Open Question: Is the TV show Mad Men based on a movie?
I tried searching online but couldn't find an answer. For some reason I'm thinking there is a movie from the 70s or 80s on which the TV show is based, or which is about a similar advertising agency. Am I mistaken? moreOpen Question: Is an MBA the right graduate degree for me?
In 2006, I graduated with my Bachelor's of Art in Public Relations. Since 2007, I have been working for a small advertising agency handling Public Relations, Specialty Promotions, Account Executive - you name it I handle it. I love my job, but a Master's degree is something I've always wanted. Currently, I'm looking at obtaining my MBA through a school which offers both online and Saturday classes. With everything going on in the economy, I can't afford to quit my job to enter Graduate School, so this online program works out great. Ultimately, I'd like to teach - and not necessarily a course which most typical MBA students teach, i.e. economics, etc. I know that some MBAs teach marketing courses, which I can teach because I handle marketing in my current job. I'd really like to teach at maybe a community college level and teach courses such as Speech and maybe English. Is the MBA the right choice for me? moreOpen Question: what about this ad in "village voice" nyc paper. travel line. at 5 penn plaza? any good?

We operate a recruiting agency that recruit staff from overseas for American companies. We have in our hand a petition for over 100 workers to work in a hotel this summer. I must say the pay is not great. How is it that the employer advertised for over a month in the major newspapers and did not receive even 10 applications? Without any financial restrictions, it would appear that a corporation (or any other well funded agency) could now conceivably buy up all or most of the air space available to advertise their political candidate. Just a few such examples of monumental funding would seem to send a rather ominous message to other candidates not in line with corporate interests. This seems like a convoluted waste of money. Perhaps we should just knock out the middle man, and have corporation do the voting during an election.Kyle- I do not hate corporations. They are essential, but they are not guided by a desire to do the "right thing". There goal (as it is should be) is simply to make a profit. I would have the same objection to a billionaire who would have to power to drown out everybody elses "free speech".Splitter- I disagree, I don't believe corporations are made up of people. Corporations are their own entity with just one purpose. Corporations control people much more than people control corporations.Time to Shrug- I sincerly hope you are right, but it seems harder and harder to distinguish between the signal and the noise we hear everyday.Titou- I read your question. We obviously have the same concern! All responses ar appreciated. Special thanks to Solar & NeilAll responses ar appreciated. Do employment agencies actually have job available or do they waste your time having you come in there to meet some sort of quota? I have applied to at least 10 employment agencies that all have jobs advertised, but nothing ever happens. This has happened to a few people I know. moreResolved Question: ****IS THIS A GOOD SUMMARY**** ITS DUE IN A BIT PLEASE HELP!!!?
Many brand name multinationals, as we have seen, are in the process of transcending the need to identify with their earthbound products. They dream instead about their brands' deep inner meanings --the way they capture the spirit of individuality, athleticism, wilderness or community. In this context of strut over stuff, marketing departments charged with the managing of brand identities have begun to see their work as something that occurs not in conjunction with factory production but in direct competition with it. "Products are made in the factory", says Walter Landor, president of Landor branding agency, "brands are made in the mind", Peter Carroll, president of advertising giant J. Walter Thompson, reiterates the same thought: The difference between products and brands is fundamental. A product is some that is made in a factory; a brand is something that bought the customer." Savvy ad agencies have all moved away from the idea that they are flogging a product made by someone else, and have come to think of themselves instead of brand factories, hammering out what is the true value: the idea, the lifestyle, the attitude. Brand builders are the new primary product in our so-called knowledge economy. Around the globe today many brand names are in the process of going beyond the limits to identify with their earthbound products. Individualism, something part of nature and the athletic side is something that brand name multinationals want to show. The advertising and marketing sectors have become too arrogant and too big for something they can handle. Brand name multinationals want their brand deeper meaning to come out because they have lost sight of the fact that without a product in the first place, they are redundant. Many ad agencies have now come to the approach of leaving the product alone because it was created by someone else. If brand is the most important thing, let them introduce a brand without a product attached, and see what success they have. moreResolved Question: Advertising Question: Females in Advertising?

