Open Question: Have I done something wrong?...being taken to employment tribunal.?

am single parent to disabled child who gets funding to employ tutors to work with my son at home and school. This has been going well for 2 years. I advertised for tutor part time, self emploed making clear it was 2 month probation period before Xmas. I employed someone from the school my son attends part time thinking they would be suitable....three weeks into training (34.5hrs/50hrs training) I assessed her to be unsafe i.e letting my son play with electrical sockets without stopping him/ not doing therapy as being taught; 90% incorrect then contridicting tutor whom was training her (did it to me days earlier when training her). Asked for reference from her when she applied for job and a few times up until she started the position. She eventually gave me reference two weeks into post (7 weeks after I interview her asking for reference ...the reference confirmed her 'danger' around children! She said she taught english to foreign students but could not write simple instructions for my son to follow, do phonics, teach writing skills and not say words including his name (my son has severe communication and speech impairment)She was also a bit off with him when he did not respond, pushed him to chair instead of direct him and screamed at me and refused to leave for an hour when I dismissed her (in my home my son started to cry and she pushed him out of way and slam door behind her.....my son follows his tutors to the door to wave bye and nearly had his hand injured by the sheer force she slammed door). I had no choice but to dismiss her as she believed sitting child down to explain danger was enough(she said she worked with this disability for many years and was experienced)...my son has no danger awareness due to disability needs to be stopped immediately from something not sat down after he has touched electrical sockets etc... The reference was from the HT from the school. She said the HT didnt like her. I explained with or without reference that I was very concerned and I would have had to let her go and the reference only confirmed my fears (I did not tell her what HT said over phone). She emailed me next day accussing me of ruining her life etc...and she was out to get HT very angry with her. Anyway had letter today at school she is taking myself and school to employment tribunal for racism ( I employed a greek man and american woman before her she is spanish) and wants job back and compensation. I am unemployed carer to my son and have a new tutor now...plus I would not want someone to be with my son who is aggressive, cant teach/speak/spell english to a level he can understand (age 5) and wont stop him from injuring himself. She also is saying I used reference as 'an exuse' to get rid of her as I didn't like her and the reference was not bad (it was,but would have had to let her go due to her way in dealing with my son and not able to teach him anything as was not doing anything we taught her and only had two more days to make 50hrs or training she should have been ready to work alone, but no where near any level in any skill trainined) and she denies I told her it was two month probation period (I told her infront of other tutor which all tutors get). What do I need to do..I have a form to fill in for tribunal that is due back in 3.5 weeks. i have enough stress with caring/managing staff/professionals/appointments/therapy… work to catch up etc for my son without this! feel scared....what have I done wrong? Resolved Question: Does this testimony make you re-consider?

It hails from a slower-moving age but the experiences are just as valid don't you think? "I was born and raised in the Blue Mountains of NSW (Australia) where I frew up on the family farm. From about 6 years of age, I had a deep awareness of God and a desire to follow him. On our farm my grandparents had built a church and I took it upon myself to keep it clean, get rid of the mice that his in the organ and so on! I attended as many services as I could (It was a Church of England). As I grew up I was never quite satisfied with the Church. I cvould see form the bible that God's children enjoyed a lot more closeness to him than I did. So, after 30 years, I joined the Mission arm of the C of E believing this would bring me closer to him. I became a full-time church worker for 5 years in the Kimberleys of WA. Here I was a missionary - supposedly telling others how to find God - and yet I still did not feel any closer to him myself! We left there and ended up in Geraldton. I decided to leave the C of E. The Salvation Army seemed pretty active to I joined them. I was very busy in their "outreach" but, again, after 10 years of this I was left feeling disillusioned. When we moved down to Mandurah I was 63 and decided to give up looking for God in the churches. God would have to find me. After 12 months of just praying at home and reading my Bible, someone from the Revival Fellowship put a leaflet in my letterbox. I went to the advertised meeting and was amazed to hear for the first time such a simple salvation message: repent, be baptised and receive the Holy Spirit". It seemed too easy but I was baptised soon after. I prayed for about 3 months (I must have said a million Hallelujahs!) until finally I was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. It was something that you can't explain to someone that hasn't experienced it. It was pure peace and joy." Praise the Lord more

Resolved Question: Whats the best way to raise funds for a Walk-A-Thon?

