Voting Question: How much do YouTube contests cost to run?

I would like to run a contest as part of an advertising campaign for my business. Does anyone have some information on the costs involved with using YouTube to run a contest? I cannot seem to find any information stating that there are costs involved, but I assume that there must be? Any information would be very helpful. more

Open Question: Could you critique a promotional video that I made? How is it? How Could I Make it Better?

I made a video on YouTube in which a plush doll Dogbert promotes an idea for me. Basically, he is encouraging people to vote for my idea in an online contest. I haven't had much response from this video. I'm looking for people who have experience promoting (i.e. advertising and marketing) their businesses, ideas, and so forth online using YouTube. Could you tell me what you think about it? What are the good vs. bad? Is it funny? Etc. Here is a link to my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRRlCJppCZI I appreciate your help. more

Resolved Question: How would I bulk mail this? Non-Profit?

I am a 9th grader and I am setting up an academic contest for 3rd to 8th graders in my county. There will be monetary prizes for the top couple winners of the contest. However, each person entering the contest must pay a $15 test fee. 100% will be donated to the American Red Cross -Haiti Relief Fund. How would I advertise this? This is 100% non-profit and I do not have a non-profit tax ID number. I tried calling newspapers to write articles, but I haven't received a response yet. Advertising is very expensive in the newspapers so what should i tell them? I can also mail postcards and flyers, but how would I do that in bulk mailing? I do not have an address list or anything.. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How do you find a sponsor? what is a sponsor?

I'm a high school student, and I'm doing a poetry contest around my county. There is an entry fee for the contest, and that money will be donated to a charity. The charity has agreed to endorse me (not monetarily). So, my question is: what is a sponsor? because I need someone to help me advertise, and I need someone to help me raise the money for the prize fo the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the contest--money which I don't have, and if I don't get enough submissions, I don't want to get out of my own pocket. So, can anyone please explain to me the exact role of a sponsor? because I read the wikipedia definition and other definitions and I really can't understand? also, can anyone explain to me what would be the role of a sponsor considering my situation. and, who could be a sponsor for me? could I ask barnes and noble, or a local library? Thanks! more

Voting Question: What should I do about this World of Warcraft ban?

My friend had his WoW account banned. He only had it for a few days, and he got a message saying he was permanently banned for 'advertising third parties' on public chats. He has never once posted an ad, and rarely even talks. He only talks to his guild, or occasionally says 'thank you' to those who buff him. He used Linux, so it seems unlikely that he has a keylogger, but no one else had his password. Some help please? What should he do? He has already responded to the Blizzard email to contest it, but he has had no response. He uses wireless internet, and suspects he may have been hacked. His antivirus shows no issues. more

Voting Question: How should i go about trying to get a sponsor for my online contest?

I am currently holding a contest online for musicians, you can see my website www.notstrictlydubstep.com Basically, what I want to know is what would be the best way for me to approach potential sponsors? Should I just email them and ask them to sponsor the contest and I offer them advertising? Is it standard to offer monetary compensation as well? I would just like to get this thing hoppin, so any advice would be great! Thanks, i hope im asking in the right place I'm new to this. more

Voting Question: My appeal was denied, but I still want to fight this parking ticket. Where should I begin?

I received a $50 ticket because of a Winter Parking Ban. I appealed it because I wasn't given sufficient notice (If you're going to charge $50, you might as well put up some signs. Other towns I've lived in circulate parking ordinances by mail). My appeal was denied on the grounds that the ban was advertised on a local radio station (sorry, I listen to NPR) and there are signs posted throughout town (not remotely true). Now I'm going to pay the fee, so I won't get hounded. Nevertheless, I would still like to contest this. Should I request a court date? Do I have a non-feasanse case? This isn't actually about the money, so I'm willing to spend more than $50 for justice (within reason ;-)). more

Resolved Question: Which Poem Should I Pick?

I have to do a prestentation on a poem for grade 11 english, but I hate poetry and dont know much about it. So I have a couple possibilties, both by Emily Dickenson. I'm Nobody! Who Are You? by Emily Dickinson. I'm nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody, too? Then there's a pair of us - don't tell! They'd advertise - you know! How dreary to be somebody! How public like a frog To tell one's name the livelong day To an admiring bog! For Each Ecstatic Instant by Emily Dickinson. For each ecstatic instant We must an anguish pay In keen and quivering ratio To the ecstasy. For each beloved hour Sharp pittances of years, Bitter contested farthings And coffers heaped with tears. So thats the 2 I kind of like, because they are easy and have an obvesous meaning. I haven't got time to pick through for the...deeper meaning. Which should I use? more

Resolved Question: What activity would get someone to sponsor a dog?

