The best answers will get 10 points PROPAGANDA EXPLICATION Propaganda is a tool that is used to shape opinion and influence the behaviour of the common people. Democratic nations such as the U.K. and the U.S. have used propaganda extensively in the past when they felt the need to get the support of the public for a significant purpose. Propaganda became a major industry: using famous actors, directors, artists and writers to persuade people easily and effectively. Governments commissioned everything from feature length films, to short stories that appeared in popular magazines. But the medium that most clearly illustrated the massive effort to educate and convince the public was the propaganda poster. The posters did many things. They announced messages such as “Join the Army.” They recruited women into auxiliary forces such as the WAAC (Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps). They encouraged factory workers to increase industrial production. They promoted conservation of gasoline, meat, rubber, canned foods, office supplies and more. They warned both soldiers and civilians against accidently divulging war information with the message ‘Know your Place, Shut your face.” Above all, the posters asked people to “Buy War Bonds.” To be effective, the posters had to catch and hold the viewers eye. The war propaganda poster that I have recreated is a popular type of white war propaganda. The U.S. Army had created the poster during the World War II, when the Americans were facing economic problems due to the Great Depression. The poster is directed towards the general public citizens of America and its main purpose is to recruit soldiers to assist America during the war. The poster that I have created is an allusion to Uncle Sam’s poster “I Want You” and has pastiche to Lord Kitchener’s poster. They all incorporate a set of similar propaganda techniques such as patriotism, common man approach, censorship, direct order, and assertion. All the posters also, incorporate a series of similar symbols that further facilitate in conveying the importance of conscription to the wider American public. The first main technique that I have used is the techniques of patriotism. The red and blue U.S. flag that is shown in the background of the poster is a symbol for patriotism. Through this symbol, the poster appeals to the people’s sense of patriotism and is calling upon them to join the war. This technique is very much similar to Uncle Sam’s poster, as patriotism is symbolised though the usage of the blue hat with crests of stars and this, gives importance to the national symbol of America. The posters further reinforce the fact that patriotism was an important value among the stereotypical Americans during the 40’s. My poster slogan, “We Need You” uses a direct order technique and this suggests possession and belonging towards the Americans. It appeals to common man’s sense of pride. “We” also represents the power of unity in America. In Uncle Sam’s poster, the usage of the word “You” is directed to a single reader. It suggests individualism being an imperative value for the Americans. Both the slogans assert the importance of conscription in the U.S. army. The main figure in this poster is a depleted soldier, who is a symbol of hope and valour for American community. This figure was deliberately used to inspire many young Americans, to view him as their heroes and, brainwash them to join the army. The transfer technique, is reinforced in this poster, with the usage of the American flag on the soldiers face; posturising him to be surrounded in an aura of patriotism. The soldier is an allusion to Alvin York, a famous American soldier during the World War II. Alvin was presented the medal of honour for leading an attack on the German machine gun nest. Similarly, I have also implemented pastiche in my poster; the soldier in my poster is conscripting upon American civilians to join him in the war and is very similar to the British Lord Kitchener propaganda poster. In his poster, Kitchener is conscripting the British civilians to join him in the war though the slogan “Wants You.” Kitchener was an imperative British Field Marshal and played a key role for Britain in The Battle of Omdurman. The commoners in Britain were inspired by Lord Kitchener, and to them; he was characterised as a symbol of authority and national optimism for victory. Images of soldiers in the background, looking blissfully content indicate a sense of brotherhood among them. They are a symbol of unity and equality. The usage of the U.S. flag and the soldiers promote a glorified view about the war. During the 1940’s, the U.S. implemented censorship in order to boost the morale of people; and it is this technique that I have used in my poster to conceal the negative side effects of war. If the people knew the true horrors of the battle, their attitudes towards the war would change immediately; causing a decrease in recruitments ( more