I decided that I was going to give back to the community to help raise awareness and assist with research for AIDS/HIV in the area which I live. The problem is part of the requirement is raising charitable donations. The facts: I suck at raising funds and I get angry when I have made attempts in the past and nobody has bothered. I have advertised this on my Facebook and the downside is, donations are only being accepted online through the website. The truth is most people have either a credit or a debit card, so what are some suggestions of things I can do to help raise money for my team? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Does it worry you that Census 2010 has already wasted millions?? ($300 paychecks for doing nothing)?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100216/ap_on_bi_ge/us_census_spending_waste;_ylt=AoQfSs4qtfrOt2.aKWPq_4ep_aF4;_ylu=X3oDMTNkMHZsdHAxBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwMjE2L3VzX2NlbnN1c19zcGVuZGluZ193YXN0ZQRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzYEcG9zAzYEc2VjA3luX3RvcF9zdG9yaWVzBHNsawNhdWRpdGZpbmRzdXM- WASHINGTON – The Census Bureau wasted millions of dollars in preparation for its 2010 population count, including thousands of temporary employees who picked up $300 checks without performing work and others who overbilled for travel costs. Federal investigators caution the excessive charges could multiply once the $15 billion headcount begins in earnest next month unless the agency imposes tighter spending controls, according to excerpts of a forthcoming audit obtained by The Associated Press. On a positive note, investigators backed the Census Bureau's decision to spend $133 million on its advertising campaign, saying it was appropriate to boost public awareness. The spending included a $2.5 million Super Bowl spot that some Republicans had criticized as wasteful. The findings by Todd Zinser, the Commerce Department's inspector general, highlight the difficult balancing act for the Census Bureau as it takes on the Herculean task of manually counting the nation's 300 million residents amid a backdrop of record levels of government debt.neocons..............So I assume you supported Obama's push to put the Census under control of the White House instead of the commerce dept??? Since this has NO political implications whatsoever (sarcasm)mlee..........."I can't believe you'd suggest the USA stop keeping census records? Really?" No. I didn't "suggest" we stop keeping census records. I ask if it worried you that the govt. (BEFORE EVEN STARTING) has ALREADY wasted millions of dollars. This does not set a good precedent for the remainder of the Census. more

Resolved Question: Are black people at a lower risk of skin cancer than white people? - Two very conflicting opinions...?

