again to give them a brief overview of what the program does. I didn't ask him to go into details, I just asked him to explain the basics to them so that they wouldn't be weirded out about filling out personal info and not knowing why it was necessary. Oh...Did I mention how small and quiet the room was and how the phone volume was set to "Deaf?" And what was my husbands response to me asking him to help? "I just walked out of the office and it's been a long morning. I am on my lunch break and don't feel like doing this right now. This is my time to relax. I don't know enough to talk to them about the program anyway, that's not my department. You will have to call so and so at the office. He's at lunch but just leave him a message" My boss, the owner and the HR manager heard his sarcastic "I don't give a shit" response and the look on their face made me pale. I was SO embarassed. To make matters worse, I called the guy my husband told me to call and he never called back. I looked like a TOTAL Jackass and so did he and his company. I am beyond furious with my husband, who STILL thinks that I am in the wrong!! He said that it was his lunch break and that he had every right to tell a "client" that he couldn't work on his lunch break. I told him that I was his WIFE asking her husband to help her out with the packet the HE sent. He replied to that with "you need to learn how to cut off our relationship when it comes to work if you're going to be using us" This was my big chance to WOW my boss and I ended up looking like a jerk off b/c the only person I did manage to get in touch with was my hubby..the guy who suggested we sign up...and he refused to help b/c it was his lunch and he didn't feel like doing any work. I don't even want to look at him tonight. He STILL thinks he was right and that I am overreacting and keeps acting like I am just going to forget about it. Jerk!! I don't even know how to deal with this. Not with my work OR with my husband. So much for job security!! more

Voting Question: What would be a good company to do this paper on?

Each student will individually prepare a financial analysis of a selected publicly traded company. Every student will select a different company, subject to instructor approval. The selection is on a first-come-first-serve basis, so notify me of your choice as soon as possible, before the due date (see schedule at the back of the syllabus). It is not recommended that you selected a company that is a bank, insurance company or other financial services company, nor a company that is going through, or has recently gone through financial distress or merger. The paper should address four areas: o Company Description. This section should provide a short overview of the company and a description of how this particular company generates cash and provides growth opportunities (highlighting divisional performance, if applicable). Students should also include a historical look at the stock price for this company, looking at the last 3-5 years of performance. o Industry Overview. This section should include the key financial issues for the industry, and provide a framework of how their target company compares to other major companies in terms of market share, etc. o Financial Statement Analysis. This analysis should include percent change and common size statements and financial ratio analysis; in addition to calculations, students should evaluate the company’s performance relative to a peer/competitor company, explain the cause of such performance, where possible, and use this analysis to identify any problems to solve or opportunities to exploit. Data should be analyzed for at least 3 years (most recent 10K); 5 years is recommended. o Outlook. Students should conclude the paper with an overall analysis of how the company has preformed to date, and what is expected for the future (and what the company needs to do in order to achieve this expected level of shareholder value). more

Resolved Question: How did consumer credit counselors become a mandatory part of the bankruptcy process?

In 2005, it became the law in the United States that before a person could file for bankruptcy protection, they needed to complete consumer credit counseling. I am very interested in reading a case study about how they (the consumer credit counseling industry) pulled this off. I have a cursory understanding of the issue - the arguments, the changes to non-profit status, etc... so I don't want just some high level, overview. I am much more interested in the steps and arguments they used to accomplish this. more

Resolved Question: Could you check my language mistakes? Please?

