Resolved Question: Should I take the job?

I applied for a job in a (very!) small family coffee shop on the Isle of Wight. I chose the coffee shop due to its proximity from my house and it does pay a comparatively better wage than all the other companies in the vicinity. I got a phone call from the manager to say that he wanted to interview me. When I arrived, it turns out that the manager and manageress are only looking for one employee to take over the day to day running of the cafe and they will have little/no responsibility. However I will not be classed as a ,,supervisor/manger''. The wage is £8.50 an hour and I would be responsible for opning and closing the cafe, stock taking, cleaning, cooking, washing, cashing up at the end of the night, making up the float, ordering the supplies and taking and signing for the supplies. Also at the interview the management appeared rude and abrupt and condescended everything I said e.g. ,,why do you want part time?'' and I said ,,because that was the position advertised''.. ,,oh we only want full time, that was a mistake! We always use that sign, someone should change it''. Confused I just sat there and she said ,,so do you still want the full time position?'' and so I said ,,Yes''. I was successful in the interview. Should I take it? Is it worth it? more

Open Question: Will TV manufacturers enable automatic muting of commercials?

The sound volume of TV commercials is significantly greater than regular programming and therefore is very annoying. Apparently it is not enough for broadcast companies to charge us for television access as well as bombard us for 26% of airtime with unsolicited commercials from other sponsors. They also must increase the volumes of their commercials to “shout” at us so that we have to adjust or mute the television each time a program is interrupted. Yes, we live in an advertising-based economy stroking promises or branding the bull. But will advertisers or broadcasters ever figure out that being an annoyance can back-fire? Will a tech-company please invent & include an automatic audio-compensator or automatic mute for us or, better yet, an edit-out till the end (16 minutes per hour are interruptions)? Can the FCC help? Thank you more

Open Question: Why don't the American people demand this health care plan?

This plan is so much better than anything the government has offered. It makes a profit, which would go toward the deficit instead of increasing it, so it's a win-win situation. It's not welfare - people have to pay on a sliding scale. No private insurance companies are involved, so they can't keep killing us. Small business can afford to stay in business or hire more people since they won't have to buy employee insurance. Nobody would have to wait for benefits, so lives would be saved immediately. It's been offered at insurance corruption. com since last summer and widely advertised. The only problem is that the American masses seem to be too stupid to get it. If they were intelligent, they would've demanded it, loudly and continually. more

Resolved Question: Please help!! I need to get into English 10 Honors. English assignment compare and contrast. i give best answe?

Nolan Botz Period.3 TKAM Growing up in the 1930s vs. the 21st century 2/6/10 Is this a good compare and contrast essay for the similaritiesand differences between growing up in the 1930s and the 21st century? While growing up in the 1930s and growing up in the 21st century share many similarities, they also share many differences. Similarities between the two might include how children still like to play the same games that they did in the 1930s continuing to the 21st century. Some games may include hid and seek or checkers. In the 1930s kids liked to play checkers with other kids or their parents. Another game the kids in the 1930s might have played is cards of a type of game that you play with cards such as go fish. In the 21st century many kids still enjoy games that kids played in the 1930s such as hide and go seek outside or inside of their house. Another game that kids in the21st century still admire is scrabble. The kids would play the game with their peers or parents. Although many games are still common in the 21st century from the 1930s, there are many other differences between the two times such as the use of technology. The use of technology is changing at a rapid paste from people thinking every day of how to make the human life easier such as more efficient telephone and video games, which have caused kids growing up at these two times to have an ample effect on them as they grow older. The Telephones in the 1930s was a fairly large console in a building of house with a rotating dial to call people. When people entered to use the telephone to call someone they would have to go to the nearest phone. Kids would be more outside in the 1930s because of the less distractions of the Cell phone for texting or playing games. Video games were not present in the 1930s which also had an effect in kids because they would not be distracted by the pleasure of playing and spend more time outdoors. In the 21st Century however, some kids may have entered a “second life” which is where the kid is on his or her computer all day which can be lead to the addiction of the computer or cell phone. Kids in the 21st century spend much more times indoors then they did in the 21st century because of the distraction. In the 21st century food sizes have changed dramatically. For example, a large fast food burger in the 1930s is smaller than a small fast food burger today. Kids in the 21st century and kids in the1930s growing up with food sizes could change their health status and eating habits for the rest of their life. In the e1930s the fast food of just regular food was mostly from natural foods from the earth. They were a lot healthy stuff kids who ; grew up in the 1930s probably did not eat as much as the kids growing up in the 21st century so those kids who grew up in the 1930s were much less fat than the kids in the 21st Century. In the 21st century food became unhealthier for fast food because it was prossed food some of it of part of the meal has manmade chemicals in it. It was very unhealthy for you. Also when those kids grew up they would have bad eating habits or they would eat too much because of the large advertising for fast food and the large amounts that fast food companies were selling to their buyers. In conclusion growing up as a kid in the 1930s and growing up as a kid in the21st century share many similarities and differences between the two times. Similarities include Games such as hide and seek and some differences include the use of technology such as cell phones and video games, and the differences in food sizes. Growing up in the 1930s and growing up in the 21st century have many similarities with things like games, but when it comes to getting enough exercise, the 21st century destroys that. more