Sorry if this gets a bit long-winded, but I really find this quite shocking: I have here the top google hit for asking the question: 'Are black people at a lower risk of skin cancer?' It also happens to be Cancer Research UK's Website - Cancerhelp.org. The link is to their 'Risks and Causes' page, the one that flagged up as the first google hit for the above question. Their only reference to black people is under the 'Who is most at risk' section and even then only in one sentence in one paragraph! This seems to be a fairly comprehensive page, covering everything from age, family history and other ilnesses, to chemicals, smoking and radiation exposure! - Each of which has their own section! The worst has yet to come... The single sentence that refers to black people on the 'Risks and Causes' page of Cancer Research UK's website (one of, if not THE top cancer charity/research organisation in the UK) is: "Black skinned people are less likely to get skin cancer, but they can be at risk on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands." I was shocked (to say the least) at reading this, bearing in mind where I had read it and the fact that I had been looking for a sensible and informative answer. I guess you could pull from it that black people are at less risk of skin cancer and from reading the rest of the page you could probably work out why, but if you were to take them at their word? What, should black people try to always wear gloves and socks in times of high exposure? I think not. Somehow I couldn't see it selling in Africa, especially if it was coming from a white person, as I suspect, (just by reading that sentence) that this article is. That said, I find it very hard to imagine how they could sunburn their hands and bottoms of their feet, other than laying on their backs with their hands and feet in the air?! Lol. So, Black people of the United Kingdom, Cancer Research Uk's top advice to you is: Don't have sex in intense sunshine and if you do, be sure to wear gloves and socks at all times! The link is below if you want to see it for yourselves. http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/type/skin-cancer/about/skin-cancer-risks-and-causes Also, besides all the joking there seems to be a more serious point. The 7'th Google hit for the same question was a page on skin cancer from brownskin.net, which, as the name suggests is a site written by and for black people and is largely about skin. Alarmingly, this page states quite clearly that black people have a false sense of security regarding the risk of skin cancer and that whilst the amount of black people who contract skin cancer is lower overall, the mortality rate is in fact higher! I believe this is an American site, but it certainly sounds believable. Given C' R' UK's "advice" on the subject is so flimsy and I would say perhaps even a little insulting. Especially so, when that sketchy/insulting advice directly contradicts the advice of a 'black skin' website? Again, the link if you wish to see it yourselves. www.brownskin.net/cancer.htm I find it really quite alarming that this seems to be such a grey area, when today in 2010, a good % of our population is not white. My original question was going to be 'are black people less at risk...' but I think as I've gone on the question is perhaps more appropriate if along the lines of: Is there a massive oversight on the part of the leading cancer awareness organisations in the UK and possibly the rest of the world? And could, or even should, more be done to raise awareness amongst black people and advertise that whilst they may be at less risk of being damaged by the Sun's UV rays, they are at a high risk of mis-diagnosis or un-awareness that they are vulnerable? I'm not trying to stir an arguament, or say anything intended to offend anyone, I have genuine concerns about this (potential) issue. I am looking forward to hearing some interesting and informative answers. Please, if you don't have anything sensible to say, keep it to yourself. Thanks.Update: I still have no answer. My question was, in simple terms, 'should more be done to educate black people on skin cancer, seeing as the 'black skin' website I read seemed to think that black people have a "false sense of security" & higher mortality rate. I genuinely wondered this, and when I tried to research it I found vague & contradicting information. Since Cancer Research uk have such little to say on the matter, I put it (again) that could/should more be done to raise awareness amongst black people? -That whilst yes, they are at less risk of being damaged in the first place, but does that very fact mean that they are at a higher risk of fatality or mis-diagnosis? I never disputed that their skin is less likely to burn or contract skin cancer, but it seriously worries me that there is not more information. Perhaps "Black people are at less risk of having their skin damaged by the sun, but EVERYONE should address any suspicions with the same urgency and importance. Also, Im not racist, not in the slightest. I'd have thought that anyone with any degree of intelligence would see that my question is regarding the health & well-being of black people. Quite how one could derive racist sentiments from this, I cannot understand. There are some truly narrow-minded people in the world. It saddens me greatly, that today in 2010 one cannot open a topic regarding skin colour (no-matter how sensitively/carefully they word it!) without being 'branded' by two or three others as a racist! It makes me sick. I echo my sentiments from before: If you don't have anything sensible to say, spare us it. I would have thought that in such a diverse society, people could discuss each other's colour freely, perhaps I was mistaken. Do you really think id have spent half my evening writing a question, to have a discreet racial dig or spark an arguament? You are hugely mistaken, I thought I made my intentions clear from the off. I'm still looking for an answer though. K more

Voting Question: Is the brand Obama sold us overall good or bad for USA?