"Thinking about my own business I am sure I want to work hard and be a part of my business. I am really motivated to spend most of my free time on setting-up, starting and running my own business as well as developing my own skills. Decision making and risk taking skills will be needed for me to be able to run my coffee shop successfully because if I am faced with important decision I need to be able to over come it quickly so that it doesn’t affect the way how I run my business in a bad way. I also have think carefully to be able to make the correct decisions for my business because if I don’t then my business could suffer. Without taking risks I will find it really hard to exist on the market and survive in the future. Risks in which I may take within my business would be introducing a new range of different product. It could make my business more successful and profitable or it could cause my business to go bankrupt, depending on whether my customers like the changes. Marketing skills will be needed for me to run my business because I need to exactly know what my target group is and how to target at this particular group of people. I also need to know where to advertise my business to make a profit. In the future I need to be able to create good promotions and offers to be competitive and to keep up with competitors." "There are many ways my business can measure its financial resources and how it is doing: • Ratio analysis. Ratio can help me to see how my business is doing now and allow it to see how it compares to last year performance or the year before and against other competitive businesses. For these ratios to be useful they should be compared over time to see if there are any trends and also between businesses within the same industry. • Profit and loss account. It shows the profit or loss of the business at the end of a financial year. It is the revenue minus both cost of sale and overheads (other costs of the business). • Balance sheet It is an overview of the financial position of a business. It shows what assets and liabilities the business has, and how the business is funded. Producing a balance sheet is important because it shows how my business is financed (through creditor, loans etc.) It also allows to get a snapshot of how much my business is actually worth." Resolved Question: Any person that lives in Ireland can answer this one, thanks...?

I have citizenship to Ireland as my father is from Dublin and plan to relocate there within the next year or two. I am heading there shortly to visit family and check things out as I haven't visited in 12 years. I'm currently working as a Criminal Defense Investigator in California and I'm even considering a career change to perhaps the medical industry. I'm curious as to what the costs are for a college education is, how the job market is, and how insane I am for even considering this? I've heard mixed things - that it's expensive, difficult, that it's easy...at this point I'm not too sure about Dublin as it's expensive and was considering somewhere more to the west or south. The biggest concern I have is finding a decent job that will cover my living expenses while I go to college. Are the employment placement offices pretty efficient? Money isn't too much of a problem as I do have some financial support. And before you ask, "Why would you leave where you live?" Those reasons are my own, and my mind is set on leaving here. So don't try and talk me out of it. haha A broad overview would be nice if someone could answer, thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Perfect Competition Question (Baseball & Kayak Sales) - Check My Work?

Here's the general overview of the question: Let's assume that the market for kayak rentals is perfectly competitive. This means that no kayak store has substantial market share and that each store offers the same kayaks. An entrepreneur can open a kayak store without worrying about government regulations (that is, there's free entry), and an existing owner can exit the market easily as well (that is, there's free exit). The graph below shows the industry supply and demand curves for the perfectly competitive market for kayaks near the ballpark. When fans first found out about Bonds' absence back in March, the beginning of the baseball season, their demand for kayaks decreased. S1 is the initial supply curve. Price Curves (Supply & Demand): http://courses.aplia.com/problemsetassets/micro/chung_bonds/3_static_graph.gif Suppose that the graph below shows the marginal cost (MC) and average total cost (ATC) curves for a typical perfectly competitive kayak store. (Check Graph Below)Cost Curves: http://courses.aplia.com/problemsetassets/micro/chung_bonds/3_1_static_graph.gif #1 - When Bonds was playing (before his injury), how much profit was the typical kayak rental store earning? A. $10 B. $20 C. $16 D. $0 My answer is A...but I'm not completely sure. #2 - When Bonds was injured and not playing, a typical kayak store will rent out _____. A. Three kayaks B. Four kayaks C. Five kayaks D. Zero kayaks My Answer: A - 3 kayaks#3 - Suppose that the graph below shows the marginal cost (MC) and average total cost (ATC) curves for a typical perfectly competitive kayak store. Consider the (short-run) effects of Bonds' injury on kayak rentals. If you believe that the typical kayak store earns economic profit during this time, use the blue rectangle (circle symbols) to shade the area that represents economic profit. If you believe that the typical kayak store suffers economic loss during this time, use the red rectangle (cross symbols) to shade the area that represents economic loss. This is my own graph with the economic loss: http://i34.tinypic.com/2v82yr6.jpg ^Is this right or would it be an economic profit instead?#4 - Bonds did not announce that he would be playing again until the beginning of September. What do you think happened to the kayak industry during his long absence? Consider the number of firms in the industry. A. Industry supply increased to a level higher than S1. B. Demand increased back to its initial level. C. Industry supply remained at S1. D. Industry supply decreased from S1 to S2. Resolved Question: Hows my essay citation? How should I end it?

