Resolved Question: CSI New York; Compass killer, hidden clues?

To those of you who watched CSI New York on channel Five yesterday (Friday 23/1/10), did you notice there seemed to be visible clues that didn't seem to be incorporated in the plot line. On the first compass when the scratched out engraving was revealed, there was further writing underneath? At the site of the second murder when the shoe-prints were being photographed there was writing in the soil that wasn't part of the shoe-print? Did you see it, Is this some clues for a future competition or failed subliminal advertising? more

Resolved Question: Jobcentre question "found a job through job centre, been told there is a lump sum they give you"?

Morning all i was on JSA and yesterday i had an interview and got a job yay lol, the job was advertised through the Job Centre. I had been told that if you apply for a job through the Job Centre and it was successul, the Job Centre gives you a sum of money as you was on JSA and found the job through them. My girlfriend was in the same situation and she got a lump sum as she found the job through them. She got along the lines of about £150 - £200. She cant remember what it was called though as it was nearly 2 years ago. Is anyone out there in the same position or have been or knows whats what. Thanks for your answers and enjoy the rest of your day. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Are black people at a lower risk of skin cancer than white people? - Two very conflicting opinions...?

Sorry if this gets a bit long-winded, but I really find this quite shocking: I have here the top google hit for asking the question: 'Are black people at a lower risk of skin cancer?' It also happens to be Cancer Research UK's Website - Cancerhelp.org. The link is to their 'Risks and Causes' page, the one that flagged up as the first google hit for the above question. Their only reference to black people is under the 'Who is most at risk' section and even then only in one sentence in one paragraph! This seems to be a fairly comprehensive page, covering everything from age, family history and other ilnesses, to chemicals, smoking and radiation exposure! - Each of which has their own section! The worst has yet to come... The single sentence that refers to black people on the 'Risks and Causes' page of Cancer Research UK's website (one of, if not THE top cancer charity/research organisation in the UK) is: "Black skinned people are less likely to get skin cancer, but they can be at risk on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands." I was shocked (to say the least) at reading this, bearing in mind where I had read it and the fact that I had been looking for a sensible and informative answer. I guess you could pull from it that black people are at less risk of skin cancer and from reading the rest of the page you could probably work out why, but if you were to take them at their word? What, should black people try to always wear gloves and socks in times of high exposure? I think not. Somehow I couldn't see it selling in Africa, especially if it was coming from a white person, as I suspect, (just by reading that sentence) that this article is. That said, I find it very hard to imagine how they could sunburn their hands and bottoms of their feet, other than laying on their backs with their hands and feet in the air?! Lol. So, Black people of the United Kingdom, Cancer Research Uk's top advice to you is: Don't have sex in intense sunshine and if you do, be sure to wear gloves and socks at all times! The link is below if you want to see it for yourselves. http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/type/skin-cancer/about/skin-cancer-risks-and-causes Also, besides all the joking there seems to be a more serious point. The 7'th Google hit for the same question was a page on skin cancer from brownskin.net, which, as the name suggests is a site written by and for black people and is largely about skin. Alarmingly, this page states quite clearly that black people have a false sense of security regarding the risk of skin cancer and that whilst the amount of black people who contract skin cancer is lower overall, the mortality rate is in fact higher! I believe this is an American site, but it certainly sounds believable. Given C' R' UK's "advice" on the subject is so flimsy and I would say perhaps even a little insulting. Especially so, when that sketchy/insulting advice directly contradicts the advice of a 'black skin' website? Again, the link if you wish to see it yourselves. www.brownskin.net/cancer.htm I find it really quite alarming that this seems to be such a grey area, when today in 2010, a good % of our population is not white. My original question was going to be 'are black people less at risk...' but I think as I've gone on the question is perhaps more appropriate if along the lines of: Is there a massive oversight on the part of the leading cancer awareness organisations in the UK and possibly the rest of the world? And could, or even should, more be done to raise awareness amongst black people and advertise that whilst they may be at less risk of being damaged by the Sun's UV rays, they are at a high risk of mis-diagnosis or un-awareness that they are vulnerable? I'm not trying to stir an arguament, or say anything intended to offend anyone, I have genuine concerns about this (potential) issue. I am looking forward to hearing some interesting and informative answers. Please, if you don't have anything sensible to say, keep it to yourself. Thanks.Update: I still have no answer. My question was, in simple terms, 'should more be done to educate black people on skin cancer, seeing as the 'black skin' website I read seemed to think that black people have a "false sense of security" & higher mortality rate. I genuinely wondered this, and when I tried to research it I found vague & contradicting information. Since Cancer Research uk have such little to say on the matter, I put it (again) that could/should more be done to raise awareness amongst black people? -That whilst yes, they are at less risk of being damaged in the first place, but does that very fact mean that they are at a higher risk of fatality or mis-diagnosis? I never disputed that their skin is less likely to burn or contract skin cancer, but it seriously worries me that there is not more information. Perhaps "Black people are at less risk of having their skin damaged by the sun, but EVERYONE should address any suspicions with the same urgency and importance. Also, Im not racist, not in the slightest. I'd have thought that anyone with any degree of intelligence would see that my question is regarding the health & well-being of black people. Quite how one could derive racist sentiments from this, I cannot understand. There are some truly narrow-minded people in the world. It saddens me greatly, that today in 2010 one cannot open a topic regarding skin colour (no-matter how sensitively/carefully they word it!) without being 'branded' by two or three others as a racist! It makes me sick. I echo my sentiments from before: If you don't have anything sensible to say, spare us it. I would have thought that in such a diverse society, people could discuss each other's colour freely, perhaps I was mistaken. Do you really think id have spent half my evening writing a question, to have a discreet racial dig or spark an arguament? You are hugely mistaken, I thought I made my intentions clear from the off. I'm still looking for an answer though. K more