I read an article about Obama in the Guardian talking about Brands and this person Naomi Klein went on to say both Bush had run the position of president like a Hollow Corporation, whereas Obama somewhat changed this. A quote from the long piece. This preference for symbols over substance, and this unwillingness to stick to a morally clear if unpopular course, is where Obama decisively parts ways with the transformative political movements from which he has borrowed so much (the pop-art posters from Che, his cadence from King, his "Yes We Can!" slogan from the migrant farmworkers – si se puede). These movements made unequivocal demands of existing power structures: for land distribution, higher wages, ambitious social programmes. Because of those high-cost demands, these movements had not only committed followers but serious enemies. Obama, in sharp contrast not just to social movements but to transformative presidents such as FDR, follows the logic of marketing: create an appealing canvas on which all are invited to project their deepest desires but stay vague enough not to lose anyone but the committed wing nuts (which, granted, constitute a not inconsequential demographic in the United States). Advertising Age had it right when it gushed that the Obama brand is "big enough to be anything to anyone yet had an intimate enough feel to inspire advocacy". And then their highest compliment: "Mr Obama somehow managed to be both Coke and Honest Tea, both the megabrand with the global awareness and distribution network and the dark-horse, upstart niche player." http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jan/16/naomi-klein-branding-obama-america If ya got time should read it. Resolved Question: Just what's so wrong with "militant" atheism, anyway?

I seen stories and posts in the conservative media and on websites like this accusing atheist individuals or group that dare to publicly proclaim their atheism as being "militant"--with the unspoken (sometimes spoken) suggestion that such a position is bad, dangerous, unpatriotic or even downright evil. But why is this? Xtians have been putting up billboards and taking out media advertising for decades--why is it "militant" for an atheist group to do the same? Granted some of the billboards are a little blunt, but most of them appear to go to great lengths to avoid being confrontational. Xtians have been meeting to discuss topics of mutual interest and benefit (both religious and secular) for centuries--why are atheists who try to do the same labeled "militant". Especially since 9/11 the term has become irrevocably tied to terrorists and violent extremist groups. Xtians often (and rightfully) take advantage of the court system when they feel their constitutional rights have been violated--why are atheists "militant" or "aggressive" on the relatively few times they've done the same. Someone please tell me what's so militant about participating in public displays or events as an atheist that wide ranging groups have involved themselves in anyone giving it a second thought? Did the atheist sign in the Washington State Capitol REALLY ruin anyone's Xmas? Would a humanists groups sponsoring a section of highway REALLY damn all those who drive on it to the depths of Hell? Why shouldn't atheists groups have the same right to expand their membership and raise awareness of their existence without interference that most other religious, political or cultural groups have? Why aren't campus "young conservatives" groups called "militant"? Why wasn't the group that rented billboards urging people to say "Merry Xmas" instead of "Happy Holidays" referred to as "Militant Xtians" in the press?" Why doesn't the media call Little League a "militant youth sports group"? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this issue--most particularly our American cousins, who from what I seen in the media seem to wrestling the most with this. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Looking to help for bottle/glassing crime prevention campaign?

To put it in more detail, a couple of weeks ago. I was glassed by someone in a club. A completely random attack that I didn't provoke or anything of that matter. It has left me a 2 inch scar above my left eye. Long story short it's currently with the police and I hope to prosecute the offender. Anyway, being a Graphic Designer. I feel I need to help to raise awareness to prevent this sort of crime from happening. I have a couple of photo's of the intial wound and would like to use it in some sort of advertising campaign. My question is... Does anybody know who would be the right peope to contact about this? Wether it's to help me do this on my own? Or a firmly based company that already campaigns for this that I could contact? Many thanks Clark more

Resolved Question: Please review my essay on Super-Size Me?

