Open Question: Why are Europeans so big into Nightclubs and dj's?

Every person I have met in the club industry is European pretty much. If they aren't from Europe, their parents were. Most of the women I meet in Nightclubs over here are Polish, or eastern European. Lots of Italians as well are big into nightclubs/dj's/electronic music. Why is this? more

Voting Question: Left wing & right wing extremists, which one is worse?

The Nazi & the Japanese Extreme Right wing NATIONALISTS responsible for World War II which killed 50 people & destroy much of Europe & East Asia, from 1932-1945. The Extreme Left-wing INTERNATIONAL Communists created the COLD WAR (1945-1989) & the So-called Proletariat Revolutions (1918-1989) killing 100 millions people & impoverish 1/3 of Humanity. ======================================… The current Western Nations have unmistakably Left-leaning Policy. So did the Giant Misandry (Man-Hating) Industry. BBC/ ABC/ CBC/ CNN and many others are occupied with 90% left-wing journalists. BBC staff in Chinese & Vietnamese Languages are blatantly employ Communist double agents from those nations. This is why I ask this question. What's your opinion more

Open Question: Could anyone correct my mistakes please?

The article “The spread of counterfeiting: Knock-offs catch on" from The Economist described the impact of counterfeiting on economy and how the fake goods spread quickly all over the world. Fake goods can be found everywhere. In several examples, The Economist points out that NASA has bought suspicious equipment and the number of counterfeit parts in military electronics systems more than doubled. Moreover artificial gold found in German’s bank or fake porches and Ferraris on Bangkok’s streets. According to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, fake goods make up 5-7% of world trade and are worth somewhere between $250-600 billion. Besides that the article mentioned the reasons of the growth of counterfeiting in recent years. Among them are: shift of world manufacturing to the countries with poor protection from counterfeiting, internet that makes it a lot easier to trade goods and recession in rich countries. Because of growth of counterfeiting a lot of companies are making losses. In order to overcome problem of large number of fake goods companies are using more and more sophisticated technologies such as holograms, special inks, watermarking or radio-frequency identification. The most successful method is so called “genetic markers”, made to be incorporated into the packaging or product itself, as well as online “brand-protection” agencies. A treaty called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is expected to be released in order to strengthen controls on piracy. There might be a problem to enforce the treaty in China, since 80% of the world’s counterfeit goods are produced there. Basically, the article “The Cost of Europe's Volcanic-Ash Travel Crisis” from Times, describes the impact of the volcanic ash cloud on the air transport industry. The volcanic ash cloud that grounded planes across Europe last month, has caused chaos and losses to the airlines. Europe's biggest tour operator, TUI Travel, is facing losses of $30 million, which is increasing by $9 million a day. According to the ACI group, the volcanic ash cloud has cost European airport around $183 million. Due to the global financial crisis, travel business had bad time and volcano eruption made it even worse. It caused disruptions in global trade, since a lot of goods traded are transported using air planes. Some food and flowers businesses will be affected by the inability to export their product. It may impact especially Spain which export large amount of products and Kenyan growers that are facing a loss of about $2 million a day. More of the world's commerce may be carried by road, rail or sea, therefore the effect on the wider economy, is not expected to be as great. And as long as the disruption is not too long, this should not be a big problem. more

Resolved Question: Why do people assume World War 3 will happen?

