Open Question: HELP WITH MASTERS DISSERTATION METHODOLOGY-Thanks so much!?

Hi All, I realize turning to YA for this maybe a long shot, but I figured I would give it a go anyway. I'm currently writing a Masters level dissertation about Commercial Self Publishing and I need some help focusing my methodology chapter. My research question is centered around the concept of whether or not 'Commercial' Digital Self Publishers such as Authorhouse are representing themselves correctly based on the services they offer potential authors. For example, Lulu.com calls itself a self publisher, yet their listed business model makes them sound as more of vanity publisher(a term that is obviously looked down upon in the industry). My main plan of methodology was to complete a Content Analysis of four popular digital self publishing company websites by focusing on different aspects including their selling 'Motto' or website branding slogan, Marketing Plan, How much they offer authors in Royalties, etc and then make inferences about whether or not this makes them Vanity, Subsidy, or true Self Publishers. My question for everyone is: Does Content Analysis make sense in this context? Over the past month, i have read at least 15 research books and I keep coming back to this concept for my project, although I don't understand the framework of what the Content Analysis works in. Does analyzing websites mean that I'm doing Textual Analysis or something else? Most of my data will be qualitative, only dealing with numbers periodically from the information in the literature review. Does this mean I am using induction or deduction?? I have most of the data collected and am actually prepared to write, but I keep stumbling over A. What my methodology "type" is and B. If it's actually correct or if I should choose a different methodology outside of Content Analysis. Does anyone have any insight or recommendations? Unfortunately, my thesis advisor is completely rubbish and has been absolutely useless throughout this ENTIRE process. If I email him, he emails back saying things like "Good Job, Keep it Up, Etc. Nothing of substance, so basically I'm working with no support from my department. I know I'm on the right track, I just need a little more guidance on this. Thanks for your help!!!!Oh, I should also note that I was unable to find much formal research on my topic. No dissertations, No Term papers either. Most of my lit review is made up of newspaper articles and industry opinion pieces. more

Voting Question: Feedback on my essay !!! Much Appreciated.?

As human society continues to ascend further into the information age, there can be no more accurate statement than the popular maxim ‘knowledge is power’. In twenty-first century society, necessary and sought after information is often, if not always, available at the touch of a button. Civilization has shifted from times where knowledge, information, and communication with the external world had to be fully pursued and looked for in what the average modern man would consider unconventional and time consuming procedures and methods. Due to the fact that information was not easily obtainable, knowledge and general information was usually held by the ruling class and those people who were categorized as having higher socio-economic standing. The modern era however has been characterized by a massive explosion of easily accessible information and data in convenient places and institutions such as libraries, educational institutions, and eventually to the common home via electronically transmitted and networked data. This shift from institutionalized to household access has further evolved to hand held, portable mobile access for the average person. One of these common devices is none other than the Blackberry smart phone. The blackberry is a modern day mobile telephone intertwined with all the features of a house hold computer. The functions of a Blackberry smart phone range from voice communication, electronic mail, word processing and popular document viewing, to global positioning system and even geographical data provider. Furthermore, it also includes instant messaging, multimedia playback, and photographic functionality. It is a rather small, light weight apparatus which fits comfortably into any jacket or pocket for maximum portability. Due to its multifunctional capabilities, the Blackberry smart phone has now become a social norm, a cultural object, and one of the most desired material and technological objects of our time. Just by taking a cursory glance at the Blackberry’s official slogan “Connect to everything you love in life,” it is easy to see how it appeals to almost anybody by implying that an individual will be able to obtain information on anything of importance or interest to them. The Blackberry smart phone is sold through almost every major telecommunication company in Canada, and around the globe. Over the past few years, many of these companies have made this once extremely expensive commodity a now relatively financeable product. There are a vast amount of different types of people and corporations that benefit from the Blackberry smart phone. Of course there is the obvious set of people who profit from the technological advances of the Blackberry smart phone such as the company itself, the consumer, and the major network provider that sells this product. In addition, there is a rather significant external group who benefits from these phones such as marketing firms, and associative corporations. It is also worth mentioning the increase or boost in e-commerce that the Blackberry provides whether it is personal, or business related. As the Blackberry smart phone becomes a social norm and standard in our society and the telecommunication market, anything below or inferior to the Blackberry’s capabilities and services is considered sub-par and incompetent. Therefore, those lacking a Blackberry are considered to be at a disadvantage both functionally and socially as it solidifies its position as a culture icon and trend. A key aspect of understanding the Blackberry’s design can be best described through the notion of simplicity. Marketers strive to make the Blackberry, such a technologically advanced and highly intricate piece of machinery, as simplistic as possible so that it will appeal to a larger target audience. In this way, the Blackberry is not only limited or restricted to members of society which can be classified or labelled as being “technologically savvy.” Several main design features for maintaining simplicity and ease of use can be found in the form of scroll wheels, touch screens, and context menus for already divided and stratified aspects of the menu. The Blackberry has affected me personally by instilling a feeling of inadequacy as compared to my peers and the general populace who continues to indulge and consume more and more into the smart phone market. As a student, I am personally unable to have the funds for a Blackberry data plan which allows me to access and utilize it to its full capabilities and potential beyond simple voice communication which any other less expensive cellular device can provide. Within the general context of modern social life, the Blackberry simply and effectively allows for much deeper and intricate levels of networking and communication amongst the general populace. Communicational time barriers are virtually removed as the Blackberry allows for more real-time communication and data exchang more

