Resolved Question: How long/is it possible to make a website like this?

I have been offered to make a website advertising a therapist. I don't know the first thing about web design, but I am told that if you get a book, it will walk you through every step you need. Will I be able to do it? And also how long do you think it will take to make this website? It doesn't have to be top notch, just nice, presentable, creative, and colorful. more

Voting Question: I want to change the name of my band night (Indie Music)?

I currently run a successful band night every Thursday at a local bar where we showcase unsigned Indie Bands and solo artists from the UK. The night is currently known on posters as Indie Night Unsigned. The name came about as we used to advertise it on the chalk boards as follows and decided to adapt it to make a logo: Indie Night Unsigned Bands Every Thursday (Name of that weeks band) I want to change the name to something a bit more creative as I am looking to move the night into Manchester City Centre. A few names of existing nights that I like are 'Scruff of the neck' and 'The Aftershow' ... I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, Cheers more

Resolved Question: Creative ways to make money?

I don't have a job and to be honest, I've given up looking for one. I've found out that jobs around here are so competitive now: one ordinary run of the mill job was up advertised for 8 hours and over 800 appilcants applied ! Thats after 8 hours. So.... Anyway how I can make money on my own? I don't think I'm cut out for a full business (I'm a writer in my free time) and I am working on getting things published, but meanwhile; how can I make some money? I'm a pretty good cook but I'm not good with numbers/organisation/finances. Any suggestions would be great. Cheers folks more

Resolved Question: Whats the best University to study Advertising Design/Graphics etc (in the UK)?

I'm wanting to go to university applying next year. However I'm unsure about what university I want to study at. Ive done quite a lot of extensive research, i.e. going on UCAS, looking at different courses. But I'm still unsure, I want to keep my options open, but also want to specialize in a subject. So as to not limit the jobs I can go for. I specifically want to study: Advertising, in a design/creative context, and additionally Graphics Design and/or Photography. Wheres the best place to study and on what course? I have looked into the option of doing a combined/joint Hons Degree but I'm still not certain.....additionally i would want a course that provides some work experience in industry...Any suggestions?? more

Resolved Question: What can I pair Philosophy with for a double degree?

I'm a high school student looking forward to become a writer or work in the field of journalism, but still accept other possibilities too. I've made up my mind on philosophy and want to take a double-degree program. If I take creative writing, will it help me on journalism career? Or are there any other options? I don't want to take law, business, or economy, but I heard philosophy is also good in advertising. What should I take for a job in advertising? Thanks before. more

Resolved Question: Does sending out a CV cold to companys who are not advertising for vacancies really work?

Hi I'm desperately trying to get into a career in sign making. I am artistic and creative and feel I could really be a benefit in this role. My question is, is it worth me sending out a covering letter and a cv (cold calling) to sign making companies that are not advertising for vacancies? Has anyone tried doing this or something similar and had success? What is the best procedure for doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Jonathan more

Resolved Question: Personal Statement Help Please !! thanks :)?