I'll let you all into a bit of info - WW3 will NEVER happen. Too many countries trade with each other; the UN has banned many outdated acts of warfare, aerial bombardment is now ILLEGAL under laws of war etc So get that into your heads *cough Americans *cough* WW3 will NEVER EVER happen; WW2 was the last world war and ALL acts of warfare used then are now BANNED! Plus nukes are on their way to being banned too. Warfare has moved on; aerial bombardment will NEVER be used on the USA, Europe or any other Western Nation. Plus NATO, the EU and the UN were all set up to stop another world war from happening. Also countries like the US and the UK have fantastic air defense so there is no way enemy planes will be able to get into US/UK airspace. The UK, USA etc also have a powerful navy so there is no way enemies ships could even look at US waters without being spotted. Invading another country (like Hitler did) is now illegal and if an invasion did happen the EU and the UN would get involved to stop a war from breaking out. Pearl Harbor will never be attacked again. When British cities were aerial bombed in WW2 (the Blitz); yeah that will NEVER happen again either. Plus China, Russia and Iran are becoming more and more Westernised so why fight and kill if we all beat to the same drum? And last but not least the USA (along with other countries) have nukes; that 100% makes sure that another nation will NEVER attack them; nukes are for protection. During WW2 many cities were carpet bombed by day and night; that will NEVER happen again; the days of carpet bombing are long gone; humans have evolved since then; we can now sit down and talk without flying over and droping bombs. So there you have it; 100% evidence that WW3 will NEVER happen; so stop asking the questions and go out and get stoned/get laid. PS - Carpet bombing is banned; there is no way to destroy the enemy's industry hence no war! There will be no such thing as a world war 3; that is a belief based on your fear. There will NEVER be another war like WW2 ever again. The world is way to joined together and empires are a thing of the past. So PLEASE stop worrying! more

Resolved Question: Should there be a 3rd political party in US?

I am losing my respect for this country. People here talk about freedom and democracy because they hear these words on TV, but if you ask someone to define them, they would not be able to so in any meaningful way. The vestiges of British culture that gave rise to this great country are disappearing, replaced by primitive fast-food culture, and the middle class is getting smaller with every decade. Most people here are ignorant of their own constitution, and of issues around the world. The founding fathers have been sanctified in primitive school textbooks, and most people have no clue what kind of men they were or what they intended for this country, in fact most Americans are totally indifferent to their own history. Hypocrisy thrives: In the land of all men who are created equal affirmative action is seen as a norm, and doesn't raise an eyebrow. In the country where freedom of speech is supposedly protected you would lose your job in a heart beat for saying something remotely not PC (political correctness is rampant here- no one believes what they say any more or dares to say what they believe). The rate of incarceration per ca pita has surpassed every other nation in the world. The quality of life in the US now is actually well below most European countries, but this fact is masked by the habits of population that works long hours, often two jobs, and still barely manages to pay off their bills, and by extreme borrowing on every level, from personal all the way to federal. US thrived first trough exploitation of slaves in cotton industry in 1700's, then trough absorbing cheap immigrant labor from Europe in 1800's, then by selling arms to warring nations during both world wars in 1900's, as participants bled themselves to near death. (WW2 started in 1939, D-day in 1944, that's 5 years of happy arms-dealing which allowed US to climb out of its great depression - but you, my reader, with your typical great understanding of history already knew , right?) . It seems like every major decision now has to be made along the lines on political correctness and party lines. Both democrats and Republicans encourage extremists fanatics within their ranks to prevail over the more moderate members, and to set the tone for the entire party and its agenda. There should be a common sense party, one that does not concern itself with being liberal or conservative, but only with being useful to the nation and protecting the interests of all its citizens. more

Resolved Question: IS SOLUTION TO GLOBAL WARMING & CLIMATE CHANGE JUST WITHIN US?

