moreOpen Question: Which studies and work experiences should I put on my CV?
I major in Performing Arts Communication, which is really 80% business communication management and 20% stagework. I'm in my final year of college, but at 25 am slightly older than most of my classmates. Within the next three months I need to find an internship, but since I'm not counting on my stagework subjects, I'm planning to find experience in other communication fields.
It's not that I've never worked before, but most of the times I've applied for jobs I've found that most of the experience I put on my CV has gotten me into trouble more than helped me. So I've decided to trim my CV and mention only "relevant" ones, but I need some help here.
I'm planning to apply to several companies, including PR-Advertising companies, media consultancies, news TV stations, magazines, newspapers, and embassies.
Here are some of my schooling experiences:
- The one I'm doing now: Performing Arts Communication in Indonesia, graduating next year. Not crazy about its quality or its future prospects, but at least my campus has a strong brand reputation.
- 1 year of Advertising in The Netherlands (2004-2005). Great program much better than my current one, but didn't finish.
- 1 year of Marketing-Management in the US (2002), but it was an unaccredited religious college.
And my complete list of work experiences:
- Freelanced on and off as a translator, interpreter, MC, and event organizing.
- Tried to start an event management business with friends, supported by a senior couple who are alraedy operating several businesses of our own. We produced one event and tried to continue, but failed. I wasn't paid a penny for this, but I was working 9-5 Monday to Friday and treated it as I would a job, so I think I still learnt a lot of things that could be valuable in the workplace.
- Did 10 episodes of a journalistic radio talk show as a means of strengthening the brand of an independent newspaper some professional acquaintances started. The newspaper went out of business, though :-(
- Multilevel marketing, between 2004-2006. Hardly anything to show for it now, but it helped me handle objections professionally, develop emotional stability, learn how to sell stuff, and it was arguably the first place where I learnt comprehensive branding strategies. If I had known the pitfalls of the industry I probably would have not chosen this job, but it left a significant mark on me in terms of building my character for the better.
- I sometimes list "multimedia personnel" for this organization (which I tend to refrain from telling employers that it's really my church), in which I worked together with these contemporary Christian recording artists in producing multimedia, written work, and event management.
Other than that, I've taken several short courses in journalism and TV presenting.
I've been told by some that mentioning all the qualifications here above can be intimidating for an HR recruiter, especially that I'm not even a fresh graduate yet. But at the same time, I'm also afraid that if I don't mention them, I might fail to compete with younger candidates who seem to have a lot more to offer than I do. A prospective employer over an interview once told me that I'm the type who knows what I want, but unfortunately does not have what it takes to get it in this competitive career climate of Jakarta, where preference is given to the young and obedient instead of intelligent risk takers like me (especially that I'm older but have not been able to show "commitment").
Anyway, in order to get a great internship ASAP, which studies and work experiences should be on my CV? It would be great if you could also help me differentiate how to write different versions of my CV when writing to different company types.
Thank you :-)