Below i have my uni personal statement.. if any one could help proof read it for me and make any suggestions i would be most grateful thanks... Why do I want to go on to higher education? Well, ever since I started secondary school at the age of eleven I have always wanted to pursue towards further education at university. Originally I wanted to become a Primary school teacher but since taking part in a lot of work experience in that field, my mind was suddenly made up that that this in fact was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I since have gained a great interest in the marketing industry, and I have come to notice that there are mass opportunities in the market, which has yet to be exploited, and I in the future want to do exactly that. I believe it would challenge my more creative side as well as testing my theoretical skills. I'm particularly interested in the more creative advertising side of marketing and the psychology behind it. I'm very business minded and I have many ideas, which I can expand on in the future. But before I do so I want to be more knowledgeable about the marketing industry, because if I do go into this field of work then I want to know what type of characteristics I need to build on in order to be successful in whatever I do in the future. My auntie is also part owner of a family business, so I have experienced business throughout my life and I believe this has contributed to my passion towards this subject. I have just recently undergone two weeks work experience at my aunties business. Here I helped to create leaflets and posters in order to reach out to the local and wider community. I found this thoroughly interesting and I now want to gain a much deeper insight into the marketing sector in order to pursue a career in the industry in the future. In October I returned from a 2 ½ month voluntary project in Kenya run by a government scheme called platform2. The aim of the trip is to provide 18-25 year olds the opportunity to visit a developing country and get involved with global issues of justice and poverty. Whilst in Kenya I lived with a local family for the ten week duration and worked on an ongoing conservation project in order to help conserve the eco system by improving the livelihoods or communities adjacent to the forest through an environmentally sustainable income. This experience has undoubtedly broadened my perspective of the world. It has been portrayed to me that out in Kenya everyone was trying to help one another get by, they were all in the same boat. Here, most people are trying to just get in their own boat and sail their own course. Over there they know that if they don’t build a boat together, they sink. Volunteering in Kenya in an underprivileged community has undoubtedly developed my life skills and fostered the creativity within me. It has nurtured my ability to be flexible in changing conditions, and adapt and adjust to new environments and cultures. Platform2- ‘Some People wait for change to happen, other people volunteer’ All my experiences have made me keen to broaden my knowledge and given the chance I will do so with full dedication, determination and continuous persistence as I am a motivated, sophisticated and charismatic individual who believes you only get one chance to make a first impression and my recognition would be by accomplishing my objective which is to obtain a degree in the marketing field and make myself realise that I have worked towards my potential which thus will be the basis of my success in the future. more

Resolved Question: What are some good career ideas that I may have overlooked?

I am a senior in high school and somewhat lost when it comes to my possible future career. I am extremely creative but also enjoy sciences such as biology. I applied to all of my schools claiming a biology major but would not mind switching to a business or advertising major. I always thought id be a pediatrician or and optometrist but now I would like to explore a more creative career. Could someone explain what a career in advertising entails or what does it mean to be a creative director of a magazine? or any careers that pop into your mind let me know thanks! more

Resolved Question: Need a good introduction to my children's advertising presentation?

I am giving a presentation on the impact of advertising on children, at Uni, and me and my group need something that will shock the audience and introduce our topic at the same time. Resolved Question: How to find a job in a tough market through applied practical fashion?