I need something that a dog can do in the winter. i need it to be something multiple dogs can do in a contest, and people can pay to sponsor the dog. I'm doing this to raise money for my local animal shelter. i am thinking i can get someone to "rent" a dog, (with me staying with the dog the whole time for obvious reasons.) and they could advertise with the dog and the "renter". or is there any ideas you have that could earn the animal shelter a lot of money? i don't want it to be a contest on the dogs skill because the dogs vary in skill and obedience. i just need some kind of way to earn the animal shelter money, and get a LOT of people from my small town to come and participate! thanks! best answer gets "best answer" lol jk more

Resolved Question: What is this very old tv game show?

I saw this years ago on the game show network, and never again since. It was in black and white, and the host stood behind a desk that shamelessly advertised the show's sponsor. I don't remember the name of the sponsor, but by the look of the show it was from the 40's or 50's. People had to perform strange and difficult things for prizes. I'll set the stage... Two stools were set up, and on each of them was a tea cup. The contestant had a T shaped stick, and the stools were just barely further apart than the length of the top of the T. Attached to either side of the top of the T was a ball on a string. The object was to drop one ball into the tea cup, and without knocking anything over, drop the other ball into the other cup. Another contestant was faced with a row of chairs, seven of them, which were all facing towards the audience, side by side. The contestant had to stand behind the first chair, and by pushing only, line up all seven chairs front to back. And so he pushed the chair in a circle until it lined up with the second chair, continued pushing them both in a circle until they lined up with the third chair, and so on until he was pushing all seven chairs (which didn't look very easy to steer) into a predetermined "parking space." Those are just examples of things they did on this show. I'd imagine there were other strange contests on other episodes. I've only ever seen it that one time, at about 2AM, and aside from occasionally checking the game show network (with no results) I don't even know how to begin to find it using traditional research, internet or otherwise. I will gladly award ten points to anyone who has any idea what I'm talking about and can point me in the right direction. Otherwise, I'm leaving it to voters. more

Resolved Question: Motivational Slogan/Quote for a College?

There's this new college opening up in a couple years and they're having a flyer contest and we need to include some kind of advertising headline. Resolved Question: Where is a good place (website or art blog) to advertise my COVER ART COMPETITION?

I'm a writer who is working on many different short stories & novels at the moment. There are 3 particular stories which I plan to have printed and bound in the near future. So, I am holding a little contest where artists have a chance to design the cover art for 3 of my novels. For this COVER ART COMPETITION, I am looking for young, amateur artists with unique ideas and talent. They can choose to design a piece of art for 1 of the 3 novels, or they could try designing for all 3 if they'd like to! The winner will have their art showcased on the cover of my novel when it is printed and bound, which will most likely be at the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011. There will be 3 winners, 1 for each of my books. I'm already advertising the competition on Quizilla, [because that's where I post chapters from some of my stories] but I'd like to find a better place to publicize it. Maybe there's a website where artists blog and share art with others... or some sort of community board where young wanna-be artists gather and chat. Haha. I don't know. So if you can think of any places where I could find a lot of willing artists, then please let me know so I can go ahead and post all of the rules and competition details there. Also, if you are interested, then just contact me and I'll fill you in! more

Resolved Question: What can be done about false advertising about a judged contest?

I entered a contest that was listed as a 'Celebrity look alike COSTUME contest." It was out of town so I called to make sure it would be judged by a panel and not applause. I'm sure everybody knows how that works, it ends up being a 'who has the most friends here tonight' contest. So the manager assured me there would be a judging panel. I put a lot of effort into my costume and even had to drive out of town to attend this event which the ended up making judged by applause at the last minute. I was the only person there in costume, I lost to 3 people wearing jeans and t-shirts. I was from out of town and didn't have all my friends there. Is there anything I can do about this injustice? more

Resolved Question: please check this letter for me~a little long..?