moreResolved Question: LED HD 22" TV - shocking sound quality ........?
I bought the above described TV from a worldwide reputable company (Grundig). The picture quality is fantastic but the sound is - to put it crudely - CRAP!
It sounds like a 1960's transistor radio. There is minimal volume even when up full-bore!
There was no mention in the advertising blurb that the unit would need additional sound equipment - shouldn't ALL television sets have sound quality that is not 'c p'!
I bought it because of the brand - knowing their sound equipment is among the very best. I am disappointed to say the least - and because I have tinnitus it even hurts to listen to it for more than half an hour. What am I supposed to do? Please?
moreResolved Question: New business or my current well-paying job with a bright future?
Little Bio about myself: I am 28yrs old guy living in San Francisco. During my first year at undergrad school, I found out that I was interested in Multimedia and Design. I took it up as a hobby and continued with my degree and finally graduated with a computer science diploma after four years. But by that time, I had unconsciously made-up my mind that I wanted to work in visual effects industry for Hollywood movies (It sounded impossible to me because I was sitting in a third world country thousand of miles away with no clue about the Effects business). But I guess my motivation paid off and a year later I moved to US to study at a design college for MFA in visual effects and computer graphics. I had to work really hard for a year to develop a design portfolio to get into this school. But quite soon I found out that I am not the smartest kid among a huge group of people at my school, all of them wanted exactly the same thing - to get into the five best effects companies in the world. After I graduated, I started applying to these companies with no money and no contacts. From here onwards I left it completely on luck and to some extent God. So it happened, I ended up getting a job at a company that seemed impossible to get into and only a handful fresh graduates make it there. I am talking about a very famous vfx company which probably shaped american pop culture through some of its iconic movie characters from 80's and 90's. I needed a visa and money to move to san francisco, and I still feel lost at words sometimes how everything fell into place because that's what I wanted and someone somewhere was listening. So here I was two and half years after I decided to work for 'hollywood' movies actually 'doing' it.
Now coming back to my question. Although I absolutely love my job and literally everything about it (I have zero complaints) but for the past month or so, I have started to feel this emptiness growing inside me. I won't lie if I say money is a factor in this whole saga, but I have started to feel that I need to do something bigger. Just the thought of starting my own business makes me smile. Some people might argue that's a tough thing and very few people succeed but basing on my previous experience, I think everything is possible. Motivation, determination and hardwork is the key. And offcourse being a little smart about decision you take in life (which some people call calculated risks)
I usually meet a lot of successful people at my company as well as guests who come to speak here. People who have won oscars/baftas/and grammys, contributed something to this world and made a name for themselves. It makes me even more eager about doing something for myself but at the same time I feel that my thoughts are all over the place. I only have about roughly two years of experience here, but since I am 28 already - I want to do something before I turn thirty. That gives me only two years. I don't want to leave my job for few years (until I see something is shaping up) but this idea (of doing something for me) is very contagious as Nolan puts it in inception :).
I am really passionate about movies and CG. And I also have really keen interest in brands and advertising. But, I am having a hard time to come up with an idea that converges all of my interests at a single place. This whole dream that I am dreaming is very new to me, so may be I need some more time to think about it.. so there you have it, i dont know if it's a question that I am asking here, I am probably just thinking loud. But what would you do in this scenario. You think I am being bit unreasonable for thinking about start-up so soon, when I am practically not even a US citizen yet. Do you have any ideas I can brainstorm with. I am almost convinced america is a land to make your dreams come true - and I want to give it a try.
Thanks for any input!
moreResolved Question: I was wondering...(involving hair)?
So, I've tried all kinds of shampoos and conditioners.
I've even mixed brands (even though they say not to. I just wanted to see the results. Some were pretty good!) And it got me thinking...
Hair-care commercials advertise their products with lure-words like:
"Shiny", "Strong", "Smooth" and they talk about repairing splits in the strands, volume, and maintaining dyed colour. Sometimes, they say 'healthy'... but what does healthy entail to them? Probably just strong, smooth, shiny and so on...
I was wondering... just how HEALTHY and CLEAN is my hair? Do these products actually give it health and true cleanliness? Or are they just coating it with chemicals that give it appealing qualities? Is my hair actually being uncontaminated from all kinds of unsanitary things that I had to face between washings?
Are there products NOT made for nice texture or volume, but just for basically sterilizing my hair?
I was just wondering. I mean almost all shampoos are scented, and on the back they don't really say anything but 'cleanse yourself in the ocean breeze scent, feel energized and invigorated' which doesn't give me much. Their ads never really say "your hair will be sanitary, and truly in better health."
So, isn't there the 'non-scented soap' version of shampoos/conditioners out there? Thanks in advance for anything that you share, and for reading!

I have a Sony external flash unit. (It wasn't advertised as part of the alpha line, but it does have the symbol). I also have a nikon d300s. moreResolved Question: Whay are Indian actors so keen to shoot in ads for cheap consumer goods?
We all know it's all about the money. But nevertheless the top paid Bollywood actors have amassed colossal fortunes having played their roles in countless movies. You'd think some reserve, modesty, pride and ego should be kicking in as a restraint. But no, from cookies to cars they accept anything you throw at them. It is true that major Western stars can be sponsoring brands such as Pepsi or Nike. But they stick to that (representing one brand). You don't see De Niro, Al Pacino, Tom Cruise etc... advertising toothpaste or Maggi soup compared to their Indian counterparts.

moreOpen Question: How much difference does the brand or type of golf ball really make?
Me and my friend Dave have just begun playing golf this summer. I believe there is little difference between LEGAL (according to what is legal by USGA guidelines) golf balls. I think when they start advertising balls that correct slice or increase distance, the correction is minimal and greatly exaggerated to make more sales. If there was an substantial difference such balls would be made illegal.
However Dave believes they make a big difference. He has a really bad slicing problem and believes getting one of those "anti-slice" balls they sell at like Wal Mart will eliminate that slice. I say he's dreaming and should start learning how to hit the ball correctly.

