moreResolved Question: Screweddddddddddddddddddddddddd?
You might be surprised to know that one of the world's dominant shoe, sports equipment and clothing brands was aptly named after the Greek goddess of victory -- and that the inspiration for the name struck during a dream.
It began in 1964 with a casual agreement and a handshake between University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, a middle-distance runner. The pair formed Blue Ribbon Sports and began importing Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger running shoes, known today as ASICs, for sale in the U.S.
In 1967, Knight and Bowerman made the handshake deal formal and incorporated as BRS Inc. Jeff Johnson signed on in 1965 as the company's first full-time salesperson and opened Blue Ribbon Sports' first retail outlet the following year. In 1971, Johnson made an incalculable contribution to the company: One night, he dreamed of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and suggested the name to his bosses. The company used the moniker for its first footwear product to feature the "Swoosh" mark -- a soccer cleat called the Nike, whose name beat out Knight's suggestion that they call it the Dimension 6.
The Swoosh trademark was created by a graphic-design student from Portland State University named Carolyn Davidson. She got $35 for her creation.
Expanding the Nike Brand
Looking to expand the line, Bowerman began experimenting with the concept of athletic shoes with rubber spikes. By pouring a liquid rubber compound into his wife's waffle iron, Bowerman created an innovative running-shoe sole. The company unveiled Nike "Moon Shoes" featuring the Waffle sole for athletes competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., in 1972. A succession of shoes, many based on the waffle outsole, followed. Some of the most famous are the Waffle Racer, Air Force One and Air Max 97.
When tees featuring a lower-case "nike" script logo designed by Davidson hit stores that year, folks unfamiliar with the name asked, "Who's Mike?" when they spotted the shirts.
Elite Sponsors: Athletes in Nike Shoes
A growing number of elite athletes competed in Nike footwear. Runner Mark Covert was the first athlete to wear Nike shoes across a finish line. Nike shoes got their first endorsement by a professional athlete when Romanian tennis personality Ilie Nastase signed on to wear Nikes on the court.
In 1977, former aerospace engineer Frank Rudy teamed with Nike to create the first Air-Sole units -- durable bags filled with pressurized gas that compressed under impact, then sprang back. The result was Nike Air cushioning, which hit stores in 1979.
In 1980, Nike went public.
The year 1984 saw the signing of basketball megastar Michael Jordan to an endorsement contract, followed by the 1985 release of his signature shoe, the Air Jordan. Originally, the NBA banned this new shoe because it didn't match the league's dress code, but the ban simply served to give the design a higher profile and extensive publicity.
Nike revenues topped $1 billion for the first time in 1986. The rest, as they say, is history.
Superstar Follow-Up
Nike followed up on its footwear fame by dressing athletes from head to toe, introducing apparel collections for tennis and basketball, which were popularized respectively by superstars John McEnroe and Michael Jordan. In 1988, Nike's "Just Do It" slogan was introduced, and it remains one of the most recognizable and successful commercial taglines. In 1990, the first NikeTown store opened in Portland, Ore. The company signed golfing phenom Tiger Woods in 1996.
In 1999, Bill Bowerman, Nike's co-founder, died at age 88. The company bought bankrupt rival Converse for $305 million in 2003. In 2004, Phil Knight stepped down as CEO and president of Nike, but he continues as chairman. Headquartered in Beaverton, Ore., Nike remains one of the largest and most successful companies operating today.
moreResolved Question: Politics: Fired Rehired 2 wks later - My Boss is arguing my employment contract stock options, Your thoughts?
I need an outside opinion on an employee contract with stock options.
I was hired in February of 2009. I have been working with this start-up company for nearly a year now. In October, i was "laid off" due to "budget cuts" (they were in the middle of expanding operations). In reality, i was fired because of office politics - I found out later that was the case because someone says i did something that i didn't which was not revealed as it wasn't discussed during my "exit interview" where they claimed they just couldn't afford to keep me on and intended to rehire me when the product was ready for sale. The product goes on sale in two months - i've been back without a contract since october of 09.
