Resolved Question: Why did the GOP block the campaign bill?

As expected, Senate GOP blocks campaign bill By DAVID ESPO (AP) – 1 hour ago WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans blocked legislation imposing new restrictions on political activity by special interest groups Tuesday, likely dealing a fatal blow to a drive by the White House and congressional Democrats to rewrite campaign rules in the run-up to the midterm elections. The 57-41 vote was three short of the total needed to advance the measure, which calls for greater disclosure on campaign advertising funded independently by corporations, unions and other organizations, but included an exemption for the National Rifle Association and a small number of other groups. Less than 100 days before the elections, the debate was highly political — and the outcome widely anticipated. Anticipating defeat, Democrats swiftly unleashed a coordinated attack employing one of their emerging campaign themes. "After a year of defending big banks, big insurance, big oil and other special interests, Republicans might want to drown out the voices of Americans who don't have the financial resources of big corporations but want to have their say in this year's elections," the party's chairman, Tim Kaine, said in a statement. Republicans, anticipating big gains in the fall, folded the day's Senate events into their own election-year argument — that Democrats have been unsuccessful in easing double-digit unemployment. "Today was a rebuke to congressional Democrats who need to put aside their electoral self-interest and start addressing our struggling economy, which continues to be the primary concern among American voters," GOP Chairman Michael Steele said. Democrats drafted the bill in response to a Supreme Court ruling last winter that said corporations and unions were free to spend their own money on advertising, mass mailings and other forms of political activity. A companion measure cleared the House last month on a near party-line vote over vociferous Republican protests. Under both bills, nearly all organizations airing political ads independently of candidates or the political parties would be required to disclose their top donors and the amounts they paid. The group's CEO or other top official would be required to appear on screen taking responsibility for the commercial. Additionally, any business, union or other entity holding a government contract worth more than $10 million would be banned from a variety of political activity, as would firms in possession of federal bailout funds and corporations in which foreigners own more than a majority of voting shares. Corporations, labor unions and others engaging in certain types of independent political activity would be required to report donations, dues or other contributions from all donors who have given $600 or more. Whatever the partisanship involved, the legislation was a case study in the power of special interests. The NRA exemption originally was added in the House after Democrats concluded it was essential if moderate and conservative members of the rank and file were to vote for the legislation. The loophole was then broadened as the leadership sought to quell criticism that it was bowing to a group that had been instrumental in blocking gun control bills long sought by liberals. In the end, the NRA was officially neutral, angering Republicans who didn't want Democrats to have any political help in advancing the legislation. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO both opposed the bill, a rare agreement of two arch-foes. Organized labor had been neutral when the bill passed the House, but switched its position after changes were made to tighten reporting requirements for transfers of dues money from local unions and their national headquarters. The American Civil Liberties Union also was against the bill, arguing it was a violation of First Amendment rights. The constitutional debate was overshadowed by the approach of elections, though. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the bill's chief sponsor, said it was intended to crack down on shadowy campaign groups that spend heavily on attack ads. Referring to Republicans, he said, "There are visions, visions in people's heads of Karl Rove spending $50 million funded by people we don't know to attack candidates for reasons we're not sure of and never putting their name to it." Republicans were unpersuaded. "This bill is a partisan effort, pure and simple, drafted behind closed doors by current and former Democrat campaign committee leaders," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, the GOP Senate leader. "And it's aimed at one thing and one thing only: this bill is about protecting incumbent Democrats from criticism ahead of November." Schumer was chairman of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, which is responsible for maximizing the party's chances in Senate races, before stepping asi more

Resolved Question: I see that bt are increasing their prices. do you think they are out and out fraudsters?

the quarterly line rental is going up £1-50p a quarter. the charges for calls by 10%. If you pay quarterly they charge you £4-50 extra. If by some mistake like being on holiday when the bill arrives and you dont pay within 10 days well thats another £7-50p on top. They have been advertising how cheap it is with bt over the last 3 months and have probably reeled in an extra 300,000 customers over the that period knowing full well what they were going to do. would you sooner trust a snake in the grass than bt.guy on the other hand they put in 1 telegraph pole in an estate took 20 lines from it charge each customer £120 a year line rental for last 50 years thats £120,000 and it probably cost them £50 to erect. more

Resolved Question: Anyone else with babies 10 months apart?

