Resolved Question: How do you know you are not brainwashed?

I can know, for certain, that I am not brainwashed; because, I do not follow or quote dogma of any kind in response to questions directed at me about me. I do not engage in any rituals that reinforce any irrational ideas or beliefs. I question and doubt everything, until it can be proved to me. I am a free thinker and evaluate everything in the context of reality and not what others would have me believe. So, how do you know you are not brainwashed? To help you answer, here is a definition of brainwashing from Answers.com (but reference any definition of brainwashing you like): 1.Intensive, forcible indoctrination, usually political or religious, aimed at destroying a person's basic convictions and attitudes and replacing them with an alternative set of fixed beliefs. 2.The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation.imrod, your opinion of me is irrelevant and does not address the question in any way, shape, or form. Please, try again - and, this time, try to answer the question. Thanks.imrod, you still have not answered the question. You have merely violated the Question and Answer format of the Community Guidelines. Your response has been disregarded.serene, you have quoted brainwashing material in support of the idea that you are not brainwashed. more

Resolved Question: Pro-choicers - what is your opinion of this?

The UK will soon be airing adverts on TV for abortion. I specify pro-choicers as I imagine pro-lifers' views will go without saying, but of course anyone is welcome to answer, but please lets try and keep it civil and respect the opinions of others. My own opinion is that it's tacky and unnecessary. I feel that sort of advice should be dished out by doctors and doctors alone, who will present a full account of options, not by an organisation trying to sell their services. Advertising implies persuasion to use the advertised product/service. I don't think targeting women who are at a very difficult point in their lives in this way is particularly ethical. I also say unnecessary since all this advice is available from a doctor anyway, who can be seen free of charge in this country remember. I'm very surprised it's been allowed, since our advertising standards are so restrictive. They can't advertise Stage 1 Formula milk, but they can advertise abortion. Seems a little off to me. That's just my opinion, I totally respect differing opinions and I'm just asking because I'm interested to hear what others think. I won't be thumbing down everyone who disagrees with me.1 in 3 women in the UK have at least one abortion throughout their lifetime. I've never met a person in my life who doesn't know where and how to get an abortion. It's a simple trip to the GP to get the ball rolling, something one does when pregnant either way. If people are under a cloud of ignorance in other areas of the world, I assure you that is not the case here! So glad to see my offer of mutual respect is being rewarded with comments like "Get over it". I disagree with it, I have no issue with folk who agree with it! The world would be a dull place if we all agreed! You've never disagreed with anything in your life? I guess you should get over that, too!Desmeran - I'm in full agreement that abortion should not be banned. I'm not an enormous fan of convenience abortions (not that that's relevant here)... but the consequences of taking that option away from women would be unthinkable, IMHO. Sam - If the appeals by pro-life organisations fail then it will be shown shortly, however only after the 9pm watershed. For what it's worth (again, just my opinion), I have no issue with this sort of thing being discussed on TV, and people having their options presented to them this way, as it's a medium that reaches many people. However I personally believe that sort of information should come from neutral sources who are presenting ALL options, not from organisations that stand to profit from women choosing to abort. There is nothing on TV telling women of the options they have available to them through keeping their baby. I know women who have aborted under the sole misconception that they would not be able to afford to raise a child, because they did not realise working parents can get Child Tax Credits to supplement their income. Where is that information? I've also had a friend who aborted cry on my shoulder because she did not consider adoption and wishes she had, because the information is just not out there so readily available. I'm all for freedom of information, but it should not discriminateBella - Not sure if this is the case overseas but if you turn to the back pages of most women's magazines in the UK you'll find the ads section littered with adverts from cosmetic surgeons. Nice, huh!Brahbrah - I've never seen an ad for prescription meds here and as far as I'm aware it is not done; whether it's actively banned or not I could not say. Over-the-counter meds like cold and hayfever medicines are advertised, but never anthing that is prescribed to my knowledge. I do think you make some very good points however, especially in your final paragraph.Dr Toofckn Cool - Tobacco adverts are banned here too, but not tobacco itself. That's a big part of why this amazes me so much - putting it in the wider context of what can and cannot be advertised here. There are plenty of things which are legal but cannot be advertised here, we have the ultimate 'nanny state', so I find it really surprising that something so controversial has been allowed. I also totally agree with whoever said that this normalises abortion. My thoughts exactly. Abortion is a BIG decision and not something that should be taken lightly. Not JUST because of the foetus who is losing its life, but because of the woman who may regret. I've known women to regret abortion and it isn't nice for them at all. As you say, sticking an abortion ad in between a loo roll ad and a Vauxhall ad just makes it seem far too casual to me. more

Resolved Question: Do you think my dreams are stupid? The degree I'm pursuing, my life goals...?