After talking with the CEO, he felt it wasn't right that i was let go and still had value in the company and brought me back to the company work directly for him two weeks later. My title changed from marketing director to business developer, and my new responsibility was to raise money.
While being employed there, the share price was already raised to .75 cents - i was still vesting under my original contract at .50 cents.
However, i was still being asked to do some work i was previously responsible for and even today i am still involved in aspects of marketing, research and development. They still come to me with questions as i've been there longer than any of my coworkers in the marketing department, including the new VP of marketing - so i was the go to guy for answers for months after.
My original employment agreement was that i was going to receive 250k options vesting over 3 years at .50 cents.
They think that my new employment contract should be 250k options at .75 cents over 3 years.
I personally feel that my stock options should not change from .50 cents to .75 cents whatsoever as i still fulfill some of the duties that i was previously responsible, and the work i did in that capacity will still benefit the company forever - this means marketing ideas, slogans, branding, product names, product development, features, benefits, contacts, partnerships - you name it, i had my hands in it - and they still benefit from it all today.
The CEO feels that he cannot give me my new contract at .50 cents, but feels it should be at .75 cents because the share price was already raised when i was re-hired two weeks later. He touts that the other executives (who have been there for approx 5-6 months now) have shares vesting over a longer period of time. Logically, i've been there double the time they have.
Do you think that because i was a victim of office politics, my efforts should be belittled and my stock options reduced in value as a result of someone having an issue with me that was never discussed even though i still contribute to that same position's responsibilities today?
Or does the CEO have a point that he cant reduce the price because the share price was already raised before i was fired? That i should be thankful that i have stock options because the executives with more experience than i do weren't getting what i was?
Please keep in mind that if the stock price goes to $20.00 per share, at 50 cents thats 5million dollars. At 75 cents, thats 3.333mil. A difference of nearly 1.7m.
Do i deserve to lose 1.7m because someone didnt like me then, even though everything is fine today?
Does this mean that i deserve to lose that because my title changed?
Does this also mean that when its time to sell the product and my title changes again im going to lose my contract again?

moreResolved Question: Texas. Why does everyone think it is the worst state in the U.S.?
Here's an example of what America thinks:
1. Texans. Socially retarded acts of bravado. Lack of self awareness.
Isolationistic in thought. Kind of like someone who was raised under a
rock, but the rock was big, so they boast about how big the rock was.
There's more, but, man, it's so sad - and they don't even know it!
2. Texas politics. I am a conservative who votes republican. Texans are
rednecks who vote republican. should I buy an "I'm with stupid" T-shirt?
3. Tx is a Mexican border state. Complete with roads traveled by drug
cartels feeding the increasing violent crime rate, drug use, and ever
expanding prison population in Tx. That isn't nice and I don't have
this problem in my state.
4. Is EVERYONE in Tx chewing tobacco??
5. Leading state for hate groups. There are more known hate
groups in tx then any other state. They all hate different groups for
different reasons. When you get right down to it, no one is safe in tx
- not even texans. Testament to tx long tradition of nice, down to
earth, clan members and level-headed cult fanatics.
6. There are Two seasons in Tx, hot and hotter. There is a third if
you count the hurricane season. A fourth if you count squirrel
season.
7. Texas' branding of Tex-mex. Uh, we all know it's just Mexican.
Maybe Kansas should capitalize on Cantonese food and call it
Kan-Can. It's catchier, and doesn't sound like a gas station when
you say it.
8. Over industrialization of undesirable industries. Yes, when you
visit tx, you get the full impact of what a cesspool they've made out
of their state with factories, oil refineries, and chemical plants.
Don't get me wrong, it is good somebody is manufacturing this stuff
out there, but, man, you've got to be six flags short of a theme park
to live amongst the stench-filled, chemical run-off, heat-fest that is
tx.
