Open Question: Teen that needs help loosing weight! Help?

I am almost 15, and really want to be a model. It seems like the only thing holding me back is my weight. I want this more then anything, and really need some help! I exercise a lot (I'm a dancer), drink only water ( 8-12 glasses a day), take vitamins, and have always eaten healthy. Sometimes I have to eat fast food because of my family's busy schedule, but I have been trying to order healthier meals when I can. I also do the P90X workouts whenever I can. I am in pretty good shape I guess, but not good enough. I'm not just some stupid over dramatic little teenager that is obsessed with being skinnier then everyone else, I'm actually pretty mature for my age. I am so close to making my way into the modeling industry, and loosing this weight will give me the edge I need. I am 5'10, and weigh 140 lbs. Before summer, I only weighed 130. I guess the sitting around at home really took its toll on me, but I also went through a growth spurt. I want to get back to my weight at 130, and maybe even down to 125. 125 may be too drastic and sickly looking, so my main goal is to lose 10 lbs. I feel like there isn't a way to lose this weight. All those fad diets just turn your body on itself and make you lose muscle, which I have spent years building up (and DON'T want to lose). It seems like the only way to lose the weight is with anorexia..but that is terribly unhealthy...please help more

Resolved Question: What are my options if I cant ever land a job because of a background check?

So I have always worked at a restaurant job since I was 17 (now 22), But recently I quit my last casual fast-food job due to management disputes. Recently I thought I would rather work lets say retail or a different industry, but remembered they always do extensive background checks. So I apply like at Target or Sears or whatever. I either go through the interview and in the end its just like "we would love to hire you but, your background check doesn't pass." Or right off the bat its like nope sorry your a "criminal" So my question(s) is other than a restaurant, what are my other options here? Where do I turn to? What do I do now? Not to mention with this economy even restaurant jobs are not always there! A little background on my situation: I have only had misdemeanors for weed possession, underage drinking and/or possession of alcohol by minor, drunk in public, and a 2 year old misdemeanor battery. Which by the way was wrong place at the wrong time situation! I never resort to violence, but a fight broke out at a kick back I got jumped so I defended myself. Cops came and took control but I was charged with misdemeanor battery. Long story short I had to plea guilty, so I don't do much time. I live in orange county by the way Now that I look back those where all stupid youth things I did but do take responsibility!! Did what was order to do and been a better person since. But to corporations/employers; a piece of paper or digital information comes up telling them I am a "CRIMINAL" so what am I suppose to do?! I'm not a criminal!! I just want a decent job and move on but how is a "criminal" suppose to earn a decent living if society is always keeping me down!? Thanks for taking time to hear me out people!! =D I'm just frustrated with this job hunt and how society keeps us/me down after being labeled. All answer's are appreciated and Information!! :) Thanks again!! and God Bless more

Open Question: Is there a better excuse for businesses?

Many businesses (not all) are deemed as somewhat immoral. I agree with this statement, but not quite in the extreme as I will describe it. Anyhow: Some businesses, such as those mentioned in Fast Food Nation, sold soda to toddlers, disregarding the vulnerability of a child's developing dental health or health in general. Other businesses, such as those "mass produce" types - apparel, soda, and electronics - abuse the "free market" enterprise and resort to "out-sourcing" (or such term): Using cheap labor overseas to make millions, without regarding the health conditions or "giving a @#$%" about the employees - who are often very destitute and are desperate. Additionally, in Fast Food Nation, the meatpacking industry especially takes special measures to prevent the government from interfering with their "business" - which is denying adequate health care or working environment to its employees. Without the Child Labor Laws and such, today, businesses would probably still be working 6-year old children (and younger) 15+ hours a day, paying them perhaps a dollar or two an hour - given the opportunity. (Exaggerated, but highly possible). Long story short: Businesses, if given the opportunity, will pay workers an incredibly low salary, salaries probably beyond inadequacy to support oneself, and deny proper or decent working conditions. Essentially, like slave labor, except with a little pay. Many people complain about this, but some argue that " a business is doing what it's suppose to do - make money." Similarly, "It's their business, let them be." In an extremist view: Businesses are immoral, greedy organizations bent only on making money. Not all businesses are like this, but most are. They (the immoral ones) will often behave to a point before illegal"ness" to maximize profit: in other words, go as far as they can go before getting in trouble, although some will break the rules. Their only excuse is: We're only out to make money, that's what we're made for - that's what businesses do. An example: Hitmen businesses or drug dealerships - killing people and selling things that destroy the body and "mentally cripple" somewhat innocent children, also abuse children as drug traffickers. But after all, they are just "doing what they're suppose to do: make money." Indeed, is this a reasonable excuse to do such things? -------------------------------------- Honestly, is there another "valid" excuse or reason to supply to this immoral act? If so, please state it.Quite long I know, but I wanted to add some "additional/background" information to spark insight amongst readers. more

Voting Question: Why isn't there a rolling minimum wage?

A minimum wage that is dependent on the industry and the business. For example the minimum wage for fast food would be different from a construction job. Employers circumvent this by employing illegal immigrants or blackmarket deals but if the gov't used a rolling minimum wage that might be an incentive to hire legal workers. The other part of this is a wage that shifts based on profits. So if you are a small business owner and make X amount in profit or lose X amount then you qualify for a $5.00 minimum but if next year you make Y amount then you automatically bump up in the next tier and you are required to pay a minimum of $7.00. It might seem unfair that under this system a janitor working for McDonald's would make $5.00 an hour while a janitor doing the same work for Microsoft makes $50.00 an hour but honestly wouldn't it be better to have a low paycheck than no paycheck? Anyway I'm sure someone has thought of this before and I'm wondering why they don't do it this way? There should be a whole agency just for this. I would call it the Low-skilled and Underemployed Wage Protection Agency. LUWPAI agree with all of you. In a free market there should be no minimum wage laws. But that doesn't change the fact that they are there and aren't going away. I don't think any politician would dare say that minimum wage should be abolished and expect to get any votes or support from unions. more

Resolved Question: How often do you eat out?

