Resolved Question: Is this saying 1 in 4 women should not be having babies?

A new advertisement for digital pregnancy tests say that "1 in 4 women can misread traditional pregnancy tests." I get 2 things from this: 1.) By saying "can misread" they could make up any statistic that they like and it "could" still be true. ;) 2.) If 1 in 4 women DO misread traditional pregnancy tests, then some where around 1 in 4 women are really freaking stupid and should not be having babies. How hard is it to decide if it's 1 line or two; pink or blue? more

Voting Question: can advertisements lie about...?

Example: Purell: Instant Hand Sanitizer, "#1 Doctor Recommended Brand" Can advertisements lie about that statistic/ fact? Is it legal to just post that on the bottle even if it's false? My friend was telling me that there weren't any rules against it, so the brand can just make that up to increase sales. That's bullshit! Is my friend wrong? Or are we rubbing in a lotion of Anti-truth? (sorry about that last part, i was just reminiscing about Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, where that bearded guy would always come up with a lame pun as the last line before the commercial break) more

Resolved Question: How is my english essay? Please give feedback.?

Advertising Encourages Youth to Embrace Negative Gender Stereotypes The media today displays many aspects of the human physique in negative ways. It is quite apparent that youth currently are being affected harmfully both mentally and physically due to the fact that advertisements are bombarding them with negative gender stereotypes. Encouraging students to embrace these negative qualities gives them the obsession to find that ideal body type to fit that advertisement description with any means possible. Secondly, this makes youth feel that embracing the negative stereotypes, even if it goes against their own morals, allows them a sense of fitting in with this society. For these reasons, advertising in today’s materialistic world promotes youth to embrace gender stereotypes and consequently gives them the obsession for the advertiser’s ideal body type and making it seem it is the only way to co-exist with the fad. With youth at the tender age where their self-esteem is fragile, the advertisements give them the sense that it is the only way to fit in and become normal, or cool. Youth are very impressionable when it comes to the media. A quote from the article The Price of Happiness states, “Advertising at its best is making people feel that without their product, you’re a loser.” Some products that advertised may seem out of the question with some youth, but if it appeals to their emotions then they buy into what they are trying to sell. From this, they feel a sense of self-confidence and belonging. Overall, this puts a lot of pressure on youth through their peers and society itself to show the change into the people they are not. If teenagers are not wearing the latest clothing line, as everyone does, they are seen as social outcasts and it forces them to follow advertisements as if it were vital. The American Psychological Association released a report that concluded that the sexualization of young girls causes them stress with mental and emotional breakdowns. It increases in their minds because not only do they think about it but also rather, it is repeatedly being shown in the media at any given time. It was inevitable that something would result from this sort of pressure. In schools and societies across the country, it is apparent that teenagers are being segregated for the image that is not the total Barbie Doll look. As a result, teenagers tend to take on the role as clones to look and act like everyone else to avoid confrontation. For instance, within R.H. King many, many students are seen with Hollister, Abercrombie, or Aeropostale just because it looks “hot” to wear it. Many feel that you can share that type of relationship with a girl/guy in an intimate manner as they do in the advertisement. Consequently, everyone is similar and unoriginal and stereotypes break loose. From that, it is evident that they act quite differently to fit that advertisement which expresses the seriousness and dominance in men, and vulnerability and submissive attitude that women portray. From an advertisement promoting Dolce and Gabbana, it gives the perception that all males are dominant and strong. The woman on the other hand, is quite submissive and shows her lack of self-confidence. This gives youth the impression that acting as they do in advertisements allows them to fit the category of being a man or a woman. Moreover, not only does it affect youth mentally, but physically gives youth an obsession for that ideal body type. There are many different methods that youth try to attain the ideal body all affecting themselves harmfully. Health Canada has a statistic, which states that 1 in 2 girls and 1 in 5 boys in grade 10 either were on a diet or wanted to lose weight. One method to achieve that six pack or bean pole body shape is by going on a yo-yo diet. A yo-yo diet causes a person to lose weight, but in the end, the weight comes back and sometimes increases from before. Many teenagers believe that eating nothing will give you that self-conscious belief that you are thin. The Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2001 published an article that stated 27% of girls aged 12 – 18 have a problematic food and weight behavior. Secondly, from News Week 1 of 10 males have an eating disorder. This proves that being bombarded with ads, males and females take it so personally that they are willing to harm their bodies to achieve that status. Nobody seems to care for what others do to achieve perfection because they can see themselves doing the same thing. As a result, youth are given the impression that trying to accomplish the perfect body type is a good thing. This leads youth to the sensitivity of their body image. It is apparent that a huge portion of youth feels that their body is satisfactory. This may cause them to have poor self-esteem. Comparisons start to occur with youth to who looks thinner or more muscular which also influences their mind. Body image is displayed in advertisements, much of the more