9. Texas as a state ranks in the top 5 of all states for all major
pollutants. Go figure. The EPA says you can't breathe the air for fear
of carcinogens, can't drink the water for fear of toxins, can't eat
the seafood for fear of mercury poisoning, and the Taiwanese plants
spill high levels of run-off into the neighborhoods. That isn't good
either!
10. "Clampet" stereotypes which aren't all together untrue. I've never
seen any other collective bunch unwittingly living up to negative
stereotypes. Perhaps some t-shirts can be air dropped to them. You
know, t-shirts that say something like, "thank god i struck oil, cuz
my double-wide needs a fixin"
11. Texan's general confusion between pride and reason. there is a
healthy pride, and then there is a texan pride. actually, a texan is
proud of his state like a branch davidian is proud of his cool-aid.
12. "DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS". Why would I need to mess with
Texas when it's already messed up? What's wrong with the old standby:
Yeeeeeeehaw!!!!..and other inane slogans that demonstrate
an inability to articulate one's self.
13. Corrupt institutions of business. Enron was a great. But, no one
can beat the oil companies for blood money, environmental destruction,
greed, and corruption. a texan would tell you that corruption only
exists in zip codes outside their magical state. is this true?
14. Cults and fundamentalists. Kind of self explanatory. Apparently,
tx is the perfect place for those who like to organize and be
merry while preying on kids. Gotta love tx.
15. Backwards thinking. State first? Country second, or is there
something between state and country like, i don't know, socks or
peanut butter? You gotta love state first mentality. If the country is
attacked, would tx try to side with mexico just to save their own state?
Kind of like, if the house was burning, you'd only save your favorite bathroom.
Lots of reasoning there. wait a minute! i'm going to start a new one. it's
called home owners association first! Hey tx, do you shoot people in
the back too? Buncha anti-american secessionist quitters! just kidding,
only 20% of you are the American Taliban.
16. Worst humidity and dew point. Yes it is true. Houston/bay area is
tied with annual averages for the worst humidity and dew point in the
united states per NOAA. In a nutshell, it's like a sauna. a constant
sauna for 7 months out of the year. so is hell.
17. Hurricanes. you got it. more of my tax dollars go to natural
disasters like hurricanes in tx. nothing like every hurricane season
fearing the wrath of god upon your family and home.
18. Tornadoes. this must have to do with the fact that tx leads the
nation in the amount of trailor homes as a percentage of all homes.
the good thing is, tx is flat and has nothing around for 100's of
miles. so, not many people should get hurt except those who ask for
it. you know, texans.
19. Trailer trash. "T" stands for trailor trash, tornadoes, truck
stops, terrible, tacky, terrorist, taliban, travesty, and one
more...uh...dang, i forgot.
20. Prison over population. tx just can't kill 'em fast
moreResolved Question: What lesson has India learnt from butchary of Jagmohan in Kashmir on 21 January, 1990 killing 700 people?