And how often do you cook a meal from fresh ingredients? Or are most of your meals processed (from a box, bag, can, etc...)? What is your favorite fruit or vegetable? Favorite fast food restaurant? I've been reading Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation and I've become really curious about this. If you aren't familiar with it, it is an amazing book about the dirty business of the food industry...which may sound incredibly boring to someone not at all concerned about their consumption, but it's very entertaining and well written. The Book (2001) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Food_Nation The Movie (2006) *NOTE: the movie is a drama BASED ON the book, the book has the goods* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc_z623Wsro more

Voting Question: Psycho roommate/best friend...?

WARNING: LONG READ BUT THE ULTIMATE IN CRAZY My best friend and I have known each other for the last 12-13 years. We grew up like brothers. The only real difference between us is he's gay, I'm straight. And I've always accepted him for who he was. EARLY 20's When we were both in college, a bunch of our friends and us moved into a house. Since we all were so close, we shared everything without an issue. Everything was fairly amicable until one night he showed up in my room and begged me to fool around with him. I was shocked, spent 2 hours trying to let him down easy, and tried to be cool about it afterwards. For months he'd make little comments and try to push the issue, which finally caused us to fight about it, he ended up moving back home and we ended up not talking for a year. Eventually we started talking, he apologized, and I forgave him for not being accepting of me. I was just happy to have my bro back. MID 20's We both work in the same industry and he hooked me up with a job in his company. It was cool and proved to be a stepping stone for me to move on to a really amazing company. My career grew, I did really well, and I ended up moving into an apartment on my own. My best friend kept complaining about living with his parents, I felt bad for him, so we talked about getting an apartment together. We ended up moving in together with the agreement it would be for 2 years, as we both expected it to be a useful stepping stone to save up for the future. The problem was he would always complain about not having money, and not moving ahead. So I got him a job with my company. I was at a higher level, but it was a much better oppurtunity for him. BAD IDEA. LATE 20's Fast forward to 3 years later. I intended to move out a year earlier, but didn't because he told me he was having an issue saving up because of some bills. He makes as much as me, we have the same amount of debt, yet I was always throwing down more. Buying groceries, buying household products, etc. I would say something to him and he would buy it, but then slip back into the habit of trying to get me to pay for everything. Keep in mind, for the last 10 years I've spent thousands helping this kid out. Covering him when he was short on rent, or covering him when we were all out partying. He would always play the "I'm poor" card, and since I don't think money matters much I didn't really care. It was only when I noticed I had brought all the groceries for 3 months straight did I confront him and tell him that wasn't right. He admitted he did have money and he used it to party, shmooze with people, etc. I was POed because here I was thinking he needed help and he was using me. We argued and he promised to be better. Even still though, he would help himself to all the booze and beer I buy without even offering to buy any, replace it, throw down or get any himself. I've dealt with him talking trash behind my back with my co-workers and friends (they tell me), I've dealt with him telling people secrets I rather not become public, of him being jealous I am at a higher level, of him being a cheapskate, etc. Because when our lease was up, I'd move back out on my own. Why make a big deal about it? Well now he started flipping out as our move out date nears. It's a month away now and for the last 4 months he's been extremely insecure and passive aggressive. He would pick fights with me, try to bait me into arguments, would complain and accuse me of ignoring him (I'd be busy at work or living my life?), just spiralled downward into a mess. I tried talking to him but he'd lock himself in his room, come out only to drink my beer or eat my food, then hide in his room again. I finally asked him to start throwing down on the beer and booze he was packing away and he had the gall to act indignent like I was just supposed to buy him everything. NOW He acted out at work, tried to get his boss (and another friend of mine) fired because he thought it would open up more chances for him because there was a "big conspiracy" to keep him down. They had to move him to a corner position away from his old team because they were disgusted with the way he was acting. He would start snapping at me when I ask simple questions or do innocent things. I finally got so annoyed that I just stopped trying to talk to him and focused on my own life. I started seeing a girl that I liked and going out more, hanging out with other friends. He snapped even more. Started getting jealous of what I was doing and who I was with. He'd never come out when invited, but always make up some conspiracy over why I'm an evil person. He started making assumptions about me and talking to anyone who would here. He even tweets it, there is an actual rolling updates on how much he hates me and how he is going to bring me dowdown, which he shares with everyone I know. "I think you're a joke"... "Liar, liar, liar"... "Even my doctor laughed at you". He called one of my oldest friends to try and convince him that I am evil. My other friend incidentally thinks he's lost it and reamed him out. We both suspect he either still has feelings for me, thought I would live with him til he was 80, or can't deal with his miserable life. The problem is he's crazy AND vindictive. He called the girl I was hanging out with and freaked her out to the point where she stopped talking to me. At home he locks himself in his room and blares music/TV at maximum volume. He blares music till 4AM. He loops gay porn over and over and blares it loudly. Keep in mind, a family with little kids lives across the hall. He's finally had "enough" of me and my unwillingness to deal with his crazy and is moving out next week. I will have the apartment to myself for a month before I have to move myself. more

Resolved Question: Is this a phase or should I kick him?