Having established three weaknesses in agriculture, health & meteorology that have been troubling earth and have been under the administration of FAO, WHO & WMO respectively, author Winston Kayanan from the Philippines saw these as faults of performance in our natural environment. These have already been earth’s chronic pain & disease. We are informed, compelled or induced to believe that carbon emission reduction is still the answer to address global warming & climate change. But in the absence of any evidence by the United Nations (& even the scientific community), it remains to be a theory when they could not defend & justify their ultimate design rationally. This made the mother international treaty as fraudulent & invalid (i.e., void ab initio in civil law & lex solutionis in international law) and made the by-laws (like Clean Air Act, Renewable Energy, and others) in effect as void (if these stemmed from carbon emission reduction as reasons). As such, they cannot anymore blame transportation & industries. Why? It is because transportation & industries rank 5th among the sources of 24/7 CO2 emitters after CO2-emitting decay microorganisms (causing infertility of soil leading to desertification) as first; plant kingdom (thru respiration) as second; insects, birds & animal kingdom (thru respiration) as third; and, man (also thru respiration) as fourth. Its counterpart, photosynthetic microorganisms could not cope with O2 loss when these can perform best (i.e., CO2 absorption) only below the 25 degree Celsius. This happened in Europe in July-August 2003 particularly in France when tens of thousands of people fatally died of sudden death while many suffered severed respiratory problems from suffocation during the heat wave & forest fires. The author responded to help by offering solution of O2 application to victims thru France’s embassy in the Philippines on the belief of massive CO2, CO & CH4 engulfed France’s atmosphere. After 3 months, EEA claimed that it was caused by O3 pollution for days which the author claimed to be false diagnosis since O3 is lighter than CO2, ascending faster in the atmosphere and therefore it could not stay longer in land surface. In one occasion, the author was able to exchange views (i.e., by way of testing scientists) with the Environment Chief sometime in 2004. To the author’s surprise, the Chief did not even know that trees release CO2 too which emission level could reach the same amount of O2 release at saturation point (break-even) via photosynthesis. And another (agriculture) Chief who was communicated, did not even know where O2 could best be derived. On the belief that earth is not reproducing adequate O2, it is surprising to find that algae which produces rapid O2 replenishment, is now being used as another form of alternative energy. The irony of it all is that the Department of Environment & Natural Resources which does not provide scientific opinion consults with these confused scientists. Whether or not the Philippine government assumes, it still does not know the nature of the environment. USA’s NASA-GISS was also communicated by the author via e-mail messages for one year from May 2005-May 2006. Instead of exchanging views, the agency was silent, never responded, until the author found out that they joined the 350.org., a new international NGO. In other words, USA’s scientific authorities have just stopped finding real solutions and, in like manner, whether or not the government of USA assumes, it also does not know the nature of the environment. In such a world, metaphysicists have dominated by psychologically influencing people with emission reduction as their hope. Only that this objective could not progress because it is oppressive, threatening man’s livelihood & a nation’s economy. Others believe differently when imposition of more taxes from the people is their major concern and some do not believe the existence of global warming at all. In challenging the world’s metaphysical belief, some Yahoo repliers (such as scientific blog in 2009) found the author’s suggestion & recommendation of shifting world’s thrust to O2 reproduction or replenishment instead to be logical on grounds that earth is experiencing temporary shortage or loss of O2. Such deficiency is fatal to life for life’s extinction (effects of climate change via natural disasters) is not remote since desertification is continually rising from the 60% datum as of 2005, thereby affecting photosynthesis. The author believes that the answer is already within us. It is already in our mind. We have already acquired basic knowledge in natural sciences (as biology, chemistry & physics), proven with scientific laws, but we have not truly awaken in deeply recollecting & following what God has given us long ago thru our famous scientists as authors of these sciences. And therefore, according to Socrates, the state of being blinded by real knowledge will not last long. People or world m more

Resolved Question: Can I get grants/other help for a self-sponsored trip to Europe?

This month, I'm turning 18 and I'll be a high school senior. I plan on going to college to study International Business and Modern Languages. I've wanted to do this for a long time, but as the dates to begin applying to universities draws closer and before I know it, I'll be at one, I'd like to take some final steps to figure out exactly what I want to do. I'm hoping to travel to Europe in August and visit a few countries there to reaffirm exactly what languages I want to learn and hopefully to find out in what industry I'd like to interpret. Maybe I'll even find a good place to study abroad in the later part of my post-secondary education. Now here's my question: This trip I want to take, is self-sponsored, meaning it's my brain child and I'll be going alone. Are there any individuals or organizations that would be willing to help me out or that I can apply to receive a grant from? Like I said, I'm a high school student so it's hard to come up with this kind of money, but I'm really passionate and I'm trying very hard to make this happen! Please, if you know of any way I can receive aid for this trip, can you let me know? Thanks! more

Voting Question: Parents who got the H1N1 vaccine, would you have changed your mind after reading this?

