Open Question: Where to get home repair grants?

I am not old enough to get senior grants and I am on disability so I can't pay someone (and I have had calls from people willing to look for grants for me if I pay them money each month they search) to search for grants for me. I don't get enough money for a loan and have bad credit. I don't even have enough money to eat right let alone pay back a loan. I don't know how those television (like fix this house) work. They never say if you have to pay for it or if they do it. Anyway, I live where grant money is scarce and I could probably ask every celebrity out there for help and get no reply. I need a new roof and flooring as well as an electrical box for my dryer, also a new garage door. I live by myself and have advertised for a housemate but there is only one bedroom on main floor and the two upstairs are full of storage stuff and junk which I cannot get anyone to help fix them up for bedrooms. I need help! I don't know what the community guidelines are. I just know that I have been to county commissioner who sent me to department of development who had me fill out papers for(she said) a grant with the USDA Rural Development (they were loan papers and I was turned down. I wrote them myself and was told I wasn't old enough to get help from them and did not have enough money to pay back a low interest loan from them which I already knew or wouldn't be trying to find a grant). more

Resolved Question: Helping my nephew with some homework assignment need help so I know how to explain it to him.?

Any help would be greatly appreacted. Thank you. The advertising agency promoting the new Breem dishwashing detergent wants to get the best exposure possible for the product within the $95,200 advertising budget ceiling placed upon it. To do so, the agency needs to decide how much of the budget to spend on each of its two most effective media: (1) television spots during the afternoon hours and (2) large ads in the city's Sunday newspaper. Each television spot costs $3,200; each Sunday newspaper ad costs $1,300. The expected exposure, based on indsutry ratings, is 30,000 viewers for each television commercial and 20,000 readers for each newspaper advertisment. The agency director, Mavis Early, knows from experience that its important to use both media in order to reach the broadest spectrum of potentioal Breem customers. She decides that at least 5 but no more than 10 television spots should be ordered and that the number of newspaper ads should be no more than 8 times the number of television spots. How many times should each of the two media be used to otain maximum exposure while staying within the budget? more

Resolved Question: Which is better: XBOX 360 or PC? *PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION FIRST, OR MOST OF IT...*?

I know! I know! I know that PC's have much better graphics! I don't need a whole article on how Fallout 3 looks gorgeous on a PC compared to an XBOX 360... Here's the point: I have both systems, a high end PC and XBOX 360, and enjoy playing on both. However, I have noticed that the number of players is rising on XBOXs these days, and I was wondering why that is... I created this question to not only say what I love about both, but to hear why everyone else chooses which they prefer... Here are MY views on things: I love both PC and console gaming, but I would hate to double up on all my games, for instance, I have already bought 2 versions of all of the Call of Duty games, one on XBOX and one on PC. As you may know, this is not only expensive but redundant. I understand that these are hard times for everyone, and that is why there are more console gamers appearing than there have been in a while: in order to play a cool PC game with good graphics, you need a pretty nice PC, which can cost anywhere from $400 - $4000, not including monitor, headset, speakers, etc. while it can cost only fractions of that by buying an XBOX 360, only $200 - $300 for the actual console, not including the television setup, speakers, etc. and have not as good graphics, but a fun and memorable experience nonetheless. I am fortunate enough to have both, but I threw it out there for reference. Most of my friends rave about their XBOXs and the games they have, and I want to play those games with them, but I would much prefer using a mouse and keyboard over a controller for most of the games XBOX offers. I do not hate the controller, I am just a bigger fan of the mouse and keyboard, as it delivers crisp and precise movements and control over the XBOX controller. I LOVE XBOX LIVE, everything about it is awesome, the free ("free" with a $50 Gold XBOX LIVE subscription) IGN Insider Moves, OXM, Major's Minute, the whole lot, but I love Steam as well. Not only does Steam offer many killer deals on games and have mega sales on almost everything, STEAM IS FREE! I love when I come home from buying an XBOX game, slip the game into the console and play it, without any installation or waiting, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. I could care less where I played, whether on a couch or a comfy chair, but I enjoy playing on the same console with my friends, which is impossible on a PC. I am a big fan of the PC's highly advertised "Free DLC" through updates and patches, vs paying $10 - $15 for XBOX DLC. However, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for the PC has tested my patience and appreciation for Steam games, as I have run into many hackers and cheaters that ruin the game for everyone. Dedicated servers are awesome, as you can find any match you wanted: gametype, map, mods, player numbers, hardcore/normal health, etc. and join that game in an instant. But playing in a lobby adds a dimension of unknown and uncertainty (Who am I playing with? What is the next map?) which is also different and enjoyable. In my honest opinion, both the PC and XBOX 360 are pretty evenly matched in terms of fun, playability and entertainment, but as of right now, and the foreseeable future, I think that most of my time will be spent on my PC, as it is (in my opinion), and has been, the best way to play video games. There, I have written my essay, the point I'm trying to make is: Which do YOU think is better: the PC, or the XBOX 360, and WHY?I'm sorry that I wrote so much, and many of you won't bother to read what I wrote. All I am trying to ask is which system do you perfer to play games and why? I just wrote that "essay" to spread my thoughts on the matter. It's just a topic I find interesting and I wanted to see what other people thought about it... that's all... more

