TO FORGET WOULD BE TO FORGIVE................................. Srinagar, January 4, 1990. Aftab, a local Urdu newspaper, publishes a Press release issued by Hizb-ul Mujahideen, set up by the Jamaat-e-Islami in 1989 to wage jihad for Jammu & Kashmir’s secession from India and accession to Pakistan, asking all Hindus to pack up and leave. Another local paper, Al Safa, repeats this expulsion order. In the following days, there is near chaos in the Kashmir Valley with Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and his National Conference Government abdicating all responsibilities. Masked men run amok, waving Kalashnikovs, shooting to kill and shouting anti-India slogans. Walls are plastered with posters and handbills, summarily ordering all Kashmiris to strictly follow the Islamic dress code, prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks and imposing a ban on video parlours and cinemas. The masked men with Kalashnikovs force people to re-set their watches and clocks to Pakistan Standard Time. Shops, business establishments and homes of Kashmiri Pandits, the original inhabitants of the Kashmir Valley with a recorded cultural and civilisational history dating back 5,000 years, are marked out. As evening falls, the exhortations become louder and shriller. Three taped slogans are repeatedly played the whole night from mosques: ‘Kashmir mei agar rehna hai, Allah-o-Akbar kehna hai’ (If you want to stay in Kashmir, you have to say Allah-o-Akbar); ‘Yahan kya chalega, Nizam-e-Mustafa’ (What do we want here? Rule of Sharia’h); ‘Asi gachchi Pakistan, Batao roas te Batanev san’ (We want Pakistan along with Hindu women but without their men). In the preceding months, 300 Hindu men and women, nearly all of them Kashmiri Pandits, had been slaughtered ever since the brutal murder of noted lawyer Pandit Tika Lal Taploo by the JKLF in Srinagar on September 14, 1989. Soon after that, Justice NK Ganju of the Srinagar High Court was shot dead. Pandit Sarwanand Premi, 80-year-old poet, and his son were kidnapped, tortured, their eyes gouged out, and hanged to death. A Kashmiri Pandit nurse working at the Soura Medical College Hospital in Srinagar was gang-raped and then beaten to death. Another woman was abducted, raped and sliced into pieces at a saw mill In villages and towns across the valley, terrorist hit lists have been floating about. All the names are of Pandits. With no Government worth its name, the administration having collapsed, the police nowhere to be seen, despondency sets in. As the night of January 19, 1990, wears itself out, despondency gives way to desperation. And tens of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits across the valley take a painful decision: To flee their homeland to save their lives. Thus takes place a 20th century Exodus. * * * http://kanchangupta.blogspot.com/2010/01…क्या हम कश्मीरी हिन्दुओं के नरसंहार को भूल गए हैं ?http://kanchangupta.blogspot.com/2010/01/to-forget-would-be-to-forgive.htmlhttp://kanchangupta.blogspot.com/2010/01/to-forget-would-be-to-forgive.html moreVoting Question: I need a good slogan quick! Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt recently wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The excerpt is in accordance with the magazine's policy. The 14 characteristics are: 1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. 4. Supremacy of the Military Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy. 6. Controlled Mass Media Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with National Security Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 9. Corporate Power is Protected The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed . 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. Well, i have an assignment to deconstruct an print ad, and i have all the details but it always sounds so stupid when i write it in paragraphs... feedback?? opinions?? help?? Target Audience The Forevermark advertisement adopts numerous ideologies in order to sell their products to their selected target audience. As this company more often than not targets women as their merchandise is deigned for females this advertisement is out to break the trend. This advertisement in particular the company takes a different approach by targeting males. Originally the producer of the However, the advertisement doesn’t just target any old man, but more specifically the advertisement targets wealthy males. Therefore the advertisement is specifically targeting upper class males with a high income. One of the ideologies adopted is the assumed that wealthy people are the only people in today’s society the have the opportunities to be happy and trouble free. This is due to the fact that all of the products from the Forevermark Company are expensive. However, the price assumption is a gap filled by the viewer right from the moment the audience see the diamond bracelet displayed at the top of the advertisement. Men who want to please their partner and bring romance back into their relationship would be attracted to this advertisement. Forevermark has adapted this advertisement so that it targets married males who may have any issues with their partner. In a way the advertisement relates back traditional family ideologies, as it assumed that the husband goes off to work, and therefore has the money to be able to spoil his partner. Therefore it’s also assumed that it’s the male’s