Open Question: Mexican Occupation of America?

Do you believe that the Mexican Occupation of American is a threat to American society? Everything is coming out with duel languages from milk to toilet paper, to store advertisements to restaurant menus, to DVDs and crayon boxes. I can understand people who can not read English need some extra help, but to replace or add to what we see in daily life all over the country is crazy. The money used on merchandise for extra printing, and extra printing of Spanish makes the English words smaller to read. Is this money and ink worth using? You got more illegals here and Obama is allowing this, to replace the legal people who deserve more priority. You see the evidence all around if you live here. Not only in what we read when buying things, but with all the American citizens out of jobs because of illegals taking them. We all know it. We all know people affected by loosing a job and not finding one. We all are tired trying to read something important but having to skim to find the right line in all of the Spanish words present on the labels/manuals. Nothing against Mexicans or people who speak Spanish. No. Nothing wrong with people coming to this country to gain a better education. Nothing wrong with that. The problems the people coming here just to use up our resources and society. I know of some areas with almost a dozen illegals live in the same house and they all do jobs that teenagers or out of work adults should be doing. They (not all, but easiest pronoun for me at the moment) can not speak or read English (I saw a guy go into one of those driving schools with an interpreter to read road signs!!), get jobs that out of work citizens need (outsourcing is just as much fault as illegals), and taxes are used to support them. Would you even consider this a prejudice issue or an issue of American heritage and standards? Heck, this country was founded under Christian principles and you got people building monuments of false gods, slapping the families of 9/11 in the face with it. Now, I need your thoughts and opinions about this please. Curious how some Yahoos will consider this country’s status. Thank you for your input. more

Voting Question: What are some controversies in advertising/marketing?

I'm doing my senior project on advertising. I plan to ask a local store (whose owners I know) if I can do an ad campaign for them (commercial, print ads, posters). But before we do the actual "product" we need to write a research paper. So I need a research topic, that includes my point of view and an opposing point of view. There are many controversies in advertisement this day in age, but what is one that is relevant to my project idea? more

Voting Question: Has your dog ever been used in an advertisement?

And if so, how did that happen? Did you actively try to get your dog in print ads or were you surprised to be asked?Ours have been in London Fog print ads and the Fetchdog catalog. We were asked to participate in a PBS dog piece, but we didn't have pups at the right time. :(It's been just dumb luck in our case--photographer sees the dogs and then uses them, although the PBS folks I think went to the National Breed Club and asked for our breed fairly locally to where they were based. more

Resolved Question: DPA by an advertisement company, how do I complain?

Hi, I was working in an estate agency . One day , a sales person from my local borough came to my office in order to promote an advertisment opportunity in the local borough street map. I was interested but I told the gentleman that I would advertise for the new company I was about to open myself in two months. He agreed with the conditions and took my personal details for the meantine and he was supposed to give me a call back and take the relevant informations that i wanted to print on the street map. Two months later,I reveive the printed street maps along wiht an invoice, al when I look up for the ad, it was all my personal details were printed. It included my home address,my cell phone number,my personal email address, and my home phone number along with the old agency company name and their fax number. I was furious to see this! First of all the ad made no sense since all the informations were mixed up and secondly, my personal data were printed like this and now are in reach of the whole community of my local borough. I was shocked to know the council itself could make such a huge mistake. I have been receiving so many calls on my phone (both cell and home) ,my email id is full of spams. Now that they are asking for the invoice payment,I wrote them a letter to complain about the situation and recently they wrote back to me saying they refuse my complain and still expect the payment. The reason they give me was that I was suppoised to call them in roder to tell them the infromation I wanted to be printed on the ad,they said they called at home and no one anser and plus they said they send many fax at my old agency! Why would they send fax there when i specifically had told them I will not be there anymore. They finish the letter by stating that since they had no reply from me,they printed my personal data!! I still cannot beleive they did that just for the sake of an ad and some hundred pounds.I mean the council prefered to print my personal details rather than cancelleing the ad. I called them when i recieved their letter and still stand by saying they did nothing wrong. I dont understand why they dont realize the gravity of their mistake . I work with my clients personal data,I know how careful i have to be with their details ,any mistake and I can be sued for data protection leakage. Please help to reply back to them with strong words so this issue is for once and for all finished. I will not pay for this ad .Period. I want them to realize their mistake ,and compasate me for the damages it did to my personal life ( compensation is just to scare them off,I dont want it lol) And now then sent me a court notice saying that if I still dont pay within 3 days they will take me to court. I should be taking them to court! (but cant affort it..) Many Thanks. more

Voting Question: can anyone help w/ fixing my grammar? im a international student...?