The Most Fit Choice Introduction/Overview of Institutions The act of choosing an appropriate college that suits the needs of an individual is a very ambiguous yet tremendously important process that those striving ahead must go through. As times go by more and more options are becoming available for the public making it more difficult for one to settle quickly and smoothly at an institution but also presenting further opportunities to narrow down one’s choices and figure out the most ideal institution to attend. Among the myriad of post secondary academic establishments across the world, Stanford University and University of California, Davis caught my attention in a much exalted manner. Both of these institutions are very well known for their medical programs and specific criteria of admission along with many other important aspects. And although each university differs greatly from the other in areas such as tuition and enrollment, they still have many things in common such as their campus environment and extracurricular activities. Yet with all their superb aspects and minor personal flaws, both candidates turn out to be an excellent institution with many wonderful benefits across the path for any student looking into them. In the following passages Stanford University and UC Davis will be evaluated and compared against each other in various fields of interest ranging from location to tuition and financial aid. The Information and Findings Location and campus environment are very important factors that should be considered when deciphering through different college choices. For the residents of California, Stanford University and UC Davis are both fine choices to consider attending, for they are both located in California with not much more than a few hours drive in between and to cities all across California. According to their website, “Stanford is located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of the Silicon Valley…with an 8,180 acres reach from the rural foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the bustling Stanford shopping center in Palo Alto,” a description deserving much approval as far as beauty and natural scenery go. In contrast, UC Davis settles within the core of the Central Valley and is close to the San Francisco bay area as well as downtown Sacramento which holds the State Capital and many other eventful state businesses (“UC Davis”). And regarding one’s personal interests, this is important to consider since some may be more in favor of nature than industry. The institutions are alike however in the fact that their actual campuses are both in small town suburban areas, an aspect that presents a question of transportation (“College Board”). Stanford is a campus in which the most popular manner of commuting lies in biking (“Stanford”). There is even a mile long, palm tree lined entrance to the enormous campus that branches off into seventy eight diverse residential factories, over thirty libraries and a countless amount of even more beautiful campus buildings (“Stanford”). In addition to biking, and the campus’ exceeding of 12,000 bicycle parking spaces, Stanford also offers a shuttle system and Zipcar (“Stanford”). These are very beneficial characteristics when considering such a large campus. But on the smaller side, UC Davis is also an institution in which biking is of the highest popularity when it comes to commuting around campus to the many noted establishments such as an arboretum and an equestrian center (“UC Davis”). On the subject of housing, while Stanford offers a profuse amount of options ranging from coed dorms to language and ethnic themed houses, UC Davis, justifiably doesn’t have as many choices being merely a 5,200 acre campus (The Princeton Review). Stanford however, being the highly prestigious private university that it is, understandably comes with more and better options for its students, whereas UC Davis, although still highly respected, doesn’t offer the same quality or amount of housing or campus benefits as Stanford. These are essentials to one’s vital consideration of institutions regarding campus environment and location. In addition to geography and campus climate, admissions and requirements are also very ponderable concepts for a student to look into. As far as competition goes, there is no question as to the fact that Stanford exceeds a myriad of institutions across the nation in the area of acceptance. The average GPA of the most recent year’s statistics of acceptance was 3.75 and higher, not to mention that 91% of the admitted students were in the top 10% of their class and achieved very high honorable scores in a range of 660-760 on sections of standardized testing (“College Board”). Such students deserve the utmost accreditation when it comes to approval, and being more or less of the minority, are accepted by Stanford on very strict terms. These requisites that Stanford looks into range from personal qualities to the rigor of one’s secondary school record (The Princeton Review). But on a more compassionate level, Stanford cares more about a student’s success in a rigorous course rather than the amount of them that they took (“Stanford”). In contrast, UC Davis doesn’t