(NaturalNews) A stunning new report reveals that top scientists who convinced the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare H1N1 a global pandemic held close financial ties to the drug companies that profited from the sale of those vaccines. This report, published in the British Medical Journal, exposes the hidden ties that drove WHO to declare a pandemic, resulting in billions of dollars in profits for vaccine manufacturers. Several key advisors who urged WHO to declare a pandemic received direct financial compensation from the very same vaccine manufacturers who received a windfall of profits from the pandemic announcement. During all this, WHO refused to disclose any conflicts of interests between its top advisors and the drug companies who would financially benefit from its decisions. All the kickbacks, in other words, were swept under the table and kept silent, and WHO somehow didn't think it was important to let the world know that it was receiving policy advice from individuals who stood to make millions of dollars when a pandemic was declared. WHO credibility destroyed The report was authored by Deborah Cohen (BMJ features editor), and Philip Carter, a journalist who works for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in London. In their report, Cohen states, "...our investigation has revealed damaging issues. If these are not addressed, H1N1 may yet claim its biggest victim -- the credibility of the WHO and the trust in the global public health system." In response to the report, WHO secretary-general Dr Margaret Chan defended the secrecy, saying that WHO intentionally kept the financial ties a secret in order to "...protect the integrity and independence of the members while doing this critical work... [and] also to ensure transparency." Dr Chan apparently does not understand the meaning of the word "transparency." Then again, WHO has always twisted reality in order to serve its corporate masters, the pharmaceutical giants who profit from disease. To say that they are keeping the financial ties a secret in order to "protect the integrity" of the members is like saying we're all serving alcohol at tonight's AA meeting in order to keep everybody off the bottle. It just flat out makes no sense. But since when did making sense have anything to do with WHO's decision process anyway? Even Fiona Godlee, editor of the BMJ, had harsh words for the WHO, saying, "...its credibility has been badly damaged. WHO must act now to restore its credibility." Yet more criticism for WHO The BMJ isn't the only medical publication criticizing WHO for its poor handling of conflicts of interest. Another report from the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly also criticized WHO, saying: "Parliamentary Assembly is alarmed about the way in which the H1N1 influenza pandemic has been handled, not only by the World Health Organization (WHO), but also by the competent health authorities at the level of the European Union and at national level." It went on to explain that WHO's actions led to "a waste of large sums of public money, and also unjustified scares and fears about health risks faced by the European public at large." The funny thing is, NaturalNews and other natural health advocates told you all the same thing a year ago, and we didn't have to spend millions of dollars on a study to arrive at this conclusion. It was obvious to anyone who knows just how corrupt the sick-care industry really is. They'll do practically anything to make more money, including bribing WHO scientific advisors and paying them kickbacks once the vaccine sales surge. The vaccine industry and all its drug pushers are, of course, criticizing this investigative report. They say WHO "had no choice" but to declare a pandemic and recommend vaccines, since vaccines are the only treatment option for influenza. That's a lie, of course: Vitamin D has been scientifically proven to be five times more effective than vaccines at preventing influenza infections, but WHO never recommended vitamin D to anyone. The entire focus was on pushing more high-profit vaccines, not recommending the things that would actually help people the most. And now we know why: The more vulnerable people were to the pandemic, the more would be killed by H1N1, thereby "proving" the importance of vaccination programs. People were kept ignorant of natural remedies, in other words, to make sure more people died and a more urgent call for mass vaccination programs could be carried out. Resolved Question: Is it fair to say that progressives/democrats are the ones who favor big corporations over small businesses?