Books. Magazines. TV. Films. Plays. Advertisements. Clubs and bars. Radio. Yahoo Answers avatars. Everywhere.... The world is absolutely saturated with sex. The statistic 'men think about sex every three seconds' - probably because every three seconds you walk past a billboard or magazine with some scantily-clad model trying to appeal to your 'secondary brain' (primary, in some cases). Am I a bit ambitious in wondering if anyone else can think clearly, and honestly say 'sex is not overrated'? more

Resolved Question: This is my essay which I've just completed. Please correct my faults if you can. Thank so much !?

This is my essay which I've just completed. Please correct my faults if you can and give me your opinion. Thank so much ! TOPIC: HOW MANY TYPES OF ADVERTISING ARE THERE? PRESENT THE FEATURES AND EXAMPLES OF EACH TYPE. ANALYZE THE APPROPRIATENESS OF THEM. Nowadays, almost companies can’t lack advertising to introduce their products or services to market. There are many types of advertising. Each type has different role and appropriateness. So, this essay will focus on three types in three paragraphs. Introducing about print advertising in the first paragraph; and then, introducing mass media advertising in the second paragraph; and finally, introducing outdoor advertising in the third paragraph. Today, advertising products via print media is a common practice. The print media include all newspapers, newsletters, magazines, booklets, pamphlets, and other printed publications. The role of print advertising is to offers basic information about the company, their products or services to the selected audiences. Most print media are local. Magazines, on the other hand, have always been national, although there is a trend today toward localization and specialization. There are a huge amount newspapers and magazines are published everyday. But only some types tend to a particular group people. For examples, sporty newspapers are written for men, teenage magazines for teenagers, etc. Therefore, select the right type of newspapers or magazines is important decision of the company, which may reach larger selected audiences. According to a statistic, in Vietnam, at present, there are about 600 newspapers and magazines. Almost companies, which are operating in Vietnam, are advertising via print media; for examples, Vinamilk, FPT, Honda, etc. Mass media advertising is popular most and impact in people’s awareness of the companies and their products. This type includes TV, radio and internet. Mass media advertising is more than simply persuasive messages. Through text and through images, the ad conveys values and beliefs, and these have meanings for those who read, listen or watch them. In this type, cost is the main obstacle for companies which want to advertise on TV. Moreover, just as print ad, mass media ad also has many channels tend to many different objects. Consequently, if the company advertises with reasonable duration and right channel, the company will not waste more money and their advertising still effective. Due to the great role of mass media in the life, nowadays, there are many companies use mass media for their main publicity. For instance, Unilever present their products as OMO and Comfort, P&G with Tide and Downy, etc. Outdoor advertising, one of the oldest and most enduring forms of advertising, is advertising on signs that are located outdoors in public places. This form includes billboards, trade fairs, sporting evens, etc. Outdoor advertising captures the viewer's attention 24 hours a day. True, it has limited coverage. But a well-planned outdoor campaign can effectively cover most major markets. The main features of this type are brevity of the message and cannot target customer. So, the message usually is slogan of the company, such as Canon Corporation with the slogan is “Delighting you always” or Toyota with sentence “Moving forward”, etc. In short, using which types and using on which time is important decision of the company. In my opinion, with carefully choosing, the company can get what they need from all the variable advertisements  more

Resolved Question: How to do this math problem below?