On 19 th January, then chief minister Farooque Abdullah resigned on appointment of Jagmohan as governor of state of RSS brand anti - Muslim communal of the kind of Punjabis of 1947 type saying he couldn't work with such a man who repetedly violated state constitution & worked arbitrarily like a dictator, Chief Martial Law Administrator or General Dyer. Jagmohan retaliated by amassing 5,00,000 Indian army in Kashmir Valley on emergency basis, first in history after 1947 making that a Military Colony. On 21 st January, 1990, a big unarmed funeral procession of a leader was passing through Lal Chowk area (downtown area like Cannaugh Place at New Delhi) in Srinagar chanting slogans like "We want freedom, freedom" , "We want Plebiscite, Plebiscite" & " We want Nizame Mustafa(Islamic rule)". Nizam means system & Mustafa is another name of Prophet Muhammed(saww). There was nothing objectionable(Indian media wrote) but Jagmohan ordered indiscriminate firing on that killing at least 700 people at the peak of winter season under mild chilling snowfall of Kashmir & imposed curfew for many days. All reporters, journalists & press correspondents were arrested by military, their tapes, notes & cameras were snatched, broken or forefeited, imprisoned in a hotel & were expelled out of Kashmir with great insults. Subhash Chakravarty of BBC was beaten mercilessly & his camera was broken to pieces. Sri Sharma of Sunday weekly from Calcutta said on BBC as, " It is a 100 % REVOLUTION by 100 % people's support undoubtedly demanding the legitimate international right of self determination given by UNSC, nothing objectionable at all, doesn't deserve such a treatment. He further said that entire area from Maisooma to Lal Chowk(two kilometere length) was full with dead bodies on the ground. " Every Indian & international journalist reported that not less than 700 people were killed, mostly young boys & bullets piercing their chests. Newspapers too reported so. Next day, Jagmohan's press release said, " Only 35 persons have been killed." The very next day, most of INDIAN journalists modified their figure to 35 to prove their PATRIOTISM(Oh professional reporting !). "Frontline" from Madras, somehow showed photographs of scores of shoes lying on the roads from Maisooma to Lal Chowk. None knows so far where army trucks threw those dead bodies (such a big insult). Next order was the search operation by removing people out of their houses for hours putting them under open sky during snowfall causing frost bites, maiming & losses of many lives under shadow of guns of military. Looting of valuables & harassments of ladies inside the houses by army were reported in very large numbers. Those became orders of days. On 25 th Jan., 1990 a Pakistani battalian entered Kashmir very quickly, killed five I A F officers & many soldiers at various places & left safely, completely undetected by Indian army till Mirza Aslam Baig said about that on 22 nd Sept 1998 hinting exposure of weakness of Indian army that what can happen if such forces are sent quickly in large numbers everywhere in the valley in exigencies. He did say that Pakistan was not training Kashmiris rather, if needs arose, he could have sent Pakistani forces to do ANYTHING quickly at will as the battalion did, meaning being very clear. Indian establishment continued same policy of oppression, repression, suppression, subjugation & bludgeoning intio sibmission having no other positive policy for solution since then but there is not an iota of change in people's mood showing their strong stand about the so called legitimate right of self determination given by UNO(principled stand as said by them) despite sacrificing 7,00,000 precious lives for that after eaxctly 20 years today. Jagmohan told then Minister for Kashmir Affairs, George Fernandes(who said on BBC) that by military action when he would kill 3-4 lakh ( lakh = 1,00,000) saale harami ( Muslims), everything would be silent & dead.
Even after 20 years, India is standing on the same place in Kashmir matter b coz of belligerent, adamant & intransigent attitude. Did she learn any lesson in last 20 years ?
Can people sacrifice their basic right with time & heavy loss of life for surrendering to slavery( they say so) ?Pakistan's former army chief Aslam Baig sent those commandoes to Kashmir in the same manner as Indian ones were sent in Sindh from 1982 to 1998, proved beyond question. He sent for retaliation to teach India a lesson & send a clear message that 3 million Mukti Bahini terrorists sent by India during 1966 -1971 period was a great mistake & cannot be repeated.Pundits' population in Kashmir in 1990 was only 80,000. More people die in road accidents than them in India as said by Indira Gandhi to them in 1984(Sunday Mail, New delhi).India did covert terrorist operations in Sindh from 1982 to 1998 as admitted by journalist Praveen Swamy & former RAW chief Anand Kumar Verma on BBC RADIO on 12 December, 2009 at 8.15 pm. Praful Bidwai too presented proofs many times. Atal Bihari Vajpayee sai in mid February 1990 as , " India must retaliate Pak's actions in Punjab & Kashmir by INCREASING her similar actions in Sindh MORE & MORE" as reported in Indian Express too. Read archives. What India did by raising Mukti Bahini on a "foreign soil", NOT DISPUTED TERRITORY like KASHMIR, by MILITARILY interfering INTERNAL MATTER of a foreighn nation(by VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAW) is a BIGGER CRIME than interfering in a disputed territory, NOT a part of India(UNSC RES. dt. 5 Jan, 1949. Know LEGAL facts finely before arguing absurdly.I'm not a Pakistani but visited Kashmir's every point after 1990 much more than any Indian without security. To SD : In 1947, RSS< H. Mahasabha , Akali goondas , Dogra army & Indian army killed 5,00,000 Muslims in Jammu, Udhampur, Kathua, Rajauri & Poonch & pushed same number of them to Pakistani Punjab by force. They must return as per para 6 of UNSC resolution dated 5 January, 1949, before PLEBISCITE(Kashmir Times). In August, 1965, before war, Indian army expelled 1,36,000 Muslims of Batmaloo locality of Srinagar & sent to Azad Kashmir(NEW YORK TIMES dt 15 August, 1965). All those MUST come back to their houses much befor Pundits. Pundits MUST SUPPORT for them bu why don't they do so ? Will you not support ? Tell honestly & modify your BIASED faulty answer. To SD : Be to the point & never divert attention from Central point by linking irrelevant things. Your sources are bogus , prepared in VHP headquarters.