Please help... im a international student. Hewlett-Packard Company is known as world’s largest maker of personal computers and also one of the world's largest information technology companies operates in nearly every country. William R. Hewlett and David Packard found this company in 1939. HP’s Major product lines include personal computing devices, enterprise servers, related storage devices, as well as a diverse range of printers and other imaging products. They are targeting in variety of fields; households, small to medium sized businesses and as well as online distribution, consumer-electronics and office-supply retailers, software partners and major technology vendors. As a world’s largest information technology company, there are still few problems that company is facing. Few of the problems that HP is facing are drop in sales, decline in imaging and printing group avenue, and decline in software revenue. One of the major problem that HP is facing is that drop in sales. HP saw its sales dropped 19 percent to $8.19 billion: PCs, Printers, Servers, and Software. There are some possible reasons why the sale has declined due to possible economic crisis, quality of products, trend of new technologies, and other competitors in the market. By looking at an evidence of constant drops of HP’s sales, there are some possibilities that HP’s sales wouldn’t improve in anytime soon. At this point, serious action must be taken to solve this problem. There are many ways to solve the issues starting from switching the locations/territories, and plan a better advertisement/marketing strategy. But my recommendation to this solution is to improve products and sales by managing the relationship between development and sales team, and catch up with the new trend of the technologies and hit the market with the new product that has same benefit, much more convenient, and more affective compared to PC products. To support my thought of recommendation, besides looking at the formal graph of statistics, we can easily find the mobile phone that has same function as computer. According to Forrester Researcher Report, they have researched and has clearly announced with their back up evidence that PC sales will continue to decline, much as they have for the past several years. Just by planning or making a first step into this industry will have a huge impact of HP’s future. more

Resolved Question: Can you please read my suspense story?