. Multiple Regression Model Suppose a large consumer product company wants to measure the effectiveness of different types of advertising media in the promotion of its products. Specifically, two types of advertising media are to be considered: (1) radio and TV advertising, and (2) newspaper advertising including the cost of discount coupons. A sample of 22 cities with approximately equal populations is selected for study during a test period of 1 month. Each city is allocated a specific expenditure level for both types of advertising. The sales of the product (in thousands of dollars) and also the level of media expenditure during the test month are recorded as follows: CityRadio & TV Advertising ($000)Newspaper Advertising ($000)Sales ($000) 1040973 20401,119 32525875 42525625 53030910 63030971 73535931 835351,177 94025882 104025982 1145451,628 1245451,577 135001,044 14500914 1555251,329 1655251,330 1760301,405 1860301,436 1965351,521 2065351,741 2170401,866 2270401,717 Using Megastat correlation/regression or MS EXCEL regression function under TOOLS menu, Data Analysis: 1.Find the coefficient of multiple correlation (R) between sales and advertising costs. Resolved Question: What can be improved on this passage?

Rubbish English Tutorial Classes All of the English tutors are rubbish. Don’t waste a second on them. Learn English yourself and you will succeed. It is disappointed to see 80% of the students taking English tutorial classes. Students are misleaded by advertisement, and affected by peer pressure. In the advertisement, you will see former students getting a distinction or a significant improvement in terms of grade. Does the case represent the majority of the students who takes their tutorial classes? They claim 23A, 145B and 554C, but why don’t tell us they have thousands of D, E and even F? Don’t trust the statistic figure, it is very misleading. The advertisement will even claim their tips are accurate in public examination. In fact, they just give a lot of passages to you, and only one or two of them are similar to the passage containing in the public examination. I said similar; this word is not accurate; frankly speaking, the two passages may just share the same topic; and then they claim they make accurate tips. I am able to give you accurate tips too. The topics of examination must relate to these several aspects: health, information technology, school life, and global issues. Imagine you are the examiner of HKEA, you can not make the materials in the paper becoming too specific. For example, you will not include an article about Physics, telling Newton first law is a body having a tendency to keep its state of motion unless a net force acting on it, in the exam paper. This is unfair to art and commerce students. The way for HKEA to consider the topics of the passage appearing in the exam is the themes relating to our daily life. They want the make the exam being fair. Therefore, it is needless to study the notes distributed by tutorial school; instead, all you have to do is reading newspaper. After getting into the tutorial classes (because attracted by those advertisements and amazing statistic figures), the English king/queen will teach you a lot of examination skills. I cannot say examination skills are useless, but I dare to say those skills are only useful to students who is competent in English to a certain level. They may get a B without taking tutorial classes but they get a distinction if they do so. For those who will get a D/E/F/U without taking tutorial classes, you will still get a D/E/F/U after taking tutorial classes. Scoring low marks is not attributed to lack of examination skills, but possesses weak language foundation. Fabulous stock phrases, fancy vocabulary, and advanced sentence structures containing in the notes are also appealing to students. There is no fault to use difficult vocabulary, unless you are able to use them correctly. Reading the examination reports, every year many students use complicated sentence structures and vocabulary which beyond their ability to handle them successfully. Finally those students get DEFU. A good composition consisted of forcible content and precise language. You are not asked to write a poem; you don’t need to use beautiful vocabulary. The aim of your piece of work should be writing precisely – people are able to get your idea when they read it for the first time. You cannot improve your listening and speaking skills by attending those tutorial classes. They have limited time to brush up your skills. The only way to improve these skills is to spend a lot of time on listening to radio and watching movie. You will gain a lot in pronunciations, information-processing speed, as well as vocabulary. Do not waste any time and money on tutorial schools if you want to learn real English. Take the most pragmatic approach to learn English: read newspaper, listen to radio, write English diary, and talk to your friends using English. No pain, no gain. more

Resolved Question: Is there a simple way to hold Congress & Senate accountable for a straight 'up or down' vote ?