So I'm about to scream. When I met my boyfriend, he was a hardworking guy who knew how to take care of himself and his responsibilities. I loved that. We were still in college, and he went to class full time and had a full time job. Then after a year, we got an apartment together and he said over and over again how much he loves providing for me and being able to take care of me (even though I'm a bit feminist and have my own earnings... he's more the traditional guy). Then graduation happened a year following our move in and we both got grown up jobs in our field's of choice. Everything was going so well. And then suddenly, within a matter of a few short months... the following occurred: - He moved out of our apartment. I actually encouraged this because he couldn't make his half of rent and it was cheaper for me to support just myself instead of the two of us. - Instead of moving in with his friend, he returned to his parents basement.. fine, whatever, this happens occasionally. - He quits his job. NO reason. He just "didn't like going". - He announced that buying an engagement ring was a "waste of his money", but it is perfectly fine to spend his meager earnings on beer and fast food? (p.s. he's the worst saver. THE worst. I'd dare you to find a person who is equally bad at saving money. It's infuriating). - He has not made attempts to get another job. He just sits in his parents basement and festers. His great life plan is to be an assistant manager at a McDonald's. Call me snobby, but This seems to be a huuuuge step backwards considering he just spent four years' of tuition trying to get OUT of the fast food industry. What I'm asking is: Is this some creepy phase that he's going through? I'd like to believe he's just afraid of being a real grown man, but I'm also not one to wait around for a fellow to get off his ass. He asks me for money sometimes, and after he quit his job I told him "hell no", if he wants money that badly he can go out and find himself some employment. So guys... Is this a real thing? Or is he just being a lazy jerk who needs to get his ass kicked into gear??? more

Resolved Question: How to lose 10-15 lbs fast?!?

It's close to the end of summer, and I gained 10 lbs. At the start of summer, I wanted to lose 5 lbs already. So, I now want to lose 15 lbs, and have no idea how! I am a dancer, and dance every day. I eat generally very healthy, but sometimes I have to eat fast food): I drink TONS of water every day, and do P90X occasionally. I keep trying to wake up early and go running before dance practice, but I'm always too tired. I'm really close to getting into the modeling industry, and really need to lose this weight, preferably in a short amount of time. I wouldn't consider myself overweight, but losing 15 lbs would give me the edge I need to become a model, and would also raise my self confidence a TON. Any tips? Thanks!By dance I mean drill team, with daily practices of about 2 and a half hours, so thats some good cardio. And I LOVE vegetables and water, oh and green tea. I don't want to do any fad diets or stop eating, those make your body eat up your muscle (which I have worked hard to aquire). I am lenient on how long it takes me to lose the weight, but the faster the better. more

Voting Question: what do you think of these papers for my ap classes?

I had to write 2 papers: one for AP English and one for AP environmenal science. Here's one for Environmental. It's a summary on the book Fast Food Nation. I did not like Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. It was not a bad book, it was just a very difficult book for me to get into and enjoy. I was just disappointed because I thought that the book would have gruesome, horrible details about the food and how it is served not about how the fast food industry took away from the stay-at-home family dinners. I would recommend this book to a person who was looking for a journalistic view point on a subject; especially if they wanted to know more about the fast food industry. The part of the book that really struck me and caught my attention was the chapter entitled What’s in the Meat, when Schlosser was discussing E. coli. Before reading this I assumed that E. coli was just food poisoning that eventually went away with some antibiotics; I never knew that the disease could possibly be life threatening. When I read the stories about Beth Rudolf and Alex my jaw practically dropped to the floor and when I realized that they both had such horrendous deaths at the mere age of six. Beth, suffered from three heart attacks, but it was Alex’s story that struck a chord with me. The six year old had bloody diarrhea, holes were drilled into his skull in an effort to relieve pressure, tubes were inserted into his chest to help with his breathing because Shiga toxins were destroying his organs, towards the end of his life he suffered from hallucinations and dementia, he couldn’t even recognize his own parents, and part of his brain had been ‘liquefied.’ He was dead less than a week of catching the disease. I was also appalled when I found out that in most contaminated meat there is no recall; the FDA just informs the company but there is no national recall to inform the customers. After reading that I did not want to eat any fast food meat; it was a definite eye opener for me. To be honest, I have no idea what this has to do with Environmental Science. Here's one for English. It's about The Open Boat; I had to connect the theme and the setting. The relationship between the setting and the theme is loneliness and insignificance. One of the theme’s of the book is about man’s insignificance in the universe. During the book, each man comes to the conclusion that they are insignificant in the universe and have no control of what happens in their own lives and there is also an underlining fear of nothingness. If one is stranded in the ocean they have no control as to what will happen to them; it is almost as if they are ‘insignificant’ to their own surroundings. Also, if you were lost at sea you would not experience a more domination feeling than loneliness; you would probably experience such loneliness when one realized that they meant nothing to the universe. These are just rough drafts and I plan to go back and to fix and add things to them. The one for science isn't really a summary. I had to answer certain questions. more

Resolved Question: Can you help me fix my thesis?

The fast food industry reveals the selfish motives of the younger culture by demonstrating how the culture is made up of insatiable individuals, and it represents the impatient and competitive view of our past and present generations. I don't like the part where i put "our past and present generations" can you help me re-word that? My essay is about how fast food is a part of our younger culture more

Resolved Question: Can you help fix my paragraph?