I wrote this story for my english class, I didn't spend much time on it due to a lack of time. I just want to know what you think. Please tell me what I could add, or rewrite. Suspense Story: The Bus A thick sheet of fog laced the empty streets with it's moisture and covered the exterior of the buildings. I could barely see through it, and my attempts at following the path leading home was useless. I hurried to the nearest bus stop hoping that I could catch the last midnight stop. I waited impatiently for what seemed to be hours. I gave into my exhaustion and curled up onto a crumbling park bench under a street light. A loud screech alerted me; the bus had finally arrived. "Hm. I didn't even hear it coming." The fog cleared away from the bus, I stepped towards the entrance and a sudden, deviating breeze seemed to pull me away. As I climbed aboard, I noticed the driver look at me with a strange expression on his face. I couldn't help but stare back at him. His features were intimidating, he had a noticeable scar beginning from the middle of his bald head and ending over his left brow bone, his face was stricken with age, and his eyes were dark. The bus doors slammed, and I immediately looked away. "A dollar seventy-five?" I asked, But he didn't answer. I rummaged through my bag and paid that amount anyways. I eased towards the back of the bus; It was completely empty, but as the distance between the driver and I grew, the less uncomfortable I felt. I fidgeted in my seat until I was satisfied. The ridiculously bright fluorescent lights in the bus was hurting my eyes. I couldn't help but notice how clean the bus was, the spotless silver floors; not even a single bit of dirt occupied a groove in the floor, the blue seats were shiny, no finger prints on the sliding windows, and the empty spots where the advertisements should have been. It was strange, as we drove off, the street lights began flickering erratically. I looked through the window behind me, and I realized that they only stopped flickering when we passed them. I figured it was just a minor electrical problem. I decided to take a short nap, and as I was about to fall asleep, the driver made a sudden sharp turn causing me to lose my balance and fall over. "How rude, doesn't he realize I'm back here? What a jerk. Excuse me, can you please take it easy?" I told him, as I quickly gathered my composure. A little disgruntled, I tried to give him an angry look through the rear-view mirror. When he looked up at me, his eyes were bleeding! I looked down and rubbed my eyes a little, but when I looked back at him, they were completely normal. It was a bit difficult for me to go back to sleep after that, but I managed to close my eyes and drift away. Ten minutes later, I woke up to a man sitting three seats before me. His presence startled me, I was certain the bus was empty when I came, so I stood up and slowly walked over to him. He was wearing a dark cloak with a hood that covered his head. "E-ex-excuse me, sir? H-h-how did you get on the bus? I was th-the last stop and I--"His head fell forward, and It scared it me. "Sir, are you okay?" I reached out and touched his shoulder, and I felt his ice cold skin through the cloth. I lifted his head up, his face was covered in blood, and his eyes along with his nose were missing. "Oh my god! He's dead! Stop the bus, please!" I pulled on the string to halt the bus, but it seemed as if the driver was ignoring me. I ran towards him, and I couldn't believe it. In place of his scar was a raw, open, bloody wound. He was dead; no one was driving the bus. Suddenly, the bus lights started flickering. I backed into one of the seats and fell over onto the cushion. I began screaming, but my own screams began to echo and fill my ears. The lights stopped flickering, and I was in complete darkness. When they turned back on, everything was covered in blood, the windows, the floor, and the ceiling was dripping in blood. I was shaking so hard I couldn't breathe, and my heart was racing, it felt as if it was going to burst within my chest. The lights turned off, and when it turned back on I always saw something horrible. I saw bodies hanging from the ceiling with blood dripping from their feet, I saw the windows of the bus shattered and bloody hands were reaching for me, then I saw people sitting in their seats screaming, just screaming... "Why? Why is this happening to me? What did I do? Please, I'm sorry!" I felt a shock go through my body, then again, and again, until I went unconscious...When I woke up, I was breathing heavily, then I lost consciousness again. When I woke up again, a doctor stood over me with a defibrillator in his hands. "Where am I?" "You're in a hospital." "Wh-what happened?" "You were in an accident. A terrible on more

Voting Question: Are not White House pictures in the public domain?

On official pictures taken and placed online by the White House appears this notice: "This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House." for instance here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/4609011110/in/photostream/ I thought that pictures taken by government employees in the course of their duties were automatically in the public domain, and thus the proscription against "altering" or using for commercial interests is not applicable. I understand the notion about making it look like Obama endorses whatever purposes being used, but that seems a separate issue from the ability to use a by-definition public domain photo in whatever way a user wanted. Seemed a little strange to me. Thoughts? Am I looking at this wrong? more

Resolved Question: Next Seventeen magazine release date?

The last issue came out like June 26th-ish and I thought for sure that the next one would come out almost exactly a month later, but now it is August 2 and there is no sign of a new Seventeen magazine!! Resolved Question: Have you ever busted out laughing at a truly inappropriate time?

My husbands mother died, she was 91 and though everyone was deeply saddened, no one was surprised. She had been ill for sometime and had lived a long and fruitful life. So, we all went to say our goodbyes at her wake. Once we did the initial viewing some of us went into the lounge room to take a break. I was standing in the room admiring the lovely couches, grandfather clock and the beautiful artwork on the wall when my eyes were met with the strangest sight. On the wall next to a curio cabinet filled with pretty things was a sign that said "Gift Certificates Available" Well, I could hardly contain my laughter but I tried to so it became one of those weezy laughs and tears were rolling down my face. My husbands sister came over and said "Are you ok?" I pointed to the sign and she started busting out laughing too. Now I began hysterically laughing, I could no longer hold my back my laughter and I am a real cackler. Now the whole family one by one came over and each saw the sign and pretty soon the room was full of people just "dying" and doubled over with hysteria. Tissues came out not for tears of sorrow but for tears from comedic relief. The funeral director came over and looked puzzled. "What is so funny?" I pointed to the sign and I said "What kind of funeral home gives gift certificates" "I mean, do you sell them to old customers to get new customers?" He said "No, that's for the gift shop downstairs" I said "Well that's just as creepy. Who would give someone a gift certificate to someone for a gift shop in a funeral home?" "I never thought of it that way" he replied. I of course went down to the gift shop and bought myself a little angel figurine. When I was paying they gave me a free gift. It was one of those clips for like a potato chip bag to keep them fresh once opened and it had a magnet on the back so you can put it on your refrigerator when not in use. On the clip was printed Branch Funeral Home Funerals and Cremations 190 E. Main St Smithtown, NY 631-724-9500 Now that's what I call shrewd advertisement!! Every time I use this clip I will think of that day and who knows, I might give my sister in law a creepy gift certificate for her birthday for that cute gift shop. Anyone have stories of laughing at unusual moments or even just funny stories?Wow, you guys have some great stories. You guys added much fun to my day Curious 1- I loved the Mary Tyler Moore show! Resolved Question: CO2 // Ocean acidification // phytoplankton // oxygen...?