Open Question: Yahoo Homepage... an easy to use tool for consumers or an ad cluttered sellout?

I know that the new Yahoo Homepage has been out for a while, launched last year, but today's homepage takes things to another level selling the wallpaper and allowing an advertisement to invisibly hover over the headlines (which I have seen before). Yahoo is starting to resemble the ad cluttered sellout that is MySpace. In late January Yahoo finally showed its ability to listen to consumer complaints and removed the automatic hovers. However, with advertisements still hovering over the headlines I find the new page highly irritating. This in combination with the new wallpaper and ability of ads to open interactive applications completely blocking the homepage makes me wonder if Yahoo cares more about the advertisers than consumers. I have been a loyal Yahoo users for over 10 years but feel betrayed by the company... with the simplicity, ease of use and (best of all) advertisement free option of Google (and other newcomers like Bing), what is Yahoo thinking? I only see Yahoo's market share slipping if this trend continues. Now that I have vented... I will summarize my questions. 1) Do you think Yahoo is a complete sellout who thinks more of advertising revenue than ensuring ease of use for the average web surfer? 2) Also, if you are sticking with Yahoo no matter what, what is it about Yahoo that makes it so appealing? Am I missing something? 3) And to Carol Bartz specifically and with all do respect, with such a strong professional background and long list of serious accomplishments... I expected more. Have you forgotten about us, the lowly consumer? more

Open Question: How sure are you that your commodities are from halal sources?

This may look lengthly, but it will take you two minutes to read it...Please open your eyes... Many of us point our fingers to Israel and blame them for poverty in the world. We can yell and scream and cry over palestine, but what about Africa, Asia etc.? You know WHY we aren't aware of our damage? Because it's too hard, we don't want to know. Because media rarely advertises it. Just because it isn't popular, it doesn't mean it isn't happening There are so many things that we may be doing that cause the poor to get poorer in other countries: ☞ Farmers in Africa are given poisonous pesticides which can give them cancer amongst other diseases. This is done for the "fresh" fruit and veg we buy from certain supermarkets ☞Women and children are raped in sweatshops. Is it worth it? Certain companies like nike have sweatshops in the poorest countries. The workers have no other choice. Check the lable of your clothes. "Made in India...Pakistan..." --do you seriously think that these people are given fair working conditions? ☞ Jewellery sourced from places like africa are mined by CHILDREN sometimes. Do you know how many diseases those kids could get? Imagine the treatment theyre facing... ☞ Our waste are sent to third world countries. There, women and children are picking and seperating our waste into different categories. This is their daily life. No school, no play...they have to pick out OUR rubbish... ☞ Oil companies have oil spills, gas flaring and pollution. These aren't things to be ignored. It happens. People get diseases and die. They have to get water from places that are sooo far away. http://www.protectthehuman.com/shell (A short video about shell's oil effects) These are just a few of the things that WE cause and contribute to. And you may want to ignore it. WE've become numb because this happens everyday... But we can change....lets become more aware of where our products are going. The Quran says: "You are the best nation that has been raised up for mankind; You enjoin right conduct, forbid evil and believe in Allah. (3:110)" Do have a look into this link: http://www.renaissance.com.pk/Mayviewpoint2y5.htm It's about business... Resolved Question: Should the fire service be run like the US healthcare system?