This is my essay for Health. We watched the movie Super -Size Me and were asked to do this. The topics I included were all given and had to be used. and then of course, there had to be and intro and a conclusion. I dont want the essay checked for facts. I want it checked for grammar and that kind of stuff. so if you have the time to read this over i would greatly appreciate it. I've numbered the paragraphs so that you can refer to them more easily. thank you soo much 1 Super-Size Me is the perfect movie to watch to understand the benefits and harms of certain eating habits. It teaches us about the dangers of fast food. Not only that, but it also explains what foods to eat, how much of those foods, and ways to maintain a healthy weight. 2Super-Size Me is a great teaching tool for students and everyone else. For example, it shows us the risks of eating fast food, specifically McDonald’s fast food. Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald’s fast food for thirty days straight. He gained 25 pounds and also doubled his chances for heart disease. It took Morgan 14 months to lose his extra weight and he said it was nothing close to being easy. In addition, this movie shows the ways schools are affecting obesity in their students. Vending machines with pop are one of the main reasons. Some schools have banned soda vending machines and even prohibited students from bringing soda. Furthermore, Super-Size Me gives awareness about the consumption of fast food. Forty percent of American meals are eaten out of the house; that is about 121,623,890 people! Because of fast food restaurants, sixty percent of Americans, about 182,435,834 people, are either overweight or obese. 3 This documentary film shares many interesting facts. For instance, the people of America eat more than 1,000,000 animals hourly. Another fact is that there are only seven items on McDonald’s menu that contain absolutely no sugar. As well as McDonald’s being unhealthy, it represents 43 percent of America’s fast food market, which makes things even worse. Also, each day 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant. 4 I think that it makes complete sense that the main cause for people being overweight and obese is the fast food industry. The food is already so fattening. On top of that, it makes a person lazy because it depresses the body and harms many of its organs. If you look back many, many years ago, weight was not such a huge issue. That is because the fast food industry was not so popular. This not only prevented people from becoming so weighty, but since they were not getting so much fat they also were active. 5Now, the question is, whose responsibility is it for Americans’ weight problems. The credit for that should go to both, the fast food industry and the general public. Yes, industry encourages the public to buy their food; they advertise through television commercials, signs, and even toys. But then again, the public is stupid enough to fall for all these advertisements. Fast food is not the only thing being advertised. There are commercials for whole-grain cereals, and articles about how to keep up a healthy lifestyle, and even free samples of fruit at the grocery store. Even so, we still tend to fall for the junk. 6Back in the 1950s, the founder of McDonald’s said, “Look after the customer, and the business will take care of itself.” This means that if the customer is convinced to buy the food then the business will be fine because it will be making money. Basically, customers are being looked after and at the same time being harmed because the food they are told to eat is only hurting their bodies. But no matter what, the business is making good movie. 7Overall, Super-Size Me teaches that fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s are extremely unhealthy. The food should be eaten very sparingly if at all. Otherwise, nutritionists advise to never eat it. It affects you in many ways, like by increasing your weight, or even heightening your chances of heart disease.someone told me to take out the 'i think' that starts the fourth paragraph. the thing is, the teacher told us to give our own opinions/personal experience in the essay. if i took out the 'i think' wouldnt it sounds just like facts? not my opinion? more

Resolved Question: How to raise awareness or increase interest in something?

I'm trying to earn up money to donate to a certain wildlife charity for a particular species - the only thing is, the species isn't that well known and isn't incredibly popular. That is, it's not a panda, a wolf, a dolphin, or anything like that. It's a rhinoceros. How would I try to get the word out so I can raise money to help the species when at the moment, there's little to no interest in it? I would prefer to do so without telling them it's going to something else because I wouldn't feel right about that and the whole point of this is not only to try to help out the species per say but also get the word out. Any suggestions on how to advertise? The main method is through my own artwork - I got a main piece down as an example of what I can do and I'm taking commissions to earn the money. But, because the animal they're seeing isn't all that popular, no one seems to be showing up - and I consider my artwork to be fairly decent (that is, you can tell what the heck it is and it's for the most part anatomically correct). Voting Question: I have to write analysis of a fashion marketing campaign that has been successful. Here the one I wrote.?