... as i understand the new "ocean acidification" research project ( http://Youtube.com/watch?v=phyqIbBsUP4 )... if the new findings related to "ocean acidification" are accurate... and Ocean acidification is increasing exponentially... then by the end of this century we could loose vast amounts of phytoplankton that produce over half of the oxygen on Earth... while at the same time... we are chopping down Earth's vast forests to print advertisements on paper bleached white and then colored with toxic inks that will be dumped into land fills... Not to mention dumping mega tons of industrial chemical waste into the Oceans that is so toxic it is killing newborn whales and damaging the CNS of children even before they are born... http://EcoDelMar.org/pcb ... does anyone see this as a looming tsunami of -> CO2 -> Ocean acidification -> loss of phytoplankton -> loss of oxygen :: http://EcoDelMar.org/NautilusAbstract. Ocean acidification, a consequence of rising anthropogenic CO2 emissions, is poised to change marine ecosystems profoundly by increasing dissolved CO2 and decreasing ocean pH, carbonate ion concentration, and calcium carbonate mineral saturation state worldwide. These conditions hinder growth of calcium carbonate shells and skeletons by many marine plants and animals. The first direct impact on humans may be through declining harvests and fishery revenues from shellfish, their predators, and coral reef habitats. In a case study of US commercial fishery revenues, we begin to constrain the economic effects of ocean acidification over the next 50 years using atmospheric CO2 trajectories and laboratory studies of its effects, focusing especially on mollusks. In 2007, the $3.8 billion US annual domestic ex-vessel commercial harvest ultimately contributed $34 billion to the US gross national product. Mollusks contributed 19%, or $748 million, of the ex-vessel revenues that year.Ocean acidification and declining carbonate concentration could directly damage organisms, specifically corals and mollusks, by decreasing calcification rates. Reduced calcification is observed in response to rising CO2 and declining carbonate concentration even in waters that are thermodynamically supersaturated for calcium carbonate (Ω decreasing but still above 1). Many organisms, some commercially valuable, also exhibit a range of negative consequences for metabolism, reproduction, development, intracellular chemistry, and immunity... http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/4/2/024007/fulltext http://i2i.stanford.edu/AcidOcean/AcidOcean.htmAtmospheric CO2 is increasing _EXPONENTIALLY_ because of the unregulated combustion of fossil fuels (1). Approximately one-third of all of the CO2 released into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution has been absorbed by the oceans (2). This ongoing uptake of atmospheric CO2 is causing a drop in seawater pH at the global scale, causing an acidification of the oceans (3–5). Ocean acidification results in a decrease in seawater [CO3 2] and, consequently, a decrease in the saturation state () of carbonate minerals where Ksp is the apparent solubility product of a carbonate mineral (e.g., aragonite, calcite)}. Acidification is expected to reduce coral reef calcification and increase reef dissolution, and the relative rates of change will likely be related to the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in surface seawater, which is directly proportional to pCO2 in the atmosphere. REF: US GOV http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2492517/pdf/zpq10450.pdf..:: "Ocean acidification is essentially irreversible during our lifetimes. It will take tens of thousands of years for ocean chemistry to return to a condition similar to that occurring at pre-industrial times (about 200 years ago). Our ability to reduce ocean acidification through artificial methods such as the addition of chemicals is unproven. These techniques will at best be effective only at a very local scale, and could also cause damage to the marine environment.... Reducing CO2 emissions to the atmosphere is the only practical way to minimize the risk of large-scale and long term changes to the oceans... http://www.global-greenhouse-warming.com/ocean-acidification.html..:: Atmospheric CO2 is increasing _EXPONENTIALLY_ because of the unregulated combustion of fossil fuels (1). Resolved Question: Cross out the incorrect word and place the correct word next to it.?