i'm 24, no dependents, and freelancing (full-time) at a very decent advertising agency. any suggestion on plans? I know I am. I just got out of the Army with an Honorable discharge and deployments to Iraq. I was excited looking through all the sites offering aid to Veteran's finding a job - at least until I realized that no one really cares about Veteran's. For example, most of the government agencies use USAJobs as the posting site for employment. USAJobs in and of itself claims to assist Veteran's. But a quick search only leads to about 95% of all jobs posted are in the GS 12-15 range. For these jobs, it is a requirement the applicant have 10 years experience and a Master's or Doctorate degree. Now that doesn't seem to me like helping Veteran's. It seems that they are helping people with Doctorate and Master's degrees. If anything, these people need less help than the normal Soldier. Now with my military experience, I also have a Bachelor's degree, and jobs before the military with relevant marketing, manager, etc experience. I live in Houston, the fourth largest city in America. When using my resume with my military added, I have yet to receive a single call-back. Using the same resume, but omitting my military experience, I get responses. People would rather respond to me with several years gap in my resume than they would looking at one with military experience. To me, no one really cares about Veteran's. Sometimes I wish I never joined in the first place. The worst part isn't not being able to find a job but seeing places like USAJobs claim to help so many people when they really should advertise that they are only catering to the already well-catered to. It may be hard to find a job with a Master's or Doctorate degree, I will give you that, but the largest portion of the military who are leaving don't have these degrees. They're too busy taking numerous tours of duty to Afghanistan or Iraq to get any education. What a scam. moreResolved Question: What should MY cover letter LOOK LIKE?
I am rebuilding my cover letter now that I have a year's experience in the writing field. I will be applying to a few local magazines and perhaps a few advertising agencies for a junior copywriting position. I know to include samples of my work. I saw an advert for American airlines the other nite on telly. Their slogan was, at the end, 'we know why you fly.' Well, mate, I dont know bout you, but the reason i fly is cos that's about the only way to get from A to B across the ocean, unless you like a long boat ride. I mean, what are they suggesting? that people fly so they can s*ag in the public toilets, or flirt with some cabin crew who never look as hot at they do in the adverts, or cos they love being sardined in between people for hours? f*cks sake, and these people work for major ad agencies. Most advertising agents I've found require publisher content to receive a steady flow of traffic which is out of my current demand. My content meets a dedicated niche so I doubt it will ever be on the same level as say Facebook or Google. Ok, so I have been looking for a job for just over a year now. But am starting to wonder if my job hunting strategies are just wrong! I look on Internet websites such as the Job Centre Plus, council websites and charity websites, as well as FE job website. I also use agencies for work, but find that they never hardly have any suitable work for me. I have some experience of working in a retail environment and in a contact centre environment. I am not looking to work in a contact centre again as the last one I worked out did not really work out. I am starting some volunteering shortly with a charity called Carers Support, I will be volunteering a couple of hours a fortnight befriending a carer. Alot of things have set me back with not doing volunteering before now. When I try to call places to see if they have jobs they tell me to look on the job centre website or in a newspaper, so alot of the time it does not seem to get me very far ringing places. I feel I am going around and around in circles looking on the same websites and doing the same things, and getting a few interviews but not getting the job at the end of it. I have been applying for some office jobs, which again isn't particularly what I want to do. I have also applied for a couple of internships but so far have not been successful. Does anyone know of any useful websites that advertise charity internships in kent? I just feel like I'm drifting and could do with some suggestions! p.s I graduated in 2007 in Gender Studies and Sociology, but still do not have much of a clue as to what direction I want to go in. Its really starting to worry me. moreResolved Question: Moving to America to work for a year...?
If I'm in England and want to get a job in California, say, just for a year, what's the best way to go about it? Apply for a job hoping they'll give me a VISA? Apply for a job and sort my own VISA out? If so what VISA? Go over there on a whim, get a part time job based on a free 3 month VISA and hoping to get a proper job - then upgrade VISA somehow? I'm not entirely sure how the process works or what is the best route to take. Any advice/help would be much appreciated! Thanks FYI: I would be applying to international advertising agencies eg JWT/DDB moreResolved Question: Temp agency for secretarial work-- am I overqualified plus other questions?
I own my own boutique but it's closed down in the winter due to our customers being summer-only residents. I need work for the winter and am interested in applying at a temp agency. They advertised secretarial jobs for $13 per hour, which is a good wage, and at 40 hours per week. I have lots of experience managing people, using computer programs, typing, etc... I do have a college degree and think I may be overqualified for simple secretarial work because of my experience, and I don't want to be rejected for the job because of this. Also, I'm afraid that they will think I won't need a job since I drive a luxury car, etc... I know that sounds stupid and shallow, but I'm concerned about being passed over for someone that outward appearances is deemed to have more need than I. Are these things that may restrict the types of jobs I can get with this temp agency? I've never applied at a temp agency before, but since the economy is bad and my store wasn't profitable this year, I need to make money. Thanks for any advice. Please, no rude answers. more