I have been holding a job at my campus since I was a freshman where I meet people visiting our campus. I get paid to mingle, talk, inform, etc. Basically speak + entertain them. I've found my background in my major Communications has been really helpful but I'm so scared about the real world! My focus is in Electronic Media, and I can't begin to describe how much I've learned about social media, advertising, persuasion techniques, business, etc. I feel like it's shaping me into a better writer, speaker + my networking has increased so much. My minor is Marketing and I'm trying to get a PR certificate. My dream is to get a job, and attend Animation school at the same time. On the side I work with music and have a dance team. I feel like my friends wanting to be doctors/engineers/teachers, etc are more practical...and I'm foolish. I've come so far, won awards, and have my own website paid for by the school just to write for the campus and entertain readers. I've looked at other majors, read up on everything, I've researched and I STILL love what I want :( All the career tests online and at my university say being a film director, creator or designer is what's right for me but I'm scared. more

Voting Question: public relations personal statement?

any editing and advice would be great! i'm applying to northeastern, northwestern, u of chicago, usc, mcgill, bentley, pace, johns hopkins and stanford! this is a topic of my choice The media shapes the world around us. Others may argue differently, but public relations is involved in every aspect of the media, the messages it sends to society, and how it shapes our opinions. To maintain and create positive reputation and representation of organizations or individuals is challenging. Public relations is subjective and ever changing; it is truly never a dull moment. Public relations brings refreshing challenges constantly and I believe this is why it appeals to me because of its constant and unexpected changes. From many experiences of organizing and actively participating in fundraisers, volunteer opportunities, and school events, I have learnt to build my skills of persuasion and manipulation – both of which are important for the public relations industry. These opportunities have given me the ability to adapt and organize events for different audiences, subjective to their purposes. I volunteer for different summer camps each year, and I am an afterschool part time rhythmic gymnastics coach for children less than six. In my spare time, not only do I enjoy reading autobiographies of people in the entertainment, political, and sports industry, I also love travelling and experiencing different cultures, languages and customs. I am fascinated with the person behind the public figures who have helped build and create their reputations, as well as the different approaches in advertising for a place of travel. During the end of my junior year in high school, I was in the running for Vice Head Girl. The job of a Vice Head Girl is to organize social events for the whole student body. "The caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly gets all the publicity."- George Carlin. Albeit I lost to a worthy opponent, I did not dwell long on the fact that I failed, but I continued to try and be involved. Evidently, I do not mind being the caterpillar. Though I could not gain official recognition for my involvement, I participated as much as I could in the planning process of our senior year’s first few social events- our annual school market and the school dance. Of the many things that I do in life, I do with passion. For example, I play badminton and train competitively throughout the year. I have also been appointed as Co-Captain and Captain of my school team for three consecutive years. It has always been a part of my life and I am still active in the game, whether it is training three times a week, training others, or just playing for leisure. I am ambitious and adaptive, motivated and organized. I want to learn from the best and become the best. In the future, I do not only want everyone to be mindful of the positive reputation that I build for others, but also the reputation I build for myself. A bold statement by Nikos Kazantzakis: ‘since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality.’ It is not a simple Nike way of thought, “Just Do It,” but as PR, the least we can do is adapt to the situation, and face it with integrity. more

Resolved Question: Could you look through my writing and correct my grammatical mistakes? Part 2 - Thank youuu?

Hi:) Could you look through my writing and correct my grammatical mistakes? It is a part of my coursework. Thank you very much for your help! Advertising is one of the most popular form of communication with customers whose purpose is to inform potential customers about products and services. Advertising typically attempts to persuade potential customers to buy products or services. Adverts are usually designed to a domestic audience and the same domestic advertising campaign will be not as efficient is different countries as it is in home country. Usually, the main purpose of advert is to convince people that the product is perfect for them. People believe that by purchasing a product they will receive some benefits (status, lifestyle etc.). When advert is realised abroad, different people may have different priorities in life and the advert will be not successful. The entire range of Lynx’s adverts is a great example of convincing people that that they will receive some certain benefits if they will purchase a product. Lynx mainly targets their deodorants to teenage males. In their advert adverts they are using average looking males who spray themselves with the deodorant to demonstrate how the lynx deodorants affect males. Lynx adverts promote that their fragrance attract girls and it is their main point of marketing campaign. Sometimes it could be difficult for to countries, such as The United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates to accept or even understand each other's persuasions. In many countries some kinds of adverts, may be not allowed and banned to show in television or displayed in public places. For example, the United Arab Emirates has strict rules on advertisements. Anything related to alcohol is to allowed to show and there can’t be any skin shown, they cover legs up to the knees and eyes are usually closed or pixelized. They still imports magazines from other countries; however they censor every publication by hand using a black marker. more

