Resolved Question: Could you please help me with my English composition?

Hello! I'm taking CPE2 classes and I've always had problems with compositions... I am trying to improve it, and that's why I'm asking for help. I must use a more appropriate and elaborated vocabulary. As I love british English I thought it would be better to ask you =D The proposal is: You have seen a commercial on your local TV station which appeard during a children's programme. You feel that an advertisement of this type is not suitable for showing on children's TV. Write a letter of complaint to the television company, explaing why you object to it and what you would like them to do about it. It must have 300-350 words. This is my rough draft: Dear Sir, I am writing to complain about the clothes advertisement currently being displayed on the children's TV channel, between one and other cartoon. The advertisement shows a girl, actually a young teenager wearing inappropriate clothes, with a high level of sexual insinuation. I feel that this claim is really irresponsible. For a start, this kind of clothing is unacceptable for a teenager. The advertisers also seem to have forgotten that it is been displayed on a children's TV channel. In my view, this type of advertising only encourages children to act like adults. Furthermore, the advert suggests that in order to be popular girls have to act in a unscrupulous way. I would argue that this can only encourage those children to maintain a kind of a sensual image. The kind of behaviour that you are encouraging is totally destructive, children might lose the best part of their childhood trying to be someone that there are not. Don't you think children's advertisement should encourage them to study, to have healthy habits? May I request that you have this advertisement taken down as soon a possible? While I have no objection to clothes being advertised, I feel strongly that this type if advertisement should not be allowed. I have already written to the company concerned, requesting that they remove this advertisement from their campaign and giving them my reasons in detail. I look forward to hear from you. Yours faithfylly, Amy more

Resolved Question: What is the law regarding a faulty PC game?

I purchased a game from an online shop. The game does not run sufficiently on my PC - not due to me not meeting requirements, but apparently the game isn't compatible with certain graphics drivers which is not advertised anywhere. I only discovered this issue with the game after i activated it, which you have to do to play it. The shop i bought it from said they cannot offer a refund because i activated it, but should go to the company that made the game. As far as i am concerned, my contract is with the shop because i bought the game from them and they took my money. It is there obligation to take it up with the game producers because they have a contract with them to sell the game. What is the law re this? more

Open Question: How to report bad solicitors?

I have been treated abysmally by my Marylebone solicitor. He made a minor mistake initially over the court hearing- which we later won with the respondent being told "you have no defence".He was to repay the £15,000 plus interest as agreed in writing plus costs awarded and legal expenses. . The solicitor gave me no further information until I went to see him three weeks later. He revealed that I would have to begin recovery proceedings. I gave him the instruction to go ahead immediately.. . On calling him for a progress report six weeks later he said he would deal with it when he returned from holiday! After many months he eventually registered a charge on the man's property. I then instructed the solicitor to get the Court's consent to sell. I had to give him this instruction THREE times - without result even though he asked each time for confirmation. Without my consent he granted my debtor (I was out of the country) an interview at my expense, then said there was now no option but to get an Order to Sell. I told him to go ahead without delay. Despite repeated emails he refused to respond for over FOUR MONTHS! He had done nothing! I wrote him a very sharp letter, sending him yet another £3,000. Shortly afterwards I had an email informing me he was leaving the company THE FOLLOWING DAY but giving no name or address. I telephoned the senior partner who assured me he would call me back after the Christmas break. I never heard from him again. Complain? There is nobody to complain TO with any chance of success. All documents were forwarded to the LEGAL COMPLAINTS SERVICE which took six months to complete its report. (This is the only channel for complaining) Their report upheld ALL my complaints and instructed the solicitor to refund half my fees paid. (An almost insulting amount considering the stress andd inconvenience he caused over four years!) However the solicitors refuse to pay. So? The LCS claims it has no power to enforce it findings and closed the file, Consequently one is entitled to ask what is the purpose of HAVING the LCS if it is a toothless tiger? Before brushing me off I was told to seek the funds from the firm's insurers. Even before I wrote they claimed the solicitors were not insured in those areas. As 6 of these were those advertised on the LCS website as being legitimate grounds for complaining of bad service if proven, what WAS the insurance company responsible for? Nothing? Both men are now working away earning fat fees elsewhere totally unaffected by their lack of service and professional integrity.. Another side to the story. Documentation shows clearly NOT. The Law society does NOT deal with complaints. The LCS itself has been fined thousands in the past three years or so for its own unsatisfactory work (which it affects to know nothing about.) In effect the information on solicitors' websites and notepaper that they are regulated by the authorities is palpably untrue. Clearly they can do anything and get away with it. IS THIS NOT CORRUPTION? People in other professions would find themselves in deep trouble if they were proven negligent. And what solicitor would take on one off his own kind in litigation over negligence? more

Voting Question: Why do we have to wait so long to get US tv shows in the UK?