Resolved Question: What do you believe the ideology of the 1980's was?

Here is what my instructor said about the 1980's I am writing a paper and need a little more insight about the ideology, (I did grow up in the 80s but I was in a small town not exposed to any of the mentality that my proffessor has stated.) "To fully understand American Psycho, one has to appreciate the social, political and economic climate in which the events of the story unfold. The setting is the 1980s – a decade marked by social conservatism that was perhaps best typified by the anti-drug slogan “Just Say No!” Politicians preached marriage and traditional family values, not to mention the purchasing value of a dollar. In fact, the mighty dollar and the competitive business practices of Wall Street were widely celebrated. “Greed is good!” became a popular saying even if junk bonds, insider trading and other Wall Street crimes left people penniless. Designer labels became popular. Wearing the right brands and owning the best products were keys to conformity and “fitting in.” Amidst all of this, Patrick Bateman struggles to survive." more

Resolved Question: If the Democrats agree to enact some free-market reforms, it might be worth supporting a modest expansion of S

If the Democrats agree to enact some free-market reforms, it might be worth supporting a modest expansion of S-CHIP. Otherwise, President Bush should make good on his veto threat. Ten years ago, Congress enacted the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or S-CHIP, to cover kids whose parents were doing too well to qualify for Medicaid assistance but not well enough to buy their own insurance. Now the program is up for re-authorization, and congressional Democrats want to expand it as a down payment on national health care. The program has already expanded beyond its original mission. New York is planning to cover families that make four times the federal poverty line. Almost 700,000 adults get their coverage through the program. The design of the program abets its growth: When states expand benefits, the federal government picks up most of the tab. The program’s expansion has come at the expense of private health-care coverage. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Democrats’ proposal would get insurance to 2.3 million additional children but simply replace private insurance for another 1.7 million. (It does not report on how many adults would also lose their private coverage.) Liberals are untroubled by this prospect. The replacement effect “hardly matters as long as the net effect is an expansion of insurance,” says The New Republic. But it means that taxpayers are not getting much bang for their bucks. S-CHIP also creates a trap for low-wage workers. Michael Cannon of the Cato Institute notes that, in combination with other welfare programs, S-CHIP levies a very high effective marginal tax rate on many such workers. If they work hard to make more money, that is, the resulting loss of benefits can put them behind where they started. Senate Democrats would finance the S-CHIP expansion by hiking cigarette taxes. These taxes fall most heavily on the poor; they cannot be hiked much further without stimulating black-market activity; and they will not raise the target amount of money unless a lot more people take up the newly expensive habit. (House Democrats would raise additional money by also kneecapping the private-sector component of Medicare.) A lot of children are going without health insurance for the same reasons that a lot of adults are: Government policies have made health markets dysfunctional. Instead of giving up on those markets and having the federal government pick up the tab, we should fix those policies. We could start by taking two steps the Bush administration advocates. The first is to reform the tax code so that individuals who buy health insurance for themselves can get the same tax break that employer-provided health insurance gets. The second is to allow individuals to cross state lines, and thus jump over their own states’ onerous mandates, to buy insurance. Cannon, the Cato Institute health-care expert, makes a strong case for a third step: treating S-CHIP and Medicaid the way we treat welfare. In 1996, we reformed welfare by block-granting it to the states. Similarly, Congress should give a set amount of money to the states to cover needy families. It should not reward the states for being more generous. The Democrats are in no mood to do any of these things. “Health insurance for kids” is a popular slogan, of course, and much of the business community is with the Democrats. Health-care providers are happy to get new subsidies, and some of them are afraid that Congress will ding them if they don’t get on board. If the Democrats agree to enact some free-market reforms, it might be worth supporting a modest expansion of S-CHIP. Otherwise, President Bush should make good on his veto threat. more

