Resolved Question: Waste not want not -- truth forgotten in the age of consumption or just cheap worthy of being vilified?

Waste not want not --- Just an excuse of the cheap at heart and therefore compared to being miserly Or a virtue or conservation reuse and so forth ? How does the phrase play out according to the consumption culture -- and is it fair to say the consumption culture was created by corporate advertising and managed by media conglomerate corporations ? Or is it just being cheap -- and what is the difference between frugal and cheap if there is one? They used to sing about "it" being a dime a dozen -- what happened to your purchasing power in this age of consumption ? more

Resolved Question: I am 13 years old and I need a way to make a lot of money so I can use it to move out and live in Vancouver?

I live in Toronto, I can't have a job, I don't get paid for cleaning up or things like that, I do not know any of my neighbors, I don't know anyone younger than me that I can babysit, I am smart and eligible to tutor, but it is very unlikely that my parents will let me, or that anyone will want me to tutor them. I don't think I would be able to get corporations or big companies to let me wear clothes advertising them, so suggest something sane please, and I am thinking about starting a blog with like funny and/or interesting things on it because I am HILARIOUS... (you'd be surprised at how funny nerds are these days) but I don't think I will make very much out of that. Also, please don't tell me that it is ridiculous to save money for something like that. I hear it enough from my friends. I am positive I want to use it for that, and if by any chance I change my mind, then I'll use the money for something else. Please be serious and sensible. So to all the people out there who spend all their time looking at yahoo answers as means of entertainment and respond in a matter of minutes, please don't fail me. Thank you. Oh, and please don't say something like "think smart about your purchases and energy consumption and cut back" because I already do. I am very ecological.I live in Toronto, I can't have a job, I don't get paid for cleaning up or things like that, I do not know any of my neighbors, I don't know anyone younger than me that I can babysit, I am smart and eligible to tutor, but it is very unlikely that my parents will let me, or that anyone will want me to tutor them. Thanks.and also to jim, my neighborhood has a lot of kids my age tutoring other kids my age and they are making good money out of it, and I already said it was out of the question. GOD. why do all these bitter adults use yahoo answers as an outlet to be mean and condescending to kids. Like what is wrong with the world?! more

Resolved Question: I HAVE BIG IDEAS!!!!!?

I want to start my own country. I will have to buy land from a country that is poor, so I can afford it, but it has good resources, so my country can be rich. Here's how my government would be; You apply to move to my country If you decide not to work, we will send you to an island with resources where you can survive on your own, but you can't return. You start school at 5, and finish at 20, which will be the legal age. Drugs that are psychoactive are illegal. Weapons are banned from people who aren't police, or in the military. We have a powerful military, so war can be avoided at all costs. People can drive cars at 20. People can marry whoever they want, and can marry as many people as they want (any dislike of polygamy is cultural, but since this is a new country, it can have a new culture.) Minimum wage will be 1/5th of maximum wage. People can eat anything that is edible except other people (any dislike of the consumption of things like horses, dogs, cats is only cultural.) Animals must be killed humanely. This includes a bullet to the head, or a quick decapitation. Knives and CO2 will not be used. Government isn't done the same way. There will be people who study the economy under one branch, there will be people who make ethical decisions, and there will be people who will make decisions regarding foreign relations on the last. Each branch will have 100 (congresspeople) to run it. People can say what they want if it isn't threatening, hateful, or discriminatory. People are allowed to criticize the government. Currency will only be used to purchase amenities like vacation, cars, games, toys, homes, etc. Everyone who works will have access to medical care, and food. Only people who have proven themselves as highly intelligent, competent, and wise will get into government branches. They will have one term, and will serve for one year. People who commit serious crimes (this includes murder, abuse, and treason) will be banished to a second island for criminals. They will be separated from the island of people who won't work, so they aren't hurt or killed. People who commit minor misdemeanors will first be given warnings, their second act will be considered, and a punishment will be decided. People are innocent until PROVEN guilty. Circumstantial evidence isn't enough. Corporations that spread lies through advertisement will not be allowed to advertise, judging by the severity of what they did. A public service announcement will air, saying that their claims are invalid. There will be extensive food regulation, so people cannot make crappy products and lie about it. There will never be ingredients such as "natural flavors" and "artificial flavors". Instead of sugar, a very general word with many different forms, products may be labeled as sucrose. Starch is sugar, corn syrup is mostly sugar, malt is sugar. In major cities, there will be the biggest firework shows in the world! Thousands of fireworks will enclose cities everywhere for every national holiday! In schools people will learn history, reading and writing, math, biology, physics, foreign languages, and they will be given an elective. Only paper money will exist, because the idea of coins is silly. Just for fun, really crappy entertainers like ke$ha and Justin Bieber will be banished to a THIRD island, so they don't get killed by the criminals, or annoy the lazy or criminals to death.I will not legalize drugs, because they cause violence. Alcohol is a drug. The plant marijuana isn't a drug, but it contains THC, which is. If they breed marijuana that doesn't contain THC, people can smoke it all they want. If people did shrooms, wouldn't there be a lot more car wrecks? If only wise people make the decisions, and these people are replaced every year, there will not be an imbalance. Just to make sure, there will be certain laws put in place which can NOT be changed. There are other differences between the EU and my government. how my congress is laid out. The laws regarding drugs are tight in my country. There is a maximum wage too. Food is not something that is purchased. how crimes are handled. Oh yeah, there is also a firework show that is amazing. I know all about government, and aware between the similarities between my country and the scandinavian countries.daniel l. This is a stupid question (no offence). People don't own animals. Businesses can. When you are working in the business you can use it on the animals, but that doesn't mean you own it. You can't bring it home with you.People are sent to an island instead of prison, so they can live how they want, but society no longer has to suffer from their presence. more