In the past in the UK, the fire service was a private service. Should it be so again to be more efficient? http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/FireInsuranceAndTheLFEEFullStory.asp "To insure a building, people paid a premium to an insurance company. These companies made a lot of money from the scheme and used it to start their own fire brigades. Firemarks were used to distinguish between, and advertise different insurance offices, and were placed on the outside of an insured building. Brigades would use the firemarks to identify whether a certain building was insured by them. When a building was on fire, several brigades would attend and if they did not see their specific firemark on the building, they would go away and leave it to burn."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhpUG4apgrE more

Open Question: bussiness advertising law issue_I signed an ads contract(4 terms), but was not informed by the sales person.?

I live in NJ and signed a advertising contract with a local company who promised to mail out 10,000 mails to the local area (but definitely not the case, we did not even receive their ads at our residential place which is only 3 blocks from our business) and a much better outcome than her competitive( which definitely not the case either, because I had only 2 response). So I called in to tell her that I want to discontinue the ads, but she said the ads was already printed and I had signed up a 4 terms ads contract (which she did not even mention at all in the beginning when I signed up). So I tried to tell her that I can not pay the full amount because it's just not fair enough( the awful outcome and I was not even informed about the details of the contract). But she was very solid that I had to pay for the full amount because I had signed a contract for it. This week, I got a letter from her lawyer to collect the payment and also threat a 275/hr collection fee may apply later on for collection purpose. I really don't think that is fair enough for me to pay the entire amount. What should I do? more

Open Question: People good with grammar and writing help with this article full of mistakes?

By the way, this essay was not written by me, I just found it on Wikipedia.Try to find as many mistakes as you can and correct them. This will show how well you are at grammar, spelling, etc. I want to see what people think of this! The Super Bowl has been the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the premier association of professional American football, since 1967. In most years, the Super Bowl is the most-watched American television broadcast. Many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event’s pre-game and halftime ceremonies. The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday,[1][2][3] called Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day.[4] Exclusive television broadcast rights for the Super Bowl rotate each year among three of the four major American television networks: CBS, Fox, and NBC. Because of its high viewership, commercial airtime for the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive of the year. Due to the high cost of investing in advertising on the Super Bowl, companies regularly develop their most expensive advertisements for this broadcast. As a result, watching and discussing the broadcast’s commercials has become a significant aspect of the event. The Super Bowl was first played on January 15, 1967, as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and a rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues’ champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game, until the merger was consummated. After the merger of the two leagues in 1970, each league became a "conference", and the game was played between conference champions. Lamar Hunt, former owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and founding member of the American Football League, coined the name Super Bowl after watching his children playing with a Super Ball. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. Super Bowl I was played in 1967 to determine the championship of the regular season played in 1966, and Super Bowl XLIV, on February 7, 2010, will be played to determine the champion of the 2009 regular season. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, while the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have each won five. Seventeen other NFL franchises have won at least one Super Bowl. Only four active NFL franchises have not appeared in the Super Bowl. They are the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. The Lions are the only NFC team yet to play in one, the other three are in the AFC. The Browns and Lions have both won NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era, while the Jaguars (who joined the NFL in 1995) and Texans (2002) joined the league after the Super Bowl era began. more

Open Question: Best Way To Advertise For A Small Business?

I am going to be starting a computer repair company hopefully within the next couple of months. My question is, what is the best way to get the word out there? I defiantly want to hit the ground running on all fronts, both offline and online, but I don't know where I should invest the most time and money. I was thinking about phone books and newspapers for offline, and ads on Google, and Craigslist for online. Do remember this is a computer repair business so many people may not have the ability to get online. Any advice provided would be greatly appreciated. more

Open Question: How long to wait before reapplying to a company?

About 5 months ago I had an interview at a fairly large company (500+ people) and didn't get the job. However now they are advertising for a different position and I am wondering would it be too crass to apply for this? This position unlike the last one I applied for is a lot closer to my speciality and therefore I feel I would be a relatively good fit for this position (this is beginning to sound like a generic coverletter). more

Open Question: I am owed money at job but am quitting?