Resolved Question: Why can't they find a way to use targeted advertising on television?

This is what makes television advertising so annoying. Besides the stupidity they like to employ, people are always seeing ads for products they are not in the market for or never use. For instance, I doubt if a household of three males needs to see ads for Tampax, Cover Girl MakeUp more

Voting Question: CV advice! Need awesome people to help me please? Retail.?

Hey, I graduated last year with an excellent Film and Television with Professional and Creative Writing degree. Obviously the job market has been ultra poor, so i've done some temp admin jobs and youth work volunteering to keep me doing something constructive. I walked round town tonight and saw a few retail places advertising for sales assistants. I would be so happy to work anywhere right now and these jobs seem cool. MY PROBLEM is my CV. I have had at least three years of retail experience many years before uni and done temporary roles here and there throughout studying, but seriously how should I present my CV for a retail job? I don't want people to look at it and think that i'm not serious about the role, especially when they see my degree. I'm a really creative person that just wants a nice friendly job, my degree kind of helps with my hobby which is writing. Any advice would be most welcomed as I'm writing a new CV tonight. Oh yes and i'm 26 so fairly 'mature'ish :-D more

Voting Question: What's the big deal with sex?

Society is full of sex. It's in advertising, movies, television, novels, clothing, everything. If you do anything considered awkward, you are told that you'll never find a girl/boyfriend that way. Resolved Question: Would you like to purchase Rye Whiskey from the George Washington Estate?

The Mount Vernon Estate began to re-make the rye whiskey our first President made, approximately two years ago. The estate earned a liquor license in order to sell the product from the distillery they began to make once again. Likely there were political reasons as to why they decided not to sell the whiskey to visitors in anything other than the small shot types of bottles. This past week (and after much inside griping) the Estate decided to sell the whiskey in pint bottles. Thinking that they had enough to sell and still keep some on reserve for later sales the only adverstising that went along with this was a brief local television "interest" news story. Well, the inside gripers can proudly say "we told you so". The Estate sold all of the Rye Whiskey in pint bottles in under 3 hours. The cost? A whopping $85.00 a bottle. This product is made in the exact same way that George Washington made it himself; with the exception that (and to the chagrin of experts) a slight coloring product is added in the last phase - else the Rye Whiskey would be clear. The product would have sold faster than the 3 hours it took except that the credit card machine the Estate was using "burned out" in the first hour. LOL! I am providing a link to the site below to the Distillery as it is about 2 miles from the actual Estate and is in the same location it was more than two centuries ago. The second link is to the Estate itself if you are interested. Have a great day! Distillery: http://www.mountvernon.org/learn/pres_ar… Estate: http://www.mountvernon.org/ By the way, if you go to the "shopping" section the rye whiskey is not advertised. :(The employees wanted to sell the product much sooner than what they did. I think they need to make more as there is now a demand for the historical brew. more

Voting Question: Marxists the believe the media should be regulated and use the excuse of porn on TV?