I know the first thing going through your mind is "is this guy crazy", but when you think about the bigger picture of policies it plays in my head at any rate, so here me out before discarding the thought. To be more technically correct I am operationalizing "big corporations" as oligopolies and monopolies; and "small business” as perfectly competitive firms for those with some basic econ knowledge. The reason why progressives generally favor oligopolies over perfectly competitive firms is that oligopolies/monopolies can be controlled more. Almost by definition oligopolies/monopolies exist when the entering and exiting of firms is difficult (or impossible), which creates 2-5 big firms for oligopoly (one for monopolies) that dominate an industry. When you have 1 to 5 heads to watch, that do not change very often, it is much easier to watch said industries. Also unlike perfectly competitive firms, oligopolies and monopolies have market power in that they don’t have to follow the market price, which means more money is generated by oligopolies/monopolies in the long run than what a perfectly competitive firm can generate, and these oligopolies are willing to take on restrictions to satisfy generally progressive goals of employment, environmentalism, unions, etc which small businesses cannot fiscally support but mono/oligopolies can. They take these restrictions and burdens because in return they can get support from the government to protect said industrious by raising the standards (making exit and entry difficult) and thereby limiting pc firms from entering the market, thus maintaining the mono/oligopoly status. So now you have a reward system that keeps people from deviating from of the restrictions. If you noticed, when comparing the US to Europe, there are less small business in Europe (general) than the US, corporate taxes in Europe are much lower than in the US, reason being is that European corporations are held to a much higher standard on how they release employees and what they can and cannot do. Let alone all the social/welfare benefits that corporations are able to supply that small businesses can’t. Not saying that there are not progressive philosophies that do not try to get around this issue or avoid it completely, but from what I’ve seen many democrats believe that the big evil corporations are a construction completely void of their ideology and standards. Anyways, what are your thoughts on this?@hate I appreciate the critical answer, to clarify what I mean with taking on these extra burdens it is not that they like satisfying progressive goals, but it is preferable than operating as a pc firm, and that they would take these unwanted restrictions if it means that they can still maintain some market power, which pc firms are completely without Also pc firms are actually fiscally challanged when it comes to supporting, extra benifits and social perks themselves. Unions, paid vacations, 100% employment, etc only exist within mono/oligopolies. more

Resolved Question: Why Charges against Goldman Sachs Affect Oil Prices.?

I have been reading many articles from variety of economist who correlated the charges against the giant corporation Goldman sacks to the drop of oil prices I am trying to understand it In the wake of Iceland’s volcanic eruption to push oil prices further down. The effect of a volcanic eruption on oil prices can, in a roundabout way, be explained through supply and demand of physical oil—if planes in Europe aren’t flying, there’s less demand for jet fuel. But Goldman Sachs is not Exxon, and the investment bank’s woes do not change how much oil is produced or consumed. So why does it matter to oil traders that Goldman Sachs has been charged with fraud As I understand the worry is the worry is that Goldman will sell off some of its massive investments in oil since they might want to squirrel away some cash just in case the SEC slaps a fine on them. If you asking me I don’t think that huge banks like Goldman have much need for a “defense fund” against the SEC after all, Goldman’s 2009 profit was $13.4 billion, but let say they need to sell what is the impact of the oil market? First of all everybody knows that there is no problems with the oil industries it's only a lawsuit against Goldman Sachs 2nd let they that for any reason there is an effect on the virtual market meaning the stock market but what explanation could be given about the physical market as long as we have a demand for oil, the prices should stay as before If a value of a corporation drops down I could understand the impact on the stock market, but if the stock market decreases why should it have an impact on the real prices since the demand has not changed, is there any relation between the stock market to the real demand? Please explain me the system thoroughly I don't mind even very very long maybe I have a kind of ignorance with that sphere. Please don’t answer if you don’t know even if you think unless you sure in what you are saying. Thanks more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion of this?

