Resolved Question: Scientific Experimentation and Audio Architecture?

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT ANY ONE OF THE PARTIES INVOLVED, NOR DO I REPRESENT EITHER OF THEM. I HAVE NO FINANCIAL OR LEGAL STAKE IN THIS MATTER. THIS IS SIMPLY A QUESTION, AND ONLY A QUESTION. NO OTHER INFORMATION SHOULD BE INFERRED. As you may know, Muzak, based in South Carolina, employs audio engineers which Muzak calls "Audio Architects". To my understanding, the Audio Architect (other companies have them, too) designs the music parameters for the store. In other words, the Audio Architect meets with the owner or store manager to consult with them on how the store can best use music to optimize the store's branding and themes, to increase sales and ultimately increase the store's profits. So, the Audio Architect determines the type of music (let's say, 90's pop-rock), the volume (let's say, 70 decibels), the musical parameters (let's say, high bass and low treble, low reverb, and many sound speaker locations, etc, etc, etc). Maybe he might even recommend adding a TV screen showing rock videos in the middle section of the store. OK. So here's my thought. Let's say a clothing store hires a Muzak Audio Architect to determine how they can maximize their revenue. The Audio Architect picks a bunch of parameters, and suggests ways to achieve better branding and make customers want to buy more, to increase the store's revenue. And let's say the Audio Architect doesn't make any guarantees. Result: The store gains 1.55 per cent in sales for the year, over the previous year. This is a 1.55 percent gain in a rough economy. But the store owner decides, "Looking at everything as a whole, and seeing the whole picture, this was probably a bad idea." So he gives the Muzak Audio Architect a call. They meet, and the Audio Architect replies, "You're wrong. Our company has proven results, and I have an excellent track record of proven sales increases and boosting profits." The clothing store owner relents, and they decide on slighty different parameters for all the music, speaker locations, reverb, loudness, etc, etc. The following year, the store only makes an 0.42 per cent gain in sales. So the clothing store owner decides, "Each year, my decision was a bad idea. With the market parameters, and our improved clothing quality, and our better shipping company, and our better and more professional clothing salespeople, we should have made at least 5 or 6 per cent profit each of those years." The Muzak Audio Architect replies, "You're wrong. We wrote the book on music-branding and audio architecture. Our system is failsafe." The clothing store owner says, "Yeah? Then why didn't our sales increase to 5 or 6 per cent?" Muzak Audio Architect replies, "I don't know, but our company statistics don't lie. Ours is a proven formula. And, we didn't guarantee you 5 percent anyway. In fact, we didn't guarantee 0.1 per cent. Maybe you made bad decisions on your shipping company, or your maintenance crew, or your returns policy. Say what you want, but you can never prove us wrong." So here's my question: is the Muzak Audio Architect correct? Is Muzak Audio Architecture a failsafe system? Can the Muzak Company back up their results with sophisticated scientific statistical-based studies? Please don't give an answer such as, "You've got to be kidding, man. Muzak has proven results, or companies all over the world wouldn't hire them. Muzak has testimonials from customers all over the world." OK, I agree that they have positive testimonials. But what do we say about negative testimonials? Is Muzak a failsafe system? How can we know that their statisticians are correct? Thank you for your answers = ) Perhaps you are an advertising professional? a statistician? a corporate branding firm? an expert in musicology? What say you? Thank you =)My purpose is to determine whether Muzak's verifiability is unfalsifiable. This case study, as I understand it, indeed provides experimental evidence. It was (is) an experiment in itself. In other words, the store owner experimented with Muzak's "formula", so to speak, and ultimately became skeptical. Consider the following truth. I asked a famous consultant to the entertainment industry, "There are retail stores that have a strict silence policy at all times. No Muzak, no Sirius Satellite, no TruSonic, no DMX, and no boom-boxes. And if you look at their in-store sales and revenue, they have done outstanding and are incredibly successful." He replied, "But you can't prove that they wouldn't have performed *even better* if they piped loud music into their stores." So I'm thinking, "Two can play that game! You can't prove that they *would* have done better with any broadcast piped-in music!" So we have an impasse here. What are your thoughts? Can either view be proven??? more

Resolved Question: Too Much at Stake for the Corporate?

