I'm by no means a fan of the idea that corporations are people, but when we fret that they can now spend as much money during campaigns as they want aren't we really saying that people are stupid? Would campaign finance matter at all unless the average person could be convinced of anything with enough advertising. Two examples: In the 2000 Republican primary Bush ran an ad against McCain that implied he was for breast cancer because he voted against an omnibus bill with some funding for breast cancer research. The (in)famous "I voted for it before I voted against it" ad against Kerry. Anyone who actually knows how the legislative process works knows that that is a frequent occurrence. Legislators vote for something in committee and then vote against it after all the mark ups, the amendments, and the riders make it a completely different bill. more

Ok, so I have to write a paper on the topics I want to give speeches on for my communications class. Two of my speeches have to be informative, one has to persuasive, and the last one has to be a commemorative speech. Resolved Question: A painting ruined my life, what should I do?

My grandfather was a painter, a famous and prodigious one. Many say that he was controversial as well. I would not have cared but for his choice of the subjects for his paintings. When I was a sweet, innocent boy of five, he dressed me (or was it my mother? I really do not know) into a velvet suit with frills, gave me a bowl, full of soapy water and made me blowing bubbles. I liked it a lot, at that time. My perfidious grandfather than proceeded paining me. So, I was captured this way, a little boy with golden curls, staring at a big bubble. Then my grandfather, who was not some nincompoop of painter, but a businessman, sold the painting for use to Pears soaps. It has been on all their advertising campaigns since then. Even worse, originally he called this painting "A Child's World", but later on he changed the name to "Bubbles". When I grew up, I joined the Navy, and rose to the rank of an Admiral. Yet no one calls me by my name. I am widely known as "Bubbles"! How can an Admiral gain respect with the nickname like this! It is ridiculous and demeaning. But if I show people that I mind, they will tease me even more. What should I do? more

I want to propose to my GF... but do I need a DIAMOND ring? why can;t it be just gold? It's not the money, it's just the message it sends. I wan't her to like me for me, not because I can buy her jewelry. A marriage should be based on trust and love, not on stuff i buy her. The ring symbolizes a lot of things, but marriage symbolizes everything between 2 people and I just don't think a diamond is necessary. Besides, diamond rings for engagements only started maybe 50 years ago by the diamond company Debeers.