Hi, My two children were born 10 months apart, I fell pregnant only 3-4 weeks after giving birth to my firstborn. Crazy huh! I was breastfeeding and still fell pregnant, who would have thought! They are now 12 months and 22 months, they will both be in the same year at school. I think they are called 'Irish Twins'. Does anyone else have their children this close? I have had a really hard time the past 2 years. My oldest (the 22 month old) still wakes up every hour, but he has been like this since birth, he use to wake up every 20 minutes. Our youngest (the 12 month old) will sleep through the night without a peep. So I have been sleep deprived for 2 years now. On top of that we live on an Island with NO daycare. We don't have grandparents to mind them (my parents live 6 hours away) and my partners parents live overseas. We don't know anyone on this Island so it's just me and the littlies day and night without a break. I feel like I am at breaking point. I feel like it's harder than having twins, because up until recently they were on different feeding and sleeping times, different food and formula etc. It's been a nightmare, then to top it off I am trying to run my taxation business from home (I am not advertising for new clients, but I still need to keep my current clients otherwise I will lose them all), so here I am by myself, on an Island, looking after a 12mth old and 22mth old trying to do tax returns and everything else. I need a holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.. and just for the record lol I am NOT a sex addict like someone suggested. Actually quite the opposite! And wtih a 12 month old and 22 month old who we both co-sleep with we hardly get time to hug each other let alone do anything else. I suppose it was the fact that we hadn't had sex for about 6 months before the birth so that's why we got pregnant again straight away lol more

Resolved Question: Can my landlord legally do this?

I live in WI and my landlord makes us pay $75 more than the original advertised rent. When we called to inquire we were told $875 and when we did all the paperwork etc to move in he asked us to pay $950 as an incentive to 'keep the place nice'. He even asked if we would pay a double security deposit that would have equaled $2000! We told him we couldn't afford a $2000 deposit but agreed to the $950 for rent (not the smartest idea I know, but my previous landlord was snooping and staying in my apt when I wasn't home. I was desperate to get outta there.) He pretty much all but said that he was hesitant to approve us for the house because of the kids (we have four) but since we agreed to pay more and assured him that we wouldn't trash the place we were allowed to move in. Anyways, after moving in we discovered that our neighbors (we live in a duplex) have four kids too! I talked to them and found out that they only pay $875, so needless to say I was pissed. I will have a hard time proving it as well since he asked us to pay $875 via money order or check but to just bring the other $75 to him in cash. I should have became suspicious then but like I said, I needed to get me and my kids away from the pervert landlord. On top of all that he's done a few other questionable things since we've lived here. A neighbor kid was over playing one day and he broke a closet door. When I told my landlord about it, he not only didn't believe that my kids didn't do it but he charged me to fix it. I have no problem paying for the new track that had to be put in but he also charged me for the labor. What am I paying him extra money for if he's still gonna charge me everytime something needs repair? He was here for one hour fixing it and the part only cost $22 but he charged me $65 for his time! Two weeks ago the grass was a little long for his liking even though we just cut the grass the week before, and he showed up himself and cut it and then charged us $20. There is an area of the yard that we and the neighbors on the other side have to take turns cutting which the landlord also cut. I told him that it was the neighbors turn for the other side and so he then charged us only $10 and said he would get the other $10 from them. I just talked to the neighbors yesterday and they were never charged for the grass being cut! My neighbors and my landlord are white and we are not, so I'm almost positive that this is discrimination based not only on race but on familial status as well. The only time I've heard of it being ok to pay additional rent is when a pet is involved. Is this man comparing me and my family to animals? What if anything can be done about this? Is this legal?I'm not really looking for opinions from people who speak to others in a way they would never actually do in person. I'm aware that grass grows, but when I'm at work and come home to cut grass, I was hardly given the opportunity to take care of my own responibilities. If I cut it the week before why wouldn't I do it again the following week? That still doesn't explain why only we were charged. I guess me being the common denominator in landlord issues means I asked for my landlord to come into and sleep in my apt when I'm not home! Thank God for my nanny cam! I'm looking for actual legal answers, so if you have no knowledge of that then please don't waste your time. Also, please don't be offended by my use of the word white. I honestly didn't think it would offend anyone. If the landlord isn't doing anything wrong then why does he request only some of the money strictly in cash? I guess there's nothing suspect about that.In case I forgot to mention, the advertised rent for this property was $875, only after meeting us was it raised to $950. The amount of rent on the lease says $875. The remaining $75 is and always has been paid in cash upon the landlords request. And what's with all the hostility? Whatever happened to just answering someone's question? Don't take it personal. We aren't ghetto tenants in any sense of the word. I've always paid him on time and taken care of any charges owed to him promptly. What's wrong with making sure I'm not being taken advantage of by my landlord? I would hope you would all do the same. more