Isn't nudity shown on television in socialist western Europe? Wouldn't companies refuse to advertise on television stations that show pornography like they already do on cable? Why do you ignore facts like this as an excuse to push for your legislation when cable channels have the capability to show porn all they want but don't because they're afraid of losing money from sponsorships? Don't facts and reality make regulation of the media pointless?Pretending like you don't see a question. How cute. Unfortunately there are several. So pick one or all and answer.I did answer the question. Cable channels will not show porn, not because they can't, but because if they do they will lose money and sponsor ship. The answer is: No, I don't want porn on TV. But regulation will be pointless and we do have free speech and should be allowed to say whatever we want, even if it's a "lie" aka the truth about socialism. more

Resolved Question: Who knows what this commercial is for?

Resolved Question: Why are some direct response tv paid programming not identified/labeled as such?

I recently learned about a company that purchases 30 minute ads (buys in bulk to look like a regular season) that airs once per week. The production company was not commissioned by the network to make the programming (the network didn't buy it from them), but makes this "television show" with different content every week and sells advertising to sponsors (so they are acting like the network) Why is it that at the bottom of the screen, unlike the pro-active or treadclimber infommercials which read "paid programming" this show comes up as "name of show" in the guide and info? more

Resolved Question: Could you please help me with my English composition?

Hello! I'm taking CPE2 classes and I've always had problems with compositions... I am trying to improve it, and that's why I'm asking for help. I must use a more appropriate and elaborated vocabulary. As I love british English I thought it would be better to ask you =D The proposal is: You have seen a commercial on your local TV station which appeard during a children's programme. You feel that an advertisement of this type is not suitable for showing on children's TV. Write a letter of complaint to the television company, explaing why you object to it and what you would like them to do about it. It must have 300-350 words. This is my rough draft: Dear Sir, I am writing to complain about the clothes advertisement currently being displayed on the children's TV channel, between one and other cartoon. The advertisement shows a girl, actually a young teenager wearing inappropriate clothes, with a high level of sexual insinuation. I feel that this claim is really irresponsible. For a start, this kind of clothing is unacceptable for a teenager. The advertisers also seem to have forgotten that it is been displayed on a children's TV channel. In my view, this type of advertising only encourages children to act like adults. Furthermore, the advert suggests that in order to be popular girls have to act in a unscrupulous way. I would argue that this can only encourage those children to maintain a kind of a sensual image. The kind of behaviour that you are encouraging is totally destructive, children might lose the best part of their childhood trying to be someone that there are not. Don't you think children's advertisement should encourage them to study, to have healthy habits? May I request that you have this advertisement taken down as soon a possible? While I have no objection to clothes being advertised, I feel strongly that this type if advertisement should not be allowed. I have already written to the company concerned, requesting that they remove this advertisement from their campaign and giving them my reasons in detail. I look forward to hear from you. Yours faithfylly, Amy more

Resolved Question: Spiritually speaking...what does God think of children using video games?

Alright...so this is totally not a religious question...but this section is (most of the time) so much more level-headed and responsive than others. I said most of the time...lol. This question was added in the parenting section the other day : "At what age do you think is appropriate for a child to have a video game system like a nintendo DS?" The majority of the responses were listing ages...some of the ages being very young. And here was MY response : "I HATE video games for kids. I'm convinced that television and game systems, combined with parents who don't moderate their usage are the main cause of the spike in childhood obesity, attention deficit disorders, and aggression issues we are seeing today. Even DVD's like Baby Einstein are advertised for babies as young as 3 months....WHY? Don't get me wrong...I watch television, and I can appreciate that they are making educational games now, but why should I put my 6 month old in front of the TV to learn where their hands, feet, and facial features are when I can lay her on my lap and teach her the same thing myself? Kids seem to be so electronically stimulated today that half the time they are bored when the game plays out...and I think most parents give in because the TV is an easy babysitter. Whatever happened to the days of imagination and building forts?" Two thumbs ups...NINE thumbs down. It's because I said "hate",isn't it? My actual question is this: How young is too young, and how do you feel video games and television for children have adversely or positively children of today compared to when most of us were children? more

Voting Question: McDonald's ran a television ad targeting the gay community in France............?