So I gave in when this printer first came out and purchased it. I've been having problems printing pictures the past few months. I have brand new ink and the papers i'm printing that have color aren't vibrant. they're dull and sometimes it doesn't print too well at all. I can forget about printing pictures, because it screws up the color of the photo. I end up getting a grey blue photo. What can I do to fix this? Is there a setting? It spools itself every time I power it up after it's been unplugged. I'm really disappointed with this printer. My old hp printer, which was a dinosaur, printed pictures and printed pages with color so well & the only time I had issues with it is when it was low on ink. It was small and reliable. I'm regretting giving it to my brother very much now all those months ago. This kodak esp 3 is a beast and it's noisy. it sucks! I bought this to print great quality photos like it says and print papers fast and not have to worry about tinkering with it to try to get it to re-spool just to come out a little darker. Does anyone know how to make this hunk a junk work the way it's advertised??
moreResolved Question: Free TV's, Computers, Ipods, Xbox 360's and much more!?
Hi!
Id really appreciate it if anyone would help me to gain more referrals for freebiejeebies!
Its an advertising site where once youve completed the three steps they send you a free item, such as an iphone or ipad! the item you choose will require you to get a certain number of referrals depending on the value of it. for example an ipod touch 8gb requires 8 referrals.
to sign up please use the following link:
http://gifts.freebiejeebies.co.uk/261801
ive put some more information about it below from my experience and from the actual website:
HOW IT WORKS:
1. All you need to do is sign up (you only give details of age, email, name and address - so product can be delivered to you).
2. And then you simply complete an offer from the list shown after signing in, the most popular is Lovefilm.com as you only need to do a free trial and you can cancel before it ends so you do not pay a penny. (You do not have to do an offer from the link given on freebiejeebies, you can open a new web page and it will still work.)
3. Once you have completed an offer, you then have to refer friends to do the same. Once your friends have also done the 3 same steps as you, you will be given your free gift.
*** I have done the offer myself and got an Ipod shuffle - It definately works! I didnt trust it at first, but after looking around and hearing from others it works i decided to give it a go. You do NOT need to give them any credit card details as the gift is FREE and you do NOT recieve any spam. Freebiejeebies recieve their products brand new in original packaging.
Support from the website:
Is this real?
It most certainly is. It's an advertising scheme to get more people looking at some of the offers which we are affiliated with. Basically, when a user completes one of the offers on our site (e.g. LOVEFiLM) we get paid by the advertiser. This way, we can cover the cost of your free gift and still make a small profit.
A lot of TV programmes and magazines have featured this sort of advertising, including BBC and the Wired magazine - so you can feel confident that it is genuine.
For more proof please visit eXceem, which is a forum dedicated to the UK's Freebie Scene - www.exceem.co.uk

eXceem also has a thread called 'I got my free item' where people post pictures of the items they have received. eXceem members often post to show gifts they have received from us (many eXceem members call us 'FJ') - http://www.exceem.co.uk/forums/i-got-my-free-item/.

Can't complete an offer?
Sometimes you might find that you are unable to complete one of the offers available through the links on our site (for instance, if you do not have a credit card or if you have already completed the offers that you would like to do).
You can still get a gift from any of the freebiejeebies sites. All you need to do is obtain 3 extra referrals in addition to the number required for your chosen gift. moreResolved Question: Getting a refund. What are my rights.?
Hello
Hoping someone can maybe help me out with my situation.
I had purchased a product from Game Spot, a Nyko Charge Base IC for the Nintendo Wii and was extremely unsatisfied. This product is advertised to hold a charge for 10 hours of gameplay on a full charge, but in only 30 minutes of use the battery had already dropped a single bar.
Also when purchasing this product from Game Spot, I was told it was brand new, but when checking my receipt to see the return policy, it said it was “pre-played” meaning used.
I feel that I didn’t not get the product I wanted and asked for a refund. They told me they do not give refunds only store credit or an exchange. But on the receipt it only says they do not give refunds on “open software or systems” nothing else is said. The product I purchased is neither “software” or a “system” so I believe I should be issued a refund, especially since I purchased the product under the assumption it was new, when in fact it was pre-owned.
Thanks for any help.scott b:
The policy on the receipt says “no refunds on software or systems” and nothing else. So to me that is the policy. And my item does not fall under either “software” or “systems”
Vern86:
A “System” would be a videogame console. What I purchased was an accessory that charges batteries and can charge other USB devises. It is not part of the “System”
And yes it was a full charge.
moreResolved Question: What Brand/Type of Printer Should I Buy that is Decent for Home Use and Economical!?
I see many types of printers now that are advertising cheap ink. In ten years I've had several printers, but only two brands, HP and Lexmark. I have a Lexmark now which is a fax machine and scanner also, and I like it, but I have found that Lexmark basically wants to suck every dollar I have buying cartridges and if you chance to refill one, the printer will plague you to words that would make a cultist blush.
I use my printer at home. Occasionally (more now than in the past though), I print pictures, because all of the stores require permission letters for anything that resembles a studio portrait, but I'm not that into portrait printing.
I print a lot of documents and I'm sick, I mean sick of worrying and paying out the wazzu for print cartridges. I'm willing to spend a little more for the printer if I can indeed buy cartridges, whether color or black, without breaking the bank. I do need an all-in-one though, with a fax.
Anyone with any experience with the Kodaks are the others that have genuinely cheap refills with decent quality, please give me some advice.