The impatience of our nation is manifested in one of the most hazardous [places] created by fast food industries. Since the arrival of fast food, the meat industry has become less safe. Since the demand on food is always high, the food industry has become a “battle-field” for many companies, causing a great competition. The contemporary business world reveals that demand always results in the corresponding supply. The machinery and automation within the industry has been said to optimize efficiency, enhance financial wealth, and to minimize waste, all of which increases the profit margin for many corporations within the business. So i was wondering what would be a better word for "places" in my first sentence? That sentence is used as a transition The next paragraph basically talks about how the industry has created fast-paces machinery and how its detrimental for factory workers. more

I'm writing an essay about the fast food industry and how it has caused many damaging effects on our younger culture. I was thinking about a "hook" with a quote about how humans have always wanted to take the short cut and that we like the convenience of fast food, even though its damaigng. more

Resolved Question: Vegan working in fast food restaurant (whataburger)?

I am a vegan who is extremely passionate about animal rights. I hate the meat industry basically. However, at the same time, I rescue animals off the streets and also am involved in trap/neutering/releasing feral/stray cats. This is VERY expensive. I need at least 200 dollars saved up to TNR cats every month and their food is like 100 dollars (I feed 20+ cats everyday). I have two of my own cats who I *HAVE* to save up money for if they have medical emergencies. Basically I don't even need a job as I am a poor college student and live with my parents who cover all expenses except for what I do for animals. I work solely for the purpose of taking care of animals. And honestly, I need a job within 10 days - I HAVE to have one, otherwise the cats will go starving as I only have food left for 10 more days. I believe I can get a job at whataburger because i know the manager. I would feel extremely guilty working there and would probably be way better off not working there at all as there would be a lot of emotional distress. However, do you think it's worth it considering the fact that 20+ cats depend on me, there's more feral/stray cats to trap/neuter/return, have to feed the 20+ cats, my own cats and also provide medical attention to any of these animals (and believe me, my cats are always having some type of ear problems or any simple medical emergency all the time which requires money) What do you think? Ethical or not ethical? Sigh. more

Resolved Question: Tell me, what am I doing wrong?

I've been applying for a part time job since the end of my sophomore year, that was 2 years ago. I have only gotten two interviews. Neither of them lead to anything more. Every time I fill out an application I always have to leave the employment history blank. I've never had a job before so I have to leave this blank. Which I feel is my biggest set back. But someone has to hire first timers! My friends have had jobs since their sophomore year, and it was like their first application. I've been looking for two years! I need to find work because I have to help pay for college since I have no loans or scholarships. And I have to pay my own cell phone bill and car insurance. Please tell me, what am I doing wrong? No one is hiring in my city (I've looked everywhere)! I've gone outside my comfort zone to the fast food industry and still nothing. I've applied to places that are hiring and can't even get an interview. And I've talked to my friends who have hired people and they say a bad thing to do is to keep calling back about the application. They say it's annoying. So what am I supposed to do? I listed in skills that I have worked a cash register (not a cash box at a concession stand) one with buttons. I don't want to lie on my application, because they can find out and then I could get fired. more

Resolved Question: Can someone please give feedback?

it's an essay of who's responsible for obesity in america... need help concluding America, Home of the Fat America, home of the free right? Wrong. America is one of the fattest nations in the world. We would think that one of the most productive and developed countries would be the healthiest. The truth however, is we are not. The question that is presented then, is who’s to blame? People always find it easier to point a finger and blame someone else. Americans are suing fast-food companies for “making them fat”, and such lawsuits are becoming more prevalent each day. Blaming the fast-food industry for obesity is like an alcoholic suing an alcohol company for giving them cirrhosis of the liver. Caesar Barber of Bronx, New York “filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Bronx Supreme Court, naming McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken” (<www.usatoday>) because he didn’t it was unhealthy. What has happened, to self control and personal responsibility? The individual and the parents are the ones to blame for American’s obesity. It is a parent’s responsibility to care for their child and therefore they are also responsible for their health and what they consume. A parent would not let their child do drugs, so why do they allow them to overindulge on soft drinks and unhealthy food if they both harm your health. In The Battle Against Fast Food Begins At Home Daniel Weintraub states, “It is a parents – not the government, not the fast-food companies, not the video-game manufacturers – who are responsible for teaching kids healthy eating and exercising habits” (Weintraub42). Parents much teach children how to how to exercise and get involved in physical activities. If they fail to do so they are setting their children on a path of lifetime health problems. Many parents allow and approve their child’s sedentary behavior without thinking about the consequences. Eating junk food and playing video games everyday is not benefiting them in any way, and who is responsible to get them off the couch and shooting hoops? McDonalds, Burger King, Carl’s Jr, Jack in The Box? No, of course not. It is parent’s duty as the one who cares for the child. Some people may think companies lure kids into buying food with cartoons, truth is parents need to teach children how to look out for these marketing strategies companies use because that is something they will need to know when it comes to important choices in life, like choosing auto insurance, credit companies and so forth. If children obesity An adult individual unlike a child can make independent decisions but Americans often make the wrong decisions when it comes to managing their diets. A trip to the market could save you money an unneeded calorie intake. You can cook your own meals and know what you’re eating and manage your caloric intake but Americans simply have become addicted to fast- food, and it is their lack of discipline that has made them so obese. Sue Widemark conveys in her article Reason for Obesity, that an attitude Americans seem to have is that of “Eating is some kind of pastime…and if we feel that we are denied a bit of this fatty and very unhealthy food which we crave, that we have no quality of life” (Widemark1). Folks simply do not know when enough is enough. In Obesity Epidemic: Overeating is to Blame Mark Fergusson explains “To return to the average weights of the 1970’s we would need to reverse the increased food intake about… 500 calories a day for adults.” An individual has nothing to blame but their carelessness of what they eat and their deficiency of self-control when it comes to how much they eat. Fast-food would not make anyone obese if it was eaten in moderation. Everyone knows that too much of anything is bad. David Zinczenko in his article Don’t Blame The Eater argues that when it comes to food “Advertisements Don’t carry warning labels the way tobacco ads do” but when do Americans plan on becoming responsible for looking for this information? Certainly people who follow healthy lifestyles would ask for calorie information about what they are going to consume and the rest must learn to do the same. Over-eating is definitely a main factor of American obesity. Now, combine A lifestyle of daily fast-food and inactive behavior and you are well on your way to becoming obese. A person, who is not willing to stay active and yet, constantly eats fast food, cannot expect to be thin. Your body needs exercise not only to look good on the outside but to be healthy on the inside as well. No one neglect their body in a way that would damage their health, but that is exactly what they do when they gorge on greasy fries and soft drinks and do not exercise. Michael Lemonick in his article “How We Grew So Big” writes that “Fully two-thirds of US adults are officially overweight and half of those have graduated to full blown obesity” he  more