Hi, I'm kenwen. I have traselated this letter to English. I am really appreciate if someone could check this for me. Dec.15 is my deadline and I cannot find any native speaker around me. And two more letters need to be checked. Could you please check them for me as well? Thanks!!! By the way, I think I am good at Chinese and Japanese. I would like to help anyone with Chinese and Japanese problem. Dear Sir or Madam As Miss. xxxx’s lecturer and advisor, I know this student very well. She has extremely strong ability to learn, and high creativity. I strongly recommend her to enroll in the PHD course in your college. Firstly, Miss.xxxxx has strong ability to learn and great potential. Honestly, she is not good at Japanese at first, since her major at our University was not Japanese language. But she reached the level to speak and understand Japanese quite well after six months of stay in Japan. She could lead 15 Japanese students in a work shop to develop a creative product to promote environment conscious society, and made a presentation in front of big audience in this workshop. The team won the best team award. Also, she applied to a paper contest entitled “For Symbiosis between Japan and the World” sponsored by Nomura Research Institute, a Japan leading research and consulting firm. The title of her paper, consisting of 10 thousand words in Japanese was “Borrow the Power of Doraemon! Product placement advertising in animation”, and again awarded to Judges Special Prize in the contest. Another example to show her strong ability to learn is that she mastered advanced statistics course given in our medical school within a short period of time to the level enough to assist my PHD student in conducting an epidemic field work for the thesis. She applied statistics analysis method in the right manner and utilizes software properly, contributing to the excellent thesis. When she found an opportunity to learn, she always reached the level more than I had expected. Secondly, her creativeness really impressed me. She showed this ability both in her academic research and daily practice. In her assignment report, you can always find some interesting concepts rather than the ordinary thinking styles. I remember that when DENTSU, a Japan and World major communication firm, held a contest for paper on the advertisement, she wrote a thesis about “War and Advertising”, She gave a concept of "Pensieve advertising”. She explained that the advertisement or campaign about wars could be more than vision and narration, and any other senses of the human body could be added on. This creative idea finally won Students Advertising Paper Award. In her practice, she always used her brain very well and intensively. When she attended the internship program at Hokkaido Television Broadcasting Company, she took part in a project to introduce the tour in Hokkaido in a different way from normal reports for Hokkaido like just providing information on sites. She created a campaign proposal based upon “unique selling proposition” which was based on her research on the feathers of Hokkaido. She developed a proposal entitled“Romantic Hokkaido” and gained lots of high praise from the department she worked for as an intern. Knowing that work and her building reputation, I was also impressed and gratified. Based on both professional and individual performance, I, with confidence, admit that Miss. xxxxx has analytical as well as creative, and comprehensive talent. Also, she is really a person who sweats at brain, body and heart to accomplish the mission utilizing the talent, regardless the mission is given or she set it for herself. I believe this young woman’s unusual character will make her competent for further graduate study abroad. I would really appreciate it if you could accept her into your programs. If you want to discuss anything pertaining to her application, please do not hesitate to contact me. more

Resolved Question: I'm designing video game, who has some ideas and suggestions?

As just said, I am currently programming a video game of my own. As a story, you have entered a dance contest and lost badly. You do not know why but you suspect that you lost your groove. Now, to find out what your groove is, you will have to travel from town to town to see what's best for you. Each town has it's own music genre and theme. Here's what I have so far: Classical, Blues, Country, Oldies, Rock, Rap/HipHop, Metal, Techno, Pop, Disco, 80s I need to know if I should group any of these together? Should I split Rap and Hip Hop as to seperate genres? Should I remove the 80s "genre" because it realy isn't a genre... but I'm making the game for my sister... and she loves 80s music. And are there any genres I'm leaving out (that are actualy worth putting in the game)? Oh, and I forgot to say, it's a platform game. I am using XPivot program to make story clips (by importing sprites, I am not using stick people, for those who are familiar with pivot). I am including cheats in the game. Maybe I will have hidden worlds that can be unlocked by a code.. or something. So if anyone wants to help out, I can (if you want) put you in the credits of my game when it's finished. Please list anything that could help me. Maybe give me some cheat ideas or different genres and basicaly anything that could make this game easier to make. When the game is finished, I will probably advertise it on youtube or something. I am almost positive that I will make it freeware. Ok, Thanks!!!!Neil G had a good idea... but then I looked up all the genres and subgenres... Oh my gosh... so many... I'm talking hundreds... their is no way I could possibly get more than 100 genres of music into my game! So I don't think I could do that. Overall, I plan to have AT LEAST 10 worlds in the game, and NO MORE THAN 15 worlds. Each world will have... probably... 3 levels each. My original plan was to make each world have a different genre. Each level have a different song that has the corresponds. Gosh, I just keep rambling on! I'm gonna shut up now and listen to what you guys have to say!Ok, Here's my new world list: Blues Classical Country Dance Heavy Metal / Hard Rock Techno Pop Progressive / Oldies Rap R&B / Soul Rock more

Resolved Question: Is Facebook really Sad?