Resolved Question: How healthy is milk and cheese?

Apparently, demographic studies have shown a clear correlation: consumption of dairy is positively correlated with heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes. The correlation numbers are huge and staggering. However, even PBS is pushing dairy foods in their cooking shows. It appears that mass media is inundated with advertising dollars from dairy associations to produce milk mustache commercials and other promotions. Can media be trusted when it comes to the alleged health benefits of dairy?Livy: Fiber comes from plant based foods. Dairy contains no fiber.David: Dr. T. Colin Campbell has 3 decades of peer reviewed scientific studies showing huge correlations between the consumption of dairy food products and diseases such as heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and diabetes. It's not a scare tactic. Who would profit if it were? Who would profit by a denial?Livy: Calcium in milk is not readily available to humans. In the famous Nurses' study, women who drank more milk had higher rates of bone fractures and more osteoporosis. Cow milk is far less beneficial than calcium in kale or collards (leafy greens). Huge dollars are spent by the dairy association to mislead us. more

Resolved Question: Aren't grapes healthier than wine?

Studies have consistently demonstrated that moderate consumption of alcohol and wine is statistically associated with a decrease in death due to cardiovascular events such as heart failure. Is that just advertising for alcohol or is there actually a benefit that grapes don't offer us already? Polyphenols, antioxidants, and flavonoids are present in the grapes. Is the fermentation into alcohol and extraction into the alcohol of these substances helpful for our intake? The presence of (extra) yeast is a small plus i suppose? Or do the potentially beneficial substances like vitamin B12 break down during the making of the wine? The only hint that wine beats grapes in one aspect is this (maybe): resveratrol is produced naturally by grape skins in response to fungal infection, including exposure to yeast during fermentation. As white wine has minimal contact with grape skins during this process, it generally contains lower levels of the chemical. Benefits of resveratrol have been suggested after animal studies (in mice, not men). Resveratrol is inactivated in the gut/liver, so most of it doesn't reach the blood stream. So if at all to benefit from resveratrol in wine, one must sip it slowly, because absorption via the mucous membranes in the mouth can result in up to around 100 times the blood levels of resveratrol. If you know more, let me know. Thanks! No best answer to my question yet (please read the whole introduction too, answering yes on my title question doesn't help). Not many people responding to the question, maybe there's just no health benefit from wine over grapes, and maybe that's just obvious to all of you. But more people drink wine without considering grapes (or grape juice without the dangers of alcohol). No fun in that said someone. Aren't there other ways to have fun without having to wreck your health? Feel free to answer. To Luacharman: how does alcohol help? more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion of California's digital license plate?