Advertising is old: Some advertisements on paper go back farther than two thousand years. In ancient Greece, it was quiet common to see signs advertising different kinds of services, but it was not until printing was invented that modern advertising was born. In Europe, in the seventeenth century, they use to place ads in newspapers; some of these ads were personnel messages, but most were for business. When many emigrants come to the United States, they used advertisements to get jobs; we can only imagine them going thorough each newspaper very carefully. more

Resolved Question: Just done gcse media exam. think this approach was good? read?

We had to design a video game. Now I didn't want to go for anything stereotypical like war, adventure, swords, sport etc. as they're not original and generic. So instead I went for a fashion designer game where the target audience was a fashion designer working their way to fashion fame. I said that this would be a USP as there aren't many games in this genre compared to war and sport. I said that the target audience was set clearly and when we had to make a print advertisement, I involved people from different races such as blacks, whites, gingers, afros etc. to convey that the game was for everyone to let yourself go and be who you want to be. I used more media language but I can't be assed to explain more but this was the main approach. Do you think this paid off? more

Resolved Question: Laser printer question?

My wife frequently prints online coupons (have to save wherever we you can these days!). They're frequently a coupon at the top of the page, and then an advertisement covering some or all of the rest of the 8 1/2 x 11 page. Trying to be frugal (saving toner) and green (saving paper), she's been cutting smaller pieces of paper and printing the coupons on those. My question is - is that a good idea? Is she leaving "extra" toner inside the printer that would otherwise have been on the paper? We want to be as efficient as we can, but not at the price of causing problems with the printer. Any thoughts? Thanks!I'm sorry - but the first answer in no way answers my question. The laser doesn't "shoot" toner. I'm no engineer, but I understand the general concept of a laser printer (an electrically charged image of the page is created on a drum, toner clings to the image and is transferred to the page, and the toner is then fused by the laser). My question, I guess, is this: what happens to the toner that would normally have been transferred to the lower part of the paper, that in our case isn't there? Is it collected by the printer in some way, or is it being "spilled" inside the printer? more

Resolved Question: Is it weird for a teen girl to have this hanging in her room (picture)?

I was at my friends house today and she had this old advertisement for stockings printed out and hung up in her room. She asked me if it was weird since she's a girl (15) and the picture's of a girl but I didn't know what to say. She loves books so that's the only reason she has it up. If you look at just from the book point of view I don't think it's that weird but if you read more into it does it make her seem lesbian or anything? (She asked me that and I said I didn't know) What do you guys think? Here's the picture: http://www.twolia.com/blogs/heres-looking-like-you-kid/files/2009/05/vintage-hanes-womens-stockings-ad.jpgShe has some guys coming over to her house soon and was wondering if they would think she was weird because of the picture. I didn't think they would but I didn't want to give her the wrong advice. more

Resolved Question: What type of dog is this?

I'm writing an essay on a print advertisement but I can't determine what type of dog this is. It's a Pedigree ad for their adoption drive, and the very same picture is featured on their website. It's the smaller dog in a dark room with bars in the background. I was thinking some kind of terrier but I'm not sure. http://pedigree.com/03Adoption/click help dogs and its on the right side more

Resolved Question: Can I sue the breeder?