Resolved Question: slaughterhouse-animal cruelty what you should know before buying meat products from supermarkets?

ladies and gentlemen do you ever wonder how cattle and other animals are treated before being slaughter? i once read something that involved sick cows that was devastating... here i posted it some of the meat was destined for use in school lunches. The undercover footage, obtained by the Humane Society of the United States, shows workers kicking crippled cows, spraying them with water and using electric shocks, trucks and chains to force the cattle to walk and pass USDA inspection. An animal-abuse investigation has been launched at the plant, the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company, based in Chino, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, and two of its employees have been charged with animal cruelty. Much of the meat subject to the recall has already been eaten but agriculture officials said there was little health risk because the animals had passed pre-slaughter inspection. They added that the parts of cows most likely to contain mad cow disease or BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), the spinal cords and brains, are not used so would not have entered the food chain. No illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled meat. Nevertheless, the video prompted widespread concern about the use of so-called "downer cows" - animals unable to walk - which the federal government has banned from the food supply because they could pose a higher risk of contamination from E.coli, salmonella or BSE since they typically wallow in faeces and have weaker immune systems. The Humane Society said the use of "downer cows" was tantamount to playing Russian roulette with people's health. "This unacceptable cruelty potentially puts the food supply at risk - at least 12 of the 15 identified cases of mad cow disease in North America to date have reportedly been downers," it said. All types of meat from sirloin to ground beef have been recalled along with by-products of the industry such as salivary glands and vats of beef bile. The recall covers beef produced since February 2006 and distributed nationwide to wholesalers for use in products such as burrito filling, meatballs and sausage. Most of the beef was sent to distribution centers in bulk packages and was not sold directly to the public, the USDA said. Hallmark/Westland sold at least 37 million pounds of meat for school lunches nationwide and other nutrition programmes, including for the poor and the elderly. Several school districts have since removed beef from their lunch menus as they suspect it came from Hallmark/Westland. Two fast-food chains, Jack-In-the-Box and In-N-Out, said they would no longer use beef from the plant. Kenneth Petersen, of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the USDA, stressed "we think the food supply is safe" but added the recall was important and showed parents "that the schools are taking action to put those products on hold". Some legislators, however, criticised the USDA, saying the federal agency should conduct more rigorous inspections to ensure tainted beef was not getting to the public. Advocacy groups echoed these concerns, noting the problems at Westland would not have complease think about it before buying meatthese people might have been caught and charged but what about the other slaughterhouses that abuse animals? they haven't been caught because their sneeky.... more

Resolved Question: Is the FOODSAFE Certificate required for all food-related occupations in Alberta?

In Toronto, ON, there's a municipal by-law that requires the Food Handler's Certificate for workers in the food industries. Most employers even prefer this Certificate for dishwashers, fast food counter attendants, and workers in a food manufacturing plant. In Alberta do workers in these occupations also require either the FOODSAFE or Mini Food Safety Certificate? Would a Food Handler's Certificate from Toronto be valid for work in Alberta? more

Resolved Question: What is the best fast food restaurant to work for?

I need a part time job to do while I'm finishing up my college degree. I'm running out of options and I'm mentally preparing myself to resort to the fast food industry. I need to know what fast food restaurant chain (preferably ones in the North-East of the U.S.) is the least miserable to work for. For example: McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, Panera Breads, KFC, Arby's, D'Angelos, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway, Dunkin' Donuts. I'd appreciate anyone who wants to recommend, warn, share their experiences, horror stories, whatever. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: I really need advice on a new career, fast?