Please read this analysis and tell me what you think. I also need a way to end it... Please help. Thanks so much!!! Analysis of Fashion Campaign: K&G Fashion Superstore: “Fashion without the victim” When determining the success of a fashion ad campaign, one has to determine the goal of that campaign. Was it to drive sales for a key item? Was it to stir controversy? Was it to just create a brand image/feeling? Was it to try to increase market awareness and brand exposure? A case in point is the K&G Fashion Superstore chain, owned by Men’s Warehouse Inc. K&G’s point of separation is that it advertises the same brands and styles of clothes as found in other department stores at everyday prices that are up to 60 percent less. To sharpen their distinction between other department stores in this bad economy , K&G Fashion Superstore launched a humorous new advertising campaign that pushed its selections and prices with a tagline — “Fashion without the victim” – The new campaign included television, radio, out-of-home and guerilla tactics to help drive home the point that K&G offers the same styles and brands of clothes as department stores, but at everyday prices that are up to 60% less. One television commercial, entitled “911,” remind you of an actual call to the emergency phone number, but the “victim” is merely a shopper who overpaid for clothing at a department store. The caller claims to have been just robbed by a man who “took my money and all I got was this dress.” A second television commercial takes place in a courtroom where a defendant is suing a department store salesman for selling him an overpriced suit. An insensitive judge tells the defendant that if he’s “stupid enough to pay that, you deserve what you get.” A number of radio spots throw down the gauntlet with the opening line of “Department stores are robbing people every day; so we thought we’d teach them a lesson and rob them back.” In each commercial, an electronically altered voice demands payment from a department store operator for something it feels is valuable or incriminating to the store. Through each plot, listeners are reminded that K&G offers the same designer brands as department stores, but at a much lower cost. The campaign for K&G seeks to make waves because its goal is to “drive awareness” for the K&G brand.please dont answer the question with dumb answers to get points.. please i really do need help... more

Resolved Question: Applying for position as Green roots canvasser. Does this look right to you?

Earlier today I blew an opportunity to make $2,000 in two weeks, after almost a month and a half of preparation. That was income and experience I badly needed. Now my self-esteem is at about a -3. My plan B was to pick up a position as Canvasser, as I do have a strong interest in the cause. However every thing I write sounds very tight assed... How is this? Hello. I am 23 years old and have worked in a wide range of occupations, beginning with a tour in the Air Force in Fuels/ Flight line Management, an English teacher in Japan for school children and company employers, and have free lanced in graphic design and computer repair. I am new to Washington and find Seattle the first city I could ever imagine not wanting to leave in favor of traveling! In addition to my desire to improve myself with new experiences and skills, I would also like to be apart of the team of individuals who take the burden upon themselves for instituting political changes, human rights, ecological preservation, and an increase of awareness from the public of their own parts in our freedoms. A hobby of mine has always been early American history, as I have held a strong respect for the founding fathers of this country, and their message that the rights we do not defend we will most certainly lose. I have previous experience working closely with others, be self motivated, a leader when the situation calls for it, and how to advertise. However there is still much room for improvement, and I would look forward to the unique challenges as Canvasser. more

Resolved Question: Should there be a government sponsored public awareness campaign teaching children the truth about religion?

Just a few simple truths that religious people deliberately (and dishonestly) fail to mention when they’re indoctrinating children into the various religions. Simple truths like there is no evidence of any higher powers, a random, uncontrolled universe where stuff just happens is a much more plausible explanation that an invisible creator god who made and controls the whole universe and gave humanity a stupid book of nonsense myths and will burn people in hell if they don’t believe them. Religion has been and still to this day is at the core of most of the world’s war, violence, prejudice, racism, sexism, exploitation etc. You know, stuff like this; simple truths that religious people never mention because if they do, they wouldn’t be able to as effectively trick children into believing the mythical nonsense that is at the core of every religion. What kind of effect would it have if the government sponsored a public awareness campaign involving TV and internet advertising, billboards, t-shirts and bumper stickers featuring anti-religion slogans? more

Resolved Question: Name any corporation organization or government as powerful as the media?