demand the same level of success among students and their process of admission is much more simpler seeing as to the fact that students merely have to meet one out of three sets of eligibility requirements (“UC Davis”). In fact, out of the 22,333 students who applied to Stanford last year, only 11% were admitted and 67% were enrolled (The Princeton Review). And in comparison to UC Davis, these statistics immensely differ in quantity. In 2007 UC Davis admitted 68% of their 32,635 applicants and enrolled a mere 25% of them (The Princeton Review). The percentages of acceptance and enrollment between the two schools depict the very fact that those who qualify for a more prestigious and difficult institution to get into are much more determined and driven to ultimately attend the specific college of their desires and needs, whereas those who apply to a more broad amount of colleges simply to widen their options and are less qualified for prominent universities act more leniently and not as ambitious in their decision to attend a particular school. Each individual contemplating their college needs is relatively obligated to pay close attention to the degrees and academic programs offered by their institutions. And while almost all known institutions offer the basic Bachelors, Doctoral, Masters and other degrees, Stanford and UC Davis have many special study options. Both universities offer selections like double major programs, honors programs, and independent study internships, aspects important to look into considering the fact that both schools are very prestigious in their medical programs (The Princeton Review). According to their website, Stanford is very determined to fostering skilled and successful medical practitioners, for “candidates who have demonstrated to the satisfaction of their department or school substantial scholarship [and have a] high attainment in a particular field of knowledge and ability to do independent research and present the results…” are granted highly esteemed degrees in a vast range of medical programs. Not far behind lays UC Davis with four honorable colleges of study ranging from biological sciences to engineering, and five different professional schools to choose from (“UC Davis”). Among Stanford’s seven distinct and highly impressive schools lies their School of Medicine which offers over 29 diverse areas of specific medical study ranging anywhere from psychiatry to neurosurgery (“Stanford”). And UC Davis, also being a predominant institution of medicine offers over 26 distinct areas of medical study (“UC Davis”). This displays the fact that both schools attain many options of education in the medical field all of which are highly respected and rigorously taken out. However while UC Davis is one of the most major medical institutions noted across the nation like Stanford, Stanford holds the honor of having a much more ample amount of prestigious study in many different fields as well. These characteristics are very important for a student to look into when considering what school to attend based on their academic needs. On the subject of extracurricular activities, one may not consider them to be very crucial to their ultimate selection if they don’t happen to be an athlete or very active in clubs, however, sports and student organizations truly do play a rather important role. Brandon Barrette, a graduate currently attending UC Davis suggests the fact that it is a good idea to “get involved [in activities] when you are an undergrad. It’s a great way to make friends and great stress relief!” And while one may not believe this to be entirely important or true upon college consideration, it is undeniably beneficial to know that one has so many options for extracurricular activities. UC Davis offers 26 different men’s and women’s sports teams including a vast variety of intramural traditional team sports along with many nontraditional activities as well (“UC Davis”). In comparison, Stanford offers over 21 different sports teams ranging from football to water polo (“Stanford”). And while both schools are closely related in sports, Stanford offers many different summer sport camps and recreational summer clubs and programs in which some are conveniently, not exclusive to Stanford students (“Stanford”). Having sports offered at a school is important even if one knows that they definitely won’t be participating as an athlete, for knowing that there are all these games to be played and competitions to be fought in gives a student the comfortable assurance that there will be something major to rally around campus, something to keep them excited for their years to come. And besides sports, both schools offer a plethora of clubs and student organizations. Stanford offers 28 esteemed sororities and fraternities along with a diverse range of creative art programs and academic clubs (“Stanford”). Similarly, UC Davis has over 364 registered organizations and 49 sororities and fraternities along with 50 religious organizations and an honor society (The Princeton Review). This suggests that both schools believe that extracurricular activities are rather important and necessary enough to include as a major field of activity among their