I clipped the items below today from one of my favorite websites, ‘Aol find a job / Career Builder’ http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2009/10/16/what-not-to-wear-to-a-job-interview/?icid=main|htmlws-main-n|dl4|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fjobs.aol.com%2Farticles%2F2009%2F10%2F16%2Fwhat-not-to-wear-to-a-job-interview%2F The following is a list of fashion choices the article recommends all job seekers ought avoid when interviewing for a job: 1. Sunglasses on top of your head or headphones around your neck Be sure to remove all your "transit gear" and tuck it in your briefcase before entering the lobby. 2. Carrying a backpack or fannypack instead of a briefcase or portfolio Some image consultants suggest women ditch their purse, too! 3. Too-short skirts Your skirt should cover your thighs when you are seated. 4. The wrong tie Ties should be made of silk, no less than 3 ¾ inches wide with a conservative pattern. Image consultants say the best colors are red or burgundy. 5. Overly bright or large-patterned clothing With the possible exception of creative fields like advertising or computer programming, it's best to stick with navy, black or gray. 6. Heavy makeup on women (or any makeup on a man) 7. Earrings on men In fact, men should avoid wearing any jewelry unless it is a wedding ring, class ring or metal watch. 8. More than one set of earrings on women 9. Facial piercings, tongue jewelry or visible tattoos 10. Ill-fitting clothes Few people can wear things straight off the rack. Spending a little extra to have your garments tailored is a worthwhile investment. 11. Long fingernails, especially with bright or specialty polishes Nails should look clean and be trimmed to a length that doesn't leave an observer wondering how you keep from stabbing yourself. 12. Unnatural hair colors or styles Remember, Donald Trump was a billionaire well before he began wearing a comb-over. If you're balding, try a close-cropped cut like Bruce Willis or Matt Lauer. 13. Short-sleeved shirts Even worse when worn with a tie 14. Fishnets, patterned hosiery or bare legs (no matter how tan you are) Women should stick with neutral color hosiery that complements their suit. 15. Men whose socks don't match their shoes Or whose socks are too short and leave a gap of flesh when they are seated 16. Rumpled or stained clothing If interviewing late in the day, try to change to a fresh suit beforehand. 17. Scuffed or inappropriate footwear Including sneakers, stilettos, open-toed shoes and sandals 18. Strong aftershaves, perfumes or colognes Many people are allergic to certain scents. For a subtle fragrance, use a good quality bath soap. 19. Belts and shoes that don't match Shoes and belts should be made of leather or leather-like materials and the best colors for men are black or cordovan. 20. Telltale signs that you're wearing a new suit Remove all tags and extra buttons -- and remember to cut off the zigzag thread that keeps pockets and slits closed! I personally think that list is far too long and complicated, and consequently, I have composed what I think is a more concise and easier to remember list: 1. When interviewing for a job, always wear a costume that disguises your actual identity then role play a fictional character in order to deceive your prospective employer because that is the only way an unworthy and deficient piece of crap like you will ever get a job. There, how is that? That’s a lot easier to remember, don't you think? Do you have any other good ideas for the job interview fashion recommendation list?BA COMMENT (part 1): I’m disappointed by voter apathy and low turnout but the two answers posted are nonetheless good and thoughtful ones (although I suspect Doc stopped reading somewhere prior to my sarcastic conclusion). (I’m going to try condensing and revising this question then asking it again.) I obviously can never logically reconcile collectivism with individualism but I do in fact consider individuality a crucial element of collectivism. I (and in my estimation an overwhelming majority of collectivists) do not want us all in identical black jumpsuits chanting common phrases. To me, collectivism means unconditional universal inclusion and that means we never recommend disguises or advise each other on how best to conceal our principles and personal identities. I have spent most of my professional career under ‘business attire’ hair & dress codes, and no experience in my lifetime (including disputes with the IRS) has ever come anywhere near equaling the oppression I have feltfrom an employer empowered to dictate my physical appearance. What could ever be more personal, more intrusive and humiliating or a more absolute form of power than to directly control something so crucial as personal physical identity? Perhaps somewhat counter-intuitively, it is precisely the ideal of individualism that entitles my employer to exercise the individual liberty to oppress my individuality, while the unconditional universality of collectivism is the arguably superior safeguard. I do not ‘want’ to work for the man; economic & social conditions COMPEL me to work for the man, and long before any argument, challenge or dialogue ever occur, I cloak myself in a disguise, conceal my identity then deceive the prospective employer with fraudulent conformity (both physical and intellectual -- After successfully deceiving a prospective employer with my disguise, convinced of my conformity and uniformity, most of my employers, managers and coworkers then feel surprisinglycomfortable telling me how much they hate people like me… of course, totally unaware all the while that I am in fact a person like me). This is the story of my professional lifetime; for the majority of it, I portray a fictional character, I am a spy, an enemy infiltrator, a fugitive under an assumed identity. Surely, no one would ever dispute these are unhealthy relationships built on falsehoods and deception. I make a very sharp distinction between individualism and individuality, and I am quite confident based on our previous correspondence that you easily appreciate that distinction, and in addition I imagine you appreciate and respect individuality no less than me. So, once again, I find the fundamental disagreements between the reasonable rational collectivist and the reasonable rational individualist among the most trivial and negotiable of the components involved in the issue. Great response, and again as usual, sorry for the verbose reply. more

Resolved Question: Heeelp! What course do I choose?

Ok, Well, I’m an 18 year old student who is in trouble with choosing what subject to choose to carry on my further studies... Well at the moment I’m studying an National Diploma Media course at college.. (I LUV MEDIA) Ok so my problem is I’m stuck between 2 things I love that’s in Media. Number 1: Marketing and advertising Number 2: Film and Television production Ok well I love both of those. In my class everyone is telling me to do film and TV because I’m like awesome at it and I’m getting very good grades. The problem that I have with film and TV is that it’s a very competitive course and it’s a very big challenge to achieve it in the industry. BUT as I said I’m very passionate about it, and I love it. On the other hand there is marketing and advertising course that I like is well. Well I love the fact that one poster/add can change thousands of people’s minds. Also I know that in marketing I will have a future as it’s not as much as competitive as film and TV. BUT my problem with marketing and advertising is that it’s on the business side and there aren’t that much creative side (no producing) so I don’t like that... So what do I do?? Do I go for film and TV and risk all but follow my heart Or Do I go for marketing and Advertising that has no creativity but has a good future? ? ? Help more

Voting Question: How important, if at all, is it to study a modern foreign language at A level?