Why is never any armed freedom struggle in Azad Kashmir & why only in Indian held part only ? Why are BLACK DAYS celebrated in ENTIRE Kashmir on 26 th Jan, 13 th July(Martyres Day), 15 th August, 27 th October(date of Indian army, OFFICIALLY illegally landing Srinagar airport in 1947& occupying Kashmir Valley, already revolted against India & Maharaja from July, 1947 itself) every year ? Read books of Premnath Bazaz(Pundit), Prof Alastair Lamb, Stanley Wolpert, Patric French & Victoria Scofield on Kashmir. Victoria's book : Kashmir in Conflict (Amazon Books) is a wonder book to demolish all your claims.
India's Patiala Sikh army landed Srinagar on 17 th October 1847, 5 days before so calle irregular Tribal invasion on 22 nd October , 1947. Obviously, India was the aggressor in the state. What about actions in Jammu to Poonch ?

The Skull Necklace
Weird Thoughts, weird events.
A young, beautiful lady, appearing to be in the middle stages of her twenties, held in her arms a precious brand-new baby. A moment ago the baby was in a hand-weaved basket left outside in the freezing winter coldness. It felt like a blizzard, but it wasn’t. The baby had two blankets on her, and toys and clothes. Someone knocked on the door politely and then left before the lady could see the stranger’s face. She decided to keep the baby as her own child. The lady had been planning a child, but not to come up on her front porch. She didn’t plan for it to happen on such a cold night either.
The lady had brown eyes, blond hair, and freckles. She used glasses for reading a book, but for cooking and sleeping and working, she kept them off. Her name was Anneliese. It sounded like royalty, but honestly, she was poorer than anyone in the village. At least she lived there in the first place. The lady had a beautiful house. It was white on the outside, and looked like a palace where a queen and king would live
The little baby had green eyes and tiny brown hairs sticking out of her head here and there. There was a skull necklace that hung around her neck. Beautiful. The skull was silver and the rest of the medallion was black. On the front of the skull was written in cursive and gold letters:
Serena
So Anneliese called the baby Serena Skull because Serena was a beautiful name and because a skull necklace was the first thing Anneliese saw when she looked at the baby. Serena enjoyed playing just like any ordinary baby, but still Anneliese knew there was something different about the baby. Something she couldn’t figure out.
After the incident of Serena being dropped off at a stranger’s front porch and being taken in as their own she became grown up. Serena was now a ten-year-old. Her brown hair grew out long to the middle of back. She still had pure emerald-green eyes. The weird thing was that when Serena was a baby the skull necklace fit her perfectly, but it still fit her perfectly. She surely had a bigger neck then a baby’s, but there was no mistake that the skull necklace was really her size. The silver and black still looked shiny and brand-new. The carved, gold letters of Serena’s name outshined anything on the medallion.