Resolved Question: Do all mouth-wash contain fluoride, & will it help after I drink orange juice or coca cola?

I bought this Colgate Plax mouth-wash (with 12 hours protection from bacteria and plaque) however the listed ingredients on the back sticker of the bottle doesn't show list fluoride though. Someone suggested to me rather than buying the expensive Colgate enamel protection toothpaste, instead consider using a cheap/cheaper toothpaste on all sides of the teeth for one minute or so, then don't consume anything for at least thirty minutes - to allow the toothpaste to do it's purpose. Colgate has recently been advertising their new enamel protection toothpaste, but advertisers/marketers like to persuade people into wanting, needing things and playing on insecurities. So what's to say I'd necessarily need it. (The "art" of persuasion) Mouth-wash of any brand, kind - colgate, listerine, etc won't re-enamel or re-mineralise teeth will they? If fact does any toothpaste actually re-enamel or re-mineralise teeth? I don't chew gum anymore (not usually) although it apparently neutralises tooth decay, etc when/once chewed from stimulating saliva. I don't drink Coke all the time, rather in moderation - when I do sometimes buy a 1.25 L bottle, I will have just 2 x 473 ml glass tumbler amounts of it, and maybe 1/2 of 473 ml a third day, to use some of what's remaining in the coke bottle. And with Orange Juice, not always each night, when I have bought Orange Juice/have a bottle in the fridge, I'll have 1/2 of 473 ml glass tumbler amount with evening meal/dinner. But I don't drink OJ and CC every day/every week though. Maybe I should take the mouth wash back and exchange it for a cheaper toothpaste? (Although brushing can be a little time consuming) Any ideas, suggestions, other than - "don't (or) stop drink/drinking it"To clarify I mean, 1 x 473 ml of Coke Zero, a day for two days. (So 946 ml over 2 days, not necessarily days "back-to-back")Will Mouth-wash actually be of any good though for acidy drinks, etc?Is that expensive Colgate Enamel Protection toothpaste actually worth getting? - Or is it advertising persuasional spin? more

Brainwashing: The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation. Resolved Question: Religion is a nail?----------An atheist ask?

The harder you strike the nail, the more difficult you pull it out, even worse, with the time flies, you'll get more and more like it....History has already proven it, the Romans persecuted christians, it turned out became the No.1 religion in the world now, USSR persecuted it, but what happened?----Communists had their own Holy city---Moscow, their own God---Marks, their own apprentices---Lenin, Mao..etc, just like Christianity.....now Russian is a religious country. As an atheist, I think it's time to think about it--the major religions (especially Christianity), why it can lasts for 2,000 years and didn't die out?even more, the No.1? I do think there's something different, who ever invented it must knew Advertising, there're 3 method of persuasion: Authority, threaten and compliance.Apparently they knew how to use "threaten"--if you don't believe, you'll go to hell forever...if there's really no God, you have nothing to lose...yeah, It's Gambling. Resolved Question: What can we do about covert persuasion?

Subliminal messaging is the flashing of words for a frame or two in the middle of a movie or show. It was outlawed in America, but it is an inaffective form of covert persuasion? There are many forms of covert persuasion that are very affective, including product placement, repitition, association, and a variatey of word studies that determine what words and images can be said first to induce positive emotions that the mind will subliminally associate with the main subject of focus. These methods are used in political campaigns, product advertising, corprate pr and court rooms. I believe they are the true enemy of American people and democracy. What can we do about it? more

Resolved Question: How is religion any different than brainwashing?

Brainwashing is defined as follow: 1. Intensive, forcible indoctrination, usually political or religious, aimed at destroying a person's basic convictions and attitudes and replacing them with an alternative set of fixed beliefs. 2. The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation. Please explain to me, without quoting the bible (which would be quoting the indoctrination material to try to prove it's not indoctrination material, which would be circular logic) the difference between brainwashing and religion? more