Resolved Question: Anyone else smell the fear at ESPN?

They paid a bundle for the American broadcast rights to the World Cup, and now they can't get anyone to watch. The ratings are going to be huge everywhere else in the world. They have been hyping it endlessly for the last couple of months, both directly and subliminally. It has been advertised directly, which is to be expected, but they've also taken to more subtle things like having the 'Top 10 Plays Of The Day', include at least 2 goals being scored somewhere in the world, or an 8 minute sidebar story about the controversy over how the new ball is constructed. I'm not saying this is good or bad. I just find it interesting. Apparently, the ESPN folks were late in realizing that it's going to be hard to get Americans passionately interested in any sport where the over/under is 1. more

Resolved Question: internet trading law question?

long story short, my other half ordered a pair of shoes through a website. it was in £, website had UK in it. only when the order confirmation came did we see it was charged in $ and the company was from china. when the shoes arrived we found they sent us the wrong shoes and not what we ordered. after 3 weeks of back and forth with them, they said they won't refund the money and won't give us their address to return the shoes, even though they advertise a 14 day money back guarantee. on top of that, the shoes are fake and not what they say they are. so we got in touch with the billing company who eventually saw that this was pointless and the money was refunded by them. the seller then promptly contacted us with his address saying we need to send the shoes back. but shipping is £10 to china for this and we already have been charged 2 foreign currency fees by the credit card company, so we are already £6 out of pocket. the china people don't want to pay for the postage even though it was their mistake and are saying that we have 2 days to return the shoes or they will take other steps. now i have never been in this situation before which is why i am here, hoping someone will be able to advise me on what i can do here or if they can actually cause me any trouble with this? thanks in advance guys and girls. any help would be appreciated.and to those of you who say 'that is what you get when you order from china' should read the question again. the company was posing as a UK company. UK address, products in £ sterling and no mention of china. please, i am looking for answers, not stupid comments more

Voting Question: Seen UK top 5 broadband rip-offs? & how best to deal with 'em? What do you think is the best deal? How 2 beat?