This is CNN's viewpoint: http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/21/news/economy/california_budget_electronic_plates/ This is an alternate viewpoint: http://dvice.com/archives/2010/06/bad-idea-digita.php Advertisements would be on your private car. It would seem requiring you to use your private vehicle to advertise products or services you find offensive would equate to "big brother" going too far. Would there be a big brother GPS connection to your car to flash Amber alerts and advertisement changes? It would seem there would be power consumption off of the car's battery when not running, what issues could that cause? The license plate number has to be visible all the time. Would intentionally killing the power to the plate make it blank to assist criminals? Removing power could be done easily enough. Has anyone ever tried to read a plate number in a spit second, in order to assist law enforcement? Not too easy getting it right, and just how much more difficult will it be to catch that plate number when advertising is also there? It would seem that most everyone views their vehicle as a personal extension of themselves. Has California finally slipped over the edge? Would California be 19 BILLION dollars in debt if they didn't have to provide services for anchor babies, their mothers, and the rest of the gang? It seems obtaining revenue this way is grasping at straws for a situation they brought upon themselves. What is your opinion? . more

Resolved Question: Why is the loony left now trying to ban "discrimination" based on beauty and/or the lack thereof?

http://www.inthesetimes.com/working/entry/6090/the_beauty_bias_at_work_and_what_should_be_done_about_it/ Don't we have enough "anti-discrimination" laws already? This article I linked to laments the fact that employers prefer to hire employers who are attractive looking and that they "discriminate" against people who are unattractive, including "overweight" people (last I checked, being overweight is an unhealthy lifestyle choice and everybody has the ability to simply reduce their consumption of calories). Fortunately, we haven't yet reached the level of absurdity that Britain has. It is illegal in Britain to advertise for "reliable workers" as that "discriminates" against the unreliable (see: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7079231/Advert-for-reliable-workers-banned-as-discrimination-by-Jobcentre-Plus.html ). Instead of a future in which everybody, no matter how ugly or incompetent, is guaranteed an "equal opportunity" to obtain every job, how about getting rid of these ridiculous "anti-discrimination" laws and trying something called freedom of association and private property rights instead? more

Resolved Question: Did Critz' victory show Democrats a roadmap to victory?Run against Obama's radical healthcare/cap&trade/FinReg?

Will Democrats minimize the damage of the next election cycle if politicians promise to oppose the radicalism we've been seing from Obama & Pelosi? Will voters trust them? How far will Obama and Pelosi get? Step 1: Government take over of healthcare, banks, manufacturing, and energy sectors of the economy. Step 2: Impose draconian taxes on any consumption of energy. Resolved Question: Do Canadians think it should be illegal to use toys to advertise junk food?

In one California county, for example, the municipal law banned McDonalds happy meals because these hamburger meals come with toys for kids. This is to prevent endorsing and rewarding the consumption of food for children that is unhealthy for their diet. Are there bans like this in Canadian municipalities? On this issue, what is the Canadian consensus? If say a very fattening Tim Hortons doughnut were being handed out with toys for kids, wouldn't this be rewarding behaviour in children that is not necessarily good for them? How do Canadians feel about this issue? more

Resolved Question: Can you please proofread my work?