I liked the ad; it showed a father & his closeted gay son in a McDonald's restaurant....and it showed the gay son calling his boyfriend on the phone...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBuKuA9nHsw I liked it, I thought it was a cute ad. but apparently; Some of the LGBT groups are criticizing McDonald's.......... http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/McDonalds-on-both-sides They feel that McDonald's is being hypocritical in the sense that they are airing pro-LGBT ads in France, a place where homosexuality is generally accepted by the community............. but they never show pro-LGBT ads in America........a place that is known to be prejudice against gays. They are criticizing McDonald's for trying to portray themselves as pro-LGBT......ONLY in places where it is popular. and then abandoning that position in places where it's unpopular. Ok.......as much as I love those LGBT groups.................I have a tendency to defend McDonald's here. In the USA, McDonald's didn't air any ads that were anti-lgbt. Being silent doesn't mean they're against LGBT rights. Being silent means they're neutral. You can't criticize them for being neutral. They're allowed to be neutral. There's no rule that their advertising has to be the same around the world. What do you think? more

Voting Question: Is this a good plan for my college studies (advertising)?

Resolved Question: I need advising for a Fine Arts Major!?

This fall 2010 I start college. I was accepted in the fine arts, major in media arts (filming/television). I really like filming and the creativeness it takes. Also because it's easier to get employed than other fine arts. Anyways, what I enjoy most is performing. I like to perform singing and dancing. I'm a mostly a "Put-on-a-show" kind of person. Sort of like Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson's shows. My goal in life is to pursue a recording artist career. I would also like to act in film. Now that I'm realizing this, I don't know if I should change major. Every time I see a concert or something like a show I get very excited and wish I could do it! The university I'm going to (University of Arizona) has an AMAZING performing arts program. Whenever I see them advertising their new upcoming musicals and dance showcases, my heart beats really fast! So I need help on what to do for my future. Should I major in media arts and minor in music (voice) or should I change my major to theatre arts where I can do musical theatre. If I want to do musical theatre, I can't minor in anything. If you have any tips, please help me! I've always been a straight forward, I know what I want to do in life, kind of person. But now this is making me think otherwise. more

when it comes to your taste buds are you the type of person who likes the same kinds of foods and drinks as most people or do you have more unusual taste buds? example: most people prefer flavors that have been around for a long time. their favorite soda is usually pepsi, coke, mountain dew, dr. pepper, 7up or root beer. while other people prefer stuff that's most likely not advertised on television and some people might not have even heard of. soda flavors like sunkist cherry limeade, peach nehi, tahitian treat, or baja blast mountain dew. which one of these sounds more like you? p.s. i don't know why but i just thought i'd use soda as an example. more

Resolved Question: Why are people against smoking Marijuana?