I put this in Politics as Govt promise to roll out superfast broadband Is there a corrupt angle? UK's top broadband rip-offs, together with a few ideas on how you can combat them. 1) Super-fast broadband You might think super-fast broadband sounds amazing. Lightning-fast deals via next-generation fibre technology allow you to surf the net at more than 5 times the usual speed (50Mb). Unfortunately, however, super-fast broadband generally comes with a much higher price tag than packages with standard connection speeds. And I think, at £40 a month, providers are ripping us off - especially when you take into account a 8Mb package with a 10GB usage limit can cost less than £6 a month. The fact is, unless you need faster speeds for things like watching internet TV or downloading HD movies regularly, these packages probably have far greater capability than you really need. If you're not a heavy user, paying the higher monthly cost is a waste of money, frankly. 2) Restrictions on download limits Many broadband providers boast of unlimited download limits, only to accompany these bold statements with a little asterisk which, on closer inspection directs you to a fair use policy that restricts the amount you can actually download. Fair use policies are often a get out of jail free card for providers which advertise unlimited download limits, only to impose penalties or other restrictions if you exceed a certain threshold. And, to make things even more complicated, finding out about your own download habits can sometimes feel like trying to break into Fort Knox. For example, when I called my own provider to ask them about my usage, I was only told that I ‘need not worry'. This ambiguous phrasing may make little difference in my case, but in some circumstances you'll only realise you've exceeded your fair usage limit when you get a warning from your provider – or worse, when a hefty bill lands on your doormat. If you want to gauge your surfing habits, this data usage calculator from Virgin is a nifty tool which will give you an idea of your own monthly usage, which you can then use to get the best plan for you. Alternatively, providers Be and O2 offer super-fast broadband with truly unlimited download limits. 3) Broadband without a landline. If you move into a property without a BT landline in place, it will cost you £124.99 to connect yourself to the outside world, plus £10.50 a month in line rental, unless you commit to an 18-month contract. If you don't fancy forking out all this just to get connected, one alternative is Virgin media which, providing you live in a cabled area, will connect you without the need for a BT line (£30 connection fee applies). In addition, some providers such as Tiscali make use of local loop unbundling (LLU) to bypass BT and offer inclusive line rental. LLU enables ‘local loops' (or put simply, the cable through which you receive your broadband) to be freed up so other providers can design their own broadband packages to provide alternative, and often cheaper services. The third way you can get connected to the internet without the need for a BT landline is via a dongle . Dongles provide a convenient way of getting online, though from experience provide much slower download speeds than conventional broadband. Check out my latest article on dongles . 4) Tag on the line This is one of the sneakiest ways broadband providers can stop you from switching easily. They put what's known as a 'tag' on your line, which is difficult to remove. When you run into trouble, they often point the finger at your landline provider, who then points the finger back at the broadband provider, and so on. What many people don't realise is that you have to talk to the provider you want to switch to and ask them to remove it. Luckily, Broadband Choices offers a handy list of numbers on its website to contact with regards to having a tag on your line. 5) Long contract terms Last but not least, contract lengths for broadband, and indeed your mobile phone are slowly creeping up, and these days you'll often have to sign an 18 and sometimes a 24 month contract in order to secure the best deals. However, there is light at the end of the broadband tunnel, and if you don't want to be tied into a lengthy contract, you could always opt for a provider which doesn't impose one. For example, you can now get one-month only contracts from providers like Plusnet and Zen, which enable you to switch at any time. Obviously, your broadband service is unlikely to be 100% perfect, 100% of the time, but hopefully these small tips will help you on your way to a smoother surfing experience. Resolved Question: Can Dominos advertise a delivery deal & then charge for delivery on top?

I ordered dominos pizza (tried to order online but it said my street doesn't exist) & used the coupon deals for delivery (for example "value pizza $6.95 delivery") with my order totalling $31.95. Then they told me it is $41.95 & when I queried this was told they charge a $10.00 delivery charge. The deals say for "delivery" So how can they charge on top of that? They had every excuse under the sun & even the delivery guy said I was wrong! more

Resolved Question: Rate this 1 - 10, 10 being so funny tears come out?