Resolved Question: What is this advert...?

Ok, I watched an advert where 2 guys are sitting at a table in an empty room. Behind them is a board which has a very long and complicated equation written on it in a black marker. One guy stands up and walks out of the room and when he does the other guy gets up and changes a minus sign in the equation to a plus sign. He then sits back down and waits for the 1st guy to return, who notices straight away that something is wrong! I was telling one of my friends and she hasn't seen it yet, but i can't for the life of me remember what it was advertising. Catch line at the end was something like, our humour is different to yours. Can anybody help me find it??? more

Resolved Question: I'm thinking about setting up a t shirt business...Few Questions...?

Right, this idea has been playing on me for a while, i'm a big photoshop user and come up with some great designs, i also have hand drawn images thrown my way to use every so often. My idea is to set up a T shirt printing business but selling my own stock of t shirts and hooded tops (zip up and pullover) and on the side line doing custom orders. Heat Transfer, Vinyl Printing and Screen Printing...Which one is best, for business? Also saying buy whole stock i buy a t shirt at £1.00 would selling them for £15.00 each be ok? and buying a hodded top for 3.50 and selling them for £18.00 is that a good price? I know i will need some capital to buy stock and printing equipment as well as setting up a website. I do have a long term plan which includes a lot of promoting incl' Car shows, fashion shows, word of mouth, leaflets also self advertising ( wearing a t shirt which company contact info ) as well as having my car carrying signs about the company. My ideal annual turnover is £248.725 with the wholesale costs, promoting costs, web hosting and printing costs deducted. How come tax would be taking off? I would be proposing this idea towards a family member who runs multiple businesses and might be interested in this venture. also more costs that i need to take into account please let me know :) more

Resolved Question: Hi, Can anyone please help me with this questionnaire. Thank you and merry xmas and a prosperous new year!?

In this questionnaire you are presented with a series of situations that are encountered by Sainsbury's Trainee Managers in their day-to-day work. For each of the situations your task is to read the description and the four options for dealing with that situation. You then need to rank the options in line with what you feel is the best course of action to take first in the situation. (Rank each action from '1'=Best Choice; to '4'=Worst Choice). When reviewing the options in each situation, you may feel that there is more than one suitable answer. Remember that you should always choose the option you feel would be the best course of action to take first in the situation. As this questionnaire only concerns how you would personally react in certain situations, not how well you know Sainsbury's, please disregard any prior knowledge you have relating to Sainsbury's standard policy and procedures when answering each question. This questionnaire should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. While there is no time limit, we recommend that you avoid spending too much time considering each question. Please ensure you allow enough time to complete the questionnaire in one sitting - it is not possible to save your responses unless you complete all of the questions. Finally, we recommend that you complete the questionnaire in a quiet area where you will not be disturbed. You are a Trainee Manager on the Sainsbury's 'Trainee Manager Scheme'. Resolved Question: Currys UK, can I take my product back to ANY currys store? or the exact one I bought it from?