I need some advice on a career.  I am young (21) and have about 5 years experience in sales, customer service, obviously talking with people, tech savvy with pretty much everything and good with computers.  I'm great at leading and have a passion for music, food, being in charge of things, entertaining, hosting, etc. I also like sales but depending on the job I might be okay doing something other than sales.  I have the type of personality that everyone likes to be around and know how to have fun and be professional at the same time.  Currently I am in the insurance industry and want out of it forever.  I don't want to do anything that involves legal services, insurance, payment processing, banking or anything that is repetitive and boring enough for me to write a post like this for help again.  I would ideally like to have the type of work that makes a difference in something like a community, peoples lives, or maybe something as big as the world.  I truly feel I was born for doing something big or important and if I could do something along those lines, that would feel good and make me feel important.  If im not able to do that type of work then I am open to any type of recommendations or ideas to consider.  All of your help and time is appreciated.  I apologize this post took so long to read.  This is really a cry for help though and I can't tell employers how I feel so I am hoping to have some one give me some ideas on maybe what employers you think I would be a good fit for or positions you think I would be good at.  Please no scams.  I don't have time for fake offers/companies. Thank you so much for your time and response. more

Resolved Question: What stereotype(s) would you use to describe me, if any?

I dress extremely femininely on some days and in more gender-neutral clothes on others. My policy for dressing is whatever is clean or feels comfortable or is going to feel comfortable in the day's predicted weather, be that a frilly sundress or an old jean jacket, t-shirt, and old jeans. I have always loved stereotypical "girly" things, like Barbies and tea parties and princesses and ballet, and I never got a chance to experience a girly childhood in my actual childhood (as my parents wanted a fourth son, not a daughter). I never outgrew this once-denied side of myself. Because of this, though I was born female, I identify more with my MtF transgender friends than with other biological women on a number of emotional levels. I also have always loved agriculture (despite my allergies), animals like bats and rodents and - my favorite - snakes, camping, horror movies, thrill rides, and most sports, and I am not afraid of getting dirty. My way of speaking is very blunt and my sense of humor is dry. I'm snarky, and I'm also introspective and overly deep when there is no need to be. At the same time, I'm extroverted and want to experience as much out of life as possible. I love learning about cultures different from my own and experiencing new things firsthand, although craziness has a way of following me and many things I do end in disaster. I'm quick to pick myself up when I fall, and I fall often. I am notably maternal. I never forgot what it was like to be young and unwanted, and I seem to have a knack for understanding all types of kids. I love working with autistic kids in particular because I was (given my gender and extroverted disposition, the rarest type of) an autistic kid before anyone knew of high-functioning autism. I am American, but I can't stand McDonald's or other fast food industries. I am known to frequent immigrant-owned restaurants wherever I live. I have moved frequently. My career life has been a mess and I am often restless. I am usually a very lenient and laid-back person. I have a bad habit of letting other people have their way in everything because I don't want to be seen as the bad guy. I am a former anorexic, and now plus-sized in perimenopause. I'm extremely comfortable with and proud of my body, as far as its looks go. It helps to have a husband who thinks every inch of your body is awesome. This is nearly irrelevant to my personality, but I have facial features that are different from my ethnicity. (I am white, but I have plenty of African and Asian features despite my skin and bloodlines. Because of this alongside family problems and the fact that I never had the social advantages associated with my race, I never really identified with any race.) I run half-marathons to stay in shape and I hope to run a full marathon within the next five to ten years. I flip between sounding so serious that no one knows what to say and making people laugh within the same sentences. I also flip between overworking myself and being completely lazy. There are people who think that I speak in too intellectual of a tone, although I do not receive such reactions online nearly as often. This was not that organized of a spiel, and for that I apologize. Well, can you stereotype me? :) more

Resolved Question: How can I find a woman (whom is not a prostitute) that will have sex with me?

I am a 43 year old, slightly overweight, bearded American male whom, yes, does live with his mother. I do not live with my mother because I can not support myself, but because I have a very close relationship with her. I do have a job, but it is in the food industry. I work at McDonald's. I have little education and do not wish to further it. I have never been with a woman sexually whom I did not pay for these experiences. I believe that this is because of my housing and employment status. I am looking for not only a sexual relationship. but a companionship with a woman who is willing to live under me and follow my lead. I believe that men should be the head of the household and that women should do as he says. How can I find such a woman that is attractive, will have sex with me, will submit to me, and is accepting of the fact that I do not wish to work anywhere other than in the fast food industry? I also wish to continue living with my mother. I have considered mail order brides, but I do not want a foreign woman as their personal hygiene is not good and they only want money. more

Resolved Question: The American food industry?

I really feel like we need to do something about the American food industry. I just watched a documentary on it that just goes to show how shallow we American consumers can be. Everyday we are fooled into putting cheap, processed garbage down our throats and into our system. Not only that but we are supporting the very industries that are destroying our planet and way of life, making everything fast, cheap, and convenient. Even the stuff that's supposed to be healthy and wholesome is horrible and full of all sorts of diseases, some proven to be deadly and yet no one is doing anything about it. I'm really not much of an environmentalist, but this food is destroying American people with disease, obesity, laziness, and naivety. I know that someone reading this might be think that I'm some sort of weirdo tree hugger, but I think I'm more of a people hugger. If you don't seem to see just how bad and awful this situation is, you can watch the documentary, Food, Inc. instantly on Netflix. I promise you will be too horrified and astonished to be bored. You will see how the people working so hard against this are losing their rights. It's not just about the horrendous conditions the animals are living in, but how terrible the food industries are treating people too. I've never been so disgusted like this before. I believe, however, that we, the consumers, are the only ones who can bring these monsters to their knees. Help me help humanity at this site. http://www.takepart.com/foodinc Thank you so much! more

How do I turn my skills from fast food into skills for a unit secretary or ward clerk? I am trying to decide whether to try to get one now or wait the two months until I turn 18 to look because there would be many more opportunities. Resolved Question: Why does the US have both a huge weight loss industry and a junk food obsession at the same time?