President Obama is the backward man. Teddy Roosevelt's advice to "speak softly and carry a big stick" was meant as a guide to successful foreign relations. Obama has completely muddled the message. He speaks softly to foreign adversaries and uses the big stick on American dissenters. Iran and Syria are wooed endlessly with carrots, apologies and promises of grand bargains. They respond with taunts and threats and pay no penalty. North Korea sinks a South Korean ship, and our secretary of state says it means no more business as usual. That's an admission it has been business as usual even after the loony kingdom tested nukes. The Mexican president comes to Washington and berates American citizens for expressing their views through the democratic process, and Obama shamefully nods in agreement. A State Department aide apologizes to China -- to China! -- about our treatment of illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, American "fat-cat bankers" and "greedy" doctors and sundry opponents are demonized as enemies of the state. They respond by sullenly surrendering the health-care and financial industries to Big Government. Welcome to a double disaster. America now has a foreign policy that is a dangerous flop and a homeland as bitterly divided as ever. And don't forget 10 percent unemployment and skyrocketing deficits and debt. Heckuva job, Mr. President. That's the Obama record. Just because he won't face it -- or even answer questions about it -- doesn't mean the rest of us must ignore it. America is in trouble, and Obama can't be counted on to save her. For the dead-enders who held out hope he would moderate his drive to neuter America in the image of European welfare states, it's give-up time. The error of his ways are so abundant and obvious that Obama's determination to plunge ahead must be seen as a fully informed choice. He's not going to change. He is who he is, and what you see is what you are going to get for as long as he is president. Obama has made two fundamental decisions, and both are making us weaker. He is putting America on bended knee around the world, and he is centralizing in the political class more and more power over the domestic economy. His goal of trading America's old friends and allies for new ones threatens to leave us more isolated than before. The old ones are mad and suspicious, and the new ones don't want to be our friends. How exactly have Russia and China reciprocated our self-abasement? They haven't, but we have managed to cause angst and anger in Britain, Israel and Eastern Europe. If George W. Bush's "cowboy diplomacy" was to blame for the predicament Obama inherited, who is to blame for this new world order? It's not Bush's fault that Turkey and Brazil are taking Iran's side and giving it cover to get nukes. It happened on Obama's watch because of his policies. That was a defining moment, as was the visit of Mexican President Felipe Calderon. He blasted Arizona's anti-illegal immigrant bill as "discriminatory" and demanded Obama do something about it. Did our president defend his fellow Americans? Nah. He simply offered that he'd like to do what Calderon demanded, but "I don't have 60 votes in the Senate." The outrage was compounded when Democrats in Congress gave Calderon a standing ovation after he repeated his denunciation at the Capitol. It was a shocking display of anti-Americanism of the kind routine in Mexico City, but wholly inappropriate in the halls of Washington. I'm surprised nobody thought to burn an American flag. Resolved Question: Why are the Scottish racist towards the Welsh and English?

Before the general election I had never had a problem with a Scottish person but then again I don't exactly talk to many. Since the General Election i've had a number of Scottish people being very rude to me, I live on the welsh borders myself. I voted Conservative in the last election and am active on some Conservative pages, that doesn't give Scottish people anymore of a reason to me rude to me. I couldn't understand why the Scottish didn't vote Conservative anyway when they gained seats in England and Wales, some said as the Tories are just a bunch of English toffs, if thats so they why did the welsh vote for them? They made considerable gains in Wales. Plus Salmond of the SNP in the Scottish assembly gets up and critized Labour for not doing a deal with the Lib Dems, they would rather have colourful coalition made up of a number of parties than a stable government of which the Conservatives were offering. He then goes on to say that the Scottish are going to have to bear the Tory cuts, why should it just be the Welsh and English that pays for them? How is that fair? Don't the scottish people realise that they get treated better than the English and Welsh as it is, they get free health care for the elderly for one? Don't get that here, elderly people have to sell there homes to pay for there care. The government gives Scotland a lot of money, the SNP DEMANDED 180million pounds for the fossil fuel levy. SNP said that the oil industry in Scotland bings in 180million and its tied up in Westmisnster and the SNP want it in Scotland. 180million? How does Salmond know its that much if he doesnt see it? Also what about ... See Moregreen fuel? The oil is drilled from the North sea, just cos its brought to Aberdeen doesnt mean its owned by Aberdeen, the North sea also hits Norway, on Salmods basis, Norway should be entitled to some of that money too....? Why is it that everywhere in England and Wales Labour loses seats, except in Scotland not one seat changed hands, in fact Labour increased their percentage of the vote and don't Scottish people realise we are 843 Billion in debt? If we carried on under Labour we would have ended up like Greece, and when you do get bailout it's not for nothing, the country then becomes owned, so it's like as if Scotland would rather become owned by europe than face up to the state that the country is in and the state of the country that Labour as got us into. Someone said to me that all the good, hardworking scottish people left, went to Canada and Australia mostly, I think thats true. Plus Gordon Brown was scottish wasn't he, David Cameron is English so they vote for Gordon Brown on the basis that he's scottish even though he as indebted an entire generation. more

So why don't the genetically modified foods have a label indicating whether they have been modified if they have any benefit at all? Voting Question: Should I sack off the rat race?