I used to be on Facebook but i deleted my account. I think it is really pathetic that people post many photos of themselves and others to try and prove to everyone that their life is so brilliant. It's just a blatant popularity contest amongst insecure individuals. Peoples contacts list saying 300-400 friends is ridiculous. Very few people have that many friends unless you are famous. And a good percentage of these people you never spend anytime with either. Another thing that drives me insane is peoples' statuses. ' Sarah is on her way sopping for an outfit for tonight' or ' Mark has hangover from last night.' Quite frankly nobody cares what you are thinking or doing. Why does these people seem to feel that they have to constantly update everyone on every action of there average lives! People have become so suckered into Facebook,Myspace,Bebo etc that they go out of there way each day to update this and add new photos to impress people. If everyones lives were so busy and hectic like many profess, they wouldn't find the time to spend ridiculous amounts of time on a social networking sites. Yes there are some good points about facebook such as advertising, keeping in touch with close family and friends but isn't that what email addresses and mobile phones are for!!?Rose, who said i was brilliant i just want opinions on Facebook etc as sombody brought the subject the other day full stop. more

Resolved Question: Do you think that womyn of all sizes, shapes, and colours should be used for advertising?

I think all womyn think so! I recently was linked to a vote that ELF cosmetics is running to chose their next company "face" and there is a womyn who typically would not get chosen for such a position. Place your vote and support this strong womyn: http://www.exploremodeling.com/Contest/Faceof_ELF_2010/21047/Portia_Allen.aspx I know that the basic idea of the vote is somewhat disagreeable - but we can subvert the intention by choosing a non "typical" womyn to be a spokesperson for ALL womyn of ALL sizes and ALL colours! Resolved Question: Do you consider this book review positive or negative? Would you buy it based on this?

"An eclectic science-fiction romp through pop culture and fringe theory. Tiffy and Cheryl Bandera, twin sisters, begin their career advertising buy-one-get-one cheeseburgers. Their magnetic appeal is palpable, but before making their recording debut, they decide to go solo—in a manner of speaking. The sisters split time as Tiffy, one of the most famous entertainers in the history of pop-culture. In response to the Milli Vanilli scandal, and lest they be discovered, a clever recasting decision is made—Cheryl becomes a martial artist and appears with Tiffy under the pretense of being her security double. This new relationship between the sisters begins to affect their PR, and fans grow to see Tiffy as an aloof, ungrateful megastar. Thus, the novel picks up the action with the sisters’creation of a win-a-date contest. They gently rig it to weed out the sociopaths, and the unassuming Brian Gullen wins the contest. Cheryl manages the vetting process and, incredibly, Brian’s abductee experiences, psychic abilities and split-personality don’t sound any serious warning bells. Cheryl is more than receptive, even intrigued. He’s a nice guy, and it’s telegraphed early that he will probably wind up with at least one of the sisters. Brian’s tales of the planet Quartzon and the adventure they have on its forest moon make for some authentically cool science-fiction, but the early narrative too easily shifts from the story proper to Brian’s correspondences, to a character’s dreams, to a slew of confusing conversations. The prose is clear and the tone witty, but the organization and particulars are often muddied by stock lamentations about scientists and skeptics’ dismissal of UFOs. However, Gullen has an uncanny ability to create eccentric characters whose concerns are nonetheless down-to-earth. Even the Mongeese, a once proud warrior race from another galaxy, are sympathetic in human terms. There are more than a few howlers, blessedly intentional, like when Cheryl makes a less than romantic bargain with Brian (eventually known as Bryan) for DNA exchange. This genuine wit keeps the reader engaged throughout the novel’s complex intergalactic machinations. "A delight for lovers of UFOs and unique fiction."This is for "The Nonevent Principle" by DC Agar. The reviewer mistakenly referred to the name of the main character "Brian" instead of the author in a couple of places. more

Resolved Question: Grand Opening Giveaway Contest Question?

In a few weeks I will open a new business and thinking about doing a special Grand Opening promotion like giveaway a few door prizes. My question is will I break any laws (North Carolina) if I make customers do a minimum purchase in order to enter this contest. Due to the nature of my business, it's does make make a huge different to one customer who spend says $50 and get the same chance as a non-purchased customer. So I was wondering may be if I advertised that a minimum purchase had to be $5 and the customer who purchased $50 worth of good would get 10 entries and have more chances. more

Resolved Question: Expired Baby Ruth laced with bugs?

I went to the movies and bought a baby ruth(which cost me $4). I opened it up and broke it in half and gave some to my boyfriend. I took a bite and I said, "It tastes like soap or something." So my boyfriend agrees. I decide that I refuse to pay for this candy bar so I start heading back to the snack bar. On the way, I looked for an expiration date, and the only date I could find was October 2007, which was some contest deadline that was being advertised on the package. That is when I noticed small bugs in the bandy bar and I about lost it... My boyfriend and I had a bite of this candy car and we are already feeling sick, but I am unsure if it was the idea of eating the bugs or if it was actually the chocolate bar being rancid. Needless to say we got free candy and free tickets. Should we be worried? more

Voting Question: Is it against the law to display a for sale sign in the window of your car in Chicago?