institutions in harmony with their output of education, an aspect worthy of consideration when it comes to personal interests regarding one’s level of rigorous academic focus. As all the mentioned aspects of college features are to a certain extent, equally important, one of the most predominant factors that students look into when choosing their post secondary school is tuition and financial aid. In all probability, not every family can support their child financially when it comes to college. And not to mention, inevitably, prices and difficulties are simply rising as time goes on. But due to such fate, more help is becoming available for students all over the nation through means of scholarships, grants and loans and whatnot. Last year Stanford’s total price for tuition and other fees such as room and board and books and supplies was at a high $51,430 per year (“Stanford”). UC Davis on the other hand, peaked at nearly less than half of Stanford, at a total of $25,754 (“UC Davis”). At first glace, this suggests that Stanford has a lot more to offer through its institution than UC Davis, however from what has been mentioned, both schools are very close in the things they present. Yet there are many ways that a student can financially support themselves as well. Stanford in fact, has special programs that provide tuition grant awards to students based on their financial need and high school status (“Stanford”). Its process of granting financial aid becomes ultimately very beneficial for, students can are fairly judged on their household income and can usually receive the majority of what they are expected to pay through academic yearly earnings, federal and state grants, and university scholarships, things of which are gifted aid and do not need to be paid back (“Stanford”). And UC Davis, although not coming with nearly the same price tag as Stanford, has many financial aid options as well. UC Davis offers campus wide scholarships in which students apply for with simple high school qualifications and are very likely to receive; the school is even very personal and offers specific scholarships such as the Iranian Alumni Association Scholarship that supports students needing financial and of Iranian descent (“UC Davis”). Based on Peterson’s website of colleges and universities, the average indebtedness a student has upon graduation at Stanford is about $16,728 and at UC Davis is $14,372. And with the knowledge that Stanford has a much heftier charge, the fact that those figures don’t differ much suggests that Stanford is a lot more efficient in granting students with enough aid to support them more proficiently throughout their years than UC Davis. In fact Stanford’s average percent of financial need met among students was at 100%, while UC Davis’ was at 77% (“Colleges and Universities”). This concept carries much importance in the long run, knowing that a student could receive a relatively better and far more prestigious education at one institution than another, while still reasonably spending the same amount of money. The Significance of the Findings/Conclusion The facts and analysis discussed above have come to be really compelling in my opinion in relation to how important it is to know what I want out of academics. It opened my eyes to realizing against the stereotype that all colleges merely want profit from their consumers. I became a lot more open minded after performing my research, realizing that an institution with a lot less prestige can and usually is almost or just as beneficial, as in I can still receive a wonderful education anchored towards my goals from a place that may not be as large or as prominent. My confidence level also rose up quite a bit, resting assured that so far I have undeniably exceeded college expectations and met most standards. This suggests that all I have to do is keep going on the same track to success to achieve my goals regarding attending college. All in all however, I still believe that Stanford University is a better institution as far as my options go. I feel that in attending Stanford I will be placing myself on a much higher level of success and subsequently furthering and improving my chances of becoming all that I can be career wise. The details of admission and competition among both schools that I found, made me realize how important it was to peak myself in a well balanced schedule in high school and to thrive in everything I do. Before conducting my research, I didn’t fully comprehend the fact that it wouldn’t always matter what my GPA was for a certain semester or how many difficult classes I took, but rather how well I did in everything that I executed in my life. I know I will irrefutably have the need to perform more research like this in the future, and upon such occurrence I would most likely make sure I fully understood and knew about all my options before I came to any conclusions about them. I would also ensure that I’d have enough time to fully execute such a project to its fullest potential. In general however, this project and the information I found due to it in the end was very beneficial and helpful in furthering my knowledge of two universities that I was highly interested in. more