I bought a dog a little over a month ago which was advertised as AKC registered. I have printed out ads from the online advertisement which shows full AKC registered, the phone number, and pictures of the dog I purchased. There was no contract but I also have emails and text messages where she told me she was sending the papers. I also have copies of the parents AKC papers. I have not received the papers and I'm just trying to get opinions on what can be done. Please don't give advise if you can't say anything constructive. I know what the policy of the AKC is and I don't want to be criticized for it. I think it is just a shame that you really cannot trust people at all anymore.Well honestly, I'm not sure what I'm willing to do or not do. If I don't get papers it's not a horrible loss. Besides, I have means to take action against her in many ways. Therefore, I'm not really the one whose reputation is at stake here. more

Resolved Question: Anyone interested in a Family Photo Day?

Hi all, I'm an amature photographer and I'm looking into doing a family event in my home town, Harlow in the UK. If anyone would be interested in anything like this then please reply. The idea would be to select a location (maybe once a month) and take my camera and hopefully gather a crowd of people via online advertisement and just take photos, the public can then decide to have their photos emailed to them to use as they wish but must be aware that I will also use these snaps for my own portfolio and advertisement if I wish. All the correct forms will need to be filled out prior to taking any photos. As I am only an amature there will be no lighting stations or benches so I will be relying purely on my selected scenery. Also, I will be able to quote for printing on various products including my own side business of personalised gift bags. If this is of interest to anyone please add me and I will email more details if I get a good enough response and there may be a dedicated Facebook page, if it all kicks off I would love to go to different areas around the UK and do this. My main worry is, would need coucil permission to set this event up and how would I go about getting permission? Thanks, JamesThanks for the spell check, also. I did think about refreshments and entertainment which is why the location will be carefully selected. I also thought of aiming it at people looking at getting into modelling. Although I am an 'amateur' and don't have all the equipment I can still take amazing pictures. Thanks for your replies, I'll think about it a bit more and maybe save some money for new gear. more

Resolved Question: are you good at writing?? plz help with this short essay!!!?

Hello, thank you for allowing me to analyze one of your ads. What exactly is advertising? According to http://www.rubak.com, advertisement is “the attempt to send information to people to convince them to spend their money with a certain company I came across one of your ads regarding a new sandwich you invented: the BK Super Seven Incher. The ad has a young woman with her mouth wide open, looking surprised and nervous. There is a sandwich across from her mouth suggesting that the sandwich is too big to fit in her mouth. Written in bold letters “It’ll blow your mind away“. The target audience seems to be men. As a young woman and Burger King Consumer, I find the ad offensive and insulting. In your mission statement you state “We will conduct all our business affairs ethically, and with the best employees in the mid-south”. You seem to doing the exact opposite in this ad. In your ad, you appear to make the Super Seven Incher so big and juicy that women would not be able to handle it, especially with our small mouths. The ad seems to make everything seem larger. The words are printed in big bold letters, the sandwich is made to appear rather large, and the woman seems to be blown away by the size of the sandwich. On the bottom right hand corner, it is written “fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-broiled with the NEW BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER. Yearn for more after you taste the mind blowing burger……” Since when has something as innocent as eating a burger become so sexual? I understand that you are simply trying to get your new sandwich out there, and spending a good amount of money to advertise it. Advertisers currently spend about $360 million a year on product placements in films and TV programming, according to the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF). sexual innuendos of this sort is inappropriate - especially when it comes to advertising fast food (which most likely will be viewed by innocent, impressionable children).Burger King is a popular fast food restaurant and everyone eats there, women, men, teens, and especially young children. When innocent kids see your ad, what are they suppose to think? It’s just not ethical to portray a sandwich as humor or sexual. In today’s society, women are especially used for advertisement. As jean kilbourne states in her movie “Killing Us Softly” (1999), women’s bodies are used as tools. From clothing, to perfumes, to sports, even foods, as in this ad. Women’s bodies are used to sell. Women are portrayed as having a hot body, but no brain. Just put a half naked girl next to anything and it’s sold. Why didn’t you use a surprised-looking man trying to fit the big sandwich in his mouth? Why only portray a woman with this type of facial expression in this particular situation? In all, if you want to have better results in sales, try not to offend women or any gender or race. If you make an ad that appeal to all genders, you will have better sales. Using women in an offensive manor is an ugly trend that needs to stop. Burger King is a well known restaurant, and well respected, in order to keep it this way, you shouldn’t use such offensive ads, similar to the Super Seven Incher. more