I am new to Chicago and recently got a parking ticket for having a for sale sign in my back window. I did not know that I could get a ticket for that. Is there is a difference between parking somewhere with the intention of drawing attention to potential buyers and parking in your neighborhood zone? My car was parked close to my home. That is the reason I parked where I did... because I was in my legal parking zone (noted on my Chicago city parking sticker) and this was an open convenient parking spot for me. A police officer came by and thought that I had parked my car in this spot in order to advertise the fact that it is for sale. Is there a difference and could I contest this? more

Voting Question: Is my friend an idiot?

Our local Best Buy is running a photo contest. Participants can submit up to 3 photos. My friend, being the nosy little shit he is, was looking at my 3 submissions and found a picture of a fish and said "Oh, don't submit this one, they're probably looking for more family-oriented pictures." So I said "Uhh... it's just a generic photo contest, what makes you assume they're looking for a specific theme that they didn't mention?" And he said "Well, they're probably gonna use it for advertising or something." He's not a photographer and there's nothing even remotely inappropriate or "off" about the fish picture, but do you think he's right? Or is he just spouting stupid bullshit that makes no sense? Usually I can tell, but this time, I don't know... more

Resolved Question: The MID 90'S RAY MERCER that gave SHEER HELL to Peak Versions of BOTH HOLYFIELD AND LEWIS vs. 1971 Joe Frazier?

"Merciless" Ray Mercer, who was quite ARGUABLY the Greatest Heavyweight to NEVER GET A SHOT at a Major Title. { The WBO was not considered a Major piece of the 90's Heavyweight puzzle, and only has been elevated recently over the last 6 years by Boxing Media Giant HBO as part of promotion and advertising to get the most out of their long term contract with Wladimir Klitschko } THAT Ray Mercer that gave peak versions of BOTH Holyfield and Lewis SHEER HELL. A Mercer that lost the Holyfield fight only because "The Warrior" came through late in signature fashion with a dramatic knockdown and rally. Against Lewis, Ray in the eyes of many ringside observers actually did enough to eke out a very close war, or at worst get a draw. The Ray Mercer that had a CHIN OF TITANIUM that the Great Lennox Lewis's BEST OVERHAND RIGHTS could not dent!.......ONLY "The Real Deals" Horrific Left Hook { a hook that the indestructable "Big" George Foreman said after he got nearly broken in half with Evander's Hook to the body, that Evander's Hook was "The BEST left hook to his body he EVER tasted! }, Only that hook was able to make Ray take a late round knee. This guy, Ray Mercer, could REALLY TAKE a punch.....AND GIVE a lot more back! "Smokin" Joe Frazier of course needs no introduction, explanation of merit, or reminding of how truly great he was. We ALL KNOW what a legend Joe was! He was a 3 minute punching machine highlighted by a VERY FAMOUS left hook. That punching machine beat a comebacking Ali in a classic contest that was punctuated with a momentary 15th round knockdown of a very proud Ali. WHO WINS this ABSOLUTE WAR between The Best Version of "The Merciless One" and "Smokin Joe"?PS: If it sounds like I'm "Cheerleading" for Ray over Joe, I can assure you that is not my intention. I simply feel that Ray's "lack of fame" necessitated him getting a little more of a build up to REMIND EVERYONE just how good he actually was. Dollbaby XO more

Resolved Question: Viagra slogans (20 characters)?

The boss of a Madison Avenue advertising agency called a spontaneous staff meeting in the middle of a particularly stressful week. When everyone gathered, the boss, who understood the benefits of having fun, told the burnt-out staff the purpose of the meeting was to have a quick contest. The theme: Viagra advertising slogans. The only rule! was they had to use past ad slogans, originally written for other products, that captured the essence of Viagra. Slight variations were acceptable. About 7 minutes later, they turned in their suggestions and created a Top 10 List. With all the laughter and camaraderie, the rest of the week went very well for everyone! The top 10 were: 10. Viagra, Whaazzzz up! 9. Viagra, The quicker pecker picker upper. 8. Viagra, like a rock ! 7. Viagra, When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight. 6. Viagra, Be all that you can be. 5. Viagra, Reach out and touch someone. 4. Viagra, Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman. 3. Viagra, Home of the whopper! 2. Viagra, We bring good things to Life! And the unanimous number one slogan: 1. This is your peepee. This is your peepee on drugs. more

Resolved Question: Trying to find the value of a baseball card. Brother got it in a contest roughly 20 years ago.?

It was in a pack of cards that used to have a piece of gum also. As far as my parents remember, there were only 12 advertised to be given out in the contest. It is a signed reggie jackson card, but I was wondering if the contest had a limited edition card which made it even more special. Sorry for the crappy explanation, but that's all I know. more

Resolved Question: Is this Legislation a violation on Civil Liberties & what do you think?