I myself have smoked before, however I have not touched weed in about 6 months give or take. When I smoked I would go from a week long binge to having a dry spell for a couple of weeks. I smoked for a total of about 2 years and I never had any issues with my responsibilities, like school for example. I actually kept a 3.6 GPA and I never tried any other drugs except drinking. So, personally I find no issues with marijuana unlike what many people will tell you (It makes you stupid. It leads to harder drugs. It takes over your life. It's addictive.). Now I will rant. Ok, so I know it's addictive. I'm not going to deny that. However, it's certainly less addictive than something like cocaine or even caffeine. And yes, caffeine will cause withdrawal symptoms not unlike nicotine withdrawal. While marijuana can cause psychological dependence, marijuana does NOT have any physical withdrawal symptoms. I had absolutely no issue when I quit, and I only wanted to smoke for about the first week. After the first week I have no longer felt any desire to smoke up, except for the fact that I occasionally just want to wind down and enjoy myself on a joint. Now, the government has a completely legalized industry for alcohol, which by the way messes you up MUCH more than marijuana. And I know that you people who have never tried marijuana often find this very difficult to believe, but just ask your self this. Have you ever seen somebody get so high that they were too dizzy to stand up and walk straight? Have you ever seen somebody smoke up and then puke their guts out all night from weed poisoning? No and no. marijuana will simply chill somebody out or get their heart racing. It depends on the strain, but in either case, nobody is overdosing or seeing double. That's saved for the completely legal alcoholic drinks that are advertised all over the television. Also, marijuana has never killed anyone. And I mean anyone. Of course, you can say that people will get into their cars and crash, but have you ever thought of how people get into their cars and crash all of the time, while they're completely sober? Besides, there are studies that have shown marijuana usually makes somebody a more cautious driver and getting high is equal to about a .05 BAC (.08 is the legal limit for alcohol). Now, I'm sure that some mom is going to come on here and talk about how because of weed their kid does heroin or whatever. I don't know how this myth got started, but I believe the number is something like only 1 out of every 30-40 people who have tried marijuana will go on to use any other illegal substance. And from my own experience, the only people who actually went on to use heroin or coke actually talked about that BEFORE they ever tried marijuana. No joke. Most people understand the consequences of hard drugs and see what it can do to a person's life, and so they stay away. It's that simple. I think that my favorite myth is that marijuana makes you stupid. Right. How about you go tell that to my formerly A.P. student friends (now off to college) which would get SAT scores up in the 2000s. Yea if that isn't proof enough right there, here's something else for you. Marijuana has not been proven to kill any brain cells. In fact, studies have shown that it actually STIMULATES brain cell growth. I **** you not. It only takes a quick Google search. Now when people say that marjuana will take over your life, I believe that they must be referring to the far and in between cases where people actually did let marijuana take over their life. What those same people don't realize though is that they probably know loads of people that smoke weed, or have smoked weed, but that never let it take over their life. The thing is though is that you will never hear about it because that's just not something you would talk about with a co-worker or a neighbor. Most functioning people can handle smoking a little bit of marijuana once in a while, the SAME WAY people can have a beer or a glass of wine every once in a while. Now, my final point, which is probably my most important is, what has a marijuana user ever done to you? Nothing, that's what. And it's because somebody who smokes weed is not going to need it like somebody who snorts coke. It's just not in any way addictive like that. Nobody is going to mug somebody else because they're killing for a nickle ($5 dollars worth of weed). However, you probably could get mugged by somebody because they need their fix of crack. In my eyes, people who reject marijuana users are just plain tools that they think they have a duty to protect a society that knows more than them. If you people want my advice, go educate yourself and stop letting yourself be influenced by all of that propaganda you thought was the truth. You really said health concerns? Really? Obviously completely ignored my post. And yea I'm sure it way to painful for you to try and read something about a plant that is in the process of getting LEGALIZED. Prick.Oh and I don't care if you don't feel like reading my super-post just so long as you don't say something as stupid as "health concerns?"to Kris, I don't know what that guy was smoking, but it wasn't weed, I can tell you that. Not even mushies would made you suddenly come down to find yourself surrounded by guns. Sounds more like he was smoking some wet, which is weed dipped in PCP. more

Resolved Question: What UK television advert do you hate the most?

Two issues. For most of us I guess its got to be that horrible annoying "Go Compare" advert I mean its been going on since last August as if Go Compare haven't got the message that no one likes it. I also hate the "We buy any car advert" its just so annoying! I turn off the sound when either them comes on. I wish those two were banned ASAP! Secondly on my day off I watched daytime TV and lost count of the number of adverts advertising funerals and what to do when you die etc as well as umpteen insurance adverts. I mean do TV adverts have to be so down right miserable? Why can't we have cheerful adverts like the Coca Cola advert or fun adverts, does annoyone remember the 'carling label' advert in the 1980s with the cowboys in the supermarket? Why have adverts got to be either so miserable or annoying. Any ideas? Personally I can't stand the TV adverts of today.I agree with @Vix Sheilas wheels is horrible, but some how the "lets face music and dance, life insurance" did not seem as miserable as the afternoon death adverts people have forced on them. Maybe back in the 1990s we did not have so many miserable ads! more

Resolved Question: Why do you people believe in everything on television?