New science -- new ideas , how we percieve old ideas What they ignore --- we do not hear about -- What is important to them is heard repeatedly --- It is often unlikely that they can not reach every single person in the western world with one singe idea or fear -or set of "facts" They can change how you see any policy any President any nation any religion Media sways opinion and it creates awareness Policies passed that suit the media and the friends of the media will not likely receive much coverage if any ---even if it does infringe on you're rights It also defines the opposition -- the "other" side - Advertising dollars from major corperate spending run into the millions of dollars range When Coke buys time slots it is big money business Millions on something that sways opinion and creates awareness Manipulation of the media equals manipulation of the market -- manipulation of the consumer --- changes the market by allowing certain things and not others to become known --- the decision is never an informed one We are to take their word for it they did their homework and left any bias out of their appraisal of something we will never see and likely will never even read about in more detail .... they could literally tell you anything because they as a group can squash any counter arguments by villifying them constantly or ignoring them --- either way they control the message of the opposition They now might have created their own opposition . Networks owned by the same groups in some cases will set up a wrestling match of views No one gets any information but it is quite a show Most of the time the oppositions policy and the good guys policy is exactly the same -- but the networks have sold the real life politics partisanship so well no one sees through the lie any more ------------ Go through an average week of you're life --- how much editing would it take for a media outlet to make you appear anyway they wanted you to appear? The Arab lady you were shown dancing on the 9/11 attacks --- Was file They asked the lady if she would dance for the camera for some candy .....she had no idea the US had been attacked --- but they edited out to say what they wanted it to say "All you're enemies hate you and lets show you who you should hate now" Name any corporation organization or government as powerful as the media? more

Resolved Question: What Do You Think About Keira Knightley's Domestic Abuse PSA Being Pulled From TV?

Knightley's Anti-domestic Violence Advert Banned 26 April 2009 6:40 PM, PDT An anti-domestic violence advert starring Keira Knightley has been banned from British television after it was branded too violent by advertising censors. The Atonement star plays an actress returning home from a film set to be confronted by a violent boyfriend who accuses her of having an affair with a co-star, before attacking her and knocking her to the floor. The harrowing promo - made for U.K. charity Women's Aid - ends with Knightley being repeatedly kicked on the floor, and advertising approval body Clearcast has deemed the scene too violent for broadcast. The advert, called The Cut, launched in British cinemas this month and has been viewed more than a million times on YouTube, but will only air on television if scenes showing Knightley being thrown to the floor and beaten are removed. Chris Hirst, managing director of Grey London Advertising Agency which created The Cut, says, "The reason we are still in conversation with Clearcast about it is because it is too violent. Part of the campaign is to raise awareness about domestic violence, and spark debate, which the advert has done, even if it doesn't make it on television." The advert was created by Joe Wright, who directed of two of Knightley's hit films, Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt7JZSrDJA8 - the PSA more

Resolved Question: Do you like my speech? tips?

So i made it to the 2nd round of speechs and i was wondering if there were any advice anything to change?? How Media Affects Teenagers The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”-Malcom X The media has brainwashed today’s Canadians into believing what THEY want you to believe. Whether it be politics, what to buy, or what to wear - the media effects everything you do whether you are aware or not. Everything on television is brainwashing. Your favorite cartoon, and especially commercials. Buy this, buy that. Just because this cheese is in a prettier package than this one doesn't mean I'm going to buy it. Just because a more attractive person is eating it doesn't mean it’s better for you. Ever notice how if you see it on TV you automatically think it must be good? Girls are surrounded by images of female beauty that are unrealistic and unattainable. And yet two out of three girls who participated in their national media survey said they "Wanted to look like a character on TV." One out of three said they had "Changed something about their appearance to resemble that character." researchers at Flinders University in South Australia studied 400 teenagers regarding how they relate to advertising. They found that girls who watched TV commercials featuring underweight models lost self-confidence and became more dissatisfied with their own bodies. Girls who spent the most time and effort on their appearance suffered the greatest loss in confidence. Leading to unhealthy habits like anorexia or bulimia. Since 2000 BC violence has always played a role in entertainment from the Ancient Egyptians re-enacting the murder of their god Orsis to James Bond movies we watch in the present day. Does media violence affect the way children act? Physiologist Leonard Eron discovered that children who watch media violence tend become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, children may be more fearful of the world around them , children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others . Children who watched many hours of TV are likely to become more aggressive when they are teenagers and have a higher chance of being arrested for criminal acts when they are older. Young children do not know the difference from what they see on TV to what they dream to what is really happening for example if you asked a six year old watching a commercial about pop corn, if you asked if the television fell would the popcorn spill they almost always will say yes, meaning they think cartoon acts of violence are real, this starts to shape society for them. The average two to six year old watches two hours of television a day and the average 7-18 year old watches 4 hours of television each day this would mean at the age of thirteen the average child has spent over ten thousand hours watching television which is more than 425 days watching television. That is equivalent to a year and two months of watching television non-stop. The average Canadian sees forty thousand advertisements a year .Advertisements contain subliminal messages which are hidden messages affecting the way we act and what we buy. You respond without awareness to the stimulus. For example when you listen to a heavy beat music you may feel more energetic or when you listen to peaceful music you feel like sitting back and closing your eyes. Your brain is a sponge it will absorb any information you give it even if you don’t mean to. Resolved Question: Solutions for expanding awareness of Alternative systems.?