Source: http://www.gov.bc.ca/ag/ INFORMATION BULLETIN 2009AG0010-000453 October 7, 2009 Ministry of Attorney General MISCELLANEOUS STATUTES AMENDMENT ACT INTRODUCED BILL 13.... Municipalities Enabling and Validating Act – Amendments will provide the municipalities of Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler with temporary enforcement powers to enable them to swiftly remove illegal signs and graffiti during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The legislation does not change the existing scope of authority to regulate signs and graffiti. Rather, it provides, on a temporary basis, a faster way of removing signs and graffiti that violate municipal bylaws during the short period the Games are underway. Media Report: Source: The Vancouver Sun Newspaper http://communities.canada.com/vancouvers… Original report on topic by Daphane Bramham http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/2010w… Recent report: Gagging citizens for the 2010 Olympics By Daphne Bramham 12 Oct 2009 Think Tank Filed under: Vancouver, Olympics, 2010, Whistler, B.C., civil liberties, Winter Olympics, protest, Richmond, democracy Nobody wants some embarrassing incident during the 2010 Winter Games that will give Vancouver a black-eye in the global community. Afterall, we’re spending billions of dollars to put on a Winter Games aimed at boosting Canadian pride and celebrating the skills of our athletes. But the politicians have got it wrong if they think that they’re not embarrassing us by giving police, security forces or any designated municipal employee in Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler the extraordinary power to enter people’s homes and take down any “advertising-matter”— albeit with 24 hours’ notice. What’s particularly offensive about this draconian power is that no one is willing to define exactly what “advertising-matter” is. Does it include Tibetan flags? Does it only mean Pepsi posters since Coke is an Olympic top sponsor? Does it mean Olympic rings coupled with anti-Games slogans? Instead Vancouver’s bylaw (which I wrote about in the summer) and the bill currently before the B.C. legislature leaves the defining to the discretion of whoever might be designated to enforce this. The municipalities and the province are also poised to increase the penalty for sign offenders to $10,000 from $2,000 and up to six months in jail. As Robert Holmes, president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association points out, six months in jail is usually reserved for criminals, who have a record of several conviction for breaking and entering. And isn’t this rich? When I went searching for a copy of the province’s Bill 13, I found the government’s contest for middle and secondary students to produce a video to celebrate the International Day of Democracy. The contest ends Nov. 15 and the grand prize is. . . a trip to Victoria and a tour of the legislature. Here’s part of what the contest promotion says: “Democracy is dependent on the expression of ideas and a culture of tolerance. Political tolerance implies freedom of expression, open dialogue and a diversity of views. It is the role of democractic [sic] institutions, such as parliament, to mediate tensions between diverging opinions and to accommodate the participation of all sectors of society.” I’m betting that any student tackling the issue of free expression during the Olympics won’t be winning that exciting trip to see our provincial politicians in action. Resolved Question: How do you choose between science and art?

I am a Freshman in college with an undeclared major. I promised myself that I would declare my major within one semester to one year after starting school, so now that I am halfway through my first semester I am starting to really think about what I direction I should go in. The problem is that I am torn between two completely opposite and unrelated fields of study. The first choice is to declare a major in biochemistry and work towards becoming a research scientist. I haven't narrowed down the specifics of the field I want to go into, but science has always interested me. I love science classes. I love studying science and doing science homework. I used to read ahead in my Biology textbooks in high school...just for fun. A career in research would suit me because I am a very stable person. I like working alone, solving problems, and discovering things. The problem with a career like that though, is that I am also a VERY social-conscious person. I, like any other girl, have glamorous visions for my future. Of going to parties, working in NYC, dressing fashionably everyday, and being in the center of everything. It is very dismal to think of myself cooped up in a lab all day with no social life or excitement. It'd excite my nerdy side, but I could also see myself getting depressed. So my second choice is a career in the arts. Either photography, graphic design, advertising, or fashion design. This isn't a random choice. I have always been very passionate about art and design. I was in photography club in high school, have won several design contests, and even used to take college-level art courses at my local art institute. Art, though to me, is harder. It is not black and white and it stresses me out a lot more than science does. I hated every single assignment I would be given in my art classes, but somehow would always turn out something that people would awe over. One man even paid me $50 straight up for one of my projects. I admit that I have a good eye for design, but it would take a lot more work for me. I see it as the harder route. The one where I will earn less money and less prestige. Not that that should be a factor, but being successful IS important to me. A life in an art-based career would certainly be a lot of fun, and an exciting challenge, but I'm scared of it. Science seems safer, strangely enough. I don't know what to do, or how to decide between these two. If you have any advice or insight that'd be great. I just need something to get me thinking in the right perspective about this! more

Resolved Question: Do you completely lose your photo copyrights when submitting to a contest?