It isnt fair that with all the advertising online and all my American friends going on about it that on Sunday Trueblood season 3 starts in the US. I am wondering why on earth us fans of such shows in the UK have to wait several months for it to be broadcast over here? Is it a legal thing or is it just that british TV companies can't be bothered to keep up to date with TV shows? No wonder people download such programmes on the internet, but now ofcourse we are too afraid to do this for fear of being sued or fined so its a no win situation really isn't it?!! Aside from flying to the US myself to watch it each week I cannot find anyway of watching it, even online it is only available to the US, its not not fair!!! Comments please!!! more

Voting Question: In person or by email to ask a company if they have any work?

I want a new job in admin or office support. I want to try an alternative way of finding a job instead of responding to an advertised position. I want to give my CV and introduce myself to companies and ask them if they have any jobs going (even though they aren’t advertising one). I find this way there will be no other competition and the company will be under less pressure to pick someone. Do I go in person to hand over my CV and letter or do I email my CV and letter? Or does it not make any difference? Thank you more

Voting Question: Offshore banking and Web hosting for UK company - Intelligent contributions only please?

I run a few businesses in the UK, however one of my companies sources and wholesales 'grey market' designerware and footwear from manufacterers mainly in China and Italy to clients across Europe. I run and advertise this business completley online, even though the distribution of grey market products is legal under EU law. I still receive legal threats from brand companies even though the products were manufactered under licence, under my agreements with my suppliers I can not disclose the origin of the goods to brand companies to prove authenticity. Any advice on making this a completely anonymous operation through using an offshore bank account and web hosting. I in no way plan on evading UK taxes however I do not wish to be harrassed by large companies even though I tell them to shove it anyway. Intelligent advice only please, comments are greatly apreciated. more

Resolved Question: UK: Should we buy goods from "celebrity" endorsed products.?

For some time now I have become very cynical of C I P. It seems we must buy whatever they are pushing just because a "Celebrity" is fronting the advertising./marketing. Then Id wondered if the Celebs actually used said endorsed products. It transpired not. il give you a few examples. Quite a few years ago a famous fast food company used a red and white clown to advertise its "meat products" yet he was allegedly a vegetarian. And I think, a British model once linked to the actor Richard Gere was said to use a face pack/moisturiser using honey and rock salt or something similar yet endorsed really expensive cosmetics, Then there is the footballers now wife advertising a "green" budget-supermarket - does she shop there with her millions ? what about the young cocky chef singing the praises of local butchers yet is now " the face of" A well known "orange" supermarket - which brings me on to a recent M&S "veteran model" caught shopping in the same "orange" supermarket - a rival. and finally a comedian with the initials AG once advertising "Identity theft" precautions warnings. Yet Journalists managed to rummage through his rubbish and find complete bank statements bills etc etc all un-shreded - completely at odds with the advert he was fronting. In this case why should we believe what Celebrities advertise. It sounds like they "take the shilling" but that's about it. Its all a farce. more

Resolved Question: impossible to get a job without using agencies nowadays?!?

Hi I am desperately looking for a job and have been on JSA for over 1 month now. Nearly every job on the internet is through an agency. I've applied for everyjob i can find that is advertised by an employer, and as yet have had no reponse. I HATE agencies. I've worked for most of them before (Reed, select, Huntress etc) They just ask what sort of work you want and what you DONT want. They pretend to care, and then they get you a job and LIE to you about what the job entails. When you get to the job, you find that you are doing the thing that you told them you DO NOT want to be doing. Inevitably, you are either useless as this job (hence why you told them beforehand that you didn't want that sort of work) or you hate it too much to carry on. Usually the company let you go and send you back to the agecny so that the stupid cycle can begin again! Not to mention that they take loads of your wage from you. Why do businesses always go through agencies nowadays? it must work out more expensive to use them?? Oh well, gonna have to go registering again next week at the poxy places :( more

Voting Question: Trading under a fictitous name and bank accounts?

I'd like to start trading under a fictitious name. Also known as "Trading as". I have a Nationwide flex account but I'm not sure if they have any feature that allows customers to change names. Anyone knows if it's possible? If not, is there any other way that I can trade (I'm a media composer) under a fictitious name?I mean, have BACS payments made into my account without giving the companies my real name? I'd like to use an artistic name or a company name and my goal is that my real name never appears anywhere. I can't open a business account. Any other ways to go about this? Things like paypal will not work as I'm talking about dealing with big advertising agencies and they pay via Bacs. it's all very professional. I'm young and naive. thanksthx for your answer...but how do artists go about it. mind you, i meant artificial name. i'm going to be meeting people so it's not that i have anything dodgy in mind. i just wanted to be known by my artistic name and keep my real name private.raysor, so only the inland revenue and my bank would know my name? that's what i want. as long as the people i'll be working with only know my artistic name, i'm happy. but how to i go about registering the artistic name ? thx more

Resolved Question: During this depression/recession should television be allowed to advertise more spending?