responsibility to please the females and furthermore resolve any relationship issues. Invited Reading The Foverevermark advertisement targets men and has many different meanings behind it. The advertisement portrays many subconscious messages to the viewer without them even realising. Just by looking at the advert the obvious invited reading is “this product is produced to make your partner/ wife appreciate you again”. This is represented by the slogan saying "Hey, what do you know, she thinks your funny again". Thus implying that the solitary way to please her is to purchase their product. The producer of the advertisement is also trying to convey the message that their product is what every women wants and that this will make them happy no matter what the circumstances. To appeal to the viewer the advertisement relates back to idea wealthy people are the only people who have the opportunity to be happy and trouble free. Visual Techniques Appealing to men through an advertisement with lots of details is a difficult undertaking as most men would be more interested in something simple in comparison to females who would rather the opposite. In order to fulfil the objective of targeting these men the producer of the advertisement has used many visual techniques. The advertisement is set out as a single visual with a plain black background, with only a thing white border. Using the plain black and white background the producer was targeting the selected audience. All the text is set out in bold, centred, capitalised text. A single underline is also under the text. The single picture of the diamond bracelet at the top of the page isn’t directly appealing to the men but rather just displaying the product. The plain blacks and whites may appeal to some men as if they are business men as the colours used are set out to appear professional. At the bottom of the advertisement, just above the border, the company’s slogan and logo are displayed in slightly smaller text however still follows the trend of being white and bold. Language Techniques The language featuring in the Fovevermark advertisement is the substantial catch phrase which is found at in the centre. The catch phrases states Hey, what do you know, she thinks your funny again". The way this catch phrase intrigues the selected target audience is through humour. As the advertisement is targeted at men the humour used in the catch phrase is more appealing to men as they will be more likely to appreciate the joke and therefore become intrigued in the advertisement. Men over women are more likely to respond to a humorous advertisement and that is why the producer has made the main focus humorous. Wit humour therefore is the main language technique used. The only other language used is the company’s slogan which is displayed at the bottom of the advertisement with the logo. It states “A diamond is forever”. Subliminal messages are conveyed from this slogan. The slogan is basically conveying the message that if their product is bought then the couple’s relationship will last forever just as the diamond will. This created desire for the product. Gaps and Silences The two main silences in the advertisement are the women’s point of view and middle class people. This advertiseme moreVoting Question: Americans. Kay and Andrea F. Siegel Baltimore Sun reporters February 5, 2010 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials detained seven people from Honduras after a raid Thursday in Anne Arundel County, prompting a demonstration outside the Baltimore Federal Building. ICE spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs confirmed that an enforcement action took place and that seven Hondurans were in custody. She said that because the investigation is continuing, she could provide only limited information. Fobbs did not disclose the name of the business where the Hondurans were working or the location of the business. Protesters gathered outside the Federal Building in Baltimore late Thursday afternoon. About 15 people held signs and shouted slogans, including, "Reform not raids" and "Stop separating families." Leaders of Casa de Maryland, advocates for immigrants' rights, said they were told that seven males, one of them a juvenile, were taken into custody at a Hanover restaurant. Elizabeth Alex, Casa's lead organizer for the Baltimore region, said there haven't been many workplace raids under the Obama administration. Advocates had hoped that raids would stop until comprehensive immigration reform can be achieved. "We're unhappy we're seeing a return to Bush-era policy," Alex said. "We would hope immigration enforcement would be reserved for people who are criminals," she said later. The protesters hoped that the detainees would be released on their own recognizance or be permitted to meet with legal counsel within 24 hours. Alex said that people who have been detained after raids might be given contact information for lawyers but might not necessarily reach them before they are sent to detention centers in York, Pa., or on the Eastern Shore. "Due process is part of the foundation of this country," said Gustavo Andrade, senior organizing director of Casa de Maryland. Lawyers for Casa waited 90 minutes in the ICE offices before they were told that they would not be allowed to meet with the detainees, Alex said. moreResolved Question: Need CATCHY slogan for school...What's YOUR idea?