Hi, I bought a camcorder from a currys in my local town (nightmare to park! costs a fortune), which is soon shutting down. I only bought it from there because the other currys in my town (in an industrial estate with free parking/easy access) didn't have what I wanted in stock. I bought it last weekend, can I take it back to ANY currys store, or does it have to be taken back to the exact store I bought it from? I have already phoned the customer service phone line, and as usual no one seems to know their own job anymore. It's got a dead/stuck/hot pixel, and I am NOT happy. I was NOT made aware of this when purchasing it, and it says nothing about it in the manual. Also under the 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979' that products bought should be: As described - refers to any advert or verbal description made by the trader. Satisfactory quality - covers minor and cosmetic defects as well as substantial problems. It also means that products must last a reasonable time. But it doesn't give you any rights if a fault was obvious or pointed out to you at point of sale. I was NOT made aware at time of purchase that camcorders often have a pixel problem, so I see this as false advertising and I want my money back, if camcorders are known to have a pixel or two missing/stuck then why was I not told this at time of purchase. (I put all this extra crap info in because I know there is always some smart bum who will go on about it, even though that wasn't the original question!). Thank you. PS, the reviews online for currys are pretty poor, most people saying they refuse to refund/exchange even though it states on the back of the receipt: If the product is faulty within the first 28 days you are entitled to a refund or exchange. If a fault occurs any time after that period, you are entitled to have the product repaired.Hi, thank you both for your replies so far. bouncer bobtail, you said 'Curry's will repackage it and sell it as new to some other poor sap.' and it's funny you should say that. Because went into the shop to get it for me, I noticed once she got in the car that there was no seal on the box at all, I always thought electrical goods were sealed? So now I am wondering if someone had already had it/tampered with it before me! I am going back to Currys tomorrow with my mum. My mum tried taking it back to the original store today, and the ignorant bloke refused there was a dead/hot/stuck pixel and refused to refund, he made my mum feel so small she had to leave the shop. more

Resolved Question: I'm self employed and the person I work for wont pay me! Help?

I see a job advertised in a shop window for a flooring specialist, training up to 3 years promising after 3 years money can go up to £1000 pound a week after training. So gave them a call and got offered a weeks trial which I passed. After a few weeks started to not get paid on time, working very long hours for only £30 a day which I didn't mind because that's what I applied for the job for thinking that it would be well worth it at the end of the 3 years. Then a little while longer down the line my cheques were coming in short then when I started to question why they were short all the response I got was 'If you dont like it you know what to do'. I have always been civil, polite and hard working and then got rude texts from him saying he's not going to pay me for the 3 days he owes me. He has put me into debt because of the payments he wont pay me. I have a family to support so near to christmas and don't know what to do next. Please help? more

Resolved Question: 10 oints for best answer.the benefits of good communication skills in a law firm?

I`ve typed up this so far, is it ok? 10 points to th person for helping me add and explain more? If lawyers can communicate effectively, they are more effective in every dimension e.g. in the courtroom, getting more cases, advertising etc. An attorney that can speak coherently would not only make more sense to a jury or judge, but they're also more likely to win cases since they are seen as being intellect and logical. This will help the firm to gain many clients as the solicitors will be representing the firm positively. In other words, good communication allows people to trust in the organisations abilities Better communication among staff will lead to greater motivation and productivity because if employees feel included in management discussions and if they feel that information is flowing, they will put more effort in and be happier in the workplace. In addition, employee motivation can be the difference between success and failure for your law business. Also, by having good flow of communication, means that management sometimes involve the workers in decision making, this means that they will be more focused on achieving their targets , and more aware of exactly what they need to do. This will lead to increased efficiency and a greater sense of purpose. Legal professionals with strong communication abilities are able to build rapport with colleagues, which can help move projects along more efficiently. They know whose expertise to tap when they need assistance and are adept at resolving conflicts and building consensus among team members. Better team work will help the firm to better efficiency which will improve the profit margin (achieving business objective). In addition, the more a staff member knows and understands the better they are to do their jobs, the more efficient they are increasing fees from clients and lead time, increasing profit levels. This will also lead to better court performance`s which will enhance the firm`s reputation and have positive impact on the bottom line in terms of profit. more

Resolved Question: End of the line..you should like this..old but good?

The Job Centre Assistant sorts through her file and replies. "Oh, yes, here it is. OK, the job entails you getting patients ready for the gynaecologist." "You have to help the ladies out of their clothes and underwear, lie them down and gently wash their nether regions. Then apply shaving foam and shave off all the hair, then rub in soothing oils so they're ready for the gynaecologist's examination." "There's a starting annual salary of £85,000,- but you're going to have to go to Glasgow ." Oh, why? Is that where the job is?" he asks. Resolved Question: Question about Jobseeker's Allowance?

Ok so a couple months ago I went to a few interviews for an apprenticeship in IT, and they said I got it but they can't run the course unless they have least 10 people sign up for it. At the moment I'm the only one who has been accepted. So I have to wait til January for them to advertise it and start the course up. This is all well and good but I have absolutely no money and I don't see the point in getting a job for just 2 months (I would end up stuck in a rut and never being able to quit) so my father has suggested I sign on for jobseeker's allowance til January. However I'm not sure if I'm eligible as I suppose I'm not actively "seeking" a job; I have one lined up. Does this matter? Should I tell them about the apprenticeship? Will they still make me look for a job? I have heard a lot of rumours about the Jobcentre so I would like to know exactly what I'm dealing with first. I have looked on the website but there was nothing relating to my situation. Any help would be very much appreciated! PS: Sorry if this is in the wrong category I had no idea where to put it. more

Resolved Question: Anybody got the Nokia 5800?