One American was also wounded. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Rahmat Gul/Associated Press Afghans shouted anti-American slogans Sunday to protest the deaths of civilians. The Reach of War Go to Complete Coverage » Enlarge This Image Noorullah/European Pressphoto Agency A suicide car bombing was part of the violence, the United States military said. The shooting set off demonstrations, with local people blocking the highway, the main road east from the town of Jalalabad to the border with Pakistan. And there were differences in some of the accounts of the incident, with the Americans saying that the civilians were caught in crossfire between the troops and militants, and Afghan witnesses and some authorities blaming the Americans for indiscriminately shooting at civilian vehicles in anger after the explosion. The United States military said the unit came under fire after a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden car near their convoy “as part of a complex ambush involving enemy small-arms fire from several directions.” The marines, who were on patrol near Jalalabad airfield, returned fire, and the civilians were killed and wounded in the crossfire during the battle, according to a statement from the military press office at Bagram airbase near Kabul. “We regret the death of innocent Afghan citizens as a result of the Taliban extremists’ cowardly act,” Lt. Col. David Accetta, a military spokesman, said in the statement. “Once again, the terrorists demonstrated their blatant disregard for human life by attacking coalition forces in a populated area, knowing full well that innocent Afghans would be killed and wounded in the attack.” Yet some of the wounded interviewed in the hospital by news agencies said the only shooting came from the American troops. A hospital official, who asked not to be named, said all the wounded were suffering from bullet wounds and not shrapnel from the bomb explosion. Hundreds of Afghans blocked the road and threw rocks at police officers in protest afterward, with some demonstrators shouting “Death to America! Death to Karzai,” a reference to President Hamid Karzai, The Associated Press reported. The shooting is a setback for American forces in Afghanistan, who have been working to contain the continuing insurgent attacks, in particular roadside bombs and suicide attacks, and win the support of the people with reconstruction and development projects. Deadly riots shook Kabul last May after American troops were involved in a fatal car crash and then opened fire on the crowd. Among the dead this morning were a woman and two children in their early teens, said Dr. Ajmal Pardez, the provincial director of health, speaking by telephone from the Jalalabad city hospital. He said the hospital received 10 dead and 25 wounded people from the incident, with four people in critical condition, he said. After the suicide attack, the American soldiers treated every car and person along the highway as a potential attacker, though none of the people showed hostile intent, Muhammad Khan Katawazi, the district chief of Shinwar, told The Associated Press. “They were firing everywhere, and they even opened fire on 14 to 15 vehicles passing on the highway,” said Tur Gul, 38, who was standing on the roadside by a gas station and was shot twice in his right hand. “They opened fire on everybody, the ones inside the vehicles and the ones on foot.” Some of the wounded interviewed by The Associated Press said the soldiers opened fire indiscriminately on passing cars and pedestrians on the busy main road. “When we parked our vehicle, when they passed us, they opened fire on our vehicle,” said 15-year-old Mohammad Ishaq, who was hit by two bullets, in his left arm and his right ear. “It was a convoy of three American Humvees. All three Humvees were firing around.” In other fighting, two British soldiers were killed on Saturday in southern Afghanistan, the British Defense Ministry said today. The men were involved in heavy fighting that has raged for three days in the town of Sangin, said Col. Tom Collins, a NATO spokesman in Kabul. Townspeople have fled the town and abandoned their shops as Taliban insurgents and British troops stationed there have been trading artillery and rockets, according to a resident of the area. more

Resolved Question: I want to open a business, but wanted to know what other people thought?

me and my associate were thinking about opening a coffee shop across from the local college, and were wondering if our ideas would be appealing to late high school, and college kids. To start off, it would be called "Caution Coffee" and the slogan would be "This Sh!t is hot. You've been warned." It would be a internet cafe, but the computers would also employ popular gaming titles such as WoW. The coffee selection would be range from standard dark to espresso, to coffee energy drinks, to hangover remedies. instead of "Starbucks selection" or whatever, the "music" would be comedians like mitch hedberg, and sorts, plus live local comedians whenever possible. We figured the walls could be decorated by marker or paint, by the people who came in. Featuring a 18+ profanity wall, and different other themed walls. We thought of offering a "mighty joe" challenge, were a someone would attempt to drink 15-20 double espresso's and sit through an episode of Martha Stewart, without moving. Gd, bd? more