I'm in year 11 (5th form) and we've just started to choose our A level options. The thing is, I'm really not sure where I'll be in, say 5 years time university wise or even 10 years time career wise. I've always had an interest in art since I was very small but I'm thinking as nice as it would be, taking a career path in art isn't going to perhaps be the most sensible decision. I'd rather have a job which I can rely on rather than be freelance, if you get what I mean. I've kinda been interested in CGI and computer graphics for a little bit now although it's not exactly a burning passion of mine, I think just more of a hobby. I've also really taken a liking to Chinese culture and language, ever since I first went to Hong Kong two years ago. Something about it has just kinda stuck with me and I have a very personal and compassionate connection with it for various reasons (from my Dad working there to family moving out there 15 years ago). I think more than anything, working in Asia is absolutely the path I want to follow, but I'm seriously not sure what job I want :/ I want something fairly challenging, something that involves traveling would also be a dream requirement for me but not a "nine to five" office job as such. Ideally something business/creative related, possibly advertising but I'm not sure if I'd find this mundane or not enough of a challenge. So my real question is, what options should I take? For my GCSE options (apart from the core subjects) I picked: *Art *ICT *Spanish *Classical Civilisation I've been predicted As and A*s in all of them so I could do any of them I like for A Level if I perform in the exams ^.^ So I was wondering what I should do for A Level? I've been trying to cover all potential "study" situations, if you like, because I'm really not sure what I'd like to study at uni, although I'd love to perhaps to do a degree in Chinese history/culture/language. So what A Levels? I was going to do: *Art *Spanish *Computing *Biology But now I'm thinking of doing the following: *Art *Biology *Politics *Economics Do you think these options are too varied? Will I really regret not taking Spanish? Although I will be taking two Italian classes a week (this won't amount to a formal qualification though but at least I'd be learning a Modern language still) Because I'm only 16 but I can speak English (obvs lol) Spanish, French, and a bit of Mandarin, Japanese and Cantonese. So do you think a course in beginners Chinese language/studies would take me on even though I've done no formal qualification for A Level? I just don't want to risk narrowing my choices even though I'm not sure if I'm willing to take a subject that's not necessarily one of my favourites :/ Will not having a higher qualification in a European language set me back in years to come? Even though my ultimate goal is to study Chinese language, not Spanish? :/ more

Resolved Question: I am a total and utter Aquarius, but I struggle with constantly changing all the time and being realistic.?

I'm not realistic about money, I basically am not in alot of debt, but the little I am in, I never seem to get out of. I'm very creative and active, but never stick with things long enough to become successful. I'm ultra ambitious, but a channel I spoke to recently suggested I need to be more realistic about things and develop frameworks to ensure I follow things through etc. I suppose the question is, how can I become more realistic, I meditate, I do yoga, I've resolved huge emotional stuff for myself over the past 8 years and I'm so much more grounded now than I ever before have been, I'm getting alot better at managing my money and yet, prompted by what this lovely channel said, I feel a little UGH! She said, it's time for me to plan for the next part of my life, the adult part and actually work on creating some physical security for myself. The thing is, as usual, none of this was new to me, but I felt like I was doing pretty good, I've just started working for myself, in the personal development field, which I know is my purpose and I'm gifted at working with people and reading them etc. so that's great. I suppose, this woman highlighted alot of things about me which brought up more questions that I suppose I wanted to face. The changes I've made in the past few months, felt right, they felt good, moving country to be with my boyfriend, setting up my business here, investing money in advertising etc. etc. and now I'm in a heap thinking why did it feel so right and now I can see, that it was probably very powerful wishful thinking. more

Resolved Question: Completely confused in career direction. Has anybody ever felt lost and re-found themselves?