Can you please proofread my work? Advertising to children has become big business in recent years, with kids under 12 spending over 24 billion dollars of their own money in 2009 and directly influencing the spending of 188 billion more. From a sociological point of view, however, this phenomenon is related to the rise in the “money culture” that places value on an individual based on what he or she posses. This surge in child consumerism has resulted in a keen interest among marketers in knowing what makes kids tick. Marketers have discovered that intriguing fact that it is very well possible to sell to children. They know that the child consumers of today are the largest and fastest growing market. To learn more, advertisers have hired well-paid psychological consultants to help them study every phase and stage of a child’s life. The results are sophisticated, finely-honed commercials that work. All around the world, children spend more time in television than they spend in class. TV sometimes exceeds sleeping hours. Such prolonged hours in front of the TV play a major role in forming the children’s consumption pattern. It is no wonder, these days television advertising is so effective. According to Nancy Shalek, then president of Shalek Agency, “Television has become the best medium for advertisement. Advertising at its best is making people feel that without their product, you’re a loser. Kids are very sensitive to that. If you tell them to buy something, they are resistant. But if you tell them they’ll be a dork if they don’t, you’ve got their attention. You open up emotional vulnerabilities, and it’s easy to do with kids because they’re the most vulnerable” Marketers also work hard to increase their product’s “nag factor,” a term which refers to how often and how vehemently children pressure parents to buy an item. Parents feel guilty about purchasing items, such as junk food or violent video games that they believe are bad for their kids. On the other hand, they worry that by constantly saying “no” they will increase their child’s depression or worsen parent-child relationship. Afsana Parvin, mother of 7-year-old Deepika, says.” Because she is so young it is difficult to explain the pressure it creates on parents. And she is the only child so it is hard to say no.” “Kids these days ask for more because they are exposed to so many things right now. When we were kids, we were not exposed to all these advertisements. In fact, the media was very limited in our times,” points out Dalia Arefin, a bank employee. Parent, meanwhile, in their earnestness to give the best to their child may go a bit overboard with their generosity and give in to their endless demands without any thinking. But by encouraging such materialism, are we really benefitting our kids? It is children’s tendency to show off and have the latest cool thing. When they do so, other children of their same age go through peer pressure and feel that if they don’t have that “cool” thing they are worthless. Most parents are very unsatisfied about the marketing of food to children. Food advertising on TV is often for junk foods like chanachur, potato chips, juices, soft drinks and candies. Total airtime of these foods always exceeds commercials for healthy food. Fast food shops all around the world spend billions to advertise their foods, for persuading kids. To directly target children, the fast food industry uses more than traditional commercials. Restaurants offer incentives such as play-grounds, contests, clubs, games and free toys. The free-gift marketing strategy has been there for generations in western countries and now our part of the world is trying to catch up with this trend. Another disturbing trend in child advertising is the targeting of very young children. Mike Searles, then president of Kids-R-Us, a major children’s clothing store, believes there are great advantages to hooking a child as soon as possible: “[I]f you own this child at an early age, you can own this child for years to come. Companies are saying ‘Hey, I want to own the kid younger and younger’” (as quoted in Ruskin, 1999, p. 42). As kids are becoming more powerful consumers, marketers are targeting them even more bluntly. To make kids spend more, the advertisers are letting their imagination run wild using sophisticated psychological techniques which includes catchy jingles, dances and cute cartoon characters, portraying adventures and mysterious worlds, always implying that their products will bring unbounded happiness. “The only thing I want to be is a beyblade player and go to the big stadium and become a champion,” says Sunny. He actually thought that the beyblade cartoon was real and has a collection of 67 beyblades! Advertisements can shape self-image and values of our children. Young children have difficulty distinguishing between advertisements and reality, and may not understand that ads are there to sell something for profit rather than with pu more

Resolved Question: Did you know the Church of the Euthanasia is the only True church?

I invite you to join, it's an officially registered not-for-profit religious group. It gained media attention when members of the church appeared on the Jerry Springer segment "I want to join a sucide cult". Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Church of Euthanasia posted to its website a four-minute music video titled I Like to Watch, combining hardcore pornographic video with footage of the World Trade Center collapse. The montage featured an electronic soundtrack recorded by Korda and the lyrics, "People dive into the street/ While I play with my meat." Korda described the project as reflecting his "contempt for and frustration with the profound ugliness of the modern industrial world." The church's website previously had instructions on "how to kill yourself" by asphyxiation using helium. These pages were removed in 2003 after a 52-year-old woman used them to commit suicide in St. Louis County, Missouri, resulting in legal threats against the church. The one commandment is "Thou shalt not procreate". The CoE further asserts four principal pillars: suicide, abortion, cannibalism ("strictly limited to consumption of the already dead"), and sodomy ("any sexual act not intended for procreation"). The church stresses population reduction by voluntary means only. Therefore murder and involuntary sterilization are strictly forbidden by church doctrine. For more information and pictures of public protests and advertising please visit: www.churchofeuthanasia.org For other information you can visit the Church's website directly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_euthanasia Our Reverend is a transsexual named Chris Korda. Resolved Question: Why do Conservative districts consume the most PORNOGRAPHY, could this explain why "Nailn Palin" is so popular?

Porn in the USA: Conservatives Are Biggest Consumers 8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election By EWEN CALLAWAY Feb. 28, 2009 Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography. A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School. However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says. Political Divide Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm. That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest. The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says. Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32. Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Business/story?id=6977202&page=1 more

Resolved Question: <<<<< TO HAVE OR TO BE >>>>>?