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two triple-a batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arch of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.?? AWESOME!!!? Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.?? Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right?! !?? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong??? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.? ? All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, "no possible way!"?? What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best...? ? I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, "don't do it master," reasoning that a one- second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button,?and?? HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!?? I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner , then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, "Do it again, stupid, do it again!"?? Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three-second burst would be considered conservative?? SON-OF-A-... That hurt like **% !!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. How did they get up there??? My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I'm still looking for my testicles! I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!! Still in shock!! P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!? "If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid." more

Voting Question: how can i reword this?

my daughter is driving while texting i have found these notes on the internet but i to make it so she understand im gonna have to reword this on i need help Texting on a cell phone is even more dangerous than talking. A study by Virginia Tech found that texting while driving on the highway increases the risk of having an accident twenty-three times. On average, a text message distracts a driver for about five seconds, which on a highway means about one-hundred yards. Off the highway, the University of Utah found that texting increases the risk eight times. 56% of teenagers admit to talking on their cell phones behind the wheel, while 13% admit to texting while driving. (Note: Because this information was given voluntarily by teens, actual cell phone use numbers may be much higher.) 48% of young Americans from 12-17 say they've been in a car while the driver was texting. 52% of 16- and 17-year-old teen drivers confess to making and answering cell phone calls on the road. 34% admit to text messaging while driving. In 2007, driver distractions, such as using a cell phone or text messaging, contributed to nearly 1,000 crashes involving 16- and 17-year-old drivers. Over 60% of American teens admit to risky driving, and nearly half of those that admit to risky driving also admit to text messaging behind the wheel. Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year. Almost 50% of all drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 are texting while driving. Over one-third of all young drivers, ages 24 and under, are texting on the road. Teens say that texting is their number one driver distraction. 'Texting' while driving is the act of composing, sending, or reading text messages, email, or making other similar use of the internet on a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, such as an automobile, truck, or train. The practice has been viewed by many people and authorities as dangerous. It has also been ruled as the cause of some motor vehicle accidents, and in some places has been outlawed or restricted people have to stop. Texting while driving leads to increased distraction behind the wheel. In 2006, Liberty Mutual Insurance Group conducted a survey with more than 900 teens from over 26 high schools nationwide. The results showed that 37% of students found texting to be "very" or "extremely" distracting. A study by the AAA discovered that 46% of teens admitted to being distracted behind the wheel due to texting. One example of distraction behind the wheel is the 2008 Chatsworth train collision which killed 25 passengers. The subsequent investigation revealed that the engineer had sent 45 text messages while operating the train. A 2009 experiment with Car and Driver magazine editor Eddie Alterman that took place at a deserted air strip showed that texting while driving had a greater impact on safety than driving drunk. While legally drunk, Alterman's stopping distance from 70 mph increased by 4 feet; by contrast, reading an e-mail added 36 feet, and sending a text added 70 feet.[1] In the UK in 2009 Gwent Police worked with film maker Peter Watkins-Hughes and production company Zipline Creative to create the graphic short film "Cow", as part of a campaign to stop texting while driving.[2] The film earned honors in the Advertising Age's weekly Creativity Top 5 videos [3] and became an overnight worldwide internet hit after being shown on the American news program The Today Show.[4] On August 29, 2007, Danny Oates was killed by a young driver of a car, allegedly texting while driving. The defense had argued that driver Jeffrey Woods had possibly suffered a seizure during the time of the accident. [10] On January 3, 2008, Heather Leigh Hurd was killed by a truck driver who allegedly was texting while driving. Her father Russell Hurd has been actively supporting a law in various U.S. states called Heather's Law that would prohibit texting while driving. [11] The 2008 Chatsworth train collision, which killed 25 people, and which occurred on September 12, 2008, was blamed on the operator sending text messages while operating the train.[12] In 2009, a crash on the MBTA Green Line of the Boston area was blamed on a driver who was texting. This occurred nearly a year after the Newton, Massachusetts rail accident, which occurred on May 28, 2008, and was blamed on the operator using a cell phone while operating the train. A day after talk show queen Oprah Winfrey focused on the dangers of texting while driving, two members of the Georgia House of Representatives introduced bills that would ban the practice. “Don’t tempt fate,” said Rep. Amos Amerson (R-Dahlonega), quoting Winfrey. “That text or call can wait.” Amerson and Rep. Allen Peake (R-Bibb County) introduced similar bills that will likely me more

Resolved Question: My teacher and National Day of Prayer?