Okay, you're an advertising agent, and you need to make an ad to sell something, the catch is the only song you have access to, is the one you're currently listening to.
So what product (be it a real life brand, or something you've just come up with that will make you millions) would you use to sell your product?

MQ: Favourite song about breaking up/divorce?
MQ2: Favourite old school Diva singer?
MQ3: Favourite Dusty Springfield song?Mark: You had a perfect grasp of the question...

moreResolved Question: What is an affordable website for men's clothing like H&M and Express?
I HATE having name brands across my clothing (unless they want to pay me to advertise) so I love H&M but I want more options than one store (which doesn't even have online shopping in the US). Ladies have TONS of great sites to choose from like Go Jane, Great Glam and so on but I can't find anywhere with good clothing for men. I want nice styles but don;t want to pay 3x the price just to have NAME BRAND written across it.
Please don't suggest something like Hollister because that is exactly what I DON'T want. Any suggestions?

No matter what brand I try, or how little I use, my hair wax always ends up weighing my hair down and I can never get it spiked up how I want it. Is there a certain method for applying it to keep my hair up? (I don't have long hair either, it is only about 3 inches at it's longest points).
(Also ignore any responses advertising websites and not addressing my problem, as they are most definately not helpful )
moreResolved Question: Am I allowed to use another brands logo in an marketing piece for my own company?
I am making a direct mail marketing package to advertise my business, and I want to use another brands logo on the cover of it. I won't be insulting or putting down the name of the other brand, I will just be using it to help illustrate the point of the direct mailer.
Does anyone know if I am allowed to do this without getting permission from them, or is it breaking copyright laws?
I am in South Africa, so British/European laws are similar to ours here, not really US laws.
Any info is appreciated, thanks

moreResolved Question: Advertising a new position?
I would like to know if you can only advertise a new job role internally or if it is the law that you have to advertise it externally too.
The company i work for is only advertising a brand new role internally and ,hilleriously (and unknown to everyone else in the business!), it has already been offered to someone! They are continuing to go through the motions of getting people to apply for it anyway but no one else will obviiously get it as its already been given to someone!
Is this illegal?I think Piggiepants missed the point! The postion has been offered before the job has been advertised so employees are being falsely given the choice to go for it even though they have no hope in getting it!

Just looking for some information on this. I understand many of the gas stations out there are not actually owned by the advertised brand of the store, but by franchisees. If anything like other franchises (think McDonald's) surely there are MANY stores to an owner.

moreResolved Question: Clothing help please? I'm sick of brands and labels?
I'm a 23 year old male that's had a lot of trouble buying clothes lately. I don't want to dress in clothes that advertise a brand I care nothing about. I would like more plain clothes. See, I used to skate and would wear skate brand shirts. Besides a couple sports type shirts like Adidas, the skate shirts are all I really have. Since I don't skate anymore I don't really want to wear the skate shirts. I kind of like the indie style of dress. However, I'm not looking to buy clothes to fit a certain label. I just want a nice plain casual look. Any ideas?

I have always been interested in modeling although i have never done it before due to school, extra curricular activities, and simply not being able to find a legit agent. My goal and dream is to be a Victoria's Secret Angel because they're not shy and they are amazing role models. I want to have that kind of fame and opportunity to advertise such an amazing and well-known brand. I look up to Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, and Miranda Kerr(all Angels). So my question is: what do i need to do to get there? Im not a super skinny girl. Im only 15 and 5' 4" so i still have room to grow and get taller. moreResolved Question: Help finding an American Football commercial that was on TV?
I forgot what brand it was advertising. But here is a description of how it went.
It's basically a football player (I don't know who) in current times, who is playing against a team comprised of players from the past, wearing old school helmets and clothes, as if from the 50's (I think they were in black and white). He tackles through many of them, but then he is suddenly tackled by one of the 'Old' players. And then they help each other up.
Something like that.
any Youtube links would be appreciated!