In the US junk food is so socially acceptable and people eat it all the time and there are millions of fast food places, yet at the same time there's a huge weight loss industry. The two cancel each other out. If Americans weren't so obsessed with junk food then the weight loss industry wouldn't be making billions off of millions of people. more

Voting Question: Do you think its unfair that?

People who obsess over carbs, pounds, calories, etc. are now running the food industry in North America it seems. For people with fast metabolisms do you also find it unfair? The reason i bring this up is because it seems that a lot of the foods I used to enjoy have now gone exclusively healthy. General Mills cereals for instance, which i used to enjoy the way they are have mostly gone whole grain. It would make sense if they had the healthy option with the normal option but at the grocery stores that I have been shopping at they don't. Why can't we bring back the diet of the 80's or something. more

Voting Question: Has anyone else ever lost weight eating nothing but McDonald's and general fast food?

I work in the finance industry and my job requires me to work 6 days a week, sometimes 7 and 50 - 60 hours a week depending on many factors. I'm trying to save up money but gain weight while eating healthy. I go to the gym 4 days a week if I can while also studying for graduate school tests and volunteer work. I could barely cook 1 meal a day (have no time) but for lunch I tend to eat a lot of fast food. I'm actually losing weight, I lost 8 pounds in 6 weeks trying to gain weight. Resolved Question: Should it be mandated that fast food corporations contribute $1+ for every meal sold to American Healthcare?

Since they contribute so much toward diabetes and over-weight health problems why aren't they held accountable toward contributing to an unhealthy world. How are fast food industries different from a BP oil spill which never gets corrected? I know people should be responsible for their own health and there seems to be a re-education of people in the United States regarding proper diets, but we have a long way to go. more

Resolved Question: Is this how government makes us poor?

Scenario one: Johnny wants a new widget, so he hires Freddy to produce one and pays Freddy ten bucks for it. Freddy, now richer by ten, decides he wants his field hoed, so hires fourteen year old Eddie, and pays Eddie ten bucks. Eddie, now richer by ten, decides he wants a restaurant meal and goes to Frans Deli for the ten-buck eat-all-you-want pig-out-special. Fran, now richer by ten bucks, etc. Going around, that ten bucks has already facilitated the creation of a big meal, a field being hoed, and one widget, and it is still going around. In this scenario, the people have money and a lot of goods and services. Scenario two: Now put a little government into it. Freddy earned ten bucks from Johnny, but after tax has only eight left. His eight only gets part of his field hoed, and Eddie has to pay tax on his eight, leaving only six dollars to go to dinner with. Fran gets Eddie's six for the blue plate economy special, but after tax has only four left. In this scenario, produced is a small meal, part of a field being hoed and one widget -- while the government is richer by six bucks. Now, put government into it some more. To help the agrichemical industry, the government passes a regulation prohibiting youths under eighteen from hoeing fields, so child labor won't reduce the sale of herbicides. To help the fast food industry, government decreed that restaurants who offer cooked-to-order all-you-can-eat meals have to have separate seating areas for them, while blue plate specials have to be served on real, blue ceramic plates, much to the protest of the paper plate industry, but much desired by the ceramics industry, which had the right connections to lobby for their interests. The result -- produced: one widget, Freddy (an organic farmer) has to hoe his own field or go out of business which makes him overworked, depressed and afraid. Under-age Eddie, unable to earn any money at all, goes criminal and steals part of Freddy's crop in the middle of the night and Fran has to charge so much more for her food that her independent business is destroyed, making her feel she would be better off with a McDonald's franchise. ~ Your thoughts? Rants? Rationalizations?@ disgruntled -- Now that is an interesting development. It would be VERY interesting if that action has such tangible good effect that it encourages them to 'enlarge' the qualifying bracket.@ bawnit -- in a free market, nobody does business long with thieves. They get shut out real quick. In fact an argument can be made, with current real world examples, that government 'regulation' actually ENABLES thievery. Regulators aren't beholden to the anti-thievery self-regulation of a free market; they can be bought for the right price. Whereas, loyal patronage cannot be bought -- it must be earned.@ ash -- Granted of course that essential services of civilization need to be paid for. How about substitute "income tax" for "tax" in my story. Because income tax is what removes capital from the market before it can be used BY the market. All of the essential services of civilization that you mention can be paid for by a consumption tax, which unlike income tax does not leach fresh capital from the private sector before it can be put to use.@ Clouseau -- credit default swaps are a gambling operation -- a con game. See my explanation per thievery above. more

Resolved Question: What percentage of illegal immigrants work in the food industry?

My passion in life is the food industry, and watch programs on History Channel, Food Network, PBS, that show the lifestyle and work practices of the food industry. I have noticed an odd trend, though. Most food processors, fast food servers, and harvesters shown in these programs are of Latino descent. I recently read several articles about some meat processors all over the country that have been 'raided' by ICE. One here locally had 400 illegals in a giant facility of 1200 employees. Resolved Question: With 70% of Americans overweight or obese, do you still think it's caused solely by a lack of self-discipline?