Is there a simple way to hold Congress & Senate accountable for a straight 'up or down' vote instead of political wrangling? Democrats playing trump card more often By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS, Associated Press Writer Sun Jul 8, 12:40 PM ET WASHINGTON - It is the closest thing that Senate leaders have to a trump card, the only way to wrestle the famously balky institution into predictable action. ADVERTISEMENT Lately, though, the nearly century-old tool known as "cloture" has become more of a routine way to score political points. Once, it was a carefully wielded ace used to push a difficult bill past a parliamentary hurdle and into law. That is because cloture — a way of cutting off debate and setting a final vote in the otherwise ungovernable Senate — has lost much of its potency as a legislative tactic. Cloture votes were conceived to free the Senate, in exceptional cases, from the whims of a tiny minority. Such votes now serve to showcase the majority party's agenda and the lengths to which the opposing party will stand in the way. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is on track to shatter the record for cloture motions filed. He highlighted that statistic recently to illustrate what he called "Republican obstructionism." The strategy mirrors the one Republicans used against then-minority Democrats three years ago in a closely divided Senate. Many believe the GOP's portrayal of then-Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., as an obstructionist cost him his seat. Reid has turned to cloture early and often — 42 times since January. He says it is out of necessity because Republicans — sometimes just a small band of conservatives — have sought to block not only Democrats' priorities but also some initiatives that enjoy bipartisan support. He used it repeatedly, with disappointing results, on the immigration measure that just collapsed amid bipartisan opposition. Reid, however, also has used cloture votes to put Republicans on the record on hot-button issues. They include opposing President Bush's Iraq policy, expressing "no confidence" in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and backing a bill that would unionize workplaces without secret ballot elections. "We have spent a lot of time on the Republicans delaying what the American people want us to do, and that is legislate," Reid said in a testy exchange with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the minority leader. McConnell said Reid's use of cloture votes was "a power grab." "The Senate isn't a factory. We don't push things down the line," McConnell said. "There is a saying about courtship: Shoot for two, end up with zero. So far, this would be a fitting epitaph for a Congress that has sought to do much but has accomplished little." Cloture emerged in 1917 as a way to limit filibusters, the tactic by which senators use their rights of unlimited debate to delay or block legislation. President Woodrow Wilson, frustrated by a 23-day filibuster that stalled his proposal to arm merchant ships in World War I, called a special session to consider a cloture proposal. The Senate, he said, is "the only legislative body in the world which cannot act when its majority is ready for action. A little group of willful men, representing no opinion but their own, have rendered the great government of the United States helpless and contemptible." The resulting rule held that if two-thirds of the Senate's 100 members agreed, debate on a measure could end and a vote on passing or rejecting the proposal could take place after each senator had an opportunity to speak for another hour. The high bar for cloture meant it was seldom used and almost never successful. Senate historians say cloture was invoked in only five cases over the next 46 years. Cloture rules have been revised a number of times, most significantly in 1975. That is when the threshold for ending debate was lowered from two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 senators, to three-fifths, or 60. In 1986, the cap for debate after cloture was shortened, from 100 hours to 30 hours. Robert B. Dove, the Senate's parliamentary referee between 1965 and 2001, said cloture lost some of its power as political divisions in the Senate became more prominent. "There used to be a difference between how you voted for cloture and how you felt about the underlying bill. That has all gone by the boards. With the Senate in an incredibly partisan position now and the margins so tight, cloture is really not a great tool," Dove said. Former Sen. George J. Mitchell, D-Maine, was majority leader in the early 1990s. He said he became accustomed to seeking cloture on matters large and small when he realized that Republicans would object to virtually any action he tried. Both parties are equally guilty of that practice, he added. "It was more or less in anticipation — and probably based on some specific threat — of filibuster," Mitchell said. "It's common on both sides now that people use it when they think it will advance their political goals and to block legislation that they don't support." During Mitchell's last two years as majority leader, cloture was sought 80 times, just short of the record of 82 set during the next Congress under Republican Sens. Robert K. Dole of Kansas and Trent Lott of Mississippi. Some Republicans suggest that Reid's pace toward eclipsing that record might be intended to portray GOP lawmakers in the 2008 election as blocking the nation's business. "You artificially run up the number of cloture votes and then set out on a search- and-destroy mission to tarnish incumbent Republicans as obstructionists," said Eric Ueland, who served as chief of staff to former Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. Still, with Republican objections coming fast and furious, cloture may be among Democrats' only options. GOP lawmakers spent the last few hours of Senate business before the Fourth of July break blocking final negotiations on broadly supported lobbying overhaul and anti-terrorism legislation. "It's the only way to manage the floor," said Reid's spokesman, Jim Manley. "The alternative is to do nothing, and that's absolutely unacceptable." Besides, Mitchell said, campaigning on a theme as obscure as a slew of failed cloture votes would be a tough feat. "The public's view is, 'You're in charge — you produce,' " he said. "If you don't produce, it's your fault — even if it's the other guys who prevented you." ___ On the Net: Senate background on cloture: http://tinyurl.com/333udm more