Face, again, the educational side of the issue. There is no doubt that consumption were born to enrich the manufacturers of "goods" but (and that capitalism has enhanced the way) to distract you from the true values of life that we can identify (in order ) with: love, friendship, relationships, health, art, science, relationship with nature, cultural, defense of the weak, and solidarity. The famous psychologist Erich Fromm said: "The consumer is an eternal infant that screams for the Mother's milk". And the adults (they are also the fault of the consumer) are so convinced that the consumption is a way to heal the wounds in relations between people to use it also as a means to recover the relationship with their loved ones. Those disputes are trying to recover with a nice gift is often useless? How many parents think they put everything in order to buy a child a toy advertised pretty well so far signed or a T-shirt? In short: is more important to have or be? We say, not to be Manicheans, which is essential to be (be men and women to be citizens, to be honest, be healthy, be happy, be free ...) and it is important to have what is needed to be. The rest is superfluous, often useless as harmful... more

Resolved Question: People good with grammar and writing help with this article full of mistakes?

By the way, this essay was not written by me, I just found it on Wikipedia.Try to find as many mistakes as you can and correct them. This will show how well you are at grammar, spelling, etc. I want to see what people think of this! The Super Bowl has been the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the premier association of professional American football, since 1967. In most years, the Super Bowl is the most-watched American television broadcast. Many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event’s pre-game and halftime ceremonies. The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday,[1][2][3] called Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day.[4] Exclusive television broadcast rights for the Super Bowl rotate each year among three of the four major American television networks: CBS, Fox, and NBC. Because of its high viewership, commercial airtime for the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive of the year. Due to the high cost of investing in advertising on the Super Bowl, companies regularly develop their most expensive advertisements for this broadcast. As a result, watching and discussing the broadcast’s commercials has become a significant aspect of the event. The Super Bowl was first played on January 15, 1967, as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and a rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues’ champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game, until the merger was consummated. After the merger of the two leagues in 1970, each league became a "conference", and the game was played between conference champions. Lamar Hunt, former owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and founding member of the American Football League, coined the name Super Bowl after watching his children playing with a Super Ball. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. Super Bowl I was played in 1967 to determine the championship of the regular season played in 1966, and Super Bowl XLIV, on February 7, 2010, will be played to determine the champion of the 2009 regular season. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, while the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have each won five. Seventeen other NFL franchises have won at least one Super Bowl. Only four active NFL franchises have not appeared in the Super Bowl. They are the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. The Lions are the only NFC team yet to play in one, the other three are in the AFC. The Browns and Lions have both won NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era, while the Jaguars (who joined the NFL in 1995) and Texans (2002) joined the league after the Super Bowl era began. more

Voting Question: Debate: Advertising alcohol should be banned. (For the change)?

I need some help getting started we have the debate coming up (probably next week, hopefully) and I need some help. With the ban on tobacco advertising there must be some way this doesn't violate the freedom of speech. Maybe, commerical speech has something to do with it? Is there any evidence that supports a ban on advertising would decrease consumption? Just to be safe, if we did ban it how much of an economic impact would it cause? This is a 9th grade Speech class debate so don't go lawyer on me, heh. Any info you have otherwise (links are helpful) would be appreciated! Thanks! Also, I was stuck with this and do not fully agree so i'm just looking for info not personal beliefs, sorry :( more

Resolved Question: "Wanted: Expert to study lap dancers." Would you apply for such a job?

Leeds University is advertising for a £31,000-a-year researcher - to study lap dancing. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_3582412.html?menu=news.quirkies The post, in the School of Sociology and Social Policy, is for: "Research Officer - The rise and regulation of lap dancing and the place of sexual labour and consumption in the night time economy". The Government-funded position will see the successful applicant interview 300 lap dancers in in two northern English towns. The study, which comes with a salary of £31,513, is aimed at finding out who becomes lap dancers and what their working conditions are like, as well as how the number of bars have multiplied. The ad stipulates the successful applicant will need to have "prior experience of conducting research in the female sex industry". But Susie Squire, political director at the TaxPayers' Alliance, complained: "This is the ultimate non-job and will both anger and bemuse taxpayers. "It may be a dream job for some men, but it's just another nightmare of public sector waste for the ordinary people who pay for it." more

Resolved Question: Do you agree that it is easy to feel powerless?