ok so i have this teacher and shes a little on the older side and very traditional and religious. But in the past few weeks she has been taking at least 5-10 minutes out of our class time to talk about her religious group and how nice it would be if we would join it, so it kind of feels like she is pushing the whole religious concept on us. And to top that the other day she started to hand out little "flyers" to the class advertising her group that was gathering for national prayer day today. Do you think that this is pushing the limit of separation of church and state? And considering that my class is very diverse- there are baptist, christian, catholic, agnostics, atheists and all different religions in there, would you find this offensive if you were in my position? ps- Im an agnostic, we are in the US and she is retiring this year so their is really no point in reporting her but i just want to know if i have the right to be a little pissed off lol. (And sorry if my facts about religion arent exactly correct as you can see i dont really get involved in it lol)You guys do have a point but clubs are not like religion religion is so important to people i just feel like this should have been done outside of school or somewhere else i just dont feel its appropriate even if she was just suggesting it i mean how would you religious people feel if someone handed you a peice of paper saying "come join our group we are going to be worshiping satin today" ? it just seems odd to me. more

The Coca Cola Company (Coke) and Pepsico (Pepsi) must independently decide how much to spend on advertising this year (low, medium, or high advertising expenditures). Each firm's decision will affect its own profits, as well as profits of its competitor. The following payoff matrix shows the possible outcomes for this game between Coke and Pepsi. Here Coke is the row player and Pepsi the column player. Coke's available strategies are listed on the left (it can choose the rows labeled Low, Medium, or High). Resolved Question: How do I do a multiple regression in Excel using Data Analysis?

I really need help with this! Here is the problem....A large consumer products company wants to measure the effectiveness of different types of advertising media in the promotion of its products. Specifically, two types of advertising media are to be considered: radio advertising and newspaper advertising. A sample of 22 cities with approximately equal populations is selected for study during a test period of one month. Each city is allocated a specific expenditure level both for radio advertising and for newspaper advertising. The sale of the product (in thousands of dollars) and also the level of media expenditure (in thousands of dollars) during the test month are recorded in the following table: CitySalesRadioNewspaperCitySalesRadioNewspaper 19730401215774545 21119040131044500 3875252514914500 462525251513295525 591030301613305525 697130301714056030 793135351814366030 8117735351915216535 988240252017416535 1098240252118667040 11162845452217177040 Use multiple regression to analyze this data set. Attach your Excel output to your memo. Write your name on the grading rubric and attach on top of your memo. The following should be included in your memo to your instructor: 1)You have an additional thousand dollars to spend on advertising. To have the largest effect on sales, which form of advertising would you spend it on? Justify your answer using the regression results. 2)Evaluate the regression model. Is this a "good model"? Voting Question: How to market to another company's employees?

I'm in the writing stages of a business plan and I have narrowed down my target market. In my research I found the top 10 employers within the city where my company will be located. If I wanted to advertise to these companies employees directly, how would I do so? (The employers are 2 hospitals, numerous schools, including the school district administration, and 2 large consumer electronic companies.) Other then getting my business added to each individual companies "local discount" list for their employees, are there any other creative ways to advertise to them directly? Any ideas would be great. Thanks guys.AJ, You have it all wrong. Let me use an example. Let's say I want to open a restaurant in my city. Within my city I have the businesses mentioned before. Let's say I want to market to doctors, nurses, etc that work in the hospital around the corner. How do I get the doctors and nurses to come to my restaurant. How do i reach them directly? Resolved Question: Is the capacity of a front load washer really all that much more than that of a typical top loader?

My top-load Kenmore washer has about a 2.8 cu ft capacity (3.0 cu ft minus the space taken up by the agitator) and can wash about 10-12 pounds of laundry at one time. Most front-loaders advertise 3.5-4.2 cu ft capacity but don't say much about how many POUNDS of laundry can be washed at one time (and from what I've been reading, that seems to be a truer measure of a washer's capacity than cubic feet). What is your opinion/experience in terms of switching from a "large-capacity" top-loader to a front-loader? Do you think that if I switched, I'd be able to get a lot more laundry done at one time? more

Voting Question: When an advertiser wants to put up an add on your site..and asks you for a quote?