Serena stayed in her room for a minute. Then she brushed her long brown hair and put the contacts in her eyes. She turned herself around on the chair that could spin around and lean back. She picked up her book.
Serena walked down the steps and sat down in the main room. She sat down on a couch. The couch was a dark red color, almost maroon. It actually did look like rich people lived in that house. There was bookcases all around the room filled with books in all shapes and sizes. Against the wall was a plasma TV. It was very shiny. She read her book she had just got about skulls from the local library. What did skulls actually, really mean? She was about to find out. It was specifically about the symbol of a skull. It read:
The symbol of the skull is simple if you know what a skull is. The skulls are the head of a human body underneath your hair and skin. But without thinking of the skull in your head, think of your ancestors. There are very many myths about pirates having skull medallions.
Serena paused. She held up her skull medallion to her face and observed it. It didn’t look like a pirate’s sign. But then again, she really didn’t know. Serena had to read on to actually know. She put it back down again. Then, she continued reading the book.
Actually, the skull medallions come from witches and wizards, the good ones. They joined a group long ago called “The Skull Group”. It’s very obvious, yet secret. No one could get in unless the leader of the skulls allowed it. Their slogan was “We fight ‘till death!”. These wizards and witches had dragons. Dragons are mythical creatures that many mortals say are not true, but they are. They can come in many colors, but you mostly see dragons in red. Blue dragons are very, very rare. And once they have a baby they would give the medallion to the baby and the dragon goes with it‘s new owner or owners. If they have twins then the kid’s are both the owners of the dragon. If they have two kids, but one is older, then the older one will get the dragon until twenty and they will switch off every ten years.
Serena put down the book and held her medallion in her hand tightly. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She couldn’t be. She couldn’t be! Wait…if she was a wizard then where was her dragon? Why had her mother and father left? Why haven’t they come back to get her? So many questions raced through Serena’s mind. So many answers left out there in the open world. Serena finally opened her eyes and shut the book with a huge noise.
Everything went too quickly. Serena erased the thoughts fro

This preference for symbols over substance, and this unwillingness to stick to a morally clear if unpopular course, is where Obama decisively parts ways with the transformative political movements from which he has borrowed so much (the pop-art posters from Che, his cadence from King, his "Yes We Can!" slogan from the migrant farmworkers – si se puede). These movements made unequivocal demands of existing power structures: for land distribution, higher wages, ambitious social programmes. Because of those high-cost demands, these movements had not only committed followers but serious enemies. Obama, in sharp contrast not just to social movements but to transformative presidents such as FDR, follows the logic of marketing: create an appealing canvas on which all are invited to project their deepest desires but stay vague enough not to lose anyone but the committed wing nuts (which, granted, constitute a not inconsequential demographic in the United States). Advertising Age had it right when it gushed that the Obama brand is "big enough to be anything to anyone yet had an intimate enough feel to inspire advocacy". And then their highest compliment: "Mr Obama somehow managed to be both Coke and Honest Tea, both the megabrand with the global awareness and distribution network and the dark-horse, upstart niche player."

moreResolved Question: How can I stop misspelled words from having the red underline in MS Word 2007?
Hey folks,
I'm writing a doc which I need to send to some people in my company, it has to be sent out in Word format (.docx).
Here's my problem, my doc has loads of words that aren't real words, brand names and such, as well as fragment sentences that are, in fact, slogans and lyrics. obviously locally I can add them to my dictionary or set spellcheck to ignore them, so they don't have the little red/green underline, but how can I set it so that those things don't show up when someone else opens it on their machine? Usually I'd just make it into a pdf, but I've been asked for it in Word format.
Cheers.

When BMW first made a strong push into the US market, it positioned the brand as being the only automobile that offered both luxury and performance. At that time, American luxury cars were seen by many as lacking performance, and American performance cars were seen as lacking luxury. These both attributes were successfully conveyed by the BWM at US market. The clever slogan 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' effectively captured the newly created umbrella category 'Luxury Performance Cars'.”