I am 23, living in London, I have my foot in the door with the television industry and am studying for a degree. Although there are many prospects for me here I can help but hide the fact that all I want to do is complete my CELTA (teaching English as a second language) and travel the world with it for like 5 years. I’m talking travelling through Europe to south east asia and then teaching there for a year, then travelling to south America and teaching English in Rio, Brazil for another year or so and possibly Africa too. The trouble is that I’m scared that I will be wasting time by not getting into a stable career in London. But then I think, if I don’t do it, I’ll regret it when I’m 30 something and miserable in my soul destroying, rat race London lifestyle. The reason I doubt myself is because I have a very compulsive, hyperactive personality and wonder if I might be making a big mistake by following my intuitions and not getting myself into a mortgage and long term career... Voting Question: How many billions could be saved by legalizing drugs, Dutch politicians know?

Ending drug prohibition: the ultimate austerity measure Published: 19 May 2010 14:07 | Changed: 19 May 2010 16:52 The ban on recreational drugs promotes crime and is bad for public health. By Frits Bolkestein c.s. * Archive - Tourists no longer welcome in cannabis-selling coffee shops * Archive - Dutch message to drug tourists: c'est fini * News - European court weighs cannabis ban for foreigners Austerity measures to cut public spending are a hot topic for debate everywhere in Europe. In the Netherlands, where a new parliament will be elected next month, several proposals to reduce spending by 30 billion euros are on the table. All of these proposals hit where it hurts, but one option could actually be a welcome relief: drug regulation. By 'regulation', we mean: permitting the production and sale of drugs under strict conditions designed to minimise use, while making it as safe as possible. Regulation, however, remains a colossal taboo, even in the Netherlands. And in spite of the Dutch cabinet's pledge that no subject would be taboo in its review of potential austerity measures, a government committee charged with studying possible cutbacks in the security sphere has barely dared broach the subject. It has only considered further regulating the less harmful drugs, marijuana and hashish, which could – under certain assumptions - save 183 million euros now spent on law enforcement and other government efforts, and generate 260 million in taxes. The committee said nothing of other drugs. Recreational drugs were made illegal in the Netherlands 40 years ago. But they are used more frequently than ever, and there are no indications whatsoever that prohibition is effective. It is absolutely certain, though, that prohibition is causing extensive damage, the extent of which has barely registered with the public. At least half of all crime in this country is caused by drugs, either directly or indirectly. Recent data from the Dutch justice department show that 27 to 33 percent of all years spent in incarceration are the result of violations of the law banning recreational drugs. In 2006, three quarters of the more than 300 investigations of organised crime focused on the production of, or trade in, drugs. These statistics are limited to direct violations of Dutch drug laws and pertain to dealers and drug runners, frequent offenders, the cultivation of marijuana in homes and sheds, drug mules, ecstasy labs and export and import. Indirect crimes come on top of that: bribery, threats, corruption, money laundering and the subsequent tainting of legitimate industries like real estate, retaliatory violence between drug gangs, the use of drug money to finance the illegal arms trade. And let's not even begin to mention the international consequences, which include the disruption of entire countries. These facts, unheard of in both senses of the word, are absent in the drug debate, as they are, just as surprisingly, in the security debate. Everyone worried about security would do well to consider an alternative to the current ban on recreational drugs. Amazingly enough, though, prohibition's biggest proponents are avid crime fighters. Can't they see they are effectively serving as key support to the drug mob? Could things be better? Certainly, and that is a proven fact. The 30-year Dutch experiment of selling marijuana in so-called coffee shops is unique. Regulation of this drug has not lead to increased use of marijuana or other drugs. The use of, and addiction to, all types of recreational drugs in the Netherlands lie near or below the European average, and far below the levels common in repressive countries like France, England or the US. Coffee shops have also ensured that hundreds of thousands of cannabis consumers have never acquired criminal records, or seen their driver's licenses revoked, as is common practice elsewhere. This proves prohibition is unnecessary. We can do without this unusual measure introduced to protect citizens against themselves – quite the anomaly in criminal law. Regulation works. Drug crime can be prevented. Any problems caused by regulation pale in comparison to the advantages this incredible breakthrough would offer. Take coffee shops, for instance, which have caused trouble in Dutch border areas. The city of Venlo has effectively solved these problems by moving some coffee shops to the outskirts of town, close to the German border. To draw coffee shops out of the criminal sphere entirely, the cultivation of marijuana needs to be regulated. Dutch municipalities can't wait to do so. The Dutch parliament has twice accepted a motion along these lines. As far as other drugs are concerned, pilot regulation projects need to be set up, carefully but resolutely, for cocaine, XTC, amphetamines and heroine in particular. Proposals to that extent have already been drafted. Are international drug treaties an obstacl more

Voting Question: I have two options, and it affects whether or not this girl stays with me! Help!?