A site that I write for with a friend (We usually do some fairly popular "top 10 lists") have been getting some advertisers wanting to put up advertisements on our site. They usually ask us for a quote to put up an ad for the month. Some do just give us an offer. But when they do ask us for a quote, what should we give them? My friend (who shouldn't be handling the business side of things) told the last advertiser (a poker site!) that they can advertise for $25.00 a month which pissed me off. I said it should at least be $125.00/month with the amount of traffic this list gets that they want to put the ad up on. They never responded and I'm wondering if it's because we devalued ourselves so much by giving such a low-balled rate. The question is, what's a moderate amount of money an advertiser would want for a monthly quote? Porn in the USA: Conservatives Are Biggest Consumers 8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election By EWEN CALLAWAY Feb. 28, 2009 Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography. A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School. However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says. Political Divide Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm. That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest. The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says. Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32. Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Business/story?id=6977202&page=1 more

Resolved Question: Orange: Dolphin PAYG sim package question.?

With this package, if i top-up £10, i'll apparently get: 300 free texts worth £30 Free Facebook access worth £9* 2 for 1 cinema tickets every Wednesday worth £8** giving you a total value of £57 What do they mean by "giving you a total value of £57", i thought the top-up was £10 only? Surely if i was to attempt to go over my "£10 allowance", i'd be blocked to do so, so that i don't have to pay extra for web/text/calls usage outside my allowance, right? Another thing, the dolphin payg deal advertises itself as "free internet", yet when i checked for more details it says "Free Facebook access worth £9*", can anybody confirm if the deal only offers free facebook or can i actually browse the entire web for free? What about sending emails, is that free aswell or will i have to pay a fee? One more, what about calls, i didn't see any call "benefits" with the dolphin payg package, i think canary and racoon are probably best for that, but does anyone know how much minutes i'll get for calls? Or will i have to pay for that, per minute outside of this dolphin deal? Just wondered if anyone on the orange dolphin payg deal can help? Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: If deportation of all illegals crushes the Hispanic Market, do anti-immigration folks care?

And do they have a plan to cover those billions, maybe even trillions lost to the US economy? I ask about Hispanics/Hispanic Market because they seem to only focus on them. ================================== The Growing Hispanic Market in the United States Virtually every type of company and organization in the United States is being impacted by the growth of the Hispanic population. You see it in government, healthcare, manufacturing, food service, construction, education, finance, legal, and these are just a few examples. Marketing and selling to the U.S. Hispanics has become so important that universities are offering programs on the subject. Florida State University has recently created a center for Hispanic marketing communications offering graduate certificates and undergraduate minor programs. Following are some facts for consideration: U.S. Hispanic purchasing power has surged to nearly $700 billion and is projected to reach as much as $1 trillion by 2007, nearly three times the overall national rate over the past decade. (Source: HispanTelligence®.) The top areas where Hispanics spend more than non-Hispanics are: groceries, telephone services, furniture, men’s and boys apparel, children’s clothing and footwear. (Source: Selig Center.) The U.S. Hispanic market ranks as the third largest “Latin American economy” behind Brazil and Mexico. There are more Hispanics living in the United States, than the entire population of Canada, which is 32.5 million. (Source: U.S. Census.) We are like a country within a country. Hispanic advertising by U.S. companies grew 24 percent in 2003, compared with 8.6 percent for the general market. (Source: Media Economics Group, research firm that tracks Spanish-language marketing.) By mid-century, 25 percent or one out of every four people in the United States will be Hispanic. The African American population by mid-century will remain at the current rate of 13 percent of the total United States population. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau.) An IRS report predicts that 1 out of every 10 small businesses will be Hispanic by the year 2007. Today the proportion stands at 1 in 13 and rising.