What the older generation may not yet understand is that our generation's problem is that we do not lack ideals; we suffer from an excess of them. We are not unaware of important causes, we are starving for a way to realize them. So companies prey on our starvation. They offer us a product to satiate our need for community, for purpose. We take our ideals and become the generation of Whole Foods-shoppers, Prius-drivers and American Apparel-clothes wearers. We show off our causes gladly on our Facebook page and on our t-shirts. Not only have we been sold our ideals back to us in the form of the shoes we buy and the coffee we drink, we are conscious of how our very passion is being co-opted. And still we do it, because we crave an imaginary community over no community. Some will say that as long as we must buy things in this economy, why not buy whatever is organic, fair trade, sweatshop-free, environmentally friendly, free range? But Do we need to support the most corrupt of companies and their labor practices? We do not hope to answer those questions. Rather we need to acknowledge that the real problem is this: consumption is now framed as a question of what causes we support, what communities we are involved in. This is the opposite of the commodity fetish that hid social relations beneath the veneer of objects. Now commodities must advertise the social relations we wish to be part of. Thus, it is easy to feel powerless, not merely because we are disenchanted with traditional activism and its results, but because our desire for collectivity has been displaced onto the realm of things, away from our material existence. We do too many things to show we care about this world; we do everything except come together to change it. more

Resolved Question: Please review my essay on Super-Size Me?

This is my essay for Health. We watched the movie Super -Size Me and were asked to do this. The topics I included were all given and had to be used. and then of course, there had to be and intro and a conclusion. I dont want the essay checked for facts. I want it checked for grammar and that kind of stuff. so if you have the time to read this over i would greatly appreciate it. I've numbered the paragraphs so that you can refer to them more easily. thank you soo much 1 Super-Size Me is the perfect movie to watch to understand the benefits and harms of certain eating habits. It teaches us about the dangers of fast food. Not only that, but it also explains what foods to eat, how much of those foods, and ways to maintain a healthy weight. 2Super-Size Me is a great teaching tool for students and everyone else. For example, it shows us the risks of eating fast food, specifically McDonald’s fast food. Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald’s fast food for thirty days straight. He gained 25 pounds and also doubled his chances for heart disease. It took Morgan 14 months to lose his extra weight and he said it was nothing close to being easy. In addition, this movie shows the ways schools are affecting obesity in their students. Vending machines with pop are one of the main reasons. Some schools have banned soda vending machines and even prohibited students from bringing soda. Furthermore, Super-Size Me gives awareness about the consumption of fast food. Forty percent of American meals are eaten out of the house; that is about 121,623,890 people! Because of fast food restaurants, sixty percent of Americans, about 182,435,834 people, are either overweight or obese. 3 This documentary film shares many interesting facts. For instance, the people of America eat more than 1,000,000 animals hourly. Another fact is that there are only seven items on McDonald’s menu that contain absolutely no sugar. As well as McDonald’s being unhealthy, it represents 43 percent of America’s fast food market, which makes things even worse. Also, each day 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant. 4 I think that it makes complete sense that the main cause for people being overweight and obese is the fast food industry. The food is already so fattening. On top of that, it makes a person lazy because it depresses the body and harms many of its organs. If you look back many, many years ago, weight was not such a huge issue. That is because the fast food industry was not so popular. This not only prevented people from becoming so weighty, but since they were not getting so much fat they also were active. 5Now, the question is, whose responsibility is it for Americans’ weight problems. The credit for that should go to both, the fast food industry and the general public. Yes, industry encourages the public to buy their food; they advertise through television commercials, signs, and even toys. But then again, the public is stupid enough to fall for all these advertisements. Fast food is not the only thing being advertised. There are commercials for whole-grain cereals, and articles about how to keep up a healthy lifestyle, and even free samples of fruit at the grocery store. Even so, we still tend to fall for the junk. 6Back in the 1950s, the founder of McDonald’s said, “Look after the customer, and the business will take care of itself.” This means that if the customer is convinced to buy the food then the business will be fine because it will be making money. Basically, customers are being looked after and at the same time being harmed because the food they are told to eat is only hurting their bodies. But no matter what, the business is making good movie. 7Overall, Super-Size Me teaches that fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s are extremely unhealthy. The food should be eaten very sparingly if at all. Otherwise, nutritionists advise to never eat it. It affects you in many ways, like by increasing your weight, or even heightening your chances of heart disease.someone told me to take out the 'i think' that starts the fourth paragraph. the thing is, the teacher told us to give our own opinions/personal experience in the essay. if i took out the 'i think' wouldnt it sounds just like facts? not my opinion? more

Resolved Question: How can our culture consume less junk without hurting the modern U.S. and, in turn, global economies?