I'm 18 and about to graduate high school. I have two options I can choose from: 1) I can join the Navy since it would be a good experience to travel the world and learn qualities such as leadership and discipline, and also have college paid for by the military for when I got out in 4 years. Then I would have enough money to go backpacking for a couple of months in Europe, I have a fascination for Britain and have always wanted to go there. And then go to college to further my education in drama and film, or the film industry. I have a passion for films and drama. 2) I can not go into the Navy and stick around here and be with this girl that won't be with me if I joined. I like her a lot and it wouldn't be easy losing her. I would take a year off of school and get a full time job somewhere and raise money myself to go to college to get a degree in drama. I don't know what to do! What should I do? more

Resolved Question: Is this a good research paper over Barbie? im only in 8th grade...?

“Barbie is just a doll,” someone once said, but Barbie® is not just a doll; She’s an international fashion icon. The Barbie® doll has reshaped millions of lives and others are in line for the change, but this change would never of happened without the marvelous creator Ruth Handler. The story begins like many other stories; Ruth had been living with her husband, daughter, and son. Her husband, Elliot Handler was in business making picture frames, but when his partner bailed on him; he decided to move on and make doll house furniture with all the left over picture frames. Frankly his partner came back and together they named their business Mattel, ‘Matt’ for Harold Mattson the partner, and ‘el’ for Elliot. Like one quoted “Once a quitter, always a quitter,” and Harold decided to move on once again. Alone, Elliot began receiving help from his beloved wife, Ruth who aspired greatly in building a doll. Unsure of where to find her muse, she began looking quickly and the first place was from the designers in Mattel, unfortunately there was no spark. Depressed the young creator sat at home, where she found her spark watching as her young daughter and her friends played with paper dolls. ‘Barbie® had to be created.’ Family vacation was the next step to the creation of Barbie®. The family of four traveled to Europe where they had discovered the Bild Lilli doll, a doll quite similar to the upcoming Barbie® doll but much different in dimensions, to be exact much larger than what Ruth had in mind. Ruth purchased one knowing that with a model the process of Barbie® would be much faster. Her vision was set, Barbie® named after her daughter, Barbara; would have a narrow waist, long tampered legs, high healed feet, detailed facial features, as well as painted finger and toe nails; this dream doll had to be made. Unfortunately the designers at Mattel were uninterested and thought it would be a waste of much money. So where would the famous Barbie® doll be made? Not America but in Japan, with help from the Kokusai Bocki Kasisha staff, who spent long hours working on the Barbie® project made out of hard plastic with many molded parts. Finally the Barbie® doll was shown to public at the New York City American Toy Fair. She was dressed in a black and white zebra-striped swimsuit with open toed shoes; accessorized with sunglasses, earrings, and her hair pulled back up in a low pony tail. The buyers weren’t exactly impressed with her, but to the kids it meant the world. In fact it took several years for supply to catch up with the demand, and 10 years from the appearance in New York City 1959, the public purchased 500 million dollars worth of Barbie® products, each Barbie® being sold at 3 dollars. Barbie® has evolved into the most successful toy in the history of toy industry. Defined as a “small-scale anatomically molded plastic figure of a human being used especially as a child's plaything and collectable toy,” the plastic doll continues to live on. Today she has more than 80 careers and represents 45 different nations. According to Pechin, “since of its reality to girls it enhances their self-image and potential,” possibly increasing their maturity as Barbie® expands her horizons influencing young kids to do so also. Barbie® is currently marketed in more than 150 nations, and purchased from as low as a couple dollars to as high as 1000 dollars and more. “In every second of every day, two Barbie dolls are sold somewhere in the world.” more