Most people agree that we need to do something to improve how we live and travel on this little planet to have less impact on the environment. But not everyone can go out and buy a new, latest technology, Zero Energy home...or put a Solar Panel system on their home, or buy a Hybrid Electric Car, or get their existing car Converted to all electric drive. Some people can afford it, but are not aware how to do it or who to speak to. Others want to help, but what can they do? I thought about an "ECO-NETWORK" that advocated alternatives, BUT without the scam-ripoff-phony features. No Minimum purchases, no minimum monthly points. No inverntory. Again, none of the "hooks" of pyramid scams or exploitive deceptions that some MLM's have used to rip off people. But many people replied that was still "taking advantage" of people. So, how do we effectively get the word out about viable alternatives, other than bombarding the media with paid advertising...which I am also personally tired of. I really thought that an Eco-Network where you got paid (commission) for sharing information when somebody bought something they wanted (but again no minimums, no fees, no "hooks") The idea here is a grass roots, word of mouth, bottom up sharing of accurate information about viable alternatives...as opposed to the old business model of exaggerating advertising and scams and financial traps. There is enough of that crap out there, I want to do something else that helps conscientious people, helps consumers and helps alternative businesses. Win-Win-Win. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Did you watch the Panorama special last night?

I am wondering if the BBC's becoming more and more obsessed with crimes of a sexual nature. Last nights Panorama was all about "sexual" bullying at schools. Now I know that you are going to say that this needs to be brought to the attention of the general public and in some way I completely agree but! This has been going on since schools were invented and up till now was seen as part of growing up (rightly or wrongly) and I am sure we have all either seen it or been victims. I do not have a problem with victims reporting these offences as and when they occur which,is the correct thing to do and offenders should be punished as with all offences. The BBC seem to concentrate too much on crimes such as these and other just as serious crimes go unreported. I think we are all aware now of the seriousness of sexual offences of all kinds and we all agree it is wrong as is bullying, and I think its about time the BBC informed us about other serious crimes in particular Domestic violence, knife crimes and crime in general. This subject was mentioned on the news but more to advertise Panorama later in the evening. I have spent a lot of time working with victims and indeed offenders and as far as the victims are concerned every time they see or hear things about these types of offences all their memories come flooding back.I find this unfair to the victims and although I agree there should be public awareness there are other important matters we should be informed about such as corrupt government officials and the like. Does the BBC see itself as some kind of beacon or what? Have they frogotten about the serious sex offenders that have either worked in high profile jobs in the past (certain top DJ's) and of course high profile "stars" such as Garry Glitter and Johnathon King to name just two, these were regularly seen on top of the pops and other BBC shows.J.K was even employed by the BBC. Like I have said I fully support bringing things to our attention but not in an obsessive way after all, there are thing happening out there which could do with being brought to our attention. For the record! I fully agree with all sex offenders being brought to book and support for victims but,I also fully support offenders of all crimes being brough to justice as well. more