I started working for a post production television company 1.5 years ago in London, in that time I have been promoted from runner, to head runner, to reception and now I do a bit of press and marketing for the company – the job is DULL, its very admin based and I practically sit on facebook all day. I am so bored but at the same time feel a bit trapped by the security of having a job that pays the wage, but the problem is, I don’t feel as though I am fulfilling my potential. I have always wanted to work on camera, in action and am a very creative person but since I started working in the industry the competetiveness and the horrible people have really knocked me which has made me question whether I want to spend the rest of my career working in an industry that is so backstabbing and unreliable. I used to be interested in advertising but to be honest – I don’t think I can handle the rat race, there must be more to life surely? I have been accepted onto a course in Journalism and Economics starting September but I’ve become so demotivated by my job that I don’t know if I even want to do that anymore, apparently journalism is just as bad. I’m not sure if I’m just using it as an escape route out of being trapped. I am 22 now and worrying that I am wasting time when I could be working towards success, I’m really not sure what to do. Any advice? more

Resolved Question: Would you visit this hotel? And if you would...please tell me why?

Melbourne, June 25 (ANI): Owing to a rather 'ironical' ad campaign, an Amsterdam hotel, which claimed to be 'the worst hotel in the world', has become a huge hit with travellers in the city. The campaign, by advertising agency KesselsKramer, paints the Hans Brinker budget hotel in Amsterdam as dirty, uncomfortable and lacking basic necessities such as beds. Although the advertisers promoted the hotel in dog poo, the 650-bed hotel is attracting customers in large numbers and runs at around 80 per cent occupancy even in the low season. The hotel's success is fully attributed the advertising campaign, which "takes honesty to the extreme" and are "revered and reviled in equal measure", said the company's website. The ads promote the hotel as "similar to hell, but without proper heating". Dave Bell, Creative Director and Partner at KesselsKramer, said that the hotel has found a unique selling-point. "Everybody is always trying to be the best, but there are merits in being the worst. May be more people should strive to be the worst at something, when you're the worst you have a lot more room to be creative and do your own thing," News.com.au quoted Bell as saying. In a YouTube video, the hotel promotes itself as "accidentally eco-friendly"- having a lack of services such as cleaning and elevators that are out of order means it uses less energy. "The Hans Brinker budget hotel has been helping the planet, unintentionally, since 1970," said one advertisement. "Here is a hotel where the light bulbs don't work. A hotel whose showers have less hot water than is standard. Where elevators stay out of order for days. And whose vacuum cleaners' buttons are rarely switched on," the hotel said in the YouTube video. "To lessen our impact on the environment staff do as little as possible for guests. An eco-elevator ensures that the only energy spent going to the room is your own," said a poster. "Leave the towel on the rack. We won't wash it. Leave the towel on the floor. We still won't wash it," said another poster. more

Resolved Question: Please, Could anyone check my motivational letter? I'm not English.?

I would like to apply for a 14 weeks training in the Leonardo da Vinci project. Currently, I am studying “Advertising Technique” in my first year at the University of Palermo. Advertising is an important interest field and it’s necessary for all work sectors. This studies optimize my abilities and I can develop my creative potential. During my studies, I have found that my interests are focused particularly in the area of Marketing, with emphasis on marketing strategies and public relations. In December, I completed a vocational training school that established a connection between my interests and a new theme for me: the ambient. It make me aware of sustainable tourism, sustainable development and environmental protection. Thanks to the Leonardo da Vinci project, I hope I can gain a work experience in this field so as to broaden my horizons while enhancing my career profile. Completing a training would give me an excellent opportunity to explore different working methods and practise the knowledge I gained at university and during all my studies. Through my previous training experience, I have gained good communication skills and was able to adapt quickly to new surroundings and situations. I have learnt to work towards and achieve my aims with great commitment and perseverance. This new experience would be great and I am positive about my advantages: to develop and the professional and the personal identity, improve my English and finally the most exciting thing: to be a responsible citizen actively interested in a new country’s welfare and culture. Yours sincerely. Thanks, thanks, thanks! more

Resolved Question: Music Management/Production in UK?