I bought a brand new xbox from dick smith yesterday, set it up at home but it turns out that there was already a profile called "chook 1" on it with multiple save games already on it. Also it has other games I don't actually have installed on it already. My biggest concern is that it was advertised as 120 GB but it only has 92.2 GB left on it. All I have put on it is cod mw2 and halo 3 (installed and 1 save game each to go with them). So anyway, is my xbox actually brand new? Should I go complain to dick smith? And should I delete the other profile if it does come with all xbox's?
moreResolved Question: Truth in Dog Food Advertising....or not?
Ever notice how when a dog food brand sets up a "compare your dog food to ours" "challenge" on their websites ... the only choices are inferior foods that aren't even the brands' peers?
I just noticed the Blue Buff challenge. For a brand that positions itself as a premium dog food -they're comparing themselves only against the Benefuls and Bill-Jacs of the world, not against a single one of their peers/competitors.
Most disingenuous of all is that they include two Nutro lines - but not Nutro's Ultra line - which would compare favorably to Blue.
I have nuthin against Blue's food - they're just one example of marketing that tries to play you for a fool. Iams does it too.
LEGIT: what dog food marketing hype bugs you?Aphro - it is amusing watching you trip over yourself trying to refute my posts, to the point of taking nonsensical positions. Keep up the good work.Ava - good insight, about Blue Buff using their 'challenge' tool to get the users of the targeted foods to upgrade.
They're not about picking a fair fight ... but in marketing that's not the point.
I think you're right - they're looking to steal market share, and since they can't steal it from the Orijens, Wellness of the world on quality OR price - where else do you look?
It still irks me: "take the challenge" ... is it really a challenge? Or is it a stacked game?

moreResolved Question: Have I broken any laws?
I bought a item from Amazon marketplace, after a week I contacted the seller who told me she had been out of the country and had no internet access plus her supplier did not have the all the items in stock, one had gone out but the other would be later in the week. I was annoyed by this as Amazon rules say the article has to be in stock if advertised and has to be posted with in two days of ordering.
I canceled one item and let the seller know I was unhappy and annoyed, she refund the one items money.
Then 5 days later the package came and it was not from her but love-film, and she had made a 10 euro profit plus love-film deliver for free.
I was very angry and let her know I felt ripped off, she said she was not going to refund me the money and "Business was business".
I contacted both Amazon and Love-film only to find out it was quite "Legal".
So I kept the item only to find out it would not play, so I contacted love-film told them I would return the item and the seller could keep all the money and not send other item.
A month later the brand new item was returned. I was really MAD, I asked love-film but they said the seller was there client and they had to do as the seller asked.
I told love-film that I would return the item again, to tell their client she could keep the money and NOT to return it again ever.
Then we discovered the seller had used two different name, one with me, one with the internetshop. Now they are going to look it.
I have I broken any laws? I spent 30 pounds returning the items twice and told both Amazon and love-film the seller can keep the money I just want this nightmare over and to be left alone.
I bought the item from someone else so no longer need the item. The only person out of pocket is me.
Can the seller take me to court? Have I broken any laws.I know my problem may not be with the internet shop but the seller.
I have give her 30 pounds the first time and the seller will be refund other 20.
I have lost over 60 with phone calls and postage.
Do I still have to worry what the seller could do?
I have all the sellers E-mails.
I have closed down my account with Amazon but still have there E-mails.lovefilm say they are ONLY a shop and not a business suppiler, they know it happens and can not do anything about it, but they are interested in the seller using two names.
They will refund the seller as soon as the item arrives.
I am annoyed because I could of ordered the item from them but they had a 2 week delay, Amazon was out of stock and the sellers page said she would post with in 24 hours, I took it she was a "Shop".
I have the right to complain if I think I have been taken advantage of, it is after all a human right.
I only asked the seller for the postage back as the company deliver for free, thats all I asked for.The item was over a week late before the seller contact me saying she was out of the country, I would have had to wait a further week before the second part went out THEN 5 more days for it to arrive. Amazon rules says you can only advertise a item IF you have it in stock and you have two days to send it out. The seller has no stock becuase they are just ordering from a internet shop who then deliver for free, the delay was the fact the internet shop the seler got it from WAS OUT OF STOCK!
Thats not my fault and I have the right to cancel, the seller should of also offered me the postage back for the inconvinces caused which is normal practise on Amazon Marketplace. The problem today is people no longer care about customer relations just the money.
I ran a Video /Cd business in Soho and always kept my customers happy.
If they had a problem we sorted it out, I NEVER said tough business is business.