Cricket as a game, particularly in the Indian sub-continent has glamour, money, popularity and even public emotions involved in it. The national teams have the eyes and ears of millions of cricket enthusiasts upon them. Cashing in on this is a vast economy spawned by cricket, which has grown phenomenally over the years. Knowledge@Wharton on cricket in India cites statistics on the stupendous growth of the cricket world. International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport's apex governing body, had a deficit of $ 150,000 in 1992. By 1997, it was no longer in the red and had made $ 25,000. It has been on the rise ever since. With 2007 World Cup, ICC was expected to make a profit of $ 239 million (Actual figures not yet available). Its main source of income is the world cup tournaments. The attempts such as ICC Champions Trophy and ICC Super Series have not been much of a success. India's own BCCI, considered to be the richest cricket association worldwide, has increased its profits from $ 1.11 to $ 7.64 million during 2004-05 and 2005-06. The various cricket governing bodies have their income coming from ticket sales, television broad-casting and sponsorships. Given the huge following of televised cricket in India (200 million in the 2003 World Cup); companies have been willing to spend huge amounts on advertising. Thus, not surprisingly, 85% of the sponsorship for the 2003 World Cup came from Indian companies! India's dominance in the commercial space is evident in the spectator strength, the advertisements, the official global partners for specific events and the sponsorships. Forbes Magazine's valuation of the cricket boards in 2006 pegs BCCI's worth at $ 1.5 billion, while ICC was at a comparatively lesser figure of $ 200 million. While there are 10 test-playing members of ICC, India contributes more than 70% of revenue to the entire sport. The magazine reports: "Most sponsorships and broadcast rights come from India, and Indian tours make foreign boards rich." more

Resolved Question: Any ideas how to market/advertise a new website affordably, as in FREE ads? I am on a very limited budget!?

My business is specialhomeproducts.com. I am getting a pretty good number of visitors, but not very many sales yet. Site has been up since August. I know it takes awhile for the search engines to really pick up your keywords, metatags, etc., but want to get this moving as quickly as possible. Any help given would be much appreciated. I am disabled, and am trying to supplement my disability income with this part-time at home business...as so many hopefuls try and many fail...I don't want to be one of those statistics that fail!! I REALLY need this extra income....anyone out there on disability will understand what I mean by that!! Plus, I need this at home work to keep myself going, and not to get depressed all the time. Thanks for your input.Getting some great ideas from you all....thank you so much. Imisidro....I especially appreciate your comments...unfortunately, I am pretty much "locked in" to the website format I have, due to the hosting company who partners with my supplier...they will only allow me to show a MAXIMUM of 8 products on my homepage. Wish I could show more and had more flexibility with the look of the site, but they won't allow it....have considered starting over and having someone else build another site with the same products, but that would leave out the advantage I now have with this company, in that they keep track of inventory, what is in stock and out of stock, etc. for me...I don't have to do any "cutting and pasting" of the products pictures or descriptions.....so there are drawbacks and good points at the same time with this company I am working with. I have already been submitting articles to articles sites....(another suggestion made)....started submitting to the press releases today! And, yes, I know all about the "pay per click" programs like Google AdWords....those are the ones I am avoiding as long as possible....heard some nightmare stories of people who have lost a LOT of money using them...those clicks can add up to a large sum in no time, especially if you don't have corresponding sales to offset them! And, of course, lately we see lots of ads for "getGoogleAdsfree" and make millions doing it...an ad for a 128 page EBook that supposedly sells you a special "secret" on how to trick Google AdWords so that you end up not paying them anything...yeah, right.....you all give me your take on that one too, please! Google is not likely to let their AdWords program be free, no matter who claims they have a "secret" in getting around the costs of it....don't you agree? more