How would I go about getting into the music management industry in UK? I'm in year 11 now, i'm taking media, art, RE, history, maths, fast track English and seperate sciences for GCSE. I'm staying on for 6th form and i'm dropping maths and all the sciences, and i'm hoping to take art, media, psychology and English laguage. When i leave school, i want to get into the music industry, either on the management side or the production. I would prefer management as i'm not great with learning technical stuff like new equipment. Preferably, the more creative side, such as advertising or something. What sort of path should i look at taking? What courses are there in Uni's that i'll need to take and where do i go from there. Basically, please tell me as much as you can about getting into the music management industry! Thanks, P. Also, is it advisable that i move away, as there's not much in that field of work in the UK as far as i'm aware. more

Resolved Question: Would anyone know of a ?

Resolved Question: Predicted an A for English but don't get it?

I'm predicted an A for English and I'm working to that standard in every area of it apart from Media. We are currently studying advertising and are meant to come up with some creative healthy eating thing for children only thing is its not my best topic in English but I don't want to fall down in grade. It has to be fun and it has to have a slogan and a name. Got any ideas? :/I didn't , it was suggested so I just left it.Well Yeah a D seems pretty reasonable in Media , well thanks for that I'm sure I will try harder ;) more

Resolved Question: What to do in university?

i am currently retaking 1st yr of college/6thform-yr 12. i have always not known what i want to be or what to do in the future. i did ok in my GCSEs where i took: Art-A Textiles-A Mathematics-A Double Science-DD Religious Studies-B Geography-C English Literature-B English Language-C Chinese-A* French-B Statistics-C and as for A-levels last year, i wasn't sure which ones to do as i didn't really enjoy any of the subjects, the only ones i liked was art n textiles n okay...with maths, but as for the others...either i hated them or realy did not get them~science for example. Also, on top of that, i'm a BBC[British Born Chinese], and my parents are the typical type of chinese people,"go be a doctor! go be an accountant! go be a lawyer!!...."i hate scienece, my english is crap! n my maths isn't great. i wanted to do Art/Textiles but it was a clash with Maths in the timetable at the time so i had to forget about them. In the end, i chose Maths, Further Maths, Economics, Geography and Applied Business Studies. i didn't enjoy economics during the 1st 2 months because of all the theories and things, it was too technical for me, but it was too late to drop so i had to stick with it for the year. geography was...ok i would say in GCSE but it was just an extra thing. n with applied business, was also an extra thing as there were 4 blocks which i had to choose. as with further maths, i wasn't going to do it until i asked my teacher on the 1st day of school whether she thought i was capable of doing it, and she just pushed me into the room where she told the people to do further maths to go there. so i ended up doing those 5subjects. in the end i didnt do well.. Applied Business Studies-C Maths[further maths included]-D Economics-U Geography-U so here i am now, in year 12 again doing Maths, Applied Business Studies and Art. i'm doing Applied Business Studies A2 level as there was a clash with maths. and i chose art as i realised i should do something which i enjoy. i only chose 3 subs as i learnt from last time that i am not superwoman n as clever as other people. i was planning to do Management and Korean BA combined degree, but i really don't know whether i will enjoy it or not-whether it is suitable for me. i reaaalllllyy do not want to waste anymore time and pick the wrong thing again. ToT i don't want to do art in uni cos i don't like art as much so that i want to carry it on further in uni, i can see myself working in an office/primary school teacher/air hostess...or if possible in an advertising company where everything is rushy and creative at the same time-but i don't have a lot of contacts...i'm quite shy at times but am willing to help people if can... any suggestions? i know this is reeeaaallllyyy long! i already tried to make this as short as possible! *bows* more

Resolved Question: I want to become an advertising creative... but?

but I have been offered a very good job (account) in a big agency. Seeing as it is not easy to work in advertising... Should I accept the job offer and just try to get into the industry later or should I say "no, thanks" and get experience as a graphic designer in a small studio? I am 27. The question might sound funny but, being Spanish, I do not know the UK industry enough to understand what is the sensible thing to do. Any answer will be really appreciated. Thanks. more