I'm an amateur photographer, and any time I see a photo contest of any sort (pets, kids, whatever...) they have a disclaimer saying "photos become the property of 'insert company name' and can be used for advertising or promotional purposes." Do you really sign over your copyright just by submitting a photo online? Is that even legal without your signature? more

Resolved Question: Why he was driving and why he was still in the country after three drunken-driving convictions ?

The suspended driver and illegal immigrant blew a red light and slammed a pickup into a minivan near 180th Street and West Center Road in May — killing 4-year-old van passenger Josie Bluhm. For those actions, Eleazar Rangel-Ochoa pleaded no contest Tuesday to driving under suspension, a felony, and misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide. And Rangel-Ochoa remains distraught, his attorney said. He isn't the only one. Josie's loved ones, including parents Kyle and Jayme Bluhm, have had to carry on without their 4-year-old middle child — a blonde-haired, blue-eyed bundle of fun. Advertising Jayme Bluhm was driving the couple's three children, then ages 5, 4 and 1, to day care on May 12, when the crash happened, prosecutors said. “All of these cases are horrible,” said prosecutor Matt Kuhse, who handles Douglas County's motor-vehicle homicide cases. “But it's particularly troubling when it's a child who is so, so young — especially when her life ended in such a violent way.” Rangel-Ochoa's case has been marked with questions about why he was driving and why he was still in the country after three drunken-driving convictions. Rangel-Ochoa's attorney, Joe Lopez-Wilson, said Rangel-Ochoa, 27, is torn up over his actions — and has little explanation for why he was driving. Lopez-Wilson said Rangel-Ochoa got behind the wheel of the pickup because the truck's owner wasn't going to work that day. Rangel-Ochoa and his two passengers were headed to work at a construction site. The attorney said he was uncertain whether Rangel-Ochoa's two passengers could have driven, or whether they had driver's licenses. Rangel-Ochoa didn't. His driver's license had been suspended for 15 years after his third-drunken driving conviction in 2003. It also was unclear why Rangel-Ochoa hadn't been deported after his drunken-driving convictions — all of which preceded 2003. Lopez-Wilson, who handles immigration cases, said that, back then, authorities were more concerned with illegal immigrants who committed violent offenses. Shortly after the crash, Lopez-Wilson said, his client wanted to “man up” by pleading to the charges against him. Lopez-Wilson said he wouldn't let Rangel-Ochoa do so until the attorney had a chance to review the charges and all of the evidence. (Rangel-Ochoa wasn't drunk that morning — hence the misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide charge.) Rangel-Ochoa faces up to six years in prison — five years for driving under suspension, one year for motor vehicle homicide — when he is sentenced in December. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have a deportation hold on him now — and Rangel-Ochoa is expected to be deported after he serves his sentence. “From Day One, he was distraught,” Lopez-Wilson said. “Every time I talk to him, he's downtrodden. “He knows whatever happens to him in court is temporary. He's going to have to deal with the consequences of what he did for the rest of his life.” http://www.omaha.com/article/20090930/NEWS01/709309953 more

Resolved Question: What do you think of juicystar07 (the YouTube guru)?

Well, there has been some controversy about how she is getting paid to give products good reviews. Apparently she is also treating her subscribers poorly, and treats the videos more like a business than for money. I have noticed that the videos she has been making in the past month or so have all been product reviews, or advertising for her store Glitzy-Glam, or contests. What do you think? Do you believe that she is giving products good reviews even if she doesn't like them, simply for the money? I personally find her videos very fun to watch, but I am getting skeptical towards her intentions. Tell me your opinions on her, and I will choose a best answer! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I want to find a poem I wrote?

Hey all. Back when I was 14 or 15 (1998, 1999?) I wrote an AWESOME poem and sent it in to a contest advertised in the news paper. For a few years thereafter, I was invited by mail to read it at a convention in Las Vegas... being so young, I never went. These people are probably the only ones who have a copy of this poem. Everything I owned as a child/teenager was thrown out in an eviction. I've tried searching the internet for any hint of collections and can't find anything. Does anyone have any ideas to help me find my one stroke of genius? :-P more

Resolved Question: Should each Presidential candidate be restricted to spending an equal amount of money on a campaign?