I am talking about the majority of people not all. I have done a research project on this subject in college because this is a huge issue. Television is ran by 6 major companies. They will not allow anything to show on television without there approval. They are the face of what educates peoples minds and imaginations. T.V shows such as DR. Phill, Tyra Banks all away to Family Guy and all that other bull shit shows only breed future pedophiles, child molesters, criminals and depressed individuals in the future (not all). They show kids wearing make up and mini skirts, kids cussing and talking about sex, advertising speeding on a fast car when its illegal, majority of the shows on television is white people, all the black people shows make them look like bad people, almost every girl is almost naked, ect... List goes on and on. I wonder why some of you people take television too far like its reality when in fact its not and its only hurting your imagination and thought process. I would like to hear from you. When I say breeding future pedo's it may sound far fetched to the average joe, but when you train a kids eyes and mind from a child to an adult its hard to teach them out of it. You can see many criminals that get locked up say there role models were people on movies (scare face, ect) or there favorite game was call of duty, or pedo's saying they cant resist the way kids are because maybe that pedo never grew up. Your not a pedo if your the same age as that person..I knew I would come across some ignorant people on here. People with ignorant answers are the victims to this as well. I am only here to spread awareness and see the minds of you victims as well. more

HELP! I'm doing a debate and I was put on a team supporting the ban of ads on television. I need some hard facts and killer points to win this debate!! However, I do need to know what they could use against me in the rebuttal and question period. If you could please give pro and cons for banning television ads, i'd really appreciate it. Some things i've thought of: cons: ads waste time and electricity, decreased self esteem, provokes you to lose money.. pros: notify you of events (how am i suppose to attack this one?!?), charities, assistance, shows you options... THANKS IN ADVANCE :)ohh.. yeah i made a mistake. I'm against public announcements on television. ALL of them. I know: It sucks. But thnks for the help. :) more

Voting Question: does anyone know which movie this is? (not the movie gladiator)?

It is an action movie that reminded me a lot about 300. It is about gladiators or some type of warriors that fight in a ring and I think I saw it advertised either on television as coming soon to blu ray or on the movie law abiding citizen. Anyways at the end of the trailer some guy jumped in the air and spun and came down to attack someone with a spear or knife, then the trailer ended. it was really cool. I just cant find the name of the movie. I know that it is not the following, clash of the titans, legion, 300, and pathfinder. should be realtivly new movie 2009 to 10 more

Resolved Question: Have you ever been burned by false advertising?

I recently answered an ad for a "new 2 bedroom apartment, furnished, stores downstairs, in quiet neighborhood". The place was far from new. Only had 1 bed in each bedroom,a very old television, no phone, no internet connection, A/C was old and noisy, Only 2 chairs in front room. No sofa, no stove, no fridge and no table. The store down stairs was just an open air out door table and shelves with an assortment of small items. Quiet neighborhood was because it was so far from anything. Ocean view was a maybe on a clear day with binoculars. What a ripoff. Taxi was 200 Pesos from airport and probably the scenic route. It was advertised for 5000 Pesos + utilities. per month. With 2 months advance deposit. Seriously, I don't know why I answered this ad. Maybe because I am new and do not know any better and just thought it was a good deal.Wishful thinking. more

Resolved Question: How do I get rid of this?

Um, my computer is doing this really weird thing where it keeps looping audio from a television commercial advertising stuff. I keep hearing about Woolite, acne solutions... it stops for a few minutes, then plays again. There's no media program open, and there's no windows open in my browser (it would do it even with everything closed)... help?I got the mal-ware program, it found 33 things one time, removed those, said some couldn't be removed. Ran it again, found nine more, those were removed. I'm getting windows popping up when it boots up now that weren't there before. I also did unplug it while it was chatting away, to show my room-mate what was going on, and it was still going. more

Resolved Question: BO has appointed an "excessive" pay Czar...Does he get to take money from people who BO thinks make too much?

What if GWB appointed an anti-entitlement Czar? Would the liberals have gone nuts over this? The pursuit of happiness and the acquisition of wealth and property are as integral to capitalism as the products advertised on television. But President Obama would have Americans believe that this activity is inherently evil and must be curbed. Obama has appointed a czar to oversee what he deems "excessive" pay. And according to President Obama, there is a point at which someone has "enough" money. Assuming Obama's premise is correct, who is he to make such a determination? Who is Congress? These men and women are public servants, not public masters, as noted by financial commentator Thomas Sowell. Moreover, these individuals long ago made "enough" -- with President Obama President Obama raking in over $5 million this year. Kenneth R. Feinberg is his name. more