I am in advertising sales and am commission only. If my customers pay in full I get full commission; however, if they make monthly payments I get paid my portion of commission with each payment. Payments are spread out over a 6 month period. Two questions: 1. If I quit am I still entitled to my commission I earned but is still held up in monthly payments or do I forfeit it? 2. Some of my customers haven't paid their monthly payments since Nov and my company has done nothing to attempt further collection. That being said, I was supposed to get quite a bit of money by this point but since they haven't paid I haven't received commission. If they don't pay do I not get paid? I am not the one who handles payments so I can't do anything to make them pay. more

Open Question: Paint Contractor who did a screwed up job painting my house is suing me?

In his written proposal he was to remove ALL "Tex Coat on soffits". Less than 1% was remove and now painted over with multiple coats of paint. I gave him the opportunity to fix it be he did not. After a heated discussion he and his crew walked off the job unfinished. I contacted the Franchiser and the referral service with my complaint. They tried to help the contractor and I come to an agreement but as of now, they say I should pay him because he improved the value of my house. To correct his screw up it will cost almost double to have another painter fix it and possible sand blasting which is very expensive. Now I am being threatened with a civil law suit for non payment. My detective work has uncovered that this company advertise on their PROPOSAL "Workman's Compensation Insurance" but I checked with the Cal. State Contractor's Board and show him exempt. I don't want to hassle this in court and I don't want to pay twice and excessively more. In general, ALL of the prep work, scraping, sanding, repair/fix window glaze was not done. This painter damaged my house and now he going to sue me? What should I do? more

Open Question: Ideal Recruitment Solutions?

Hi, I just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with this company, I have seen the advertise on CareerJet.com for Data Entry Jobs. However I don't like the idea of handing over £10 to them, and there's no real proof that there would be actual work once payment is made. Has anyone applied for this position and got work, or is it the scam that I think it is. If possible I just want to hear from anyone who has paid them the £10, I know alot of people will want to say it is a con/scam but I'm looking for a bit of proof either way. Thanks more

Open Question: Rent Agreement (No Contract)?

Hi, A friend of mine has fallen into a rent scam and she's been asking advice which I couldn't really help out with. I feel really sorry for her and want to do my best to help out and thought of turning to everyone here for advice and guidance. 6 months ago my friend moved into this house which was advertised privately on the web. The rent conditions were 6 months council tax exempt (landlord to pay) and utilities included which she thought was a bargain although the monthly rent was slightly high compared to the condition of the house. No contract was provided and her landlord emphasised 'trust' rather then legally binding each other. I agree this was a stupid mistake and she took things for granted. 6 months has passed now and the landlord is surprisingly demanding she pays the outstanding (!?) council tax and utilities and verbally abuses and threatens her at least 2 times a day! She has argued plenty of times of the terms and conditions of the agreement but the landlord is in complete denial. Out of desperation she contacted the website where the ad was placed however the company said they were unable to retrieve deleted ads. Can someone please help? My friend has a very gentle soul and right now she's traumatised from the experience she's going through.. I send my sincere appreciations for reading this. more

Open Question: What is the Dependent and Independent Variables? Part 2?

A drug company is advertising a new drug that helps people recover from jet lag faster. You are skeptical so you conduct an experiment to test their claim. In your experiment, 100 people are flown from San Francisco to Tokyo. During the flight, half the participants are given the drug company's new drug. The other half of the participants are given a placebo (i.e. sugar pill) during the flight. Six hours after they land, all participants are asked to rate how sleepy and disoriented they are. Can someone tell me what the dependent and independent variable(s) are? Thank you more

Open Question: Is there anything I can do about feeling discriminated against while apartment hunting?

My husband and I have been looking at an apartment to rent. The advertisement posted the rent as $695, and $100 off the deposit if we could move in by a certain date. We were the first to turn in our application, and were told by the real estate company that we would get the apartment, they just had to wait for our paperwork to go through. We were then told that the $100 off the deposit would not be applicable anymore, because there were so many inquiries. Everything came back well, and we kept being told that they were just waiting on some paper work. We told our current land lords that we would be moving, and so they began showing our apartment. We started packing and making arrangements, and today my husband received a phone call from the real estate company asking us if we would be willing to pay more because there was another couple interested in it. Basically, it was like the apartment was up for bid, which was a contradiction to what the price it was advertised as. Earlier in the day, before that phone call, the agent called us and said he was going to email a contract for us to look over. We feel like we have been promised something, and then now we are getting nothing. Although nothing was yet in writing, we feel that this is unfair. We live in Utah. Is there anything we can do about this situation? more