We are consumers of increasingly disposable and useless stuff. Basic necessities we buy are designed to break eventually so we will have to buy new things. I wish things were more simple. Modern consumption is inefficient, bad for the environment, and in my opinion bad for culture. The United States economy has, however, grown to its vast size through this industrial tradition. We, as citizens, have become advertising targets everywhere. The current recession has generated much fear in Americans who really don't know much about it. Where can I, as a progressive, turn to in order to find ways to consume less crap while helping the economy to thrive? more

Resolved Question: is it harmful for adults to drink milk?

yesterday at the university we were talking about dairy products such as milk and cheese i said that in our country avarage consumption of milk is very low in comparison with other countries and we everybody agreed that milk is very useful and we must drink 2-3 glasses a day to remain healthy but our teacher took me aback when he said diary products our just garbage and a never use it he said human is kind of animal and we have evolved from a creature which has been a animal. if you look at other animals for example a cow you never see that they never feed their babies with milk more than six month or at most1 year, because automatically they stop producing milk and their babies dont need milk. and now days factories are advertise on milk and say it is very useful while they use special devices for sucking milk out of udder, and because it is not natural its useless. what do u think? i want you to tell me if u can prove him wrong so that i can continue this debate tomorrow in to convince him that he is wrong more

Voting Question: Why are there ads avertising the "dangers" of marijuana use, but no ads for the DANGERS alcohol?

Of course there are commercials about drunk driving, but what about the other dangers? Such as: Alcohol consumption is associated with a number of physical and social problems including About 2/3 of violent behaviors on campus Almost half of all physical injuries About 1/3 of all emotional difficulties among students Just under 30% of all academic problems $15 billion in health care costs (12% of total adult) In the short run, physical problems include reduced physical coordination reduced mental alertness, poor decision making, staggering, slurred speech, double vision, mood swings, unconsciousness OVERDOSE Long term chronic consumption of high levels of alcohol leads to higher risk for heart disease for liver disease, circulatory problems, peptic ulcers, various forms of cancer, irreversible brain damage Of course if you don't drink too much that will probably not happen, but they don't tell none of that stuff on TV, do they? All they do is demonize Marijuana (Actually that's not even the plants name, the name "Marijuana" was used to cause fear in the American Population) they say it'll make you stupid, It'll cause brain damage (Which is a big lie, the experiment which pointed that Marijuana causes brain damage was done like this: The scientists placed masks that pumped Marijuana smoke into the monkeys' airways, after 90 days, the monkeys were reported to have severe brain damage, but what they didn't tell you was that they pumped marijuana smoke only, no oxygen no nothing, just marijuana smoke, [4 minutes of lack of oxyge in the brain, causes ireversible brain damege]). Cannabis is not a bad drug. But going back to the Question, why are there ads advertising the "dangers" of marijuana but nothing about the alcohol's health dangers? more

Resolved Question: Pills made from soy that eliminates leg pain from heart disease?

I'm trying to figure out the pills that are new, possibly, and are advertised in magazines sent out in mail. Leg pain is due to the low supply of oxygen because of the heart. This causes many problems for the present and future of the person with heart disease. The pills are made from soy. In the magazine, an article talks about how Japan has the oldest people on earth because of their great health. Their excellent health is due to the large consumption of soy from foods and drinks. Soy can be used for many meical and dietary purposes, which is why the pills work (i hope). Please, if anyone knows what these pills are then answer my question! I am tired of having painful legs especially during the night time. I am also a very young adult, so the pills aren't just for elders, but many of them have already tried and said that it worked wonders. I'm sure the pills aren't called Quanine or however you spell it. Thank you very much for your answers!! more