The hypothesis tests in #6-10 must include: The null and alternative hypotheses; Either the p-value, or the rejection region (depending on your approach); The value of the calculated test statistic along with the formula used; The rejection decision; and The conclusion. ( Answer any questions in the problem.) Note: For tests using Observed (O) and Expected (E) values, include a list of your E values. One of the sports car magazines has a very prestigious and wealthy group of readers. The magazine editor says the average annual income of his subscribers is $95,000. Because advertisements in their magazine target the rich, the magazine charges a let for each ad. A potential advertiser asked the magazine for a random sample of 10 names of readers. After checking out these names through credit reference bureaus, it was found that the ten subscribers had the following annual incomes (in thousands of dollars): 73 81 65 42 57 110 93 52 70 96 Use a 1% level of significance to test the claim that the mean annual income of subscribers is less than $95,000. more

Resolved Question: Will White people ever change?

CHICAGO - Decades after the civil rights movement's greatest victories, black youth often see a world rife with discrimination, a new survey says. And yet they remain optimistic about their chances for affecting social change. ADVERTISEMENT Researchers at the University of Chicago, who were releasing the study Thursday, say their findings also show that these youth are complex when it comes to such issues as sex education and hip-hop music. Cathy Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Chicago and the report's lead author, said the aim of the survey was to provide data that goes beyond broad stereotypes. It found, for instance, that while 58 percent of black youth say they listen to rap music every day, the majority of them also think its videos are too violent and often portray black women in an offensive way. "I enjoy rap music — I love hip-hop. I love totally different types of music," says Lauren Guy, a 24-year-old substitute teacher from Oak Park, Ill., who participated in the survey. "What I don't like is how women are degraded in music and how violence is glorified." The survey, which researchers call the Black Youth Project, details the responses of nearly 1,600 black, Latino and white participants, ages 15 to 25, from several Midwestern cities. Their responses don't always paint a rosy picture about minorities' view of the country. More than half of African-American and Latino respondents said they believe government officials care very little about them, while 44 percent of white youth said the same. Just over half of black youth also were the most likely to feel their education was, on average, poorer than that of white youth. About a third of whites agreed with that statement. And 61 percent of African-Americans who were surveyed said they feel held back by discrimination. "It's a red flag, prompting us to talk about what needs to happen in this country to bring about true equality for young people in general — and especially vulnerable young people," Cohen said, referring not just to black young people, but to everyone from low-income youth to gay and lesbians. While they see many social problems in the world, the survey indicated teens and young adults are optimistic about their chances of changing things for the better. A large majority of youth in the survey believe, for instance, that they can make a difference by participating in politics — with 79 percent black and white youth and 77 percent of Latino youth saying they feel that way. They're also using their spending power through "buycotts" — buying products because they like a company's social or political values. A quarter of black youth said they'd participated in a buycott in the last 12 months, while 23 percent of white youth and 20 percent of Hispanic youth said the same. Cohen said several of the respondents mentioned the Motorola (RED) campaign, aimed at helping fund the fight against AIDS in Africa. Other survey findings included the following: • About a third of black and Hispanic youth thought drugs, violence, gangs and crime were problems in their neighborhoods, compared with 10 percent of white youth; • 59 percent of white youth report receiving care from a private doctor, while 40 percent of African-American youth and 39 percent of Hispanic youth say the same; • 81 percent of white youth, 79 percent of Hispanic youth and 76 percent of black youth disagree with the government funding abstinence-only education; • 76 percent of African-American youth, 74 percent of Hispanics and 68 percent of whites think condoms should be provided at high schools. The study is unusual in that it spotlights a group that's often overlooked by social scientists. "We sometimes get a little statistic here and there as a footnote to someone else's research," says Bakari Kitwana, the Cleveland-based author of "The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African-American Culture." "This is a study that puts young black kids at the forefront." Initial interviews for the survey were completed between July and November 2005, with in-depth interviews carried out in 2006. Youth interviewed for the project were from Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Gary, Ind. The survey, which was funded by the Ford Foundation, has a margin of error of less than plus-or-minus 2 percentage points. more