Some have opined that Obama won the last presidential election because he spent massive amounts of money on his campaign. In essence he bought the election, they opine, because he had an unfair advantage. He had more money to spend on buying advertising for self promotion. Obama had 745 million dollars to spend on his campaign, while McCain had only 84 million to spend. What do you think? Here is a link and and an article excerpt: http://blog.cleveland.com/openers/2008/12/obamas_presidential_campaign_r.html WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama, who rewrote the book on presidential fundraising, amassed more than $745 million during his marathon campaign, more than twice the amount obtained by his rival, Republican John McCain. ... In the end, Obama still had $30 million left over, raising questions about what he'll do with the excess. Overall, Obama exceeded the combined finances of the two major parties' nominees four years ago. George W. Bush and John Kerry pulled in a total of $653 million in the 2004 primary and general election campaigns, including federal public financing money. Obama's prowess at attracting money, one of the many characteristics that defined his campaign, could well spell the end of a 30-year experiment in public financing of presidential contests. After initially vowing to take public funds if McCain did, Obama became the first presidential candidate since the campaign finance reforms of the 1970s to raise private donations during the general election. ... But Obama could contribute to members of Congress, whom he will need on his side to support his agenda. He could also donate it all to the Democratic National Committee, or save it for a 2012 reelection effort. To keep the playing field even. Should donations in excess that exceed an opponents funds be returned to the donors? more

Resolved Question: You will never read another story so silly, they are so mean to me?

I work for a law firm. I am new. I was hired to be a receptionist, but aspiring for a promotion to office manager. There are only (4) of us in the office. I have had many years office management experience. I am on time. I always ask if I can help. I have a profession nice appearance. I am polite to everyone. I do my very best on the job. I am eager to learn. I am 15 years older then the office assistant and 20 years old than one of the lawyers (I am old enough to be his mother) and about the same age as the main lawyer, maybe a few years older (I have no issues with him) The "2" (how I will refer to the young lawyer and office assistant I have problems with) have experience, talent and education in areas other than office management, PR and advertising. I truly have good ideas and intentions. They refuse to accept me as trusted member of the office. I want to manage the office, not the people. I have good tried and true S.O.P suggestions I have used in the past that will make this office grow. The following is what I go through daily (that is, when the main lawyer is out of the office) When the main lawyer is in the office, we ALL go to lunch, when the main lawyer is gone the "2" go to lunch without asking me (mind you, that means there are 2 out of the 3 going to lunch, I am left behind to work, I no longer have keys to the office, I can not leave, you never know how long they will be gone. I can't get back in) The "2" will go into an office and shut the door (leaving me out) they will be in there 30-90 min, flamboyantly laughing and whooping it up. When the main lawyer is in we have an office meeting that includes all of us and no office doors are EVER closed, NEVER. We were instructed by the main lawyer to "decorate" the new office as a team. The day I was off, the "2" have the decorator come to choose colors, style and decor.(I have the same day of the week off, they deliberately scheduled this) The "2" gave me a task list of 3-4 hours of "busy work" and went to a long lunch and picked out furniture (we are capable of locking the office, all leaving and forwarding calls to cells) The "2" will NEVER answer my e-mails (not even a "K") The "2" will NEVER answer my text (not even a "K") The young lawyer speaks and looks at me with disdain The "2" will NEVER try any of my new ideas or suggestions, they hem haw around and say they don't know if they like them or not I e-mailed the young lawyer with an ad for an office that was closing, they were going to liquidate and sell their office equipment inexpensively....no one would ever consider my suggestion, it would have saved money The "2" invited the account (she is an independent contractor in the office about 6 hours per week) to go look at the new office paint and carpet....walked right past my office and did not say "hey, come on, we are going down stairs to take a look" At one time the young lawyer fired me, he said "you can finish out the day, I would prefer that you go ahead and leave now" when the main lawyer heard I was fired, he invited me back (it is HIS firm) and this is how we have been working ever since. The main lawyer is gone a lot and there is no one to referee. I love my job, but the people (the "2") suck! In today's economy I want to save my job. Remind you, this is not about a popularity contest. I have many friends outside the office, I no longer like the "2". I am not looking to be their friend, we are past that point now. I am not insulted that I don't get to go to lunch with them, I am insulted by their immaturity. I find it hard to work where no one respects you or the job your are trying to do. To have every move scrutinized and picked on is difficult. My question is this....do you read the outline of things that I endure and believe I have reason to complain? Do you think this would bother anyone, or do you think I am too sensitive? Thank you, Waiting for you verdict! LOL * 2 hours ago * - 4 days left to answer. Additional Details I should add....when I started with the firm several months ago....the "2" did not like each other, the young lawyer wanted to fire the office assistant. I don't believe they "2" like each other now. I think they have the mentality "we had a good thing going until you came along" attitude. The "2" don't want to be the ones who sat there with no ideas nor do they want to do things differently now. more