I'm looking into getting a contract phone as my phone (nokia n95) screen is slightly going. Plus i want a better offer cause currently i only get free texts to o2 numbers for a £10 top up. I've seen the Nokia 5800 advertised on the Dial-A-Phone website for £16.69 effective cost per month (half price line rental for 12 months for the 18month contract) The offer sounds great as it's not much more than what i'm paying now and i get 600 mins & unlimited texts. The phone looks decent, similar type gadgets to the Nokia N95 but i'm not entirely sure on this phone, I've gone through review after review and i get the impression the phones good but yet there still seems to be few people who state the cons. (all phones have them) But if anyone has the phone please give me your own personal review. & would it be more of a step-up from the N95 or a step down? I love my N95 it's a brilliant phone, i'd love the N97 but the contracts are whey to expensive for my liking. more

Resolved Question: i dont want to go back to work anymore.?

they are really annoying me now. i work for a national company. a popular supermarket. i work in the customer restaurant. havent been working there long. i was made unemployed at christmas and i also moved towns due to my boyfriends work this was the first interview i got nevermind a job offer. i took the job coz i was fed up of being at home alone while my boyfriend works full time in a hope i would also make friends. i have been working in restaurants since i left school so i knew what to expect and tbh i must admitt that am getting a bit fed up with this line of work. even tho they give me the 17 hours im contracted to they dont give me them on the days im contracted to so i cant arrange to go back home for the day or anything i have noticed that i always get given the crap jobs (like cleaning the bins out or being on potwash) even tho other people have turned up late or whatever. im not the newest starter either. it took me 6 months to get this job and i feel totally let down by it. i dont understand why i get treated like this. i help out whenever i can and i dont mess about like some of the others do. they are currently advertising positions in other departments so i wrote a letter saying i would be interested in a transfer so i could learn new skills in retail but they turned it down. after that i also asked if i could transfer to a differnt store as i am considering moving back to my home town and they said no because i havent worked there for a year. i know i should stay employed til i get a new job but the thought of going in today turns my stomach! never mind until i find a new job (since it took me 6 months to get this one). im not sure what to do. its really depressing me. more

Resolved Question: 66101 shelved after only 3 calls per day?

The text a crime line has been shelved until the Autumn despite only being set up in March this year costing god alone knows what but with a £3.5million advertising budget. Only 3000 calls received (wonder how many led to arrests) nationwide. The home office say they have plans to introduce it again in the Autumn but it will not run in the interim as this is not cost effective! Firstly how successful do you think this has been ? Secondly do they only employ numpties as spokespersons? Thirdly, if the first launch netted £3.5million in advertising revenue can someone please supply me with the name of the company so that i can buy shares?Happy Murcia, i echo your concerns but i think the shooting thing is a step too far? Vote them out better?Ben Gunn, yes, i wondered if anyone else would spot that - their figures - not mine - shows how clever they are doesn't it?Cool Hal, it would be nice if just for once they could think things through properly without spending our money on lost causes. Mind you, this was under Jacqui Smith's aegis so probably best shelved anyway. more

Resolved Question: How do ISPs/Phone providers get info? And from where?

just earlier, i got a phone call from British Telecom. They were Just advertising a product. But what concerned me was they rang me while i was at work, on the work phone line. They called me by my name. I havent been a customer of BT, ever, and i havent worked long enough at my job to be down in their records (my manager said so) or anyone elses for that matter. How did BT know i work there? No one but my manager and my family know, and they havent told anyone. im genuinely annoyed at this lack of privacy.EDIT: i havent posted that i'm working there ANYWHERE. Ive told my family and girlfriend, but there's been no written acknowledgment of it anywhere. This is why im so weirded out :S more

Voting Question: advertising a food stall...?

what would you do to advertise a 'new' food stall? we have a licence to locate one on a busy roadside which is lined with office parks and residential complexes on either side. Price would have to be taken into consideration as some of the companies may already have a canteen. we looking at maybe starting off with 'snacks' eg. samoosas etc till we build a client base and find out from the customers what they would like to eat. any ideas on getting this off the ground would help please? thank u more

Resolved Question: Bt line rental contract cancellation fee!?

Last month i phoned sky to switch my line rental to them, as they advertise that its cheaper than BT (I've had BT line rental for 5+ years, but have always had my calls through sky). Today i have my last bill from BT and they have charged me £82 cancellation fee! apparently i was on a 12 month renewable contract, which i'd agreed (resigned) to by phone about 2 months ago. How can they do this!? I only switched to save £1-2 per months and i've been slapped with £82 bill! Surely there is something i can do? Neither sky or BT warned me that switching would/could incur a cancellation fee. I know you normally can't cancel within the first 12 mths, but i've been with sky for years. more