Personal responsibility is always important, but I also think it's caused by our sick culture and by the food industry. I think that people here are too stressed out and tired- our culture tells us that we all have to be perfect, rich, beautiful, etc. and so people work their butts off trying to reach that standard. All that pressure created a hectic lifestyle, which stresses the body. Then the body over-produces adrenaline, which increases appetite and clings on to fat in case the body needs it as fuel to evade a predator (which of course doesn't really happen these days). Or there are those who just "give up" because they know they can never reach that standard, and their only pleasure becomes eating and sitting in front of the TV doing nothing. Also, I think it is the food industry. Trans fats and High Fructose corn syrup have been directly linked to increased appetite, increased belly fat, insulin resistance and heart disease. They are in SO MANY products, and sometimes it's really hard to find foods without them, unless people are lucky enough to have a good store near them like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Plus fast food is quick and easy and cheap when people have such busy lives. Also, I think people in the US just don't know about taking it slow and enjoying things. They wolf down the fattiest and quickest food just for a second of pleasure during a crazy day....Whereas in countries like Italy time is taken to prepare fresh and delightful meals which are then slowly enjoyed with family and friends. It's much different than here, things are more relaxed, and people are much, much thinner and healthier. I really am asking a question...what do you think? Are there additional factors at play? Or do you think heavy people are just plain lazy and self-indulgent? I mean, certainly SOME are, but I don't think that's the rule in general. more

Resolved Question: Why haven't liberals started suing fast food and alcohol corporations?

The Clintons new that tobacco corporations had lots and lots of money. So, they had their attorney general find a "legal" way to confiscate the tobacco company's money. Trial lawyers and government got lottery level payoffs. Well, the "nanny state" that liberals advocate promised to confiscate the wealth from fast food and alcohol corporations; government knows whats best for you and wants to make decisions that you are not capable or entitled to make for yourself; SO, here comes the democrats to initiate their plans to decide what is healthy for you; they will tax citizens for making decisions that conflict with what democrats have decided is bad for you and possibly also seize the assets of corporations, who have profited from selling items that democrats have decided are unhealthy. Is the the up-rise of the Tea Party a roadblock for socialists to complete their destiny, to tax citizens who eat unhealthy food and seize the assets of naughty corporations? Is Obama's incompetence and plummeting approval ratings, a reason democrats have not taken their "nanny state" to fast food and liquor industries? Resolved Question: Starbucks and tipping the overly-friendly workers?

Just wondering how people feel about tipping at Starbucks. I have been a server for a while, although not presently. I worked at upscale-casual restaurants, and I needed to thoroughly know the menu and culinary terms to explain to customers, and smoothly execute wine service. I was trained both in the kitchen and on the floor for minimally a week. I gave the very basic job duties because as I was looking to see how people felt about tipping at Starbucks, I kept seeing baristas arguing that they are specially trained, and I just want to remind them that EVERYONE is specially trained (or should be) for their job. I also saw that there seems to be a consensus that anyone who doesn't tip has not worked in the food/hospitality industry. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I have heard that Starbucks' employees earn above minimum wage, have insurance, and paid vacation - even available to part-time workers. Servers and bartenders do not earn minimum wage, do not typically get PAID vacation. Health insurance could be offered, but rarely. Now true, I mostly order through the drive-through (as do millions of people who order fast food- and yes, Starbucks is a glamorized fast food stop) and do not order just a cup of coffee (I get a blended cream frappuccino), but why the hell should I tip? The over-friendly workers annoy me, and they provide no service to me (other than the drive-through). What am I tipping for - pooled tips are ridiculous, anyway. I live in a small town just big enough to have a small Starbucks (conveniently just across from where a local coffee shack has been for some time), and they have a sign explicitly prohibiting tips; the Starbucks in "the big 'ole city" have tip jars. The cute democratic tip jars to vote on your favorite thing for the day. I do not tip, and just wondering how others feel. Also, does anyone find the overly-friendly staff irritating? more

Resolved Question: Are these good topics for a college personal entry essay?

Okay so I finished school and im going into my senior year in high school .But we have to do a draft on a college personal essay. My teacher says to start by brainstorming and choose topics that get to know what you believe in. I want to be a psychiatrist but im not writing about this but here are a few ideas: --> like protesting Soda, Mcdonalds and other fast food industry which leads to obesity and i've seen how this has affected close people to me both mentally and physically. -->the life as trapped young girl (me)! I've always been told follow your dreams, But when people like parents, Teachers and adults say this don't they mean follow the right path that leads to great success and money. --> How soccer has influenced in my life and has made me a more challenging person. -->My experience as a girl in an all girls private school who realizes that gossip in this school is much more greater than religion. you hear god and praying in the administrators and professors but not much in the youth. How god has not yet touched me. This can lead to the force of religion by others. A belief let alone a religion cannot be forced upon younger ones! IT has to come from within. These are all the ideas i have possibly thought of if you have some ideas and advice and stuff please write them. I want the colleges to know who i am and these topics i thought were not common and unique. And they have all a big part of my life. Resolved Question: So will I never get a job unless I speak to the manager personally?

I went to a restaurant and two different waitresses told me they never call you back in the food service industry. You have to walk in between certain hrs and talk to the manager personally. Resolved Question: Does the UK welfare system support the “drug crime industry”?

Resolved Question: Shouldn't we all just get over the fact that mainstream music is bad, and will never be good again?

Compare music to food, maybe 50 years ago food was better because it was hand made, but then the fast food industry revolutionized everything to where you could have a lot of poorly paid workers mass producing food that a lot of people wanted, think of present day mainstream music as being like McDonald's, my point is, chain restaurants like McDonald's are never going to close down and make way for smaller specialty restaurants, and the present day style of mainstream music manufacturing isn't going to go away either.I still love present day non-mainstream music, but for mainstream stuff I need to check out past hits to find stuff I like, anyway I'm not too upset over the state of mainstream music, I just think people should get over it. more