Resolved Question: Commissioner Stern of the NBA has made carrying a gun an issue at the bargaining table. Fair or inappropriate?

David Stern understands having a gun to protect your home. He's not convinced carrying one on the streets makes you any safer. ADVERTISEMENT For that reason, the NBA commissioner said Wednesday that he would prefer his players leave their firearms behind when they go out. "It's a pretty, I think, widely accepted statistic that if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically," Stern said during his preseason conference call. "We think this is an alarming subject, that although you'll read players saying how they feel safer with guns, in fact those guns actually make them less safe. And it's a real issue." It's one that was raised recently when Indiana's Stephen Jackson shot a gun in the air at least five times outside an Indianapolis strip club on Oct. 6. He originally told police he fired in self-defense during a fight in which he was hit by a car. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement allows players to own licensed guns, but they can't carry them on any league or team business. Asked what kind of firearm rule he would want if collective bargaining weren't involved, Stern said: "I would favor being able to have a firearm to protect your home. Period." more

Resolved Question: Statistic (Depreciation)?

Recently, Steven did a market study that showed tremendous market potential taking orders and delivery fuel to industrial areas. This is due to an SCDF guideline that requires the transportation of fuel above 20L to be on vehicles with PTL (petroleum transport license). A brand new PTL vehicle costs about $50,000, with COE (Certificate of Entitlement) of 10 years. After 10 years, the scrap value is $5,000. From a week's Classified advertisements, Steven compiled the following offers: Vehicle Age (Years) 2 4 5 7 8 Selling Price ($) 34,000 24,000 18,400 10,800 8,600 Average Yearly Distance Clocked (Km) 10,000 9,000 9,500 9,800 9,000 Where applicable, analyse using the 4 depreciation methods as an entrepreneur. You must make meaningful comparison across all 5 used vehicles, together with buying a brand new one. Explain which is the best method. State what other factor(s) may be critical to your decision. Include any assumptions that are to be applied consistently, if any. To illustrate your understandings, show as much relevent working as possible. more

Resolved Question: What should be done with these type of persons?

HIV man 'had sex with hundreds' Email Print Normal font Large font Julia Medew October 11, 2006 Advertisement AdvertisementAN HIV-positive man accused of attempting to spread the virus to at least 16 men told a doctor he had engaged in unprotected sex with about 200 men in one year, a court has heard. Dr Giles Brewster, who treated Michael Neal on two occasions, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday that Neal gave him the statistic while he was being treated for gonorrhoea on April 14, 2003. "Michael said he was unable to retain an erection with a condom on … I reiterated that his behaviour was against the law," he said. A former sexual partner of Neal's, who is HIV-positive, said Neal spoke of "conversion parties", where HIV-positive men would supposedly have unprotected sex with healthy men trying to contract the virus. Neal, 48, a father of five, is accused of trying to infect 16 men between October 2000 and March 2005. Two of the alleged victims have since tested HIV-positive. He faces 120 charges, including intentionally causing a very serious disease, rape, and possessing and producing child pornographySource: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2006/10/10/1160246132267.html more