I know TV companies are a business and so are Tesco's, but does anybody else not think its distasteful to have the current Tesco's advert showing the wife telling the husband to buy the big massive LCD TV, easy chair and loads of booze just for the world cup, and for her to get reward points? Most people who shop in supermarkets can't afford the food they really want never mind a big TV on a whim. Is this not irresponsible of the televsion companies that they never told Tesco that this may be insensitive to most people?Commercial TV companies are duty bound to inform and entertain, all drinks adverts carry warnings about drinking responsibly. Why don't adverts carry warnings about spending sensibly?electricpole: the food you want doesn't have the same dietry recomemedations as the food you need. Resolved Question: Should I stay or should I go? PLEASE HELP?

Last year, I started a permanent job which I accepted because of the recession. (I have already discussed my situation in this forum). I am suffering from many issues such as commuting time (4h), hostile work environment, lack of private life and exercise… Many people in this forum suggested me to look for another job but I simply cannot find one. After 8 months now, I am finding this job interesting. I am in my 30ies Although the company had some problems with processes and management affecting our performance, I had a bad quarter review based on people unprofessional comments about me. I was furious. My manager was not happy and told me that if I wanted to stay he will help me (he never did). I am working very hard to cover my tiredness and my professional frustration. My work performance is slightly doing better. A role has been advertised within the team with interesting responsibilities and money but I am simply too tired to apply. Also I don’t trust my manager as I feel he does not want me here. He knows that I can do better. The problem is now that my life is out of control: I don’t socialize, see my family or friends , cannot have hobbies or simply read a book. Saturdays are spent recovering. I still need to repair my car, I don’t dare to ask for some hours off to see the dentist. It took me ages to repair my bike for example. I don’t know what to do as I need this job. I don’t want to be unemployed again. The company would like me to relocate but the search is not successful. They are not supportive and refused an unpaid leave. No one cares. My situation is funny: when I was unemployed (many times!), I was not happy and had no life due to lack of money. I was dreaming of going on holidays, doing sport competitions or simply treating myself in a spa. Today with this job I feel the same. I feel sad. Tomorrow I don’t want to wake up at 5am I have enough. I am also stressed as I only have 15 days holidays left til december Please help me. Louise more

Resolved Question: Should I worry about a nasty and threatening team member?

I recently accepted a job because of the recession. Since I started I am feeling tired as I spend too much time in buses and trains. Now I am starting to like the job. My level is average and the company promotes a lot. The surprising thing about this company is that I never had an induction, nobody cares for new starters and the business is so messy (systems down, regular business changes…). After having some tensions and conflicts with a few employees (not HR level), I feel horrible when I ask a question about the job I am doing. I have a problem with one of my colleagues, sitting next to me. He is a strong team member and a nasty “snipper” who knows his job and the company very well. He has high standards and people need to be “extremely nice” to approach him. We hardly speak. I confronted him once regarding a nasty comment (she should be sacked) to my new manger. He ran away after the confrontation. I have a strong personality and I don’t accept disrespectful people. Sometimes I say to myself “who does he think he is?” Since I started he has been offensive, made me feel bad in meetings and when I ask him a question about the job. Most of the time, I “fight” with him verbally to make him understand that I am not “on my knees” like the others. He has been there 5 yrs and has a reputation of being excellent. How can I make sure that he won’t be an obstacle to my career progression? I am saying that because we have a new manager who is guided by this employee and they are close? One of the new starters in my team does not like me too because he is professionally dependant of this “snipper” who helps him doing his job. Also there are advertising a good opportunity within the team. It is a shame I am not ready due to tiredness Thanks for answering. Lisa more

However I did some research and they are not even who they say they are on the phone. It ends up being a totally different job than what is advertised. Selling vacuum cleaners door to door and the pay is not even close to what they printed (only if you meet there quotas). I asked directly on the phone if any sales where involved I was flatly told no. So I checked it out and it ends up being nothing they advertise for. Not only does it charge its runners £32 per running place, but it charges charities nearly ten times that, at £300 per place. For those people and charities who have failed to get a place an associated company called Real Buzz cold calls them, offering them an advertising package at £1000-£8400 which, stangely enough include a couple of running places. Whilst there's charities desperate for places, there's 3% up for grabs to the highest bidder. Then there's the question of where the money goes. Only 1/4 of the total funds raised goes to the London Marathon Charitible Trust. The rest goes...elsewhere. For example last year just over 1 million pounds went onto staff resources, but the other £12.4 million went unaccounted for (publicly at least). A lot of the Marathon's resources are provided either free or at a greatly reduced cost, unlike other running events that pay the full price and yet can budget. However there is an undisclosed employee receiving a quarter of a million pound salary, plus local authorities such as Bexley and Camden receiving handouts. Given that this great, nationwide event has the power to close parts of London, takes millions of pounds in public money and has dubious expenses, sure its accounts should be made public.
